श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अस्ति: प्राप्तिश्च कंसस्य महिष्यौ भरतर्षभ ।
मृते भर्तरि दु:खार्ते ईयतु: स्म पितुर्गृहान् ॥१॥
अस्ति: प्राप्ति:-च
Asti and Prjaapati
कंसस्य महिष्यौ भरतर्षभ
Kansa's queens, O! of the Bharata's the foremost!
मृते भर्तरि दु:खार्ते
after the death of the husband
ईयतु: स्म पितु:-गृहान्
went away to father's house
O Pareekshita! The two queens of Kansa, Asti and Prjaapati, after their husband's death went away to their father's house.
पित्रे मगधराजाय जरासन्धाय दु:खिते ।
वेदयाञ्चक्रतु: सर्वमात्मवैधव्यकारणम् ॥२॥
पित्रे मगध-राजाय
to the father, Magadha's king,
जरासन्धाय दु:खिते
Jaraasandha, sorrowful they both
वेदयान्-चक्रतु: सर्वम्-
made known all of
आत्म-वैधव्य-कारणम्
their widowhood causes
Both of them with sorrow, made known to their father Jaraasandha, the king of Magadha, the causes of their widowhood.
स तदप्रियमाकर्ण्य शोकामर्षयुतो नृप ।
अयादवीं महीं कर्तुं चक्रे परममुद्यमम् ॥३॥
स: तत्-अप्रियम्-आकर्ण्य
he that unpleasant hearing,
शोक-अमर्ष-युत: नृप
with grief and indignation caught, O King!
अ-यादवीम् महीम् कर्तुम्
non-Yadus the earth to render
चक्रे परमम्-उद्यमम्
put in great effort
O King! Hearing that unpleasant news, he, Jaraasandha was caught in grief and indignation, and put in great effort to rid the earth of the Yadus.
अक्षौहिणीभिर्विंशत्या तिसृभिश्चापि संवृत: ।
यदुराजधानीं मथुरां न्यरुणत् सर्वतोदिशम् ॥४॥
अक्षौहिणीभि:-विंशत्या
by Akshauhini (army) twenty
तिसृभि:-च-अपि संवृत:
three, and also, surrounded
यदु-राजधानीम् मथुराम्
Yadu's capital, Mathuraa,
न्यरुणत् सर्वत:-दिशम्
seized, on all sides
Surrounded by twenty three Akshauhinee armies, he seized Mathuraa, the capital of the Yadus, on all sides.
निरीक्ष्य तद्बलं कृष्ण उद्वेलमिव सागरम् ।
स्वपुरं तेन संरुद्धं स्वजनं च भयाकुलम् ॥५॥
निरीक्ष्य तत्-बलम् कृष्ण
viewing that strength, Krishna
उद्वेलम्-इव सागरम्
overflowing like the sea,
स्व-पुरम् तेन संरुद्धम्
own city by it besieged,
स्व-जनम् च भय-आकुलम्
own people and with fear stricken
Krishna, viewing the strength of that army, which was overflowing like the sea, and his own city being besieged by it, and his own people stricken with fear,…
चिन्तयामास भगवान् हरि: कारणमानुष: ।
तद्देशकालानुगुणं स्वावतारप्रयोजनम् ॥६॥
चिन्तयामास भगवान्
reflected The Lord
हरि: कारण-मानुष:
Shree Hari, the cause of human form,
तत्-देश-काल-अनुगुणम्
that place and time according to,
स्व-अवतार-प्रयोजनम्
own descent's purpose
The Lord Shree Hari, who had taken the human form for a cause, reflected on the purpose of His descent according to that place and time.
हनिष्यामि बलं ह्येतद् भुवि भारं समाहितम् ।
मागधेन समानीतं वश्यानां सर्वभूभुजाम् ॥७॥
हनिष्यामि बलम् हि-एतत्
(I) will kill the army indeed this,
भुवि भारम् समाहितम्
of the earth a burden, together
मागधेन समानीतम्
by the Magadha king, brought
वश्यानाम् सर्व-भू-भुजाम्
dependent all the earth's rulers
'I will kill this army brought together by the king of Magadha, Jaraasandha, which consists of his dependent rulers of the earth.'
अक्षौहिणीभि: संख्यातं भटाश्वरथकुञ्जरै: ।
मागधस्तु न हन्तव्यो भूय: कर्ता बलोद्यमम् ॥८॥
अक्षौहिणीभि: संख्यातम्
with the Akshauhinee, counted as,
भट्-अश्व-रथ-कुञ्जरै:
foot soldiers, cavalry, chariots and elephants,
मागध:-तु न हन्तव्य:
Magadha king indeed, should not be killed
भूय: कर्ता बल-उद्यमम्
again the organiser of strength effort (as an army)
The numbers of Akshauhinee armies include, foot soldiers, cavalry, chariots and elephants. The king of Magadha, however, should not be killed, as he will again take an effort to organise the strength in the shape of an army.
