श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं चर्चितसङ्कल्पो भगवान् मधुसूदन ।

आससादाथ चाणूरं मुष्टिकं रोहिणीसुत: ॥१॥


एवम् चर्चित-सङ्कल्प:
thus, challenged, determined,
भगवान् मधुसूदन
The Lord Madhusoodana,
आससाद-अथ चाणूरम्
faced, then, Chanoora,
मुष्टिकम् रोहिणी-सुत:
Mushtika Rohinee's son

Thus challenged, The Lord Madhusoodana, with resolution, faced Chanoora, and Rohinee's son Balaraama faced Mushtika.


हस्ताभ्यां हस्तयोर्बद्ध्वा पद्भ्यामेव च पादयो: ।

विचकर्षतुरन्योन्यं प्रसह्य विजिगीषया ॥२॥


हस्ताभ्याम् हस्तयो:-बद्ध्वा
by two hands the two hands interlocking
पद्भ्याम्-एव च पादयो:
by two feet only, and the two feet
विचकर्षतु:-अन्योन्यम्
pulled each other
प्रसह्य विजिगीषया
forcefully intending to win

By Their two hands, their two hands, and with the legs their legs, interlocking, they pulled each other forcefully, with the intension to win.


अरत्नी द्वे अरत्निभ्यां जानुभ्यां चैव जानुनी ।

शिर: शीर्ष्णोरसोरस्तावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतु: ॥३॥


अरत्नी द्वे अरत्निभ्याम्
elbows both with the two elbows,
जानुभ्याम् च-एव जानुनी
knees, by the two knees,
शिर: शीष्णा-उरस:-उर:-तौ-
head with the heads, with chest the chest, They both
अन्योन्यम्-अभिजघ्नतु:
each other hit

They violently hit each other, with the two elbows the elbows, the two knees with the knees, the head with the heads, and the chest with the chest.


परिभ्रामणविक्षेपपरिरम्भावपातनै: ।

उत्सर्पणापसर्पणैश्चान्योन्यं प्रत्यरुन्धताम् ॥४॥


परिभ्रामण-विक्षेप-
by revolving, pushing,
परिरम्भ-अवपातनै:
squeezing, throwing down,
उत्सर्पण-अपसर्पणै:-च-
slipping and slipping out and
अन्योन्यम् प्रत्यरुन्धताम्
each other fought

They fought each other by revolving, pushing, squeezing in arms, throwing down, slipping away and slipping out of each others grip.


उत्थापनैरुन्नयनैश्चालनै: स्थापनैरपि ।

परस्परं जिगीषन्तावपचक्रतुरात्मन: ॥५॥


उत्थापनै:-उन्नयनै:-
by lifting up, carrying,
चालनै: स्थापनै:-अपि
dragging, making stand also
परस्परम् जिगीषन्तौ-
each other eager to win over
अपचक्रतु:-आत्मन:
hurt the bodies

Eager to win over, they lifted up, carried, dragged, made to stand, and hurt the bodies of Their rivals.


तद् बलाबलवद्युद्धं समेता: सर्वयोषित: ।

ऊचु: परस्परं राजन् सानुकम्पा वरूथश: ॥६॥


तत् बल-अबल-वत्-युद्धम्
that, the mighty and unmighty like encounter,
समेता: सर्व-योषित:
(seeing) the assembled all women
ऊचु: परस्परम् राजन्
said to each other, O King!
स-अनुकम्पा: वरूथश:
full of compassion, in groups

O King! All the women gathered there, were full of compassion, and in groups, said to each other, when they saw the encounter of the mighty with the unmighty.


महानयं बताधर्म एषां राजसभासदाम् ।

ये बलाबलवद्युद्धं राज्ञोऽन्विच्छन्ति पश्यत: ॥७॥


महान्-अयम् बत-अधर्म
great this certainly is unrighteousness,
एषाम् राज-सभासदाम्
of these royal courtiers,
ये बल-अबलवत्-युद्धम्
who, of the mighty and unmighty combat
राज्ञ:-अन्विच्छन्ति पश्यत:
as the king, supports, looks on

'Alas! Certainly, this is great unrighteousness of the royal courtiers, in that they are supporting a contest between the mighty and the weak, even as the king looks on.'


