श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
विज्ञातार्थोऽपि गोविन्दो दग्धानाकर्ण्य पाण्डवान् ।

कुन्तीं च कुल्यकरणे सहरामो ययौ कुरून् ॥१॥


विज्ञात-अर्थ:-अपि गोविन्द:
knowing the truth, even, Govinda,
दग्धान्-आकर्ण्य पाण्डवान्
were burnt, hearing the Paandavas
कुन्तीम् च कुल्य-करणे
Kunti and for a friendly inquiry
सह-राम: ययौ कुरून्
with Balaraama went to the Kurus

Govinda, even though He knew the truth, hearing that the Paandavas and Kunti were burnt, for an obligatory friendly inquiry, with Balaraama went to the Kurus.


भीष्मं कृपं सविदुरं गान्धारीं द्रोणमेव च ।

तुल्यदु:खौ च सङ्गम्य हा कष्टमिति होचतु: ॥२॥


भीष्मम् कृपम् स-विदुरम्
Bheeshma, Kripaachaarya, with Vidura,
गान्धारीम् द्रोणम्-एव च
Gaandhaari, Drona also and
तुल्य-दु:खौ च सङ्गम्य
equally aggrieved and meeting
हा कष्टम्-इति ह-उचतु:
"Alas! What a pity!' thus indeed said (both)

Meeting with Bheeshma, Kripaachaarya, Vidura, Gaandhaari, and also Drona, who were equally grief stricken, 'Alas! What a pity!' thus both of them said indeed.


लब्ध्वैतदन्तरं राजन् शतधन्वानमूचतु: ।

अकूरकृतवर्माणौ मणि: कस्मान्न गृह्यते ॥३॥


लब्ध्वा-एतत्-अन्तरम् राजन्
finding meanwhile opportunity, O King!
शतधन्वानम्-ऊचतु:
to Shatadhanvaa said
अकूर-कृतवर्माणौ
Akroora and Kritavarmaa (the two)
मणि: कस्मात्-न गृह्यते
the gem what for do not take

O King! Meanwhile finding the opportunity of Krishna's absence, Akroora and Kritavarmaa, both said to Shatadhanvaa, 'For what reason do you not take the gem?'


योऽस्मभ्यं संप्रतिश्रुत्य कन्यारत्नं विगर्ह्य न: ।

कृष्णायादान्न सत्राजित् कस्मात् भ्रातरमन्वियात् ॥४॥


य:-अस्मभ्यम् संप्रतिश्रुत्य
who, to us promising
कन्या-रत्नम् विगर्ह्य न:
the maiden gem, ignoring us
कृष्णाय-आदात्-न सत्राजित्
to Krishna gave, not Satraajit
कस्मात् भ्रातरम्-अन्वियात्
why brother may not follow

Who, having promised the gem of maidens to us, has ignored us, and has given her away to Krishna. Why then should he not die, following the path of his brother?


एवं भिन्नमतिस्ताभ्यां सत्राजितमसत्तम: ।

शयानमवधील्लोभात् स पाप: क्षीणजीवित: ॥५॥


एवम् भिन्न-मति:-ताभ्याम्
thus, differently minded, by them both,
सत्राजितम्-असत्तम:
Satraajit, the wicked
शयानम्-अवधीत्-लोभात्
while sleeping killed, out of greed,
स: पाप: क्षीण-जीवित:
he vile, of short life

Thus, the wicked and vile Shatadhanvaa, whose mind was poisoned by them both, and whose life was shortened, out of greed killed Satraajit while he was asleep.


स्त्रीणां विक्रोशमानानां क्रन्दन्तीनामनाथवत् ।

हत्वा पशून् सौनिकवन्मणिमादाय जग्मिवान् ॥६॥


स्त्रीणाम् विक्रोशमानानाम्
as the women screamed
क्रन्दन्तीनाम्-अनाथवत्
wailed helplessly
हत्वा पशून् सौनिक-वत्-
killing the animals butcher like
मणिम्-आदाय
the gem taking went away

Even as the women were screaming and wailing helplessly, as a butcher kills an animal, Shatadhanvaa killed him, and went away taking the gem with him.


