श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथ कृष्णश्च रामश्च कृतशौचौ परन्तप ।

मल्लदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं श्रुत्वा द्रष्टुमुपेयतु: ॥१॥


अथ कृष्ण:-च राम:-च
then, Krishna and Balaraama and,
कृत-शौचौ परन्तप
having bathed, O Chastiser of foes!
मल्ल-दुन्दुभि-निर्घोषम्
the wrestlers' trumpets loud noise
श्रुत्वा द्रष्टुम्-उपेयतु:
hearing, to see, went

O Chastiser of foes! then, Krishna and Balaraama having bathed, hearing the loud noise of the wrestlers' trumpets, went to see the tournament.


रङ्गद्वारं समासाद्य तस्मिन् नागमवस्थितम् ।

अपश्यत् कुवलयापीडं कृष्णोऽम्बष्ठप्रचोदितम् ॥२॥


रङ्ग-द्वारम् समासाद्य
the amphitheatre entrance approaching
तस्मिन् नागम्-अवस्थितम्
in that, the elephant stationed
अपश्यत् कुवलयापीडम्
saw Kuvalayaapeeda
कृष्ण:-अम्बष्ठ-प्रचोदितम्
Krishna, by the elephant trainer directed

As They approached the entrence of the amphitheatre, there Krishna saw the elephant Kuvalayaapeeda stationed as directed by it's trainer.


बद्ध्वा परिकर शौरि: समुह्य कुटिलालकान् ।

उवाच हस्तिपं वाचा मेघनादगभीरया ॥३॥


बद्ध्वा परिकर शौरि:
tying the waist band, The Scion of the Shauree',
समुह्य कुटिल-अलकान्
straightening the curly hair,
उवाच हस्तिपम् वाचा
said, to the trainer, in voice,
मेघ-नाद-गभीरया
clouds' sound like deep

The Scion of the Shauree', Krishna, tying the waist band and straightening the curly hair, in a voice, deep like the sound of the clouds, said to the trainer,….


अम्बष्ठाम्बष्ठ मार्गं नौ देह्यपक्रम मा चिरम् ।

नो चेत् सकुञ्जरम् त्वाद्य नयामि यमसादनम् ॥४॥


अम्बष्ठ-अम्बष्ठ मार्गम् नौ
'O Driver! Driver! way to us
देहि-अपक्रम मा चिरम्
give, move away without delay,
नो चेत् सकुञ्जरम् त्वा-
otherwise, with the elephant, you,
अद्य नयामि यम-सादनम्
today will reach to Yama's abode'

'O Driver! Driver! Give way to both of us, move away without delay, otherwise, I will reach you along with the elephant to Yama's abode, today.


एवं निर्भर्त्सितोऽम्बष्ठ: कुपित: कोपितं गजम् ।

चोदयामास कृष्णाय कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥५॥


एवं निर्भर्त्सित:-अम्बष्ठ:
thus rebuked, the driver,
कुपित: कोपितम् गजम्
enraged the wrathful elephant
चोदयामास कृष्णाय
goaded towards Krishna
काल-अन्तक यम-उपमम्
Time ravaged Yama like

Thus rebuked, the enraged driver, goaded the wrathful elephant towards Krishna, like the Time ravaging Yama.


करीन्द्रस्तमभिद्रुत्य करेण तरसाग्रहीत् ।

कराद् विगलित: सोऽमुं निहत्याङ्घ्रिष्वलीयत ॥६॥


करीन्द्र:-तम्-अभिद्रुत्य
the elephant king, Him attacking,
करेण तरसा-अग्रहीत्
by the trunk quickly caught,
कराद् विगलित: स:-अमुम्
from the trunk slipping, He, him
निहत्य-अङ्घ्रिषु-अवलीयत
hitting, and in the legs hid

The lordly elephant attacked Him and caught hold of Him by his trunk. Krishna slipped away from the trunk, and hitting him, hid Himself under his legs.


