श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कामस्तु वासुदेवांशो दग्ध: प्राग् रुद्रमन्युना ।

देहोपपत्तये भूयस्तमेव प्रत्यपद्यत ॥१॥


काम:-तु वासुदेव-अंश:
Kaama, indeed, of Vaasudeva a part,
दग्ध: प्राक् रुद्र-मन्युना
burnt, previously by Rudra's wrath
देह-उपपत्तये भूय:-
for in a body to be born, again
तम्-एव प्रत्यपद्यत
Him only surrendered to

Kaama, indeed, who is a part of Vaasudeva, was previously burnt by the wrath of Rudra. Again, for need of being born with a body, surrendered to Him only.


स एव जातो वैदर्भ्यां कृष्णवीर्यसमुद्भव: ।

प्रद्युम्न इति विख्यात: सर्वतोऽनवम: पितु: ॥२॥


स: एव जात: वैदर्भ्याम्
he alone was born to Vaidarbhee,
कृष्ण-वीर्य-समुद्भव:
from Krishna's lions, sprung
प्रद्युम्न इति विख्यात:
Pradyumna, thus famous
सर्वत:-अनवम: पितु:
everywhere, in no way less to his father

He alone was born to Vaidarbhee, sprung from the lions of Krishna. All over well known as Pradyumna, he was in no way less to his father.


तं शम्बर: कामरूपी हृत्वा तोकमनिर्दशम् ।

स विदित्वाऽऽत्मन: शत्रुं प्रास्योदन्वत्यगाद् गृहम् ॥३॥


तम् शम्बर: काम-रूपी
him, Shambara, the at will form assuming,
हृत्वा तोकम्-अनि:-दशम्
taking away the child of ten days
स: विदित्वा-आत्मन: शत्रुम्
he, knowing own enemy,
प्रास्य-उदन्वति-अगाद् गृहम्
threw in the sea, went home

The demon Shambara, who could take a form at will, understanding him to be his own enemy, took the child of ten days of age, and threw him in the sea, and went home.


तं निर्जगार बलवान् मीन: सोऽप्यपरै: सह ।

वृतो जालेन महता गृहीतो मत्स्यजीविभि: ॥४॥


तम् निर्जगार बलवान् मीन:
him swallowed a mighty fish
स:-अपि-परै: सह
he also, others with
वृत: जालेन महता
surrounded, by a net huge
गृहीत: मत्स्य-जीविभि:
was taken by fisher-men

A mighty fish swallowed him, and he along with other fish was caught in a huge net and taken away by the fishermen.


तं शम्बराय कैवर्ता उपाजह्रुरुपायनम् ।

सूदा महानसं नीत्वावद्यन् स्वधितिनाद्भुतम् ॥५॥


तम् शम्बराय कैवर्ता:
him to Shambara, the fishermen
उपाजह्रु:-उपायनम्
took as gift
सूदा: महानसम् नीत्वा-
the cooks to the kitchen took
अवद्यन् स्वधितिना-अद्भुतम्
and cut with a knife the wonderful (fish)

The fishermen took it as a gift to Shambara. The cooks took it to the kitchen and cut the wonderful fish with a knife.


दृष्ट्वा तदुदरे बालं मायावत्यै न्यवेदयन् ।

नारदोऽकथयत् सर्वं तस्या: शङ्कितचेतस: ।

बालस्य तत्त्वमुत्पत्तिं मत्स्योदरनिवेशनम् ॥६॥


दृष्ट्वा तत्-उदरे बालम्
seeing in its stomach the child
मायावत्यै न्यवेदयन्
to Maayaavati gave
नारद-अकथयत् सर्वम्
Naarada told all
तस्या: शङ्कित-चेतस:
to her, the doubtful minded
बालस्य तत्त्वम्-उत्पत्तिम्
the child's reality, birth,
मत्स्य-उदर-निवेशनम्
and in the fish stomach placed

Discovering the child in the stomach of the fish, they handed it over to Maayaavati, the maid. Naarada explained to the doubtful minded maid the child's reality, birth and how it happened to be placed in the stomach of the fish.


