श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
पितरावुपलब्धार्थौ विदित्वा पुरुषोत्तम: ।
मा भूदिति निजां मायां ततान जनमोहिनीम् ॥१॥
पितरौ-उपलब्ध-अर्थौ
the parents have gained The Truth,
विदित्वा पुरुषोत्तम:
knowing, The Person Supreme
मा भूत्-इति निजाम् मायाम्
may not thus be, thus, Own Maayaa
ततान जन-मोहिनीम्
spread, the people infatuating
The Supreme Person Krishna, knowing that His parents had attained knowledge of The Truth, and thinking that it should not be so, spread His Own Maayaa which deludes the people.
उवाच पितरावेत्य साग्रज: सात्वतर्षभ: ।
प्रश्रयावनत: प्रीणन्नम्ब तातेति सादरम् ॥२॥
उवाच पितरौ-एत्य
said to the parents approaching
स-अग्रज: सात्वत-ऋषभ:
with elder Brother, of the Yadus' The Foremost,
प्रश्रश्य-अवनत: प्रीणन्-
humbly bowing, pleasing them,
अम्ब तात-इति सादरम्
'O Mother! Father!' Thus respectfully,
The jewel of the Yadus', Krishna, along with His elder Brother, approached His parents, and bowing to them humbly, pleasing them, said respectfully, "O Mother! O Father!......
नास्मत्तो युवयोस्तात नित्योत्कण्ठितयोरपि ।
बाल्यपौगण्डकैशोरा: पुत्राभ्यामभवन् क्वचित् ॥३॥
न-अस्मत्-त: युवयो:-तात
not from us (both), of you two, Father!
नित्य-उत्कण्ठितयो:-अपि
always longing (for us) though
बाल्य-पौगण्ड-कैशोरा:
infancy, childhood and boyhood
पुत्राभ्याम्-अभवन् क्वचित्
of the sons attained anything
'O Father! Even though you two were always anxious about we both, you never attained the joys of our infancy, childhood and boyhood.'
न लब्धो दैवहतयोर्वासो नौ भवदन्तिके ।
यां बाला: पितृगेहस्था विन्दन्ते लालिता मुदम् ॥४॥
न लब्ध: दैव-हतयो:-
was not attained, by providence struck,
वास: नौ भवत्-अन्तिके
living by us, you near,
याम् बाला: पितृ-गेह-स्था
that which the children in father's house living
विन्दन्ते लालिता: मुदम्
attain, fondled, joy
Struck as we are by Providence, we did not get to live with you, and so we did not enjoy that fondling and joy which the children living with their parents enjoy.
सर्वार्थसम्भवो देहो जनित: पोषितो यत: ।
न तयोर्यानि निर्वेशं पित्रोर्मर्त्य: शतायुषा ॥५॥
सर्व-अर्थ-सम्भव: देह:
of all the objects realizing the body,
जनित: पोषित: यत:
giving birth to, and nourishing, by whom,
न तयो:-यानि निर्वेशम्
not their those obligations,
पित्रो:-मर्त्य: शता-आयुषा
of the parents, a mortal by hundred years age
The body by which all the four objects of life are realized, that body is given birth to and nourished by the parents. That obligation of the parents can not be repaid by the mortal even by serving them for a hundred years of age.
यस्तयोरात्मज: कल्प आत्मना च धनेन च ।
वृत्तिं न दद्यात्तं प्रेत्य स्वमांसं खादयन्ति हि ॥६॥
य:-तयो:-आत्मज: कल्प:
who, their, son, resources,
आत्मना च धनेन च
by himself, and by wealth and
वृत्तिम् न दद्यात्-तम् प्रेत्य
service does not give, him, servants of Yama,
स्व-मांसम् खादयन्ति हि
his own flesh make to eat, indeed
The son of the parents, who by himself, by his resources and by wealth does not serve his parents, the servants of Yama make him eat his own flesh.
मातरं पितरं वृद्धं भार्यां साध्वीं सुतं शिशुम् ।
गुरुं विप्रं प्रपन्नं च कल्पोऽबिभ्रच्छ्वसन् मृत: ॥७॥
मातरम् पितरम् वृद्धम्
mother, father, the aged,
भार्याम् साध्वीम् सुतम् शिशुम्
wife noble, son, child,
गुरुम् विप्रम् प्रपन्नम् च
preceptor, Braahmana, one seeking protection, and
कल्प:-अबिभ्रत्-श्वसन् मृत:
capable, not supporting, breaths (though) is dead
He who is capable, and does not support his mother, father, the aged, his noble wife, his infant son, his preceptor, a Braahmana, and the one who seeks his protection, is as good as dead, even though he breathes.
