श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
स्तुवतस्तस्य भगवान् दर्शयित्वा जले वपु: ।

भूय: समाहरत् कृष्णो नटो नाट्यमिवात्मन: ॥१॥


स्तुवत:-तस्य भगवान्
on extolling his, The Lord,
दर्शयित्वा जले वपु:
having revealed in the water, the form,
भूय: समाहरत् कृष्ण:
again withdrew Krishna,
नट: नाट्यम्-इव-आत्मन:
actor, in a drama like own self

Even as Akroora was extolling Him, The Lord, Krishna, having revealed His form in the water, withdrew it again, just like an actor withdraws himself in the drama.


सोऽपि चान्तर्हितं वीक्ष्य जलादुन्मज्ज्य सत्वर: ।

कृत्वा चावश्यकं सर्वं विस्मितो रथमागमत् ॥२॥


स:-अपि च-अन्तर्हितम् वीक्ष्य
he also and disappeared perceiving
जलात्-उन्मज्ज्य सत्वर:
from the water coming out hastily
कृत्वा च-आवश्यकम् सर्वम्
did and the necessary all
विस्मित: रथम्-आगमत्
amazed, to the chariot returned

He, Akroora, perceiving the vision disappeared, came out of the water and hastily finished all the required deeds, and amazed, returned to the chariot.


तमपृच्छत्-हृषीकेश: किं ते दृष्टमिवाद्भुतम् ।

भूमौ वियति तोये वा तथा त्वां लक्षयामहे ॥३॥


तम्-अपृच्छत्-हृषीकेश:
him asked, Hrishikesha (The Ruler of the senses)
किम् ते दृष्टम्-इव-अद्भुतम्
what by you was seen like strange
भूमौ वियति तोये वा
on the earth, in the sky, in the water or,
तथा त्वां लक्षयामहे
like that you we see (perplexed)

Hrishikesha (The Ruler of the senses), Shree Krishna, asked him, 'What strange did you see on the earth, in the sky, or in the water'? We see that you are perplexed.'


अक्रूर उवाच -
Akroora said -
अद्भुतानीह यावन्ति भूमौ वियति वा जले ।

त्वयि विश्वात्मके तानि किं मेऽदृष्टं विपश्यत: ॥४॥


अद्भुतानि-इह यावन्ति
the wonders, here, all those,
भूमौ वियति वा जले
on the earth, in the sky, or in the water
त्वयि विश्व-आत्मके तानि
in You, O The Universal Soul! Them,
किम् मे-अदृष्टम् विपश्यत:
what by me was not seen, on seeing (You)

O Soul of the universe! All the wonders that there are on the earth, in the sky, or in the water, what is not seen by me, when I see You?


यत्राद्भुतानि सर्वाणि भूमौ वियति वा जले ।

तं त्वानुपश्यतो ब्रह्मन् किं मे दृष्टमिहाद्भुतम् ॥५॥


यत्र-अद्भुतानि सर्वाणि
where, the wonders, all,
भूमौ वियति वा जले
on the earth, in the sky, or in the water,
तम् त्वा-अनुपश्यत: ब्रह्मन्
that, You on perceiving, O Brahman!
किम् मे दृष्टम्-इह-अद्भुतम्
What to me is (to be) seen here, strange

O Brahman! On perceiving You, here, what all strange remains to be seen by me on the earth, in the sky or in the water?


इत्युक्त्वा चोदयामास स्यन्दनं गान्दिनीसुत: ।

मथुरामनयद् रामं कृष्णं चैव दिनात्यये ॥६॥


इति-उक्त्वा चोदयामास
thus saying drove
स्यन्दनम् गान्दिनी-सुत:
the chariot, Gaandini's son, (Akroora)
मथुराम्-अनयद् रामम् कृष्णम्
to Mathura took Balaraama Krishna
च-एव दिन-अत्यये
and also at the day's end

Thus saying, Gaandini's son Akroora, drove the chariot and brought Balaraama and Krishna to Mathura, at the end of the day.


मार्गे ग्रामजना राजंस्तत्र तत्रोपसंगता: ।

वसुदेवसुतौ वीक्ष्य प्रीता दृष्टिं न चाददु: ॥७॥


मार्गे ग्राम-जना: राजन्-
on the way, the country people, O King!
तत्र तत्र-उपसंगता:
here and there gathered,
वसुदेव-सुतौ वीक्ष्य प्रीता:
Vasudeva's Sons (two) seeing, delighted
दृष्टिम् न च-आददु:
sight did not and withdrew

O King! The people from the country, who had gathered here and there on the path, having seen the two Sons of Vasudeva, could not take off their eyes from them.


