श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
स गत्वा हास्तिनपुरं पौरवेन्द्रयशोऽङ्कितम् ।
ददर्श तत्राम्बिकेयं सभीष्मं विदुरं पृथाम् ॥१॥
स: गत्वा हास्तिनपुरम्
he, having gone to Hastinaapura
पौरवेन्द्र यश:-अङ्कितम्
by the Puru's kings' glory marked,
ददर्श तत्र-आम्बिकेयम्
saw there Ambika's son,
सभीष्मम् विदुरम् पृथाम्
with Bheeshma, Vidura and Prithaa
He, having gone to Hastinaapura, which is marked by the glory of the Puru kings, there, he saw Ambika's son, Dhritaraashtra, with Bheeshma, Vidura and Prithaa.
सहपुत्रं च बाह्लीकं भारद्वाजं सगौतमम् ।
कर्णं सुयोधनं द्रौणिं पाण्डवान् सुहृदोऽपरान् ॥२॥
सह-पुत्रम् च बाह्लीकम्
with the son and Baahleeka
भारद्वाजम् स-गौतमम्
Bharadvaajas son (Drona) with Gautama (Kripa)
कर्णम् सुयोधम् द्रौणिम्
Karna, Duryodhana, Drona's son (Ashwatthaamaa),
पाण्डवान् सुहृद:-अपरान्
the Paandavas, and friends others
And he met Baahleeka with his son, Bharadvaajas son (Drona), with Gautama (Kripa), Karna, Duryodhana, Drona's son (Ashwatthaamaa), the Paandavas, and other friends.
यथावदुपसङ्गम्य बन्धुभिर्गान्दिनीसुत: ।
सम्पृष्टस्तै: सुहृद्वार्तां स्वयं चापृच्छदव्ययम् ॥३॥
यथा-वत्-उपसङ्गम्य
as proper, meeting
बन्धुभि:-गान्दिनी-सुत:
with the friends, Gaandini's son, Akroora,
सम्पृष्ट:-तै: सुहृत्-वार्ताम्
was asked by them, of the friend's welfare
स्वयम् च-अपृच्छत्-अव्ययम्
himself and asked of (their) well-being
Gaandini's son Akroora met the friends as proper. He was asked by them of the welfare of the friends in Mathura, and he also enquired them of the well-being of the friends in Hastinaapura.
उवास कतिचिन्मासान् राज्ञो वृत्तविवित्सया ।
दुष्प्रजस्याल्पसारस्य खलच्छन्दानुवर्तिन: ॥४॥
उवास कतिचित्-मासान्
stayed for some months
राज्ञ: वृत्त-विवित्सया
of the kings' conduct to ascertain
दुष्प्रजस्य-अल्प-सारस्य
having evil sons, little moral strength
खल:-छन्द-अनुवर्तिन:
of the evil (peoples') advice follower
Akroora stayed there for some months to ascertain the conduct of the king with little moral strength, who had evil sons, and followed the advice of the vile people.
तेज ओजो बलं वीर्यं प्रश्रयादींश्च सद्गुणान् ।
प्रजानुरागं पार्थेषु न संहद्भिश्चिकीर्षितम् ॥५॥
तेज: ओज: बलम् वीर्यम्
majesty, military skill, physical strength,
प्रश्रय-आदीन्-च सत्-गुणान्
modesty, and other good qualities
प्रजा-अनुरागम् पार्थेषु
for the people compassion, of the Paandavas
न संहद्भि:-चिकीर्षितम्
not able to bear, conspired,…..
The majesty, military skill, physical strength, modesty, and compassion for the people, and other good qualities of the Paandavas, not able to digest, they conspired,….
कृतं च धार्तराष्ट्रैर्यद् गरदानाद्यपेशलम् ।
आचख्यौ सर्वमेवास्मै पृथा विदुर एव च ॥६॥
कृतम् च धार्तराष्ट्रै:-यत्
done and by Dhritraashtraa's sons, that
गर-दान-आदि-अपेशलम्
poison giving and other evil deeds
आचख्यौ सर्वम्-एव-अस्मै
said about all also to him
पृथा विदुर एव च
Kunti Vidura also and
Conspiracies and other evil deeds which were done by the sons of Dhritaraashtra, like giving poison etc., to the Paandavas, etc., were reported to him by Kunti and Vidura.
