Shree Shuka said -
वैदर्भ्या: स तु सन्देशं निशम्य यदुनन्दन: ।
प्रगृह्य पाणिना पाणिं प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
वैदर्भ्या: स: तु सन्देशम्
of the Vidarbha princess, He, indeed message
निशम्य यदु-नन्दन:
hearing, The Yadu's delight, Krishna
प्रगृह्य पाणिना पाणिम्
holding in hand the hand (of the Braahmana)
प्रहसन्-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
laughingly, this said,…
Indeed, He, The delight of the Yadus', Krishna, having heard the message of the princess of Vidarbha, holding in His won hand, the hand of the Braahmana, laughingly, said this,…
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
तथाहमपि तच्चित्तो निद्रां च न लभे निशि ।
वेदाहं रुक्मिणा द्वेषान्ममोद्वाहो निवारित: ॥२॥
तथा-अहम्-अपि तत्-चित्त:
in the same manner, I (have) also in her, mind set
निद्राम् च न लभे निशि
sleep and do not get in night
वेद-अहम् रुक्मिणा द्वेषात्-
know I by Rukmi with grudge,
मम-उद्वाह: निवारित:
My marriage is stopped
In the same manner, My mind also is set in her, and I do not get sleep in the night. I know that Rukmi, because of having a grudge, has stopped my marriage.
तामानयिष्य उन्मथ्य राजन्यापसदान् मृधे ।
मत्परामनवद्याङ्गीमेधसोऽग्निशिखामिव ॥३॥
ताम्-आनयिष्ये उन्मथ्य
her will bring, defeating
राजन्य-अपसदान् मृधे
the kings, the evil, in battle,
मत्-पराम्-अनवद्य-अङ्गीम्-
to Me devoted, of flawless physique
एधस:-अग्नि-शिखाम्-इव
from the fuel, fire flame like
Defeating the evil kings, I will bring her, the princess of flawless limbs, who is devoted to Me, like the flame of fire from the wood.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
उद्वाहर्क्षं च विज्ञाय रुक्मिण्या मधुसूदन: ।
रथ: संयुज्यतामाशु दारुकेत्याह सारथिम् ॥४॥
उद्वाह-ऋक्षम् च विज्ञाय
the marriage time and knowing
रुक्मिण्या मधुसूदन:
of Rukmini, Madhusoodana, (Krishna)
रथ: संयुज्यताम्-आशु
'the chariot get ready, soon,
दारुक-इति-आह सारथिम्
O Daaruka', this said to the charioteer
Madhusoodana, Krishna, came to know of the time of marriage of Rukmini from the Braahmana, and said to the charioteer, 'O Daaruka! Get the chariot ready soon.'
स चाश्वै: शैव्यसुग्रीवमेघपुष्पबलाहकै: ।
युक्तं रथमुपानीय तस्थौ प्राञ्जलिरग्रत: ॥५॥
स: च-अश्वै: शैव्य-सुग्रीव-
he, and with horses Shaivya, Sugreeva,
मेघपुष्प-बलाहकै:
Meghapushpa and Balaahaka
युक्तम् रथम्-उपानीय
drawn chariot brought
तस्थौ प्राञ्जलि:-अग्रत:
and waited with folded hands, in front
He brought a chariot drawn by the horse, Shaivya, Sugreeva, Meghapushpa and Balaahaka, and waited in front with his hands folded.
आरुह्य स्यन्दनं शौरिर्द्विजमारोप्य तूर्णगै: ।
आनर्त्तादेकरात्रेण विदर्भानगमत् हयै: ॥६॥
आरुह्य स्यन्दनम् शौरि:-
mounting the chariot, Shauree, Krishna,
द्विजम्-आरोप्य तूर्ण-गै:
the Braahmana picking up, by the swift going
आनर्त्तात्-एक-रात्रेण
from Aanarta, in one night
विदर्भान्-अगमत् हयै:
to Vidarbha came, with the horses
Shauree, Krishna, mounted the chariot and picked up the Braahmana, and in one night from Aanarta, reached Vidarbha, by the swift horses.
राजा स कुण्डिनपति: पुत्रस्नेहवशं गत: ।
शिशुपालाय स्वां कन्यां दास्यन् कर्माण्यकारयत् ॥७॥
राजा स: कुण्डिन-पति:
king that, of Kundini the ruler,
पुत्र-स्नेह-वशं गत:
for son's love influenced
शिशुपालाय स्वाम् कन्याम्
to Shishupaala, own daughter
दास्यन् कर्माणि-कारयत्
to give, arrangements made
The king, the ruler of Kundini, influenced by the love for his son, made arrangements to give his own daughter to Shishupaala.
पुरं सम्मृष्टसंसिक्तमार्गरथ्याचतुष्पथम् ।
चित्रध्वजपताकाभिस्तोरणै: समलङ्कृतम् ॥८॥
पुरम् सम्मृष्ट-संसिक्त-
the city well swept, sprinkled with water,
मार्ग-रथ्या-चतुष्पथम्
the roads, with ways of four crossings
चित्र-ध्वज-पताकाभि:-
with colourful flags, festoons,
तोरणै: समलङ्कृतम्
arches, well decorated
The city with four way crossings, was sell swept, the roads were sprinkled with water, and it was well decorated with colourful flags and festoons and arches.
