श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदा पाण्डवान् द्रष्टुं प्रतीतान् पुरुषोत्तम: ।
इन्द्रप्रस्थं गत: श्रीमान् युयुधानादिभिर्वृत: ॥१॥
एकदा पाण्डवान् द्रष्टुम्
One day, the Paandavas to meet
प्रतीतान् पुरुषोत्तम:
(the supposed to be burnt), the foremost of men
इन्द्रप्रस्थम् गत: श्रीमान्
to Indraprastha, went the glorious
युयुधान-आदिभि:-वृत:
Yuyudhaana and others surrounded by
One day, the glorious Krishna, the foremost among the men, surrounded by Yuyudhaana (Saatyaki) and others, went to Indraprastha to meet the Paandavas, who were supposed to have been burnt to ashes.
दृष्ट्वा तमागतं पार्था मुकुन्दमखिलेश्वरम् ।
उत्तस्थुर्युगपद् वीरा: प्राणा मुख्यमिवागतम् ॥२॥
दृष्ट्वा तम्-आगतम् पार्था:
seeing Him come, the sons of Prithaa,
मुकुन्दम्-अखिल-ईश्वरम्
Mukunda, of all The Ruler,
उत्तस्थु:-युगपद् वीरा:
rose together, the valiant,
प्राणा: मुख्यम्-इव-आगतम्
the life force, main (breath) like having come
The sons of Prithaa, the valiant Paandavas, at once rose together on seeing Krishna, The Ruler of all, having come, just like the senses become active on the return of respiration, the main life force.
परिष्वज्याच्युतं वीरा अङ्गसङ्गहतैनस: ।
सानुरागस्मितं वक्त्रं वीक्ष्य तस्य मुदं ययु: ॥३॥
परिष्वज्य-अच्युतम् वीरा:
embracing The Immortal Lord, the valiant
अङ्ग-सङ्ग-हत-एनस:
by (his) person's touch rid of sins
स-अनुराग-स्मितम् वक्त्रम्
with compassion smiling face,
वीक्ष्य तस्य मुदम् ययु:
looking at His, delight attained
Embracing The Immortal Lord, by the touch of His person, the valiant heroes were rid of sin, and they attained delight on seeing His smiling and loving face.
युधिष्ठिरस्य भीमस्य कृत्वा पादाभिवन्दनम् ।
फाल्गुनं परिरभ्याथ यमाभ्यां चाभिवन्दित: ॥४॥
युधिष्ठिरस्य भीमस्य
of Yudhishthira and Bheema
कृत्वा पाद-अभिवन्दनम्
the feet bowing at
फाल्गुनम् परिरभ्य-अथ
Arjuna hugging, then,
यमाभ्याम् च-अभिवन्दित:
by the youngers, (Nakula and Sahadeva) greeted
He bowed at the feet of Yudhishthira and Bheema, hugged Arjuna, and was greeted by the younger ones, Nakula and Sahadeva.
परमासन आसीनं कृष्णा कृष्णमनिन्दिता ।
नवोढा व्रीडिता किञ्चिच्छनैरेत्याभ्यवन्दत ॥५॥
परम-आसनम् आसीनम्
on an excellent seat seated
कृष्णा कृष्णम्-अनिन्दिता
Draupadi, to Krishna of flawless repute,
नवोढा व्रीडिता किञ्चित्-
newly wed, shyly somewhat
शनै:-एत्य-अभ्यवन्दत
slowly approaching bowed low
To Krishna, Who was seated on an excellent seat, Krishnaa, Draupadi, of flawless repute, newly wed, somewhat shyly, slowly approached, and bowed low in greeting.
तथैव सात्यकि: पार्थै: पूजितश्चाभिवन्दित: ।
निषसादासनेऽन्ये च पूजिता: पर्युपासत ॥६॥
तथा-एव सात्यकि: पार्थै:
in the same manner, Saatyaki, by the Paandavas
पूजित:-च-अभिवन्दित:
was worshipped and extolled,
निषसाद-आसने-अन्ये
was seated on a seat, another,
च पूजिता: पर्युपासत
and were honoured and sat around
In the same manner, Saatyaki was also worshipped and extolled by the Paandavas, and was seated on another seat. The others were also honoured, and sat around.
पृथां समागत्य कृताभिवादनस्तयातिहार्दार्द्रदृशाभिरम्भित: ।
आपृष्टवांस्तां कुशलं सहस्नुषां पितृश्वसारं परिपृष्टबान्धव: ॥७॥
पृथाम् समागत्य
Prithaa, Kunti, meeting,
कृत-अभिवादन:-तया-
done salutations, by her
अति-हार्द-आर्द्र-दृशा-
with warm heart, and moist eyes
अभिरम्भित:
was embraced
आपृष्टवान्-ताम् कुशलम्
asked her, well-being
सह-स्नुषाम् पितृश्वसारम्
with the daughter-in-law, to the father's sister
परिपृष्ट-बान्धव:
was questioned about His kinsfolk
He met Prithaa, Kunti, and performed salutations to her, and was embraced by her with a warm heart and moistened eyes. He inquired about her well-being and of the daughter-in-law, and was questioned about His kinsfolk.
