श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
सत्राजित: स्वतनयां कृष्णाय कृतकिल्बिष: ।
स्यमन्तकेन मणिना स्वयमुद्यम्य दत्तवान् ॥१॥
सत्राजित: स्व-तनयाम्
Satraajit, his own daughter
कृष्णाय कृत-किल्बिष:
to Krishna, having done wrong,
स्यमन्तकेन मणिना
with Syamantaka gem
स्वयम्-उद्यम्य दत्तवान्
himself, making an effort, gave
Satraajit, who had erred towards Krishna, himself made an effort and gave his own daughter, Satyabhaamaa, along with the Syamantaka gem to Krishna.
राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
सत्राजित: किमकरोद् ब्रह्मन् कृष्णस्य किल्बिषम् ।
स्यमन्तक: कुतस्तस्य कस्माद् दत्ता सुता हरे: ॥२॥
सत्राजित: किम्-अकरोत्
Satraajit what did
ब्रह्मन् कृष्णस्य किल्बिषम्
O Holy sage! towards Krishna wrong
स्यमन्तक: कुत:-तस्य
Syamantaka, from where his,
कस्माद् दत्ता सुता हरे:
why gave daughter to Shree Hari
O Holy sage! what wrong did Satraajit do towards Krishna? From where did he get the Syamantaka gem and why did he give his daughter and the gem to Shree Hari?
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
आसीत् सत्राजित: सूर्यो भक्तस्य परम: सखा ।
प्रीतस्तस्मै मणिं प्रादात् सूर्यस्तुष्ट: स्यमन्तकम् ॥३॥
आसीत् सत्राजित: सूर्य:
was Satraajit's the Sun
भक्तस्य परम: सखा
devotee's good friend
प्रीत:-तस्मै मणिम् प्रादात्
pleased with him, the gem gave
सूर्य:-तुष्ट: स्यमन्तकम्
The Sun satisfied, Syamantaka
Satraajit, The Sun's devotee, was also his good friend. Pleased and satisfied with him, The Sun gave him the Syamantaka gem.
स तं बिभ्रन् मणिं कण्ठे भ्राजमानो यथा रवि: ।
प्रविष्टो द्वारकां राजंस्तेजसा नोपलक्षित: ॥४॥
स: तम् बिभ्रन् मणिम् कण्ठे
he, that adorning, the gem in the neck
भ्राजमान: यथा रवि:
shining like The Sun,
प्रविष्ट: द्वारकाम् राजन्
entered Dwaarakaa, O King!
तेजसा न-उपलक्षित:
by the shining brilliance, was not seen
O King! He wore that gem around his neck, and started shining like The Sun. He then, entered Dwaarakaa, but, by its shining brilliance, he, Satraajit was not seen.
तं विलोक्य जना दूरात्तेजसा मुष्टदृष्टय: ।
दिव्यतेऽक्षैर्भगवते शशंसु: सूर्यशङ्किता: ॥५॥
तम् विलोक्य जना: दूरात्-
him seeing, the people from afar,
तेजसा मुष्ट-दृष्टय:
by glare dazzled eyed
दिव्यते-अक्षै:-भगवते
playing with dice, to The Lord
शशंसु: सूर्य-शङ्किता:
reported, Sun doubting him to be
The people saw him from far, and their eyes were dazzled by his glare. They mistook him to be The Sun, and reported to The Lord, Who was playing dice.
नारायण नमस्तेऽस्तु शङ्खचक्रगदाधर ।
दामोदरारविन्दाक्ष गोविन्द यदुनन्दन ॥६॥
नारायण नमस्ते-अस्तु
O Naaraayana! Salutations be to You
शङ्ख-चक्र-गदा-धर
conch, discus, mace wielding,
दामोदर-अरविन्द-अक्ष
cord around the waist, lotus eyed,
गोविन्द यदुनन्दन
The Protector of cows! Of the Yadus' delight
O Naaraayana! O Wielder of conch, discus, mace, having a cord around the waist, O Lotus-eyed One! O Protector of cows, and O Delight of the Yadus!
