श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अन्तर्हिते भगवति सहसैव व्रजाङ्गना: ।

अतप्यंस्तमचक्षाणा: करिण्य इव यूथपम् ॥१॥


अन्तर्हिते भगवति
on disappearing of The Lord,
सहसा-एव व्रजाङ्गना:
suddenly only, the Vraja beauties,
अतप्यन्-तम्-अचक्षाणा:
were in agony Him not seeing,
करिण्य: इव यूथपम्
she elephants like the leader elephant

All of a sudden, The Lord having disappeared, the beauties of Vraja were in agony, for not seeing Him, just as the she elephants would be in agony, on not seeing the leader elephant of the herd.


गत्यानुरागस्मितविभ्रमेक्षितैर्मनोरमालापविहारविभ्रमै: ।

आक्षिप्तचित्ता: प्रमदा रमापतेस्तास्ता विचेष्टा जगृहुस्तदात्मिका: ॥२॥


गति-अनुराग-स्मित-
(His) gait, loving smile,
विभ्रम-ईक्षितै:-मनोरम-
sportful glances, interesting
आलाप-विहार-विभ्रमै:
conversation, movements and grace
आक्षिप्त-चित्ता: प्रमदा
deluded minded, the damsels,
रमापते:-ता:-ता: विचेष्टा:
of Krishna (Ramaa' spouse), those all actions
जगृहु:-तत्-आत्मिका:
imitated, with Him, identifying themselves

The damsels of Vraja, captivated by the gait, the loving smile, the sportful glances, interesting conversation, movements and grace, of Ramaa's spouse, Shree Krishna, imitated His those very actions, identifying themselves with Him.


गतिस्मितप्रेक्षणभाषणादिषु प्रिया: प्रियस्य प्रतिरूढमूर्तय: ।

असावहं त्वित्यबलास्तदात्मिका न्यवेदिषु: कृष्णविहारविभ्रमा: ॥३॥


गति-स्मित-प्रेक्षण-
in gait, smile, glance,
भाषण-आदिषु प्रिया:
speech, and others, the lovers
प्रियस्य प्रतिरूढ-मूर्तय:
of the beloved identical images
असौ-अहम् तु-इति-अबला:-
'Him I am indeed', thus the women,
तत्-आत्मिका न्यवेदिषु:
Him identifying with, declared
कृष्ण-विहार-विभ्रमा:
by Krishna's sports enraptured

Thus, the women, the lovers identifying with Him, the Beloved, in gait, smile, glance, speech, and other actions, were delved in Krishna's sports, and became identical in His image, and declared, 'Indeed, I am Him!'


गायन्त्य उच्चैरमुमेव संहता विचिक्युरुन्मत्तकवद् वनाद् वनम् ।

पप्रच्छुराकाशवदन्तरं बहिर्भूतेषु सन्तं पुरुषं वनस्पतीन् ॥४॥


गायन्त्य: उच्चै:-अमुम्-एव
singing loudly, Him only,
संहता: विचिक्यु:-
in chorus, searched
उन्मत्तक-वत् वनात् वनम्
mad like, from forest to forest
पप्रच्छु:-आकाशवत्-
enquired, ether like
अन्तरम् बहि:-भूतेषु
inside and outside of the beings (residing)
सन्तम् पुरुषम् वनस्पतीन्
about The Perfect Person, of the trees

They sang loudly, in chorus, about Him only and searched for Him like mad, from forest to forest. The Perfect Person, Who pervades the beings like ether, inside and outside, enquiring about Him of the trees.


दृष्टो व: कच्चिदश्वत्थ प्लक्ष न्यग्रोध न: मन: ।

नन्दसूनुर्गत: हृत्वा प्रेमहासावलोकनै: ॥५॥


दृष्ट: व: कच्चित्-अश्वत्थ
seen you have somewhere, O Ashvattha!
प्लक्ष न्यग्रोध न: मन:
Plaksha! Nyagrodha! Our hearts
नन्द-सूनु:-गत: हृत्वा
Nanda's son has gone, stolen,
प्रेम-हास-अवलोकनै:
by love, smile and glances

'O Ashvattha! Plaksha! Nyagrodha! Have you seen Nanda's son somewhere? He has stolen our hearts by His love, smiles and glances and gone away?'


