श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
वृष्णीनां प्रवरो मन्त्री कृष्णस्य दयित: सखा ।

शिष्यो बृहस्पते: साक्षादुद्धवो बुद्धिसत्तम: ॥१॥


वृष्णीनाम् प्रवर: मन्त्री
of the Vrishnees the foremost counsellor
कृष्णस्य दयित: सखा
of Krishna, a dear friend,
शिष्य: बृहस्पते: साक्षात्-
pupil of Brihaspati himself,
उद्धव: बुद्धि-सत्तम:
Uddhava, intelligent highly

The foremost counsellor of Vrishnees, and also a dear friend of Krishna, the direct pupil of Brihaspati, Uddhava, was highly intelligent.


तमाह भगवान् प्रेष्ठं भक्तमेकान्तिनं क्वचित् ।

गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिं प्रपन्नार्तिहरो हरि: ॥२॥


तम्-आह भगवान् प्रेष्ठम्
to him said The Lord, the most dear
भक्तम्-एकान्तिनम् क्वचित्
devotee, singularly, once,
गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिम्
holding by hand (his) hand,
प्रपन्न-आर्ति-हर: हरि:
of the shelter seekers suffering remover, Shree Hari,

Once, The Lord, Shree Hari, Who is the remover of the agonies of those who seek Him, held the hand of His most dear singular devotee, Uddhava, in His own hand, and said to him,…


गच्छोद्धव व्रजं सौम्य पित्रोर्नौ प्रीतिमावह ।

गोपीनां मद्वियोगाधिं मत्सन्देशैर्विमोचय ॥३॥


गच्छ-उद्धव व्रजम् सौम्य
'go Uddhava! to Vraja, O Gentle One!
पित्रो:-नौ प्रीतिम्-आवह
to parents Ours delight give
गोपीनाम् मत्-वियोग-आधिम्
of the Gopis, by My separation suffering
मत्-सन्देशै:-विमोचय
by My messages relieve'

'O Gentle Uddhava! Go to Vraja and give delight to Our parents. And the Gopis, who are suffering because of separation from Me, relieve them with My messages.'


ता मन्मनस्का मत्प्राणा मदर्थे त्यक्तदैहिका: ।

मामेव दयितं प्रेष्ठमात्मानं मनसा गता: ।

ये त्यक्तलोकधर्माश्च मदर्थे तान् बिभर्म्यहम् ॥४॥


ता: मत्-मनस्का: मत्-प्राणा:
they, in Me, are minded, in Me are their lives,
मत्-अर्थे त्यक्त-दैहिका:
for My sake have renounced materials
माम्-एव दयितम् प्रेष्ठम्-
Me only The Beloved The Highest
आत्मानम् मनसा गता:
of their own (selves) mentally are given
ये त्यक्त-लोक-धर्मा:-च
who have given up the world and moral obligations
मत्-अर्थे तान् बिभर्म्यहम्
for My sake, them I nurture

They have given their minds to Me, I am their lives, for My sake they have renounced the physical world, I am their most beloved and they consider Me to be The Highest even than their own selves. For My sake, they have given themselves up to Me mentally, as well as the worldly and moral obligations. Them I nurture.


मयि ता: प्रेयसां प्रेष्ठे दूरस्थे गोकुलस्त्रिय: ।

स्मरन्त्योऽङ्ग विमुह्यन्ति विरहौत्कण्ठ्यविह्वला: ॥५॥


मयि ता: प्रेयसाम् प्रेष्ठे
in Me they, of the beloved, most Beloved,
दूर-स्थे गोकुल-स्त्रिय:
far living, Gokula women
स्मरन्त्य:-अङ्ग विमुह्यन्ति
remembering, O Dear! are forgetful
विरह-औत्कण्ठ्य-विह्वला:
by separation and longing overwhelmed

'O Dear Uddhava! In Me they find the most Beloved of all their beloveds'. The women of Gokula, being far away, remember Me and are forgetful of every thing else, and are overwhelmed by separation from Me, and longing for Me.'