तन्नावकल्पयो: कंसान्नित्यमुद्विग्नचेतसो: ।
मोघमेते व्यतिक्रान्ता दिवसा वामनर्चतो: ॥८॥
तत्-नौ-अकल्पयो: कंसात्-
therefore, ours, incapable, from Kansa,
नित्यम्-उद्विग्न-चेतसो:
constantly afraid in mind
मोघम्-एते व्यतिक्रान्ता:
uselessly, these have passed
दिवसा: वाम्-अनर्चतो:
the days, you both not serving
Being constantly afraid of Kansa, in mind, we were incapable, to serve you both, and so all these days have passed by fruitlessly .
तत् क्षन्तुमर्हथस्तात मातर्नौ परतन्त्रयो: ।
अकुर्वतोर्वां शुश्रुषां क्लिष्टयोर्दुर्हृदा भृशम् ॥९॥
तत् क्षन्तुम्-अर्हथ:-
therefore, to pardon are capable
तात मात:-नौ पर-तन्त्रयो:
father, mother, us, by the others oppressed,
अकुर्वतो:-वाम् शुश्रुषाम्
were not doing to you both service,
क्लिष्टयो:-दुर्हृदा भृशम्
pained by evil minded very much
O Father! O Mother! Oppressed and so pained, as we were by the evil minded Kansa, we failed to serve you both. Therefore do be pleased to forgive us.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति मायामनुष्यस्य हरेर्विश्वात्मनो गिरा ।
मोहितावङ्कमारोप्य परिष्वज्यापतुर्मुदम् ॥१०॥
इति माया-मनुष्यस्य
thus, by Maayaa becoming the man's
हरे:-विश्वात्मन: गिरा
of Shree Hari, the world's Soul, words,
मोहितौ-अङ्कम्-आरोप्य
deluded, in the lap placing
परिष्वज्य-आपतु:-मुदम्
embraced, attained great delight
Of Shree Hari, The Soul of the universe, in the form of a man by Maaya, hearing such words, the parents were deluded, and taking Him in the lap, embraced Him with great delight.
सिञ्चन्तावश्रुधाराभि: स्नेहपाशेन चावृतौ ।
न किञ्चिदूचतू राजन् वाष्पकण्ठौ विमोहितौ ॥११॥
सिञ्चन्तौ-अश्रु-धाराभि:
bathing (Him) with tears' streams,
स्नेह-पाशेन च-आवृतौ
by affection's bondage covered
न किञ्चित्-ऊचतु: राजन्
not anything spoke, O King!
वाष्प-कण्ठौ विमोहितौ
tear choked throat bewildered
O King! The parents bathed Him in tears, they were bound by the cords of affection, and were completely bewildered, with their throats choked with tears, they did not speak anything.
एवमाश्वास्य पितरौ भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।
मातामहं तूग्रसेनं यदूनामकरोन्नृपम् ॥१२॥
एवम्-आश्वास्य पितरौ
thus, comforting the parents,
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's Son,
मातामहम् तु-उग्रसेनम्
maternal grandfather, indeed Ugrasena
यदूनाम्-अकरोत्-नृपम्
of the Yadus', made the king
The Lord, Devaki's Son, comforted His parents. Then, indeed, He made Ugrasena, His maternal grandfather, the king of The Yadus.
आह चास्मान् महाराज प्रजाश्चाज्ञप्तुमर्हसि ।
ययाति शापात् यदुभिर्नासितव्यं नृपासने ॥१३॥
आह च-अस्मान् महाराज
said and, 'Us, O Great King!
प्रजा:-च-आज्ञप्तुम्-अर्हसि
subjects and to command are worthy
ययाति शापात् यदुभि:-न-
by Yayaati's curse, by the Yadus, not
आसितव्यम् नृप-आसने
should be sat on the king's throne
And said,'O Great king! You are worthy to command us, and the people of Mathura. By the curse of Yayaati, we Yadus should not sit on the royal throne.'