सत्यभामा च पितरं हतं वीक्ष्य शुचार्पिता ।

व्यलपत्तात तातेति हा हतास्मीति मुह्यती ॥७॥


सत्यभामा च पितरम् हतम्
Satyabhaamaa and father killed
वीक्ष्य शुच-अर्पिता
seeing, by grief overcome
व्यलपत्-तात तात-इति हा
wailed, 'Father! O father, thus,
हता-अस्मि-इति मुह्यती
killed am I', thus fainted

Satyabhaamaa saw her father slain, and overcome with grief, she wailed, 'Father! O father, finished am I', and fainted.


तैलद्रोण्यां मृतं प्रास्य जगाम गजसाह्वयम् ।

कृष्णाय विदितार्थाय तप्ताऽऽचख्यौ पितुर्वधम् ॥८॥


तैल-द्रोण्याम् मृतम् प्रास्य
in an oil tub, the deceased submerging,
जगाम गजसाह्वयम्
went to Hastinaapura
कृष्णाय विदित-अर्थाय
to Krishna, the Knower of the Truth
तप्ता-आचख्यौ पितु:-वधम्
the afflicted, and reported father's killing

The afflicted Satyabhaamaa immersed the deceased body in a tub of oil, and went to Hastinaapura, and reported to Krishna, who was already aware of the fact, of the killing of her father.


तदाकर्ण्येश्वरौ राजन्ननुसृत्य नृलोकताम् ।

अहो न: परमं कष्टमित्यस्राक्षौ विलेपतु: ॥९॥


तत्-आकर्ण्य-ईश्वरौ राजन्-
that hearing, The Lords, O King!
अनुसृत्य नृ-लोकताम्
Following the human tradition,
अहो न: परमम् कष्टम्-
'Alas! Ours is a great misfortune',
इति-अस्र-अक्षौ विलेपतु:
thus, tears filled eyes wept

The two Lords, Krishna and Balaraama, following the human practice, with their eyes full of tears, wailed and said, ''Alas! This is Our great misfortune', thus.


आगत्य भगवांस्तस्मात् सभार्य: साग्रज: पुरम् ।

शतधन्वानमारेभे हन्तुं हर्तुं मणिं तत: ॥१०॥


आगत्य भगवान्-तस्मात्
coming, The Lord from there,
स-भार्य: स-अग्रज: पुरम्
with the wife, with elder brother to the city
शतधन्वानम्-आरेभे हन्तुम्
Shatadhanvaa started to kill
हर्तुम् मणिम् तत:
retrieving the gem from there

The Lord came back from there to the city with His wife and His elder brother, and started making efforts to kill Shatadhanvaa and to retrieve the gem from there.


सोऽपि कृष्णोद्यमं ज्ञात्वा प्राणपरीप्सया ।

साहाय्ये कृतवर्माणमयाचत स चाब्रवीत् ॥११॥


स:-अपि कृष्ण-उद्यमम्
he also, Krishna's efforts
ज्ञात्वा प्राण-परीप्सया
knowing of, life to save
साहाय्ये कृतवर्माणम्-
for help Kritavarmaa
अयाचत स: च-अब्रवीत्
asked, he and said

Shatadhanvaa, knowing of Krishna's efforts, and eager to save his own life, asked Kritavarmaa for help, who said,…


नाहमीश्वरयो: कुर्यां हेलनं रामकृष्णयो: ।

को नु क्षेमाय कल्पेत तयोर्वृजिनमाचरन् ॥१२॥


न-अहम्-ईश्वरयो: कुर्याम्
not I of the two Gods will do
हेलनम् राम-कृष्णयो:
otherwise, of Balaraama and Krishna
क: नु क्षेमाय कल्पेत
who indeed well being expects
तयो:-वृजिनम्-आचरन्
of Them in offence acting

I will not do anything otherwise of the two Gods, Balaraama and Krishna. Indeed who expects well being, having acted in offence to Them?