स्रग्गन्धमाल्याभरणैर्विरजोऽम्बरभूषितै: ।
जुष्टं स्त्रीपुरुषै: श्रीमद्गृहैरगुरुधूपितै: ॥९॥
स्रक्-गन्ध-माल्य-आभरणै:-
with garlands, sandal paste, necklaces, ornaments,
विरजो:-अम्बर-भूषितै:
and clean clothes decked
जुष्टम् स्त्री-पुरुषै:
crowded with women and men
श्रीमद्-गृहै:-अगुरु-धूपितै:
and by effluent mansions, with Aguru incense perfumed
It was crowded by men and women decked with flower garlands, sandal paste, necklaces, ornaments, and clean clothes, and by mansions of the effluent perfumed by the incense of Aguru.
पितृन् देवान् समभ्यर्च्य विप्रांश्च विधिवन्नृप ।
भोजयित्वा यथान्यायं वाचयामास मङ्गलम् ॥१०॥
पितृन् देवान् समभ्यर्च्य
the manes and gods, worshipped well
विप्रान्-च विधिवत्-नृप
the Braahmanas and duly, the king
भोजयित्वा यथा-न्यायम्
feeding as required,
वाचयामास मङ्गलम्
read the benedictions
The king duly worshipped the manes and gods, and the Braahmanas, fed them as required and then got the benedictions to be read.
सुस्नातां सुदतीं कन्यां कृतकौतुकमङ्गलाम् ।
अहतांशुकयुग्मेन भूषितां भूषणोत्तमै: ॥११॥
सुस्नाताम् सुदतीम् कन्याम्
well bathed, the charming teethed, daughter,
कृत-कौतुक-मङ्गलाम्
adorned with the thread auspicious,
अहत-अंशुक-युग्मेन
with new clothes pair
भूषिताम् भूषण-उत्तमै:
adorned, with ornaments excellent
The charming teethed daughter of the king was well bathed and was adorned with the sacred thread (Mangala-sutra) new pair of clothes and excellent ornaments.
चक्रु: सामर्ग्यजुर्मन्त्रैर्वध्वा रक्षां द्विजोत्तमा: ।
पुरोहितोऽथर्वविद् वै जुहाव ग्रहशान्तये ॥१२॥
चक्रु: साम-ऋक्-यजु:-मन्त्रै:
conducted by Saama, Rik and Yajur mantras,
वध्वा रक्षाम् द्विज-उत्तमा:
the bride's safety, Braahmanas foremost,
पुरोहित:-अथर्व-विद्
the family priest, the knower of Atharva Veda
वै जुहाव ग्रह-शान्तये
indeed put oblation for the planets' propitiation
The foremost of the Braahmanas recited the mantras from Saama, Rik and Yajur Vedas, to ensure the safety of the bride, and the family priest indeed poured oblation in the sacred fire to propitiate the planets.
हिरण्यरूप्यवासांसि तिलांश्च गुडमिश्रितान् ।
प्रादाद् धेनूश्च विप्रेभ्यो राजा विधिविदां वर: ॥१३॥
हिरण्य-रूप्य-वासांसि
gold, silver, garments,
तिलान्-च गुड-मिश्रितान्
sesame seeds and jaggery mixed
प्रादाद् धेनू:-च विप्रेभ्य:
gave cows and to the Braahmanas
राजा विधि-विदाम्-वर:
the king, in scriptural procedures' knowledge, best
The king, who was best in the knowledge of scriptural proceedings, gave gold, silver, garments, cows and sesame seeds mixed with jaggery to the Braahmanas.
एवं चेदिपती राजा दमघोष: सुताय वै ।
कारयामास मन्त्रज्ञै: सर्वमभ्युदयोचितम् ॥१४॥
एवम् चेदिपती राजा
thus, the Chedi ruler,
दमघोष: सुताय वै
king Damaghosha for the son, indeed
कारयामास मन्त्रज्ञै:
made to be done by the mantra knowers
सर्वम्-अभ्युदय-उचितम्
all for the auspiciousness necessary
In this manner, the ruler of Chedi, king Damaghosha, for his son, Shishupaala, made all that to be done that was necessary for auspiciousness, by the knowers of the mantras.
मदच्युद्भिर्गजानीकै: स्यन्दनैर्हेममालिभि: ।
पत्त्यश्वसङ्कुलै: सैन्यै: परीत: कुन्डिनं ययौ ॥१५॥
मद-च्युद्भि:-गज-अनीकै:
temporal fluid oozing elephants' armies
स्यन्दनै:-हेम-मालिभि:
chariots with golden strings
पत्ति-अश्व-सङ्कुलै: सैन्यै:
foot soldiers and horses, with cavalry,
परीत: कुन्डिनम् ययौ
surrounded, to Kundini went
He went to Kundini surrounded by chariots with golden cords with armies of elephants oozing temporal fluid, foot soldiers, horses and cavalry.