संक्रुद्धस्तमचक्षाणो घ्राणदृष्टि: स केशवम् ।

परामृशत् पुश्करेण स प्रसह्य विनिर्गत: ॥७॥


संक्रुद्ध:-तम्-अचक्षाण:
infuriated, Him, not seeing,
घ्राण-दृष्टि: स: केशवम्
by smell sense he, Keshava
परामृशत् पुश्करेण
caught hold of by the trunk
स: प्रसह्य विनिर्गत:
He, forcefully slipped away

Not seeing Him, the infuriated animal by his sense of smell, again caught hold of Him by the trunk. But, He again slipped away forcefully.


पुच्छे प्रगृह्यातिबलं धनुष: पञ्चविंशतिम् ।

विचकर्ष यथा नागं सुपर्ण इव लीलया ॥८॥


पुच्छे प्रगृह्य-अति-बलम्
the tail holding on, of the very strong,
धनुष: पञ्च-विंशतिम्
bows twenty-five
विचकर्ष यथा नागम्
dragged, like a cobra
सुपर्ण इव लीलया
a Gaduda would, sportingly

Holding on his tail, Krishna violently dragged the mighty elephant for a distance of twenty-five bows, like the Gaduda would sportingly drag a cobra.


स पर्यावर्तमानेन सव्यदक्षिणतोऽच्युत: ।

बभ्राम भ्राम्यमाणेन गोवत्सेनेव बालक: ॥९॥


स: पर्यावर्त-मानेन
He, pulling around
सव्य-दक्षिणत:-अच्युत:
to right and left, The Immortal
बभ्राम भ्राम्यमाणेन
pulled around, by the pulled around
गो-वत्सेन-इव बालक:
cow's calf, like, a boy

He pulled him around to the right and to the left, like a boy would pull around a cow's calf.


ततोऽभिमुखमभ्येत्य पाणिनाऽऽहत्य वारणम् ।

प्राद्रवन् पातयामास स्पृश्यमान: पदे पदे ॥१०॥


तत:-अभिमुखम्-अभ्येत्य
then in front coming,
पाणिना-आहत्य वारणम्
by the hand hitting the elephant
प्राद्रवन् पातयामास
while running, threw him
स्पृश्यमान: पदे पदे
touching on every step

Then, Krishna came in front of the elephant and hit him with His hand, as he ran after Krishna, Who wanted to throw him, it looked as if it touched Him on every step.


स धावन् क्रीडया भूमौ पतित्वा सहसोत्थित: ।

तं मत्वा पतितं क्रुद्धो दन्ताभ्यां सोऽहनत्क्षितिम् ॥११॥


स: धावन् क्रीडया भूमौ
He, while running, sportingly on the ground
पतित्वा सहसा-उत्थित:
fell and suddenly got up
तम् मत्वा पतितम् क्रुद्ध:
Him taking to be fallen, infuriated
दन्ताभ्याम् स:-अहनत्-क्षितिम्
by the two tusks he hit the earth

While He ran, sportingly He fell on the ground and then, got up suddenly. Taking Him to be fallen, the infuriated elephant hit the earth with his two tusks.


स्वविक्रमे प्रतिहते कुञ्जरेन्द्रोऽत्यमर्षित: ।

चोद्यमानो महामात्रै: कृष्णमभ्यद्रवद् रुषा ॥१२॥


स्व-विक्रमे प्रतिहते
own prowess nullified,
कुञ्जर-इन्द्र:-अति-अमर्षित:
the elephant king very enraged,
चोद्यमान: महामात्रै:
prodded by the great drivers
कृष्णम्-अभ्यद्रवत् रुषा
Krishna attacked in anger

The elephant king, with his prowess nullified, was very enraged, and prodded by the great drivers, attacked Krishna in anger.


तमापतन्तमासाद्य भगवान् मधुसूदन: ।

निगृह्य पाणिना हस्तं पातयामास भूतले ॥१३॥


तम्-आपतन्तम्-आसाद्य
him approaching, finding,
भगवान् मधुसूदन:
The Lord, Madhu's tormentor,
निगृह्य पाणिना हस्तम्
catching with hand, the trunk,
पातयामास भूतले
hurled on the ground

The Lord, The Tormentor of Madhu, finding him approaching, caught hold of him by the trunk, with His hand, and hurled him on the face of the ground.