कंस: सहानुगोऽपीतो यद्द्वेषात्त्याजित: श्रिया ।

जरासन्ध: सप्तदश संयुगान् विरथो गत: ॥१३॥


कंस: सह-अनुग:-अपीत:
Kansa with his followers was killed
यत्-द्वेषात्-त्याजित: श्रिया
by whose enmity, shorn of all glory
जरासन्ध: सप्तदश संयुगान्
Jaraasandha in seventeen battles,
विरथ: गत:
without chariot returned

By holding enmity towards Whom, Kansa was killed with his followers, and Jaraasandha escaped, deprived of his chariot from seventeen battles.


प्रत्याख्यात: स चाक्रूरं पार्ष्णिग्राहमयाचत ।

सोऽप्याह को विरुध्येत विद्वानीश्वरयोर्बलम् ॥१४॥


प्रत्याख्यात: स: च-अक्रूरम्
refused, he and to Akroora
पार्ष्णिग्राहम्-अयाचत
help sought
स:-अपि-आह क: विरुध्येत
he also said, who will go against
विद्वान्-ईश्वरयो:-बलम्
the wise, of the Two mighty's power

Refused by Kritavarmaa, Shatadhanvaa sought the help of Akroora. He also said,' Which wise person will go against the power of The Two Mighty Lords?'


य इदं लीलया विश्वं सृजत्यवति हन्ति च ।

चेष्टां विश्वसृजो यस्य न विदुर्मोहिताजया ॥१५॥


य: इदम् लीलया विश्वम्
Who this sportingly the universe
सृजति-अवति हन्ति च
creates, preserves, and destroys
चेष्टाम् विश्वसृज: यस्य
the deeds, the Creator (Brahmaa), Whose
न विदु:-मोहित-अजया
does not know, deluded by Maayaa

Who sportingly creates, preserves and destroys this universe. Whose deeds, even the creator Brahmaa does not know, as he is deluded by His Maayaa.


य: सप्तहायन: शैलमुत्पट्यैकेन पाणिना ।

दधार लीलया बाल उच्छिलीन्ध्रमिवार्भक: ॥१६॥


य: सप्त-हायन: शैलम्-
Who, of seven years (age), the mountain
उत्पट्य-एकेन पाणिना
uprooting, by one hand
दधार लीलया बाल:
uplifted sportingly the child
उच्छिलीन्ध्रम्-इव-अर्भक:
mushroom like a child

Who, a child of seven years, sportingly uprooted and uplifted the mountain on one hand, like a child would pluck a mushroom.


नमस्तस्मै भगवते कृष्णायाद्भुतकर्मणे ।

अनन्तायादिभूताय कूटस्थायात्मने नम: ॥१७॥


नम:-तस्मै भगवते
salutations to Him, The Lord
कृष्णाय-अद्भुत-कर्मणे
Krishna of marvellous deeds
अनन्ताय-आदि-भूताय
The Immortal, The Ancient Being
कूटस्थाय-आत्मने नम:
The Immutable Self, salutations

Salutations to Him, The Lord Krishna of marvellous deeds, The Immortal, The Ancient Being, The Immutable Self, salutations.


प्रत्याख्यात: स तेनापि शतधन्वा महामणिम् ।

तस्मिन् न्यस्याश्वमारुह्य शतयोजनगं ययौ ॥१८॥


प्रत्याख्यात: स: तेन-अपि
refused, he, by him also,
शतधन्वा महा-मणिम्
Shatadhanvaa, the great gem
तस्मिन् न्यस्य-अश्वम्-आरुह्य
with him entrusting, the horse mounting
शत-योजन-गम् ययौ
a hundred Yojanas capable of going, fled

Shatadhanvaa, refused by him also entrusted the great gem with him, and mounting a horse capable of going a hundred Yojanas, fled.


गरुडध्वजमारुह्य रथं रामजनार्दनौ ।

अन्वयातां महावेगैरश्वै राजन् गुरुद्रुहम् ॥१९॥


गरुड-ध्वजम्-आरुह्य
With Gaduda's sign flag, mounting
रथम् राम-जनार्दनौ
the chariot, Balaraama and Janaardana,
अन्वयाताम् महा-वेगै:-
followed (him), with great speed
अश्वै: राजन् गुरु-द्रुहम्
horses, O King! of the elders the slayer

O King! Balaraama and Krishna mounted the chariot with the flag marked with the sign of Gaduda, having horses of great speed and chased Shatadhanvaa, the slayer of the elders.