एतदर्थोऽवतारोऽयं भूभारहरणाय मे ।
संरक्षणाय साधूनां कृतोऽन्येषां वधाय च ॥९॥
एतत्-अर्थ:-अवतार:-अयम्
for this purpose, descent this
भू-भार-हरणाय मे
the earth's burden to remove, Mine,
संरक्षणाय साधूनाम्
for protection of the virtuous,
कृत:-अन्येषाम् वधाय च
is taken, of the others' slaying and
This descent of Mine is taken for this very purpose, to remove the burden of the earth, for the protection of the virtuous and for the destruction of the vile.
अन्योऽपि धर्मरक्षायै देह: संभ्रियते मया ।
विरामायाप्यधर्मस्य काले प्रभवत: क्वचित् ॥१0॥
अन्य:-अपि धर्म-रक्षायै
other also, for righteousness protection
देह: संभ्रियते मया
form is taken by Me,
विरामाय-अपि-अधर्मस्य
to stop even unrighteousness,
काले प्रभवत: क्वचित्
at times prevalent at places
Other forms are also assumed by Me, for the protection of righteousness and to stop unrighteousness, which are at times prevalent at places.
एवं ध्यायति गोविन्द आकाशात् सूर्यवर्चसौ ।
रथावुपस्थितौ सद्य: ससूतौ सपरिच्छदौ ॥११॥
एवम् ध्यायति गोविन्दे
thus pondering, as was Govinda (Krishna)
आकाशात् सूर्य-वर्चसौ
from the sky, Sun like brilliant
रथौ-उपस्थितौ सद्य:
two chariots, appeared instantly,
स-सूतौ सपरिच्छदौ
with charioteers, and necessary appurtenances
As Govinda, Krishna, pondered thus, there appeared from the sky two chariots, brilliant as the Sun, with a charioteer each, and equipped with necessary equipments.
आयुधानि च दिव्यानि पुराणानि यदृच्छया ।
दृष्त्वा तानि हृषीकेश: सङ्कर्षणमथाब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
आयुधानि च दिव्यानि
weapons and divine,
पुराणानि यदृच्छया
ancient, of their own,
दृष्त्वा तानि हृषीकेश:
seeing them, Krishna (Controller of the senses)
सङ्कर्षणम्-अथ-अब्रवीत्
to Balaraama then said
Krishna, seeing the divine ancient weapons appearing on their own accord, then, said to Balaraama,….
पश्यार्य व्यसनं प्राप्तं यदूनां त्वावतां प्रभो ।
एष ते रथ आयातो दयितान्यायुधानि च ॥१३॥
पश्य-आर्य व्यसनम् प्राप्तम्
'See, O noble one! calamity befallen
यदूनाम् त्वावताम् प्रभो
of the Yadus, with You the protector, O Lord!
एष: ते रथ: आयात:
here is your chariot come
दयितानि-आयुधानि च
favourite, weapons and
'O Noble brother! Look here, calamity having stricken the Yadus, for whom You are the protector, O Lord! Your favourite chariot and the weapons have come.'
यानमास्थाय जह्येतद् व्यसनात् स्वान् समुद्धर ।
एतदर्थं हि नौ जन्म साधूनामीश शर्मकृत् ॥१४॥
यानम्-आस्थाय जहि-एतत्
the vehicle mounting kill, from this
व्यसनात् स्वान् समुद्धर
calamity own people protect
एतत्-अर्थम् हि नौ जन्म
this is the purpose indeed of our birth
साधूनाम्-ईश शर्मकृत्
for the noble, O Lord! Bring peace
O Lord! Mount this vehicle and kill the army and deliver your own people from this calamity. Indeed, this birth of ours is for this purpose only, i.e., to bring peace to the noble souls.
त्रयोविंशत्यनीकाख्यं भूमेर्भारमपाकुरु ।
एवं सम्मन्त्र्य दाशार्हौ दंशितौ रथिनौ पुरात् ॥१५॥
त्रयोविंशति-अनीक-आख्यम्
the twenty three army called
भूमे:-भारम्-अपाकुरु
as the earth's burden, do remove
एवम् सम्मन्त्र्य दाशार्हौ
thus, deciding, The scions of the Daashaarha's,
दंशितौ रथिनौ पुरात्
mounting the chariots, from the city (rode out)
The scions of the Daashaarha's, Balaraama and Krishna, mutually deciding to remove the burden of the earth in the shape of the twenty three armies, mounted their chariots, and rode out of the city.
निर्जग्मतु: स्वायुधाढ्यौबलेनाल्पयीयसाऽऽवृतौ ।
शङ्खं दध्मौ विनिर्गत्य हरिर्दारुकसारथि: ॥१६॥
निर्जग्मतु: स्व-आयुध-आढ्यौ
both went out with own weapons fortified,
बलेन-अल्पयीसा-आवृतौ
with army a small, surrounded,
शङ्खम् दध्मौ विनिर्गत्य
the conch blew, on coming out
हरि:-दारुक-सारथि:
Shree Hari, with Daaruka as the charioteer
They went out of the city armed with their weapons and armour and surrounded by a small army. Shree Hari blew the conch as he rode the chariot with Daaruka as His charioteer.