कच्चित् कुरबकाशोकनागपुन्नागचम्पका: ।

रामानुजो मानिनीनामितो दर्पहरस्मित: ॥६॥


कच्चित् कुरबक-अशोक-
is it, O Kurabakas! Ashoka!
नाग-पुन्नाग-चम्पका:
Naaga! Punnaaga! Champaka!
राम-अनुज: मानिनीनाम्-
Balaraama's younger brother, of the arrogant,
इत: दर्प-हर-स्मित:
from this side, pride taker by smile

O Kurabakas! Ashoka! Naaga! Punnaaga! Champaka! Is it that the younger brother of Balaraama, Shree Krishna gone this way, Who takes away the pride of the arrogant by His smile?


कच्चित्तुलसि कल्याणि गोविन्दचरणप्रिये ।

सह त्वालिकुलैर्बिभ्रद् दृष्टस्तेऽतिप्रियोऽच्युत: ॥७॥


कच्चित्-तुलसि-कल्याणि
is it, O Tulasi! Blessed,
गोविन्द-चरण-प्रिये
of Govinda's feet lover,
सह त्वा-अलि-कुलै:-बिभ्रद्
with you, the bees swarms flaunts
दृष्ट:-ते-अतिप्रिय:-अच्युत:
is seen by you, The very dear Immortal Lord

Is it that, O Blessed Tulasi! You, who are the lover of Govinda's feet, and He, in the garland, along with you flaunts the swarm of bees, That very dear Immortal Lord, is seen by you?


मालत्यदर्शि व: कच्चिन्मल्लिके जाति यूथिके ।

प्रीतिं वो जनयन् यात: करस्पर्शेन माधव: ॥८॥


मालति-अदर्शि व: कच्चित्-
O Maalati! did see, you all, by chance,
मल्लिके जाति यूथिके
O Mallikaa! O Jaati! O Yoothika!
प्रीतिम् व: जनयन् यात:
love in you arousing went
कर-स्पर्शेन माधव:
by hand touching, Shree Krishna

O Maalati! O Mallikaa! O Jaati! O Yoothika! by chance, did you all see Shree Krishna, going this way arousing love in you by the touch of His hand?


चूतप्रियालपनसासनकोविदारजम्ब्वर्कबिल्वबकुलाम्रकदम्बनीपा: ।

येऽन्ये परार्थभवका यमुनोपकूला: शंसन्तु कृष्णपदवीं रहितात्मनां न: ॥९॥


चूत-प्रियाल-पनस-असन-
O Choota, Priyaala, Panasas, Asana,
कोविदार-जम्बु-अर्क-बिल्व-
Kovidaara, Jamboo, Arka, Bilwa,
बकुल-आम्र कदम्ब-नीपा:
Bakula, Aamra, Kadamba, Neepa
ये-अन्ये परार्थ-भवका
those others for other's benefit born,
यमुना-उपकूला: शंसन्तु
on Yamuna's bank, direct
कृष्ण-पदवीम् रहित-आत्मनाम् न:
Krishna's path, without ourselves us

O Choota, (Mango) Priyaala, Panasa,(Jackfruit) Asana, Kovidaara, Jamboo,(Rose-apple) Arka,(Sun plant) Bilwa, Bakula, Aamra,(Mango) Kadamba, Neepa, and those others of you, born for the good of others, do direct us, whose minds are not with ourselves, to the path taken by Krishna.


किं ते कृतं क्षिति तपो बत केशवाङ्घ्रिस्पर्शोत्सवोत्पुलकिताङ्गरुहैर्विभासि ।

अप्यङ्घ्रिसम्भव उरुक्रमविक्रमाद् वा आहो वराहवपुष: परिरम्भणेन ॥१०॥


किम् ते कृतम् क्षिति
what by you was performed, O Earth!
तप: बत केशव-अङ्घ्रि-स्पर्श-
austerity, indeed, (that) by Keshava's feet's' touch
उत्सव-उत्-पुलकित-
festival, definitely, horripilated
अङ्ग-रुहै:-विभासि
limbs trees are adorned
अपि-अङ्घ्रि-सम्भव
or of the feet's touch
उरु-क्रम-विक्रमात् वा आहो
of giant strides undertaking (as Vaamana), or yet again
वराह-वपुष: परिरम्भणेन
by the Divine Boar's form's embrace

O Earth! What austerities were performed by you, that celebrating the festival of the touch of Shree Krishna's feet, your limbs have horripilation, in the form of the trees shrubs and branches, which adorn you ? Or, is it by the touch of His feet in the descent of Vaamana, when He took giant strides, or yet again, is it because earlier, you were embraced by Him in the form of The Divine Boar?


