The Gopis said -
जयति तेऽधिकं जन्मना व्रज: श्रयत इन्दिरा शश्वदत्र हि ।
दयित दृश्यतां दिक्षु तावकास्त्वयि धृतासवस्त्वां विचिन्वते ॥१॥
जयति ते-अधिकम्

शश्वत्-अत्र हि
constantly, here only
दयित दृश्यताम्
O Beloved Lord! Reveal
दिक्षु तावका:-
in all directions, Your own people
त्वयि धृत-आसव:-
in You placed (their) lives
त्वाम् विचिन्वते
You are looking for
O Lord! Vraja is all the more brightened by Your birth, and so Laxmi constantly dwells here only. O Beloved Lord! Do reveal Yourself, see, How Your own people, placing their lives in You, are looking for You, in all directions.
शरदुदाशये साधुजातसत्सरसिजोदरश्रीमुषा दृशा ।
सुरतनाथ तेऽशुल्कदासिका वरद निघ्नतो नेह किं वध: ॥२॥

O Bestower of boons! Killing,
न-इह किम् वध:
not here, is it a massacre
O Bestower of enjoyment! With Your eyes, stealing the beauty of the centre of the well blooming beautiful lotus in the waters of the pond in the Autumn, killing us, Your unpaid servants, O Bestower of boons! Is it no massacring here by You?
विषजलाप्ययाद् व्यालराक्षसाद् वर्षमारुताद् वैद्युतानलात् ।
वृषमयात्मजाद् विश्वतोभयादृषभ ते वयं रक्षिता मुहु: ॥३॥
विष-जल-आप्ययात्
poisoned water from death
व्याल-राक्षसात्
from snake and demons,
वर्ष-मारुतात्
from rain and storm,
वैद्युत-अनलात्
from thunder and fire
वृषमय-आत्मजात्
calf disguised and Vyomaasura,
विश्वत:-भयात्-
from the so many worldly perils
ऋषभ ते वयम्
O Jewel among men! By You, we
रक्षिता: मुहु:
were protected again and again
O Jewel among men! We were saved by You again and again, from death by poisonous water, from snake and demons, from rain and storms, from thunder and fire, from the demon disguised as a calf, and the demon Vyomaasura.
न खलु गोपिकानन्दनो भवानखिलदेहिनामन्तरात्मदृक् ।
विखनसार्थितो विश्वगुप्तये सख उदेयिवान् सात्वतां कुले ॥४॥
न खलु गोपिका-
not only indeed to the Gopi
आनन्दन: भवान्-
delight giver are You
अखिल-देहिनाम्-
for all the embodied beings
अन्तर-आत्म-दृक्
inside dwelling witness
विखनस-अर्थित:
by Brahmaa requested
विश्व-गुप्तये
to the world protect
सखे उदेयिवान्
O Friend! Are born
सात्वताम् कुले
in Yadus' race
Indeed, You are not just the delight giver to Gopi Yashodaa, being her son, You are the indwellers witness of all embodied beings. Requested by Brahmaa, You have appeared in the race of the Yadus.
विरचिताभयं वृष्णिधुर्य ते चरणमीयुषां संसृतेर्भयात् ।
करसरोरुहं कान्त कामदं शिरसि धेहि न: श्रीकरग्रहम् ॥५॥
विरचित-अभयम्
is promised protection
वृष्णि-धुर्य ते
O Chief of the Vrishnees! Your
चरणम्-ईयुषाम्
feet seeking
संसृते:-भयात्
from the transmigration fear
कर-सरोरुहम्
hand lotus
कान्त काम-दम्
O Dear One! The desire fulfiller
शिरसि देहि न:
on heads place ours
श्री-कर-ग्रहम्
of Laxmi The hand Holder!
O Chief of the Vrishnees! Protection has been promised by You. Yet, for those like us who are afraid of transmigration and seek Your feet, O Dear One! Place Your lotus hand on our heads, which holds the hand of Laxmi and fulfils all desires.
व्रजजनार्तिहन् वीर योषिताम् निजजनस्मयध्वंसनस्मित ।
भज सखे भवत्किङ्करी: स्म नो जलरुहाननं चारु दर्शय ॥६॥
व्रज-जन-आर्ति-हन्
of Vraja people, suffering The alleviator!