धारन्त्यतिकृच्छ्रेण प्राय: प्राणान् कथञ्चन ।

प्रत्यागमनसन्देशैर्बल्लव्यो मे मदात्मिका: ॥६॥


धारन्ति-अति कृच्छ्रेण
holding on to with great difficulty
प्राय: प्राणान् कथञ्चन
almost the lives somehow
प्रत्यागमन-सन्देशै:-बल्लव्य:
by the returning messages, the Gopis
मे मत्-आत्मिका:
Mine, in Me absorbed minded

My Gopis, with their minds absorbed in Me, are somehow, with great difficulty holding on to their lives, with the message of assurance of My returning to Vraja.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्युक्त उद्धवो राजन् संदेशं भर्तुरादृत: ।

आदाय रथमारुह्य प्रययौ नन्दगोकुलम् ॥७॥


इति-उक्त: उद्धव: राजन्
thus told, Uddhava, O King!
संदेशम् भर्तु:-आदृत:
the message of The Master, respectfully
आदाय रथम्-आरुह्य
taking, the chariot mounted
प्रययौ नन्द-गोकुलम्
went to Nanda's Gokula

O King! Instructed thus, Uddhava took the message of his Master, with respect, and mounted the chariot and went to the Gokula of Nanda.


प्राप्तो नन्दव्रजं श्रीमान् निम्लोचति विभावसौ ।

छन्नयान: प्रविशतां पशूनां खुररेणुभि: ॥८॥


प्राप्त: नन्द-व्रजम् श्रीमान्
reached Nanda's Vraja, the blessed one,
निम्लोचति विभावसौ
as was setting the Sun,
छन्न-यान: प्रविशताम्
clouded the chariot (was) by the entering
पशूनाम् खुर-रेणुभि:
animals' hooves dust

The blessed one, reached Nanda's Vraja as the Sun was setting. His chariot was covered with the dust raised by the hoofs of the returning animals, as he entered Vraja.


वासितार्थेऽभियुध्यद्भिर्नादितं शुष्मिभिर्वृषै: ।

धावन्तीभिश्च वस्राभिरूधोभारै: स्ववत्सकान् ॥९॥


वासिता-अर्थे-अभियुध्यद्भि:-
the heated cows contending for
नादितम् शुष्मिभि:-वृषै:
resounding by the cries of bulls in the rut
धावन्तीभि:-च वस्राभि:-
by the rushing and by the just borne (calves)
ऊध:-भारै: स्व-वत्सकान्
(cows) with udders heavy, for their calves

The place resounded with the cries of the bulls in rut contending for the cows in heat. Also by the braying of the cows with heavy udders, rushing to their new born calves.


इतस्ततो विलङ्घद्भिर्गोवत्सैर्मण्डितं सितै: ।

गोदोहशब्दाभिरवं वेणूनां नि:स्वनेन च ॥१०॥


इत:-तत: विलङ्घद्भि:-
here and there hopping
गो-वत्सै:-मण्डितम् सितै:
by the cow's calves, graced with white,
गो-दोह-शब्दाभि:-रवम्
the cows' milking sounds, noise
वेणूनाम् नि:स्वनेन च
of the flutes soundings and

The place was noisy also by the cows' calves jumping here and there, by the sound of the cows being milked, and by the soundings of the flutes.


गायन्तीभिश्च कर्माणि शुभानि बलकृष्णयो: ।

स्वलङ्कृताभिर्गोपीभिर्गोपैश्च सुविराजितम् ॥११॥


गायन्तीभि:-च कर्माणि
by the singing and of the deeds
शुभानि बल-कृष्णयो:
noble, of Balaraama and Krishna,
सु-अलङ्कृताभि:-गोपीभि:-
by the well adorned Gopis
गोपै:-च सुविराजितम्
by the Gopas and it shone

Vraja shone with the well adorned Gopis and the Gopas singing of the noble deeds of Balaraama and Krishna.


अग्न्यर्कातिथिगोविप्रपितृदेवार्चनान्वितै: ॥

धूपदीपैश्च माल्यैश्च गोपावासैर्मनोरमम् ॥१२॥


अग्नि-अर्क-अतिथि-गो-विप्र-
fire, Sun, guest, cow, Braahmana,
पितृ-देव-अर्चन-अन्वितै:
manes, gods, worship, coupled with,
धूप-दीपै:-च माल्यै:-च
by incense, oil lamps and garlands and
गोप-आवासै: मनोरमम्
Gopas dwellings pleasing to the mind

The place was pleasing to the mind by the dwellings of the Gopas, where fire, Sun, guests, cows, Braahmanas, manes, gods, were worshipped, coupled with the lighting of incense, oil lamps and decorated with garlands.