क्व वज्रसारसर्वाङ्गौ मल्लौ शैलेन्द्रसन्निभौ ।

क्व चातिसुकुमाराङ्गौ किशोरौ नाप्तयौवनौ ॥८॥


क्व वज्र-सार-सर्व-अङ्गौ
where thunderbolt like all limbed
मल्लौ शैल-इन्द्र-सन्निभौ
the two wrestlers, large mountain like
क्व च-अति-सुकुमार-अङ्गौ
where and very delicate bodied
किशोरौ न-आप्त-यौवनौ
lads, not attained youth

'There can be no comparison between the two wrestlers with thunderbolt like limbs like the great mountains, and the two Lads with very delicate bodies Who have not attained youth yet.'


धर्मव्यतिक्रमो ह्यस्य समाजस्य ध्रुवं भवेत् ।

यत्राधर्म: समुत्तिष्ठेन्न स्थेयं तत्र कर्हिचित् ॥९॥


धर्म-व्यतिक्रम: हि-अस्य
religious merit is forfeited, indeed of this,
समाजस्य ध्रुवम् भवेत्
assembly sure will be
यत्-अधर्म: समुत्तिष्ठेत्-
in that unrighteousness prevails,
न स्थेयम् तत्र कर्हिचित्
not should stay there at all

Surely there will be the forfeiting of religious merit, indeed, in this assembly. One should not stay there, where unrighteousness prevails.


न सभां प्रविशेत् प्राज्ञ: सभ्यदोषाननुस्मरन् ।

अब्रुवन् विब्रुवन्नज्ञो नर: किल्विषमश्नुते ॥१०॥


न सभाम् प्रविशेत् प्राज्ञ:
not the assembly should enter the wise,
सभ्य-दोषान्-अनुस्मरन्
of the assembly members faults knowing
अब्रुवन् विब्रुवन्-अज्ञ:
on not speaking, on speaking, on being indifferent,
नर: किल्विषम्-अश्नुते
a man sin incurs

The wise should not enter such an assembly, knowing the faults of the assembly people. Because, on saying, on not saying anything or on being indifferent, a man incurs sin.


वल्गत: शत्रुमभित: कृष्णस्य वदनाम्बुजम् ।

वीक्ष्यतां श्रमवार्युप्तं पद्मकोशमिवाम्बुभि: ॥११॥


वल्गत: शत्रुम्-अभित:
bouncing of the enemy around
कृष्णस्य वदन-अम्बुजम्
Krishna's face lotus
वीक्ष्यताम् श्रम-वारि-उप्तम्
do notice, by perspiration dripping,
पद्म-कोशम्-इव-अम्बुभि:
lotus bud like water drops

Notice the lotus face of Krishna, as He bounces around the rival, dripping as it is with perspiration, just as a lotus bud is covered with drops of water.


किं न पश्यत रामस्य मुखमाताम्रलोचनम् ।

मुष्टिकं प्रति सामर्षं हाससंरम्भशोभितम् ॥१२॥


किम् न पश्यत रामस्य
don't you see Balaraama's
मुखम्-आताम्र-लोचनम्
face (with) copper like eyes
मुष्टिकम् प्रति स-अमर्षम्
Mushtika towards, with wrath
हास-संरम्भ-शोभितम्
sly smile and enmity enlivened with

Don’t you see the face of Balaraama with His copper like eyes, enlivened with a sly smile and full of enmity and wrath, towards Mushtika.


पुण्या बत व्रजभुवो यदयं नृलिङ्गगूढ: पुराणपुरुषो वनचित्रमाल्य: ।

गा: पालयन् सहबल: क्वणयंश्च वेणुं विक्रीडयाञ्चति गिरित्ररमार्चिताङ्घ्रि: ॥१३॥


पुण्या बत व्रज-भुव:
holy certainly is Vraja land
यत्-अयम् नृ-लिङ्ग-गूढ:
that this man form disguised
पुराण-पुरुष: वन-चित्र-माल्य:
The Ancient Person, sylvan various garlands adorned
गा: पालयन् सह-बल:
cows tending with Balaraama
क्वणयन्-च-वेणुम्
playing the flute,
विक्रीडया-अञ्चति गिरित्र-
playfully marks by Shiva
रमा-अर्चित-अङ्घ्रि:
and Ramaa worshipped feet

This land of Vraja is certainly holy, in that, This Ancient Person in the guise of a man form, adorned with garlands of various sylvan flowers, tends the cows along with Balaraama, as He plays on the flute, and leaves the marks of His feet, which are worshipped by Shiva and Ramaa.