तावत् व्रजौकसस्तत्र नन्दगोपादयोऽग्रत: ।

पुरोपवनमासाद्य प्रतीक्षन्तोऽवतस्थिरे ॥८॥


तावत् व्रजौकस:-तत्र
till then, the Vraja people, there,
नन्द-गोप-आदय:-अग्रत:
Nand Gopa and others, from before
पुर-उपवनम्-आसाद्य
to the city's garden reached,
प्रतीक्षन्त:-अवतस्थिरे
were waiting stood

Meanwhile, there, the people of Vraja, Nanda Gopa and others, had reached the garden of the city and stood waiting there for Balaraama and Krishna.


तान् समेत्याह भगवानक्रूरं जगदीश्वर: ।

गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिं प्रश्रितं प्रहसन्निव ॥९॥


तान् समेत्य-आह भगवान्-
them having reached, said, The Lord
अक्रूरम् जगदीश्वर:
to Akroora, The Ruler of the universe,
गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिम्
holding in hand the (his) hand,
प्रश्रितम् प्रहसन्-इव
humbly, laughing as if

Having joined them, Shri Krishna, The Ruler of the universe, held in His own hands, the hand of the humble Akroora, and as if laughing, said to him,….


भवान् प्रविशतामग्रे सहयान: पुरीं गृहम् ।

वयं त्विहावमुच्याथ ततो द्रक्ष्यामहे पुरीम् ॥१०॥


भवान् प्रविशताम्-अग्रे
'You enter in advance, in advance,
सह-यान: पुरीम् गृहम्
with the chariot, the city, the house,
वयम् तु-इह-अवमुच्य-अथ
we, indeed, here will alight, then,
तत: द्रक्ष्यामहे पुरीम्
afterwards will see the city'

'You enter the city in advance and go home with the chariot. We will alight here, and then after that we will go and see the city.'


अक्रूर उवाच -
Akroora said -
नाहं भवद्भ्यां रहित: प्रवेक्ष्ये मथुरां प्रभो ।

त्यक्तुं नार्हसि मां नाथ भक्तं ते भक्तवत्सल ॥११॥


न-अहम् भवद्भ्याम् रहित:
not I, of You both bereft,
प्रवेक्ष्ये मथुराम् प्रभो
will enter Mathuraa, O Lord!
त्यक्तुम् न-अर्हसि माम् नाथ
to abandon, are not worthy, me, O Master!
भक्तम् ते भक्तवत्सल
devotee Yours, of the devotees, fond of

I will not enter Mathura bereft of You both. O Lord it is not worthy of You to abandon me, Your devotee, O Master, as You are Fond of Your devotees.


आगच्छ याम गेहान् न: सनाथान् कुर्वधोक्षज ।

सहाग्रज: सगोपालै: सुहृद्भिश्च सुहृत्तम ॥१२॥


आगच्छ याम गेहान् न:
come, let us go to houses ours
सनाथान् कुरु-अधोक्षज
with masters render, O Lord of the senses!
सह-अग्रज: स-गोपालै:
with (Your) elder brother, with the Gopalas,
सुहृद्भि:-च सुहृत्तम
with the friends and O best Friend!

Come, let us go, to our houses. Do render our houses with masters. O Lord of the senses! O best Friend! Come along with Your elder brother Balaraama, the Gopalas, and Your near and dear ones.


पुनीहि पादरजसा गृहान् नो गृहमेधिनाम् ।

यच्छौचेनानुतृप्यन्ति पितर: साग्नय: सुरा: ॥१३॥


पुनीहि पाद-रजसा
sanctify by feet dust
गृहान् न: गृहमेधिनाम्
houses ours, of the householders
यत्-शौचेन-अनुतृप्यन्ति
by which the water (washing Your feet), are propitiated,
पितर: स-अग्नय: सुरा:
the manes, along with the fires, and the gods

Do sanctify our, the householders, the houses. By the water, with which Your feet are washed, in our house, the manes, along with the fires and the gods will be propitiated.


अवनिज्याङ्घ्रियुगलमासीच्छलोक्यो बलिर्महान् ।

ऐश्वर्यमतुलं लेभे गतिं चैकान्तिनां तु या ॥१४॥


अवनिज्य-अङ्घ्रि-युगलम्-
having washed feet pair,
आसीत्-श्लोक्य: बलि:-महान्
became renowned Bali the great
ऐश्वर्यम्-अतुलम् लेभे
affluence incomparable, achieved,
गतिम् च-एकान्तिनाम् तु या
goal and by the solely devoted to You, indeed, that

Bali, the great, having washed Your two feet achieved sacred renown and incomparable affluence, and also the goal that is attained by those solely devoted to You.