ततोऽभूत् परसैन्यानां हृदि वित्रासवेपथु: ।
तावाह मागधो वीक्ष्य हे कृष्ण पुरुषाधम ॥१७॥
तत:-अभूत् पर-सैन्यानाम्
there happened in the enemies' armies',
हृदि वित्रास-वेपथु:
hearts with terror shivering
तौ-आह मागध: वीक्ष्य
to the two said, the Magadha king, seeing,
हे कृष्ण पुरुष-अधम
O Krishna! of the men the vilest
There happened shivering with terror in the hearts of the enemies' army. Seeing them both intently, the king of Magadha said, 'O Krishna! The vilest of men!'
न त्वया योद्धुमिच्छामि बालेनैकेन लज्जया ।
गुप्तेन हि त्वया मन्द न योत्स्ये याहि बन्धुहन् ॥१८॥
न त्वया योद्धुम्-इच्छामि
not with You, to fight (I) want,
बालेन-एकेन लज्जया
a boy one, for shame
गुप्तेन हि त्वया मन्द
hiding Yourself, with You, O Fool!
न योत्स्ये याहि बन्धुहन्
will not fight, go away O killer of Your own people
'O Fool! I do not want to fight with You a mere boy, One Who keeps hiding. O Killer of Your own people, (maternal uncle) I will not fight, You go away.'
तव राम यदि श्रद्धा युध्यस्व धैर्यमुद्वह ।
हित्वा वा मच्छरैश्छिन्नं देहं स्वर्याहि मां जहि ॥१९॥
तव राम यदि श्रद्धा
your, Balaraama, if inclination is,
युध्यस्व धैर्यम्-उद्वह
fight, patience have
हित्वा वा मत्-शरै:-छिन्नम्
leaving or by my arrows torn
देहम् स्वर्-याहि माम् जहि
body to heaven go, me kill
Balaraama! If you have the inclination, come fight, and have patience. Either leave your body shattered by my arrows and go to heaven, or kill me.
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
न वै शूरा विकत्थन्ते दर्शयन्त्येव पौरुषम् ।
न गृह्णीमो वचो राजन्नातुरस्य मुमूर्षत: ॥२०॥
न वै शूरा: विकत्थन्ते
not indeed the valorous, brag,
दर्शयन्ति-एव पौरुषम्
exhibiting only manliness
न गृह्णीम: वच: राजन्-
will not take words O King!
आतुरस्य मुमूर्षत:
of the grieved and about to die
O King! The valorous indeed do not brag, they only exhibit their manliness. And your words we will not take seriously, as you are aggrieved, and are about to die.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
जरासुतस्तावभिसृत्य माधवौ महाबलौघेन बलीयसाऽऽवृणोत् ।
ससैन्ययानध्वजवाजिसारथी सूर्यानलौ वायुरिवाभ्ररेणुभि: ॥२१॥
जरा-सुत:-तौ-अभिसृत्य
Jara's son, (Jaraasandha) them approaching,
माधवौ महा-बल-औघेन
the two Maadhavas, by great army strength
बलीयसा-अवृणोत्
powerful surrounded
स-सैन्य-यान-ध्वज-वाजि-
with the army with chariots, flags, cavalry,
सारथी सूर्य-अनलौ
charioteers, the Sun and the Fire,
वायु:-इव-अभ्र-रेणुभि:
wind like by the clouds, and sand dust
Jaraasandha, the son of Jaraa, approached Them both Krishna and Balaraama, and surrounded Them all around, with his great army consisting of the army, chariots, flags, cavalry and charioteers, like the wind causes the clouds to cover the Sun and the sand particles cover the Fire.
सुपर्णतालध्वजचिह्नितौ रथावलक्षयन्त्यो हरिरामयोर्मृधे ।
स्त्रिय: पुराट्टालकहर्म्यगोपुरं समाश्रिता: संमुमुहु: शुचार्दिता: ॥२२॥
सुपर्ण-ताल-ध्वज-चिह्नितौ
Gaduda and palm (tree) on the flag embalmed
रथौ अलक्षन्त्य:
chariots not seeing
हरि-रामयो:-मृधे
of Hari and Balaraama, in the battle,
स्त्रिय: पुर-अट्टालक-
the women on the city's terraces,
हर्म्य-गोपुरम् समाश्रिता:
mansions and gates climbed
संमुमुहु: शुच-अर्दिता:
fainted, by grief and agony
The women had climbed the terraces, mansions and the gates of the city, and were not able to see the chariots of Krishna and Balaraama, marked with the flags with the emblems of Gaduda and the palm tree, so, with grief and agony, they fainted.
हरि: परानीकपयोमुचां मुहु: शिलीमुखात्युल्बणवर्षपीडितम् ।
स्वसैन्यमालोक्य सुरासुरार्चितं व्यस्फूर्जयच्छार्ङ्गशरासनोत्तमम् ॥२३॥
हरि: पर-अनीक-
Shree Hari by the enemy's army
पय:-मुचाम् मुहु:
clouds showering again and again
शिलीमुखात्-
arrows like
उल्बण-वर्ष-पीडितम्
by great rain tormented
स्व-सैन्यम्-आलोक्य
own army observing,
सुर-असुर-अर्चितम्
by the gods and the demons, worshipped,
व्यस्फूर्जयत्-
twanged
शार्ङ्ग-शरासन-उत्तमम्
Shaaranga, the bow excellent
Shree Hari observed that His own army was tormented by the discharge of the arrows by the enemy's army like clouds showering rain, and He twanged His excellent bow Shaaranga, worshipped by the gods and the demons.