अप्येणपत्न्युपगत: प्रिययेह गात्रैस्तन्वन् दृशां सखि सुनिर्वृतिमच्युतो व: ।

कान्ताङ्गसङ्गकुचकुङ्कुमरञ्जिताया: कुन्दस्रज: कुलपतेरिह वाति गन्ध: ॥११॥


अपि-एणपत्न्य-उपगत:
is it, O she deers, along with
प्रियया-इह गात्रै:
beloved, here, by (His) form
तन्वन् दृशाम् सखि
to gift the eyes, O Friend!
सुनिर्वृतिम्-अच्युत: व:
the liberating, The Immortal Krishna, to you all
कान्ता-अङ्ग-सङ्ग
by His beloved embrace
कुच-कुङ्कुम-रञ्जिताया:
breasts' saffron smeared
कुन्द-स्रज: कुल-पते:-इह
the Kunda garland, of the race Protector (Krishna),here,
वाति गन्ध:
blows the fragrance

O She deers! Is it that to gift you all the liberating sight of His form, that The Immortal Shree Krishna has come here with His beloved? O Friends! the fragrance of the Kunda flowers garland, which is worn by Krishna, and which is smeared by the saffron of His beloved's breasts, when embracing her, is permeated in the breeze blowing here.


बाहुं प्रियांस उपधाय गृहीतपद्मो रामानुजस्तुलसिकालिकुलैर्मदान्धै: ।

अन्वीयमान इह वस्तरव: प्रणामं किं वाभिनन्दति चरन् प्रणयावलोकै: ॥१२॥


बाहुम् प्रिया-अंसे उपधाय
arm, on beloved's shoulder resting
गृहीत-पद्म: राम-अनुज:-
(in the other) holding a lotus, Balaraama's younger brother
तुलसिका-अलि-कुलै:-मद-अन्धै:
on Tulasi, by the bees swarms, intoxication blinded
अन्वीयमान: इह व:-तरव:
followed, here, of you, O Trees!
प्रणामम् किम् वा-अभिनन्दति
Greetings, is it, or reciprocates
चरन् प्रणय-अवलोकै:
conveying by his loving glances

O Trees! Did Krishna happen to be here, with His arm resting on the shoulder of His beloved and holding a lotus in the other hand, followed by the swarms of bees intoxication blinded by the fragrance of His Tulasi and wild flower garlands? Or, did He reciprocate your greetings to Him, conveyed by His loving glances?


पृच्छतेमा लता बाहूनप्याश्लिष्टा वनस्पते: ।

नूनं तत्करजस्पृष्टा बिभ्रत्युत्पुलकान्यहो ॥१३॥


पृच्छत-इमा: लता: बाहूनि-
ask, these creepers, by arms
अपि-आश्लिष्टा: वनस्पते:
though, embraced of the trees,
नूनम् तत्-करज-स्पृष्टा:
certainly, by His nails are touched
बिभ्रति-उत्पुलकानि-अहो
exhibiting horripilation, Oh!

Oh! Ask these creepers! Who, though embraced by the arms (branches) of the trees (their husbands), are certainly touched by His (Krishna's) nails, (when plucking flowers), as they exhibit horripilation, (as sprouts).


इत्युन्मत्तवचो गोप्य: कृष्णान्वेषणकातरा: ।

लीला भगवतस्तास्ता ह्यनुचक्रुस्तदात्मिका: ॥१४॥


इति-उन्मत्त-वच: गोप्य:
thus, mad like words, the Gopis,
कृष्ण-अन्वेषण-कातरा:
in Krishna's search distressed,
लीला भगवत:-ता:-ता:
the sports of The Lord, all those,
हि-अनुचक्रु:-तत्-आत्मिका:
indeed imitated, Him identifying with

Thus the Gopis, distressed by the search of Krishna, rambled like mad men. They identified themselves with Him, and imitated His various pastimes.