तं वै विदर्भाधिपति: समभ्येत्याभिपूज्य च ।
निवेशयामास मुदा कल्पितान्यनिवेशने ॥१६॥
तम् वै विदर्भ-अधिपति:
Him, indeed, the Vidarbha ruler
समभ्येत्य-अभिपूज्य च
escorting and honouring well,
निवेशयामास मुदा
lodged happily
कल्पितानि-अनिवेशने
in the constructed mansion
The ruler of Vidarbha, Bheeshmaka's, indeed, happily escorted him and lodged him in the specially constructed mansion.
तत्र शाल्वो जरासन्धो दन्तवक्त्रो विदूरथ: ।
आजग्मुश्चैद्यपक्षीया: पौण्ड्रकाद्या: सहस्रश: ॥१७॥
तत्र शाल्व: जरासन्ध:
there, Shaalva, Jaraasandha,
दन्तवक्त्र: विदूरथ:
Dantavaktra, Vidooratha,
आजग्मु:-चैद्य-पक्षीया:
came, of Chaidya the allies,
पौण्ड्रक-आद्या: सहस्रश:
Paundraka and others, in thousands
The allies of the Chaaya's, came there in thousands, Shaalva, Jaraasandha, Dantavaktra, Vidooratha, Paundraka and others.
कृष्णरामद्विषो यत्ता: कन्यां चैद्याय साधितुम् ।
यद्यागत्य हरेत् कृष्णो रामाद्यैर्यदुभिर्वृत: ॥१८॥
कृष्ण-राम-द्विष: यत्ता:
Krishna and Ram's inimical those all
कन्याम् चैद्याय साधितुम्
the girl, to the Chedi' wanting to be given,
यदि-आगत्य हरेत् कृष्ण:
if comes and takes away Krishna (the bride)
राम-आद्यै:-यदुभि:-वृत:
by Balaraama and other, Yadus accompanied
All those who wanted the girl to be given to the Chedi, and were inimical to Krishna and Balaraama, came there, in the event that Krishna comes and takes away the bride, accompanied by Balaraama and the other Yadus.
योत्स्याम: संहतास्तेन इति निश्चितमानसा: ।
आजग्मुर्भूभुज: सर्वे समग्रबलवाहना: ॥१९॥
योत्स्याम: संहता:-तेन
will fight together with Him
इति निश्चित-मानसा:
thus making up minds
आजग्मु:-भूभुज: सर्वे
came the kings all
समग्र-बल-वाहना:
entire army and mounts
'Together we will fight with Him,' thus making up there minds, all the kings came there along with their entire armies and mounts.
श्रुत्वैतद् भगवान् रामो विपक्षीयनृपोद्यमम् ।
कृष्णं चैकं गतं हर्तुं कन्यां कलहशङ्कित: ॥२०॥
श्रुत्वा-एतद् भगवान् राम:
hearing of this, The Lord Balaraama
विपक्षीय-नृप:-उद्यमम्
of the rival kings, efforts
कृष्णम् च-एकम् गतम् हर्तुम्
Krishna and alone having gone to take away
कन्याम् कलह-शङ्कित:
the girl, strife apprehended
The Lord Balaraama, having heard of the efforts of the rival kings, and that Krishna had gone alone to take away the girl, apprehended strife.
बलेन महता सार्धं भ्रातृस्नेहपरिप्लुत: ।
त्वरित: कुण्डिनं प्रागाद् गजाश्वरथपत्तिभि: ॥२१॥
बलेन महता सार्धम्

भ्रातृ-स्नेह-परिप्लुत:
by brother's love overcome
त्वरित: कुण्डिनम् प्रागाद्
hurriedly to Kundina proceeded
गज-अश्व रथ-पत्तिभि:
with elephants, horses, chariots and foot soldiers
Overcome with the love for His brother, Balaraama proceeded to Kundina, with a huge army of elephants horses, chariots and foot soldiers.
भीष्मकन्या वारारोहा काङ्क्षन्त्यागमनं हरे: ।
प्रत्यापत्तिमपश्यन्ती द्विजस्याचिन्तयत्तदा ॥२२॥
भीष्म-कन्या वारारोहा
Bheeshmaka's daughter, the beautiful,
काङ्क्षन्ति-आगमनम् हरे:
yearning for arrival of Shree Hari
प्रत्यापत्तिम्-अपश्यन्ती
the return not seeing
द्विजस्य-अचिन्तयत्-तदा
of the Braahmana, thought then
The beautiful daughter of Bheeshmaka's, yearning for the arrival of Shree Hari, Krishna, and not seeing the Braahmana return, then thought.
अहो त्रियामान्तरित उद्वाहो मेऽल्पराधस: ।
नागच्छत्यरविन्दाक्षो नाहं वेद्म्यत्र कारणम् ।
सोऽपि नावर्ततेऽद्यापि मत्सन्देशहरो द्विज: ॥२३॥
अहो त्रियाम-अन्तरित
Oh! At a night's interval
उद्वाह: मे-अल्प-राधस:
wedding mine, of little luck
न-आगच्छति-अरविन्द-अक्ष:
is not coming, The Lotus eyed
न-अहम् वेद्मि-अत्र कारणम्
do not I know, here the reason
स:-अपि न-आवर्तते-अद्य-अपि
he also does not return, till now even,
मत्-सन्देश-हर: द्विज:
my message carrier Braahmana
Oh! after the interval of a night is my wedding, unlucky that I am. I do not know the reason why The Lotus eyed Lord has not come as yet. Even the Braahmana, the carrier of my message has not returned.