गोप्यस्तप: किमचरन् यदमुष्य रूपं लावण्यसारमसमोर्ध्वमनन्यसिद्धम् ।

दृग्भि: पिबन्त्यनुसवाभिनवं दुरापमेकान्तधाम यशस: श्रिय ऐश्वरस्य ॥१४॥


गोप्य:-तप: किम्-अचरन्
the Gopis austerities which practiced,
यत्-अमुष्य रूपम् लावण्य-
that, His comeliness, elegance
सारम्-असम-ऊर्ध्वम्-
essence, unequalled, unsurpassed
अनन्य-सिद्धम्
by anyone attainable
दृग्भि: पिबन्ति-
by the eyes imbibing,
अनुसव-अभिनवम्
every moment new,
दुरापम्-एकान्त-धाम
unattainable, the singular abode
यशस: श्रिय: ऐश्वरस्य
of fame, fortune and divine glory

What austerities did the Gopis practice, that they imbibe with their eyes, the essence of His unequalled and unsurpassed comeliness and elegance, unattainable by anyone, which is new every moment, and which is the singular abode of fame, fortune and divine glory.


या दोहनेऽवहनने मथनोपलेपप्रेङ्खेङ्खनार्भरुदितोक्षणमार्जनादौ ।

गायन्ति चैनमनुरक्तधियोऽश्रुकण्ठ्यो धन्या व्रजस्त्रिय उरुक्रमचित्तयाना: ॥१५॥


या दोहने-अवहनने
who, when mulching, pounding,
मथन-उपलेप प्रेङ्ख-ईङ्खन-
churning, plastering, the cradle swinging,
अर्भ-रुदित-उक्षण-मार्जन-आदौ
the child crying consoling, cleaning and other (activities)
गायन्ति च-एनम्-अनुरक्त-धिय:-
sing and of Him, with love fulfilled hearts,
अश्रु-कण्ठ्य: धन्या: व्रज-स्त्रिय:
chocked throats, blessed are the Vraja women
उरुक्रम-चित्तयाना:
of The big strides, Vishnu's, thoughts inspired by

The women of Vraja are blessed, as they keep singing His glory when they are milking the cows, pounding the corn, plastering the house, lulling the child, rocking the cradle, and cleaning and sweeping, with their hearts full of love for Him and their voices choked. All their activities are inspired by the thought of The Lord of big strides, Vishnu, Krishna.


प्रातर्व्रजाद् व्रजत आविशतश्च सायं गोभि: समं क्वणयतोऽस्य निशम्य वेणुम् ।

निर्गम्य तूर्णमबला: पथि भूरिपुण्या: पश्यन्ति सस्मितमुखं सदयावलोकम् ॥१६॥


प्रात:-व्रजात् व्रजत
in the morning from Vraja embarking,
आविशत:-च-सायम्
returning and in the evening
गोभि: समम् क्वणयत:
the cows with, playing
अस्य निशम्य वेणुम्
His hearing the flute
निर्गम्य तूर्णम्-अबला: पथि
coming out quickly, the women on the road,
भूरि-पुण्या: पश्यन्ति
highly blessed, see
सस्मित-मुखम्
(His) smiling face
सदया-अवलोकम्
with kind glances

The highly blessed women of Vraja get to see Him, when He goes from Vraja in the morning, and when He returns in the evening with the cows, playing on the flute, hearing which they quickly come out on the road and see His smiling face with kind glances.


एवं प्रभाषमाणासु स्त्रीषु योगेश्वरो हरि: ।

शत्रुं हन्तुं मनश्चक्रे भगवान् भरतर्षभ ॥१७॥


एवम् प्रभाषमाणासु स्त्रीषु
thus, as conversed, the women,
योगेश्व: हरि:
The Master of Yoga, Shree Hari
शत्रुम् हन्तुम् मन:-चक्रे
the enemy to kill mind made up
भगवान् भरतर्षभ
The Lord, O Scion of the Bharata race!

O Scion of the Bharata race! As the women talked thus, The Lord Shree Hari, The Master of Yoga, made up His mind to kill the enemy.


सभया: स्त्रीगिर: श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्नेहशुचाऽऽतुरौ ।

पितरावन्वतप्येतां पुत्रयोरबुधौ बलम् ॥१८॥


सभया: स्त्री-गिर: श्रुत्वा
apprehension filled women's words hearing,
पुत्र-स्नेह-शुच-आतुरौ
son's affection and sorrow anxious
पितरौ-अन्वतप्येताम्
parents were remorseful
पुत्रयो:-अबुधौ बलम्
of the two sons' not knowing the strength

The parents heard the words of the women full of apprehension, and they were overwhelmed with affection for Them and were full of remorse, as they did not know the strength of their Sons.