कस्याश्चित् पूतनायन्त्या: कृष्णायन्त्यपिबत् स्तनम् ।

तोकायित्वा रुदत्यन्या पदाहञ्छकटायतीम् ॥१४॥


कस्या:-चित् पूतना-अयन्त्या:
of some one, Pootanaa imitating,
कृष्ण-अयन्ति-अपिबत् स्तनम्
Krishna imitating, sucked the breast
तोक-अयित्वा रुदति-अन्या
infant imitating, cried the other,
पद-आहन्-शकट-अयतीम्
by foot hitting, the cart personifying

Of the one, who imitated Pootanaa, the other imitating Krishna, sucked the breast, another one became and infant Krishna and cried, while the third personified as the cart, was kicked by the fourth, as Krishna had done.


दैत्यायित्वा जहारान्यामेका कृष्णार्भभावनाम् ।

रिङ्गयामास काप्यङ्घ्री कर्षन्ती घोषनि:स्वनै: ॥१६॥


दैत्य-आयित्वा जहार-अन्याम्-
demon became, took away
एका कृष्ण-अर्भ-भावनाम्
one, Krishna as a child fancying (herself to be)
रिङ्गयामास कापि-अङ्घ्री
crawled some other feet
कर्षन्ती घोष-नि:स्वनै:
dragging, the anklets sounding

One of them became a demon and took away the other who fancied herself to be the child Krishna, yet another crawled dragging the feet and sounding the anklets.


कृष्णरामायिते द्वे तु गोपायन्त्यश्च काश्चन ।

वत्सायतीं हन्ति चान्या तत्रैका तु बकायतीम् ॥१७॥


कृष्ण-राम-आयिते द्वे तु
Krishna and Balaraama, copying, both indeed,
गोप-आयन्त्य:-च काश्चन
a Gopa became and another
वत्स-आयतीम् हन्ति च-अन्या
the Vatsa (demon) became, hits and the other
तत्र-एका तु बक-आयतीम्
there, another one Bakaasura became

Two of them imitated Krishna and Balaraama, the others became the Gopas. One of them imitated the Vatsa demon and hit the other, while yet another one became the Bakaasura.


आहूय दूरगा यद्वत् कृष्णस्तमनुकुर्वतीम् ।

वेणुं क्वणन्तीं क्रीडन्तीमन्या: शंसन्ति साध्विति ॥१८॥


आहूय दूर-गा: यत्-वत्
calling the far gone (cows), which like
कृष्ण:-तम्-अनुकुर्वतीम्
Krishna, Him imitating,
वेणुम् क्वणन्तीम् क्रीडन्तीम्-
the flute playing, sported
अन्या: शंसन्ति साधु-इति
the other, applauded (the other) 'well done' thus

The one, which like Krishna behaved, imitating Him, called the far ventured cows, while the other played the flute and yet another sported like Him and the other one applauded, saying 'Well done' thus.


कस्यांचित् स्वभुजं न्यस्य चलन्त्याहापरा ननु ।

कृष्णोऽहं पश्यति गतिं ललितामिति तन्मना: ॥१९॥


कस्याम्-चित् स्व-भुजम् न्यस्य
on some ones' own arm placed
चलन्ति-आह-अपरा ननु
walking, said to another, certainly,
कृष्ण:-अहम् पश्यति गतिम्
'Krishna I am, 'Look at the gait
ललिताम्-इति तत्-मना:
graceful', thus in Him absorbed minded

Some one of them, with her mind absorbed in Him, walked around placing her hand on another ones shoulder, and said, "I am Krishna, look at My graceful gait.'


मा भैष्ट वातवर्षाभ्यां तत्त्राणं विहितं मया ।

इत्युक्त्वैकेन हस्तेन यतन्त्युन्निदधेऽम्बरम् ॥२०॥


मा भैष्ट वात-वर्षाभ्याम्
’Don’t be afraid of the wind and rain,
तत्-त्राणम् विहितम् मया
from that protection is arranged by Me'
इति-उक्त्वा-एकेन हस्तेन
thus saying, with one hand
यतन्ति-उन्निदधे-अम्बरम्
with effort, upheld her scarf

'Don’t be afraid of the wind and the rain! I have made arrangements for the protection from that.' So saying, she held up her scarf with one hand, exhibiting effort.