तमाह प्रेमवैक्लव्यरुद्धकण्ठाश्रुलोचना ।
स्मरन्ती तान् बहून क्लेशान् क्लेशापायात्मदर्शनम् ॥८॥
तम्-आह प्रेम-वैक्लव्य-
to Him said, with love overwhelmed
रुद्ध-कण्ठा-अश्रु-लोचना
choked throat, tears filled eyes,
स्मरन्ती तान् बहून क्लेशान्
remembering those many sufferings
क्लेश-अपाय-आत्मदर्शनम्
sufferings removes, by Self revealing
She said, with love overwhelmed choked throat, and eyes brimming with tears, recalling her many sufferings, to Him Who reveals Himself to alleviate the agony of His devotees,…
तदैव कुशलं नोऽभूत् सनाथास्ते कृता वयम् ।
ज्ञातीन् न: स्मरता कृष्ण भ्राता मे प्रेषितस्त्वया ॥९॥
तदा-एव कुशलम् न:-अभूत्
then itself, happiness ours became,
सनाथा:-ते कृता: वयम्
with a protector, by You were made we
ज्ञातीन् न: स्मरता कृष्ण
own kinsfolk us remembering, O Krishna!
भ्राता मे प्रेषित:-त्वया
Cousin my was sent by You
O Krishna! We became happy then itself, and by You were blessed with having a protector, when You remembered us as Your kinsfolk and sent my cousin to ask after our well-fare.
न तेऽस्ति स्वपरभ्रान्तिर्विश्वस्य सुहृदात्मन: ।
तथापि स्मरतां शश्वत् क्लेशान् हंसि हृदि स्थित: ॥१०॥
न ते-अस्ति स्व-पर-भ्रान्ति:-
not Yours is, own or other, wrong notion
विश्वस्य सुहृत्-आत्मन:
of the universe The Friend and The Self
तथा-अपि स्मरताम् शश्वत्
even then, for those who remember You always,
क्लेशान् हंसि हृदि स्थित:
their sufferings remove in the heart present
The wrong notion of, this is mine and that is the other, is not Yours, as You are The very Soul and Friend of the universe. Even then, You are always present in the hearts of those who remember You constantly, and You remove their sufferings.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच -
Yudhishthira said -
किं नु आचरितं श्रेयो न वेदाहमधीश्वर ।
योगेश्वराणां दुर्दर्शो यन्नो दृष्ट: कुमेधसाम् ॥११॥
किम् नु आचरितम् श्रेय:
what certainly was done meritorious
न वेद-अहम्-अधीश्वर
do not know I, O Supreme Lord!
योग-ईश्वराणाम् दुर्दर्श:
for the Yoga masters, difficult to be sighted
यत्-न: दृष्ट: कुमेधसाम्
in that, to us are seen, the perverse minded
O Supreme Lord! I do not know, but, certainly some meritorious deed we have done, because, Your sight which even the masters of Yoga find difficult to get, that, we, the perverse minded have attained.
इति वै वार्षिकान् मासान् राज्ञा सोऽभ्यर्थित: सुखम् ।
जनयन् नयनानन्दमिन्द्रप्रस्थौकसां विभु: ॥१२॥
इति वै वार्षिकान् मासान्
thus, surely, for the rainy months
राज्ञा स:-अभ्यर्थित: सुखम्
by the king, he requested, comfortably (stayed there)
जनयन् नयन-आनन्दम्-
generating for the eyes joy
इन्द्रप्रस्थ-औकसाम् विभु:
for the Indraprastha residents, The Almighty
The Almighty, then, Who was certainly requested by the king, comfortably stayed there for the rainy four months, generating joy for the eyes of the residents of Indraprastha.
एकदा रथमारुह्य विजयो वानरध्वजम् ।
गाण्डीवं धनुरादाय तूणौ चाक्षयसायकौ ॥१३॥
एकदा रथम्-आरुह्य
one day, the chariot mounting
विजय: वानर-ध्वजम्
Arjuna, having the flag marked with monkey
गाण्डीवम् धनु:-आदाय
the Gaandeeva bow taking
तूणौ च-अक्षय-सायकौ
two quivers and with unexhausting arrows
One day, Arjuna, mounted the chariot having a flag marked with the sign of monkey, taking with him the Gaandeeva bow, and a pair of quivers of unexhausting arrows.
साकं कृष्णेन सन्नद्धो विहर्तुं विपिनं वनम् ।
बहुव्यालमृगाकीर्णं प्राविशत् परवीरहा ॥१४॥
साकम् कृष्णेन सन्नद्ध:
along with Krishna, armour clad,
विहर्तुम् विपिनम् वनम्
to sport in the dense forest
बहु-व्याल-मृग-आकीर्णम्
with many snakes and beasts infested,
प्राविशत् पर-वीर-हा
entered, the hostile warriors slayer
He, the slayer of the hostile warriors, along with Krishna, clad in armour, entered the dense forest infested with many snakes and beasts.
