The King said -
यथा हतो भगवता भौमो येन च ता: स्त्रिय: ।
निरुद्धा एतदाचक्ष्व विक्रमं शार्ङ्गधन्वन: ॥१॥

the exploit of The Shaaranga bow Wielder
Do recount that exploit of Lord Krishna, The Wielder of the Shaaranga bow, by which the demon Bhaumaasura, (Narakaasura) was killed who had kept those women in captivity.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इन्द्रेण हृतच्छत्रेण हृतकुण्डलबन्धुना ।
हृतामराद्रिस्थानेन ज्ञापितो भौमचेष्टितम् ।
सभार्यो गरुडारूढ: प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरं ययौ ॥२॥
इन्द्रेण हृतच्छत्रेण
by Indra, umbrella was snatched,
हृतकुण्डल बन्धुना
snatched were the earrings by the relative
हृत-अमर-अद्रि-स्थानेन
evicted the gods from the mountain summit
ज्ञापित: भौम-चेष्टितम्
was informed of Bhaumaasura's deeds
सभार्य: गरुड-आरूढ:
with His wife, on Gaduda mounting
प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरम् ययौ
to Praagjyotishpura went
Krishna, was informed by Indra whose umbrella had been snatched, and by the relative whose earrings had been snatched, and by the gods who were evicted from the summit of the mount Mandaara, about the misdeeds of Bhaumaasura. He, with His wife, mounted on Gaduda went to Praagjyotishpura.
गिरिदुर्गै: शस्त्रदुर्गैर्जलाग्न्यनिलदुर्गमम् ।
मुरपाशायुतैर्घोरैर्दृढै: सर्वत आवृतम् ॥३॥
गिरि-दुर्गै: शस्त्र-दुर्गै:-
by mountain ranges fortified, weapons fortified,
जल-अग्नि-अनिल-दुर्गमम्
by water, fire and wind rendered unapproachable,
मुर-पाश-अयुतै:-घोरै:-
and by Muraasura's snares thousands, fierce
दृढै: सर्वत: आवृतम्
and strong from all sides surrounded
It was fortified by ranges of mountains, and by weapons, and was rendered unapproachable by water, fire and wind. Moreover it was surrounded by thousands of fierce and strong snares laid by Muraasura's.
गदया निर्विभेदाद्रीन् शस्त्रदुर्गाणि सायकै: ।
चक्रेणाग्निं जलं वायुं मुरपाशांस्तथासिना ॥४॥
गदया निर्विभेद-अद्रीन्
by the mace shattered the mountains
शस्त्र-दुर्गाणि सायकै:
the weapons' fortifications by arrows,
चक्रेण-अग्निम् जलम् वायुम्
by the discus the fire, water and wind,
मुर-पाशान्-तथा-असिना
Muraasura's snares also by the sword
Krishna shattered the mountains by the mace, the fortifications of weapons by the arrows, fire water and wind by the discus and the snares of Muraasura's by the sword.
शङ्खनादेन यन्त्राणि हृदयानि मनस्विनाम् ।
प्राकारं गदया गुर्व्या निर्बिभेद गदाधर: ॥५॥
शङ्ख-नादेन यन्त्राणि
by the conch blast the engines,
हृदयानि मनस्विनाम्
the hearts of the gallant protectors,
प्राकारम् गदया गुर्व्या
the mote by the mace heavy
निर्बिभेद गदाधर:
shattered The Mace Wielder
The Mace Wielder shattered the engines on the mountains by the blast of the conch, and also the hearts of the gallant protectors, and smashed the mote by the heavy mace.
पाञ्चजन्यध्वनिं श्रुत्वा युगान्ताशनिभीषणम् ।
मुर: शयान उत्तस्थौ दैत्य: पञ्चशिरा जलात् ॥६॥
पाञ्चजन्य-ध्वनिम् श्रुत्वा
of Paanchajanya (the conch) sound hearing
युगान्त-अशनि-भीषणम्
on the Kalpa's end, thunder terrible
मुर: शयान: उत्तस्थौ दैत्य:
Mura, sleeping arose the demon
पञ्चशिरा: जलात्
with five heads from the water
On hearing the blast of the Paanchajanya conch, terrible like the thunder at the end of the Kalpa, the fife headed demon Mura, who was sleeping, arose from the water.