आरुह्यैका पदाऽऽक्रम्य शिरस्याहापरां नृप ।

दुष्टाहे गच्छ जातोऽहं खलानां ननु दण्डधृक् ॥२१॥


आरुह्य-एका पदा-आक्रम्य
getting on, one, by the foot standing,
शिरस्य-आह-अपराम् नृप
on the head (of another) said to the other, O King!
दुष्ट-अहे गच्छ जात:-अहम्
'O wicked snake, go away, born am I
खलानाम् ननु दण्ड-धृक्
for the wicked, indeed, punishment upholder'

One of the Gopis got over the head of the other and standing there, said to yet another, 'O wicked snake get away, I am born as the upholder of punishment for the wicked.'


तत्रैकोवाच हे गोपा दावाग्निं पश्यतोल्बणम् ।

चक्षूंष्याश्वपिदध्वं वो विधास्ये क्षेममञ्जसा ॥२२॥


तत्र-एक-उवाच हे गोपा
there, one said, 'O Gopas!
दावाग्निम् पश्यत-उल्बणम्
The wild fire look at the fierce!
चक्षूंषि-आशु-अपिदध्वम् व:
eyes soon shut you all,
विधास्ये क्षेमम्-अञ्जसा
will restore protection easily'

There, one of them said, 'O Gopas! Look at the fierce wild fire. Shut your eyes at once. I will easily restore protection.'


बद्धान्यया स्रजा काचित्तन्वी तत्र उलूखले ।

भीता सुदृक् पिधायास्यं भेजे भीतिविडम्बनम् ॥२३॥


बद्धा-अन्यया स्रजा काचित्-
tied by another one by a garland, some
तन्वी तत्र उलूखले
slender beauty, there to the mortar
भीता सुदृक् पिधाय-आस्यम्
afraid, with lovely eyes, covering the face,
भेजे भीतिविडम्बनम्
put up of fear a show

Some slender beauty, afraid, (like Yashoda), to the mortar like Gopi, tied with a garland, the beautiful eyed Gopi, (Krishna), who covered her face with the hands and put up a show of fear.


एवं कृष्णं पृच्छमाना वृन्दावनलतास्तरून् ।

व्यचक्षत वनोद्देशे पदानि परमात्मन: ॥२४॥


एवम् कृष्णम् पृच्छमाना
in this manner, Krishna asking about
वृन्दावन-लता:-तरून्
to Vrindaavan's creepers and trees,
व्यचक्षत वन-उद्देशे
noticed, in the forest's part
पदानि परम-आत्मन:
foot prints of The Supreme Spirit

In this manner, the Gopis asking the creepers and trees of Vrindaavana about Shree Krishna, in a part of the forest, noticed the foot prints of The Supreme Spirit, incarnate as The Lord Krishna.


पदानि व्यक्तमेतानि नन्दसूनोर्महात्मन: ।

लक्ष्यन्ते हि ध्वजाम्भोजवज्राङ्कुशयवादिभि: ॥२५॥


पदानि व्यक्तम्-एतानि
foot prints obviously, these are
नन्द-सूनो:-महात्मन:
of Nanda's Darling, The Great Soul,
लक्ष्यन्ते हि ध्वजा-अम्भोज-
are seen indeed a flag, a lotus,
वज्र-अङ्कुश-यव-आदिभि:
a thunderbolt, a goad, and a barley and others

Obviously these are the foot prints of The Great Soul, Nanda's Darling, as the signs of a flag, a lotus, a thunderbolt, a goad, and a barley seed and others are clearly seen.


तैस्तै: पदैस्तत्पदवीमन्विच्छन्त्योऽग्रतोऽबला: ।

वध्वा: पदै: सुपृक्तानि विलोक्यार्ता: समब्रुवन् ॥२६॥


तै:-तै:: पदै:-तत्-पदवीम्-
by those all foot prints, His path
अन्विच्छन्त्य:-अग्रत:-अबला:
tracking, went forward the helpless women
वध्वा: पदै: सुपृक्तानि
interspersed with the foot prints, well defined (foot prints)
विलोक्य-आर्ता: समब्रुवन्
finding, pained, they said,

Following those foot prints, they were tracking the path of Shree Krishna. As the helpless women went forward, they found interspersed with the foot prints were other well defined foot prints of a lady. Pained at heart, they said,….