गृह्णन् निषङ्गादथ सन्दधच्छरान् विकृष्य मुञ्चञ्छितबाणपूगान् ।
निघ्नन् रथान् कुञ्जरवाजिपत्तीन् निरन्तरं यद्वदलातचक्रम् ॥२४॥
गृह्णन् निषङ्गात्-अथ
getting hold of, from the quiver, then,
सन्दधन्-शरान् विकृष्य
placing the arrows pulling,
मुञ्चन्-शित-बाण-पूगान्
and releasing, the sharp arrows' volleys,
निघ्नन् रथान् कुञ्जर-वाजि-
striking the chariots, elephants, horses,
पत्तीन् निरन्तरम्
foot-soldiers, constantly
यत्-वत्-अलात-चक्रम्
that like fire brand
He started to discharge the volley of sharp arrows, getting hold of them from His quiver, placing them on the bow, and pulling the string to the full and then releasing them, and struck the chariots, elephants, horses and the foot-soldiers, constantly, without a break, like the fire brand.
निर्भिन्नकुम्भा: करिणो निपेतुरनेकशोऽश्वा: शरवृक्णकन्धरा: ।
रथा हताश्वध्वजसूतनायका: पदातयश्छिन्नभुजोरुकन्धरा: ॥25॥
निर्भिन्न-कुम्भा: करिण:
split up frontal heads elephants,
निपेतु:-अनेकश:-अश्वा:
fell very many horses,
शर-वृक्ण-कन्धरा:
by bows chopped off at shoulders,
रथा: हत-अश्व-ध्वज-
chariots destroyed, and horses, flags,
सूत-नायका: पदातय:-
charioteers and masters, the foot soldiers,
छिन्न-भुज-उरु-कन्धरा:
smashed, with their arms, thighs and shoulders
Many an elephant fell down with their frontal heads smashed, and so also very many horses, with their heads cut off at the shoulders, the chariots destroyed, along with the horses, the flags, the charioteers, and the masters. The foot soldiers lay smashed at the arms, thighs and shoulders.
संछिद्यमानद्विपदेभवाजिनामङ्गप्रसूता: शतशोऽसृगापगा: ।
भुजाहय: पूरुषशीर्षकच्छपा हतद्विपद्वीपहयग्रहाकुला: ॥२६॥
संछिद्यमान-द्विपद-
with shattered men's,
इभ-वाजिनाम्-अङ्ग-प्रसूता:
elephants', horses', limbs flowing
शतश:-असृग-अपगा:
hundreds of blood rivers,
भुज-अहय: पूरुष-शीर्ष-
the arms as snakes, men's heads
कच्छपा: हत-द्विप-द्वीप-
as turtles, the dead elephants, as the islands,
हय-ग्रह-आकुला:
the horse alligators like infested
There were hundreds of blood rivers flowing from the shattered limbs of the men, elephants, horses. The arms looked like snakes, the heads of men as turtles, the dead elephants like islands and the horses like alligators infesting the blood rivers.
करोरुमीना नरकेशशैवला धनुस्तरङ्गायुधगुल्मसङ्कुला: ।
अच्छूरिकावर्तभयानका महामणिप्रवेकाभरणाश्मशर्करा: ॥२७॥
कर-उरु-मीना:
hands and thighs fishes,
नर-केश-शैवला
human hair like weeds,
धनु:-तरङ्ग-
bows, as waves,
आयुध-गुल्म सङ्कुला:
weapons like clusters spread,
अच्छूरिका-आवर्त भयानका:
they, shield like rounded, fearful
महा-मणि-प्रवेक-
excellent gems, big
आभरण-अश्म-शर्करा:
of the bodies by stones and pebbles
In those blood rivers, the hands and thighs looked like fishes, human hair like weeds, the bows as waves, the weapons lay like clusters, and the rivers looked fearful like the shields, and the valuable gems on the bodies were like stones and pebbles.
प्रवर्तिता भीरुभयावहा मृधे मनस्विनां हर्षकरी: परस्परम् ।
विनिघ्नतारीन् मुसलेन दुर्मदान् सङ्कर्षणेनापरिमेयतेजसा ॥२८॥
प्रवर्तिता भीरु-भय-आवहा
was flowing, to the cowards terror bringing,
मृधे मनस्विनाम्
in the battle, to the valorous
हर्षकरी: परस्परम्
joy bringing mutually,
विनिघ्नत-अरीन् मुसलेन
killing the enemies, by the pastel,
दुर्मदान् सङ्कर्षणेन-
the vainglorious enemies, by Balaraama,
अपरिमेय-तेजसा
of unlimited valour
In the battle the blood rivers were flowing generating fear in the cowards and mutual joy to the valorous enemies, to kill each other, just as Lord Balaraama of unlimited valour, killed the vainglorious enemies by his pastel.