तैस्तैर्नियुद्धविधिभिर्विविधैरच्युतेतरौ ।

युयुधाते यथान्योन्यं तथैव बलमुष्टिकौ ॥१९॥


तै:-तै:-नियुद्ध-विधिभि:-
by all those, wrestling techniques
विविधै:-अच्युत-इतरौ
various, The Immortal, and the other (Chaanoora)
युयुधाते यथा-अन्योन्यम्
contested, just as, each other,
तथा-एव बल-मुष्टिकौ
like that only Balaraama and Mushtika (contested)

The Immortal Lord Krishna and His rival Chanoora contested with each other with various modes of wrestling, and so did Balaraama and Mushtika.


भगवद्गात्रनिष्पातैर्वज्रनिष्पेषनिष्ठुरै: ।

चाणूरो भज्यमानाङ्गो मुहुर्ग्लानिमवाप ह ॥२०॥


भगवत्-गात्र-निष्पातै:-
by The Lord's body's hits
वज्र-निष्पेष-निष्ठुरै:
thunderbolt nails like hard
चाणूर: भज्यमान-अङ्ग:
Chanoora with broken limbs
मुहु:-ग्लानिम्-अवाप ह
again and again faintness got indeed

It is said that by the hits of The Lord's limbs, hard like the strokes of thunderbolt, Chanoora's limbs broke and he fainted again and again.


स श्येनवेग उत्पत्य मुष्टीकृत्य करावुभौ ।

भगवन्तं वासुदेवं क्रुद्धो वक्षस्यबाधत ॥२१॥


स: श्येन-वेग उत्पत्य
he, hawk like speed charging
मुष्टी-कृत्य करौ-उभौ
fists making hands both
भगवन्तम् वासुदेवम्
Lord Vaasudeva
क्रुद्ध: वक्षसि-अबाधत
enraged, on the chest hit

He, enraged, making fists of both hands, with hawk like speed charging, hit Lord Vaasudeva on the chest.


नाचलत्तत्प्रहारेण मालाहत इव द्विप: ।

बाह्वोर्निगृह्य चाणूरं बहुशो भ्रामयन् हरि: ॥२२॥


न-अचलत्-तत्-प्रहारेण
did not move by that strike
माला-हत इव द्विप:
by a garland hit like elephant
बाह्वो:-निगृह्य चाणूरम्
by the arms catching hold of Chanoora,
बहुश: भ्रामयन् हरि:
many times swirled Shree Hari

Shree Hari did not move by that strike of Chaanoora, just as an elephant hit by a garland. The Lord then, caught hold of Chanoora by the arms and swirled him many times.


भूपृष्ठे पोथयामास तरसा क्षीणजीवितम् ।

विस्रस्ताकल्पकेशस्रगिन्द्रध्वज इवापतत् ॥२३॥


भू-पृष्ठे पोथयामास
on the ground dashed
तरसा क्षीण-जीवितम्
quickly, (him) with fading life
विस्रस्त-आकल्प-केश-स्रक्-
with dishevelled ornaments, hair and garlands
इन्द्र-ध्वज इव-आपतत्
Indra's emblem on the flag like fell

Quickly He dashed him on the ground, whose life was fading away and whose ornaments hair and garlands were all dishevelled. He, Chaanoora, fell like the thunderbolt, like the emblem of lightning on Indra's flag.


तथैव मुष्टिक: पूर्वं स्वमुष्ट्याभिहतेन वै ।

बलभद्रेण बलिना तलेनाभिहतो भृशम् ॥२४॥


तथा-एव मुष्टिक: पूर्वम्
like that only, Mushtika, first
स्व-मुष्ट्या-अभिहतेन वै
by his fist hit indeed,
बलभद्रेण बलिना
by Balaraama, the mighty
तलेन-अभिहत: भृशम्
was slapped violently

Likewise, first Mushtika had hit with his own fist, then, he was violently slapped by the mighty Balaraama.


प्रवेपित: स रुधिरमुद्वमन् मुखतोऽर्दित: ।

व्यसु: पपातोर्व्युपस्थे वाताहत इवाङ्घ्रिप: ॥२५॥


प्रवेपित: स: रुधिरम्-
shivering he, blood
उद्वमन् मुखत:-अर्दित:
vomiting from mouth, sore afflicted,
व्यसु: पपात-उर्वी-उपस्थे
lifeless fell on the ground's lap
वात-आहत इव-अङ्घ्रिप:
by the wind like struck tree

Shivering violently and vomiting blood from the mouth he was sore afflicted and fell down in the lap of the earth, like a tree struck by the wind.