पृथा तु भ्रातरं प्राप्तमक्रूरमुपसृत्य तम् ।
उवाच जन्मनिलयं स्मरन्त्यश्रुकलेक्षणा ॥७॥
पृथा तु भ्रातरम् प्राप्तम्-
Kunti, then, (her) brother, having come,
अक्रूरम्-उपसृत्य तम्
Akroora approaching him,
उवाच जन्म-निलयम्
said, birth place
स्मरन्ती-अश्रु-कल-ईक्षणा
remembering with tear filled eyed
Then, Kunti having her brother Akroora come, approached him and said, with her eyes full of tears, as she remembered her birth place.
अपि स्मरन्ति न: सौम्य पितरौ भ्रातरश्च मे ।
भगिन्यो भ्रातृपुत्राश्च जामय: सख्य एव च ॥८॥
अपि स्मरन्ति न: सौम्य
do remember our, O Gentle One!
पितरौ भ्रातर:-च मे
parents, brothers, and me
भगिन्य: भ्रातृ-पुत्रा:-च
sisters, brothers' sons, and
जामय: सख्य: एव च
ladies of the house, friends, also and
'O Gentle One! Do our parents, brothers, sisters, brothers' sons, and ladies of the house, and also friends remember me?'
भ्रात्रेयो भगवान् कृष्ण: शरण्यो भक्तवत्सल: ।
पैतृष्वसेयान् स्मरति रामश्चाम्बुरुहेक्षण: ॥९॥
भ्रात्रेय: भगवान् कृष्ण:
brothers' son (nephews), The Lord Krishna,
शरण्य: भक्त-वत्सल:
the shelter of all, the devotee's fond of
पैतृष्वसेयान् स्मरति
father's sisters sons, remember
राम:-च-अम्बुरुह-ईक्षण:
Balaraama and the lotus eyed
Do the nephews, Krishna, the protector of all, and the lover of the devotees, and the lotus eyed Balaraama, remember their father's sister's sons, Yudhishthira and all, and me?
सापत्नमध्ये शोचन्तीं वृकाणां हरिणीमिव ।
सान्त्वयिष्यति मां वाक्यै: पितृहीनांश्च बालकान् ॥१०॥
सापत्न-मध्ये शोचन्तीम्
in the enemies' midst grieving,
वृकाणाम् हरिणीम्-इव
of the wolves' (midst) she deer like
सान्त्वयिष्यति माम् वाक्यै:
will console ever me, with words
पितृ-हीनान्-च बालकान्
the father-less and boys
Will He ever console me, with His words, me, who is grieving in the midst of the enemies, like a she-deer in the midst of the wolves, and the father-less boys?
कृष्ण कृष्ण महायोगिन् विश्वात्मन् विश्वभावन ।
प्रपन्नां पाहि गोविन्द शिशुभिश्चावसीदतीम् ॥११॥
कृष्ण कृष्ण महा-योगिन्
Krishna! Krishna! O Great Yogi!
विश्व-आत्मन् विश्व-भावन
O of the universe The Soul! of all The Saviour!
प्रपन्नाम् पाहि गोविन्द
seeking refuge (me) protect, O Govinda!
शिशुभि:-च-अवसीदतीम्
with the children and suffering
Krishna! Krishna! O Great Yogi! O The Soul of the universe! The Saviour of all! Protect me, who is seeking refuge in You, and who is suffering with her children.
नान्यत्तव पदाम्भोजात् पश्यामि शरणं नृणाम् ।
बिभ्यतां मृत्युसंसारादीश्वरस्यापवर्गिकात् ॥१२॥
न-अन्यत्-तव पद-अम्भोजात्
not another Your feet lotus except
पश्यामि शरणम् नृणाम्
do see, resort of the people
बिभ्यताम् मृत्यु-संसारात्-
afraid of death, of birth and death,
ईश्वरस्य-अपवर्गिकात्
of The All-Mighty's liberation granting
For the people who are afraid of death, and of birth and death cycle, I do not see any resort other than Your lotus feet, You who are The All-mighty and The liberation Bestower.