सा च कामस्य वै पत्नी रतिर्नाम यशस्विनी ।

पत्युर्निर्दग्धदेहस्य देहोत्पत्तिं प्रतीक्षती ॥७॥


सा च कामस्य वै पत्नी
she and, (Maayaavati) Kaama's certainly the wife
रति:-नाम यशस्विनी
Rati by name, famed
पत्यु:-निर्दग्ध-देहस्य
husband's burnt body
देह-उत्पत्तिम् प्रतीक्षती
body reincarnation awaiting

The maid was no other than the famed wife of Kaama, Rati by name. She was awaiting the reincarnation of her husband whose body had burnt.


निरूपिता शम्बरेण सा सूपौदनसाधने ।

कामदेवं शिशुं बुद्ध्वा चक्रे स्नेहं तदार्भके ॥८॥


निरूपिता शम्बरेण सा
appointed by Shambara, she
सूप-ओदन-साधने
for pulses and rice cooking
कामदेवम् शिशुम् बुद्ध्वा
Kaama deva as the child knowing,
चक्रे स्नेहम् तत्-अर्भके
started loving that child

She was appointed by Shambara to cook pulses and rice. Knowing the child to be Kaama deva, she started loving the child.


नातिदीर्घेण कालेन स कार्ष्णी रूढयौवन: ।

जनयामास नारीणां वीक्षन्तीणां च विभ्रमम् ॥९॥


न-अति-दीर्घेण कालेन
(in) not very long time
स: कार्ष्णी रूढ-यौवन:
he, Krishna's son, advanced in youthfulness
जनयामास नारीणाम्
generated in the women,
वीक्षन्तीणाम् च विभ्रमम्
who looked (at him) and amorous feelings

Before long, the son of Krishna attained the young age, and generated amorous feelings in the minds of women who looked at him.


सा तं पतिं पद्मदलायतेक्षणं प्रलम्बबाहुं नरलोकसुन्दरम् ।

सव्रीडहासोत्तभितभ्रुवेक्षती प्रीत्योपतस्थे रतिरङ्ग सौरतै: ॥१०॥


सा तम् पतिम्
she, him, husband
पद्म-दल-आयत-ईक्षणम्
lotus petals like big eyed
प्रलम्ब-बाहुम् नर-लोक-सुन्दरम्
long arms, in the men's world charming
स-व्रीड-हास-उत्तभित-भ्रु-वेक्षती
with coy smiles, upraised brows glancing
प्रीत्या-उपतस्थे
lovingly, greeted
रति:-अङ्ग सौरतै:
Rati, O dear One! With amorous gestures

O dear One! she, Rati, him, her husband who had lotus petals like big eyes and long arms, and was the most charming among men, lovingly greeted with coy smiles, glanced with upraised brows, and amorous gestures.


तामाह भगवान् कार्ष्णिर्मातस्ते मतिरन्यथा ।

मातृभावमतिक्रम्य वर्तसे कामिनी यथा ॥११॥


ताम्-आह भगवान् कार्ष्णि:-
to her said, The Lord, Krishna's son,
मात:-ते मति:-अन्यथा
'Mother, your mind is different
मातृ-भावम्-अतिक्रम्य
motherly feeling overcoming
वर्तसे कामिनी यथा
behave like a paramour

The Lord Krishna's son said to her, 'Mother! I see that your mind is different, motherly affection overcoming, you behave like a paramour.'


रति:-उवाच -
Rati said -
भवान् नारायणसुत: शम्बरेणाहृतो गृहात् ।

अहं तेऽधिकृता पत्नी रति: कामो भवान् प्रभो ॥१२॥


भवान् नारायण-सुत:
you are Naaraayana's son
शम्बरेण-आहृत: गृहात्
by Shambara stolen from the labour chamber
अहम् ते-अधिकृता पत्नी
I am your appointed wife
रति: काम: भवान् प्रभो
Rati, Kaama are you, my lord

You are the son of Naaraayana, and were stolen by Shambara from the labour chamber. I am your wedded wife, Rati, and, my Lord, you are Kaama.