त्रिशूलमुद्यम्य सुदुर्निरीक्षणो युगान्तसूर्यानलरोचिरुल्बण: ।
ग्रसंस्त्रिलोकीमिव पञ्चभिर्मुखैरभ्यद्रवत्तार्क्ष्यसुतं यथोरग: ॥७॥
त्रिशूलम्-उद्यम्य सुदुर्निरीक्षण:
trident upholding, the very difficult to be seen,
युगान्त-सूर्य-अनल-
at the deluge time's Sun, Wind (like)
रोचिर-उल्बण:
brilliant and ferocious
ग्रसन्-त्रिलोकीम्-इव
swallowing the three worlds as though
पञ्चभि:-मुखै:-अभ्यद्रवत्-
with the five mouths, rushed (towards Krishna)
तार्क्ष्य-सुतम् यथा-उरग:
Taarkshya's son, Gaduda, like a serpent
Upholding the trident, he, difficult to be seen because of his brilliance and ferocity of the Sun and Wind of the time of deluge, started devouring the three worlds with his five mouths, just as Taarkshya's son Gaduda would swallow a snake.
आविध्य शूलं तरसा गरुत्मते निरस्य वक्त्रैर्व्यनदत् स पञ्चभि: ।
स रोदसी सर्वदिशोऽन्तरं महानापूरयन्नण्डकटाहमावृणोत ॥८॥
आविध्य शूलम् तरसा
brandishing the trident with force,
गरुत्मते निरस्य वक्त्रै:-
on Gaduda hurling, by the mouths
व्यनदत् स: पञ्चभि:
roared he with five
स: रोदसी सर्व-दिश:-
he, in the sky and earth, all the directions,
अन्तरम् महान्-आपूरयन्-
and in hell, the great (roar) filling
अण्डकटाहम्-आवृणोत
the cosmos covered (with it)
The demon Mura brandishing his trident with force hurled it on Gaduda, and with his five mouths let out a fierce roar, which filled the sky, earth, all the directions, and the hell, and covered the entire cosmos with it.
तदापतद् वै त्रिशिखं गरुत्मते हरि: शराभ्यामभिनत्त्रिधौजसा ।
मुखेषु तं चापि शरैरताडयत् तस्मै गदां सोऽपि रुषा व्यमुञ्चत ॥९॥
तदा-अपतत् वै त्रिशिखम्
then on the falling indeed trident on
गरुत्मते हरि: शराभ्याम्-
Gaduda, Lord Shree Hari with arrows
अभिनत्-त्रिधा-औजसा
broke in three swiftly
मुखेषु तम् च-अपि शरै:-
on the face him and also with arrows
अताडयत् तस्मै गदाम्
hit, him by the mace,
स:-अपि रुषा व्यमुञ्चत
he also enraged struck
Lord Shree Hari, then swiftly hit with arrows the trident which was about to fall on Gaduda, and broke it into three pieces, and also hit him on the face with arrows. He also in anger hurled the mace at Krishna.
तामापतन्तीं गदया गदां मृधे गदाग्रजो निर्बिभिदे सहस्रधा ।
उद्यम्य बाहूनभिधावतोऽजित: शिरांसि चक्रेण जहार लीलया ॥१०॥
ताम्-आपतन्तीम् गदया
that coming, with mace
गदाम् मृधे गद-अग्रज:
the mace, in battle, Gada's elder brother (Krishna)
निर्बिभिदे सहस्रधा
broke into thousands
उद्यम्य बाहून्-अभिधावत:-
outstretching the arms, rushing (towards Him)
अजित: शिरांसि चक्रेण
The Unconquerable, the heads with discus
जहार लीलया
cut off sportingly
In the battle, that approaching mace, The Lord, Gada's elder brother, Krishna, broke into thousands of pieces with a mace. The demon's heads, who was rushing at Krishna with outstretched arms, The Unconquerable, sportingly cut off with the discus.
व्यसु: पपाताम्भसि कृत्तशीर्षो निकृत्तशृङ्गोऽद्रिरिवेन्द्रतेजसा ।
तस्यात्मजा: सप्त पितुर्वधातुरा: प्रतिक्रियामर्षजुष: समुद्यता: ॥११॥
व्यसु: पपात-अम्भसि
life-less, fell in the water,
कृत्त-शीर्ष: निकृत्त-शृङ्ग:-
(with) severed heads, cut away the summits
अद्रि:-इव-इन्द्र-तेजसा
the mountains like by Indra's might
तस्य-आत्मजा: सप्त
his sons seven
पितु:-वध-आतुरा: प्रतिक्रिया-
by father's slaying distressed, in revenge
अमर्ष-जुष: समुद्यता:
anger with prepared
The demon, life-less, with his heads severed, fell in the water, like the mountains peaks' cut off by Indra's might. His seven sons who were distressed by their father's slaying, were enraged, and prepared to give fight in revenge.