सर्वत: पुष्पितवनं द्विजालिकुलनादितम् ।

हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णै: पद्मषण्डैश्च मण्डितम् ॥१३॥


सर्वत: पुष्पित-वनम्
all around flowering forests
द्विज-अलि-कुल-नादितम्
with birds, black bees humming
हंस-कारण्डव-आकीर्णै:
swan and ducks crowded
पद्म-षण्डै:-च मण्डितम्
lotus beds beautified

It had forests all around with blooming flowers, resounding with the chirpings of the birds and humming of the black bees, and beautified with swans and ducks crowding the lotus beds.


तमागतं समागम्य कृष्णस्यानुचरं प्रियम् ।

नन्द: प्रीत: परिष्वज्य वासुदेवधियार्चयत् ॥१४॥


तम्-आगतम् समागम्य
him, having come, meeting,
कृष्णस्य-अनुचरम् प्रियम्
Krishna's follower dear,
नन्द: प्रीत: परिष्वज्य
Nanda, delighted, embraced,
वासुदेव-धिया-अर्चयत्
Vaasudeva, mentally worshipped

Nanda was delighted on Krishna's beloved follower, Uddhava coming. He welcomed and embraced him, and worshipped him, understanding him to be Vaasudeva, Krishna Himself.


भोजितं परमान्नेन संविष्टं कशिपौ सुखम् ।

गतश्रमं पर्यपृच्छत् पादसंवाहनादिभि: ॥१५॥


भोजितम् परम-अन्नेन
fed with the best of foods
संविष्टम् कशिपौ सुखम्
well seated on the couch relaxed,
गत-श्रमम् पर्यपृच्छत्
relieved of fatigue, asked
पाद-संवाहन-आदिभि:
feet massaging and others

He was fed with the best of foods, and was well seated, relaxed on the couch. He was relieved of fatigue by his feet being massaged and by other services. Then Nanda asked him,…


कच्चिदङ्ग महाभाग सखा न: शूरनन्दन: ।

आस्ते कुशल्यपत्याद्यैर्युक्तो मुक्त: सुहृद्वृत: ॥१६॥


कच्चित्-अङ्ग महाभाग
'is it, O Dear! The highly blessed,
सखा न: शूर-नन्दन:
friend ours, of the Shoora's the delight
आस्ते कुशली-अपत्य-आद्यै:-युक्त:
is well, sons and others along with
मुक्त: सुहृत्-वृत:
released, with near and dear ones surrounded

'O Dear! Is our highly blessed friend, the delight of the Shoora's, Vasudeva, is well, along with his sons and kinsmen, and is with his near and dear ones, as he is now released from bondage.


दिष्ट्या कंसो हत: पाप: सानुग: स्वेन पाप्मना ।

साधूनां धर्मशीलानां यदूनां द्वेष्टि य: सदा ॥१७॥


दिष्ट्या कंस: हत: पाप:
fortunately Kansa is killed, the sinful,
स-अनुग: स्वेन पाप्मना
with followers, by his own sins
साधूनाम् धर्म-शीलाना
of the noble, righteousness inclined
यदूनाम् द्वेष्टि य: सदा
Yadus, enemy who was always

'Fortunately the sinful Kansa is killed with his followers, by his own sins. He always held as the hateful enemies, the noble Yadus who were inclined towards righteousness.'


अपि स्मरति न: कृष्णो मातरं सुहृद: सखीन् ।

गोपान् व्रजम् चात्मनाथं गावो वृन्दावनं गिरिम् ॥१८॥


अपि स्मरति न: कृष्ण:
does remember us Krishna,
मातरम् सुहृद: सखीन्
the mother, kinsmen and friends,
गोपान् व्रजम् च-आत्म-नाथम्
the Gopas, Vraja, and as their own master,
गाव: वृन्दावनम् गिरिम्
the cows, Vrindaavana, the mountain

Does Krishna remember us, his mother, the relatives and friends, the Gopas, Vraja, who know Him as their own master, the cows, Vrindaavana and the mountain Govardhana.


अप्यायास्यति गोविन्द: स्वजनान् सकृदीक्षितुम् ।

तर्हि द्र्क्ष्याम तद्वक्त्रं सुनसं सुस्मितेक्षणम् ॥१९॥


अपि-आयास्यति गोविन्द:
will come back Govinda (protector of cows)
स्वजनान् सकृत्-ईक्षितुम्
His own people, for once to see,
तर्हि द्र्क्ष्याम: तत्-वक्त्रम्
then, we will (get) to see His face
सुनसम् सुस्मित-ईक्षणम्
with well shaped nose, smiling glances

Will, the protector of the cows, Govinda come back for once to see His own people? Then, we will get to see His face with a well shaped nose, and smiling glances.