अपि मय्यनवद्यात्मा दृष्ट्वा किञ्चिज्जुगुप्सितम् ।
मत्पाणिग्रहणे नूनं नायाति हि कृतोद्यम: ॥२४॥
अपि मयि-अनवद्य-आत्मा
is it, in me, The faultless Soul
दृष्ट्वा किञ्चित्-जुगुप्सितम्
having noticed something unpleasant
मत्-पाणि-ग्रहणे नूनम्
in my marriage certainly
न-आयाति हि कृत-उद्यम:
will not come, indeed by making an effort
It may be that The fault-less Soul has noticed something unpleasant in me, then certainly He will not make an effort to come in my marriage, indeed.
दुर्भगाया न मे धाता नानुकूलो महेश्वर: ।
देवी वा विमुखा गौरी रुद्राणी गिरिजा सती ॥२५॥
दुर्भगाया: न मे धाता
for the unfortunate, not me, Brahmaa,
न-अनुकूल: महेश्वर:
not pleased is Shankara
देवी वा विमुखा गौरी
the Goddess or is unfavourable, Gauri,
रुद्राणी गिरिजा सती
Rudra's wife, Himaalaya's daughter, the virtuous
With me, the unfortunate, Brahmaa and Shankara are not pleased, or The Goddess Paarvati, the virtuous wife of Rudra, the daughter of Himaalaya is unfavourable.
एवं चिन्तयती बाला गोविन्दहृतमानसा ।
न्यमीलयत कालज्ञा नेत्रे चाश्रुकलाकुले ॥२६॥
एवम् चिन्तयती बाला
thus thinking, the maiden,
गोविन्द-हृत-मानसा
by Govinda captivated mind
न्यमीलयत कालज्ञा नेत्रे
closed, she, the time knower, the eyes,
च-अश्रु कला-आकुले
and, by tear drops filled
The maiden, whose mind was captivated by Govinda, and knew that the time was not right to cry, closed her eyes, which were filled with tear drops.
एवं वध्वा: प्रतीक्षन्त्या गोविन्दागमनं नृप ।
वाम ऊरुर्भुजो नेत्रमस्फुरन् प्रियभाषिण: ॥२७॥
एवम् वध्वा: प्रतीक्षन्त्या:
thus of the bride awaiting
गोविन्द-आगमनम् नृप
Govinda's arrival, O King!
वाम ऊरु:-भुज: नेत्रम्-
left thigh, arm and eye
अस्फुरन् प्रिय-भाषिण:
twitched, good tidings informing
O King! In this manner, as the bride was awaiting the arrival of Govinda, her left thigh, arm and eye started twitching, informing of good tidings.
अथ कृष्णविनिर्दिष्ट: स एव द्विजसत्तम: ।
अन्त:पुरचरीं देवीं राजपुत्रीं ददर्श ह ॥२८॥
अथ कृष्ण-विनिर्दिष्ट:
then, by Krishna directed
स: एव द्विज-सत्तम:
that same Braahmana the foremost
अन्त:पुर-चरीम् देवीम्
in the inner chambers living Rukmini,
राजपुत्रीम् ददर्श ह
the princess saw indeed
Then as directed by Krishna, that same Braahmana, the foremost, went and saw the princess Rukmini who was living in the inner chambers.
सा तं प्रहृष्टवदनमव्यग्रात्मगतिं सती ।
आलक्ष्य लक्षणाभिज्ञा समपृच्छच्छुचिस्मिता ॥२९॥
सा तं प्रहृष्ट-वदनम्-
she, him, of pleasant face,
अव्यग्र-आत्म-गतिम्
with unfaltering own gait,
सती आलक्ष्य लक्षण-अभिज्ञा
the virtuous (maiden) seeing, by expression knowing
समपृच्छत्-शुचि-स्मिता
inquired in detail brightly smiling
Brightly smiling, she, the virtuous maiden, seeing him of cheerful face, and unfaltering gait, understanding from his expressions, inquired him in detail.
तस्या आवेदयत् प्राप्तं शशंस यदुनन्दनम् ।
उक्तं च सत्यवचनमात्मोपनयनं प्रति ॥३०॥
तस्या: आवेदयत् प्राप्तम्
to her conveyed, (His) having come,
शशंस यदु-नन्दनम्
praising Him, The Yadu's delight
उक्तम् च सत्य-वचनम्-
said and the true statement
आत्म-उपनयनम् प्रति
(her) own taking away about
He conveyed to her of the coming of the delight of Yadu's, Krishna, praised Him, and also assured about the true statement about her taking away.
तमागतं समाज्ञाय वैदर्भी हृष्टमानसा ।
न पश्यन्ती ब्राह्मणाय प्रियमन्यन्ननाम सा ॥३१॥
तम्-आगतम् समाज्ञाय
him having come, knowing
वैदर्भी हृष्ट-मानसा
the Vidarbha princess, happy in mind,
न पश्यन्ती ब्राह्मणाय
not finding for the Braahmana
प्रियम्-अन्यत्-ननाम सा
worthwhile anything else, bowed (to him) she
The princess of Vidarbha, having come to know that He (Krishna) had arrived, was mentally very happy. Not finding anything worth while, to gift to the Braahmana, she bowed to him.