ताम्रोऽन्तरिक्ष: श्रवणो विभावसुर्वसुर्नभस्वानरुणश्च सप्तम: ।
पीठं पुरस्कृत्य चमूपतिं मृधे भौमप्रयुक्ता निरगन् धृतायुधा: ॥१२॥
ताम्र:-अन्तरिक्ष: श्रवण:
Taamra, Antariksha, Shravana,
विभावसु:-वसु:-नभस्वान्-
Vibhaavasu, Vasu, Nabhasvaan,
अरुण:-च सप्तम:
Aruna, and the seventh
पीठम् पुरस्कृत्य चमूपतिम्
Peetha placing in the lead, as the army's general,
मृधे भौम-प्रयुक्ता:
in the battle, by Bhauma urged,
निरगन् धृत-आयुधा:
set forth equipped with arms
Urged by Bhaumaasura, Taamra, Antareeksha, Shravana, Vibhaavasu, Vasu, Nabhasvaan, and the seventh Aruna, placed Pitha in the lead as the army's general, and equipped with arms set forth to fight in the battle.
प्रायुञ्जतासाद्य शरानसीन् गदा: शक्त्यृष्टिशूलान्यजिते रुषोल्बणा: ।
तच्छस्त्रकूटं भगवान् स्वमार्गणैरमोघवीर्यस्तिलशश्चकर्त ह ॥१३॥
प्रायुञ्जत-आसाद्य शरान्-
employed, coming up, arrows,
असीन् गदा: शक्ति-ऋष्टि-
swords, maces, juveniles, spears,
शूलानि-अजिते रुषा-उल्बणा:
pikes on Invincible Lord, in rage boiling
तत्-शस्त्र-कूटम् भगवान्
that weapons' hoards, The Lord
स्व-मार्गणै:-अमोघ-वीर्य:-
with His arrows, of unflinching valour,
तिलश:-चकर्त ह
into sesame seeds (like) cut off
Coming up, and boiling in rage, they employed arrows, swords, maces, juveniles, spears, pikes on The Invincible Lord. The Lord of unflinching valour, cut off that hoard of weapons with His own shafts, into sesame seeds like small pieces.
तान् पीठमुख्याननयद् यमक्षयं निकृत्तशीर्षोरुभुजाङ्घ्रिवर्मण: ।
स्वानीकपानच्युतचक्रसायकैस्तथा निरस्तान् नरको धरासुत: ॥१४॥
तान् पीठ-मुख्यान्-अनयत्
them, with Peetha as the leader, took
यम-क्षयम् निकृत्त-शीर्ष-
to Yama's abode, severed heads,
उरु-भुजा-अङ्घ्रि-वर्मण:
thighs, arms, feet, armour,
स्व-अनीकपान्-अच्युत-
own army generals, by The Invincible Lord's
चक्र-सायकै:-तथा निरस्तान्
discus and arrows, like that defeated,
नरक: धरासुत:
Narakaasura, son of Earth,….
They, with Peetha as their leader, were taken to the abode of Yama, with their heads, thighs, arms, feet, armour, severed by The Invincible Lord's discus and arrows. Seeing the generals of his own army thus defeated, Narakaasura, the son of Earth,….
निरीक्ष्य दुर्मर्षण आस्रवन्मदैर्गजै: पयोधिप्रभवैर्निराक्रमत् ।
दृष्ट्वा सभार्यं गरुडोपरि स्थितं सूर्योपरिष्टात् सतडिद्घनं यथा ।
कृष्णं स तस्मै व्यसृजच्छतघ्नीं योधाश्च सर्वे युगपत् स्म विव्यधु: ॥१५॥
निरीक्ष्य दुर्मर्षण: आस्रवत्-
seeing, in great anger, with oozing
मदै:-गजै: पयोधि-
fluid elephants, from the ocean
प्रभवै:-निरक्रमत्
originated, rushed forth,
दृष्ट्वा स-भार्यम् गरुड-उपरि
seeing with wife, Gaduda on
स्थितम् सूर्य-उपरिष्टात्
mounted, Sun above
स-तडित्-घनम् यथा
with lightening cloud like,
कृष्णम् स: तस्मै व्यसृजत्-
Krishna, he, on Him discharged
शतघ्नीम् योधा:-च सर्वे
Shataghnis (missile), the warriors and all
युगपत् स्म विव्यधु:
at once did hit
In great anger, seeing all this he, rushed forth with elephants oozing fluid, and whose origin was from the ocean. Percieving Krishna, with his wife, seated on Gaduda, as though above the Sun was placed a cloud with lightening, he discharged the missile Shataghnis, and the warriors also at once hit at Him.