दावग्नेर्वातवर्षाच्च वृषसर्पाच्च रक्षिता: ।

दुरत्ययेभ्यो मृत्युभ्य: कृष्णेन सुमहात्मना ॥२०॥


दावग्नि:-वात-वर्षात्-च
from forest fire, storms, rains, and
वृष-सर्पात्-च रक्षिता:
bull, python and were protected
दुरत्ययेभ्य: मृत्युभ्य:
difficult to be overcome perils
कृष्णेन सुमहात्मना
by Krishna the most magnanimous

We were protected from the forest fire, storms, rains, and the demons in the form of bull and python, difficult to be overcome death like perils, by The most magnanimous Krishna.


स्मरतां कृष्णवीर्याणि लीलापाङ्गनिरीक्षितम् ।

हसितं भाषितं चाङ्ग सर्वा न: शिथिला: क्रिया: ॥२१॥


स्मरताम् कृष्ण-वीर्याणि
remembering Krishna's valorous deeds,
लीला-अपाङ्ग-निरीक्षितम्
sportingly side glances,
हसितम् भाषितम् च-अङ्ग
laughter, speaking, and O Dear!
सर्वा: न: शिथिला: क्रिया:
All our slackened activities are

O Dear! As we remember the valorous deeds of Krishna, His sporting sidelong glances, His laughter and talks, all our activities are slackened.


सरिच्छैलवनोद्देशान् मुकुन्दपदभूषितान् ।

आक्रीडानीक्षमाणानां मनो याति तदात्मताम् ॥२२॥


सरित्-शैल-वन-उद्देशान्
river, hill, forest, woodlands,
मुकुन्द-पद-भूषितान्
by Mukunda's foot prints resplendent with,
आक्रीडानि-ईक्षमाणानाम्
the playgrounds, watching,
मन: याति तत्-आत्मताम्
minds become Him one with

When we watch the streams, hills, forests, woodlands, and playgrounds graced by, The liberation Giver, Mukunda's foot prints, our minds are absorbed in Him.


मन्ये कृष्णं च रामं च प्राप्ताविह सुरोत्तमौ ।

सुराणां महदर्थाय गर्गस्य वचनं यथा ॥२३॥


मन्ये कृष्णम् च रामम् च
I understand Krishna and Raama and
प्राप्तौ-इह सुर-उत्तमौ
have come here, the gods superior
सुराणाम् महत्-अर्थाय
for the gods' great purpose
गर्गस्य वचनम् यथा
Garga's words according to

I understand that the Supreme Gods, Krishna and Balaraama have come here, for a great purpose of the gods, according to the words of sage Garga.


कंसं नागायुतप्राणं मल्लौ गजपतिं तथा ।

अवधिष्टां लीलयैव पशूनिव मृगाधिप: ॥२४॥


कंसम् नाग-अयुत-प्राणम्
Kansa, of elephants ten thousand strength,
मल्लौ गजपतिम् तथा
the wrestlers two, the elephant chief, also
अवधिष्टाम् लीलया-एव
killed sportingly only
पशून्-इव मृगाधिप:
animal, like the animal king (lion)

'They killed Kansa, who had a strength equal to that of ten thousand elephants, the two wrestlers, Chaanoora and Mushtika, the chief elephant, Kuvalayaapeeda, like the king of the beast, the lion would kill the animals.'


तालत्रयं महासारं धनुर्यष्टिमिवेभराट् ।

बभञ्जैकेन हस्तेन सप्ताहमदधाद् गिरिम् ॥२५॥


ताल-त्रयम् महा-सारम्
Taala (trees) three (long), highly powerful
धनु:-यष्टिम्-इव-इभराट्
the bow staff like an elephant
बभञ्ज-एकेन हस्तेन
broke by one hand
सप्त-अहम्-अदधाद् गिरिम्
for seven days held up the hill

'He broke the very powerful bow's staff, equal to the length of three Taala trees, like an elephant would brake a sugarcane. He lifted up the hill on only one hand for seven days.'


