श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अयुते द्वे शतान्यष्टौ लीलया युधि निर्जिता: ।

ते निर्गता गिरिद्रोण्यां मलिना मलवासस: ॥१॥


अयुते द्वे शतानि-अष्टौ
thousand two hundred eight,
लीलया युधि निर्जिता:
easily in the battle conquered,
ते निर्गता: गिरिद्रोण्याम्
they came out of the mountain caves,
मलिना: मलवासस:
dirty and soiled clothed

Two thousand and eight hundred of them came out of the mountain caves, dirty and in soiled clothes, who were easily defeated in battle, by Jaraasandha.


क्षुत्क्षामा: शुष्कवदना: संरोधपरिकर्शिता: ।

ददृशुस्ते घनश्यामं पीतकौशेयवाससम् ॥२॥


क्षुत्-क्षामा: शुष्क-वदना:
by hunger weakened, dry faced
संरोध-परिकर्शिता:
being imprisoned, thin,
ददृशु:-ते घनश्यामम्
saw they (Krishna), clouds dark
पीत-कौशेय-वाससम्
yellow silk robed in

They, who were weakened by hunger, their faces were dried, being imprisoned, they had lost weight, saw the dark cloud complexioned Krishna clad in yellow silk.


श्रीवत्साङ्कं चतुर्बाहुं पद्मगर्भारुणेक्षणम् ।

चारुप्रसन्नवदनं स्फुरन्मकरकुण्डलम् ॥३॥


श्रीवत्स-अङ्कम् चतु:-बाहुम्
with Shree Vatsa mark, four armed,
पद्म-गर्भ-अरुण-ईक्षणम्
lotus inside like red eyes,
चारु-प्रसन्न-वदनम्
pleasant happy face
स्फुरत्-मकर-कुण्डलम्
shining alligator ear-rings

They saw Him with the Shree Vatsa mark, with four arms, with eyes red like the inside of the lotus, having a pleasant and happy face, wearing alligator shaped shining ear-rings.


पद्महस्तं गदाशङ्खरथाङ्गैरुपलक्षितम् ।

किरीटहार कटककटिसूत्राङ्गदाचितम् ॥४॥


पद्म-हस्तम् गदा-शङ्ख-
lotus in hand, mace conch,
रथाङ्गै:-उपलक्षितम्
and discus, was seen,
किरीट-हार कटक-
with crown, necklace, bracelets,
कटिसूत्र-अङ्गद-आचितम्
girdle, armlets wearing

He was seen with a lotus in hand and mace, conch and discus in the other hands, wearing a crown, necklace, bracelets, girdle, and armlets.


भ्राजद्वरमणिग्रीवं निवीतं वनमालया ।

पिबन्त इव चक्षुर्भ्यां लिहन्त इव जिह्वया ॥५॥


भ्राजत्-वर-मणि-ग्रीवम्
adorned with excellent Kaustubha Mani, in the neck
निवीतम् वन-मालया
hanging sylvan flower garland,
पिबन्त: इव चक्षुभ्याम्
drinking as if by the eyes,
लिहन्त: इव जिह्वया
licking as if by the tongue,

They saw Him adorned with an excellent shining Kaustubha gem, a garland of sylvan flowers hanging in His neck. They as if drank Him with the eyes and licked Him with the tongue.


जिघ्रन्तं इव नासाभ्यां रम्भन्त इव बाहुभि: ।

प्रणेमुर्हतपाप्मानो मूर्धभि: पादयोर्हरे: ॥६॥


जिघ्रन्तम् इव नासाभ्याम्
smelling as if by the noses,
रम्भन्त इव बाहुभि:
embracing as if with the arms,
प्रणेमु:-हत-पाप्मान:
bowed, rid of all sins,
मूर्धभि: पादयो:-हरे:
with the heads on the feet of Shree Hari

They were, as if smelling Him by their noses, and embracing Him with their arms. They were rid of all their sins as they bowed their heads at the feet of Shree Hari.


कृष्णसन्दर्शनाह्लादध्वस्तसंरोधनक्लमा: ।

प्रशशंसुर्हृषीकेशं गीर्भि: प्राञ्जलयो नृपा:॥७॥


कृष्ण-सन्दर्शन-आह्लाद-
by Krishna's sight joy
ध्वस्त-संरोधन-क्लमा:
shattered the confinement fatigue,
प्रशशंसु:-हृषीकेशम् गीर्भि:
praised Hrishikesha, with words
प्राञ्जलय: नृपा:
joined palms the kings

The kings were full of joy at the sight of Krishna, and all their fatigue of confinement was wiped off. With joined palms they praised Hrishikesha, in the following words,….