तद् भौमसैन्यं भगवान् गदाग्रजो विचित्रवाजैर्निशितै: शिलीमुखै: ।
निकृत्तबाहूरुशिरोध्रविग्रहं चकार तर्ह्येव हताश्वकुञ्जरम् ॥१६॥
तत् भौम-सैन्यम् भगवान्
that Bhauma's army, The Lord,
गदा-अग्रज: विचित्र-वाजै:
Gada's Elder Brother, of peculiar winged
निशितै: शिलीमुखै:
sharp arrows
निकृत्त-बाहु-ऊरु शिरोध्र-
cut off the arms, thighs, necks,
विग्रहम् चकार तर्हि-एव
and body, made to, then also
हत-अश्व-कुञ्जरम्
killed the horses and elephants
The Lord, Gada's Elder Brother, on that army of Bhaumaasura, charged sharp arrows with peculiar wings, and cut off their arms, thighs, necks, and body, then also killed the horses and elephants.
यानि योधै प्रयुक्तानि शस्त्रास्त्राणि कुरूद्वह ।
हरिस्तान्यच्छिनत्तीक्ष्णै: शरैरेकैकशस्त्रिभि: ॥१७॥
यानि योधै: प्रयुक्तानि
all those, by the warriors employed
शस्त्र-अस्त्राणि कुरूद्वह
weapons and arms, O Scion of the Kurus'!
हरि:-तानि-अच्छिनत्-
Lord Hari, them cut off
तीक्ष्णै: शरै:-
with sharp arrows,
एक-एकश:-त्रिभि:
each one into three
O Scion of the Kurus'! all those weapons and arms, employed by the warriors, Lord Shree Hari cut them off with sharp arrows, each one into three pieces.
उह्यमान: सुपर्णेन पक्षाभ्यां निघ्नता गजान् ।
गरुत्मता हन्यमानास्तुण्डपक्षनखैर्गजा: ॥१८॥
उह्यमान: सुपर्णेन
borne by Gaduda,
पक्षाभ्याम् निघ्नता गजान्
by his wings, beaten the elephants,
गरुत्मता हन्यमाना:-
by Gaduda's hitting
तुण्ड-पक्ष-नखै:-गजा:
with the beak, wings, nails, the elephants
The Lord, borne by Gaduda, made him hit the elephants with his wings, the elephants were hit by the beak, wings and nails of Gaduda.
पुरमेवाविशन्नार्ता नरको युध्ययुध्यत ।
दृष्ट्वा विद्रावितं सैन्यं गरुडेनार्दितं स्वकम् ॥१९॥
पुरम्-एव-अविशन्-आर्ता:
the city only entered distressed
नरक: युधि-अयुध्यत
Narakaasura in the battle fought
दृष्ट्वा विद्रावितम् सैन्यम्
seeing the fleeing army,
गरुडेन-अर्दितम् स्वकम्
by Gaduda tormented, his own
The distressed elephants entered the city only, for cover, and Narakaasura kept fighting in the battle. Seeing his own army fleeing, being tormented by Gaduda,…
तं भौम प्राहरच्छक्त्या वज्र: प्रतिहतो यत: ।
नाकम्पत तया विद्धो मालाहत इव द्विप: ॥२०॥
तम् भौम प्राहरत्-शक्त्या
him (Gaduda) Bhaumaasura hit by the javelin
वज्र: प्रतिहत: यत:
the thunderbolt was hit by which
न-अकम्पत तया विद्ध:
did not move by that pierced
माला-हत इव द्विप:
by a garland hit like elephant
Bhaumaasura hit Gaduda with that javelin by which the thunderbolt of Indra had been hit. Gaduda, though pierced by it, did not move a bit, just like an elephant hit by a garland.
शूलं भौमोऽच्युतं हन्तुमाददे वितथोद्यम: ।
तद्विसर्गात् पूर्वमेव नरकस्य शिरो हरि: ।
अपाहरद् गजस्थस्य चक्रेण क्षुरनेमिना ॥२१॥
शूलम् भौम:-अच्युतम् हन्तुम्-
the pike, Bhaumaasura The Invincible Lord to kill,
आददे वितथ-उद्यम:
took up, of failed attempt,
तत्-विसर्गात् पूर्वम्-एव
of hurling that, before only
नरकस्य शिर: हरि:
Narakaasura head, Shree Hari
अपाहरत् गज-स्थस्य
severed, mounted on an elephant
चक्रेण क्षुर-नेमिना
by the discus, sharp edged
Bhaumaasura, whose attempt had failed, took up the pike to kill The Invincible Lord. Before he could hurl it, Shree Hari severed his head, who was mounted on an elephant, with a sharp edged discus.
सकुण्डलं चारुकिरीटभूषणं बभौ पृथिव्यां पतितं समुज्ज्वलत् ।
हाहेति साध्वित्यृषय: सुरेश्वरा माल्यैर्मुकुन्दं विकिरन्त ईडिरे ॥२२॥
स-कुण्डलम् चारु-किरीट-
with ear-rings, a beautiful diadem
भूषणम् बभौ पृथिव्याम्
adorned, became on the ground
पतितम् समुज्ज्वलत्
fallen most resplendent
हाहा-इति साधु-इति-
'O! Alas! What a pity! 'Well done!'