प्राप्तौ श्रुत्वा स्वदुहितुरुद्वाहप्रेक्षणोत्सुकौ ।
अभ्ययात्तूर्यघोषेण रामकृष्णौ समर्हणै: ॥३२॥
प्राप्तौ श्रुत्वा स्व-दुहितु:-
have come, hearing own daughter's
उद्वाह-प्रेक्षण-उत्सुकौ
wedding to witness eager
अभ्ययात्-तूर्य-घोषेण
welcomed by trumpet blowing
राम-कृष्णौ सम्-अर्हणै:
Balaraama and Krishna and with worshipping articles
The king of Vidarbha, Bheeshmaka's heard that Balaraama and Krishna had come to witness the wedding of his own daughter. He went forth and welcomed Them with the blowing of trumpets and articles of worship.
मधुपर्कमुपानीय वासांसि विरजांसि स: ।
उपायनान्यभीष्टानि विधिवत् समपूजयत् ॥३३॥
मधुपर्कम्-उपानीय
Madhupark, offering,
वासांसि विरजांसि स:
garments immaculate, he
उपायनानि-अभीष्टानि
gifts of various kinds
विधिवत् समपूजयत्
as per ordained, worshipped (Them)
He offered to Them Madhupark, an auspicious welcome drink, immaculate garments and various gifts, and worshipped Them as ordained in the scriptures.
तयोर्निवेशनं श्रीमदुपकल्प्य महामति: ।
ससैन्ययो: सानुगयोरातिथ्यं विदधे यथा ॥३४॥
तयो:-र्निवेशनम् श्रीमत्-
of Them both, lodging beautiful
उपकल्प्य महा-मति:
arranged, the highly intelligent
स-सैन्ययो: सानुगयो:-
along with Their armies, and with Their followers
आतिथ्यम् विदधे यथा
hospitality offered accordingly
The highly intelligent king, arranged for a beautiful lodging for both of Them and also for Their armies and followers, and then offered hospitality to them accordingly.
एवं राज्ञां समेतानां यथावीर्यं यथावय: ।
यथाबलं यथावित्तं सर्वै: कामै: समर्हयत् ॥३५॥
एवम् राज्ञाम् समेतानाम्
thus, to the kings assembled,
यथा-वीर्यम् यथा-वय:
according to valour, according to age,
यथा-बलम् यथा-वित्तम्
according to might, and according to wealth
सर्वै: कामै: समर्हयत्
all desired objects made available
Thus, to the kings who had assembled there, all objects desired by them were made available, according to their valour, age, might and financial status.
कृष्णमागतमाकर्ण्य विदर्भपुरवासिन: ।
आगत्य नेत्राञ्जलिभि: पपुस्तन्मुखपङ्कजम् ॥३६॥
कृष्णम्-आगतम्-आकर्ण्य
Krishna has come, hearing,
विदर्भ-पुर-वासिन:
Vidarbha city's residents
आगत्य नेत्र-अञ्जलिभि:
came and with the eye cups
पपु:-तत-मुख-पङ्कजम्
drank His face lotus
The residents of the city of Vidarbha, having heard of Krishna's coming, came and as though drank the sight of His lotus face with the cup of both their eyes.
अस्यैव भार्या भवितुं रुक्मिण्यर्हति नापरा ।
असावप्यनवद्यात्मा भैष्म्या: समुचित: पति: ॥३७॥
अस्य-एव भार्या भवितुम्
His only, wife to be
रुक्मिणी-अर्हति न-अपरा
Rukmini deserves, not another
असौ-अपि-अनवद्य-आत्मा
He also, The faultless Self
भैष्म्या: समुचित: पति:
of Bheeshmaka's daughter worthy husband
'Only Rukmini deserves to be His wife, and no other. He also, The faultless Self, is worthy of being the husband of Bheeshmaka's daughter.'
किञ्चित्सुचरितं यन्नस्तेन तुष्टस्त्रिलोककृत् ।
अनुगृह्णातु गृह्णातु वैदर्भ्या: पाणिमच्युत: ॥३८॥
किञ्चित्-सुचरितम् यत्-न:-
some meritorious (deed), which by us,
तेन तुष्ट:-त्रि-लोक-कृत्
by that, gratified, The three worlds' Creator,
अनुगृह्णातु गृह्णातु
be graceful and may take

Vidarbha princess's hand, The Immortal Lord
By some meritorious deed that we may have done, May The Immortal Lord, The Creator of the three worlds, be gratified, and be graceful to take the hand of the princess of Vidarbha.
एवं प्रेमकलाबद्धा वदन्ति स्म पुरौकस: ।
कन्या चान्त:पुरात् प्रागाद् भटैर्गुप्ताम्बिकालयम् ॥३९॥
एवम् प्रेम-कला-बद्धा
thus by the affection cord bound
वदन्ति स्म पुरौकस:
said the citizens
कन्या च-अन्त:पुरात् प्रागाद्
the girl and from the inner chambers went out
भटै:-गुप्ता-अम्बिका-आलयम्
by soldiers guarded, to Ambika's temple
Thus spoke the citizens who were bound by the cord of love for Rukmini. And the maiden went out of the inner chambers, to the temple of Goddess Ambikaa, guarded by soldiers.