तत्राविध्यच्छरैर्व्याघ्रान् सूकरान् महिषान् रुरून् ।
शरभान् गवयान् खड्गान् हरिणाच्छशशल्लकान् ॥१५॥
तत्र-आविध्यत्-शरै:-व्याघ्रान्
there, pierced with arrows tigers,
सूकरान् महिषान् रुरून्
boars, bison, Rurus (deers)
शरभान् गवयान् खड्गान्
Sharabhas, Gavayas, rhinoceroses,
हरिणान्-शश-शल्लकान्
deers, hares and porcupines
There, they pierced with their arrows, tigers, boars, bison, Rurus (deers), Sharabhas, Gavayas, rhinoceroses, deers, hares and porcupines.
तान् निन्यु: किङ्करा राज्ञे मेध्यान् पर्वण्युपागते ।
तृट्परीत: परिश्रान्तो बीभत्सुर्यमुनामगात् ॥१६॥
तान् निन्यु: किङ्करा: राज्ञे
them, took the attendents, to the king,
मेध्यान् पर्वणि-उपागते
worthy of sacrifice, the festival approaching
तृट्-परीत: परिश्रान्त:
by thirst tormented, well exhausted
बीभत्सु:-यमुनाम्-अगात्
Arjuna to Yamuna came
The attendents took the games which were worthy for sacrifice, to the king, as the festival was approaching. Then Arjuna, tormented with thirst, and well exhausted came to the Yamuna river.
तत्रोपस्पृश्य विशदं पीत्वा वारि महारथौ ।
कृष्णौ ददृशतु: कन्यां चरन्तीं चारुदर्शनाम् ॥१७॥
तत्र-उपस्पृश्य विशदम्
there washed, he pure
पीत्वा वारि महारथौ
having drunk the water, the two master charioteers,
कृष्णौ ददृशतु: कन्याम्
both of them dark, saw a damsel,
चरन्तीम् चारु-दर्शनाम्
wandering, good looking
There, they, both of them of dark colour, the two master charioteers, having washed, and having drunk the fresh water, saw a good looking damsel wandering about.
तामासाद्य वरारोहां सुद्विजां रुचिराननाम् ।
पप्रच्छ प्रेषित: सख्या फाल्गुन: प्रमदोत्तमाम् ॥१८॥
ताम्-आसाद्य वरारोहाम्
her approaching, the beautiful,
सुद्विजाम् रुचिर-आननाम्
with good teeth, charming face,
पप्रच्छ प्रेषित: सख्या
asked sent by the friend (Krishna)
फाल्गुन: प्रमदा-उत्तमाम्
Arjuna, of the women the best
Sent by his friend Krishna, Arjuna approached the beautiful damsel with well set teeth and charming face, and to the best of the women, asked,….
का त्वं कस्यासि सुश्रोणि कुतोऽसि किं चिकीर्षसि ।
मन्ये त्वां पतिमिच्छन्तीं सर्वं कथय शोभने ॥१९॥
का: त्वम् कस्य-असि सुश्रोणि
who are you, whose are you, O Slender waisted One!
कुत:-असि किम् चिकीर्षसि
From where are you, what do you want,
मन्ये त्वाम् पतिम्-इच्छन्तीम्
(I) consider you, a husband looking for,
सर्वम् कथय शोभने
all do say O Pretty damsel!
O Pretty damsel! who are you, whose (daughter) are you, O Slender waisted One! From where are you, what do you want? I consider that you are looking for a husband, do say everything.
अहं देवस्य सवितुर्दुहिता पतिमिच्छती ।
विष्णुं वरेण्यं वरदं तप: परममास्थिता ॥२०॥
कालिन्दी-उवाच -
Kaalindee replied -
अहम् देवस्य सवितु:-
I am of the lord Sun's
दुहिता पतिम्-इच्छती
daughter, husband desiring
विष्णुम् वरेण्यम् वरदम्
Vishnu the most desireable, vows granting
तप: परमम्-आस्थिता
austerities severe placed in
I am the daughter of lord Sun. I desire as my husband, the most desireable, and vows granting Vishnu. And I am practicing severe austerities to attain Him.
नान्यं पतिं वृणे वीर तमृते श्रीनिकेतनम् ।
तुष्यतां मे स भगवान् मुकुन्दोऽनाथसंश्रय: ॥२१॥
न-अन्यम् पतिम् वृणे वीर
not anyone as husband choose (I), O Valiant One!
तम्-ऋते श्री-निकेतनम्
Him besides, of Goddess Shree The Abode
तुष्यताम् मे स: भगवान्
may be pleased with me, He, The Lord
मुकुन्द:-अनाथ-संश्रय:
Mukunda, of the helpless The Refuge
O Valiant One! I will choose no other than Him as my husband, Who is The Abode of Goddess Shree. May He, Lord Mukunda, The Refuge of the helpless be pleased with me.