एष त्वानिर्दशं सिन्धावक्षिपच्छम्बरोऽसुर: ।

मत्स्योऽग्रसीत्तदुदरादिह प्राप्तो भवान् प्रभो ॥१३॥


एष: त्वा-अनिर्दशम् सिन्धौ-
this, you, of days ten, in the sea
अक्षिपत्-शम्बर:-असुर:
threw, Shambara the demon
मत्स्य:-अग्रसीत्-तत्-उदरात्-
a fish devoured, from its stomach
इह प्राप्त: भवान् प्रभो
here, have come you, my lord

This you, of ten days, were thrown in the sea by the demon Shambara, who was devoured by a fish, from whose stomach you have come here, my lord.


तमिमं जहि दुर्धर्षं दुर्जयं शत्रुमात्मन: ।

मायाशतविदं त्वं च मायाभिर्मोहनादिभि: ॥१४॥


तम्-इमम् जहि दुर्धर्षम्
him, this kill formidable
दुर्जयम् शत्रुम्-आत्मन:
unconquerable enemy of yours
माया-शत-विदम् त्वम् च
deluding tricks hundreds knower, you and
मायाभि:-मोहन-आदिभि:
by deluding tricks, stupefying and others

You kill him, by your deluding tricks like stupefying and others, this unconquerable and formidable enemy of yours, who knows hundreds of deluding tricks.


परिशोचति ते माता कुररीव गतप्रजा ।

पुत्रस्नेहाकुला दीना विवत्सा गौरिवातुरा ॥१५॥


परिशोचति ते माता
grieved your mother,
कुररी-इव गत-प्रजा
Kuraree (bird) like, having lost the child,
पुत्र-स्नेह-आकुला दीना
by parental affection overwhelmed, helpless,
विवत्सा गौ:-इव-आतुरा
deprived of the calf, cow like desperate

Your mother is in grief, like the Kuraree bird having lost her child. She is overwhelmed by parental affection, is helpless, and is desperate like a cow deprived of the calf.


प्रभाष्यैवं ददौ विद्यां प्रद्युम्नाय महात्मने ।

मायावती महामायां सर्वमायाविनाशिनीम् ॥१६॥


प्रभाष्य-एवम् ददौ विद्याम्
advising thus, gave the knowledge
प्रद्युम्नाय महात्मने
to Pradyumna, the high soul,
मायावती महा-मायाम्
Maayaavati, the Mahaa-Maayaa (a spell)
सर्व-माया विनाशिनीम्
of all the deluding tricks destroying

Thus advising, Maayaavati (or Rati), gave to the high soul Pradyumna, the knowledge of a spell named Mahaa-Maayaa, which destroys all the deluding tricks.


स च शम्बरमभ्येत्य संयुगाय समाह्वयत् ।

अविषह्यैस्तमाक्षेपै: क्षिपन् सञ्जनयन् कलिम् ॥१७॥


स: च शम्बरम्-अभ्येत्य
he and Shambara approached
संयुगाय सम-आह्वयत्
for combat challenged,
अविषह्यै:-तम्-आक्षेपै:
with unbearable him reproaches
क्षिपन् सञ्जनयन् कलिम्
showering, causing strife

And Pradyumna approached Shambara, and challenged him for a combat , showering him with strife causing unbearable reproaches.


सोऽधिक्षिप्तो दुर्वचोभि: पादाहत इवोरग: ।

निश्चक्राम गदापाणिरमर्षात्तम्रलोचन: ॥१८॥


स:-अधिक्षिप्त: दुर्वचोभि:
he sizzling by the abuses,
पाद-आहत इव-उरग:
foot trampled like serpent
निश्चक्राम गदा-पाणि:-
came out mace in hand
अमर्षात्-ताम्र-लोचन:
in indignation copper reddened eyes

He was sizzling because of the abuses and taunts, like a serpent trampled by foot. He came out mace in hand with his eyes reddened like copper with indignation.