वीर योषिताम्
O gallant Lord! of the women (us)
निज-जन-स्मय
own peoples' pride
ध्वंसन-स्मित
curbing smile
भज सखे भवत्-
take (us) O Friend! Your
किङ्करी: स्म न:
servants are we
जलरुह-आननम्
lotus face
चारु दर्शय
beautiful do reveal
O Alleviator! of the sufferings of the people of Vraja, O Gallant Lord! Whose smile curbs the pride of Your own people, O Friend! Do reveal to us Your lotus like beautiful face and take us in Your duty, as we are Your servants.
प्रणत देहिनां पापकर्षनं तृणचरानुगं श्रीनिकेतनम् ।
फणिफणार्पितं ते पदाम्बुजं कृणु कुचेषु न: कृन्धि हृच्छयम् ॥७॥
प्रणत देहिनाम्
bow down to You, the embodied beings
पाप-कर्षनम्
sins draws away
तृणचर-अनुगम्
of the grass grazing (calves) The Follower
श्री-निकेतनम्
of beauty and prosperity The Abode!
फणि-फण-अर्पितम्
on the snake's hood placed
ते पद-अम्बुजम्
Your feet lotus
कृणु कुचेषु न:
place on breasts ours
कृन्धि हृत्-क्षयम्
and soothe the hearts' pangs
The feet which draw away the sins of those embodied beings, who bow at them, Which follow the grass grazing calves, Which are the abode of beauty and prosperity, Which were placed on the hoods of the snake, Those lotus feet of Yours, do place on our breast and soothe our love lorn pangs of suffering.
मधुरया गिरा वल्गुवाक्यया बुधमनोज्ञया पुष्करेक्षण ।
विधिकरीरिमा वीर मुह्यतीरधरसीधुनाऽऽप्याययस्व न: ॥८॥

O Lotus eyed One!
विधिकरी:-इमा:
ever ready to do (Your) bidding, these
वीर मुह्यती:-
O Valiant One! Charmed
अधर-सीधुना-
by the lips' nectar
आप्याययस्व न:
revive by making drink us
O Lotus eyed Lord! By Your melodious voice, witty words, pleasing to the learned, we are charmed. O Valiant One! Make us drink the nectar of Your lips and revive us, we, who are ever ready to do Your bidding.
तव कथामृतं तप्तजीवनं कविभिरीडितं कल्मषापहम् ।
श्रवणमङ्गलं श्रीमदाततं भुवि गृणन्ति ते भूरिदा जना: ॥९॥
तव कथा-अमृतम्
Your stories, nectar like,
तप्त-जीवनम्
for the afflicted in life,
कविभि:-ईडितम्
by the wise is declared,
कल्मष-आपहम्
are sin dispensing
श्रवण-मङ्गलम्
hearing (them) brings auspiciousness
श्रीमद्-आततम्
and are well-being drawing
भुवि गृणन्ति ते
on this earth who recite, they are
भूरिदा: जना:
very charity minded people
O Lord! It is declared by the wise that Your stories are like nectar for those afflicted in life, as, by hearing them auspiciousness and well-being are drawn and the sins are dispensed with. On this earth, those who recite them are the most charity minded people.
प्रहसितं प्रिय प्रेमवीक्षणं विहरणं च ते ध्यानमङ्गलम् ।
रहसि संविदो या हृदिस्पृश: कुहक नो मन: क्षोभयन्ति हि ॥१०॥
प्रहसितम् प्रिय
laughter, O Beloved!
प्रेम-वीक्षणम्
loving glances,
विहरणम् च ते
pastimes and Yours
ध्यान-मङ्गलम्
to contemplate on are auspicious
रहसि संविद:
in secret the jokes
या हृदि-स्पृश:
which are heart touching
कुहक न: मन:
O Deceitful Beloved! Our minds
क्षोभयन्ति हि
agitate, indeed
O Beloved! Your hearty laughter, loving glances, pastimes, and the heart touching jokes made in secret, are auspicious to contemplate on, but, O Deceitful Beloved! They agitate our minds now, that You are away.