प्रलम्बो धेनुकोऽरिष्टस्तृणावर्तो बकादय: ।

दैत्या: सुरासुरजितो हता येनेह लीलया ॥२६॥


प्रलम्ब: धेनुक:-अरिष्ट:-
Pralamba, Dhenuka, Arishta,
तृणावर्त: बक-आदय:
Trinaavarta, Baka and others
दैत्या: सुर-असुर जित:
the demons, the gods and Asuras conquerors,
हता: येन-इह लीलया
were killed by Whom here, sportingly

'The demons, Pralamba, Dhenuka, Arishta, Trinaavarta, Baka and others, who had conquered the gods and Asuras, were killed here, by Whom, sportingly.'


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति संस्मृत्य संस्मृत्य नन्द: कृष्णानुरक्तधी: ।

अत्युत्कण्ठोऽभवत्तूष्णीं प्रेमप्रसरविह्वल: ॥२७॥


इति संस्मृत्य संस्मृत्य
thus remembering, and remembering,
नन्द: कृष्ण-अनुरक्त-धी:
Nanda, in Krishna longing minded
अति-उत्कण्ठ:-अभवत्-
very concerned became
तूष्णीम् प्रेम-प्रसर-विह्वल:
and quiet by love 's flow overcome

Thus remembering Both the Brothers again and again, Nanda's mind was full of love, concern and longing. He became quiet, overcome by the flow of love.


यशोदा वर्ण्यमानानि पुत्रस्य चरितानि च ।

शृण्वन्त्यश्रूण्यवास्राक्षीत् स्नेहस्नुतपयोधरा ॥२८॥


यशोदा वर्ण्यमानानि
Yashoda, as was being described,
पुत्रस्य चरितानि च
son's deeds, and,
शृण्वती-अश्रूणि-अवास्राक्षीत्
on hearing, tears shed,
स्नेह स्नुत-पयोधरा
with love overflowing breasts

Yashoda heard of her son's exploits, as they were described, and tears shed from her eyes, and her breasts overflowed with love .


तयोरित्थं भगवति कृष्णे नन्दयशोदयो: ।

वीक्ष्यानुरागं परमं नन्दमाहोद्धवो मुदा ॥२९॥


तयो:-इत्थम् भगवति
of them both, such, in The Lord
कृष्णे नन्द-यशोदयो:
Krishna, of Nanda and Yashoda
वीक्ष्य-अनुरागम् परमम्
observing affection supreme
नन्दम्-आह-उद्धव: मुदा
to Nanda said Uddhava delightfully

Observing such supreme affection of them both, Nanda and Yashoda, for The Lord Krishna, Uddhava delightfully said,…


उद्धव उवाच -
Uddhava said -
युवां श्लाघ्यतमौ नूनं देहिनामिह मानद ।

नारायणेऽखिलगुरौ यत्कृता मतिरीदृशी ॥३०॥


युवाम् श्लाघ्यतमौ नूनम्
you both are most praise worthy, surely,
देहिनाम्-इह मानद
of all the beings, here, O Honour givers!
नारायणे-अखिल-गुरौ
in Naaraayana, The Eternal Preceptor
यत् कृता मति:-ईदृशी
in that, are having mental inclination such

O Honour givers! Surely, both of you are highly praise worthy, in that, you have such mental inclination in The Eternal Preceptor Naaraayana.


एतौ हि विश्वस्य च बीजयोनी रामो मुकुन्द: पुरुष: प्रधानम् ।

अन्वीय भूतेषु विलक्षणस्य ज्ञानस्य चेशात इमौ पुराणौ ॥३१॥


एतौ हि विश्वस्य च बीज-योनी
They alone of universe and are material, efficient cause
राम: मुकुन्द: पुरुष: प्रधानम्
Balaraama, Mukunda, The Person Primordial matter,
अन्वीय भूतेषु विलक्षणस्य
entering into the beings, as various
ज्ञानस्य च-ईशाते इमौ पुराणौ
consciousness, and control these Eternal Ones

They alone, Balaraama and Mukunda, the Bestower of liberation, are of universe, material, and efficient cause. They are the Person (soul) and the Primordial Matter. These, Eternal Ones, enter the beings on various levels of consciousness and control them.