गदामाविध्य तरसा प्रद्युम्नाय महात्मने ।

प्रक्षिप्य व्यनदन्नादं वज्रनिष्पेषनिष्ठुरम् ॥१९॥


गदाम्-आविध्य तरसा
the mace whirling in speed,
प्रद्युम्नाय महात्मने
on Pradyumna the high minded
प्रक्षिप्य व्यनदन्-नादम्
hurling, let out a roar,
वज्र-निष्पेष-निष्ठुरम्
thunder striking like harsh

He whirled the mace in great speed and hurled it on the high minded Pradyumna, and as he did so, he let out a harsh roar like the striking of thunder.


तामापतन्तीं भगवान् प्रद्युम्नो गदया गदाम् ।

अपास्य शत्रवे क्रुद्ध: प्राहिणोत् स्वगदां नृप ॥२०॥


ताम्-आपतन्तीम् भगवान्
that (mace) flying, the almighty
प्रद्युम्न: गदया गदाम्
Pradyumna, by mace the mace
अपास्य शत्रवे क्रुद्ध:
hit back, on the enemy enraged
प्राहिणोत् स्व-गदाम् नृप
struck his own mace, O King!

O King! The almighty Pradyumna with his mace hit back the mace which was flying towards him, and enraged, struck the enemy with his own mace.


स च मायां समाश्रित्य दैतेयीं मयदर्शिताम् ।

मुमुचेऽस्त्रमयं वर्षं कार्ष्णौ वैहायसोऽसुर: ॥२१॥


स: च मायाम् समाश्रित्य
he and the deluding power supported by,
दैतेयीम् मय-दर्शिताम्
demoniac, by Mayaasura taught
मुमुचे-अस्त्र-मयम् वर्षम्
charged weapon containing rain
कार्ष्णौ वैहायस:-असुर:
on Krishna's son, from the sky the demon

He then, resorted to and supported by the demoniac deluding power taught by Mayaasura, rained from the sky, volleys of missiles, on the son of Krishna.


बाध्यमानोऽस्त्रवर्षेण रौक्मिणेयो महारथ: ।

सत्त्वात्मिकां महाविद्यां सर्वमायोपमर्दिनीम् ॥२२॥


बाध्यमान:-अस्त्र-वर्षेण
bounded by the missiles shower
रौक्मिणेय: महारथ:
Rukmini's son the great charioteer
सत्त्व-आत्मिकाम् महा-विद्याम्
of Sattva comprising, the high knowledge
सर्व-माया-उपमर्दिनीम्
all illusive tricks trampling

Rukmini's son Pradyumna was being bound by the shower of missiles. He applied the pure, all Saatvic high knowledge which tramples all illusive tricks.


ततो गौह्यकगान्धर्वपैशाचोरगराक्षसी: ।

प्रायुङ्क्त शतशो दैत्य: कार्ष्णिर्व्यधमयत् स ता: ॥२३॥


तत: गौह्यक-गान्धर्व-
then, by the Guhyakas (Yakshas), Gandharvas,
पैशाच-उरग-राक्षसी:
Pishaachas, Naagas, Raakshasas
प्रायुङ्क्त शतश: दैत्य:
applied thousands (of devices) the demon,
कार्ष्णि:-व्यधम्-अयत् स: ता:
Krishna's son, destruction took to, He, them

Then, the demon employed thousands of devices practiced by the Guhyakas (Yakshas), Gandharvas, Pishaachas, Naagas and Raakshasas, all of which were destructed by Krishna's son.