कालिन्दीति समाख्याता वसामि यमुनाजले ।
निर्मिते भवने पित्रा यावदच्युतदर्शनम् ॥२२॥
कालिन्दी-इति समाख्याता
Kaalindee, thus called by name
वसामि यमुना-जले
live in the water of Yamunaa
निर्मिते भवने पित्रा
in a constructed palace by my father,
यावत्-अच्युत-दर्शनम्
until The Immortal Lord (I) see
I am called by the name of Kaalindee and I live in a palace constructed by my father, under the water of Yamuna, and will live there, unless and until I see The Immortal Lord.
तथावदत् गुडाकेशो वासुदेवाय सोऽपि ताम् ।
रथमारोप्य तद् विद्वान् धर्मराजमुपागमत् ॥२३॥
तथा-अवदत् गुडाकेश:
all that said Arjuna
वासुदेवाय स:-अपि ताम्
to Vaasudeva, He also, her
रथम्-आरोप्य तत् विद्वान्
in the chariot placed, all that knowing
धर्मराजम्-उपागमत्
to Yudhishthira went
Arjuna reported all that to Vaasudeva. He also, The Knower of everything, placed her in the chariot and went to Yudhishthira.
यदैव कृष्ण: सन्दिष्ट: पार्थानां परमाद्भुतम् ।
कारयामास नगरं विचित्रं विश्वकर्मणा ॥२४॥
यदा-एव कृष्ण: सन्दिष्ट:
when also Krishna was requested
पार्थानाम् परम-अद्भुतम्
for the Paandavas a very wonderful
कारयामास नगरम्
had got made a city
विचित्रम् विश्वकर्मणा
picturesque, by Vishvakarmaa
When Krishna was requested by the Paandavas, He got made a city for them by Vishvakarmaa, which was wonderful and very picturesque.
भगवांस्तत्र निवसन् स्वानां प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
अग्नये खाण्डवं दातुमर्जुनस्यास सारथि: ॥२५॥
भगवान्-तत्र निवसन्
The Lord, there living,
स्वानाम् प्रिय-चिकीर्षया
for own people (the Paandavas) good wanting to do
अग्नये खाण्डवम् दातुम्-
to the fire, Khaandava to give
अर्जुनस्य-आस सारथि:
of Arjuna had become the charioteer
Living there, The Lord wanted to do good for His own people, the Paandavas. Once, to give Khaandava to the lord of Fire, He had become the charioteer of Arjuna.
सोऽग्निस्तुष्टो धनुरदाद्-हयाञ्छ्वेतान् रथं नृप ।
अर्जुनायाक्षयौ तूणौ वर्म चाभेद्यमस्त्रिभि: ॥२६॥
स:-अग्नि:-तुष्ट: धनु:-अदात्-
that, Fire, pleased, bow gave
हयान्-श्वेतान् रथम् नृप
horses white chariot, O King!
अर्जुनाय-अक्षयौ तूणौ
to Arjuna inexhaustible quivers
वर्म च-अभेद्यम्-अस्त्रिभि:
armour and unpierceable by archers
That god of Fire, pleased by that, gave to Arjuna a bow, a chariot drawn by white horses, a pair of inexhaustible quivers and an armour not piercable by the archers.
मयश्च मोचितो वह्ने: सभां सख्य उपाहरत् ।
यस्मिन् दुर्योधनस्यासीज्जलस्थलदृशिभ्रम: ॥२७॥
मय:-च मोचित: वह्ने:
Maya and was saved from fire,
सभाम् सख्ये उपाहरत्
a hall for the friend gave
यस्मिन् दुर्योधनस्य-आसीत्-
in which Duryodhana had
जल-स्थल-दृशि-भ्रम:
the water and floor optical illusion
Maya was saved from fire by Arjuna. As a token of gratitude he built and gave an assembly hall to his friend Arjuna, by which Duryodhana had the optical illusion of water and floor.
स तेन समनुज्ञात: सुहृद्भिश्चानुमोदित: ।
आययौ द्वारकां भूय: सात्यकिप्रमुखैर्वृत: ॥२८॥
स: तेन समनुज्ञात:
He, The Lord, by him permitted
सुहृद्भि:-च-अनुमोदित:
by the friends and accepted,
आययौ द्वारकाम् भूय:
came back to Dwaarakaa again,
सात्यकि-प्रमुखै:-वृत:
Saatyaki and the leaders accompanied by
He, The Lord, permitted by Arjuna, and with the consent of other friends, again came back to Dwaarakaa, accompanied by Saatyaki and other eminent people.
अथोपयेमे कालिन्दीं सुपुण्यर्त्वृक्ष ऊर्जिते ।
वितन्वन् परमानन्दं स्वानां परममङ्गलम् ॥२९॥
अथ-उपयेमे कालिन्दीम्
then, married Kaalindee
सुपुण्य-ऋतु-ऋक्षे ऊर्जिते
(when) very good season and planets had appeared
वितन्वन् परम-आनन्दम्
spreading great joy
स्वानाम् परम-मङ्गलम्
for His own people, The Supreme Felicity
Then, He, The Supreme Felicity, married Kaalindee, when the season was very good and the planets were favourable, spreading great joy among His own people.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ दुर्योधनवशानुगौ ।
स्वयंवरे स्वभगिनीं कृष्णे सक्तां न्यषेधताम् ॥३०॥
विन्द-अनुविन्द-अवन्त्यौ
Vinda and Anuvinda of Avanti
दुर्योधन-वश-अनुगौ
in Duryodhana influence, following him,
स्वयंवरे स्व-भगिनीम्
in the choosing ceremony, own sister
कृष्णे सक्ताम् न्यषेधताम्
in Krishna devoted, deterred
The rulers of Avanti, Vinda and Anuvinda, were under the influence of Duryodhana and followed his wishes. In the ceremony of choosing the husband, they deterred their own sister who was devoted to Shree Krishna.
