श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकादश्यां निराहार: समभ्यर्च्य जनार्दनम् ।
स्नातुं नन्दस्तु कालिन्द्या द्वादश्यां जलमाविशत् ॥१॥
एकादश्याम् निराहार:
on Ekaadashi day, having fasted,
समभ्यर्च्य जनार्दनम्
well worshipped Lord Vishnu,
स्नातुम् नन्द:-तु कालिन्द्या
to bathe, Nanda, indeed in Kaalindee,
द्वादश्याम् जलम्-आविशत्
on Dvaadashi, the waters entered
Nanda, indeed, on the day of Ekaadashi, having fasted and worshipped Lord Vishnu well, on Dvaadashi day, entered the waters of the Kaalindee river, to bathe.
तं गृहीत्वानयद् भृत्यो वरुणस्यासुरोऽन्तिकम् ।
अविज्ञायासुरीं बेलां प्रविष्टमुदकं निशि ॥२॥
तम्-गृहीत्वा-अनयत् भृत्य:
him getting hold of, took (him), a servant
वरुणस्य-असुर:-अन्तिकम्
of Varuna, a demon, in (his) presence
अविज्ञाय-आसुरीम् बेलाम्
not knowing (it to be) the demons' time
प्रविष्टम्-उदकम् निशि
having entered the water at night
A demon, the servant of Varuna, got hold of Nanda and took him in Varuna's presence, for having entered the waters in the night, unknowingly, during the time of the demons' activities.
चक्रुशुस्तमपश्यन्त: कृष्ण रामेति गोपका: ।
भगवांस्तदुपश्रुत्य पितरं वरुणाहृतम् ।
तदन्तिकं गतो राजन् स्वानामभयदो विभु: ॥३॥
चक्रुशु:-तम्-अपश्यन्त:
started calling, him not seeing,
कृष्ण राम-इति गोपका:
Krishna, Balaraama, the cowherds,
भगवान्-तत्-उपश्रुत्य
The Lord that hearing
पितरम् वरुण-आहृतम्
father by Varuna abducted,
तत्-अन्तिकम् गत: राजन्
him near went, O King!
स्वानाम्-अभयद: विभु:
of own devotees fearless-ness granting The Almighty
O King! Not seeing him, the cowherds started calling Krishna and Balaraama. Hearing that, and coming to know of His father's abduction, The Almighty, Who grants fearless-ness to His own devotees, went to Varuna.
प्राप्तं वीक्ष्य हृषीकेशं लोकपाल: सपर्यया ।
महत्या पूजयित्वाऽऽह तद्दर्शनमहोत्सव: ॥४॥
प्राप्तम् वीक्ष्य हृषीकेशम्
arrived, seeing, The Ruler of the senses, (Krishna),
लोकपाल: सपर्यया
the guardian of the sphere, Varuna, with articles
महत्या पूजयित्वा-आह
very well worshipped, and said,
तत्-दर्शन-महोत्सव:
on His sight's festival rejoicing
The guardian of the sphere, Varuna, seeing, The Ruler of the senses, (Krishna), arrived, worshipped Him very well with gifts, rejoicing at the festival of His sight, and said,….
वरुण उवाच -
Varuna said -
अद्य मे निभृतो देहोऽद्यैवार्थोऽधिगत: प्रभो ।
त्वत्पादभाजो भगवन्नवापु: पारमध्वन: ॥५॥
अद्य मे निभृत: देह:-
today, my purpose of body (is fulfilled)
अद्य-एव-अर्थ:-अधिगत:
today only the wealth is attained
प्रभो त्वत्-पाद-भाज:
O Supreme Ruler! Your feet worship
भगवन्-अवापु: पारम्-अध्वन:
O Lord! Having gained, the other side of the path
O Supreme Ruler! Today the purpose of my having a body is fulfilled, and today only I have attained the wealth, the four purposes of human life. O Lord! Having gained the worship of Your feet, I have reached, (crossed) to the other side of the path.