आपस्तेऽङ्घ्र्यवनेजन्यस्त्रीँल्लोकाञ्छुचयोऽपुनन् ।

शिरसाधत्त या: शर्व: स्वर्याता: सगरात्मजा: ॥१५॥


आप:-ते-अङ्घ्रि-अवनेजन्य:-
the water of Your feet washed and flowed
त्रीन्-लोकान्-शुचय:-अपुनन्
the three worlds sanctifying and purifying
शिरसा-आधत्त या: शर्व:
on the head held which Shiva, (and)
स्व:-याता: सगर-आत्मजा:
to heaven went Sagara's sons

The water which washed Your feet, and flowed in the form of Gangaa, sanctified and purified the three worlds, which was held by Shiva on the head, and by the touch of which the sons of Sagara ascended to heaven.


देव देव जगन्नाथ पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तन ।

यदूत्तमोत्तमश्लोक नारायण नमोऽस्तु ते ॥१६॥


देव देव जगन्नाथ
O Lord! Praised by gods, of the universe the Master
पुण्य-श्रवण-कीर्तन
auspicious to be heard of and sung of,
यत्-उत्तम-उत्तम-श्लोक
of the Yadu's the scion, of excellent renown,
नारायण नम:-अस्तु ते
Naaraayana, salutations be to You

Salutations be to You, O Lord! Praised by the gods, the Master of the universe, auspicious to be heard of and to be sung of, O Scion of the Yadus, of excellent renown, Naaraayana.


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
आयास्ये भवतो गेहमहमार्यसमन्वित: ।

यदुचक्रद्रुहं हत्वा वितरिष्ये सुहृत्प्रियम् ॥१७॥


आयास्ये भवत: गेहम्-
will come to your house
अहम्-आर्य-समन्वित:
I, by elder brother accompanied
यदु-चक्र-द्रुहम् हत्वा
Yadu race's enemy having killed,
वितरिष्ये सुहृत्-प्रियम्
will bring to the dear ones delight

Accompanied by My elder brother, I will come to your house, after having killed the enemy of the Yadu race, and will bring delight to My dear ones.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवमुक्तो भगवता सोऽक्रूरो विमना इव ।

पुरीं प्रविष्ट: कंसाय कर्मावेद्य गृहं ययौ ॥१८॥


एवम्-उक्त: भगवता
thus told by The Lord,
स:-अक्रूर: विमना इव
he, Akroora, unhappily like,
पुरीम् प्रविष्ट: कंसाय
the city entered, to Kansa
कर्म-आवेद्य गृहम् ययौ
his work reported, to home went

He, Akroora, thus spoken to by The Lord, unhappily like, entered the city and reported of his work to Kansa, and went home.


अथापराह्णे भगवान् कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षणान्वित: ।

मथुरां प्राविशद् गोपैर्दिदृक्षु: परिवारित: ॥१९॥


अथा-अपराह्णे भगवान्
then, in the afternoon, Lord
कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षण-अन्वित:
Shree Krishna, Sankarshana (Balaraama) along with
मथुराम् प्राविशद्
in Mathuraa entered,
गोपै:-दिदृक्षु: परिवारित:
with the cowherds, eager to see surrounded by

Then, in the afternoon, accompanied by Balaraama, Shri Krishna, eager to see the city, entered Mathuraa, surrounded by the other cowherds.


ददर्श तां स्फाटिकतुङ्गगोपुरद्वारां बृहत्-हेमकपाटतोरणाम् ।

ताम्रारकोष्ठां परिखादुरासदामुद्यानरम्योपवनोपशोभिताम् ॥२०॥


ददर्श ताम् स्फाटिक-तुङ्ग-
saw that (city) with crystal (made) high
गोपुर-द्वाराम् बृहत्-हेम
gateways and doors, big golden
कपाट-तोरणाम्
gates, and arches,
ताम्र-अर-कोष्ठाम्
of copper and brass granaries,
परिखा-दुरासदाम्-उद्यान-
by moats difficult to access, with gardens
रम्य-उपवन- उपशोभिताम्
pleasant and parks adorned with

They saw the city with its high gateways and doors made of crystal, big golden gates and arches, granaries of copper and brass, surrounded by moats, difficult to access, and adorned with pleasant gardens and delightful parks.