एष आयाति सविता त्वां दिदृक्षुर्जगत्पते ।
मुष्णन् गभस्तिचक्रेण नृणां चक्षूंषि तिग्मगु: ॥७॥
एष: आयाति सविता
this comes The Sun,
त्वाम् दिदृक्षु:-जगत्पते
You to meet, O Lord of the universe!
मुष्णन् गभस्ति-चक्रेण
dazzling by the rays' circle
नृणाम् चक्षूंषि तिग्मगु:
of the men the eyes, he of brilliant rays
O Lord of the universe! Here comes The Sun, to meet You. He, having brilliant rays, dazzles the eyes of the men with the circle of the rays.
नन्वन्विच्छन्ति ते मार्गं त्रिलोक्यां विबुधर्षभा: ।
ज्ञात्वाद्य गूढं यदुषु द्रष्टुं त्वां यात्यज: प्रभो ॥८॥
ननु-अन्विच्छन्ति ते मार्गम्
certainly, looking Your way
त्रिलोक्याम् विबुध-ऋषभा:
in the three worlds, the foremost of the gods,
ज्ञात्वा-अद्य गूढम् यदुषु
knowing now (today), hiding among the Yadus,
द्रष्टुं त्वाम् याति-अज: प्रभो
to see You, comes, the unborn (Sun), O Lord!
O Lord! The foremost of the gods, Brahmaa and others keep looking for ways to meet You. Now coming to know of Your living incognito with the Yadus, the unborn Sun comes to meet You.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
निशम्य बालवचनं प्रहस्याम्बुजलोचन: ।
प्राह नासौ रविर्देव: सत्राजिन्मणिना ज्वलन् ॥९॥
निशम्य बाल-वचनम्
hearing the ignorant words,
प्रहस्य-अम्बुज-लोचन:
laughingly, The Lotus-eyed (Lord)
प्राह न-असौ रवि:-देव:
said, 'Not this (is) The Sun god,
सत्राजित्-मणिना ज्वलन्
Satraajit by the gem shines
The Lotus-eyed Lord, hearing the words of the people who did not know the truth, laughingly said, ' This is not the Sun god, this is Satraajit shining because of the gem.'
सत्राजित् स्वगृहं श्रीमत् कृतकौतुकमङ्गलम् ।
प्रविश्य देवसदने मणिं विप्रैर्न्यवेशयत् ॥१०॥
सत्राजित् स्व-गृहम् श्रीमत्
Satraajit, to his own house, splendid,
कृत-कौतुक-मङ्गलम्
which was made to be decorated for festival
प्रविश्य देव-सदने
entering, in God's chamber
मणिम् विप्रै:-न्यवेशयत्
the gem by the Braahmanas got installed
Satraajit entered his own splendid house, which was decorated for festival, and got the gem to be installed in the chamber of God, by the Braahmanas.
दिने दिने स्वर्णभारानष्टौ स सृजति प्रभो ।
दुर्भिक्षमार्यरिष्टानि सर्पाधिव्याधयोऽशुभा: ।
न सन्ति मायिनस्तत्र यत्रास्तेऽभ्यर्चितो मणि: ॥११॥
दिने दिने स्वर्ण-भारान्-
every day, gold, bhaaras, ( weight measurement)
अष्टौ स: सृजति प्रभो
eight, that yielded, O lord!
दुर्भिक्ष-मारी-अरिष्टानि
famine, pestilence, calamities,
सर्प-आधि-व्याधयो:-अशुभा:
snake, mental worries, physical ailments, evils,
न सन्ति मायिन:-तत्र
not were, rogues, there,
यत्र-आस्ते-अभ्यर्चित: मणि:
where was placed and worshipped the gem
O lord Pareekshit! Where the gem was placed and was worshipped, there, it yielded eight Bhaaras of gold every day. No famine, pestilence, calamities, fear of snake, mental worries, physical ailments, evils, and rogues existed there.