बलं तदङ्गार्णवदुर्गभैरवं दुरन्तपारं मगधेन्द्रपालितम् ।
क्षयं प्रणीतं वसुदेवपुत्रयोर्विक्रीडितं तज्जगदीशयो: परम् ॥२९॥
बलम् तत्-अङ्ग-अर्णव-
army that, O Dear! ocean like,
दुर्ग-भैरवम् दुरन्त-पारम्
to cross fearful, unfathomable,
मगध-इन्द्र-पालितम्
by the Magadha king led,
क्षयम् प्रणीतम् वसुदेव-पुत्रयो:
to destruction brought by Vasudeva's two sons,
र्विक्रीडितम् तत्-
a mere play that
जगदीशयो: परम्
of the universe's Rulers supreme
O Dear! The ocean like army, unfathomable, fearful to cross, led by the king of Magadha, was brought to destruction, as a mere play, by the two sons of Vasudeva, Who are the Supreme Rulers of the universe.
स्थित्युद्भवान्तं भुवनत्रयस्य य: समीहतेऽनन्तगुण: स्वलीलया ।
न तस्य चित्रं परपक्षनिग्रहस्तथापि मर्त्यानुविधस्य वर्ण्यते ॥३०॥
स्थिति-उद्भव-अन्तम्
preservation, creation, annihilation
भुवन-त्रयस्य य: समीहते-
of the three worlds, Who encompasses
अनन्त-गुण: स्व-लीलया
endless qualities, by His Own Maayaa
न तस्य चित्रम् पर-पक्ष-
not His is surprising, of the enemies
निग्रह:-तथा-अपि मर्त्य-
control, even then, of the mortal
अनुविधस्य वर्ण्यते
imitating, describes
For The One Who preserves, creates and annihilates, the three worlds, by His own mystic power, Maaya, and encompasses endless qualities, all this is not at all surprising, yet His imitation of the mortal, and so the control of the enemies' forces are described to some extent.
जग्राह विरथं रामो जरासन्धं महाबलम् ।
हतानीकावशिष्टासुं सिंह: सिंहमिवौजसा ॥३१॥
जग्राह विरथम् राम:
caught hold of, the chariot-less, Balaraama,
जरासन्धम् महाबलम्
Jaraasandha, the valorous
हत-अनीक-अवशिष्ट-असुम्
(whose) killed was the army, with left life
सिंह: सिंहम्-इव-औजसा
a lion, another lion like with force
Balaraama caught hold of the valorous chariot-less Jaraasandha, who was left alone with life, his army being killed, like a lion seizes another lion forcefully.
बध्यमानं हतारातिं पाशैर्वारुणमानुषै: ।
वारयामास गोविन्दस्तेन कार्यचिकीर्षया ॥३२॥
बध्यमानम् हत-आरातिम्
about to bind, (Who) had killed many foes,
पाशै:-वारुण-मानुषै:
by bondages of Varuna and human,
वारयामास गोविन्द:-तेन
prevented Govinda, from (doing) that,
कार्य-चिकीर्षया
own (plan) of action wanting to accomplish
As Balaraama, the killer of many foes, was about to bind Jaraasandha, with cords of Varuna and human, Govinda prevented Him, wanting to accomplish His own plan of action.
स मुक्तो लोकनाथाभ्यां व्रीडितो वीरसंमत: ।
तपसे कृतसङ्कल्पो वारित: पथि राजभि: ॥३३॥
स: मुक्त: लोक-नाथाभ्याम्
he, let go, by the universe's Rulers,
व्रीडित: वीर-संमत:
ashamed, by the valiant's honoured
तपसे कृत-सङ्कल्प:
in austerities, making up his mind,
वारित: पथि राजभि:
was prevented on the way by the kings
He, who was let go of by The Rulers of the universe, was ashamed, as he was honoured by the valiant's, and resolved to practice austerities. But he was prevented to do so by the kings, on the way.
वाक्यै: पवित्रार्थपदैर्नयनै: प्राकृतैरपि ।
स्वकर्मबन्धप्राप्तोऽयं यदुभिस्ते पराभव: ॥३४॥
वाक्यै: पवित्र-अर्थ-
by expressions, with sacred meaning,
पदै:-नयनै: प्राकृतै:-अपि
with words, and instances, counsels, also,
स्व-कर्म-बन्ध-प्राप्त:-अयम्
by own actions' bondages, is acquired this
यदुभि:-ते पराभव:
by the Yadu's your defeat
They gave him counsel with expression and words of sacred import, and also by instances, that, this defeat of yours by the Yadus', is because of the bondage of your own past actions.
हतेषु सर्वानीकेषु नृपो बार्हद्रथस्तदा ।
उपेक्षितो भगवता मगधान् दुर्मना ययौ ॥३५॥
हतेषु सर्व-अनीकेषु
being killed all the armies
नृप: बार्हद्रथ:-तदा
the king (Jaraasandha) son of Brihadratha, then,
उपेक्षित: भगवता
ignored by The Lord,
मगधान् दुर्मना ययौ
to Magadha, dispirited went
The king Jaraasandha, the son of Brihadratha, after all his armies were killed, was ignored by The Lord, and dispirited, he returned to his own territory of Magadha.