पतितस्य पदाऽऽक्रम्य मृगेन्द्र इव लीलया ।

दन्तमुत्पाट्य तेनेभं हस्तिपांश्चाहनद् हरि: ॥१४॥


पतितस्य पदा-आक्रम्य
on the fallen, with feet treading,
मृगेन्द्र इव लीलया
lion like, sportingly,
दन्तम्-उत्पाट्य तेन-इभम्
the tusk pulling out, by that the elephant
हस्तिपान्-च-अहनत् हरि:
the drivers and killed Shree Hari

Shree Hari with His feet sportingly treaded on the fallen animal, like a lion, and then pulled out his tusk, and killed the elephant and the drivers with that.


मृतकं द्विपमुत्सृज्य दन्तपाणि: समाविशत् ।

अंसन्यस्तविषाणोऽसृङ्मदबिन्दुभिरङ्कित: ।

विरूढस्वेदकणिकावदनाम्बुरुहो बभौ ॥१५॥


मृतकम् द्विपम्-उत्सृज्य
dead elephant leaving,
दन्त-पाणि: समाविशत्
tusk in hand, entered
अंस-न्यस्त-विषाण-असृक्-
on the shoulder rested, marrow and blood
बिन्दुभि:-अङ्कित:
drops marked,
विरूढ-स्वेद-कणिका
coming out sweat drops,
वदन-अम्बुरुह: बभौ
face lotus became charming

He left the dead elephant behind and holding a tusk in the hand, which rested on His shoulder, He entered the arena. His face lotus was marked with the marrow and blood and the shining sweat drops made Him look charming.


वृतौ गोपै: कतिपयैर्बलदेवजनार्दनौ ।

रङ्गं विविशतू राजन् गजदन्तवरायुधौ ॥१६॥


वृतौ गोपै: कतिपयै:-
surrounded by the Gopas some,
बलदेव-जनार्दनौ
Baladeva and Janaardana (Krishna)
रङ्गम् विविशतु: राजन्
the amphitheatre entered, O King!
गज-दन्त-वर-आयुधौ
elephant tusk excellent weapon

O King! Baladeva and Janaardana (Krishna) surrounded by some Gopas, entered the amphitheatre, armed with the elephant tusks, as an excellent weapons.


मल्लानामशनिर्नृणां नरवर: स्त्रीणां स्मरो मूर्तिमान् ।

गोपानां स्वजनोऽसतां क्षितिभुजां शास्ता स्वपित्रो: शिशु: ॥

मृत्युर्भोजपतेर्विराडविदुषां तत्त्वं परं योगिनां ।

वृष्णीनां परदेवतेति विदितो रङ्गं गत: साग्रज: ॥१७॥


मल्लानाम्-अशनि:-
for the wrestlers, thunderbolt,
नृणाम् नर-वर:
for the men, the mens' jewel
स्त्रीणाम् स्मर: मूर्तिमान्
for the women, Cupid, personified
गोपानाम् स्व-जन:-
for the cowherds, kinsman,
असताम् क्षितिभुजाम् शास्ता
for the vile princes, the chastiser,
स्व-पित्रो: शिशु:
for own parents, a child,
मृत्यु:-भोज-पते:-
death for the Bhoja king,
विराट्-अविदुषाम्
colossal to the ignorant,
तत्त्वम् परम् योगिनाम्
the Reality Supreme for the Yogis,
वृष्णीनाम् परदेवता-इति
for the Vrishnees, the highest Divinity, thus
विदित: रङ्गम् गत:
appeared, in the amphitheatre entering
स-अग्रज:
with the elder Brother

He, Krishna, as He entered the amphitheatre with His elder Brother, appeared to the wrestlers like the thunderbolt, to the men, as the excellent man, to the women, love personified, to the cowherds, their kinsman, to the vile princes, the chastiser, to His own parents, a child, death for the Bhoja king, colossal to the ignorant, and the highest Divinity, to the Vrishnees.