नमस्तुभ्यं भगवते ब्रह्मणे परमात्मने ।
न यत्र श्रूयते माया लोकसृष्टिविकल्पना ॥६॥
नम:-तुभ्यम् भगवते
Salutations to You, O Lord!
ब्रह्मणे परमात्मने
The Brahman! The Supreme Soul!
न यत्र श्रूयते माया
not where, is heard of Maayaa,
लोक-सृष्टि-विकल्पना
of the universe creation is imagined
O Almighty Lord! O Brahman! O Supreme Soul! Salutations to You, in Whom, Maayaa, the cause of the creation of the universe, is not heard of.
अजानता मामकेन मूढेनाकार्यवेदिना ।
आनीतोऽयं तव पिता तद् भवान् क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥७॥
अजानता मामकेन
unknowingly, by my (man)
मूढेन-अकार्य-वेदिना
the dumb, duty not knowing
आनीत:-अयम् तव पिता
is brought this, Your father
तत् भवान् क्षन्तुम्-अर्हसि
him, You, to pardon may be pleased
Your father was unknowingly brought by my man, dumb as he is and does not know his duty. May You be pleased to pardon him.
ममाप्यनुग्रहं कृष्ण कर्तुमर्हस्यशेषदृक् ।
गोविन्द नीयतामेष पिता ते पितृवत्सल ॥८॥
मम्-अपि-अनुग्रहम् कृष्ण
on me also, grace, O Krishna,
कर्तुम्-अर्हसि-अशेष-दृक्
to shower be pleased, O Omniscient Lord!
गोविन्द नीयताम्-एष
O Govinda do take this
पिता ते पितृ-वत्सल
father of Yours, O! of parents fond of
O Krishna! Be pleased to shower Your grace on me also. O Omniscient Lord! Govinda, do take Your father, as You are fond of Your parents.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं प्रसादित: कृष्णो भगवानीश्वरेश्वर: ।
आदायागात् स्वपितरं बन्धूनां चावहन् मुदम् ॥९॥
एवम् प्रसादित: कृष्ण:
thus propitiated Krishna
भगवान्-ईश्वर-ईश्वर:
The Almighty Lord of the worlds
आदाय-अगात् स्व-पितरम्
taking returned, own father,
बन्धूनाम् च-आवहन् मुदम्
of the relations and bringing joy
Krishna, The Almighty Lord of the worlds, thus propitiated by Varuna, returned to Vraja with His father and brought joy to His relatives.
नन्दस्त्वतीन्द्रियं दृष्ट्वा लोकपालमहोदयम् ।
कृष्णे च सन्नतिं तेषां ज्ञातिभ्यो विस्मितोऽब्रवीत् ॥१०॥
नन्द:-तु-अतीन्द्रियम् दृष्ट्वा
Nanda, indeed, the immense witnessing
लोकपाल-महोदयम्
of the sphere's guardian's splendour
कृष्णे च सन्नतिम् तेषाम्
to Krishna and salutations theirs,
ज्ञातिभ्य: विस्मित:-अब्रवीत्
to his kins folk, surprised said
Nanda, indeed was amazed to see the immense splendour of the sphere's guardian Varuna, and witnessing them propitiate Krishna, with surprise said to his kins folk,...
ते त्वौत्सुक्यधियो राजन् मत्वा गोपास्तमीश्वरम् ।
अपि न: स्वगतिं सूक्ष्मामुपाधास्यदधीश्वर: ॥११॥
ते तु-औत्सुक्य-धिय: राजन्
they, in turn, with eager minds, O King!
मत्वा गोपा:-तम्-ईश्वरम्
believing, the Gopas Him to be God
अपि न: स्व-गतिम् सूक्ष्माम्-
will He, us to His own realm (and state), subtle,
उपाधास्यत्-अधीश्वर:
translate, The Supreme Lord?
O King! They, the Gopas, mentally became eager, and believing Him to be God, thought, 'Will The Supreme Lord be pleased to translate us to His own subtle realm, and state?'