मिथिलायामुपवने विसृज्य पतितं हयम्

पद्भ्यामधावत् सन्त्रस्त: कृष्णोऽप्यन्वद्रवद् रुषा ॥२०॥


मिथिलायाम्-उपवने
in Mithila's outskirts' orchard,
विसृज्य पतितम् हयम्
abandoning the fallen horse,
पद्भ्याम्-अधावत् सन्त्रस्त:
on foot ran very alarmed
कृष्ण:-अपि-अन्वद्रवत् रुषा
Krishna also ran after him in anger

In an orchard on the outskirts of Mithila, he abandoned the fallen horse and very much alarmed, ran on foot. Krishna also ran after him, in great anger.


पदातेर्भगवांस्तस्य पदातिस्तिग्मनेमिना ।

चक्रेण शिर उत्कृत्य वाससो व्यचिनोन्मणिम् ॥२१॥


पदाते:-भगवान्-तस्य
of on foot, The Lord, his,
पदाति:-तिग्म-नेमिना
On foot (Himself), by sharp edged
चक्रेण शिर: उत्कृत्य
discus head cutting off
वासस: व्यचिनोत्-मणिम्
in the clothes searched for the gem

The Lord, Himself following on foot, him who was running on feet, cut off his head with the sharp edged discus and searched for the gem in his clothes.


अलब्धमणिरागत्य कृष्ण आहाग्रजान्तिकम् ।

वृथा हत: शतधनुर्मणिस्तत्र न विद्यते ॥२२॥


अलब्ध-मणि:-आगत्य कृष्ण
not getting the gem, coming Krishna
आह-अग्रज-अन्तिकम्
said to brother, near
वृथा हत: शतधनु:-
uselessly is killed Shatadhanu,
मणि:-तत्र न विद्यते
the gem there, not is present

Krishna, not getting the gem, came to His elder brother, and said to him, 'Shatadhanu was needlessly killed, the gem is not present there.'


तत आह बलो नूनं स मणि: शतधन्वना ।

कस्मिंश्चित् पुरुषे न्यस्तस्तमन्वेष पुरं व्रज ॥२३॥


तत: आह बल: नूनम्
then said Balaraama, 'surely,
स: मणि: शतधन्वना
that gem by Shatadhanvaa
कस्मिंश्चत् पुरुषे न्यस्त:-
with some person deposited,
तम्-अन्वेष पुरम् व्रज
him trace, to the city return

Then Balaraama said, 'Surely that gem must have been deposited with some person by Shatadhanvaa. Return to the city and trace that person.'


अहं विदेहमिच्छामि द्रष्टुं प्रियतमं मम ।

इत्युक्त्वा मिथिलां राजन् विवेश यदुनन्दन: ॥२४॥


अहम् विदेहम्-इच्छामि
I Videha, (Janaka) wish
द्रष्टुम् प्रियतमम् मम
to meet, very dear to me
इति-उक्त्वा मिथिलाम्
thus saying, in Mithilaa
राजन् विवेश यदु-नन्दन:
O King! entered Yadu's delight

I want to meet Videha, the king of Mithilaa, King Janaka, who is very dear to me. So saying, he, the delight of the Yadus' entered Mithilaa.


तं दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय मैथिल: प्रीतमानस: ।

अर्हयामास विधिवदर्हणीयं समर्हणै: ॥२५॥


तम् दृष्ट्वा सहसा-उत्थाय
him seeing, suddenly getting up
मैथिल: प्रीत-मानस:
the king of Mithilaa, delighted in mind
अर्हयामास विधिवत्-
worshipped with right procedure,
अर्हणीयम् समर्हणै:
the worthy of worship, with proper worship materials

Seeing Balaraama, the king of Mithilaa suddenly got up, and delighted in mind, worshipped him, who was worthy of worship with right procedures and proper articles of worship.