पद्भ्यां विनिर्ययौ द्रष्टुं भवान्या: पादपल्लवम् ।
सा चानुध्यायती सम्यङ् मुकुन्दचरणाम्बुजम् ॥४०॥
पद्भ्याम् विनिर्ययौ द्रष्टुम्
on foot embarked to see
भवान्या: पादपल्लवम्
Goddess Parvati's, feet petals like
सा च-अनुध्यायती सम्यङ्
she, and contemplating simultaneously,
मुकुन्द-चरण-अम्बुजम्
Mukunda's feet lotus
She embarked on foot to see the petals like feet of the Goddess Paarvati, and contemplated simultaneously on Mukunda's lotus feet.
यतवाङ्मातृभि: सार्धं सखीभि: परिवारिता ।
गुप्ता राजभटै: शूरै: सन्नद्धैरुद्यतायुधै: ।
मृदङ्गशङ्खपणवास्तूर्यभेर्यश्च जघ्निरे ॥४१॥
यत-वाक्-मातृभि: सार्धम्
with controlled speech, mothers along with,
सखीभि: परिवारिता
by companions surrounded,
गुप्ता राज-भटै: शूरै:
guarded by royal soldiers powerful
सन्नद्धै:-उद्यत-आयुधै:
clad with armour and uplifting the weapons
मृदङ्ग-शङ्ख-पणवा:-तूर्य-
big drums, conches, bells, trumpets
भेर्य:-च जघ्निरे
and clarinets were sounded
She had controlled her speech, and was going with her mother and other elderly women. She was surrounded by her female companions, and guarded by royal soldiers clad in armours who had uplifted arms. Big drums, conchs, bells, trumpets and clarinets were sounded as she went.
नानोपहारबलिभिर्वारमुख्या: सहस्रश: ।
स्रग्गन्धवस्त्राभरणै:र्द्विजपत्न्य: स्वलङ्कृता: ॥४२॥
नाना-उपहार-बलिभि:-
with various presents and articles of worship
वार-मुख्या: सहस्रश:
the dancing girls, leading, in thousands
स्रक्-गन्ध-वस्त्र-आभरणै:-
with garlands, sandal paste, garments, ornaments,
द्विज-पत्न्य: स्व-लङ्कृता:
the Braahmana wives themselves adorned
There were thousands of leading dancing girls carrying various presents and articles of worship. The wives of the Braahmanas had adorned themselves with garlands, sandal paste, garments and ornaments.
गायन्त्यश्च स्तुवन्तश्च गायका वाद्यवादका: ।
परिवार्य वधूं जग्मु: सूतमागधवन्दिन: ॥४३॥
गायन्त्य:-च स्तुवन्त:-च
singing and praising and
गायका: वाद्य-वादका:
the singers, and musical instrument players,
परिवार्य वधूम् जग्मु:
surrounding the bride went
सूत-मागध-वन्दिन:
the Sootas, Maagadhas and the Vandis
The singers sang and praised, the musicians played the instruments, and the Sootas, Maagadhas and the Vandis, went surrounding the bride.
आसाद्य देवीसदनं धौतपादकराम्बुजा ।
उपस्पृश्य शुचि: शान्ता प्रविवेशाम्बिकान्तिकम् ॥४४॥
आसाद्य देवी-सदनम्
reaching the Goddess's temple
धौत-पाद-कर-अम्बुजा
washed the feet and hand lotuses,
उपस्पृश्य शुचि: शान्ता
sipped water, purified, and tranquil,
प्रविवेश-अम्बिका-अन्तिकम्
entered in Ambika's presence
She reached the temple of the Goddess, washed her lotus feet and hands. Purified and tranquil, she entered in the presence of Goddess Ambikaa.
तां वै प्रवयसो बालां विधिज्ञा विप्रयोषित: ।
भवानीं वन्दयाञ्चक्रुर्भवपत्नीं भवान्विताम् ॥४५॥
ताम् वै प्रवयस: बालाम्
her, indeed, the elderly ladies, the girl,
विधिज्ञा: विप्र-योषत:
the ritual knowers, Braahmana wives,
भवानीम् वन्दयान्-चक्रु:-
to Goddess Bhavaani worship did
भव-पत्नीम् भव-अन्विताम्
Lord Shiva's wife, Lord Shiva together with
The elderly ladies, the wives of the Braahmanas, who knew the rituals, made the girl worship Goddess Bhavaani, the wife of Lord Shiva, together with Lord Shiva.
नमस्ये त्वाम्बिकेऽभीक्ष्णं स्वसन्तानयुतां शिवाम् ।
भूयात् पतिर्मे भगवान् कृष्णस्तदनुमोदताम् ॥४६॥
नमस्ये त्वा-अम्बिके-अभीक्ष्णम्
bow to You, O Ambikaa! again and again,
स्व-सन्तान-युताम् शिवाम्
Your children, along with (and) Lord Shiva
भूयात् पति:-मे भगवान्
May be husband my Lord
कृष्ण:-तत्-अनुमोदताम्
Krishna, that do agree to
'I again and again bow to You, O Ambikaa! Along with Your children and Lord Shiva. May I have Lord Krishna as my husband, do consent to that.'