मयि भृत्य उपासीने भवतो विबुधादय: ।
बलिं हरन्त्यवनता: किमुतान्ये नराधिपा: ॥१४॥
मयि भृत्य उपासीने
me, the servant waiting
भवत: विबुध-आदय:
on you, gods and others
बलिम् हरन्ति-अवनता:
tribute will bring, bent with honour,
किम्-उत्-अन्ये नराधिपा:
what indeed of other kings
When, as a servant, I am waiting on you, the gods and others bent in honour, will bring tributes to you, what then of other kings?
सर्वान् स्वाञ्ज्ञातिसंबन्धान् दिग्भ्य: कंसभयाकुलान् ।
यदुवृष्ण्यन्धकमधुदाशार्हकुकुरादिकान् ॥१५॥
सर्वान् स्वान्-ज्ञाति-संबन्धान्
all own kinsmen, relations
दिग्भ्य: कंस-भय-आकुलान्
from all quarters, by Kansa's terror traumatised
यदु-वृष्णि-अन्धक-मधु-
Yadu, Vrishnee, Andhaka, Madhu,
दाशार्ह-कुकुर-आदिकान्
Dashaarha, Kukura and others
All of His own kinsmen, relations, who were traumatized by the terror of Kansa, the Yadus, Vrishnees, Andhakas, Madhus, Daashaarha's, Kukura's and others,…
सभाजितान् समाश्वास्य विदेशावासकर्शितान् ।
न्यवासयत् स्वगेहेषु वित्तै: संतर्प्य विश्वकृत् ॥१६॥
सभाजितान् समाश्वास्य
the honoured, consoled,
विदेश-आवास-कर्शितान्
by abroad living, weakened,
न्यवासयत् स्व-गेहेषु
relodged in own houses,
वित्तै: संतर्प्य विश्व-कृत्
with wealth gratifying, The Universe's Creator
Then, the Creator of the universe, consoled them, honoured them, who were weakened by living abroad, and relodged them in their own houses and gratified them with riches.
कृष्णसंकर्षणभुजैर्गुप्ता लब्धमनोरथा: ।
गृहेषु रेमिरे सिद्धा: कृष्णरामगतज्वरा ॥१७॥
कृष्ण-संकर्षण-भुजै:-
by Krishna and Balaraama's arms
गुप्ता: लब्ध-मनोरथा:
protected, having achieved all desires,
गृहेषु रेमिरे सिद्धा:
in the house lived happily, the realized of purposes
कृष्ण-राम गत-ज्वरा:
by Krishna and Balaraama, having gone all agonies
They happily lived in their houses, protected by the powerful arms of Krishna and Balaraama. By the presence of Krishna and Balaraama, they had attained their desires, and realized their purposes, and all their agonies had gone.
वीक्षन्तोऽहरह: प्रीता मुकुन्दवदनाम्बुजम् ।
नित्यं प्रमुदितं श्रीमत् सदयस्मितवीक्षणम् ॥१८॥
वीक्षन्तो:-अह:-अह: प्रीता:
looking at, day after day, delighted,
मुकुन्द-वदन-अम्बुजम्
Mukunda's face lotus,
नित्यम् प्रमुदितम् श्रीमत्
ever cheerful, honourable,
सदय-स्मित-वीक्षणम्
compassionate, smiling glances
Day after day, they got to see the charming lotus face of Mukunda, ever cheerful, honourable, and with compassionate smiling glances.
तत्र प्रवयसोऽप्यासन् युवानोऽतिबलौजस: ।
पिबन्तोऽक्षैर्मुकुन्दस्यमुखाम्बुजसुधां मुहु: ॥१९॥
तत्र प्रवयस:-अपि-आसन्
there, the aged, became
युवान:-अति-बल-ओजस:
young with good strength and power,
पिबन्त:-अक्षै:-मुकुन्दस्य-
imbibing with (their) eyes, Mukunda's
मुख-अम्बुज-सुधाम् मुहु:
face lotus nectar, again and again
There, in Mathura, even the aged became young, endowed with great strength and power, by again and again imbibing with their eyes the nectar of the lotus face of Mukunda, the Bestower of liberation.