कस्या: पदानि चैतानि याताया नन्दसूनुना ।

अंसन्यस्तप्रकोष्ठाया: करेणो: करिणा यथा ॥२७॥


कस्या: पदानि च-एतानि
whose foot prints and are these,
याताया: नन्द-सूनुना
going along with Nanda's Darling
अंस-न्यस्त-प्रकोष्ठाया:
on the (His) shoulder placed her hand
करेणो: करिणा यथा
she elephant with the elephant like

Whose foot prints are these? Who is she, who has gone along with The Darling of Nanda, with His arm placed on her shoulder, like a she elephant going with an elephant?


अनयाऽऽराधितो नूनं भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ।

यन्नो विहाय गोविन्द: प्रीतो यामनयद् रह: ॥२८॥


अनया-आराधित: नूनम्
by her was worshipped definitely
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
The Lord, Shree Hari, The Almighty
यत्-न: विहाय गोविन्द:
in that, us forsaking, Govinda
प्रीत: याम्-अनयद् रह:
enamoured, whom took in seclusion

'Definitely, The Lord Shree Hari, The All-mighty was well worshipped by her, in that abandoning us all, Govinda, enamoured by her, has taken her into seclusion.'


धन्या अहो अमी आल्यो गोविन्दाङ्घ्र्यब्जरेणव: ।

यान् ब्रह्मेशो रमा देवी दधुर्मूर्ध्न्यघनुत्तये ॥२९॥


धन्या: अहो अमी आल्य:
blessed are Oh! These, O Friends!
गोविन्द-अङ्ग्घ्रि-अब्ज-रेणव:
of Govinda's feet lotus dust particles
यान् ब्रह्मा-ईश: रमा देवी
which Brahmaa, Shiva, Ramaa Goddess
दधु:-मूर्ध्नि-अघनुत्तये
took on the heads, separation pangs to avoid

Oh! Friends! Oh! Blessed indeed are these dust particles of Govinda's feet, as they are placed on the head by Brahmaa, Shiva, Goddess Ramaa, to avoid the pangs of separation.


तस्या अमूनि न: क्षोभं कुर्वन्त्युच्चै: पदानि यत् ।

यैकापहृत्य गोपीनां रहो भुङ्क्तेऽच्युताधरम् ॥३०॥


तस्या: अमूनि न: क्षोभम्
her, these, in us distress
कुर्वन्ति-उच्चै: पदानि यत्
are causing greatly, the foot prints, in that,
या-एका-अपहृत्य गोपीनाम्
who alone, snatching away, (the property)of all the Gopis,
रह: भुङ्क्ते-अच्युत-अधरम्
in seclusion, enjoys The Immortal Lord's lips

These foot prints of the one who has snatched away the property of all the Gopis, are causing us distress, as, in seclusion, she is enjoying the nectar of the lips of The Immortal Lord.


न लक्ष्यन्ते पदान्यत्र तस्या नूनं तृणाङ्कुरै: ।

खिद्यत्सुजाताङ्घ्रितलामुन्निन्ये प्रेयसीं प्रिय: ॥३१॥


न लक्ष्यन्ते पदानि-अत्र
are not seen foot prints here,
तस्या: नूनम् तृण-अङ्कुरै:
hers, certainly, by grass and sprouts
खिद्यत्-सुजात्-अङ्घ्रि-तलाम्-
(may not) prick the delicate feet soles,
उन्निन्ये प्रेयसीम् प्रिय:
lifted up the beloved, the lover

Here, the foot prints are certainly not to be seen. The delicate soles of her feet may not be pricked by the grass and thorns, so, The Lover may have lifted up His lady-love.


इमान्यधिकमग्नानि पदानि वहतो वधूम् ।

गोप्य: पश्यत कृष्णस्य भाराक्रान्तस्य कामिन: ॥३२॥


इमानि-अधिक-मग्नानि
these, are more deep
पदानि वहत: वधूम्
the foot prints, carrying the Gopi,
गोप्य: पश्यत कृष्णस्य
O Gopis! Look! of Krishna
भार-आक्रान्तस्य कामिन:
weight oppressed, love stricken

'O Gopis! Look! These foot impressions are deeper, as The love-stricken Krishna was oppressed by the weight of the Gopi.