हतं कुवलयापीडं दृष्ट्वा तावपि दुर्जयौ ।

कंसो मनस्व्यपि तदा भृशमुद्विविजे नृप ॥१८॥


हतम् कुवलयापीडम्
killed Kuvalayaapeeda,
दृष्ट्वा तौ-अपि दुर्जयौ
seeing Them also un-conquerable,
कंस: मनस्वी-अपि तदा
Kansa, self possessed, though, then,
भृशम्-उद्विविजे नृप
very much terrified was O King!

O King! though Kansa was self possessed, seeing Kuvalayaapeeda killed, and Both of The Brothers un-conquerable, he was then very much terrified.


तौ रेजतू रङ्गगतौ महाभुजौ विचित्रवेषाभरणस्रगम्बरौ ।

यथा नटावुत्तमवेषधारिणौ मन: क्षिपन्तौ प्रभया निरीक्षताम् ॥१९॥


तौ रेजतु: रङ्ग-गतौ महा-भुजौ
They both shone, in the amphitheatre, mighty armed,
विचित्र-वेष-आभरण स्रक्-अम्बरौ
in queer form, strange jewels, garlands and garments,
यथा नटौ-उत्तम-वेष-धारिणौ
like two actors, highly classic form adorned in
मन: क्षिपन्तौ प्रभया निरीक्षताम्
minds captivating by brilliance of the onlookers

In the amphitheatre, Both of Them shone with Their mighty arms, queer form, bedecked with strange jewels, garlands and ornaments, like two actors adorned in highly classic forms. They captivated the minds of the onlookers with Their brilliance.


निरीक्ष्य तावुत्तमपूरुषौ जना मञ्चस्थिता नागरराष्ट्रका नृप ।

प्रहर्षवेगोत्कलितेक्षणानना: पपुर्न तृप्ता नयनैस्तदाननम् ॥२०॥


निरीक्ष्य तौ-उत्तम-पूरुषौ
perceiving Those Supreme Persons
मञ्च-स्थिता:
on the galleries stationed
नागर-राष्ट्रका: नृप
the citizens and country men, O King!
प्रहर्ष-वेग-उत्कलित-
with an outburst blooming
ईक्षण-आनना: पपु:-न तृप्ता:
eyes and faces, drank, not satiated
नयनै:-तत्-आननम्
by the eyes that face

O King! The faces and the eyes of the citizens and the country men who were seated in the galleries, were blooming with the outburst of joy, on perceiving the Two Supreme Persons, and were not sated drinking the beauty of the faces with their eyes.


पिबन्त इव चक्षुर्भ्यां लिहन्त इव जिह्वया ।

जिघ्रन्त इव नासाभ्यां श्लिष्यन्त इव बाहुभि: ॥२१॥


पिबन्त: इव चक्षुर्भ्याम्
drinking like with the eyes,
लिहन्त: इव जिह्वया
licking like with the tongue
जिघ्रन्त: इव नासाभ्याम्
smelling like with the noses,
श्लिष्यन्त: इव बाहुभि:
embracing like with the arms

They seemed to be drinking them with their eyes, licking them with their tongue, smelling them with their noses, and embracing them with their arms.


ऊचु: परस्परं ते वै यथादृष्टं यथाश्रुतम् ।

तद्रूपगुणमाधुर्यप्रागल्भ्यस्मारिता इव ॥२२॥


ऊचु: परस्परम् ते वै
spoke to each other they, indeed
यथा-दृष्टम् यथा-श्रुतम्
as seen (and) as heard of
तत्-रूप-गुण-माधुर्य-
of that beauty, excellences, loving disposition
प्रागल्भ्य-स्मारिता इव
and intrepidity reminded as though

They spoke to each other, indeed, about what they had seen of them, and of what they had heard of Them, as though reminded of all that beauty, excellences, loving disposition and intrepidity by Their sight.