ऋषय: सुरेश्वरा: माल्यै:-
thus the sages, the gods with garlands
मुकुन्दम् विकिरन्त: ईडिरे
Mukunda (Krishna) showering extolled
His head, fallen on the ground, looked most resplendent with the ear-rings and a beautiful diadem. His people cried, 'O! Alas! What a pity!, the sages said, "Well done!' and the gods covered Mukunda with flower garlands even as they exalted Him.
ततश्च भू: कृष्णमुपेत्य कुण्डले प्रतप्तजाम्बूनदरत्नभास्वरे ।
सवैजयन्त्या वनमालयार्पयत् प्राचेतसं छत्रमथो महामणिम् ॥२३॥
तत:-च भू: कृष्णम्-उपेत्य
after that, Earth, Krishna approached,
कुण्डले प्रतप्त-जाम्बूनद-
earrings' pair, of molten gold
रत्न-भास्वरे
gems resplendent
स-वैजयन्त्या वन-मालया-
with Vaijayanti, sylvan flowers' garland,
अर्पयत् प्राचेतसम् छत्रम्-
presented, Varuna's umbrella,
अथ: महा-मणिम्
and then, a great gem
After that, Earth approached Krishna and presented to Him, a pair of earrings made of purest gold studded with precious gems, a garland with sylvan flowers and Vaijayanti, Varuna's umbrella, and a most valuable gem.
अस्तौषीदथ विश्वेशं देवी देववरार्चितम् ।
प्राञ्जलि: प्रणता राजन् भक्तिप्रवणया धिया ॥२४॥
अस्तौषीत्-अथ विश्वेशम्
glorified, then, of the universe The Lord,
देवी देव-वर-अर्चितम्
the goddess, by the foremost of gods, worshipped,
प्राञ्जलि: प्रणता राजन्
with joined palms, bowing low, O King!
भक्ति-प्रवणया धिया
with devotion fulfilled mind
O King! The Earth then glorified The Lord of the universe, Who is worshipped by the foremost of the gods, with joined palms, bowing low, and with devotion fulfilled mind.
भूमि:-उवाच -
The Earth said -
नमस्ते देवदेवेश शङ्खचक्रगदाधर ।
भक्तेच्छोपात्तरूपाय परमात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२५॥
नमस्ते देव-देवेश
'I salute to You, The Ruler of the god of gods,
शङ्ख-चक्र-गदाधर
conch, discus, mace Wielder!
भक्त-इच्छा-उपात्त-रूपाय
devotee's wishes (accordingly) taking forms
परम-आत्मन् नम:-अस्तु ते
Supreme Soul! salutations be to You
'I salute to You, The Ruler of the god of gods, O Wielder of conch, discus, and mace, taking forms according to the wishes of the devotees, O Supreme Soul! Salutations be to You.'
नम: पङ्कजनाभाय नम: पङ्कजमालिने ।
नम: पङ्कजनेत्राय नमस्ते पङ्कजाङ्घ्रये ॥२६॥
नम: पङ्कज-नाभाय
I bow to the One with lotus in the navel,
नम: पङ्कज-मालिने
I bow to the One with lotus garland,
नम: पङ्कज-नेत्राय
I bow to the One with lotus like eyes,
नमस्ते पङ्कज-अङ्घ्रये
I bow to You, the One with lotus like feet
I bow to the One with lotus in the navel, I bow to the One wearing a lotus garland , I bow to the One with lotus like eyes, I bow to You, the One with lotus like feet.
नमो भगवते तुभ्यं वासुदेवाय विष्णवे ।
पुरुषायादिबीजाय पूर्णबोधाय ते नम: ॥२७॥
नम: भगवते तुभ्यम्
salutations to The Lord, You,
वासुदेवाय विष्णवे
Vaasudeva, Vishnu,
पुरुषाय-आदि-बीजाय
to The Person, The Primary Seed,
पूर्ण-बोधाय ते नम:
to The Perfect Knowledge, to You salutations
Salutations to You O Lord! To Vishnu Himself, in the form of Vasudeva's son, Vaasudeva, to The Person Who is the Primary seed, to The Perfect Knowledge, salutations to You.
अजाय जनयित्रेऽस्य ब्रह्मणेऽनन्तशक्तये ।
परावरात्मन् भूतात्मन् परमात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते ॥२८॥
अजाय जनयित्रे-अस्य
to The Unborn, Creator of this (universe)
ब्रह्मणे-अनन्त-शक्तये
The Absolute, to The One of endless potencies,
पर-अवर-आत्मन् भूत-आत्मन्
of great and small The Controller, of the elements The One,
परम-आत्मन् नम:-अस्तु ते
The Supreme Spirit, salutations be to You
Salutations be to You The Unborn, The Creator of this universe, The Absolute, The One of endless potencies, The Controller of great and small, The One constitute of the elements, The Supreme Spirit.