सौवर्णशृङ्गाटकहर्म्यनिष्कुटै: श्रेणीसभाभिर्भवनैरुपस्कृताम् ।

वैदूर्यवज्रामलनीलविद्रुमैर्मुक्ताहरिद्भिर्वलभीषु वेदिषु ॥२१॥


सौवर्ण-शृङ्ग-अटक-हर्म्य-
golden lofty summit, shed mansions,
निष्कुटै: श्रेणी-सभाभि:-
pleasure groves, by particular meetings
भवनै:-उपस्कृताम्
halls graced
वैदूर्य-वज्र-अमल-
by coral gems pure
नील-विद्रुमै:-मुक्ता-
blue sapphires, pearls
हरिद्भि:-वलभीषु वेदिषु
emeralds, slanting roofs

The city was graced by golden lofty summits with sheds, golden mansions, pleasure groves, halls for particular trade meetings, with slanting roofs made of pure coral gems, blue sapphire, pearls and emeralds.


जुष्टेषु जालामुखरन्ध्रकुट्टिमेष्वाविष्टपारावतबर्हिनादिताम् ।

संसिक्तरथ्यापणमार्गचत्वरां प्रकीर्णमाल्याङ्कुरलाजतण्डुलाम् ॥२२॥


जुष्टेषु जालामुखरन्ध्र-
in the beautiful windows with holes screens,
कुट्टिमेषु-आविष्ट-पारावत-
on the floors, perched pigeons,
बर्हि-नादिताम्
and peacocks resounding
संसिक्त-रथ्या-आपण-मार्ग-
sprinkled roads, market ways
चत्वराम् प्रकीर्ण-माल्य-
and cross roads, strewn with garlands,
अङ्कुर-लाज-तण्डुलाम्
sprouts, parched paddy, and rice

The beautiful windows with screens had holes, and on the floors, were perched pigeons and peacocks, who resounded the place with their noise. The roads, market place and the cross roads were sprinkled with water and strewn with garlands, sprouts, parched paddy and rice.


आपूर्णकुम्भैर्दधिचन्दनोक्षितै: प्रसूनदीपावलिभि: सपल्लवै: ।

सवृन्दरम्भाक्रमुकै: सकेतुभि: स्वलङ्कृतद्वारगृहां सपट्टिकै: ॥२३॥


आपूर्ण-कुम्भै:-दधि-
with full pitchers with curd,
चन्दन-उक्षितै: प्रसून-
sandal paste sprinkled, flowers,
दीपावलिभि: सपल्लवै:
and rows of lamps with leaves,
सवृन्द-रम्भा-क्रमुकै:
with fruits, bananas, beatlenuts
सकेतुभि: सु-अलङ्कृत-
with flags well adorned
द्वार-गृहाम् सपट्टिकै:
doors the houses with cloth (curtains)

The houses were well adorned with pitchers full of water, sprinkled with curd and sandal paste, rows of lamps were arranged, with flowers and leaves, and fruits, bananas, beetle nuts, etc., and the doors had cloth curtains.


तां सम्प्रविष्टौ वसुदेवनन्दनौ वृतौ वयस्यैर्नरदेववर्त्मना ।

द्रष्टुं समीयुस्त्वरिता: पुरस्त्रियो हर्म्याणि चैवारुरुहुर्नृपोत्सुका: ॥२४॥


ताम् सम्प्रविष्टौ
that, (city) entering
वसुदेव-नन्दनौ वृतौ
Vasudeva's two Sons, surrounded
वयस्यै:-नरदेव-वर्त्मना
by companions, by the royal path
द्रष्टुम् समीयु:-त्वरिता:
to see gathered, hastily
पुर-स्त्रिय: हर्म्याणि च-एव-
the city's women, the mansions and also
आरुरुहु:-नृप-उत्सुका:
climbed up, O King! Eagerly

The two Sons of Vasudeva, surrounded by Their companions entered the city by the royal path. O King! the city's women hastily gathered and climbed the mansions eager to have a look.


काश्चिद् विपर्यग्धृतवस्त्रभूषणा विस्मृत्य चैकं युगलेष्वथापरा: ।

कृतैकपत्रश्रवणैकनूपुरा नाङ्क्त्वा द्वितीयं त्वपराश्च लोचनम् ॥२५॥


काश्चिद् विपर्यक्-धृत-
some wrong wearing
वस्त्र-भूषणा विस्मृत्य
clothes and ornaments, forgetting
च-एकम् युगलेषु-अथ-अपरा:
and one, from the pair and other one
कृत-एक-पत्र-श्रवण-एक-नूपुरा
wore one ear-ring in the ear, one anklet,
न-अङ्क्त्वा द्वितीयम् तु-
did not apply collyrium in the other indeed
अपरा:-च लोचनम्
another one in the eye

Some of the women, in their haste, wore wrong clothes and ornaments. One wore only one ear-ring of a pair, in the ear, another one wore only one anklet, and another one forgot to apply collyrium in the second eye.