अत्र अवरोपिता कान्ता पुष्पहेतोर्महात्मना ।

अत्र प्रसूनावचय: प्रियार्थे प्रेयसा कृत: ।

प्रपदाक्रमेण एते पश्यतासकले पदे ॥३३॥


अत्र अवरोपिता कान्ता
here, was set down the lady,
पुष्प-हेतो:-महात्मना
flowers to gather, by The High Souled,
अत्र प्रसून-अवचय:
here, the flowers were plucked,
प्रिया-अर्थे प्रेयसा कृत:
for the lady love's sake, by the beloved done
प्रपद-आक्रमेण एते पश्यत-
the forefeet trodden on, these, do see!
असकले पदे
are half foot prints

Here, the lady love was set down by The High Souled, for the sake of plucking flowers for the beloved. O Look! At these half imprints of the feet, as the fore-feet have been trodden on for that purpose.


केशप्रसाधनं त्वत्र कामिन्या: कामिना कृतम् ।

तानि चूडयता कान्तामुपविष्टमिह ध्रुवम् ॥३४॥


केश-प्रसाधनम् तु-अत्र
hair setting, indeed, here,
कामिन्या: कामिना कृतम्
of the lover lady, by the love stricken is done
तानि चूडयता कान्ताम्-
them to tie (with flowers) with the lady
उपविष्टम्-इह ध्रुवम्
were sitting here undoubtedly

Indeed, here by The Love stricken Lord the hair setting of the lover lady was done. And undoubtedly, here He sat with the lady for long to tie the hair with flowers.


रेमे तया चात्मरत आत्मारामोऽप्यखण्डित: ।

कामिनां दर्शयन् दैन्यं स्त्रीणां चैव दुरात्मताम् ॥३५॥


रेमे तया च-आत्म-रत
sported with her, and in Self sporting,
आत्मा-राम:-अपि-अखण्डित:
in Self delighted, even without break,
कामिनाम् दर्शयन् दैन्यम्
to the passionate illustrating plight
स्त्रीणाम् च-एव दुरात्मताम्
of the women and also evil mindedness

Though The Lord sports in Himself and is delighted by Himself, without break, He sported with the lady, illustrating to the passionate the plight of the love stricken, and also the evil mindedness of the women.


इत्येवं दर्शयन्त्यस्ताश्चेरुर्गोप्यो विचेतस: ।

यां गोपीमनयत् कृष्णो विहायान्या: स्त्रियो वने ॥३६॥


इति-एवम् दर्शयन्त्य:-ता:-
this, in this manner, pointing out, they
चेरु:-गोप्य: विचेतस:
roamed, the Gopis bewildered
याम् गोपीम्-अनयत् कृष्ण:
the Gopi, whom took away Krishna,
विहाय-अन्या: स्त्रिय: वने
leaving the other women in the forest

In this manner, pointing out the foot prints to each other, the bewildered Gopis roamed. The Gopi, whom Krishna had taken away, leaving the other women in the forest,….


सा च मेने तदाऽऽत्मानं वरिष्ठं सर्वयोषिताम् ।

हित्वा गोपी: कामयाना मामसौ भजते प्रिय: ॥३७॥


सा च मेने तदा-आत्मानम्
she, and thought, then, herself
वरिष्ठम् सर्व-योषिताम्
superior of all women
हित्वा गोपी: कामयाना:
leaving the Gopis loving,
माम्-असौ भजते प्रिय:
me, He enjoys The Beloved

She, then, thought herself to be superior of all women, as, 'leaving all the lover Gopis, He, The Beloved enjoys my company'.


ततोगत्वा वनोद्देशं दृप्ता केशवमब्रवीत् ।

न पारयेऽहं चलितुं नय मां यत्र ते मन: ॥३८॥


तत:-गत्वा वनोद्देशम्
from there going into the forest area,
दृप्ता केशवम्-अब्रवीत्
she the arrogant, to Keshava said,
न पारये-अहम् चलितुम्
'not able I am to walk,
नय माम् यत्र ते मन:
carry me to where ever You like'

Then going into the vicinity of the forest, she, the arrogant one said to Keshava, 'I am unable to walk, carry me to where ever You like.'