निशातमसिमुद्यम्य सकिरीटं सकुण्डलम् ।

शम्बरस्य शिर: कायात् ताम्रश्मश्र्वोजसाहरत् ॥२४॥


निशातम्-असिम्-उद्यम्य
sharp sword catching hold of
सकिरीटम् सकुण्डलम्
with the diadem, with the ear-rings,
शम्बरस्य शिर: कायात्
Shambara head from the trunk
ताम्र-श्मश्रु-ओजसा-अहरत्
copper colored mostached, with valour severed

Catching hold of a sharp edged sword, with valour, He severed from the trunk, the copper colored moustached head of Shambara, along with the diadem and ear-rings.


आकीर्यमाणो दिविजै: स्तुवद्भि: कुसुमोत्करै: ।

भार्ययाम्बरचारिण्या पुरं नीतो विहायसा ॥२५॥


आकीर्यमाण: दिविजै:
showered, by the heavenly beings,
स्तुवद्भि: कुसुम-उत्करै:
and being praised with flowers' heaps
भार्यया-अम्बर-चारिण्या
by the wife, in the sky walker
पुरम् नीत: विहायसा
to the city (Dwaarakaa) was taken through the sky

He was showered with heaps of flowers and praised by the heavenly beings, and by the sky treader wife, was taken to the city of Dwaarakaa through the skyway.


अन्त:पुरवरं राजन् ललनाशतसङ्कुलम् ।

विवेश पत्न्या गगनाद् विद्युतेव बलाहक: ॥२६॥


अन्त:पुर-वरम् राजन्
in the inner chamber, the magnificent, O King!
ललना-शत-सङ्कुलम्
ladies hundreds crowded by
विवेश पत्न्या गगनात्
entered with the wife from the sky,
विद्युत-इव बलाहक:
lightening with like a cloud

O King! Pradyumna, from the sky, entered with his wife, the magnificent inner chamber crowded with hundreds of ladies, like a cloud with lightening.


तं दृष्ट्वा जलदश्यामं पीतकौशेयवाससम् ।

प्रलम्बबाहुं ताम्राक्षं सुस्मितं रुचिराननम् ॥२७॥


तम् दृष्ट्वा जलद-श्यामम्
Him seeing, cloud like dark
पीत-कौशेय-वाससम्
yellow silk clad in
प्रलम्ब-बाहुम् ताम्र-अक्षम्
with long arms, reddish eyes
सु-स्मितम् रुचिर-आननम्
beautiful smile, charming faced

Seeing Him, dark like a cloud, clad in yellow silk, with long arms, reddish eyes, beautiful smile and charming face,….


स्वलङ्कृतमुखाम्भोजं नीलवक्रालकालिभि: ।

कृष्णं मत्वा स्त्रियो ह्रीता निलिल्युस्तत्र तत्र ह ॥२८॥


सु-अलङ्कृत-मुख-अम्भोजम्
well decorated face lotus
नील-वक्र-अलक-अलिभि:
with dark blue curly locks, bees (like)
कृष्णम् मत्वा स्त्रिय: ह्रीता:
Krishna thinking, the ladies, bashfully
निलिल्यु:-तत्र तत्र ह
hid here and there, indeed

Like a lotus, with bees hovering, His lotus face was well decorated with dark blue curly hair. Thinking Him to be Krishna, indeed, the ladies bashfully hid themselves here and there.


अवधार्य शनैरीषद्वैलक्षण्येन योषित: ।

उपजग्मु: प्रमुदिता: सस्त्रीरत्नं सुविस्मिता: ॥२९॥


अवधार्य शनै:-ईषत्-
gathering slowly, by some
वैलक्षण्येन योषित:
differences, the ladies
उपजग्मु: प्रमुदिता:
approached delighted,
स-स्त्री-रत्नम् सुविस्मिता:
along with a women jewel, well amazed

The ladies gradually noticed some dissimilarities in him, and concluded that he was not Krishna. They then approached him with delight and were very amazed to see a jewel of a young woman with him.