अश्नन्त्य एकास्तदपास्य सोत्सवा अभ्यज्यमाना अकृतोपमज्जना: ।

स्वपन्त्य उत्थाय निशम्य नि:स्वनं प्रपाययन्त्योऽर्भमपोह्य मातर: ॥२६॥


अश्नन्त्य: एका:-तत्-अपास्य
eating one, that leaving,
स-उत्सवा: अभ्यज्यमाना:
with enthusiasm, applying oil,
अकृत-उपमज्जना:
not taking bath,
स्वपन्त्य उत्थाय निशम्य
sleeping woke up hearing
नि:स्वनम् प्रपाययन्त्य:-
the commotion, sucking the breast
अर्भम्-अपोह्य मातर:
to the child , leaving, the mothers

One woman who was eating, left it, and went away full of joy. Another one was applying oil, she went away without taking a bath. Another one was sleeping, she ran on hearing the commotion. The mothers who were suckling the children, went leaving them behind.


मनांसि तासामरविन्दलोचन: प्रगल्भलीलाहसितावलोकनै: ।

जहार मत्तद्विरदेन्द्रविक्रमो दृशां ददच्छ्रीरमणात्मनोत्सवम् ॥२७॥


मनांसि तासाम्-अरविन्द-
minds, theirs', The Lotus-
लोचन: प्रगल्भ-लीला-
eyed (Krishna), with fearless sporting
हसित-अवलोकनै:
laughter and glances
जहार मत्त-द्विरद-इन्द्र
captured, intoxicated lordly elephant (like)
विक्रम: दृशाम् ददत्-
gait, to their eyes giving,
श्रीरमण-आत्मना-उत्सवम्
to Shree delighting, by own personality, festival

The Lotus-eyed Krishna captured their minds with His fearless sporting smiles and glances. With a gait like that of an intoxicated lordly elephant, He, The Delight of Shree, with His personality, gave a festival to the eyes of the women.


दृष्ट्वा मुहु:श्रुतमनुद्रुतचेतसस्तं तत्प्रेक्षणोत्स्मितसुधोक्षणलब्धमाना: ।

आनन्दमूर्तिमुपगुह्य दृशाऽऽत्मलब्धं हृष्यत्त्वचो जहुरनन्तमरिन्दमाधिम् ॥२८॥


दृष्ट्वा मुहु:-श्रुतम्-
on seeing (Him) The most heard of
अनुद्रुत-चेतस:-तम्
with galloping minds, Him,
तत्-प्रेक्षण-उत्-स्मित
by His glances and lovely smiles,
सुधा-उक्षण-लब्ध-माना:
nectar sprinkled, having received honour,
आनन्द-मूर्तिम्-उपगुह्य दृशा-
The Bliss Personified, embracing by the eyes,
आत्म-लब्धम् हृष्यत्-त्वच:
in their minds ushered, with horripilated skin
जहु:-अनन्तम्-
abandoned the boundless
अरिन्दम्-आधिम्
O enemy of the foe! Agony

O Enemy of the foes! Pareekshit! On seeing Him, of Whom they had often heard, their minds galloped after Him. They received honour as they were sprinkled by the nectar of His glances and beautiful smiles. They embraced The Blissful Personality by their eyes. By ushering Him in their minds, they were full of joy and their skin was full of horripilation, and they abandoned their boundless agony of separation from Him.


प्रासादशिखरारूढा: प्रीत्युत्फुल्लमुखाम्बुजा: ।

अभ्यवर्षन् सौमनस्यै: प्रमदा बलकेशवौ ॥२९॥


प्रासाद-शिखर-आरूढा:
of the mansions' roof tops getting up
प्रीति-उत्फुल्ल-मुख-अम्बुजा:
by with affection blooming face lotuses
अभ्यवर्षन् सौमनस्यै:
showered (Them) with flowers,
प्रमदा बल-केशवौ
the ladies on Balaraama and Keshava

The ladies got on the roof tops of the mansions, with their lotus faces blooming with affection, they showered flowers on Both of Them, Balaraama and Keshava.


दध्यक्षतै: सोदपात्रै: स्रग्गन्धैरभ्युपायनै: ।

तावानर्चु: प्रमुदितास्तत्र तत्र द्विजातय: ॥३०॥


दधि-अक्षतै: स-उद-पात्रै:
with curd and rice, with water full vessels,
स्रक्-गन्धै:-अभ्युपायनै:
garlands and incenses, and with gift articles,
तौ-अनर्चु: प्रमुदिता:
Them Both worshipped, with delight
तत्र तत्र द्विजातय:
here and there, the Braahmanas

Here and there, the Braahmanas worshipped Both of Them, with curd and rice, vessels full of water, garlands and incenses, and gift articles.