स याचितो मणिं क्वापि यदुराजाय शौरिणा ।
नैवार्थकामुक: प्रादाद् याच्ञाभङ्गमतर्कयन् ॥१२॥
स: याचित: मणिम् क्व-अपि
he, requested the gem, once also
यदु-राजाय शौरिणा
for the Yadus' king (Ugrasena) by Krishna
न-एव-अर्थ-कामुक: प्रादाद्
not even, of wealth greedy, gave
याच्ञा-भङ्गम्-अतर्कयन्
request rejection not considering
Once, he was requested by Krishna for the gem for the king of Yadus, Ugrasena. But he, Satraajit, greedy of wealth did not give it, not even considering the rejection of the request.
तमेकदा मणिं कण्ठे प्रतिमुच्य महाप्रभम् ।
प्रसेनो हयमारुह्य मृगयां व्यचरद् वने ॥१३॥
तम्-एकदा मणिम् कण्ठे
it, one day, the gem, in the neck
प्रतिमुच्य महा-प्रभम्
wearing, of great brilliance
प्रसेन: हयम्-आरुह्य
Prasena, on the horse mounting
मृगयाम् व्यचरत् वने
for hunting went to the forest
Then, one day, wearing the gem in the neck, Prasena, Satraajit's brother, mounting the horse, went to the forest for hunting.
प्रसेनं सहयं हत्वा मणिमाच्छिद्य केसरी ।
गिरिं विशञ्जाम्बवता निहतो मणिमिच्छता ॥१४॥
प्रसेनम् सहयम् हत्वा
Prasena, along with the horse killing,
मणिम्-आच्छिद्य केसरी
the gem taking away, the lion,
गिरिम् विशन्-जाम्बवता
(as he) the mountain cave entered, by Jaambavaana
निहत: मणिम्-इच्छता
was killed, the gem desiring for
A lion killed Prasena along with the horse, and taking away the gem, was entering the cave of a mountain, when, Jaambavaana killed him, desiring to have the gem.
सोऽपि चक्रे कुमारस्य मणिं क्रीडनकं बिले ।
अपश्यन् भ्रातरं भ्राता सत्राजित् पर्यतप्यत ॥१५॥
स:-अपि चक्रे कुमारस्य
he also made for the child,
मणिम् क्रीडनकम् बिले
the gem, a play-thing, in the cave
अपश्यन् भ्रातरम्
not seeing the brother,
भ्राता सत्राजित् पर्यतप्यत
brother Satraajit was very sad
He, Jaambavaana gave the gem as a plaything to the child in the cave. Not seeing his brother, Prasena, His brother Satraajit was very sad.
प्राय: कृष्णेन निहतो मणिग्रीवो वनं गत: ।
भ्राता ममेति तच्छ्रुत्वा कर्णे कर्णेऽजपञ्जना: ॥१६॥
प्राय: कृष्णेन निहत:
Certainly, by Krishna was killed
मणि-ग्रीव: वनम् गत:
gem in neck, to the forest gone
भ्राता मम-इति तत्-श्रुत्वा
brother mine, this, that hearing
कर्णे कर्णे-अजपत्-जना:
ear to ear spoke people
'My brother had gone to the forest, wearing the gem in his neck. Surely Krishna has killed him.' Hearing this, the people spoke from ear to ear and spread the rumour.
भगवांस्तदुपश्रुत्य दुर्यशो लिप्तमात्मनि ।
मार्ष्टुं प्रसेनपदवीमन्वपद्यत नागरै: ॥१७॥
भगवान्-तत्-उपश्रुत्य
The Lord, that having heard,
दुर्यश: लिप्तम्-आत्मनि
the bad name cast on Him
मार्ष्टुम् प्रसेन पदवीम्-
to wipe, Prasena's whereabouts,
अन्वपद्यत नागरै:
tracing, with the citizens
The Lord Krishna, having heard the bad name cast on Himself, went with some citizens tracing the whereabouts of Prasena.