तत: कूटमनुप्राप्तं राम: प्रहरतां वर: ।

अवधील्लीलया राजन् सावज्ञं वाममुष्टिना ॥२६॥


तत: कूटम्-अनुप्राप्तम्
then Koota coming
राम: प्रहरताम् वर:
Balaraama, among the wrestlers the best,
अवधीत्-लीलया राजन्
slew playfully, O King!
स-अवज्ञम् वाम-मुष्टिना
He scornfully with (His) left fist

O King! Then, Koota, the next wrestler who had come, was scornfully and play fully slewed by the best of the wrestlers, Balaraama, by His left fist.


तर्ह्येव हि शल: कृष्णपदापहतशीर्षक: ।

द्विधा विदीर्णस्तोशलक उभावपि निपेततु: ॥२७॥


तर्हि-एव हि शल:
right then, only indeed Shala,
कृष्ण-पदा-अपहत-शीर्षक:
by Krishna foot hit on the head,
द्विधा विदीर्ण:-तोशलक:
(and) into two split Toshalaka
उभौ-अपि निपेततु:
both only fell down (dead)

Right then only, indeed another wrestler, Shala, was hit on the head by Shree Krishna, and yet another Toshalaka was split into two. Both of them fell down dead.


चाणूरे मुष्टिके कूटे शले तोशलके हते ।

शेषा: प्रदुद्रुवुर्मल्ला: सर्वे प्राणपरीप्सव: ॥२८॥


चाणूरे मुष्टिके कूटे
Chaanoora, Mushtika, Koota,
शले तोशलके हते
Shala, Toshalaka being killed
शेषा: प्रदुद्रुवु:-मल्ला:
the remaining fled wrestlers
सर्वे प्राण-परीप्सव:
all life to save anxious

Chaanoora, Mushtika, Koota, Shala, Toshalaka being killed, the remaining wrestlers fled, all of them anxious to save their lives.


गोपान् वयस्यानाकृष्य तै: संसृज्य विजह्रतु: ।

वाद्यमानेषु तूर्येषु वल्गन्तौ रुतनूपुरौ ॥२९॥


गोपान् वयस्यान्-आकृष्य
the cowherds of own age, pulling,
तै: संसृज्य विजह्रतु:
with them along with to play
वाद्यमानेषु तूर्येषु
with the sounds of the trumpets,
वल्गन्तौ रुत-नूपुरौ
tuning the tinkling of the anklets

Then, pulling the cowherds of Their Own age, wanting to play with them, they kept in tune the sound of their anklets with the sound of the trumpets.


जना: प्रजहृषु: सर्वे कर्मणा रामकृष्णयो: ।

ऋते कंसं विप्रमुख्या: साधव: साधु साध्विति ॥३०॥


जना: प्रजहृषु: सर्वे
people rejoiced, all
कर्मणा राम-कृष्णयो:
by the deeds of Balaraama and Krishna,
ऋते कंसम् विप्र-मुख्या:
except Kansa, the Brahmanas prominent,
साधव: साधु साधु-इति
and the noble men, 'Well done! Well done!' (saying)

All the people rejoiced at all the deeds of Balaraama and Krishna, except for Kansa. All the noble men and the prominent Braahmanas said 'Well done! Well done' thus.


हतेषु मल्लवर्येषु विद्रुतेषु च भोजराट् ।

न्यवारयत् स्वतूर्याणि वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥३१॥


हतेषु मल्ल-वर्येषु
on being killed the wrestlers prominent
विद्रुतेषु च भोजराट्
and (others) having fled, the Bhoja king
न्यवारयत् स्व-तूर्याणि
stopped his trumpets
वाक्यम् च-इदम्-उवाच ह
words and these spoke, it is said

On the prominent wrestlers having been killed, and the others having fled, the Bhoja king, Kansa, stopped his trumpets, and it is said that he spoke these words,….


नि:सारयत दुर्वृतौ वसुदेवात्मजौ पुरात् ।

धनं हरत गोपानां नन्दं बध्नीत दुर्मतिम् ॥३२॥


नि:सारयत दुर्वृतौ
expel the ill-behaved
वसुदेव-आत्मजौ पुरात्
Vasudeva's two sons, from the city
धनम् हरत गोपानाम्
wealth confiscate of the Gopas,
नन्दम् बध्नीत दुर्मतिम्
Nanda put in bondage, the ill-minded

'Expel the two misbehaved sons of Vasudeva from the city, confiscate the wealth of the Gopas, and put in bondage the ill-minded Nanda.'