चलसि यद् व्रजाच्चारयन् पशून् नलिनसुन्दरं नाथ ते पदम् ।
शिलतृणाङ्कुरै: सीदतीति न: कलिलतां मन: कान्त गच्छति ॥११॥
चलसि यद् व्रजात्-
go as from Vraja,
चारयन् पशून्
pasturing the cattle
नलिन-सुन्दरम्
lotus beautiful
नाथ ते पदम्
O Lord! Your feet
शिल-तृण-अङ्कुरै:
by thorns, grass, and sprouts
सीदति-इति न:
is pricked, so thinking, our
कलिलताम् मन:
disturbed minds
कान्त गच्छति
O Beloved! become
O Lord! As You go from Vraja pasturing the cattle, lotus looking beautiful Your feet are pricked by the thorns, grass blades and sprouts, so thinking, O Beloved! Our minds get disturbed.
दिनपरिक्षये नीलकुन्तलैर्वनरुहाननं बिभ्रदावृतम् ।
घनरजस्वलं दर्शयन् मुहुर्मनसि न: स्मरं वीर यच्छसि ॥१२॥
दिन-परिक्षये
at the day's end
नील-कुन्तलै:-
with dark curls
वन-रुह-आननम्
lotus like face
बिभ्रत्-आवृतम्
shines surrounded
घन-रज-स्वलम्
by the clouds of dust covered
दर्शयन् मुहु:-
revealing now and then,
मनसि न: स्मरम्
in our minds love
वीर यच्छसि
O gallant Lord! Enkindles
At the end of the day, Your face covered by the dark curls, shines like the lotus surrounded by dark bees, which is revealed to us now and then. O Lord! That enkindles love in our minds.
प्रणतकामदं पद्मजार्चितं धरणिमण्डनं ध्येयमापदि ।
चरणपङ्कजं शन्तमं च ते रमण न: स्तनेष्वर्पयाधिहन् ॥१३॥
प्रणत-काम-दम्
to those who bow at (the feet) desires giver
पद्मजा-अर्चितम्
by Brahmaa worshipped
धरणि-मण्डनम्
the earth's ornaments
ध्येयम्-आपदि
must be meditated upon in difficult times
चरण-पङ्कजम्
feet lotus
शन्तमम् च ते
delighting and Your
रमण न: स्तनेषु-
O Beloved! On our bosom
अर्पय-आधि-हन्
place, the agony reliever
Your lotus feet are the desire granter to those who bow low to them, they are worshipped by the lotus born Brahmaa, they adorn the earth, they must be meditated upon in times of difficulty, they are delight giving and are reliever of agony. O Beloved! Do place them on our bosom.
सुरतवर्धनं शोकनाशनं स्वरितवेणुना सुष्ठु चुम्बितम् ।
इतररागविस्मारणं नृणां वितर वीर नस्तेऽधरामृतम् ॥१४॥
सुरत-वर्धनम्
of meeting desire enhancing
शोक-नाशनम्
sorrows destroying
स्वरित-वेणुना
when played upon, by the flute
सुष्ठु चुम्बितम्
well kissed
इतर-राग-
of this world the attachments
विस्मारणम् नृणाम्
made to be forgotten of the people
वितर वीर न:-
give O Gallant Lord! To us
ते-अधर-अमृतम्
Your lips' nectar
O Gallant Lord! Do give to us the nectar of Your lips, which enhance the desire of meeting You, destroy the sorrows, by which the flute is well kissed, when played upon, which makes the people forget their worldly attachments.
अटति यद् भवानह्नि काननं त्रुटिर्युगायते त्वामपश्यताम् ।
कुटिलकुन्तलं श्रीमुखं च ते जड उदीक्षतां पक्ष्मकृद् दृशाम् ॥१५॥
अटति यद् भवान्-
tread when You
अह्नि काननम्
in the day in the forest,
त्रुटि:-युगायते
a moment becomes an age
त्वाम्-अपश्यताम्
You not getting to see
कुटिल-कुन्तलम्
with curly locks
श्री-मुखम् च ते
beautiful face and Yours
जड उदीक्षताम्
the dumb (Brahmaa) of those who see
पक्ष्म-कृत् दृशाम्
wink made of the eyes
In the day, when You tread in the forest, not getting to see You, Your beautiful face with curly locks of hair, one moment becomes an age. Moreover, the dumb Brahmaa has created a wink with the eyes of the onlookers, (which hampers the sight in seeing You).