अथ नन्दं समासाद्य भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।
संकर्षणश्च राजेन्द्र परिष्वज्येदमूचतु: ॥२०॥
अथ नन्दम् समासाद्य
then, Nanda approaching,
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's Son,
संकर्षण:-च राजेन्द्र
Balaraama and, O King!
परिष्वज्य-इदम्-ऊचतु:
embracing, this said,..
Oh great King! Then The Lord, Devaki's Son, and Balaraama approached Nanda, embraced him, and said this,….
पितर्युवाभ्यां स्निग्धाभ्यां पोषितौ लालितौ भृशम् ।
पित्रोरभ्यधिका प्रीतिरात्मजेष्वात्मनोऽपि हि ॥२१॥
पित:-युवाभ्याम् स्निग्धाभ्याम्
'O Father! By you both, full of affection,
पोषितौ लालितौ भृशम्
nourished and fondled very much
पित्रो:-अभ्यधिका प्रीति:-
of the parents, is greater love
आत्मजेषु-आत्मन:-अपि हि
for the sons, themselves even, indeed,
'O Father! By both of you, full of affection, we both have been nourished and fondled very much. The love of the parents is more greater for their sons than even for themselves.
स पिता सा च जननी यौ पुष्णीतां स्वपुत्रवत् ।
शिशून् बन्धुभिरुत्सृष्टानकल्पै: पोषरक्षणे ॥२२॥
स: पिता सा च जननी
he is the father, she and the mother,
यौ पुष्णीताम् स्व-पुत्र-वत्
who both nurture own son like
शिशून् बन्धुभि:-उत्सृष्टान्-
children by the friends abandoned,
अकल्पै: पोष-रक्षणे
incapable in nurturing and protecting
'He is the father and she the mother, both of whom nurture like their own son, the children abandoned by the friends who are not capable to nurture or protect them.'
यात यूयं व्रजं तात वयं च स्नेहदु:खितान् ।
ज्ञातीन् वो द्रष्टुमेष्यामो विधाय सुहृदां सुखम् ॥२३॥
यात यूयम् व्रजम् तात
'return you both to Vraja, O Father!
वयम् च स्नेह-दु:खितान्
We also, by affection suffering,
ज्ञातीन् व: द्रष्टुम्-एष्याम:
kinsmen, you, to see will come
विधाय सुहृदाम् सुखम्
having made the dear ones happy
'O Dear Father! You two return to Vraja. After having made the dear ones happy here, we will also come to see you all, and the kinsmen, who suffer because of affection for us.'
एवं सान्त्वय्य भगवान् नन्दं सव्रजमच्युत: ।
वासोऽलङ्कारकुप्याद्यैरर्हयामास सादरम् ॥२४॥
एवम् सान्त्वय्य भगवान्
thus consoling, The Lord,
नन्दम् सव्रजम्-अच्युत:
Nanda, along with the Vraja (people), The immortal
वास:-अलङ्कार-कुप्य-आद्यै:-
with clothes, ornaments, and metal vessels etc.,
अर्हयामास सादरम्
honoured respectfully
The immortal Lord thus consoled Nanda and the other people of Vraja, and respectfully honoured them with gifts of clothes, ornaments, and various metal vessels.
इत्युक्तस्तौ परिष्वज्य नन्द: प्रणयविह्वल: ।
पूरयन्नश्रुभिर्नेत्रे सह गोपैर्व्रजं ययौ ॥२५॥
इति-उक्तौ परिष्वज्य
thus spoken to, embracing
नन्द: प्रणय-विह्वल:
Nanda, with love overwhelmed
पूरयन्-अश्रुभि:-नेत्रे
filling with tears, the eyes,
सह गोपै:-व्रजम् ययौ
with the Gopas, to Vraja went
Nanda, having been spoken to thus, embraced Him, overwhelmed with love, and with eyes full of tears, went away to Vraja along with the Gopas.
अथ शूरसुतो राजन् पुत्रयो: समकारयत् ।
पुरोधसा ब्राह्मणैश्च यथावद् द्विजसंस्कृतिम् ॥२६॥
अथ शूरसुत: राजन्
then, Vasudeva, O King!
पुत्रयो: समकारयत्
of the two sons got to be done
पुरोधसा ब्राह्मणै:-च
by the priest (sage Garga) and Braahmanas
यथावत् द्विज-संस्कृतिम्
as per system, the Dvija ritual
O King! Then Shoora's son, Vasudeva, got the priest, sage Garga and other Braahmanas to perform, according to the system, the ritual of Dvija, the investiture of the sacred thread, for his two sons.