एतौ भगवत: साक्षाद्-हरेर्नारायणस्य हि ।

अवतीर्णाविहांशेन वसुदेवस्य वेश्मनि ॥२३॥


एतौ भगवत: साक्षात्-
They Both of The Lord, Himself,
हरे:-नारायणस्य हि
Shree Hari, of Naaraayana's indeed
अवतीर्णौ-इह-अंशेन
descended here, through a part,
वसुदेवस्य वेश्मनि
in Vasudeva's house

Both of Them, have indeed, as a part of The Lord Shree Hari, Naaraayana Himself, have descended here, in the house of Vasudeva.


एष वै किल देवक्यां जातो नीतश्च गोकुलम् ।

कालमेतं वसन् गूढो ववृधे नन्दवेश्मनि ॥२४॥


एष: वै किल देवक्याम्
This One, indeed, surely, from Devaki
जात: नीत:-च गोकुलम्
born, taken and to Gokula
कालम्-एतम् वसन्
time this living (there)
गूढ: ववृधे नन्द-वेश्मनि
secretly, grew up in Nanda's house

Indeed, This Younger One, surely was born from Devaki, and was taken to Gokula, where He grew up secretly in Nanda's house.


पूतनानेन नीतान्तं चक्रवातश्च दानव: ।

अर्जुनौ गुह्यक: केशी धेनुकोऽन्ये च तद्विधा: ॥२५॥


पूतना-अनेन नीता-अन्तम्
Pootanaa, by Him, was taken to her end
चक्रवात:-च दानव:
Trinaavarta, and the demon,
अर्जुनौ गुह्यक: केशी धेनुक:-
the two Arjuna trees, Shankhachooda, Keshi, Dhenuka,
अन्ये च तत्-विधा:
others and of that type

He put an end to Pootanaa, and the demon Trinaavarta, uprooted the two Arjuna trees, and He killed Shankhachooda, Keshi and Dhenuka, and others of their class.


गाव: सपाला एतेन दावाग्ने: परिमोचिता: ।

कालियो दमित: सर्प इन्द्रश्च विमद: कृत: ॥२६॥


गाव: सपाला: एतेन
the cows with their keepers, by Him
दावाग्ने: परिमोचिता:
from forest fire rescued
कालिय: दमित: सर्प:
Kaaliya was subdued, the snake,
इन्द्र:-च विमद: कृत:
Indra and pride-less rendered

By Him the cows and their keepers were rescued from the forest fire. The snake Kaaliya was subdued and Indra was made to give up his pride.


सप्ताहमेकहस्तेन धृतोऽद्रिप्रवरोऽमुना ।

वर्षवाताशनिभ्यश्च परित्रातं च गोकुलम् ॥२७॥


सप्ताहम्-एक-हस्तेन
for a week, by one hand
धृत:-अद्रि-प्रवर:-अमुना
was upheld the mountain chief, by Him,
वर्ष-वात-अशनिभ्य:-च
from rain, storm and lightening
परित्रातम् च गोकुलम्
protected and Gokula

By Him the chief of the mountains, Govardhana was upheld on one hand, for a week, and Gokula was protected from rain, storm and lightening.


गोप्योऽस्य नित्यमुदितहसितप्रेक्षणं मुखम् ।

पश्यन्त्यो विविधांस्तापांस्तरन्ति स्माश्रमं मुदा ॥२८॥


गोप्य:-अस्य नित्य-मुदित-
the Gopis, His always cheerful
हसित-प्रेक्षणम् मुखम्
smiling glances face
पश्यन्त्य: विविधान्-तापान्-
looking at, the various agonies
तरन्ति स्म-अश्रमम् मुदा
overcame without difficulty, happily

The Gopis looking at His always cheerful smiling face and glances, happily overcame their various agonies without difficulty.