हतं प्रसेनमश्वं च वीक्ष्य केसरिणा वने ।
तं चाद्रिपृष्ठे निहतमृक्षेण ददृशुर्जना: ॥१८॥
हतम् प्रसेनम्-अश्वम् च
killed Prasena, horse and,
वीक्ष्य केसरिणा वने
seeing, by a lion, in the forest,
तम् च-अद्रि-पृष्ठे निहतम्-
him and on the mountain side, killed
ऋक्षेण ददृशु:-जना:
by a bear, saw the people
The people saw Prasena and the horse killed by a lion in the forest, and the lion killed by a bear lying on the side of the mountain.
ऋक्षराजबिलं भीममन्धेन तमसाऽऽवृतम् ।
एको विवेश भगवानवस्थाप्य बहि: प्रजा: ॥१९॥
ऋक्षराज-बिलम् भीमम्-
of bears' leader, the cave, with dense
अन्धेन तमसा-आवृतम्
blinding darkness covered,
एक: विवेश भगवान्-
alone entered The Lord,
अवस्थाप्य बहि: प्रजा:
placing outside the people
The cave of the lord of the bears, was covered with dense blinding darkness. The Lord Krishna entered into it alone, keeping the people outside.
तत्र दृष्ट्वा मणिश्रेष्ठं बालक्रीडनकं कृतम् ।
हर्तुं कृतमतिस्तस्मिन्नवतस्थेऽर्भकान्तिके ॥२०॥
तत्र दृष्ट्वा मणि-श्रेष्ठम्
there, seeing the gem excellent
बाल-क्रीडनकम् कृतम्
a child's play thing converted to
हर्तुम् कृत-मति:-तस्मिन्-
to take away making up mind, there,
अवतस्थे-अर्भक-अन्तिके
waited to the child near by
The Lord saw the excellent gem there, converted into a child's play-thing. He made up His mind to take it away, and waited there, near the child.
तमपूर्वं नरं दृष्ट्वा धात्री चुक्रोश भीतवत् ।
तच्छ्रुत्वाभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्धो जाम्बवान् बलिनां वर: ॥२१॥
तम्-अपूर्वम् नरम् दृष्ट्वा
Him, the wonderful man seeing,
धात्री चुक्रोश भीतवत्
the nurse screamed in fear like,
तत्-श्रुत्वा-अभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्ध:
that hearing rushed enraged
जाम्बवान् बलिनाम् वर:
Jaambavaana, of the mighty the foremost
On seeing the wonderful man, the nurse screamed, as if in fear. Hearing the scream, the enraged Jaambavaana, the foremost of the mighty rushed to the spot.
स वै भगवता तेन युयुधे स्वामिनाऽऽत्मन: ।
पुरुषं प्राकृतं मत्वा कुपितो नानुभाववित् ॥२२॥
स: वै भगवता तेन
he indeed, with The Lord, with Him,
युयुधे स्वामिना-आत्मन:
fought, with The Master, (his) own
पुरुषम् प्राकृतम् मत्वा
a person mortal believing,
कुपित: न-अनुभाव-वित्
enraged, not greatness understanding
He, the enraged Jaambavaana fought with his own Master, believing Him to be a mortal person, and not being aware of His greatness.
द्वन्द्वयुद्धं सुतुमुलमुभयोर्विजिगीषतो: ।
आयुधाश्मद्रुमैर्दोर्भि: क्रव्यार्थे स्येनयोरिव ॥२३॥
द्वन्द्व-युद्धम् सुतुमुलम्-
a duel combat tumultuous
उभयो:-विजिगीषतो:
of the two, eager to win
आयुध-अश्म-द्रुमै:-दोर्भि:
with weapons, stones, trees and arms
क्रव्य-अर्थे स्येनयो:-इव
flesh for, two hawks like
A tumultuous duel combat started between the two, both keen to win. They fought with weapons, stones, trees and arms, like two hawks fighting for a piece of flesh.