ऊचु: पौरा अहो गोप्यस्तप: किमचरन् महत् ।

या ह्येतावनुपश्यन्ति नरलोकमहोत्सवौ ॥३१॥


ऊचु: पौरा: अहो गोप्य:-
said the citizens, 'O Gopis!
तप: किम्-अचरन् महत्
Austerities which were done great
या: हि-एतौ-अनुपश्यन्ति
they in that, These Two keep seeing
नर-लोक-महोत्सवौ
the human worlds' delight

The citizens said, ' O Gopis! What great austerities were performed by you, in that you get to see Both of Them, the delights of the worlds?'


रजकं कञ्जिदायान्तं रङ्गकारं गदाग्रज: ।

दृष्ट्वायाचत वासांसि धौतान्यत्युत्तमानि च ॥३२॥


रजकम् कञ्जित्-आयान्तम्
washer man, one, coming,
रङ्गकारम् गदाग्रज:
a dyer, Gada's Elder Brother (Krishna)
दृष्ट्वा-अयाचत वासांसि
seeing asked for clothes,
धौतानि-अति-उत्तमानि च
washed, the very best ones and

The Elder Brother of Gada, Shree Krishna, seeing a washer man, also a dyer coming, asked him for the very best and well washed clothes.


देह्यावयो: समुचितान्यङ्ग वासांसि चार्हतो: ।

भविष्यति परं श्रेयो दातुस्ते नात्र संशय: ॥३३॥


देहि-आवयो: समुचितानि-
'Give to us both suitable,
अङ्ग वासांसि च-अर्हतो:
O Dear! clothes, and worthy
भविष्यति परम् श्रेय:
will be of high benefit,
दातु:-ते न-अत्र संशय:
to the giver you, not here is a doubt'

'O Dear! Give us both suitable clothes as we are worthy of that. To the giver you there will be great benefit, there is no doubt about that.'


स याचितो भगवता परिपूर्णेन सर्वत: ।

साक्षेपं रुषित: प्राह भृत्यो राज्ञ: सुदुर्मद: ॥३४॥


स: याचित: भगवता
he, asked for by The Lord
परिपूर्णेन सर्वत:
well fulfilled from everywhere,
साक्षेपम् रुषित: प्राह
with taunt angrily said
भृत्य: राज्ञ: सुदुर्मद:
the servant of the king full of false arrogance

The servant of the king, Kansa, full of false arrogance, when thus asked by The Lord, Who himself is fulfilled in every way, tauntingly and in anger said .


ईदृशान्येव वासांसि नित्यं गिरिवनेचरा: ।

परिधत्त किमुद्वृत्ता राजद्रव्याण्यभीप्सथ ॥३५॥


ईदृशानि-एव वासांसि
such only clothes
नित्यम् गिरि-वने-चरा:
always on mountains and in the forest roaming
परिधत्त किम्-उद्वृत्ता:
wear, what crossing all boundaries,
राज-द्रव्याणि-अभीप्सथ
royal goods desire for (both)

'You people, who roam on the mountains and in the forests, do you always wear such clothes? That, crossing all boundries of propriety, you desire for royal goods?'


याताशु बालिशा मैवं प्रार्थ्यं यदि जिजीविषा ।

बध्नन्ति घ्नन्ति लुम्पन्ति दृप्तं राजकुलानि वै ॥३६॥


यात-आशु बालिशा: मा-एवम्
'go away soon, O Stupid Ones! do not such
प्रार्थ्यम् यदि जिजीविषा
requests make, if you wish to survive
बध्नन्ति घ्नन्ति लुम्पन्ति
will bind, kill, or strip,
दृप्तम् राज कुलानि वै
the insolent, the king's men indeed'

'O Stupid Ones go away soon, and do not make such requests if you wish to survive. The king's men will certainly put in bondage, will kill, or strip the insolent.


एवं विकत्थमानस्य कुपितो देवकीसुत: ।

रजकस्य कराग्रेण शिर: कायादपातयत् ॥३७॥


एवम् विकत्थमानस्य
in this manner, him bragging,
कुपित: देवकी-सुत:
enraged Devaki's son,
रजकस्य कर-अग्रेण
of the washer man, by the finger tips,
शिर: कायात्-अपातयत्
head from the body, made to fall

Devaki's son, Krishna was enraged at the washer man who was bragging in this manner, and He made his head fall from the body with the tips of His fingers.


तस्यानुजीविन: सर्वे वास: कोशान् विसृज्य वै ।

दुद्रुवु: सर्वतो मार्गं वासांसि जगृहेऽच्युत: ॥३८॥


तस्य-अनुजीविन: सर्वे
his co-workers, all,
वास: कोशान् विसृज्य वै
the clothes' bundles leaving, indeed,
दुद्रुवु: सर्वत: मार्गम्
fled in all the roads
वासांसि जगृहे-अच्युत:
the clothes took The Immortal Lord

All his co-workers fled in all the roads all around, leaving behind the bundles of clothes, and The Immortal Lord took them.