राजाधिदेव्यास्तनयां मित्रविन्दां पितृष्वसु: ।
प्रसह्य हृतवान् कृष्णो राजन् राज्ञां प्रपश्यताम् ॥३१॥
राजाधिदेव्या:-तनयाम्
Raajaadhidevi daughter
मित्रविन्दाम् पितृस्वषु:
Mitravindaa, His (Krishna's) father's sister
प्रसह्य हृतवान् कृष्ण:
forcibly took away Krishna,
राजन् राज्ञाम् प्रपश्यताम्
O King! as the kings looked on
O King! Krishna forcibly took away Mitravindaa, the daughter of Raajaadhidevi, Krishna's father's sister, even as the kings looked on.
नग्नजिन्नाम कौसल्य आसीद् राजातिधार्मिक: ।
तस्य सत्याभवत् कन्या देवी नाग्नजिती नृप ॥३२॥
नग्नजित्-नाम कौसल्य: आसीत्
Nagnajita named of Kosala was
राजा-अति-धार्मिक:
king very pious
तस्य सत्या-अभवत् कन्या
his Satya became the daughter
देवी नाग्नजिती नृप
brilliant, Nagnajita, O King!
O King! the king of Kosala, named Nagnajita was very pious. His daughter was Satyaa, also known as Lady Nagnajitee.
न तां शेकुर्नृपा वोढुमजित्वा सप्त गोवृषान् ।
तीक्ष्णशृङ्गान् सुदुर्धर्षान् वीरगन्धासहान् खलान् ॥३३॥
न ताम् शेकु:-नृपा: वोढुम्-
not her were able the princes to marry,
अजित्वा सप्त गोवृषान्
without winning seven bulls
तीक्ष्ण-शृङ्गान् सुदुर्धर्षान्
with sharp horns, very difficult to be subdued,
वीर-गन्ध-असहान् खलान्
of the heroes' smell not bearing and wicked
The Princes were not able to marry her, without winning over the seven bulls, who were very wicked, very difficult to be subdued, having sharp horns, and who could not bear the smell of heroes.
तां श्रुत्वा वृषजिल्लभ्यां भगवान् सात्वतां पति: ।
जगाम कौसल्यपुरं सैन्येन महता वृत: ॥३४॥
ताम् श्रुत्वा वृषजित्-लभ्याम्
her hearing, by the bull winner to be gained
भगवान् सात्वताम् पति:
The Lord of the Yadus the protector
जगाम कौसल्य-पुरम्
went to Kosala city
सैन्येन महता वृत:
with a army big following
The Lord The Protector of the Yadus, on hearing that she could be gained by the one who subdued the bulls, went to the city of Kosala followed by a big army.
स: कोसलपति: प्रीत: प्रत्युत्थानासनादिभि: ।
अर्हणेनापि गुरुणा पूजयन् प्रतिनन्दित: ॥३५॥
स: कोसल-पति: प्रीत:
he, the Kosala ruler, delighted,
प्रत्युत्थान-आसन-आदिभि:
by getting up, giving a seat and other
अर्हणेन-अपि गुरुणा
articles also valuable,
पूजयन् प्रतिनन्दित:
worshipped, in return was honoured
The King of Kosala, was delighted and received Krishna with getting up and offering a seat, and worshipped Him with valuable articles, and was honoured in return.
वरं विलोक्याभिमतं समागतं नरेन्द्रकन्या चकमे रमापतिम् ।
भूयादयं मे पतिराशिषोऽमला: करोतु सत्या यदि मे धृतो व्रतै: ॥३६॥
वरम् विलोक्य-अभिमतम्
proper for a spouse, seeing after her heart,
समागतम् नरेन्द्र-कन्या
having come, the king's daughter
चकमे रमा-पतिम्
wished Ramaa's spouse (Krishna)
भूयात्-अयम् मे पति:-
may he be my husband
आशिष:-अमला: करोतु
desires mine pure render
सत्या यदि मे धृत: व्रतै:
true, if by me (He) was held by sacred vows
Satyaa, seeing the desireable spouse and after her heart, having come, she wished that Ramaa's husband (Krishna) be her husband, if she had held Him only as her spouse when observing the sacred vows, and wished that her pure desires be rendered true.