आसीत्तदष्टाविंशाहमितरेतरमुष्टिभि: ।
वज्रनिष्पेषपरुषैरविश्रममहर्निशम् ॥२४॥
आसीत्-तत्-अष्टाविंश-
happened that, for twenty eight
अहम्-इतर-इतर-मुष्टिभि:
days, one other's fists by
वज्र-निष्पेष-परुषै:-
thunder bolt strikes severe
अविश्रमम्-अह:-निशम्
without a pause, day and night
That combat went on for twenty eight days, with thunder bolts like severe hits, they struck each other with fists, and continued to do so day and night without a pause.
कृष्णमुष्टिविनिष्पातनिष्पिष्टाङ्गोरुबन्धन: ।
क्षीणसत्त्व: स्विन्नगात्रस्तमाहातीव विस्मित: ॥२५॥
कृष्ण-मुष्टि-विनिष्पात-
by Krishna's fist strokes
निष्पिष्ट-अङ्ग-उरु-बन्धन:
crushed limbs, muscles and joints
क्षीण-सत्त्व: स्विन्न-गात्र:-
depleted of strength, perspiring in body,
तम्-आह-अतीव विस्मित:
Him said, very astonished
Jaambawaan's limbs, muscles and joints were crushed by the strikes of Krishna's fist, his strength was depleted, and his body was full of perspiration. Very much astonished, he said to Him, Krishna,…
जाने त्वां सर्वभूतानां प्राण ओज: सहो बलम् ।
विष्णुं पुराणपुरुषं प्रभविष्णुमधीश्वरम् ॥२६॥
जाने त्वाम् सर्व-भूतानाम्
(now) I know You, of all beings
प्राण ओज: सह: बलम्
The life energy, organic mental and physical power
विष्णुम् पुराण-पुरुषम्
Vishnu, The Ancient Person,
प्रभविष्णुम्-अधीश्वरम्
The All-powerful Vishnu, The suzerain Lord
Now I know You to be The life energy, organic power, mental and physical strength of all beings, Vishnu, The Ancient Person, The All-powerful Vishnu, The suzerain Lord.
त्वं हि विश्वसृजां स्रष्टा सृज्यानामपि यच्च सत् ।
काल: कलयतामीश: पर आत्मा तथाऽऽत्मनाम् ॥२७॥
त्वम् हि विश्व-सृजाम् स्रष्टा
You alone, of the universe's creators, The Creator,
सृज्यानाम्-अपि यत्-च सत्
of the created substances also, that and The Reality
काल: कलयताम्-ईश:
Time of those who control destruction, The Lord,
पर आत्मा तथा-आत्मनाम्
The Supreme Soul and of the embodied souls
You alone are The Creator of the creators of the universe, Brahmaa and others. You are the underlying Reality of those that are created. You are The Lord and Time Spirit of those who control and destroy others, and You are The Supreme Soul of the embodied souls.
यस्येषदुत्कलितरोषकटाक्षमोक्षैर्वर्त्मादिशत् क्षुभितनक्रतिमिङ्गिलोऽब्धि: ।
सेतु: कृत: स्वयश उज्ज्वलिता च लङ्का रक्ष:शिरांसि भुवि पेतुरिषुक्षतानि ॥२८॥
यस्य-इषत्-उत्कलित-
Whose slightly enkindled
रोष-कटाक्ष-मोक्षै:-वर्त्मा-आदिशत्
wrath sidelong glance cast, way gave
क्षुभित-नक्र-तिमिङ्गिल:-अब्धि:
agitated with crocodiles whales, the ocean
सेतु: कृत: स्व-यश उज्ज्वलिता
bridge constructed of Own glory put to blaze
च लङ्का रक्ष:शिरांसि
and Lankaa Raakshasha's' heads
भुवि पेतु:-इषु-क्षतानि
on the earth fell, by arrows cut off
By Whose slightly wrath enkindled sidelong glances when cast, the ocean, agitated with crocodiles and whales, gave Him the way. Who constructed the bridge, the embodiment of His Own glory. Who made Lankaa to be put to blazes, and Whose arrows cut off the heads of the Raakshasha which fell on the ground.