वसित्वाऽऽत्मप्रिये वस्त्रे कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षणस्तथा ।

शेषाण्यादत्त गोपेभ्यो विसृज्य भुवि कानिचित् ॥३९॥


वसित्वा-आत्म-प्रिये वस्त्रे
wearing self pleasing
कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षण:-तथा
Krishna, Balaraama and,
शेषाणि-आदत्त गोपेभ्य:
the remaining gave to the Gopas,
विसृज्य भुवि कानिचित्
leaving on the ground some

Krishna and Balaraama wore the clothes which They liked and gave the rest to the Gopas, and left some of them strewn on the ground.


ततस्तु वायक: प्रीतस्तयोर्वेषमकल्पयत् ।

विचित्रवर्णैश्चैलेयैराकल्पैरनुरूपत: ॥४०॥


तत:-तु वायक: प्रीत:-
then, indeed, a weaver with delight
तयो:-वेषम्-अकल्पयत्
Their form adorned
विचित्र-वर्णै:-चैलेयै:-
with different coloured beautiful
आकल्पै:-अनुरूपत:
designs, befitting

Then, indeed, a weaver with delight adorned Their forms with different coloured beautiful designs, befitting Them.


नानालक्षण वेषाभ्यां कृष्णरामौ विरेजतु: ।

स्वलङ्कृतौ बालगजौ पर्वणीव सितेतरौ ॥४१॥


नाना-लक्षण वेषाभ्याम्
by various decorations bedecked,
कृष्ण-रामौ विरेजतु:
Krishna and Balaraama shone
स्वलङ्कृतौ बाल-गजौ
well adorned young elephants
पर्वणि-इव सित-इतरौ
for festival like, white and (the other) dark

Krishna and Balaraama, shone with Their various decorations, well adorned for the festival, like white and dark young elephants.


तस्य प्रसन्नौ भगवान् प्रादात् सारूप्यमात्मन: ।

श्रियं च परमां लोके बलैश्वर्यस्मृतीन्द्रियम् ॥४२॥


तस्य प्रसन्नौ भगवान्
on him pleased (They both) The Lord
प्रादात् सारूप्यम्-आत्मन:
gave similarity of form with Himself
श्रियम् च परमाम् लोके
prosperity and great, in the world
बल-ऐश्वर्य स्मृति-इन्द्रियम्
strength authority memory and (acuteness of) senses

They both were pleased with him, the weaver. The Lord gave him similarity with His own form, great prosperity, acuteness of senses, memory and strength and authority in the world.


तत: सुदाम्नो भवनं मालाकारस्य जग्मतु: ।

तौ दृष्ट्वा स समुत्थाय ननाम शिरसा भुवि ॥४३॥


तत: सुदाम्न: भवनम्
then, to Sudaama's house
मालाकारस्य जग्मतु:
the garland maker's went
तौ दृष्ट्वा स: समुत्थाय
Them both seeing, he arose
ननाम शिरसा भुवि
bowed, with head (touching) the floor

After that, Both of Them went to the garland maker Sudaama's house. Seeing Them, he arose and bowed to Them with his head touching the floor.


तयोरासनमानीय पाद्यं चार्घ्यार्हणादिभि: ।

पूजां सानुगयोश्चक्रे स्रक्ताम्बूलानुलेपनै: ॥४४॥


तयो:-आसनम्-आनीय
for Them seat brought
च-अर्घ्य-अर्हण-आदिभि:
and water to wash feet and hands, and other
पूजाम् सानुगयो:-चक्रे
worship with the followers conducted,
स्रक्-ताम्बूल-अनुलेपनै:
with garlands, beetle nuts, sandal paste

He brought seats for Them, and water to wash the feet and hands. Then along with the followers, he conducted Their worship with garlands, beetle nuts, sandal paste and other articles.


प्राह न: सार्थकं जन्म पावितं च कुलं प्रभो ।

पितृदेवर्षयो मह्यं तुष्टा ह्यागमनेन वाम् ॥४५॥


प्राह न: सार्थकम् जन्म
said, 'Ours fruitful is birth
पावितम् च कुलम् प्रभो
hallowed and the race, O Lord!
पितृ-देव-ऋषय: मह्यम्
the manes, gods and sages, with me
तुष्टा: हि-आगमनेन वाम्
are satisfied indeed, by coming of You two

'O Lord! My birth is fruitful, my race is hallowed. The manes, gods and sages are satisfied with me, indeed, by the advent of You both.'