अद्भिर्गन्धाक्षतैर्धूपैर्वास:स्रङ्गमाल्यभूषणै: ।
नानोपहारबलिभि: प्रदीपावलिभि: पृथक् ॥४७॥
अद्भि:-गन्ध-अक्षतै:-धूपै:-
with water, sandal paste, unbroken rice, incense,
वास:-स्रक्-माल्य-भूषणै:
clothes, garlands, necklace and ornaments
नाना-उपहार-बलिभि:
various presents, and edibles,
प्रदीप-अवलिभि: पृथक्
lamps' lines, separately
Worshipped with water, sandal paste, unbroken rice, incense, clothes, garlands, necklace and ornaments, various presents, and edibles, lines of lamps, separately,…
विप्रस्त्रिय: पतिमतीस्तथा तै: समपूजयत् ।
लवणापूपताम्बूलकण्ठसूत्रफलेक्षुभि: ॥४८॥
विप्र-स्त्रिय: पतिमती:-
the Braahmana women, (who) had husbands, and,
तथा तै: समपूजयत्
by them worshipped,
लवण-आपूप-ताम्बूल-
salt, milk cakes, beetle leaves,
कण्ठ-सूत्र-फल-ईक्षुभि:
neck thread (coloured), fruits and sugar cane
She was worshipped by the Braahmana women who had husbands, with those articles and also with salt, milk cake, beetle leaves, coloured auspicious neck thread, fruits and sugar cane.
तस्यै स्त्रियस्ता: प्रददु: शेषां युयुजुराशिष: ।
ताभ्यो देव्यै नमश्चक्रे शेषां च जगृहे वधू: ॥४९॥
तस्यै स्त्रिय:-ता: प्रददु:
to her the women those gave
शेषाम् युयुजु:-आशिष:
the left over, and added (their) blessings
ताभ्य: देव्यै: नम:-चक्रे
to them ladies bowed down
शेषाम् च जगृहे वधू:
and the left over accepted the bride
The women gave the left over articles to the bride, and also added their own blessings. The bride bowed to the ladies and accepted the left over articles.
मुनिव्रतमथ त्यक्त्वा निश्चक्रामाम्बिकागृहात् ।
प्रगृह्य पाणिना भृत्यां रत्नमुद्रोपशोभिना ॥५०॥
मुनि-व्रतम्-अथ त्यक्त्वा
silence vow then giving up
निश्चक्राम-अम्बिका-गृहात्
came out of Ambika's temple
प्रगृह्य पाणिना भृत्याम्
holding on with the hand a maid servant
रत्न-मुद्र-उपशोभिना
by jewelled rings brilliant
She gave up the vow of silence, and came out of Ambika's temple. With her hand, brilliant with jewelled rings, she held on to a servant maid.
तां देवमायामिव वीरमोहिनीं सुमध्यमां कुण्डलमण्डिताननाम् ।
श्यामां नितम्बार्पितरत्नमेखलां व्यञ्जत्स्तनीं कुन्तलशङ्कितेक्षणाम् ॥५१॥
ताम् देव-मायाम्-इव
her, The Lord's Maayaa like,
वीर-मोहिनीम् सुमध्यमाम्
to the warriors charming, slender waisted,
कुण्डल-मण्डित-आननाम्
ear-rings decked face,
श्यामाम् नितम्ब-अर्पित-
the young girl, on the hips placed
रत्न-मेखलाम् व्यञ्जत्-स्तनीम्
jewelled girdle, full breasted,
कुन्तल-शङ्कित-ईक्षणाम्
by curls afraid eyed
She was like the Maayaa of the Lord, charming to the warriors, with slender waist, ear-rings decked face, the young full breasted girl had a jewelled girdle placed on her hips, with eyes as though afraid of her own curls.
शुचिस्मितां बिम्बफलाधरद्युतिशोणायमानद्विजकुन्दकुड्मलाम् ।
पदा चलन्तीं कलहंसगामिनीं शिञ्जत्कलानूपुरधामशोभिना ।
विलोक्य वीरा मुमुहु: समागता यशस्विनस्तत्कृतहृच्छयार्दिता: ॥५२॥
शुचि-स्मिताम् बिम्ब-फल-
with a bright smile, by the Bimba fruit like
अधर-द्युति शोणायमान-द्विज
lips (red) lustred reddened teeth
कुन्द-कुड्मलाम्
as jasmine buds,
पदा चलन्तीम् कल-हंस-
by feet walking, female swan
गामिनीम् शिञ्जत्-कला-नूपुर
like gait, jingling the strings of anklets
धाम-शोभिना
brilliance beautiful
विलोक्य वीरा: मुमुहु:
watching, the warriors enchanted
समागता: यशस्विन:-
the gathered, the famed
तत्-कृत हृच्छया-अर्दिता:
for her sake, by Cupid tormented
The famed warriors saw her beautiful smile, her lips red like the ripe Bimba fruits, the lustre of which reflected on the jasmine buds like white teeth, when she smiled. When she walked, her gait was like that of a female swan, her strings of anklets were beautiful and brilliant, and jingled as she walked, and the warriors were again and again infatuated, and tormented by Cupid for her sake.