इति विज्ञातविज्ञानमृक्षराजानमच्युत ।
व्याजहार महाराज भगवान् देवकीसुत: ॥२९॥
इति विज्ञात-विज्ञानम्-
thus, to the knower of The Eternal Truth,
ऋक्ष-राजानम्-अच्युत
to the bear king, The Immortal (Krishna)
व्याजहार महाराज
said, O Great king!
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son
O Great king! The Lord, Devaki's son, The Immortal (Krishna) said thus, to the bear king, who was the knower of the Eternal Truth.
अभिमृश्यारविन्दाक्ष: पाणिना शङ्करेण तम् ।
कृपया परया भक्तं प्रेमगम्भीरया गिरा ॥३०॥
अभिमृश्य-अरविन्द-अक्ष:
patting, The Lotus-eyed
पाणिना शङ्करेण तम्
with hand, benefactory, him
कृपया परया भक्तम्
with compassion supreme the devotee
प्रेम-गम्भीरया गिरा
with emotions deepened voice
The lotus-eyed Lord with supreme compassion, patted him, His devotee, with His benedictory hand, and said to him in a voice deep with emotions….
मणिहेतोरिह प्राप्ता वयमृक्षपते बिलम् ।
मिथ्याभिशापं प्रमृजन्नात्मनो मणिनामुना ॥३१॥
मणि-हेतो:-इह प्राप्ता:
for the gem's sake, here have come
वयम्-ऋक्षपते बिलम्
we, O Chief of the Bears! To the cave
मिथ्या-अभिशापम् प्रमृजन्-
false allegation to wipe
आत्मन: मणिना-अमुना
on Myself by the gem this
O Chief of the Bears! We have come here, to your cave, for the sake of the gem. And to wipe off the false allegation on Myself because of this gem.
इत्युक्तं स्वां दुहितरं कन्यां जाम्बवतीं मुदा ।
अर्हणार्थं स मणिना कृष्णायोपजहार ह ॥३२॥
इति-उक्तम् स्वाम् दुहितरम्
thus told, own daughter young
कन्याम् जाम्बवतीम् मुदा
girl, Jaambavatee's, with delight
अर्हण-अर्थम् स: मणिना
to propitiate purpose, he, with the gem
कृष्णाय-उपजहार ह
to Krishna gave indeed
Thus told, Jaambavaana, to propitiate Lord Krishna, indeed, with delight gave his own young daughter Jaambavatee's and the gem to Him.
अदृष्ट्वा निर्गमं शौरे: प्रविष्टस्य बिलं जना: ।
प्रतीक्ष्य द्वादशाहानि दु:खिता: स्वपुरं ययु: ॥३३॥
अदृष्ट्वा निर्गमम् शौरे:
not seeing coming out of Krishna,
प्रविष्टस्य बिलम् जना:
Who had entered the cave, the people
प्रतीक्ष्य द्वादश-अहानि
waited for twelve days
दु:खिता: स्व-पुरम् ययु:
saddened, to own city went
The people waited for twelve days, and not finding Krishna coming out of the cave, which He had entered, they were saddened and went back to their city.