यत्पादपङ्कजरज: शिरसा बिभर्ति श्रीरब्जज: सगिरिश: सहलोकपालै: ।
लीलातनू: स्वकृतसेतुपरीप्सयेश: काले दधत् स भगवान् मम केन तुष्येत् ॥३७॥
यत्-पाद-पङ्कज-रज:
Whose feet lotus dust
शिरसा बिभर्ति श्री:-अब्जज:
on head bear Laxmi, Brahmaa,
स-गिरिश: सह-लोकपालै:
with Shiva, along with the guardians
लीला-तनू: स्व-कृत-सेतु-
sporting forms by Himself set morals
परीप्सया-ईश: काले दधत्
to maintain, The almighty Lord, at times assumes
स: भगवान् मम केन तुष्येत्
He, The Lord, by my which effort will be pleased
The almighty Lord, Whose feet lotus's dust, Laxmi, Brahmaa, with Shiva, and the guardians bear on their heads, Who from time to time sportingly assumes various forms, to up keep the moralities set by Himself, That, Lord, by which of my efforts may be pleased?
अर्चितं पुनरित्याह नारायण जगत्पते ।
आत्मानन्देन पूर्णस्य करवाणि किमल्पक: ॥३८॥
अर्चितम् पुन:-इति-आह
to (Him) the worshipped, again this said,
नारायण जगत्पते
O Naaraayana! O Lord of the universe!
आत्म-आनन्देन पूर्णस्य
by Self bliss saturated
करवाणि किम्-अल्पक:
should do what, (I) of meagre means
To Krishna, Who had been worshipped, the king of Kosala said again, 'O Naaraayana! O Lord of the universe! For You, Who are saturated in Your own divine bliss, what can I, of meagre means do?
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तमाह भगवान् हृष्ट: कृतासनपरिग्रह: ।
मेघगम्भीरया वाचा सस्मितं कुरुनन्दन ॥३९॥
तम्-आह भगवान् हृष्ट:
to him said The Lord, very delighted
कृत-आसन-परिग्रह:
offered seat having taken
मेघ-गम्भीरया वाचा
in cloud like deep voice
सस्मितम् कुरु-नन्दन
smilingly, O Scion of the Kurus!
O Scion of the Kurus! The Lord having taken the offered seat, was very delighted, and smilingly, in a cloud like deep voice, said to him….
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
नरेन्द्र याच्ञा कविभिर्विगर्हिता राजन्यबन्धोर्निजधर्मवर्तिन: ।
तथापि याचे तव सौहृदेच्छया कन्यां त्वदीयां न हि शुल्कदा वयम् ॥४०॥
नरेन्द्र याच्ञा कविभि:-
'O King! Solicitation by the wise
विगर्हिता राजन्य-बन्धो:-
is condemned by the Kshatriya people
निज-धर्म-वर्तिन:
own duties pursuing
तथा-अपि याचे तव सौहृद-
even then, (I) ask for your friendship
इच्छया कन्याम् त्वदीयाम्
desiring daughter yours'
न हि शुल्कदा वयम्
not indeed price payers are we.'
'O King! Solicitation is condemned by the wise, specially so for the Kshatriya people who are engaged in their duties. Even then with the desire of gaining your friendship, I ask for your daughter, and indeed we are not price payers.'
राजा-उवाच -
The king said -
कोऽन्यस्तेऽभ्यधिको नाथ कन्यावर इहेप्सित: ।
गुणैकधाम्नो यस्याङ्गे श्रीर्वसत्यनपायिनी ॥४१॥
क:-अन्य:-ते-अभ्यधिक: नाथ
who other than You is more, O Master!
कन्या-वर इह-ईप्सित:
for a daughter, a match, is desireable
गुण-एक-धाम्न: यस्य-अङ्गे
of all the virtues, the one resort, on Whose body
श्री:-वसति-अनपायिनी
Shree dwells constantly
O Lord! Who other than You can be a more desireable match for my daughter, Who are the One Abode for all the virtues and on Whose bosom Laxmi dwells constantly.
किं त्वस्माभि: कृत: पूर्वं समय: सात्वतर्षभ ।
पुंसां वीर्यपरीक्षार्थं कन्यावरपरीप्सया ॥४२॥
किम्-तु-अस्माभि: कृत: पूर्वम्
what but by us, was made already
समय: सात्वत-ऋषभ
a vow of the Yadus the scion!
पुंसाम् वीर्य-परीक्षा-अर्थम्
of the people, the prowess to test for
कन्या-वर परीप्सया
the maiden's suitable match intending to
O Scion of the Yadus! With an intention of finding a proper match for the maiden, we had already made a vow to test the prowess of the suitors.
सप्तैते गोवृषा वीर दुर्दान्ता दुरवग्रहा: ।
एतैर्भग्ना: सुबहवो भिन्नगात्रा नृपात्मजा: ॥४३॥
सप्त-एते गोवृषा: वीर
seven these, bulls, O Valliant One!
दुर्दान्ता: दुरवग्रहा:
difficult to be tamed, and to be brought in control,
एतै:-भग्ना: सु-बहव:
by them are broken many a
भिन्न-गात्रा: नृप-आत्मजा:
broken limbs the kings' sons
O Valliant One! These seven bulls are difficult to be tamed and difficult to be brought in control. The enthusiasm of many a kings' sons is broken, their limbs having been broken by these bulls.