तेभ्योऽदाद् दक्षिणा गावो रुक्ममाला: स्वलंकृता: ।
स्वलंकृतेभ्य: संपूज्य सवत्सा: क्षौममालिनी: ॥२७॥
तेभ्य:-अदात् दक्षिणा गाव:
to them gave fees, cows,
रुक्म-माला: सु-अलंकृता:
golden chains, well decorated,
सु-अलंकृतेभ्य: संपूज्य
to the well adorned, worshipping,
सवत्सा: क्षौम-मालिनी:
with the calves, with silk cloth and garlands
Worshipping them well, he gave them fees, well decorated golden chains, and cows, well adorned with silk and garlands, with their calves.
या: कृष्णरामजन्मर्क्षे मनोदत्ता महामति: ।
ताश्चाददादनुस्मृत्य कंसेनाधर्मतो हृता: ॥२८॥
या: कृष्ण-राम-जन्म-ऋक्षे
those, Krishna, Balaraama's, at birth time,
मन:-दत्ता: महामति:
mentally given, by the lofty minded
ता:-च-अददात्-अनुस्मृत्य
those and gave remembering
कंसेन-अधर्मत: हृता:
by Kansa unlawfully seized
The lofty minded Vasudeva also gave, remembering, those cows which he had mentally given at the time of Krishna and Balaraama's birth, and which Kansa had unlawfully seized from them.
ततश्च लब्धसंस्कारौ द्विजत्वं प्राप्य सुव्रतौ ।
गर्गाद् यदुकुलाचार्याद् गायत्रं व्रतमास्थितौ ॥२९॥
तत:-च लब्ध-संस्कारौ
then and, having got the ritual
द्विजत्वम् प्राप्य सुव्रतौ
of Dvija attaining the well vowed
गर्गात् यदु-कुल-आचार्यात्
from Garga, the Yadu races' preceptor,
गायत्रम् व्रतम्-आस्थितौ
Gaayatri vows took
Then, and, the well vowed Krishna and Balaraama, having attained the state of Dvija with the rituals, from the preceptor of the Yadu race, sage Garga, took the vow of Gaayatri.
प्रभवौ सर्वविद्यानां सर्वज्ञौ जगदीश्वरौ ।
नान्यसिद्धामलज्ञानं गूहमानौ नरेहितै: ॥३०॥
प्रभवौ सर्व-विद्यानाम्
(They Both) the source of all learning,
सर्वज्ञौ जगत्-ईश्वरौ
the All Knowing, of the universe The Rulers
न-अन्य-सिद्ध-अमल-ज्ञानम्
not by other (source) attained pure wisdom
गूहमानौ नर-इहितै:
concealing by human behaviour
Both the Brothers, were the source of all learning, were The all Knowing, Rulers of the universe, having pure wisdom attained not from any other source, which they had concealed by Their human behaviour.
अथो गुरुकुले वासमिच्छन्तावुपजग्मतु: ।
काश्यं सान्दीपनिं नाम ह्यवन्तीपुरवासिनम् ॥३१॥
अथ: गुरुकुले वासम्-
then, in the preceptor's house to live
इच्छन्तौ-उपजग्मतु:
desiring, went to
काश्यम् सान्दीपनिम् नाम
Kaashyapa Braahmana, Sandeepani, named,
हि-अवन्तीपुर-वासिनम्
indeed, of Ujjain the resident
Then, They Both, desiring to live in the house of the preceptor, went to the Braahmana of Kashyapa race, Sandeepani by name, a resident of Ujjain.
यथोपसाद्य तौ दान्तौ गुरौ वृत्तिमनिन्दिताम् ।
ग्राहयन्तावुपेतौ स्म भक्त्या देवमिवाहतौ ॥३२॥
यथा-उपसाद्य तौ दान्तौ
duly approaching, They Both, timidly,
गुरौ वृत्तिम्-अनिन्दिताम्
in the preceptor's service, the unblemished
ग्राहयन्तौ-उपेतौ स्म
undertook, performed
भक्त्या देवम्-इव-आहतौ
devotionally, god like reverentially
They Both duly approached the preceptor, and taking him to be god like, timidly undertook to perform unblemished service to him, with devotion and reverence.