त्वं वै सिसृक्षू रज उत्कटं प्रभो तमो निरोधाय बिभर्ष्यसंवृत: ।
स्थानाय सत्त्वं जगतो जगत्पते काल: प्रधानं पुरुषो भवान् पर: ॥२९॥
त्वम् वै सिसृक्षु: रज: उत्कटम्
You, indeed created Raja, the vehement,
प्रभो तम: निरोधाय
O Almighty! Tamas, for destruction,
बिभर्षि-असंवृत:
assume unaffected (by them)
स्थानाय सत्त्वम् जगत:
for sustenance Sattva, of the world,
जगत्-पते काल: प्रधानम्
of the world O Ruler! Time, Prakriti,
पुरुष: भवान् पर:
The Person, You are beyond all
O Almighty! Indeed, You created the vehement Rajas, created Tamas, for the destruction, and for the sustenance of the world O Ruler of the world, You assume Sattva, and are unaffected by them all. You are The Time, The Prakriti, and The Person, yet You are beyond all.
अयं पयो ज्योतिरथानिलो नभो मात्राणि देवा मन इन्द्रियाणि ।
कर्ता महानित्यखिलं चराचरं त्वय्यद्वितीये भगवन्नयं भ्रम: ॥३०॥
अयम् पय: ज्योति:-अथ-अनिल:
this, (myself) water, fire, then wind,
नभ: मात्राणि देवा:
sky, the five senses, the gods,
मन: इन्द्रयाणि
the mind, the ten Indriyas,
कर्ता महान्-इति-अखिलम्
the ego, the Mahat, this entire
चर-अचरम् त्वयि-अद्वितीये
mobile and immobile, in You, without a second,
भगवन्-अयम् भ्रम:
O Lord! this is illusion
This, (myself, the Earth) water, fire, then wind, sky, the five senses, the gods, the mind, the ten Indriyas, the mind, the ten Indriyas, the entire mobile and immobile, is in You, O Lord! This is an illusion.
तस्यात्मजोऽयं तव पादपङ्कजं भीत: प्रपन्नार्तिहरोपसादित: ।
तत् पालयैनं कुरु हस्तपङ्कजं शिरस्यमुष्याखिलकल्मषापहम् ॥३१॥
तस्य-आत्मज:-अयम्
his (Narakaasura) son this,
तव पाद-पङ्कजम् भीत:
of Your feet lotus afraid,
प्रपन्न-आर्ति-हर: उपसादित:
O of the surrendered agony Reliever! Brought
तत् पालय-एनम्
so, protect him
कुरु हस्त-पङ्कजम् शिरसि-
place hand lotus on the head,
अमुष्य-अखिल-कल्मष-अपहम्
his, all sin destroyer
O Lord! Reliever of the agonies of those surrendered to You, I have brought to Your lotus feet, this son of Narakaasura, who is afraid. So do protect him and place your lotus hand, the destroyer of all sins, on his head.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इति भूम्यार्थितो वाग्भिर्भगवान् भक्तिनम्रया ।
दत्त्वाभयं भौमगृहं प्राविशत् सकल-ऋद्धिमत् ॥३२॥
इति भूम्या-अर्थित: वाग्भि:-
thus, by the Earth entreated, with words,
भगवान् भक्ति-नम्रया
The Lord, with devotion soft,
दत्त्वा-अभयम् भौम-गृहम्
granting security, in Bhauma's house
प्राविशत् सकल-ऋद्धिमत्
entered, with all amenities and riches
Thus entreated by Earth, with words softened with devotion, The Lord granted security and entered the house of Bhaumaasura, which had all amenities and riches.
तत्र राजन्यकन्यानां षट्सहस्राधिकायुतम् ।
भौमाहृतानां विक्रम्य राजभ्यो ददृशे हरि: ॥३३॥
तत्र राजन्य-कन्यानाम्
there, Kshatriya maidens,
षट्सहस्र-अधिक-अयुतम्
six thousand more ten thousand
भौम-आहृतानाम् विक्रम्य
by Bhauma kidnapped by valour,
राजभ्य: ददृशे हरि:
from the kings, saw The Lord
There, The Lord saw sixteen thousand and more Kshatriya maidens kidnapped by Bhauma, by his valour, from the kings.