उवास तस्यां कतिचिन्मिथिलायां समा विभु: ।

मानित: प्रीतियुक्तेन जनकेन महात्मना ।

ततोऽशिक्षद् गदां काले धार्तराष्ट्र: सुयोधन: ॥२६॥


उवास तस्याम् कतिचित्-
stayed there, for some,
मिथिलायाम् समा विभु:
in Mithilaa, time the almighty (Balaraama)
मानित: प्रीति-युक्तेन
honoured by the love fulfilled
जनकेन महात्मना
Janaka, the high souled
तत:-अशिक्षत् गदाम् काले
then taught mace in time
धार्तराष्ट्र: सुयोधन:
Dhritraashtraa's son, Suyodhana

All mighty Balaraama stayed in Mithilaa for some time, honoured by the love fulfilled high souled Janaka. There, in proper time, he taught the use of the mace to Suyodhana, son of Dhritaraashtra.


केशवो द्वारकामेत्य निधनं शतधन्वन: ।

अप्राप्तिं च मणे: प्राह प्रियाया: प्रियकृद् विभु: ॥२७॥


केशव: द्वारकाम्-एत्य
Keshava (Krishna) to Dwaarakaa reaching
निधनम् शतधन्वन:
the death of Shatadhanvaa
अप्राप्तिम् च मणे: प्राह
not finding and the gem, said
प्रियाया: प्रिय-कृत् विभु:
to the beloved, willing to please, The Almighty

The Almighty Keshava (Krishna), on reaching Dwaarakaa, related the death of Shatadhanvaa and His not finding the gem, to His beloved, Satyabhaamaa, eager as He was to please her.


तत: स कारयामास क्रिया बन्धोर्हतस्य वै ।

साकं सुहृद्भिर्भगवान् या या: स्यु: साम्परायिका: ॥२८॥


तत: स: कारयामास
then, He, made to be done
क्रिया: बन्धो:-हतस्य वै
rituals of the father-in-law killed, indeed
साकम् सुहृद्भि:-भगवान्
with the relatives, The Lord
या: या: स्यु: साम्परायिका:
which all were conducive to welfare (of the deceased)

Then, with all the relatives, He, The Lord caused all the rituals to be done for the killed father-in-law, all of them which were conducive to the welfare of the deceased and all others.


अक्रूर: कृतवर्मा च श्रुत्वा शतधनोर्वधम् ।

व्यूषतुर्भयवित्रस्तौ द्वारकाया: प्रयोजकौ ॥२९॥


अक्रूर: कृतवर्मा च
Akroora Kritavarmaa and
श्रुत्वा शतधनो:-वधम्
hearing of Shatadhanvaa killing
व्यूषतु:-भय-वित्रस्तौ
fled, fear tormented
द्वारकाया: प्रयोजकौ
from Dwaarakaa, the instigators

On hearing of the killing of Shatadhanvaa, the instigators Akroora and Kritavarmaa, tormented with fear, fled from Dwaarakaa.


अक्रूरे प्रोषितेऽरिष्टान्यासन् वै द्वारकौकसाम् ।

शारीरा मानसास्तापा मुहुर्दैविकभौतिका: ॥३०॥


अक्रूरे प्रोषिते-अरिष्टानि-आसन्
on Akroora's going away, misfortunes appeared
वै द्वारका-औकसाम्
indeed for Dwaarakaa residents,
शारीरा: मानसा:-तापा:
physical mental agonies,
मुहु:-दैविक-भौतिका:
again and again, by divine and material (causes)

Akroora having gone away, indeed many misfortunes, mental and physical agonies, appeared for the residents of Dwaarakaa, caused by divine and material agencies.


इत्यङ्गोपदिशन्त्येके विस्मृत्य प्रागुदाहृतम् ।

मुनिवासनिवासे किं घटेतारिष्टदर्शनम् ॥३१॥


इति-अङ्ग-उपदिशन्ति-एके
thus, O Dear! (Pareekshit), declare some
विस्मृत्य प्राक्-उदाहृतम्
forgetting the before stated
मुनि-वास-निवासे
of the sages' Abode, residence,
किम् घटेत-अरिष्ट-दर्शनम्
can they happen, misfortunes to be seen

O Dear Pareekshit! So declare some people, forgetting what I have stated formerly, that, is it possible for misfortunes to be seen in the residence of Krishna, Who Himself is the very Abode of the sages?