यस्मिञ्जन: प्राणवियोगकाले क्षणं समावेश्य मनो विशुद्धम् ।

निर्हृत्य कर्माशयमाशु याति परां गतिं ब्रह्ममयोऽर्कवर्ण: ॥३२॥


यस्मिन्-जन: प्राण-वियोग-काले
in Whom, a being at life leaving time
क्षणम् समावेश्य मनो विशुद्धम्
for a second focuses mind pure
निर्हृत्य कर्म-आशयम्-आशु याति
burning the Karma's storehouse, soon attains
पराम् गतिम् ब्रह्म-मय:-अर्क-वर्ण:
supreme state, Brahma merging with, Sun like lustrous

A being, at the time of death, if even for a moment focuses the pure mind in Whom, the store house of his Karmas are burnt, and he soon attains the supreme state of merging with Brahma, with a Sun like lustre.


तस्मिन् भवन्तावखिलात्महेतौ नारायणे कारणमर्त्यमूर्तौ ।

भावं विधत्तं नितरां महात्मन् किं वावशिष्टं युवयो: सुकृत्यम् ॥३३॥


तस्मिन् भवन्तौ-
in Him, you both,
अखिल-आत्म-हेतौ नारायणे
in of all the Soul and Source Naaraayana,
कारण-मर्त्य-मूर्तौ
for a purpose in a mortal form
भावम् विधत्तम् नितराम्
such devotion invest, unflinching,
महात्मन् किम् वा-अवशिष्टम्
O Noble Souls! what or remains
युवयो: सु-कृत्यम्
of you two meritorious to do

O Noble Souls! That you both invest such unflinching devotion, in The Soul and Source of all, Naaraayana, Who have taken mortal form for a purpose, what, then, meritorious deed remains to be done by you?


आगमिष्यत्यदीर्घेण कालेन व्रजमच्युत: ।

प्रियं विधास्यते पित्रोर्भगवान् सात्वतां पति: ॥३४॥


आगमिष्यति-अदीर्घेण कालेन
will come, before long time
व्रजम्-अच्युत:
to Vraja, The Immortal
प्रियम् विधास्यते पित्रो:-
delight will bring to the parents,
भगवान् सात्वताम् पति:
The Lord, of the Yadu's, the Protector

The Immortal Lord, before long time will come to Vraja, and The Protector of the Yadus' will bring delight to the parents.


हत्वा कंसं रङ्गमध्ये प्रतीपं सर्वसात्वताम् ।

यदाह व: समागत्य कृष्ण: सत्यं करोति तत् ॥३५॥


हत्वा कंसम् रङ्ग-मध्ये
after killing Kansa in the arena's midst,
प्रतीपम् सर्व-सात्वताम्
the enemy of all the Yadus'
यत्-आह व: समागत्य
what said to you both, coming
कृष्ण: सत्यम् करोति तत्
Krishna true will do that

After killing Kansa, the enemy of all the Yadu's, in the midst of the assembly, what Krishna said to you both, He will prove that true, on coming back.


मा खिद्यतं महाभागौ द्रक्ष्यथ: कृष्णमन्तिके ।

अन्तर्हृदि स भूतानामास्ते ज्योतिरिवैधसि ॥३६॥


मा खिद्यतम् महाभागौ
do not grieve, O Highly blessed ones!
द्रक्ष्यथ: कृष्णम्-अन्तिके
will see Krishna near (you)
अन्त:-हृदि स: भूतानाम्-आस्ते
in side the hearts, He, of the beings dwells
ज्योति:-इव-एधसि
fire like in wood

O Highly blessed ones! do not grieve. You will soon see Krishna near you. He dwells in the hearts of all the beings, like fire is latent in wood.


न ह्यस्यास्ति प्रिय: कश्चिन्नाप्रियो वास्त्यमानिन: ।

नोत्तमो नाधमो नापि समानस्यासमोऽपि वा ॥३७॥


न-हि-अस्य-अस्ति
not indeed, His is
प्रिय: कश्चित्-न-अप्रिय:
dear anyone, nor unwelcome
वा-अस्ति-अमानिन:
or is, for (Him) unidentified with any form
न-उत्तम: न-अधम:
not superior, nor inferior,
न-अपि समानस्य-
not even, to The Same,
असम:-अपि वा
unequal also or

To Him, Who is unidentified with any particular form, no one is His dear nor is anyone unwelcome. No one is superior, nor is anyone inferior, or also unequal, for Him, as He is equal to all.