तं प्रविष्टं स्त्रियो वीक्ष्य नरवीरं विमोहिता: ।
मनसा वव्रिरेऽभीष्टं पतिं दैवोपसादितम् ॥३४॥
तम् प्रविष्टम् स्त्रिय: वीक्ष्य
Him entering, the women seeing,
नर-वीरम् विमोहिता:
of the men A Hero, fascinated
मनसा वव्रिरे-अभीष्टम्
mentally wed as the desireable
पतिम् दैव-उपसादितम्
husband by Providence presented
The women seeing Him, A Hero of men, entering, were fascinated and wed Him mentally, as the desired husband, presented by Providence.
भूयात् पतिरयं मह्यं धाता तदनुमोदताम् ।
इति सर्वा: पृथक् कृष्णे भावेन हृदयं दधु: ॥३५॥
भूयात् पति:-अयम् मह्यम्
may husband this be, my,
धाता तत्-अनुमोदताम्
Providence this may approve
इति सर्वा: पृथक् कृष्णे
thus all, individually, in Krishna
भावेन हृदयम् दधु:
with feeling heart gave
They all wished that, 'May He be my husband, and may Providence approve of this'. Thus they individually gave their hearts with feelings to Krishna.
ता: प्राहिणोद् द्वारवतीं सुमृष्टविरजोऽम्बरा: ।
नरयानैर्महाकोशान् रथाश्वान् द्रविणं महत् ॥३६॥
ता: प्राहिणोद् द्वारवतीम्
them sent to Dwaarakaa,
सुमृष्ट-विरज:-अम्बरा:
in beautiful clean clothes,
नरयानै:-महा-कोशान्
by palanquins, great treasuries,
रथ-अश्वान् द्रविणम् महत्
chariots, horses, wealth abundant
Krishna sent them to Dwaarakaa clad in beautiful clean clothes, in palanquins. He also sent valuable treasures, chariots, horses and abundant wealth.
ऐरावतकुलेभांश्च चतुर्दन्तांस्तरस्विन: ।
पाण्डुरांश्च चतु:षष्टिं प्रेषयामास केशव: ॥३७॥
ऐरावत-कुल-इभान्-च
of Airaawata (elephant's) breed elephants and
चतु:-दन्तान्-तरस्विन:
with four tusks of high speed,
पाण्डुरान्-च चतु:षष्टिम्
white and, sixty-four
प्रेषयामास केशव:
sent Keshava
Keshava also sent sixty four white elephants having four tusks, and of high speed, of the breed of Airaawata.
गत्वा सुरेन्द्रभवनं दत्त्वादित्यै च कुण्डले ।
पूजितस्त्रिदशेन्द्रेण सहेन्द्राण्या च सप्रिय: ॥३८॥
गत्वा सुरेन्द्र-भवनम्
going to Indra's abode,
दत्त्वा-अदित्यै च कुण्डले
returning to Aditi and the ear-rings,
पूजित:-त्रिदश-इन्द्रेण
worshipped by the gods' ruler, Indra,
सह-इन्द्राण्या च स-प्रिय:
with (his wife) Indraanee, and with His own beloved
Krishna then went to the abode of Indra and returned the ear-rings to Aditi. Then, He was worshipped by Indra and his wife Indraanee, along with His own beloved wife, Satyabhaamaa.
चोदितो भार्ययोत्पाट्य पारिजातं गरुत्मति ।
आरोप्य सेन्द्रान् विबुधान् निर्जित्योपानयत् पुरम् ॥३९॥
चोदित: भार्यया-उत्पाट्य
entreated by (His) wife, uprooting
पारिजातम् गरुत्मति
the Paarijaata (tree) on Gaduda
आरोप्य स-इन्द्रान् विबुधान्
placing, along with the Indras and gods
निर्जित्य-उपानयत् पुरम्
vanquishing, brought to the city
Krishna, entreated by His wife uprooted the Paarijaata tree, placed it on Gaduda, and brought it to the city of Dwaarakaa, after vanquishing the opposing Indras and the gods.
स्थापित: सत्यभामाया गृहोद्यानोपशोभन: ।
अन्वगुर्भ्रमरा: स्वर्गात् तद्गन्धासवलम्पटा: ॥४०॥

planted in Satybhaama's
गृह-उद्यान-उपशोभन:
mansion garden to beautify
अन्वगु:-भ्रमरा: स्वर्गात्
followed the bumble bees from the heaven
तत्-गन्ध-आसव-लम्पटा:
its' fragrance and nectar greedy of
It was planted in the garden of Satybhaama's mansion, to beautify it. The bumble bees followed it from the heaven, greedy for its fragrance and nectar.