नम: कृष्णाय शुद्धाय ब्रह्मणे परमात्मने ।
योगेश्वराय योगाय त्वामहं शरणं गता ॥१३॥
नम: कृष्णाय शुद्धाय
salutations for Krishna, The Pure
ब्रह्मणे परम-आत्मने
Brahman, The Supreme Soul,
योग-ईश्वराय योगाय
of Yoga The Master, The Yoga Personified,
त्वाम्-अह्म् शरणम् गता
in You, I shelter seek
Salutations for You, O Krishna! The Pure Brahman, The Supreme Soul, The Master of Yoga, The Yoga Personified, in You, I seek shelter.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यनुस्मृत्य स्वजनं कृष्णं च जगदीश्वरम् ।
प्रारुदद् दु:खिता राजन् भवतां प्रपितामही ॥१४॥
इति-अनुस्मृत्य स्वजनम्
thus remembering own people,
कृष्णम् च जगत्-ईश्वरम्
Krishna and of the universe The Lord,
प्रारुदत् दु:खिता राजन्
wept, afflicted, O King!
भवताम् प्रपितामही
your great grand mother (Kunti)
O King! Thus remembering her own people, and Shree Krishna, The Lord of the universe, your afflicted great grand mother wept bitterly.
समदु:खसुखोऽक्रूरो विदुरश्च महायशा: ।
सान्त्वयामासतु: कुन्तीं तत्पुत्रोत्पत्तिहेतुभि: ॥१५॥
सम-दु:ख-सुख:-अक्रूर:
equal in sorrow and joy, Akroora,
विदुर:-च महायशा:
Vidura and the highly renowned
सान्त्वयामासतु: कुन्तीम्
consoled Kunti,
तत्-पुत्र-उत्पत्ति-हेतुभि:
her sons' birth responsible, by
Akroora, who was equal in sorrow and joy, and Vidura, the highly renowned, consoled Kunti by reminding her of the causes of her sons' birth.
यास्यन् राजानमभ्येत्य विषमं पुत्रलालसम् ।
अवदत् सुहृदां मध्ये बन्धुभि: सौहृदोदितम् ॥१६॥
यास्यन् राजानम्-अभ्येत्य
when going, the king (Dhritaraashtra) approaching
विषमम् पुत्र-लालसम्
unequal in son's love,
अवदत् सुहृदाम् मध्ये
said, in the midst of friends
बन्धुभि: सौहृद-उदितम्
by the relations, of goodwill said
Just when Akroora was to leave, he approached the king Dhritaraashtra, who was partial in his behaviour with his sons and their cousins, and in the midst of his friends, related to him what his relatives had said as good will.
अक्रूर उवाच -
Akroora said -
भो भो वैचित्रवीर्य त्वं कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धन ।
भ्रातर्युपरते पाण्डावधुनाऽऽसनमास्थित: ॥१७॥
भो भो वैचित्रवीर्य
O Vichitraveerya's son!
त्वम् कुरूणाम् कीर्ति-वर्धन
you of the Kuru race fame enhance
भ्रातरि-उपरते पाण्डौ-
on brother's demise Paandu,
अधुना-आसनम्-आस्थित:
now, the throne have ascended
'O Vichitraveerya's son! You enhance the fame of the Kuru race. After the demise of your brother, Paandu, you have now ascended the throne.'
धर्मेण पालयन्नुर्वीं प्रजा: शीलेन रञ्जयन् ।
वर्तमान: सम: स्वेषु श्रेय: कीर्तिमवाप्स्यसि ॥१८॥
धर्मेण पालयन्-उर्वीम्
ethically ruling the earth,
प्रजा: शीलेन रञ्जयन्
the people with good conduct pleasing,
वर्तमान: सम: स्वेषु
behaving impartially among your own people,
श्रेय: कीर्तिम्-अवाप्स्यसि
prosperity, renown will attain
By ruling the earth ethically, and by pleasing the public with good conduct, and by behaving impartially among your own people, you will attain prosperity and fame.
अन्यथा त्वाचरँल्लोके गर्हितो यास्यसे तम: ।
तस्मात् समत्वे वर्तस्व पाण्डवेष्वात्मजेषु च ॥१९॥
अन्यथा तु-आचरन्-लोके
otherwise, indeed, acting, in the world
गर्हित: यास्यसे तम:
defamed, will go to hell
तस्मात् समत्वे वर्तस्व
therefore, impartially behave
पाण्डवेषु-आत्मजेषु च
with the Paandavas and your sons
Indeed, if you act otherwise, you will be defamed in the world and will attain hell. Therefore behave impartially with the Paandavas and your sons.