वदन्त्यनेन वंशोऽयं यदो: सुबहुविश्रुत: ।

श्रियं यशो महत्त्वं च लप्स्यते परिरक्षित: ॥२९॥


वदन्ति-अनेन वंश:-अयम्
it is said, by Him, race this
यदो: सुबहुविश्रुत:
of the Yadus, will be very well-known
श्रियम् यश: महत्त्वम् च
prosperity, renown, glory and
लप्स्यते परिरक्षित:
will attain protected

It is said that protected by Him, this race of the Yadus will attain great fame, prosperity, renown and glory.


अयं चास्याग्रज: श्रीमान् राम: कमललोचन: ।

प्रलम्बो निहतो येन वत्सको ये बकादय: ॥३०॥


अयम् च-अस्य-अग्रज:
He and His elder Brother
श्रीमान् राम: कमल-लोचन:
glorious Balaraama, lotus eyed
प्रलम्ब: निहत: येन
Pralambaasura was killed, by Whom
वत्सक: ये बक-आदय:
Vatsaasura, those Bakaasura and others

He, and This, His elder Brother, the lotus eyed glorious Balaraama, Who killed Pralambaasura, and by Whom Vatsaasura and Bakaasura and others were killed.


जनेष्वेवं ब्रुवाणेषु तूर्येषु निनदत्सु च ।

कृष्णरामौ समाभाष्य चाणूरो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥३१॥


जनेषु-एवम् ब्रुवाणेषु
as the people thus said,
तूर्येषु निनदत्सु च
the trumpets were sounded and
कृष्ण-रामौ समाभाष्य
Krishna and Balaraama addressing
चाणूर: वाक्यम्-अब्रवीत्
Chaanoora words said

As the people were saying so, and the trumpets were being sounded, Chanoora accosted Krishna and Balaraama and said to Them thus,…


हे नन्दसूनो हे राम भवन्तौ वीर संमतौ ।

नियुद्धकुशलौ श्रुत्वा राज्ञाऽऽहूतौ दिदृक्षुणा ॥३२॥


हे नन्दसूनो हे राम
'O Nanda's darling Krishna, O Balaraama!
भवन्तौ वीर संमतौ
You Both are brave, esteemed to be
नियुद्ध-कुशलौ श्रुत्वा
in wrestling experts, on hearing,
राज्ञा-आहूतौ दिदृक्षुणा
by the king are invited, (who is) eager to see (You)

'O Nanda's darling Krishna, O Balaraama! Both of You are esteemed to be brave and experts in wrestling. Hearing this, and eager to see You, the king has invited You.'


प्रियं राज्ञ: प्रकुर्वन्त्य: श्रेयो विन्दन्ति वै प्रजा: ।

मनसा कर्मणा वाचा विपरीतमतोऽन्यथा ॥३३॥


प्रियम् राज्ञ: प्रकुर्वन्त्य:
agreeable to the king performing
श्रेय: विन्दन्ति वै प्रजा:
prosperity attain indeed the subjects
मनसा कर्मणा वाचा
mentally physically and in words,
विपरीतम्-अत:-अन्यथा
otherwise, then, the opposite

The subjects who mentally physically and verbally act according to the king's wishes, attain prosperity, while those acting other than this, get the opposite result.


नित्यं प्रमुदिता गोपा वत्सपाला यथा स्फुटम् ।

वनेषु मल्लयुद्धेन क्रीडन्तश्चारयन्ति गा: ॥३४॥


नित्यम् प्रमुदिता: गोपा:
always happy, the cowherds,
वत्सपाला: यथा स्फुटम्
from calf herds, as is true
वनेषु मल्लयुद्धेन
in the forests, by wrestling
क्रीडन्त:-चारयन्ति गा:
sporting, pasture the cows

It is true that from the time of being the calf herds, the cowherds, always happily pastured the cows in the forests, playing the game of wrestling for diversion.