न माता न पिता तस्य न भार्या न सुतादय: ।

नात्मीयो न परश्चापि न देहो न जन्म एव च ॥३८॥


न माता न पिता तस्य
not mother, not father, His
न भार्या न सुत-आदय:
is no wife, no sons and others,
न-आत्मीय: न पर:-च-अपि
no relations, no others and also
न देह: न जन्म एव च
no body, no birth also and

He has no mother, nor father, no wife, nor sons, no relatives nor aliens. And, He also has no body nor birth.


न चास्य कर्म वा लोके सदसन्मिश्रयोनिषु ।

क्रीडार्थ: सोऽपि साधूनां परित्राणाय कल्पते ॥३९॥


न च-अस्य कर्म वा लोके
not and His is action or in the world,
सत्-असत्-मिश्र-योनिषु
in high, low mixed species
क्रीडा-अर्थ: स:-अपि
sporting for, He also
साधूनाम् परित्राणाय कल्पते
of the virtuous protecting, descends

Nor does He have any action in this world. In the high and the low and in the mixed species of life, He descends for the sake of sporting and for protecting the virtuous.


सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति भजते निर्गुणो गुणान् ।

कीडन्नतीतोऽत्र गुणै: सृजत्यवति हन्त्यज: ॥४०॥


सत्त्वम् रज:-तम: इति
Sattva, Rajas, Tamas, these
भजते निर्गुण: गुणान्
assumes, unaffected by the Gunas, the Gunas,
कीडन्-अतीत:-अत्र गुणै:
sporting, transcending (them) here, by the Gunas,
सृजति-अवति हन्ति-अज:
creates, maintains and dissolves, The Unborn

The Birthless Lord, though unaffected by the three Gunas, Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, assumes them here, and transcending them sports, and with them creates maintains and dissolves the universe.


यथा भ्रमरिकादृष्ट्या भ्राम्यतीव महीयते ।

चित्ते कर्तरि तत्रात्मा कर्तेवाहंधिया स्मृत: ॥४१॥


यथा भ्रमरिका-दृष्ट्या
just as, by the revolving sight
भ्राम्यति-इव मही-ईयते
rotates as if the earth seems,
चित्ते कर्तरि तत्र-आत्मा
in the mind of the doer, there the self
कर्ता-एव-अहम्-धिया स्मृत:
doer only I in the mind remembers

Just as to a person who is going round and round, his revolving eyes see the earth as rotating, like that, a person having the idea of doership, in his mind, he remembers himself only as the doer.


युवयोरेव नैवायमात्मजो भगवान् हरि: ।

सर्वेषामात्मजो ह्यात्मा पिता माता स ईश्वर: ॥४२॥


युवयो:-एव न-एव-अयम्-
of you both also not only this
आत्मज: भगवान् हरि:
is son, The Lord Hari
सर्वेषाम्-आत्मज: हि-आत्मा
of all (beings) is the son, indeed the soul,
पिता माता स: ईश्वर:
father, mother, He The Ruler (of all)

The Lord Hari, is not only your son, He is the son of all beings, indeed the very Soul, father, mother, and The Ruler of all.


दृष्टं श्रुतं भूतभवद् भविष्यत् स्थास्नुश्चरिष्णुर्महदल्पकं च ।

विनाच्युताद् वस्तु तरां न वाच्यं स एव सर्वं परमार्थभूत: ॥४३॥


दृष्टम् श्रुतम् भूत-अभवत्
(all that is) seen, heard, is past, present,
भविष्यत् स्थास्नु:-
yet to come, immobile,
चरिष्णु:-महत्-अल्पकम् च
mobile, great, small,
विना-अच्युतात् वस्तु तराम्
apart from The Eternal, thing any,
न वाच्यम् स एव सर्वं
is not worth naming, He altogether is all
परम-अर्थ-भूत:
The Supreme Truth being

All that is seen, heard, that which is past, or present, or yet to come, immobile, or mobile, great, or small, anything, is not worth naming apart from Him, The Eternal, as He alone is everything, The Supreme Truth being.


एवं निशा सा ब्रुवतोर्व्यतीता नन्दस्य कृष्णानुचरस्य राजन् ।

गोप्य: समुत्थाय निरूप्य दीपान् वास्तून् समभ्यर्च्य दधीन्यमन्थन् ॥४४॥


एवम् निशा सा ब्रुवतो:-व्यतीता
thus, night that, talking, passed
नन्दस्य कृष्ण-अनुचरस्य राजन्
of Nanda and Krishna's friend, O King!
गोप्य: समुत्थाय निरूप्य दीपान्
The Gopis, waking up, lighted the lamps
वास्तून् समभ्यर्च्य
Vaastu worshipped, the curds churned

O King! That night of Nanda and Krishna's friend, Uddhava, thus passed, talking. The Gopis awoke and lighted the lamps and worshipped Vaastu, the deity presiding over the house, and then churned the curds.