तयोर्द्वजवरस्तुष्ट: शुद्धभावानुवृत्तिभि: ।
प्रोवाच वेदानखिलान् साङ्गोपनिषदो गुरु: ॥३३॥
तयो:-द्विज-वर:-तुष्ट:
with Them Both, the Braahmana foremost, gratified
शुद्ध-भाव-अनुवृत्तिभि:
by the pure devotion and service
प्रोवाच वेदान्-अखिलान्
rendered the Vedas, whole,
स-अङ्ग:-उपनिषद: गुरु:
with the Angas, the Upanishads, the preceptor
The foremost Braahmana, the preceptor Sandeepani was gratified by the pure service rendered with devotion by Them Both, and taught to them the whole of the Vedas, along with the Angas and the Upanishads.
सरहस्यं धनुर्वेदं धर्मान् न्यायपथांस्तथा ।
तथा चान्वीक्षिकां विद्यां राजनीतिं च षड्विधाम् ॥३४॥
स-रहस्यम् धनु:-वेदम्
with the secrets, the Dhanurveda,
धर्मान् न्याय-पथान्-तथा
the Dharmas, of law the codes, and
तथा च-आन्वीक्षिकाम् विद्याम्
also and the logic science,
राजनीतिम् च षड्-विधाम्
politics and the six branches
The Dhanurveda with its secrets of Mantras etc., the codes of law, and also the science of logic and politics with the six branches.
सर्व नरवरश्रेष्ठौ सर्वविद्याप्रवर्तकौ ।
सकृन्निगदमात्रेण तौ संजगृहतुर्नृप ॥३५॥
सर्व नर-वर-श्रेष्ठौ
of the men jewels The Foremost
सर्व-विद्या-प्रवर्तकौ
of the all the learnings The Originators,
सकृत्-निगद-मात्रेण
once learning merely,
तौ संजगृहतु:-नृप
They Both learned, O King!
O King! They Both are the foremost of the all the best of men, They are the Originators of all the learnings. By learning the lesson just once, They learnt everything.
अहोरात्रैश्चतु:षष्ट्या संयत्तौ तावती: कला: ।
गुरुदक्षिणयाऽऽचार्यं छन्दयामासतुर्नृप ॥३६॥
अह:-रात्रै:-चतु:षष्ट्या
in days and nights sixty-four,
संयत्तौ तावती: कला:
(They) with controlled minds, those many arts (learnt)
गुरु-दक्षिणया-आचार्यम्
for the preceptor's fees, the teacher
छन्दयामासतु:-नृप
persuaded, O King!
O King! Within sixty-four days and nights, with controlled minds, They learnt as many arts, and then persuaded Their preceptor to ask for his desired preceptors' fees.
द्विजस्तयोस्तं महिमानमद्भुतं संलक्ष्य राजन्नतिमानुषीं मतिम् ।
सम्मन्त्र्य पत्न्या स महार्णवे मृतं बालं प्रभासे वरयाम्बभूव ह ॥३७॥
द्विज:-तयो:-तम्
the Braahmana, Their, that
महिमानम्-अद्भुतम् संलक्ष्य
great glory wonderful percieving,
राजन्-अति-मानुषीम् मतिम्
O King! very super human intelligence
सम्मन्त्र्य पत्न्या स:
discussing with (his) wife, he,
महार्णवे मृतम् बालम् प्रभासे
in the mighty ocean, dead child, in Prabhaas,
वरयाम्-बभूव ह
asked for, it is said
O King! The Braahmana preceptor percieved the great wonderful glory of the Two Brothers, with Their super human intelligence. He discussed with his wife and asked for his son who had died in the mighty ocean near Prabhaasa-kshetra.
तथेत्यथारुह्य महारथौ रथं प्रभासमासाद्य दुरन्तविक्रमौ ।
वेलामुपव्रज्य निषीदतु: क्षणं सिन्धुर्विदित्वार्हणमाहरत्तयो: ॥३८॥
तथा-इति-अथ-आरुह्य
'So be it', thus then mounting
महारथौ रथम्
the Two car-warriors, on the chariot
प्रभासम्-आसाद्य दुरन्त-विक्रमौ
Prabhaasa, having reached', of endless power,
वेलाम्-उपव्रज्य निषीदतु: क्षणम्
to the shore going, sat, for some time,
सिन्धु:-विदित्वा-
the ocean knowing (Their glory)
अर्हणम्-आहरत्-तयो:
presents brought for them
They Both, the two car-warriors, of endless power, said, 'So be it,' and mounted Their chariot and reached Prabhaasa. There, They sat on the sea shore for a while. The ocean knowing Their glory, brought presents for Them.