तस्मात् राज्ञ: प्रियं यूयं वयं च करवामहे ।

भूतानि न: प्रसीदन्ति सर्वभूतमयो नृप: ॥३५॥


तस्मात् राज्ञ: प्रियम्
therefore of the king's, desire
यूयम् वयम् च करवामहे
You Both, us and will do
भूतानि न: प्रसीदन्ति
all beings with us will be pleased
सर्व-भूत-मय: नृप:
of all the beings is embodiment the king

Therefore, You both and we all must do as desired by the king. If the embodiment of all the beings, the kings is pleased, all the beings will be pleased.


तन्निशम्याब्रवीत् कृष्णो देशकालोचितं वच: ।

नियुद्धमात्मनोऽभीष्टं मन्यमानोऽभिनन्द्य च ॥३६॥


तत्-निशम्य-अब्रवीत् कृष्ण:
that hearing, said Krishna
देश-काल-उचितम् वच:
place time proper words
नियुद्धम्-आत्मन:-अभीष्टम्
wrestling own desire
मन्यमान:-अभिनन्द्य च
accepting, welcoming and

Krishna, hearing that, welcomed the words of Chaanoora, and accepting wrestling to be to His liking, said words proper to the time and place,...


प्रजा भोजपतेरस्य वयं चापि वनेचरा: ।

करवाम प्रियं नित्यं तन्न: परमनुग्रह: ॥३७॥


प्रजा भोजपते:-अस्य
subjects of the Bhoja king, this,
वयम् च-अपि वनेचरा:
we and also are forest dwellers
करवाम प्रियम् नित्यम्
will do the desired, always,
तत्-न: परम्-अनुग्रह:
that for us is the infinite grace

And, We the forest dwellers also are the subjects of the king of Bhoja. That we will always do his desired, is his infinite grace on us.


बाला वयं तुल्यबलै: क्रीडिष्यामो यथोचितम् ।

भवेन्नियुद्धं माधर्म: स्पृशेन्मल्ल सभासद: ॥३८॥


बाला: वयम् तुल्य-बलै:
youngsters we are, with equal in prowess
क्रीडिष्याम: यथा-उचितम्
will play as proper
भवेत्-नियुद्धम् मा-अधर्म:
may be in wrestling, may not sin
स्पृशेत्-मल्ल सभासद:
is attached, O Wrestler! To the spectators

'O Wrestler! We are youngsters, and will play with equals in prowess, as is proper. In wrestling, may no sin be attached to the spectators for watching an unequal combat.'


चाणूर उवाच -
Chaanoora said -
न बालो न किशोरस्त्वं बलश्च बलिनां वर: ।

लीलयेभो हतो येन सहस्रद्विपसत्त्वभृत् ॥३९॥


न बाल: न किशोर:-
not a lad, nor a youngster
त्वम् बल:-च बलिनाम् वर:
You and Balaraama of the mighty are the best
लीलया-इभ: हत:
in mere sport, the elephant was killed
येन सहस्र-द्विप सत्त्व-भृत्
by Whom, a thousand elephants' strength possessing

You and Balaraama, are neither lads nor youngsters, Who, in mere sport killed the elephant Kuvalayaapeeda, possessing the strength of a thousand elephants.


तस्माद् भवद्भ्यां बलिभिर्योद्धव्यं नानयोऽत्र वै ।

मयि विक्रम वार्ष्णेय बलेन सह मुष्टिक: ॥४०॥


तस्मात् भवद्भ्याम् बलिभि:-
therefore, with You Both with powerful
योद्धव्यम् न-अनय:-अत्र वै
should contend, no unrighteousness, in this, indeed,
मयि विक्रम वार्ष्णेय
in me (show) prowess, O Scion of the Vrishnees!
बलेन सह मुष्टिक:
Balaraama with Mushtika

'Therefore, Both of You should contend with powerful rivals. O scion of the Vrishnees! Show Your prowess with me, and let Balaraama contend with Mushtika.'


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे कुवलयपीडवध: नाम त्रिचत्वारिंश: अध्याय: ॥४३॥


Thus ends the forty-third discourse entitled 'The elephant Kuvalayaapeeda killed (by Shree Krishna),' in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