ता दीपदीप्तैर्मणिभिर्विरेजू रज्जूर्विकर्षद्भुजकङ्कणस्रज: ।

चलन्नितम्बस्तनहारकुण्डलत्विषत्कपोलारुणकुङ्कुमानना: ॥४५॥


ता: दीप-दीप्तै:-मणिभि:-विरेजु:
they, by the lamp lighted, like gems shone
रज्जो:-विकर्षत्-भुज-कङ्कण-स्रज:-
the cord pulling, arms, bangles, garland
चलत्-नितम्ब-स्तन-हार-कुण्डल-
shaking hips, breasts necklaces, earrings'
त्विषत्-कपोल-अरुण-कुङ्कुम्-आनना:
shine on the cheeks, red saffron faces

They, the Gopis shone like gems, as the lamps were lighted. As they pulled the churning cord, their arms and bangles and garlands rocked, and the hips, breasts and necklaces shook, and the earrings shone on their cheeks, with their faces smeared with red saffron.


उद्गायतीनामरविन्दलोचनं व्रजाङ्गनानां दिवमस्पृशद्ध्वनि: ।

दध्नश्च निर्मन्थनशब्दमिश्रितो निरस्यते येन दिशाममङ्गलम् ॥४६॥


उद्गायतीनाम्-
of (them) singing loudly
अरविन्द-लोचनम्
of The Lotus Eyed (Lord)
व्रज-अङ्गनानाम्
of Vraja's women
दिवम्-अस्पृशत्-ध्वनि:
the heavens touched the sound
दध्न:-च निर्मन्थन-
of the curd and churned
शब्द-मिश्रित:
sound combined
निरस्यते येन
dispels by which
दिशाम्-अमङ्गलम्
of the quarters' evil forces

As the women of Vraja sang loudly, of The Lotus Eyed Lord, their voices touched the heavens. Combined with the sound of the churning of the curd, it dispelled the evil forces of the quarters.


भगवत्युदिते सूर्ये नन्दद्वारि व्रजौकस: ।

दृष्ट्वा रथं शातकौम्भं कस्यायमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥४७॥


भगवति-उदिते सूर्ये
on The Lord rising Sun,
नन्द-द्वारि व्रज-औकस:
on Nanda gate, Vraja women
दृष्ट्वा रथम् शातकौम्भम्
seeing the chariot, gold plated
कस्य-अयम्-इति च-अब्रुवन्
'Whose this?' this and said

On the rising of The Sun Lord, the women of Vraja saw the gold plated chariot on the gate of Nanda. And they said, 'Whose is it?'


अक्रूर आगत: किं वा य: कंसस्यार्थसाधक: ।

येन नीतो मधुपुरीं कृष्ण: कमललोचन: ॥४८॥


अक्रूर: आगत: किम् वा
Akroora has come, is it or,
य: कंसस्य-अर्थ-साधक:
who is Kansa's purpose fulfiller,
येन नीत: मधुपुरीम्
by whom was taken to Mathura,
कृष्ण: कमल-लोचन:
Krishna, lotus eyed

Or is it that Akroora has come back, who is the fulfiller of Kansa's purposes, and who had taken the lotus eyed Krishna to Mathura.


किं साधयिष्यत्यस्माभिर्भर्तु: प्रेतस्य निष्कृतिम् ।

इति स्त्रीणां वन्दतीनामुद्धवोऽगात् कृताह्निक: ॥४९॥


किम् साधयिष्यति-
what will (he) perform
अस्माभि:-भर्तु:
by us, his master's
प्रेतस्य निष्कृतिम्
deceased manes' oblations
इति स्त्रीणाम्
this by the women
वन्दतीनाम्-उद्धव:-
saying, Uddhava
अगात् कृत-आह्निक:
came having done daily rituals

'Now, with our bodies, will he perform the manes' oblations of his deceased master?' As the women were saying so, Uddhava, came having performed his daily rituals.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशम स्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे नन्दशोकापनयनं नाम षट्चत्वारिंश: अध्याय: ॥४६॥


Thus ends the forty-sixth discourse entitled 'Shree Krishna dispels the agony of Nanda,' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