अथ तत्रासितापाङ्गी वैदर्भी वल्गुभाषिणी ।

अस्मरत् स्वसुतं नष्टं स्नेहस्नुतपयोधरा ॥३०॥


अथ तत्र-असित-अपाङ्गी
then, there, the dark eyed
वैदर्भी वल्गु-भाषिणी
Vaidarbhee, sweet spoken
अस्मरत् स्व-सुतम् नष्टम्
remembered own son lost,
स्नेह-स्नुत-पयोधरा
with affection oozing breasts

Then, there, the dark eyed sweet spoken Vaidarbhee remembered her lost son, milk flowing from her breasts with affection.


को न्वयं नरवैदूर्य: कस्य वा कमलेक्षण: ।

धृत: कया वा जठरे केयं लब्धा त्वनेन वा ॥३१॥


क: नु-अयम् नर-वैदूर्य:
who indeed is this man jewel
कस्य वा कमल-ईक्षण:
whose or is the lotus eyed
धृत: कया वा जठरे
borne by whom was in the womb
का-इयम् लब्धा तु-अनेन वा
who is she obtained indeed by him or

Indeed, who this jewel of a man? Whose son is this lotus eyed one? Who is the mother by whom he was borne in the womb? Who is this lady, who is obtained by him?


मम चाप्यात्मजो नष्टो नीतो य: सूतिकागृहात् ।

एतत्तुल्यवयोरूपो यदि जीवति कुत्रचित् ॥३२॥


मम च-अपि-आत्मज: नष्ट:
my and also son lost,
नीत: य: सूतिका-गृहात्
was taken who from labour chamber
एतत्-तुल्य-वय:-रूप:
this (him) like age and looks (would be)
यदि जीवति कुत्रचित्
if is living somewhere

And my son also, who was taken away from the labour chamber, was lost. If he is living somewhere, he would be of the same age and of the same looks.


कथं त्वनेन संप्राप्तं सारूप्यं शार्ङ्गधन्वन: ।

आकृत्यावयवैर्गत्या स्वरहासावलोकनै: ॥३३॥


कथम् तु-अनेन संप्राप्तम्
how indeed, by him is acquired
सारूप्यम् शार्ङ्गधन्वन:
the same form of The Lord with the Shaaranga bow
आकृत्या-अवयवै:-गत्या
in features, limbs, gait,
स्वर-हास-अवलोकनै:
voice, laughter, (and) glances

How indeed, has this person has acquired the same form of The Lord with the Shaaranga bow? The similarity is seen in the features, limbs, gait, voice, laughter and the glances.


स एव वा भवेन्नूनं यो मे गर्भे धृतोऽर्भक: ।

अमुष्मिन् प्रीतिरधिका वाम: स्फुरति मे भुज: ॥३४॥


स: एव वा भवेत्-नूनम्
he only or may be certainly,
य: मे गर्भे धृत:-अर्भक:
who in my womb was borne, the boy
अमुष्मिन् प्रीति:-अधिका
in him affection very much
वाम: स्फुरति मे भुज:
left twitches my arm

Or, certainly, he may be same boy who was borne by me in my womb, as I have great affection for him, and my left arm is also twitching.


एवं मीमांसमानायां वैदर्भ्यां देवकीसुत: ।

देवक्यानकदुन्दुभ्यामुत्तमश्लोक आगमत् ॥३५॥


एवम् मीमांसमानायाम्
thus conjecturing
वैदर्भ्याम् देवकी-सुत:
was Vaidarbhee, (when) Devaki's son,
देवकी-अनकदुन्दुभ्याम्-
with Devaki and Aanakadundubhi
उत्तमश्लोक आगमत्
highly sung of, came

As Vaidarbhee was thus conjecturing, Devaki's son Krishna, The highly sung of, came there with Devaki and Aanakadundubhi, (Vasudeva).