मुकुन्दोऽप्यक्षतबलो निस्तीर्णारिबलार्णव: ।
विकीर्यमाण: कुसुमैस्त्रिदशैरनुमोदित: ॥३६॥
मुकुन्द:-अपि-अक्षत-बल:-
Mukunda also, of unbeaten valour,
निस्तीर्ण-अरि-बल-अर्णव:
having crossed the enemies army ocean,
विकीर्यमाण: कुसुमै:-त्रिदशै:-
was showered with flowers by the gods
अनुमोदित:
and appreciated
Mukunda, of unbeatable valour, also, having crossed the ocean of the enemies armies, was showered with flowers by the gods, and was applauded by them.
माथुरैरुपसङ्गम्य विज्वरैर्मुदितात्मभि: ।
उपगीयमानविजय: सूतमागधवन्दिभि: ॥३७॥
माथुरै:-उपसङ्गम्य
with the Mathura people meeting,
विज्वरै:-मुदित-आत्मभि:
rid of agony, delighted at heart,
उपगीयमान-विजय:
being sung of the victory,
सूत-मागध-वन्दिभि:
by the Sutas, Magadhas and the Vandis
He met with the people of Mathura who were now rid of agony and were delighted at heart, and His victory was sung of by the Sutas, Magadhas and the Vandis.
शङ्खदुन्दुभयो नेदुर्भेरीतूर्याण्यनेकश: ।
वीणावेणुमृदङ्गानि पुरं प्रविशति प्रभौ ॥३८॥
शङ्ख-दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
conchs, trumpets, sounded,
भेरी-तूर्याणि-अनेकश:
drums, clarinets, many
वीणा-वेणु-मृदङ्गानि
lutes, flutes, and large drums,
पुरम् प्रविशति प्रभौ
as the town entered The Two Lords
As The Two Lords entered the town, conchs, trumpets, drums, many clarinets, lutes, flutes, and large drums were sounded.
सिक्तमार्गां हृष्टजनां पताकाभिरलङ्कृताम् ।
निर्घुष्टां ब्रह्मघोषेण कौतुकाबद्धतोरणाम् ॥३९॥
सिक्त-मार्गाम् हृष्ट-जनाम्
sprinkled with water the roads, joyful people,
पताकाभि:-अलङ्कृताम्
by festoons decorated,
निर्घुष्टाम् ब्रह्म-घोषेण
resounding with Vedic hymns,
कौतुक-आबद्ध-तोरणाम्
with wonderful tied archways
The cities' roads were sprinkled with water, it was decorated with festoons, and was resounding with Vedic hymns, and had wonderful archways erected and the people were full of joy.
निचीयमानो नारीभिर्माल्यदध्यक्षताङ्कुरै: ।
निरीक्ष्यमाण: सस्नेहं प्रीत्युत्कलितलोचनै: ॥४०॥
निचीयमान: नारीभि:-
sprinkled by the women,
माल्य-दधि-अक्षत-अङ्कुरै:
with garlands, curds, unbroken rice, and sprouts,
निरीक्ष्यमाण: सस्नेहम्
watched with fondness,
प्रीति-उत्कलित-लोचनै:
compassion overflowing eyes
The city was sprinkled by the women with garlands and curds, unbroken rice and sprouts. The Lord watched with fondness, and with eyes overflowing with compassion.
आयोधनगतं वित्तमनन्तं वीरभूषणम् ।
यदुराजाय तत् सर्वमाहृतं प्रादिशत्प्रभु: ॥४१॥
आयोधन-गतम् वित्तम्-
from the battle field attained wealth,
अनन्तम् वीर-भूषणम्
endless, the warriors' ornaments,
यदु-राजाय तत् सर्वम्-
to the Yadus' king, that all
आहृतम् प्रादिशत्-प्रभु:
brought and presented, The Lord
The Lord presented to the king of the Yadus, the endless wealth and the ornaments of the warriors which was acquired from the battle field.
एवं सप्तदशकृत्वस्तावत्यक्षौहिणीबल: ।
युयुधे मागधो राजा यदुभि: कृष्णपालितै: ॥४२॥
एवम् सप्तदश कृत्व:-
thus, seventeen times,
तावती-अक्षौहिणी-बल:
with as many (twenty three), Akshauhinee armies
युयुधे मागध: राजा
fought the Magadha king
यदुभि: कृष्ण-पालितै:
with the Yadus, by Krishna protected
In this manner, seventeen times, with as many, that is, twenty three Akshauhinee armies, the king of Magadha fought with the Yadus, who were protected by Krishna.
अक्षिण्वंस्तद्बलं सर्वं वृष्णय: कृष्णतेजसा ।
हतेषु स्वेष्वनीकेषु त्यक्तोऽयादरिभिर्नृप: ॥४३॥
अक्षिण्वन्-तत्-बलम् सर्वम्
annihilating that army, all,
वृष्णय: कृष्ण-तेजसा
the Vrishnees, by Krishna's lustre,
हतेषु स्वेषु-अनीकेषु त्यक्त:-
being killed own armies, let off,
अयात्-अरिभि:-नृप:
returned by the enemies, the king
Supported by the illustrious might of Shri Krishna, the Vrishnees annihilated all those armies. His own armies being killed and he himself let off by the enemies, the king of Magadha, returned to his capital.