यदिमे निगृहीता: स्युस्त्वयैव यदुनन्दन ।
वरो भवानभिमतो दुहितुर्मे श्रिय: पते ॥४४॥
यत्-इमे निगृहीता: स्यु:-
that, these in control are
त्वया-एव यदु-नन्दन
by You only, O Yadus' delight!
वर: भवान्-अभिमत:
match You desired
दुहितु:-मे श्रिय: पते
for daughter mine, O Spouse of Shree!
O Delight of the Yadus! That You are the only One Who can tame these bulls, You are The desired match for my daughter, O Spouse of Goddess Shree!
एवं समयमाकर्ण्य बद्ध्वा परिकरं प्रभु: ।
आत्मानं सप्तधा कृत्वा न्यगृह्णाल्लीलयैव तान् ॥४५॥
एवम् समयम्-आकर्ण्य
such vow hearing
बद्ध्वा परिकरम् प्रभु:
tying the girdle, The Almighty Lord,
आत्मानम् सप्तधा कृत्वा
Himself in seven parts becoming
न्यगृह्णात्-लीलया-एव तान्
tamed sportingly only them
Hearing of such a vow, The Almighty Lord tied His girdle and presented Himself in seven forms, and sportingly tamed them all.
बद्ध्वा तान् दामभि: शौरिर्भग्नदर्पान् हतौजस: ।
व्यकर्षल्लीलया बद्धान् बालो दारुमयान् यथा ॥४६॥
बद्ध्वा तान् दामभि: शौरि:-
tying them up, with ropes, Shauree (Krishna)
भग्न-दर्पान् हत-ओजस:
broken pride, beaten spirited
व्यकर्षत्-लीलया बद्धान्
dragged sportingly the tied,
बाल: दारुमयान् यथा
a child wooden just as
Krishna tied them, the bulls of broken pride and beaten spirit, with a rope, and dragged them sportingly, just as a child would tie and drag wooden toy bulls.
तत: प्रीत: सुतां राजा ददौ कृष्णाय विस्मित: ।
तां प्रत्यगृह्णाद् भगवान् विधिवत् सदृशीं प्रभु: ॥४७॥
तत: प्रीत: सुताम्-राजा
then, delighted, the daughter, the king
ददौ कृष्णाय विस्मित:
gave to Krishna, full of amazement
ताम् प्रत्यगृह्णात् भगवान्
her married The Lord
विधिवत् सदृशीम् प्रभु:
with due ceremony, worthy of Him, The Almighty
Then, the king full of amazement and with delight, gave his daughter to Krishna, The Almighty Lord married her, who was worthy of Him, with due ceremonies.
राजपत्न्यश्च दुहितु: कृष्णं लब्ध्वा प्रियं पतिम् ।
लेभिरे परमानन्दं जातश्च परमोत्सव: ॥४८॥
राजपत्न्य:-च दुहितु:
the queens and of their daughter's
कृष्णम् लब्ध्वा प्रियम् पतिम्
Krishna getting, the dear husband
लेभिरे परम-आनन्दम्
attained supreme joy
जात:-च परम-उत्सव:
ensued and great rejoicing
The queens attained supreme joy by getting Krishna as the dear husband of their daughter, and there ensued great rejoicing.
शङ्खभेर्यानका नेदुर्गीतवाद्यद्विजाशिष: ।
नरा नार्य: प्रमुदिता: सुवास: स्रगलङ्कृता: ॥४९॥
शङ्ख-भेरी-अनका: नेदु:-
conchs, trumpets, drums sounded,
गीत-वाद्य-द्विज-आशिष:
vocal instrumental music, Braahmanas' blessings
नरा: नार्य: प्रमुदिता:
men women were overjoyed
सुवास: स्रक्-अलङ्कृता:
decked in good clothes and garlands
Conchs, trumpets, drums were sounded, vocal and instrumental music was played, Braahmanas gave blessings, and men and women decked in good clothes and garlands, were overjoyed.
दशधेनुसहस्राणि पारिबर्हमदाद् विभु: ।
युवतीनां त्रिसाहस्रं निष्कग्रीवसुवाससाम् ॥५०॥
दश-धेनु-सहस्राणि
ten cows thousands
पारिबर्हम्-अदात् विभु:
in dowry gave the king
युवतीनाम् त्रि-साहस्रम्
maids three thousand
निष्क-ग्रीव-सुवाससाम्
golden chain in necks, well dressed
The king gave in dowry ten thousand cows, and three thousand well dressed maids with golden chain in the necks,….
नवनागसहस्राणि नागाच्छतगुणान् रथान् ।
रथाच्छतगुणानश्वानश्वाच्छतगुणान् नरान् ॥५१॥
नव-नाग-सहस्राणि
nine elephants thousand
नागात्-शत-गुणान् रथान्
of the elephants hundred times chariots
रथात्-शत-गुणान्-अश्वान्-
of the chariots hundred times horses,
अश्वात्-शत-गुणान् नरान्
of the horses hundred times men
And he gave nine thousand elephants, of the elephants a hundred times more chariots, of the chariots hundred times horses, of the horses hundred times as many menservants.