नेह चात्यन्तसंवास: कर्हिचित् केनचित् सह ।
राजन् स्वेनापि देहेन किमु जायात्मजादिभि: ॥२०॥
न-इह च-अत्यन्त संवास:
not here and for ever, together lives
कर्हिचित् केनचित् सह
ever, anybody with
राजन् स्वेन-अपि देहेन
O King! With own also body,
किम्-उ जाया-आत्मज-आदिभि:
what then of, wife children and all
O King! No one ever lives here together with anyone for ever. Not even with ones own body, what then of wife, children and others?
एक: प्रसूयते जन्तुरेक एव प्रलीयते ।
एकोऽनुभुङ्क्ते सुकृतमेक एव च दुष्कृतम् ॥२१॥
एक: प्रसूयते जन्तु:-
alone is born creature,
एक: एव प्रलीयते
alone only dies,
एक:-अनुभुङ्क्ते सुकृतम्-
alone enjoys the good deeds,
एक: एव च दुष्कृतम्
alone only and misdeeds
A creature is born alone, and dies all alone. Alone he enjoys the fruits of good deeds and alone only bears the consequences of bad deeds.
अधर्मोपचितं वित्तं हरन्त्यन्येऽल्पमेधस: ।
सम्भोजनीयापदेशैर्जलानीव जलौकस: ॥२२॥
अधर्म-उपचितम् वित्तम्
by unrighteousness earned wealth
हरन्ति-अन्ये-अल्प-मेधस:
is squandered by others, of the low minded one
सम्भोजनीय-अपदेशै:-
should be shared by such advice,
जलानि-इव जल-ओकस:
the water like by the aquatic creatures
The wealth earned by the lowly minded, by unrighteous means, is squandered by others, with the advice that it should be shared, just like the waters are shared by the aquatic creatures.
पुष्णाति यानधर्मेण स्वबुद्ध्या तमपण्डितम् ।
तेऽकृतार्थं प्रहिण्वन्ति प्राणा राय: सुतादय: ॥२३॥
पुष्णाति यान्-अधर्मेण
nourishes whom by unrighteousness,
स्व-बुद्ध्या तम्-अपण्डितम्
by my-own thinking, him, the fool,
ते-अकृतार्थम् प्रहिण्वन्ति
they, the unsated, forsake
प्राणा: राय: सुत-आदय:
the life, riches, sons and others
The fool, who keeps on nourishing them, with the thought that they are his own people, and is yet unsatisfied doing so, him, they forsake, the life, the riches and the sons and others.
स्वयं किल्विषमादाय तैस्त्यक्तो नार्थकोविद: ।
असिद्धार्थो विशत्यन्धं स्वधर्म विमुखस्तम: ॥२४॥
स्वयम् किल्विषम्-आदाय
himself sins carrying
तै:-त्यक्त: न-अर्थ-कोविद:
by them deserted, not (own) interest knowing,
असिद्ध-अर्थ: विशति-अन्धम्
unfulfilled of purpose, enters the blind,
स्व-धर्म विमुख: तम:
own duty neglecting darkness
Deserted by them, unaware of his own interest, neglecting his own duties, unfulfilled of his own purpose, he carrying his load of sins, enters the blind darkness of hell.
तस्माल्लोकमिमं राजन् स्वप्नमायामनोरथम् ।
वीक्ष्यायम्यात्मनाऽऽत्मानं सम: शान्तो भव प्रभो ॥२५॥
तस्मात्-लोकम्-इमम् राजन्
therefore, the world this, O King!
स्वप्न-माया-मनोरथम्
dream, illusion, fancy,
वीक्ष्य-आयम्य-आत्मना-आत्मानम्
realizing, control by yourself (reason) self (mind)
सम: शान्त: भव प्रभो
impartial composed become, O lord!
O King! therefore, realizing, this world to be a dream, an illusion and a fancy, O lord! Control your own mind with your self-reasoning, and become impartial and composed.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच -
Dhritaraashtra said -
यथा वदति कल्याणीं वाचं दानपते भवान् ।
तथानया न तृप्यामि मर्त्य: प्राप्य यथामृतम् ॥२६॥
यथा वदति कल्याणीम्
as (you) say such beneficiary
वाचम् दानपते भवान्
words, O Akroora! You,
तथा-अनया न तृप्यामि
just as by them (I) am not sated
मर्त्य: प्राप्य यथा-अमृतम्
a mortal acquiring like nectar
'O Akroora! Such beneficiary words of yours do not satisfy me, just as having acquired nectar a mortal man is not sated.