एवमुक्त: प्रियामाह स्कन्ध आरुह्यतामिति ।

ततश्चान्तर्दधे कृष्ण: सा वधूरन्वतप्यत ॥३९॥


एवम्-उक्त: प्रियाम्-आह
thus told, to the beloved said,
स्कन्धे आरुह्यताम्-इति
'On the shoulder get up', thus,
तत:-च:-अन्तर्दधे कृष्ण:
then, and, disappeared Krishna,
सा वधू:-अन्वतप्यत
she, the Gopi, repented

Thus requested, Krishna said to the beloved,' Get up on My shoulder'. And then, He disappeared. She, the Gopi repented and said,…


हा नाथ रमण प्रेष्ठ क्वासि क्वासि महाभुज ।

दास्यास्ते कृपणाया मे सखे दर्शय सन्निधिम् ॥४०॥


हा नाथ रमण प्रेष्ठ
'O Lord! delighter of the soul!
क्व-असि क्व-असि महा-भुज
where are You? Where are You? O Mighty armed One!
दास्या:-ते कृपणाया: मे
servant Your, to the helpless me,
सखे दर्शय सन्निधिम्
O Friend show (Your) presence

'O Lord! delighter of the soul! where are You? Where are You? O Mighty armed One! O friend of Your helpless servant! Show me Your presence!'


अन्विच्छन्त्यो भगवतो मार्गं गोप्योऽविदूरत: ।

ददृशु: प्रियविश्लेषमोहितां दु:खितां सखीम् ॥४१॥


अन्विच्छन्त्य: भगवत:
searching The Lord's
मार्गम् गोप्य:-अविदूरत:
path, the Gopis, not far away
ददृशु: प्रिय-विश्लेष
saw, from the beloved separated
मोहिताम् दु:खिताम् सखीम्
unconscious and sad the companion

Looking around for The Lord's path, the Gopis saw, not very far away, their companion, fainted and sad by the separation from The Beloved.


तया कथितमाकर्ण्य मानप्राप्तिं च माधवात् ।

अवमानं च दौरात्म्याद् विस्मयं परमं ययु: ॥४२॥


तया कथितम्-आकर्ण्य
by her narrated, hearing
मान-प्राप्तिम् च माधवात्
honour received and from Maadhava,
अवमानम् च दौरात्म्यात्
disregard and by evil mindedness,
विस्मयम् परमम् ययु:
wonder struck were greatly

The Gopis hearing the account narrated by her, about the honour received by Maadhava, and the disregard earned due to her evil mindedness, were greatly struck with wonder.


ततोऽविशन् वनं चन्द्रज्योत्सना यावद् विभाव्यते ।

तम: प्रविष्टमालक्ष्य ततो निववृतु: स्त्रिय: ॥४३॥


तत:-अविशन् वनम् चन्द्र-
then, entered the forest, moon
ज्योत्सना यावद् विभाव्यते
light up to brightens,
तम: प्रविष्टम्-आलक्ष्य
darkness, seeping noticing,
तत: निववृतु: स्त्रिय:
from there returned the women

Then the women entered the forest up to where the moon light brightened it. Then, noticing darkness setting in, they returned from there.


तन्मनस्कास्तदालापास्तद्विचेष्टास्तदात्मिका: ।

तद्गुणानेव गायन्त्यो नात्मागाराणि सस्मरु: ॥४४॥


तत्-मनस्का:-तत्-आलापा:-
In Him minded, Him talking of,
तत्-विचेष्टा:-तत्-आत्मिका:
His activity (imitating), Him, one with
तत् गुणान्-एव गायन्त्य:
His virtues only singing of,
न-आत्म-आगाराणि सस्मरु:
did not own houses remember

The Gopis, were mentally engrossed in Him, they talked of Him, imitated His actions, and identified themselves with Him, and were singing of His virtues alone, so much so, they did not remember their own selves or their houses.


पुन: पुलिनमागत्य कालिन्द्या: कृष्णभावना: ।

समवेता जगु: कृष्णं तदागमनकाङ्क्षिता: ॥४५॥


पुन: पुलिनम्-आगत्य
again to the bank returning
कालिन्द्या: कृष्ण-भावना:
of Yamunaa, (river) Krishna thinking of,
समवेता: जगु: कृष्णम्
together sang of Krishna,
तत्-आगमन
His return longing for

They came back to the bank of the river Yamunaa, and thinking of Krishna, sang of Krishnaa, in chorus, longing for His return.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे रासक्रीडायां कृष्णान्वेषणम् नाम त्रिंश: अध्याय ॥३०॥


Thus ends the thirtieth discourse entitled, 'The Gopis' Quest for Shree Krishna during the Raasa Play,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