अष्टादशमसंग्राम आगामिनि तदन्तरा ।
नारदप्रेषितो वीरो यवन: प्रत्यदृष्यत ॥४४॥
अष्टादशम-संग्रामे
the eighteenth battle,
आगामिनि तत्-अन्तरा
about to commence, in its middle,
नारद-प्रेषित: वीर:
by Naarada sent the hero
यवन: प्रत्यदृष्यत
Kaalayavana was seen
Before the eighteenth battle started, in the interval, the hero Kaalayavana was seen on the scene, who was sent there by Naarada.
रुरोध मथुरामेत्य तिसृभिर्म्लेच्छकोटिभि: ।
नृलोके चाप्रतिद्वन्द्वो वृष्णीञ्छ्रुत्वाऽऽत्मसम्मितान् ॥४५॥
रुरोध मथुराम्-एत्य
seized Mathuraa, having come
तिसृभि:-म्लेच्छ-कोटिभि:
with thirty million Mlechchas (barbarians)
नृ-लोके च-अप्रतिद्वन्द्व:
in the human world, and without a rival
वृष्णीन्-श्रुत्वा-आत्म-सम्मितान्
Vrishnees coming to know, with himself equals
He, Kaalayavana, had heard from Naarada, that there was no rival for him in the human world, except for the Vrishnees, who were equal to him, he seized Mathura with thirty million Mlechchas, (barbarians).
तं दृष्ट्वाचिन्तयत् कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षणसहायवान् ।
अहो यदूनां वृजिनं प्राप्तं ह्युभयतो महत् ॥४६॥
तम् दृष्ट्वा-अचिन्तयत्
him seeing thought,
कृष्ण: सङ्कर्षण सहायवान्
Krishna with Balaraama, as company,
अहो यदूनाम् वृजिनम्
'Alas! For the Yaadavaas, calamity
प्राप्तम् हि-उभयत: महत्
has come, indeed from both (sides) great'
Seeing him, Krishna, in the company of Balaraama, thought, 'Alas great calamity has come over the Yaadavaas from both the sides, Jaraasandha and Kaalayavana'.
यवनोऽयं निरुन्धेऽस्मानद्य तावन्महाबल: ।
मागधोऽप्यद्य वा श्वो वा परश्वो वाऽऽगमिष्यति ॥४७॥
यवन:-अयम् निरुन्धे-अस्मान्-
Yavana, this, has besieged us
अद्य तावत्-महा-बल:
today, till then, with great force,
मागध:-अपि-अद्य वा श्व: वा
the Magadha king also today, or tomorrow,
परश्व: वा-आगमिष्यति
day after tomorrow, or, will come
Today, this Yavana has besieged us with his great force, and the king of Magadha will also come, today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.
आवयोर्युध्यतोरस्य यद्यागन्ता जरासुत: ।
बन्धून् वधिष्यत्यथवा नेष्यते स्वपुरं बली ॥४८॥
आवयो:-युध्यतो:-अस्य
as we both contest him,
यदि-आगन्ता जरासुत:
if comes Jaraasandha,
बन्धून् वधिष्यति-अथवा
relatives will kill, otherwise
नेष्यते स्व-पुरम् बली
will captivate, to own city, the valorous
As we are both engaged in contesting with this Yavana, if Jaraasandha comes, he, the valorous, will kill our people, or make them captive and will take them to his own city.
तस्मादद्य विधास्यामो दुर्गं द्विपददुर्गमम् ।
तत्र ज्ञातीन् समाधाय यवनं घातयामहे ॥४९॥
तस्मात्-अद्य विधास्याम:
therefore, today will construct,
दुर्गम् द्विपद-दुर्गमम्
difficult to excess, by humans, a fort,
तत्र ज्ञातीन् समाधाय
there, the relatives placing,
यवनम् घातयामहे
Yavana will kill
Today, therefore, we will construct a fort in-accessible for the human beings. There we will safely put our relatives and then come and kill the Yavana.
इति सम्मन्त्र्य भगवान् दुर्गं द्वादशयोजनम् ।
अन्त:समुद्रे नगरं कृत्स्नाद्भुतमचीकरत् ॥५०॥
इति सम्मन्त्र्य भगवान्
thus deciding, The Lord
दुर्गम् द्वादश-योजनम्
a fort, twelve Yojanas
अन्त:समुद्रे नगरम्
inside the ocean a city,
कृत्स्न-अद्भुतम्-अचीकरत्
in every way wonderful, got constructed
The Lord, deciding thus, got constructed a fort with a city, inside the ocean, which was wonderful in every way.
दृश्यते यत्र हि त्वाष्ट्रं विज्ञानं शिल्पनैपुणम् ।
रथ्याचत्वरवीथीभिर्यथावास्तु विनिर्मितम् ॥५१॥
दृश्यते यत्र हि त्वाष्ट्रम्
are seen where, indeed, Twashta's
विज्ञानम् शिल्प-नैपुणम्
science and architectural expertise,
रथ्या-चत्वर-वीथीभि:-
(consisting) with roads, crossings and lanes,
यथा-वास्तु विनिर्मितम्
as by the Vaastu (science) constructed
Where, there were seen the application of Twashtra's science of construction and the expertise of architecture, with roads and crossings and lanes, as is constructed according to the science of Vaastu.