तथापि सूनृता सौम्य हृदि न स्थीयते चले ।
पुत्रानुरागविषमे विद्युत् सौदामनी यथा ॥२७॥
तथा-अपि सूनृता सौम्य
then even, the good advice, O gentle One!
हृदि न स्थीयते चले
in heart does not stay fickle (mind)
पुत्र-अनुराग-विषमे
by the sons' affection biased
विद्युत् सौदामनी यथा
lightening in the clouds like
O Gentle One! Though your advice is very good and proper, it does not stay in my fickle mind, which is biased due to the affection of my sons, just as the lightening does not stay in the clouds.
ईश्वरस्य विधिं को नु विधुनोत्यन्यथा पुमान् ।
भूमेर्भारावताराय योऽवतीर्णो यदो: कुले ॥२८॥
ईश्वरस्य विधिम् क: नु
of The All-mighty Lord's decree
विधुनोति-अन्यथा पुमान्
who indeed renders otherwise, a person,
भूमे:-भार-अवताराय
of the earth's burden to remove
य:-अवतीर्ण: यदो: कुले
Who has descended in the Yadu's race
'Which man can render otherwise the decree of The All-mighty Lord? He, Who has descended in the race of the Yadus', to remove the burden of the earth.'
यो दुर्विमर्शपथया निजमाययेदं सृष्ट्वा गुणान् विभजते तदनुप्रविष्ट: ।
तस्मै नमो दुरवबोधविहारतन्त्रसंसारचक्रगतये परमेश्वराय ॥२९॥
य: दुर्विमर्श-पथया निज-मायया-
Who, by unfathomable ways, by Own Maayaa,
इदम् सृष्ट्वा गुणान्
this having created, the attributes
विभजते तत्-अनुप्रविष्ट:
distributes, them enters,
तस्मै नम: दुर्-अवबोध-
to Him (my) salutations, difficult to be understood
विहार-तन्त्र-
the sporting complexities,
संसार-चक्र-गतये परम-ईश्वराय
of transmigration wheel's motion, The Supreme Lord!
My salutations to The Supreme Lord, Who by His Own unfathomable ways of Maaya, has created this universe, and distributing the attributes, Himself enters them. His sporting complexities are difficult to understand, He is the motion of the wheel of transmigration.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यभिप्रेत्य नृपतेरभिप्रायं स यादव: ।
सुहृद्भि: समनुज्ञात: पुनर्यदुपुरीमगात् ॥३०॥
इति-अभिप्रेत्य नृपते:-
thus knowing the king's
अरभिप्रायम् स: यादव:
mind, he, the Yaadavaas,
सुहृद्भि: समनुज्ञात:
from the relatives and friends taking leave
पुन:-यदुपुरीम्-अगात्
again to Yadu's capital returned
Thus, knowing the king's mind, and taking leave of the relatives and friends, he, Akroora, the Yaadavaas, returned to the capital of the Yadus', Mathura.
शशंस रामकृष्णाभ्यां धृतराष्ट्रविचेष्टितम् ।
पाण्डवान् प्रति कौरव्य यदर्थं प्रेषित: स्वयम् ॥३१॥
शशंस राम-कृष्णाभ्याम्
related to Balaraama and Krishna
धृतराष्ट्र-विचेष्टितम्
Dhritraashtraa's behaviour
पाण्डवान् प्रति कौरव्य
the Paandavas towards, O Scion of the Kurus'!
यत्-अर्थम् प्रेषित: स्वयम्
for which purpose, was sent, he himself
O Scion of the Kurus'! Akroora, on returning to Mathura, related the behaviour of Dhritaraashtra towards the Paandavas, for which purpose he himself was sent there.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे वैयासिक्यामष्टादशसाहस्र्यां पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे एकोनपञ्चाशत्तमोऽध्याय: ॥४९॥
॥ समाप्तमिदं दशमस्कन्धस्य पूर्वार्धं ॥

Thus ends the forty-ninth discourse, in the first half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