विज्ञातर्थोऽपि भगवांस्तूष्णीमास जनार्दन: ।

नारदोऽकथयत् सर्वं शम्बराहरणादिकम् ॥३६॥


विज्ञात-अर्थ:-अपि भगवान्-
knowing the truth though, The Lord
तूष्णीम्-आस जनार्दन:
quiet remained, The saviour of men
नारद:-अकथयत् सर्वम्
Naarada said everything
शम्बर-आहरण-आदिकम्
by Shambara stolen and so on

Though The Lord, The Saviour of men, knew the truth, he remained quiet. Naarada related everything, the stealing of the child by Shambara, and so on.


तच्छ्रुत्वा महदाश्चर्यं कृष्णान्त:पुरयोषित: ।

अभ्यनन्दन् बहूनब्दान् नष्टं मृतमिवागतम् ॥३७॥


तत्-श्रुत्वा महत्-आश्चर्यम्
that hearing, the great miracle
कृष्ण-अन्त:पुर-योषित:
of Krishna's inner chamber women
अभ्यनन्दन् बहून्-अब्दान् नष्टम्
greeted (him) for many years lost
मृतम्-इव-आगतम्
dead like having come back

Hearing of the great miracle, the women of the inner chamber of Krishna, welcomed him, the lost for many years, like a dead having come back.


देवकी वसुदेवश्च कृष्णरामौ तथा स्त्रिय: ।

दम्पती तौ परिष्वज्य रुक्मिणी च ययुर्मुदम् ॥३८॥


देवकी वसुदेव:-च
Devaki, Vasudeva and
कृष्ण-रामौ तथा स्त्रिय:
Krishna and Balaraama, and the women,
दम्पती तौ परिष्वज्य
the couple them embraced
रुक्मिणी च ययु:-मुदम्
Rukmini and became overjoyed

Devaki, Vasudeva and Krishna and Balaraama, Rukmini and the women, embraced them, the couple and became overjoyed.


नष्टं प्रद्युम्नमायातमाकर्ण्य द्वारकौकस: ।

अहो मृत इवायातो बालो दिष्ट्येति हाब्रुवन् ॥३९॥


नष्टम् प्रद्युम्नम्-आयातम्-
the lost Pradyumna
आकर्ण्य द्वारका-औकस:
hearing, the Dwaarakaa residents
अहो मृत इव-आयात: बाल:
'O dead like has come back, the boy,
दिष्ट्या-इति ह-अब्रुवन्
by good luck,' thus indeed said

The citizens of Dwaarakaa, heard that the lost Pradyumna had returned. They exclaimed, 'O by good luck the boy certainly, has come back as though from dead.'


यं वै मुहु: पितृसरूपनिजेशभावास्तन्मातरो यदभजन् रहरूढभावा: ।

चित्रं न तत् खलु रमास्पदबिम्बबिम्बे कामे स्मरेऽक्षिविषये किमुतान्यनार्य: ॥४०॥


यम् वै मुहु: पितृ-सरूप-
whom indeed, again and again, father like (form having)
निज-ईश-भावा: तत्-मातर:
own Master mistaking, his mothers
यत्-अभजन् रह:-रूड-भावा:
whom, sought seclusion, with increased passion
चित्रम् न तत् खलु
surprising not that indeed
रमा-आस्पद-बिम्ब-बिम्बे
of Ramaa's abode, reflection in the reflected form
कामे स्मरे-अक्षि-विषये
of The God of Love, of the eyes the subject
किम्-उत-अन्य-नार्य:
what then of other women

Pradyumna, who had the identical form of his father, and when he became the subject of the eyes, even his mothers would mistake him to be their own Master, Krishna, Who is the abode of the Goddess of Beauty, Ramaa, reflection in the reflected form, and would seek seclusion for the upsurge of passion, what then of other women?


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंसायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे प्रद्युम्नोत्पत्तिनिरूपणं नाम पञ्चपञ्चाशत्तम: अध्याय: ॥५५॥


Thus ends the fifty-fifth discourse entitled 'The story of Pradyumna birth,' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