सुरद्रुमलतोद्यानविचित्रोपवनान्वितम् ।
हेमशृङ्गैर्दिविस्पृग्भि: स्फाटिकाट्टालगोपुरै: ॥५२॥
सुर-द्रुम-लता-उद्यान-
celestial trees, creepers' gardens
विचित्र-उपवन-अन्वितम्
wonderful groves consisting of
हेम-शृङ्गै:-दिवि-स्पृग्भि:
golden domes, heavens touching
स्फाटिक-अट्टाल-गोपुरै:
by crystal attics and gateways
It consisted of gardens with celestial trees and creepers, and wonderful groves, and golden domes touching the heavens, and crystal attics and gateways.
राजतारकुटै: कोष्ठैर्हेमकुम्भैरलङ्कृतै: ।
रत्नकूटैगृहैर्हैमैर्महामरकतस्थलै: ॥५३॥
राजत-आरकुटै: कोष्ठै:-
flaunting brass barns,
हेम-कुम्भै:-अलङ्कृतै:
golden pitchers, adorned,
रत्न-कूटै:-गृहै:-हेमै:-
gems inlaid houses of gold,
महा-मरकत-स्थलै:
with emerald floors
It flaunted brass barns and was adorned with golden pitchers, and houses were inlaid of gold, with gems, and floors of emerald.
वास्तोष्पतीनां च गृहैर्वलभीभिश्च निर्मितम् ।
चातुर्वर्ण्यजनाकीर्णं यदुदेवगृहोल्लसत् ॥५४॥
वास्तो:-पतीनाम् च गृहै:-
of the Vaastu gods and temples,
वलभीभि:-च निर्मितम्
and sheds constructed
चातुर्वर्ण्य-जन-आकीर्णम्
of the four Varnas' people spread
यदु-देव-गृह-उल्लसत्
and of the Yadu's prominent houses shone
With temples and sheds constructed for gods of Vaastu, it was spread with the houses for the people of the four Varnas, and shone with the houses of the prominent people of the Yadus.
सुधर्मां पारिजातं च महेन्द्र: प्राहिणोद्-हरे: ।
यत्र चावस्थितो मर्त्यो मर्त्यधर्मैर्न युज्यते ॥५५॥
सुधर्माम् पारिजातम्
Sudharmaa Paareejaatas
च महेन्द्र: प्राहिणोद्-हरे:
and Indra sent for Shree Hari
यत्र-अवस्थित: मर्त्य:
where staying, a mortal,
मर्त्य-धर्मै:-न युज्यते
by mortal characteristics is not bound
Indra sent his meeting hall Sudharmaa and the celestial tree Paareejaatas for Shree Hari. Staying near which a mortal is not bound by the characteristics of the mortals.
श्यामैककर्णान् वरुणो हयाञ्छुक्लान् मनोजवान् ।
अष्टौ निधिपति: कोशान् लोकपालो निजोदयान् ॥५६॥
श्याम-एक-कर्णान् वरुण:
dark in one ear, Varuna,
हयान्-शुक्लान् मनोजवान्
horses white with thought like speed,
अष्टौ निधिपति: कोशान्
eight, the lord of treasures, (Kubera), treasuries,
लोकपाल: निज-उदयान्
the guardians of the spheres, own riches
Varuna sent white horses with one dark ear, which had thought like speed. The lord of treasures, Kubera, sent the eight treasuries, and the guardians of the spheres sent their own peculiar riches.
यद् यद् भगवता दत्तमाधिपत्यं स्वसिद्धये ।
सर्वं प्रत्यर्पयामासुर्हरौ भूमिगते नृप ॥५७॥
यत् यत् भगवता दत्तम्-
all that by The Lord granted
आधिपत्यम् स्वसिद्धये
the lordship, for own purpose to fulfil,
सर्वम् प्रति-अर्पयामासु:-
all that returned
हरौ भूमिगते नृप
to The Two Lords, on earth descended, O King!
O King! Those lordships which The Lord had granted to the guardians, to fulfil their purpose, all of those were returned by them to The Two Lords when They descended on earth.
तत्र योगप्रभावेण नीत्वा सर्वजनं हरि: ।
प्रजापालेन रामेण कृष्ण: समनुमन्त्रित: ।
निर्जगाम पुरद्वारात् पद्ममाले निरायुध: ॥५८॥
तत्र योग-प्रभावेण
there, by the effect of Yoga,
नीत्वा सर्व-जनम् हरि:
taking all the people, Shree Hari,
प्रजापालेन रामेण
with the peoples' protector Balaraama
कृष्ण: समनुमन्त्रित:
Krishna conferred,
निर्जगाम पुर-द्वारात्
and set out of the city's gate,
पद्म-माले निरायुध:
with a lotus garland, and without weapons
There, to that resort, Shree Hari took all the people with the effect of His Yoga. Then He conferred with the guardian of the people, Balaraama, and set out of the gate of the city, with a garland of lotuses, and without any weapons.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे दुर्गनिवेशनं नाम पञ्चाशत्तम: अध्याय: ॥५०॥
Thus ends the fiftieth discourse entitled 'The Lord ensconces Himself in a fortress', in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