निशम्य देवकी देवी रुक्मिण्यानकदुन्दुभि: ।
सुहृदो ज्ञातयोऽशोचन् बिलात् कृष्णमनिर्गतम् ॥३४॥
निशम्य देवकी देवी
hearing, Devaki,
रुक्मिणी-अनकदुन्दुभि:
the divine Rukmini, Vasudeva,
सुहृद: ज्ञातय:-अशोचन्
relations kinsmen grieved,
बिलात् कृष्णम्-अनिर्गतम्
from the cave Krishna having not come out
Hearing that Krishna had not come out of the cave, Devaki, the divine Rukmini, Vasudeva, the relations and kinsmen grieved.
सत्राजितं शपन्तस्ते दु:खिता द्वारकौकस: ।
उपतस्थुर्महामायां दुर्गां कृष्णोपलब्धये ॥३५॥
सत्राजितम् शपन्त:-ते
Satraajit cursing, they,
दु:खिता द्वारका-ओकस:
saddened, the Dwaarakaa citizens
उपतस्थु:-महा-मायाम्
prayed to The Supreme Energy
दुर्गाम् कृष्ण-उपलब्धये
Durga, (The Goddess) Krishna for finding
The residents of Dwaarakaa were saddened and cursed Satraajit. They, then prayed to The Goddess Durga, The Supreme Energy, of The Lord, for finding and for the return of Krishna.
तेषां तु देव्युपस्थानात् प्रत्यादिष्टाशिषा स च ।
प्रादुर्बभूव सिद्धार्थ: सदारो हर्षयन् हरि: ॥३६॥
तेषाम् तु देवी-उपस्थानात्
their, certainly, by The Goddess's worship
प्रत्यादिष्ट-आशिषा स: च
and conferring of benedictions, He and
प्रादुर्बभूव सिद्ध-अर्थ:
appeared, having accomplished the purpose,
स-दार: हर्षयन् हरि:
with wife, delighting, Shree Hari
By the worship of The Goddess, and by the benedictions conferred by Her, He, Shree Hari appeared with His wife Jaambavati's, having accomplished His purpose of recovering of the gem.
उपलभ्य हृषीकेशं मृतं पुनरिवागतम् ।
सह पत्न्या मणिग्रीवं सर्वे जातमहोत्सवा: ॥३७॥
उपलभ्य हृषीकेशम्
getting back Krishna,
मृतम् पुन:-इव-आगतम्
dead, again like come back
सह पत्न्या मणि-ग्रीवम्
with wife, gem in the neck,
सर्वे जात-महोत्सवा:
all were full of great joy (festivity)
Getting back, Krishna, as if come back from death, with His wife and with the gem in His neck, they were all full of great joy.
सत्राजितं समाहूय सभायां राजसन्निधौ ।
प्राप्तिं चाख्याय भगवान् मणिं तस्मै न्यवेदयत् ॥३८॥
सत्राजितम् समाहूय
Satraajit summoned
सभायाम् राज-सन्निधौ
in the court, in the king's presence
प्राप्तिम् च-आख्याय भगवान्
the recovery and relating The Lord
मणिम् तस्मै न्यवेदयत्
the gem to him gave back
Satraajit was summoned to the court, in the presence of the king. Lord Krishna related the recovery of the gem, and returned it to him.
स चातिव्रीडितो रत्नं गृहीत्वावाङ्मुखस्तत: ।
अनुतप्यमानो भवनमगमत् स्वेन पाप्मना ॥३९॥
स: च-अति-व्रीडित: रत्नम्
he and very ashamed, the gem
गृहीत्वा-अवाङ्-मुख:-तत:
taking with hanging head, from there
अनुतप्यमान: भवनम्-
repenting, to home
अगमत् स्वेन पाप्मना
returned, for his own sin
He was very much ashamed and with his head lowered, he took the gem and returned to his home, repenting for his own sin.