वसुदेवस्तु दुर्मेधा हन्यतामाश्वसत्तम: ।

उग्रसेन: पिता चापि सानुग: परपक्षग: ॥३३॥


वसुदेव:-तु दुर्मेधा:
Vasudeva indeed ill-minded,
हन्यताम्-आशु-असत्तम:
kill soon, the unvirtuous,
उग्रसेन: पिता च-अपि
Ugrasena father and also
सानुग: पर-पक्ष-ग:
with the followers other side supporting

'Kill the unvirtuous ill-minded Vasudeva soon, and my father Ugrasena along with his followers, who supports the other side.'


एवं विकत्थमाने वै कंस प्रकुपितोऽव्यय: ।

लघिम्नोत्पत्य तरसा मञ्चमुत्तुङमारुहत् ॥३४॥


एवम् विकत्थमाने वै
thus saying as
कंसे प्रकुपित:-अव्यय:
was Kansa, enraged The Eternal Lord
लघिम्ना-उत्पत्य तरसा
in a short leap, quickly
मञ्चम्-उत्तुङम्-आरुहत्
the dais high ascended

Just as Kansa was saying so, The Eternal Lord Krishna, was enraged and quickly with a short leap ascended the high dais.


तमाविशन्तमालोक्य मृत्युमात्मन आसनात् ।

मनस्वी सहसोत्थाय जगृहे सोऽसिचर्मणी ॥३५॥


तम्-आविशन्तम्-आलोक्य
Him, entering seeing,
मृत्युम्-आत्मन: आसनात्
death of himself, from his seat
मनस्वी सहसा-उत्थाय
the hero suddenly getting up,
जगृहे स:-असि-चर्मणी
snatched he the sword and shield

The heroic Kansa, seeing Krishna approaching, as if his death itself, suddenly got up from his seat and snatched his sword and shield.


तं खड्गपाणिं विचरन्तमाशु श्येनं यथा दक्षिणसव्यमम्बरे ।


समग्रहीद् दुर्विषहोग्रतेजा यथोरगं तार्क्ष्यसुत: प्रसह्य ||36||

तम् खड्ग-पाणिम् विचरन्तम्-
him, sword in hand, moving
आशु श्येनम् यथा
quickly, a hawk like
दक्षिण-सव्यम्-अम्बरे
left and right in the sky
समग्रहीत् दुर्विषह-उग्रतेजा
caught hold of the formidable with high speed
यथा-उरगम्
like a snake
तार्क्ष्य-सुत: प्रसह्य
Taarkshy's son (Gaduda) terrible

The Lord with formidable energy and high speed, quickly caught hold of him who like a hawk was moving left and right, just like Taarkshy's son Gaduda would catch hold of the snake.


प्रगृह्य केशेषु चलत्किरीटं निपात्य रङ्गोपरि तुङ्गमञ्चात् ।

तस्योपरिष्टात् स्वयमब्जनाभ: पपात विश्वाश्रय आत्मतन्त्र: ॥३७॥


प्रगृह्य केशेषु चलत्-
grasping by the hair, slipping away
किरीटम् निपात्य
the crown flung,
रङ्ग-उपरि तुङ्ग-मञ्चात्
in the arena from the high dais
तस्य-उपरिष्टात् स्वयम्-
on him, above, Himself
अब्जनाभ: पपात
the Lotus navel, jumped,
विश्वाश्रय: आत्म-तन्त्र:
of the universe, The Support, Self-dependent

The Self-dependent, Lotus naveled Lord, The Support of the universe, grasped him by the hair, his crown slipping away, and flung him on the floor of the arena from the high dais, and Himself jumped upon him.


तं सम्परेतं विचकर्ष भूमौ हरिर्यथेभं जगतो विपश्यत: ।

हाहेति शब्द: सुमहांस्तदाभूदुदीरित: सर्वजनैर्नरेन्द्र ॥३८॥


तम् सम्परेतम् विचकर्ष भूमौ
him, dead, dragging on the floor
हरि:-यथा-इभम्
lion like an elephant,
जगत: विपश्यत:
as the world looked on
हाहा-इति शब्द: सुमहान्-
'Alas! Alas!' thus word, in high pitch
तदा-अभूत्-उदीरित: सर्व-जनै:-
then was, uttered by all people
नरेन्द्र
O King!