यां वीक्ष्य ते नृपतयस्तदुदारहासव्रीडावलोकहृतचेतस उज्झितास्त्रा: ।
पेतु: क्षितौ गजरथाश्वगता विमूढा यात्राच्छलेन हरयेऽर्पयतीं स्वशोभाम् ॥५३॥
याम् वीक्ष्य ते नृपतय:-तत्-
whom looking at, those kings, her
उदार-हास-व्रीडा-अवलोक-
winsome smiles, coyness, glance,
हृत-चेतस:-उज्झित-अस्त्रा:
captivated minded, giving up the weapons
पेतु: क्षितौ गज-रथ-अश्व-गता:
fell on the ground, elephant chariot horses mounted on
विमूढा यात्रा-च्छलेन
stupefied, on the pretext
हरये-अर्पयतीम् स्व-शोभाम्
to The Lord offering her own beauty
Rukmini, who on the pretext of going to the temple, was all the while offering her own beauty to Shree Hari, on seeing her winsome smiles and coyness, the minds of those kings were captivated, and stupefied, they gave up their weapons and fell on the ground, as they were mounted on the elephants, chariots, and horses.
सैवं शनैश्चलयती चलपद्मकोशौ प्राप्तिं तदा भगवत: प्रसमीक्षमाणा ।
उत्सार्य वामकरजैरलकानपाङ्गै: प्राप्तान् ह्रियैक्षत नृपान् ददृशेऽच्युतं सा ॥५४॥
सा-एवम् शनै:-चलयती
she, thus, slowly walking
चल-पद्म-कोशौ प्राप्तिम् तदा
with mobile lotus buds (like feet), the arrival, then,
भगवत: प्रसमीक्षमाणा
of The Lord, awaiting,
उत्सार्य वाम-करजै:-
removing with the left hand fingers
अलकान्-अपाङ्गै:
the curls, with a side long glance,
प्राप्तान् ह्रिया-ऐक्षत
the arrived shyly, saw
नृपान् ददृशे-अच्युतम् सा
the kings, and spied The Immortal Lord she
Awaiting the arrival of The Lord, she walked slowly on her mobile lotus buds like feet. Removing the curls from her face with her left hand fingers, with a side long glance she saw the kings who had arrived, and spied The Immortal Lord Krishna.
तां राजकन्यां रथमारुरुक्षतीं जहार कृष्णो द्विषतां समीक्षताम् ।
रथं समारोप्य सुपर्णलक्षणं राजन्यचक्रं परिभूय माधव: ॥५५॥
ताम् राज-कन्याम्
her, the royal princess,
रथम्-आरुरुक्षतीम् जहार
on the chariot about to mount, snatched
कृष्ण: द्विषताम् समीक्षताम्
Krishna, the enemies, looking on,
रथम् समारोप्य सुपर्ण लक्षणम्
on the chariot seating, with Gaduda's emblem
राजन्य-चक्रम्
the kings' group
परिभूय माधव:
ignoring, Maadhava
As the royal princess was about to mount the chariot, Krishna, even as the enemies looked on, Maadhava, snatched her and seated her on the chariot with the emblem of Gaduda, ignoring the group of kings.
ततो ययौ रामपुरोगमै: शनै: ।
सृगालमध्यादिव भागहृद्-हरि: ॥५६॥
तत: ययौ
from there went
राम-पुरोगमै: शनै:
with Balaraama and others, slowly,
सृगाल-मध्यात्-
from the jackal's midst
इव भाग-हृत्-हरि:
like, the share carries off a lion, (Shree Hari)
From there then, with Balaraama and others, slowly, Shree Hari carried her away, like from the midst of the jackals, as a lion carries away his share.
तं मानिन: स्वाभिभवं यश:क्षयं परे जरासन्धवशा न सेहिरे ।
अहो धिगस्मान् यश आत्तधन्वनां गोपैर्हृतं केसरिणां मृगैरिव ॥५७॥
तम् मानिन: स्व-अभिभवम्
that, the arrogant, own defeat,
यश:-क्षयम् परे
reputation's loss, the others,
जरासन्ध-वशा: न सेहिरे
in Jaraasandha domination, did not appreciate
अहो धिक्-अस्मान्
'O fie to us
यश: आत्त-धन्वनाम्
the reputation of arms holding
गोपै:-हृतम्
by the cowherds snatched
केसरिणाम् मृगै:-इव
of the lions' by the dears like
Those arrogant kings under Jaraasandha domination, did not appreciate their own defeat and the loss of their reputation, and exclaimed, ' O fie on us, that though we were wielding our bows and arrows, the cowherds snatched away the share, as the dears' would of the lions'!
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे रुक्मिणीहरणं नाम त्रिपञ्चाशत्तमोऽध्याय: ॥५३॥
Thus ends the fifty-third discourse, entitled, 'The Lord carries away Rukmini', in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