सोऽनुध्यायंस्तदेवाघं बलवद्विग्रहाकुल: ।
कथं मृजाम्यात्मरज: प्रसीदेद् वाच्युत: कथम् ॥४०॥
स:-अनुध्यायन्-तत्-एव-अघम्
he, pondering over that only sin
बलवत्-विग्रह-आकुल:
with the mighty discord nervous of
कथम् मृजामि-आत्म-रज:
how will wipe out my guilt
प्रसीदेत् वा-अच्युत: कथम्
will be pleased or Krishna how
He kept pondering over his that sinful act, and was nervous for having created discord with the mighty, and thought, 'How will I wipe out my own guilt and how will The Imperishable Lord Krishna be pleased.'
किं कृत्वा साधु मह्यं स्यान्न शपेद् वा जनो यथा ।
अदीर्घदर्शनं क्षुद्रं मूढं द्रविणलोलुपम् ॥४१॥
किम् कृत्वा साधु मह्यम् स्यात्-
what by doing, well for me may be
न शपेत् वा जन: यथा
may not curse or the people, as
अदीर्घ-दर्शनम् क्षुद्रम्
not far-seeing, petty,
मूढम् द्रविण-लोलुपम्
foolish, wealth greedy of
'By doing what, may be beneficial for me? And may the people not curse me as being short-sighted, mean, foolish and greedy for wealth.'
दास्ये दुहितरं तस्मै स्त्रीरत्नं रत्नमेव च ।
उपायोऽयं समीचीनस्तस्य शान्तिर्न चान्यथा ॥४२॥
दास्ये दुहितरम् तस्मै
will give the daughter, to Him,
स्त्री-रत्नम् रत्नम्-एव च
of women the jewel, gem also and
उपाय:-अयम् समीचीन:-
way out, this is proper
तस्य शान्ति:-न च-अन्यथा
for that, peace not and otherwise
I will give my daughter, a jewel among the women, and the gem also to Him. This is the only proper way out for that sin. There will not be peace otherwise.
एवं व्यवसितो बुद्ध्या सत्राजित् स्वसुतां शुभाम् ।
मणिं च स्वयमुद्यम्य कृष्णायोपजहार ह ॥४३॥
एवम् व्यवसित: बुद्ध्या
thus deciding in the mind,
सत्राजित् स्व-सुताम् शुभाम्
Satraajit, own daughter blessed
मणिम् च स्वयम्-उद्यम्य
gem and, himself making an effort
कृष्णाय-उपजहार ह
for Krishna presented
Having thus made up his mind, Satraajit, himself took the initiative and presented his blessed daughter and the gem to Krishna.
तां सत्यभामां भगवानुपयेमे यथाविधि ।
बहुभिर्याचितां शीलरूपौदार्यगुणान्विताम् ॥४४॥
ताम् सत्यभामाम् भगवान्-
her, Satyabhaamaa, The Lord
उपयेमे यथा-विधि
married, with due ceremony,
बहुभि:-याचिताम् शील-रूप-
by many coveted, amiability, beauty,
औदार्य-गुण-अन्विताम्
magnanimity and such virtues having
The Lord married her, Satyabhaamaa, with due ceremony, who was coveted by many, and had virtues like amiability, beauty, and magnanimity.
भगवानाह न मणिं प्रतीच्छामो वयं नृप ।
तवास्तां देव भक्तस्य वयं च फलभागिन: ॥४५॥
भगवान्-आह न मणिम्
The Lord said, 'not the gem
प्रतीच्छाम: वयम् नृप
will take we, O King!
तव-आस्ताम् देव भक्तस्य
Yours may it be, of the diety's devotee,
वयम् च फल-भागिन:
we and the fruit will enjoy' (the gold)
The Lord said, 'O King we will not take the gem. May it be yours', the devotee of the Sun god. We will enjoy its fruit, that is, the gold that it yields.'
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे स्यमन्तकोपख्याने षट्पञ्चाशत्तम: अध्याय: ॥५६॥
Thus ends the fifty-sixth discourse, forming part of the story of Syamantaka, in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