देवेऽवर्षति काशीश: श्वफल्कायागताय वै ।

स्वसुतां गान्दिनीं प्रादात् ततोऽवर्षत् स्म काशिषु ॥३२॥


देवे-अवर्षति काशी-ईश:
on the gods (Indra) not raining, Kaashi's king,
श्वफल्काय-आगताय वै
to Shvaphalka, having come indeed
स्व-सुताम् गान्दिनीम् प्रादात्
own daughter to Gaandinee gave
तत:-अवर्षत् स्म काशिषु
then it rained in Kaashi

Once, the god of rains, Indra, did not shower rains on Kaashi. The king of Kaashi gave his own daughter to Shvaphalka, Akroora's father, who had come there. Then it had rained in Kaashi.


तत्सुतस्तत्प्रभावोऽसावक्रूरो यत्र यत्र ह ।

देवोऽभिवर्षते तत्र नोपतापा न मारिका: ॥३३॥


तत्-सुत:-तत्-प्रभाव:-
his, (Shvaphalka's) son, his personalities' effects having
असौ-अक्रूर: यत्र यत्र ह
this Akroora, where ever certainly (is)
देव:-अभिवर्षते तत्र
the gods rain there,
न-उपतापा: न मारिका:
are no agonies, no calamities

This Akroora has inherited the effects of the personality of his father, Shvaphalka. So that where ever he is the gods shower rains, and there are neither agonies nor calamities.


इति वृद्धवच: श्रुत्वा नैतावदिह कारणम् ।

इति मत्वा समानाय्य प्राहाक्रूरं जनार्दन: ॥३४॥


इति वृद्ध-वच: श्रुत्वा
this, of the elders words hearing,
न-एतावत्-इह कारणम्
not this here is the cause,
इति मत्वा समानाय्य
this knowing, respectfully called for
प्राह-अक्रूरम् जनार्दन:
and said to Akroora, Krishna

Hearing these words of the elders, and knowing that this was not the only cause, Krishna respectfully called for Akroora, and said to him,….


पूजयित्वाभिभाष्यैनं कथयित्वा प्रिया: कथा: ।

विज्ञाताखिलचित्तज्ञ: स्मयमान उवाच ह ॥३५॥


पूजयित्वा-अभिभाष्य-एनम्
respectfully welcoming him, speaking to him
कथयित्वा प्रिया: कथा:
sweetly, telling good things,
विज्ञात-अखिल-चित्त-ज्ञ:
knowing of all the minds The Knower,
स्मयमान उवाच ह
smilingly said indeed

Krishna welcomed him with respect, and sweetly talking to him told him of good things. Then He, The Knower of all minds, knowing of everything, smilingly said to him,….


ननु दानपते न्यस्तस्त्वय्यास्ते शतधन्वना ।

स्यमन्तको मणि: श्रीमान् विदित: पूर्वमेव न: ॥३६॥


ननु दानपते न्यस्त:-
undoubtedly, O Master of charities! deposited
त्वयि-आस्ते शतधन्वना
with you remains by Shatadhanvaa
स्यमन्तक: मणि: श्रीमान्
the Syamantaka gem, O Gentleman!
विदित: पूर्वम्-एव न:
known from before only to us

O Master of charities! undoubtedly, the Syamantaka gem, deposited with you by Shatadhanvaa, is with you. O Gentleman! This is known to us from before.


सत्राजितोऽनपत्यत्वाद् गृह्णीयुर्दुहितु: सुता: ।

दायं निनीयाप: पिण्डान् विमुच्यर्णं शेषितम् ॥३७॥


सत्राजित:-अनपत्यत्वात्
Satraajit, without a son being
गृह्णीयु:-दुहितु: सुता:
may take the daughter's sons
दायम् निनीय-आप: पिण्डान्
the property taking, of water and rice
विमुच्य-ऋणम् शेषितम्
paying off the debts, the rest

As Satraajit had no male issue, the sons of his daughter, Satyabhaamaa, will conduct the duties of offering water and rice, and paying off the debts, will inherit the rest of the property.