भवन्तौ किल विश्वस्य जगत: कारणं परम् ।

अवतीर्णाविहांशेन क्षेमाय च भवाय च ॥४६॥


भवन्तौ किल विश्वस्य
You both certainly of the whole
जगत: कारणम् परम्
universe are The Cause ultimate
अवतीणौ-इह-अंशेन
have descended here in parts
क्षेमाय च भवाय च
for protection and for growth and

Certainly You both are the ultimate Cause of this whole universe. You have descended here in part, for its protection and growth.


न हि वां विषमा दृष्टि: सुहृदोर्जगदात्मनो: ।

समयो: सर्वभूतेषु भजन्तं भजतोरपि ॥४७॥


न हि वाम् विषमा दृष्टि:
not indeed of You both is discriminating sight
सुहृदो:-जगत्-आत्मनो:
as (You) are of the universe the Self,
समयो: सर्व-भूतेषु
the same to all creatures
भजन्तम् भजतो:-अपि
to the worshipping, love also

Indeed, Both of You do not have a discriminating eye. As You are the very soul of all the creatures, and also You love those who worship You.


तावाज्ञापयतं भृत्यं किमहं करवाणि वाम् ।

पुंसोऽत्यनुग्रहो ह्येष भवद्भिर्यन्नियुज्यते ॥४८॥


तौ-आज्ञापयतम् भृत्यम्
You both do order the servant
किम्-अहम् करवाणि वाम्
what I may do for You both
पुंस:-अति-अनुग्रह: हि-एव
of the being great boon, indeed only
भवद्भि:-यत्-नियुज्यते
by You, in that, is engaged

'Do order this servant, what shall I do for You two? Indeed it is a great boon only, for a being that he is engaged in service to You.'


इत्यभिप्रेत्य राजेन्द्र सुदामा प्रीतमानस: ।

शस्तै: सुगन्धै: कुसुमैर्माला विरचिता ददौ ॥४९॥


इति-अभिप्रेत्य राजेन्द्र
thus, knowing, O King of kings!
सुदामा प्रीत-मानस:
Sudhaamaa, with delighted heart
शस्तै: सुगन्धै: कुसुमै:-
with excellent fragrant flowers
माला विरचिता ददौ
garlands made, gave

O King of kings! Sudhaamaa, thus knowing the wish of The Lord, with a delighted heart, gave them garlands made of excellent flowers of superb fragrance.


ताभि: स्वलङ्कृतौ प्रीतौ कृष्णरामौ सहानुगौ ।

प्रणताय प्रपन्नाय ददतुर्वरदौ वरान् ॥५०॥


ताभि: सु-अलङ्कृतौ प्रीतौ
with those well adorned, with delight,
कृष्ण-रामौ सह-अनुगौ
Krishna Balaraama with the followers
प्रणताय प्रपन्नाय
to the bent and seeking protection,
ददतु:-वरदौ वरान्
gave, The Boon Givers, boons

Krishna and Balaraama along with the followers were well adorned with those garlands. They The Boon Givers, gave boons to the florist who reverently bowed to Them, and sought Their protection.


सोऽपिवव्रेऽचलां भक्तिं तस्मिन्नेवाखिलात्मनि ।

तद्भक्तेषु च सौहर्दं भूतेषु च दयां पराम् ॥५१॥


स:-अपि-वव्रे-अचलाम् भक्तिम्
he also asked for unwavering devotion
तस्मिन्-एव-अखिल-आत्मनि
in Him only, of all The Soul
तत्-भक्तेषु च सौहर्दम्
in His devotees and companionship,
भूतेषु च दयाम् पराम्
in the beings and compassion supreme

He also asked for unwavering devotion in Him, Shree Krishna alone, The Soul of all beings, and companionship with His devotees and supreme compassion for all the beings.


इति तस्मै वरं दत्त्वा श्रियं चान्वयवर्धिनीम् ।

बलमायुर्यश: कान्तिं निर्जगाम सहाग्रज: ॥५२॥


इति तस्मै वरम् दत्त्वा
in this manner to him wishes granting,
श्रियम् च-अन्वय-वर्धिनीम्
prosperity and with posterity increasing,
बलम्-आयु:-यश: कान्तिम्
strength, longevity, fame, splendour,
निर्जगाम सह-अग्रज:
went away with elder brother

This this manner, Shree Krishna granted his wishes, and also gave him prosperity which would increase with posterity, strength, longevity, fame and splendour, and departed with His elder brother, Balaraama.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे पुरप्रवेशो नाम एकचत्वारिंश: अध्याय: ॥४१॥


Thus ends the forty-first discourse entitled "Entry (of Shree Krishna and Balaraama) into Mathuraa', in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