पतिसुतान्वयभ्रातृबान्धवानतिविलङ्घ्य तेऽन्त्यच्युतागता: ।
गतिविदस्तवोद्गीतमोहिता: कितव योषित: कस्त्यजेन्निशि ॥१६।
पति-सुत-अन्वय-
husband, son, family,
भ्रातृ-बान्धवान्-
brothers, friends,
अतिविलङ्घ्य ते
completely neglecting, Your
अन्ति-अच्युत-आगता:
near, O Immortal Lord! Have come
गति-विद:-तव-
the notes following of Your
उद्गीत-मोहिता:
played, enchanted by
कितव योषित:
O Trickster! Women
क:-त्यजेत्-निशि
which man abandons in the night
O Immortal Lord! We have come in Your presence completely neglecting our husbands, sons, family, brothers and kinsmen. As we recognize the notes that You play on the flute, enchanted by them, we followed them here. O Trickster! Which man would abandon the helpless women in the thick of the night?
रहसि संविदं हृच्छयोदयं प्रहसिताननं प्रेमवीक्षणम् ।
बृहदुर: श्रियो वीक्ष्य धाम ते मुहुरतिस्पृहा मुह्यते मन: ॥१७॥
रहसि संविदम्
in secret the amorous advances
हृच्छय-उदयम्
in the heart love enkindling
प्रहसित-आननम्
the smiling face,
प्रेम-वीक्षणम्
the loving glances,
बृहत्-उर: श्रियो
the broad chest, of Laxmi (the abode)
वीक्ष्य धाम ते
looking at, the abode, Your
मुहु:-अति-स्पृहा
again and again much longing
मुह्यते मन:
enchants our minds
Your amorous advances made in secret, enkindle the love in the hearts, Your smiling face, and loving glances, Your broad chest the abode of Laxmi, looking at which, our minds are enchanted again and again by intense longing.
व्रजवनौकसां व्यक्तिरङ्ग ते वृजिनहन्त्र्यलं विश्वमङ्गलम् ।
त्यज मनाक् च नस्त्वत्स्पृहात्मनां स्वजनहृद्रुजां यन्निषूदनम् ॥१८॥
व्रज-वनौकसाम्
of Vraja, of the forest dwellers,
व्यक्ति:-अङ्ग ते
descent, O Dear One! Yours
वृजिन-हन्त्री-अलम्
sorrows destroyer, certainly,
विश्व-मङ्गलम्
for the world is auspicious,
त्यज मनाक् च न:-
do give, a little, (of that) and to us,
त्वत्-स्पृहा-आत्मनाम्
You longing for the selves
स्व-जन-हृत्-रुजाम्
of own people heart's ailment
यत्-निषूदनम्
which relieves
O Dear One! Your descent, is the destroyer of the sorrows of Vraja, and of the forest dwellers, and is certainly auspicious for the whole world. Do give to us, for ourselves, Your own people, a little of that medicine which may relieve their hearts' ailment, the pangs of longing for You.
यत्ते सुजातचरणाम्बुरुहं स्तनेषु भीता: शनै: प्रिय दधीमहि कर्कशेषु ।
तेनाटवीमटसि तद् व्यथते न किंस्वित् कूर्पादिभिर्भ्रमति धीर्भवदायुषां न: ॥१९॥
यत्-ते सुजात
that, Your tender
चरण-अम्बुरुहम्
feet lotus
स्तनेषु भीता: शनै:
on bosom timidly, gently
प्रिय-दधीमहि कर्कशेषु
O Dear! Have placed, the hard
तेन-अटवीम्-अटसि
by them the forest (You) tread
तत् व्यथते न
that pains not
किंस्वित् कूर्प-आदिभि:-
a little, by pebbles and other
भ्रमति धी:-
puzzles the minds
भवत्-आयुषाम् न:
You the life ours
O Dear! Those lotus like tender feet of Yours which we very timidly and gently place on our hard bosom, for fear of giving pain to them, with those feet You tread the forest, full of pebbles thorns etc, which must be giving pain to You, the thought puzzles our minds, as You are our life.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे रास क्रीडायां गोपीगीतं नाम एकत्रिश: अध्याय: ॥३१॥
Thus ends the thirty-first discourse entitled 'The Gopis' song', (at The Lord's disappearance) during the Raasa-Play,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