तथापि दुर्धरस्त्वन्यैस्त्वय्यास्तां सुव्रते मणि: ।

किन्तु मामग्रज: सम्यङ् न प्रत्येति मणिं प्रति ॥३८॥


तथा-अपि दुर्धर:-तु-अन्यै:-
even then, difficult be taken care of indeed, by others
त्वयि-आस्ताम् सुव्रते मणि:
with you may remain, O Observer of Vows! The gem
किन्तु माम्-अग्रज: सम्यङ्
but in Me, the elder brother, well
न प्रत्येति मणिम् प्रति
does not have faith the gem towards

The gem is difficult to be taken care of by any other, so then, it may remain with you, O Observer of Vows! Moreover, My elder brother does not have good faith in Me as far as the gem is concerned.


दर्शयस्व महाभाग बन्धूनां शान्तिमावह ।

अव्युच्छिन्ना मखास्तेऽद्य वर्तन्ते रुक्मवेदय: ॥३९॥


दर्शयस्व महाभाग
show, O Blessed One!
बन्धूनाम् शान्तिम्-आवह
to the relatives and peace bring
अव्युच्छिन्ना मखा:-ते-अद्य
regular sacrifices, yours, now,
वर्तन्ते रुक्मवेदय:
are done on gold altars

O Blessed One! Show the gem to the relatives, and bring peace. Though by the regular performances of sacrifices by you on the golden alters, now a days, betrays that you have the gem.


एवं सामभिरालब्ध: श्वफल्कतनयो मणिम् ।

आदाय वाससाच्छन्नं ददौ सूर्यसमप्रभम् ॥४०॥


एवम् सामभि:-आलब्ध:
thus by gentle words, reassured,
श्वफल्क-तनय: मणिम्
Shvaphalka's son, Akroora, the gem
आदाय वाससा-आच्छन्नम्
brought, by a cloth covered
ददौ सूर्य-समप्रभम्
and gave, Sun like brilliant

Thus reassured by the gentle words, Shvaphalka's son, Akroora, brought the Sun like radiant gem, covered by a cloth and gave it back.


स्यमन्तकं दर्शयित्वा ज्ञातिभ्यो रज आत्मन: ।

विमृज्य मणिना भूयस्तस्मै प्रत्यर्पयत् प्रभु: ॥४१॥


स्यमन्तकम् दर्शयित्वा

ज्ञातिभ्य: रज: आत्मन:
to the kinsmen, the blame of Himself
विमृज्य मणिना भूय:-
wiping away (caused) by the gem, again
तस्मै प्रत्यर्पयत् प्रभु:
to him returned The Almighty

The Almighty Lord showed the Syamantaka gem to the kinsmen, and thereby wiped off the blame on lying on Himself, caused by the gem, and returned it back to Akroora.


यस्त्वेतद् भगवत ईश्वरस्य विष्णोर्वीर्याढ्यं वृजिनहरं सुमङ्गलं च ।

आख्यानं पठति शृणोत्यनुस्मरेद् वा दुष्कीर्तिं दुरितमपोह्य याति शान्तिम् ॥४२॥


य:-तु-एतत् भगवत: ईश्वरस्य
who-so-ever, indeed, this, of The Lord Almighty
विष्णो:-वीर्य-आढ्यम्
Vishnu's exploits full of
वृजिन-हरम् सुमङ्गलम् च
sin dispelling, full of blessings and
आख्यानम् पठति शृणोति-
story, reads, listens to,
अनुस्मरेत् वा दुष्कीर्तिम् दुरितम्-
remembers or, evil reputation, sin
अपोह्य याति शान्तिम्
rid of, attains peace

Indeed, who-so-ever, reads, listens to, or remembers this story full of The Almighty Lord Vishnu's exploits, which is sin dispelling and blessings rendering, is rid of all sins and evil reputation, and attains everlasting peace.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे स्यमन्तकोपाख्याने सप्तपञ्चाशत्तम: अध्याय: ॥५७॥


Thus ends the fifty-seventh discourse, forming part of the story of Syamantaka, in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