दम्पती रथमारोप्य महत्या सेनया वृतौ ।
स्नेहप्रक्लिन्नहृदयो यापयामास कोसल: ॥५२॥
दम्पती रथम्-आरोप्य
the couple in the chariot placing
महत्या सेनया वृतौ
by a large army attended,
स्नेह-प्रक्लिन्न-हृदय:
with affection melted heart
यापयामास कोसल:
sent the Kosala king
The king of Kosala, with a heart melted with affection, placed the couple in a chariot, sent them, with a large army in attendance.
श्रुत्वैतद् रुरुधुर्भूपा नयन्तं पथि कन्यकाम् ।
भग्नवीर्य: सुदुर्मर्षा यदुभिर्गोवृषै: पुरा ॥५३॥
श्रुत्वा-एतत् रुरुधु:-भूपा:
hearing this, obstructed the kings,
नयन्तम् पथि कन्यकाम्
(Him) taking on the way, the damsel,
भग्न-वीर्य: सुदुर्मर्षा:
broken of prowess, unbearable,
यदुभि:-गो-वृषै: पुरा
by the Yadus', by the cows and bulls formerly
On hearing this, the unbearable kings, whose prowess was broken by the Yadus' and by the cows and bulls formerly, obstructed Krishna on the way as He was taking away the damsel.
तानस्यत: शरव्रातान् बन्धुप्रियकृदर्जुन: ।
गाण्डीवी कालयामास सिंह: क्षुद्रमृगानिव ॥५४॥
तान्-अस्यत: शर-व्रातान्
them, (who were) discharging arrow showers
बन्धु-प्रिय-कृत्-अर्जुन:
of friends benefit doer Arjuna
गाण्डीवी कालयामास
the Gaandeeva wielder made to flee
सिंह: क्षुद्र-मृगान्-इव
a lion petty beast just like
The Gaandeeva bow wielder Arjuna, keen to do good for his friends, made the kings flee who were discharging volleys of arrows, even as the lion drives away petty beasts.
पारिबर्हमुपागृह्य द्वारकामेत्य सत्यया ।
रेमे यदूनामृषभो भगवान् देवकीसुत: ॥५५॥
पारिबर्हम्-उपागृह्य
the dowry taking
द्वारकाम्-एत्य सत्यया
to Dwaarakaa having come with Satyaa
रेमे यदूनाम्-ऋषभ:
enjoyed, of the Yadu's the foremost
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son
The Lord, Devaki's son, the foremost of the Yadus, came to Dwaarakaa with the dowry and there enjoyed with Satyaa.
श्रुतकीर्ते: सुतां भद्रामुपयेमे पितृष्वसु: ।
कैकेयीं भ्रातृभिर्दत्तां कृष्ण: सन्तर्दनादिभि: ॥५६॥
श्रुतकीर्ते: सुताम् भद्राम्-
Shrutakeertee's daughter Bhadraa,
उपयेमे पितृष्वसु:
married, of father's sister
कैकेयीम् भ्रातृभि:-दत्ताम्
Kaikeya (the princess) by the brothers given,
कृष्ण: सन्तर्दन-आदिभि:
Krishna, with Santardana and others
Krishna married the daughter of Shrutakeerti, who was the sister of His father, Bhadraa, the princess of Kaikeya, given to Him by her brothers, Santardana and others.
सुतां च मद्राधिपतेर्लक्ष्मणां लक्षणैर्युताम् ।
स्वयंवरे जहारैक: स सुपर्ण: सुधामिव ॥५७॥
सुताम् च मद्र-अधिपते:-
the daughter, and of Madra the king
लक्ष्मणाम् लक्षणै:-युताम्
Lakshmana, auspicious marks with
स्वयंवरे जहार-एक: स:
in the self-selecting ceremony, took away single handed He,
सुपर्ण: सुधाम्-इव
Gaduda the nectar like
He, single handedly took away the daughter of the king of Madra, Lakshmana, who was endowed with auspicious marks, from the self-selecting of a husband ceremony, just as Gaduda had taken away the nectar.
अन्याश्चैवंविधा भार्या: कृष्णस्यासन् सहस्रश: ।
भौमं हत्वा तन्निरोधादाहृताश्चारुदर्शना: ॥५८॥
अन्या:-च-एवम्-विधा: भार्या:
others, and such types wives
कृष्णस्य-आसन् सहस्रश:
of Krishna were thousands
भौमम् हत्वा तत्-निरोधात्-
Bhauma having killed, from his prison
आहृता:-चारु-दर्शना:
rescued good looking
Krishna had such types of wives in thousands. Having killed Bhaumaasura, He had rescued them from his captivity, who were good looking.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां उत्तरार्धे अष्टमहिष्युद्वाहो नामाष्टपञ्चाशत्तम: अध्याय: ॥५८॥
Thus ends the fifty-eighth discourse entitled 'Shree Krishna's marriage with (the rest of) His eight principal spouses,' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