तमाह भगवानाशु गुरुपुत्र: प्रदीयताम् ।
योऽसाविह त्वया ग्रस्तो बालको महतोर्मिणा ॥३९॥
तम्-आह भगवान्-
to him said The Lord
आशु गुरु-पुत्र: प्रदीयताम्
'soon our preceptors son give
य:-असौ-इह त्वया ग्रस्त:
that which here, by you was swallowed,
बालक: महता-ऊर्मिणा
the child, by the giant wave'
The Lord said to him, ' Give us soon, the son of our preceptor. That child which was here swallowed by you by a giant wave.'
समुद्र उवाच -
The ocean said -
नैवाहार्षमहं देव दैत्य पञ्चजनो महान् ।
अन्तर्जलचर: कृष्ण शङ्खरूपधरोऽसुर: ॥४०॥
न-एव-अहार्षम्-अहम् देव
not even take away I, O Lord,
दैत्य: पञ्चजन: महान्

अन्त:-जलचर: कृष्ण
inside the waters living, O Krishna
शङ्ख-रूप-धर:-असुर:
conch form taking demon
’O Lord, I did not even take him away. There is a great Daitya, named Panchajanya, O Krishna, who lives inside the waters taking the form of a conch, is a big demon.
आस्ते तेनाहृतो नूनं तच्छ्रुत्वा सत्वरं प्रभु: ।
जलमाविश्य तं हत्वा नापश्यदुदरेऽर्भकम् ॥४१॥
आस्ते तेन-आहृत: नूनम्
it is, that, by him is taken away, surely,
तत्-श्रुत्वा सत्वरम् प्रभु:
that hearing, quickly, The Lord
जलम्-आविश्य तम् हत्वा
the water entered, him killing,
न-अपश्यत्-उदरे-अर्भकम्
did not see in the abdomen the child
'Surely he has taken him away.' The Lord hearing that, quickly entered the water and killed the demon, but did not see the child in his abdomen.
तदङ्गप्रभवं शङ्खमादाय रथमागमत् ।
तत: संयमनीं नाम यमस्य दयितां पुरीम् ॥४२॥
तत्-अङ्ग-प्रभवम् शङ्खम्-
that, his body forming conch,
आदाय रथम्-आगमत्
taking, to the chariot came
तत: संयमनीम् नाम
then to Samyamanee named
यमस्य दयिताम् पुरीम्
Yama's favourite city
Taking the conch which had formed the body of the demon, Krishna came to the chariot, and went to the favourite city of Yama, namely, Samyamanee.
गत्वा जनार्दन: शङ्खं प्रदध्मौ सहलायुध: ।
शङ्खनिर्हादमाकर्ण्य प्रजासंयमनो यम: ॥४३॥
गत्वा जनार्दन: शङ्खम्
going, Krishna, the conch
प्रदध्मौ स-हलायुध:
blew with Balaraama,
शङ्ख-निर्हादम्-आकर्ण्य
the conch's blast hearing,
प्रजा-संयमन: यम:
the peoples' controller, Yama,
Going there, Krishna, solicited by the people, blew the conch with Balaraama. Hearing the blast of the conch, the controller of the people, Yama,….
तयो: सपर्यां महतीं चक्रे भक्त्युपबृंहिताम् ।
उवाचावनत: कृष्णं सर्वभूताशयालयम् ।
लीला मनुष्य हे विष्णो युवयो: करवाम किम् ॥४४॥
तयो: सपर्याम् महतीम् चक्रे
Their worship grand performed
भक्ति-उपबृंहिताम्
with devotion systematically
उवाच-अवनत: कृष्णम्
said, bowed to Krishna,
सर्व-भूत-आशय-आलयम्
of all the beings heart residing
लीला मनुष्य हे विष्णो
'sporting human form, O Vishnu!