O King! Krishna dragged the dead Kansa, as a lion would drag an elephant, even as the world looked on. "Alas! Alas!" In a high pitch was then uttered by the people, rent the air.


स नित्यदोद्विग्नधिया तमीश्वरं पिबन् वदन् वा विचरन् स्वपञ्छ्वसन् ।

ददर्श चक्रायुधमग्रतो यतस्तदेव रूपं दुरवापमाप ॥३९॥


स: नित्यदा-उद्विग्न-धिया
he, every day, with a dismayed mind
तम्-ईश्वरम् पिबन् वदन्
Him The Lord, (while) drinking, speaking
वा विचरन् स्वपन्-श्वसन्
or roaming, sleeping breathing
ददर्श चक्रायुधम्-अग्रत: य:-
saw discus in hand, in front, who,
तत्-एव रूपम् दुरवापम्-आप
that only form, difficult to attain, attained

He, who, every day, while drinking, talking, roaming, sleeping, breathing, saw in front of him, The form of The Lord with discus in hand. That form difficult to attain, he attained.


तस्यानुजा भ्रातरोऽष्टौ कङ्कन्यग्रोधकादय: ।

अभ्यधावन्नभिक्रुद्धा भ्रातुर्निर्वेशकारिण: ॥४०॥


तस्य-अनुजा: भ्रातर:-अष्टौ
his younger brothers, eight
कङ्क-न्यग्रोधक-आदय:
Kanka, Nyagrodhaka and others
अभ्यधावन्-अभिक्रुद्धा:
rushed enraged
भ्रातु:-निर्वेश-कारिण:
brother to avenge death

His eight younger brothers, Kanka, Nyagrodhaka and others, were enraged and rushed to avenge his death.


तथातिरभसांस्तांस्तु संयत्तान् रोहिणीसुत: ।

अहन् परिघमुद्यम्य पशूनिव मृगाधिप: ॥४१॥


तथा-अति-रभसान्-तान्-तु
like that in great speed, them indeed
संयत्तान् रोहिणी-सुत:
eager to fight, Rohinee's son (Balaraama)
अहन् परिघम्-उद्यम्य
killed bludgeon taking up
पशून्-इव मृग-अधिप:
the animals like the animal king, lion

Them, who approached in great speed, eager to fight, Rohinee's son Balaraama taking up a bludgeon, killed, like the animals' king lion would kill the animals.


नेदुर्दुन्दुभयो व्योम्नि ब्रह्मेशाद्या विभूतय: ।

पुष्पै: किरन्तस्तं प्रीता: शशंसुर्ननृतु: स्त्रिय: ॥४२॥


नेदु:-दुन्दुभय: व्योम्नि
sounded the trumpets, in the skies
ब्रह्म-ईश-आद्या: विभूतय:
Brahmaa, Lord Shiva and other divine glories,
पुष्पै: किरन्त:-तम् प्रीता:
with flowers showered, him delightfully
शशंसु:-ननृतु: स्त्रिय:
glorified, danced the women

Brahmaa, Lord Shiva and other divine glories, sounded the trumpets, in the skies, showered flowers on Him, and glorified Him with delight, as the celestial women danced in joy.


तेषां स्त्रियो महाराज सुहृन्मरणदु:खिता: ।

तत्राभीयुर्विघ्नन्त्य: शीर्षाण्यश्रुविलोचना: ॥४३॥


तेषाम् स्त्रिय: महाराज
their women, O Great king!
सुहृत्-मरण-दु:खिता:
by own peoples' death grieved
तत्र-अभीयु:-विघ्नन्त्य:
there came beating
शीर्षाणि-अश्रु-विलोचना:
the heads, tear filled eyes

O Great king! The women grieved by the death of their own men, came there, with eyes full of tears, and beating their heads.


शयानान् वीरशय्यायां पतीनालिङ्ग्य शोचती: ।

विलेपु: सुस्वरं नार्यो विसृजन्त्यो मुहु: शुच: ॥४४॥


शयानान् वीर-शय्यायाम्
lying on the heroes' bed, (the arena)
पतीन्-आलिङ्ग्य शोचती:
husbands embracing, lamenting
विलेपु: सुस्वरम् नार्य:
cried in high pitch, the women
विसृजन्त्य: मुहु: शुच:
shedding (tears), again and again grieved

They embraced their husbands lying on the bed for the heroes, the arena, cried in high pitch, lamenting and grieved, shed tears again and again.