इति स्वानां स भगवान् विज्ञायाखिलदृक् स्वयम् ।
सङ्कल्पसिद्धये तेषां कृपयैतदचिन्तयत् ॥१२॥
इति स्वानाम् स: भगवान्
thus, of His own people, He The Almighty Lord,
विज्ञाय-अखिल-दृक् स्वयम्
knowing, The All Knower, Himself,
सङ्कल्प-सिद्धये तेषाम्
the desire to fulfil of theirs,
कृपया-एतत्-अचिन्तयत्
with compassion this thought
He, The Almighty Lord, the Witness of all, by Himself came to know the wish of His own people, and wanting to fulfil it, pondered, thus,…
जनो वै लोक एतस्मिन्नविद्याकामकर्मभि: ।
उच्चावचासु गतिषु न वेद स्वां गतिं भ्रमन् ॥१३॥
जन: वै लोके एतस्मिन्-
human beings, certainly, in world this,
अविद्या-काम-कर्मभि:
by ignorance, desires and Karmas,
उच्च-अवचासु गतिषु
in high and low states,
न वेद स्वाम् गतिम् भ्रमन्
not know, own (essential) character, roaming
'Certainly, in this world, the human beings, compelled by ignorance, desires and past actions, keep revolving in the high and low states of existence, not realizing their essential character."
इति सञ्चिन्त्य भगवान् महाकारुणिको हरि: ।
दर्शयामास लोकं स्वं गोपानां तमस: परम् ॥१४॥
इति सञ्चिन्त्य भगवान्
thus contemplating, The Almighty Lord,
महा-कारुणिक: हरि:
the highly merciful Shree Hari,
दर्शयामास लोकम् स्वम्
revealed the realm own
गोपानाम् तमस: परम्
to the Gopas, of the Prakriti beyond
The Almighty Lord, thus contemplating, the highly merciful Shree Hari, revealed to the Gopas, His own realm, which is beyond Prakriti.
सत्यं ज्ञानमनन्तं यद् ब्रह्म ज्योति: सनातनम् ।
यद्धि पश्यन्ति मुनयो गुणापाये समाहिता: ॥१५॥
सत्यम् ज्ञानम्-अनन्तम् यत्
The Truth, pure Consciousness, Infinite, that
ब्रह्म ज्योति: सनातनम्
Brahman, The Effulgent, Eternal,
यत्-हि पश्यन्ति मुनय:
which indeed realize the sages,
गुण-अपाये समाहिता:
(when) Gunas are transcended and well composed
The Truth, The pure Consciousness, that Infinite Brahman, The Eternal Self Effulgence, which, indeed, the sages realize after transcending the Gunas, and when they are well composed.
ते तु ब्रह्मह्रदम् नीता मग्ना: कृष्णेन चोद्धृता: ।
ददृशुर्ब्रह्मणो लोकं यत्राक्रूरोऽध्यगात् पुरा ॥१६॥
ते तु ब्रह्म-ह्रदम् नीता:
they, indeed, to The Brahman state taken to,
मग्ना: कृष्णेन च-उद्धृता:
were immersed, by Krishna and lifted out
ददृशु:-ब्रह्मण: लोकम्
beheld the Brahman realm
यत्र-अक्रूर:-अध्यगात् पुरा
where Akroora was taken in the past
They were indeed, then, taken to the Brahman state and were immersed there, then, lifted out by Krishna, they beheld the realm of Brahman, where Akroora was taken in the past.
नन्दादयस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा परमानन्दनिर्वृता: ।
कृष्णं च तत्रच्छन्दोभि: स्तूयमानं सुविस्मिता: ॥१७॥
नन्द-आदय:-तु तम् दृष्ट्वा
Nanda and others, indeed, that beholding
परम-आनन्द-निर्वृता:
with supreme joy were exhilarated
कृष्णम् च तत्र छन्दोभि:
Krishna and there, by the (Four) Vedas (in person)
स्तूयमानम् सुविस्मिता:
being extolled, were very much amazed
Nanda and others were exhilarated with supreme joy when they beheld that realm, and also very much amazed, seeing that Krishna was being extolled by the Four Vedas in person.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशम स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे अष्टविंश: अध्याय: ॥२८॥
Thus ends the twenty-eighth discourse in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