युवयो: करवाम किम्
for You Both should do what'
He performed a grand worship for Them, systematically and with devotion. Humbly bowing, said to Krishna, having abode in the hearts of all beings, 'O Vishnu! Sporting a human form, what should I do for You Both?'
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
गुरुपुत्रमिहानीतं निजकर्मनिबन्धनम् ।
आनयस्व महाराज मच्छासनपुरस्कृत: ॥४५॥
गुरु-पुत्रम्-इह-आनीतम्
preceptors son, here, brought,
निज-कर्म-निबन्धनम्
by (his) own actions' bound by
आनयस्व महाराज
bring, O Great King!
मत्-शासन पुरस्कृत:
by My command impelled
O Great King! The son of My preceptor, who was bound by his own Karma, and whom you had brought here, impelled by My command, do bring him.
तथेति तेनोपानीतं गुरुपुत्रं यदूत्तमौ ।
दत्त्वा स्वगुरवे भूयो वृणीष्वेति तमूचतु: ॥४६॥
तथा-इति तेन-ऊपानीतम्
'So be it,' thus, by him brought
गुरु-पुत्रम् यदु-उत्तमौ
the preceptors son, the Yadus' foremost,
दत्त्वा स्व-गुरवे भूय:
gave, to own preceptor, again,
वृणीष्व-इति तम्-ऊचतु:
do ask for another boon, this to him said
'So be it,' thus saying, Yama brought the son of the preceptor. Both The Foremost of the Yadus, gave the child to Their own preceptor, and said to him again, 'Do ask for another boon.'
गुरु: उवाच -
The Preceptor said -
सम्यक् संपादितो वत्स गुरुनिष्क्रय: ।
को नु युष्मद्विधगुरो: कामानामवशिष्यते ॥४७॥
सम्यक् संपादित: वत्स
'well dispensed, O Son!
गुरु-निष्क्रय:
is preceptor's fees
क: नु युष्मत्-विध-गुरो:
what indeed, of You like's preceptor's
कामानाम्-अवशिष्यते
desires remain
'O Sons! The fees of the preceptor is well dispensed by You Two.' What desires indeed, of a preceptor of Your like students, remain?'
गच्छतं स्वगृहं वीरौ कीर्तिर्वामस्तु पावनी ।
छन्दांस्ययातयामानि भवन्त्विह परत्र च ॥४८॥
गच्छतम् स्व-गृहम् वीरौ
'return to own home, O Valliant Ones!
कीर्ति:-वाम्-अस्तु पावनी
fame of You Both may be purifying
छन्दांसि-अयात-यामानि
the Vedas, ever fresh
भवन्तु-इह परत्र च
may be (to You) here, and beyond'
O Valliant Ones! Return to Your home! May the fame of You both be purifying. May the Vedas be ever fresh in Your minds, here and beyond.'
गुरुणैवमनुज्ञातौ रथेनानिलरंहसा ।
आयातौ स्वपुरं तात पर्जन्यनिनदेन वै ॥४९॥
गुरुणा-एवम्-अनुज्ञातौ
by the preceptor, thus permitted,
रथेन-अनिल-रंहसा
by the chariot, of wind like speed,
आयातौ स्व-पुरम् तात
came to own city, O Dear!
पर्जन्य-निनदेन वै
clouds rumbling, indeed
O Dear! Thus permitted by the preceptor, They came back to Their city, in the chariot with a wind like speed and indeed, rumbling like the clouds.
समनन्दन् प्रजा: सर्वा दृष्ट्वा रामजनार्दनौ ।
अपश्यन्त्यो बह्वहानि नष्टलब्धधना इव ॥५०॥
समनन्दन् प्रजा: सर्वा:
rejoiced the public all,
दृष्ट्वा राम-जनार्दनौ
seeing Balaraama and Krishna
अपश्यन्त्य: बहु-अहानि
not having seen for many days,
नष्ट-लब्ध-धना इव
lost and found wealth like
All the people rejoiced on seeing Balaraama and Janaardana, Krishna. They, having not seen Them for many days, were like a person who finds his lost wealth.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे गुरुपुत्रानयनं नाम पञ्चचत्वारिंश: अध्याय: ॥४५॥
Thus ends the forty-fifth discourse entitled 'The Lord brings back His preceptor's son (from the abode of Death),' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