हा नाथ प्रिय धर्मज्ञ करुणानाथवत्सल ।

त्वया हतेन निहता वयं ते सगृहप्रजा: ॥४५॥


हा नाथ प्रिय धर्मज्ञ
'O lord beloved! Knower of righteousness,
करुणानाथ-वत्सल
kind hearted, lover of the helpless,
त्वया हतेन निहता वयम्
by you being killed, are killed we,
ते स-गृह-प्रजा:
your along with house and progeny

'O lord, beloved! Knower of righteousness, kind hearted, lover of the helpless, by you being killed, we are killed, along with your house and progeny.


त्वया विरहिता पत्या पुरीयं पुरुषर्षभ ।

न शोभते वयमिव निवृत्तोत्सवमङ्गला ॥४६॥


त्वया विरहिता पत्या
you without, the master,
पुरि-इयम् पुरुर्षभ
city this, O jewel among men!
न शोभते वयम्-इव
Is not charming, we like,
निवृत्ता-उत्सव-मङ्गला
robbed of festivities and celebrations

'O jewel among men! Without you, the master, like us, this city is no longer charming, robbed as it is of its festivities and celebrations.'


अनागसां त्वं भूतानां कृतवान् द्रोहमुल्बणम् ।

तेनेमां भो दशां नीतो भूतध्रुक् को लभेत शम्॥४७॥


अनागसाम् त्वम् भूतानाम्
of the sinless, you, beings
कृतवान् द्रोहम्-उल्बणम्
did enmity grave
तेन-इमाम् भो दशाम् नीत:
by that, to this, O you! state are taken
भूत-ध्रुक् क: लभेत शम्
of living beings the oppressor, who attains peace

'O you! By holding grave enmity towards harmless living beings, you have attained this state. Which man, the oppressor of the living beings, attains peace?'


सर्वेषामिह भूतानामेष हि प्रभवाप्यय: ।

गोप्ता च तदवध्यायी न क्वचित् सुखमेधते ॥४८॥


सर्वेषाम्-इह भूतानाम्-
of all, here, of the living beings,
एष हि प्रभव-अप्यय:
He alone The Source, End,
गोप्ता च तत्-अवध्यायी
Protector and, That, the disrespectful
न क्वचित् सुखम्-एधते
will not anywhere happiness achieve

Here, of all the living beings, He alone is The Source, End and Protector. Him, whoever disrespects, will never achieve happiness.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
राजयोषित आश्वास्य भगवाँल्लोकभावन: ।

यामाहुर्लौकिकीं संस्थां हतानां समकारयत् ॥४९॥


राज-योषित: आश्वास्य
the royal women consoling,
भगवान्-लोक-भावन:
The Lord of world The Protector,
याम्-आहु:-लौकिकीम्
those which are said to be the worldly
संस्थाम् हतानाम् समकारयत्
rituals of the killed, got to be performed

The Lord, The Protector of the world, consoled the royal women, and for the killed, got the said to be rituals of the world, to be performed.


मातरं पितरं चैव मोचयित्वाथ बन्धनात् ।

कृष्णरामौ ववन्दाते शिरसाऽऽस्पृश्य पादयो: ॥५०॥


मातरम् पितरम् च-एव
mother father and also
मोचयित्वा-अथ बन्धनात्
released, then from bondage
कृष्ण-रामौ ववन्दाते
Krishna Balaraama bowed
शिरसा-आस्पृश्य पादयो:
with head touching (their) feet

Krishna and Balaraama, after that, released Their mother and father from the bondage, and bowed to them with Their heads touching their feet.


देवकी वसुदेवश्च विज्ञाय जगदीश्वरौ ।

कृतसंवन्दनौ पुत्रौ सस्वजाते न शङ्कितौ ॥५१॥


देवकी वसुदेव:-च
Devaki Vasudeva and
विज्ञाय जगत्-ईश्वरौ
knowing (Them to be) The World's Rulers,
कृत-संवन्दनौ पुत्रौ
having bowed, the two sons
सस्वजाते न शङ्कितौ
embraced, without doubt

Devaki and Vasudeva, knowing Them, Who had bowed to them, to be The Rulers of the worlds', without any doubt, did not embrace the two sons, afraid of showing Them disrespect.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे कंसवधो नाम चतुश्चत्वारिंश: अध्याय: ॥४४॥


Thus ends the forty-fourth discourse entitled 'Kansa slain (by The Lord),' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