ययाच आनम्य किरीटकोटिभि: पादौ स्पृशन्नच्युतमर्थसाधनम् ।
सिद्धार्थ एतेन विगृह्यते महानहो सुराणां च तमो धिगाढ्यताम् ॥४१॥
ययाच आनम्य किरीट-
begged bowing, with the crown's
कोटिभि: पादौ स्पृशन्-
tips, the feet touching
अच्युतम्-अर्थ-साधनम्
The Invincible Lord, purpose fulfilling
सिद्ध-अर्थ एतेन विगृह्यते
fulfilled purpose, with Him revolts
महान्-अहो-सुराणाम्
great Alas of the gods'
च तमो धिगाढ्यताम्
and ignorance, shame upon opulence
Indra had begged to Krishna, The Fulfiller of purpose, by touching His feet with the ends of his crown, for the fulfilment of his purpose. Once the purpose was fulfilled he revolted with Him. O what ignorance of the gods! Alas! Shame on such opulence.
अथो मुहूर्त एकस्मिन् नानागारेषु ता: स्त्रिय: ।
यथोपयेमे भगवांस्तावद्रूपधरोऽव्यय: ॥४२॥
अथ: मुहूर्ते एकस्मिन्
then, in the time same
नाना-आगारेषु ता: स्त्रिय:
in different houses, those women
यथा-उपयेमे भगवान्-
with due ceremony, The Lord
तावत्-रूप-धर:-अव्यय:
those many forms assuming, The Almighty
The Almighty Lord, then, married with due ceremony, all those women in the same auspicious moment, in different houses, assuming as many forms.
गृहेषु तासामनपाय्यतर्क्यकृन्निरस्तसाम्यातिशयेष्ववस्थित: ।
रेमे रमाभिर्निजकामसंप्लुतो यथेतरो गार्हकमेधिकांश्चरन् ॥४३॥
गृहेषु तासाम्-अतर्क्य-
in houses theirs', of unfathomable
कृत्-निरस्त-साम्य-
deeds, perfect, in sameness
अतिशयेषु-अवस्थित:
unsurpassable present,
रेमे रमाभि:-निज-काम-
sported with the (part incarnations of) Ramaa's, in own bliss
संप्लुत: यथा-इतर:
immersed, just like ordinary
गार्हकम्-एधिकान्-चरन्
householders, mortal performing
The Lord of unfathomable deeds, in their houses, perfect in the unsurpassable sameness, sported with them, the part incarnations of Ramaa, immersed in His own bliss, performing like just an ordinary mortal householder.
इत्थं रमापतिमवाप्य पतिं स्त्रियस्ता ब्रह्मादयोऽपि न विदु: पदवीं यदीयाम् ।
भेजुर्मुदाविरतमेधितयानुरागहासावलोकनवसङ्गमजल्पलज्जा: ॥४४॥
इत्थम् रमा-पतिम्-अवाप्य
in this manner, Ramaa's husband, attaining
पतिम् स्त्रिय:-ता: ब्रह्म-आदय:-
as husband, women they, Brahmaa and others
अपि न विदु: पदवीम् यत्-ईयाम्
also did not know the state, that these (women)
भेजु:-मुदा-अविरतम्-एधितया-
enjoyed, delightfully, incessantly increasing
अनुराग-हास-अवलोकन-
love, laughter, glancing,
नव-सङ्गम-जल्प-लज्जा:
new meetings, conversations, bashfulness
In this manner, those women attained the spouse of Ramaa as their husbands. Even Brahmaa and others did not know of the state enjoyed by them, with incessantly increasing love, laughter, welcoming glances, ever new meetings and conversations and renewed bashfulness.
प्रत्युद्गमासनवरार्हणपादशौचताम्बूलविश्रमणवीजनगन्धमाल्यै: ।
केशप्रसारशयनस्नपनोपहार्यैर्दासीशता अपि विभोर्विदधु: स्म दास्यम् ॥४५॥
प्रत्युद्गम-आसन-वर-अर्हण
welcoming, seat best offering, worshipping,
पाद-शौच-ताम्बूल-विश्रमण-
feet washing, betel leaf relaxing
वीजन-गन्ध-माल्यै:
with fanning, incense, garlands
केश-प्रसार-शयन-स्नपन-
hair combing, sleeping, bathing,
उपहार्यै:-दासी-शता अपि
feeding, maids hundreds even,
विभो:-विदधु: स्म दास्यम्
of The Almighty rendered service
Even though they had hundreds of maids in waiting, they served The Almighty themselves, with welcoming Him, offering the best seat, worshipping Him, washing His feet, offering betel leaf, relieving Him of fatigue with fanning, incenses and garlands, combing His hair, making His bed, bathing, feeding Him with various meals.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशम स्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे पारिजातहरणनरकवधो नाम एकोनषष्टितमोऽध्याय: ॥५९॥
Thus ends the fifty-ninth discourse entitled, 'The Lord snatches away (by force) a Paarijaata tree (from Indra's paradise) and makes short work of Naraka,' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