राजान: ऊचु: -
The kings said -
नमस्ते देवदेवेश प्रपन्नार्तिहराव्यय ।

प्रपन्नान् पाहि न: कृष्ण निर्विण्णान् घोरसंसृते: ॥८॥


नमस्ते देव-देवेश
salutations to You, O Lord of the gods!
प्रपन्न-आर्तिहर-अव्यय
of the surrendered sorrows Remover! Imperishable!
प्रपन्नान् पाहि न: कृष्ण
the surrendered us, protect, O Krishna!
निर्विण्णान् घोर-संसृते:
suffering from the horrors of transmigration

O Lord of the gods! O Remover of the sorrows of the surrendered! O Imperishable Lord! Salutations to You. O Krishna! Protect us, the surrendered, from the horrors of transmigration.


नैनं नाथान्वसूयामो मागधं मधुसूदन ।

अनुग्रहो यद् भवतो राज्ञां राज्यच्युतिर्विभो ॥९॥


न-एनम् नाथ-अन्वसूयाम:
not this, O Master! a blame
मागधम् मधुसूदन
the Magadha king, O Madhusoodana!
अनुग्रह: यत् भवत: राज्ञाम्
obligation in that Yours on the kings,
राज्य-च्युति:-विभो
from the kingdom usurped, O All mighty!

O Master! This is not a blame on the Magadha king. O Madhusoodana! This is an obligation of Yours, on the kings that they were usurped from the kingdom, O Almighty Lord!


राज्यैश्वर्यमदोन्नद्धो न श्रेयो विन्दते नृप: ।

त्वन्मायामोहितोऽनित्या मन्यते सम्पदोऽचला: ॥१०॥


राज्य-ऐश्वर्य-मद-उन्नद्ध:
with the royal power intoxicated, arrogant,
न श्रेय: विन्दते नृप:
not good fortune attains a king
त्वत्-माया-मोहित:-अनित्या
by Your Maayaa deluded, as impermanent
मन्यते सम्पद:-अचला:
regards the worldly wealth as permanent

A king does not attain good fortune, as he is arrogant and intoxicated by the royal powers. Moreover, deluded by Your Maya, he considers the impermanent worldly wealth to be permanent.


मृगतृष्णां यथा बाला मन्यन्त उदकाशयम् ।

एवं वैकारिकीं मायामयुक्ता वस्तु चक्षते ॥११॥


मृगतृष्णाम् यथा बाला:
mirage, just as the ignorant
मन्यन्ते उदक्-आशयम्
consider water body
एवम् वैकारिकीम् मायाम्-
like that the ever changing Maayaa
अयुक्ता: वस्तु चक्षते
the unwise, the sense materials consider

Just as an ignorant person considers a mirage to be a body of water, like that, an unwise person understands the sense materials, of the ever changing Maaya.


वयं पुरा श्रीमदनष्टदृष्टयो जिगीषयास्या इतरेतरस्पृध: ।

घ्नन्त: प्रजा: स्वा अतिनिर्घृणा: प्रभो मृत्युं परस्त्वाविगणय्य दुर्मदा: ॥१२॥


वयम् पुरा श्री-मद-नष्ट-दृष्टय:
we, once, by wealth and power, blinded sights,
जिगीषया-अस्या:
wanting to conquered this (earth)
इतर-इतर-स्पृध:
with each other competed
घ्नन्त: प्रजा: स्वा:
killing people own,
अति-निर्घृणा: प्रभो
very mercilessly, O Almighty Lord!
मृत्युम् पुर:-त्वा-अविगणय्य दुर्मदा:
death, in front, You, ignoring were deluded

O Almighty Lord! At one time, we, intoxicated and blinded by wealth and power, in our lust for conquering this earth, competed with each other, mercilessly killing our own people, unaware of You standing in front as Death itself.


त एव कृष्णाद्य गभीररंहसा दुरन्तवीर्येण विचालिता: श्रिय: ।

कालेन तन्वा भवतोऽनुकम्पया विनष्टदर्पाश्चरणौ स्मराम ते ॥१३॥


ते एव कृष्ण-अद्य
those only (we) O Krishna! Today,
गभीर-रंहसा दुरन्त-वीर्येण
with grave speed, unfathomable potency,
विचालिता: श्रिय:
deprived of wealth,
कालेन तन्वा भवत:-
by Time's strands, by Your
अनुकम्पया विनष्ट-दर्पा:-
grace, with destroyed arrogance,
चरणौ स्मराम ते
feet contemplate on Your

O Krishna! Today, the very same we, who have been deprived of wealth and power by the grave speed and of unfathomable potency, Time, and by Your grace, have our arrogance destroyed. We now contemplate on Your feet.


अथो न राज्यं मृगतृष्णिरूपितं देहेन शश्वत् पतता रुजां भुवा ।

उपासितव्यं स्पृहयामहे विभो क्रियाफलं प्रेत्य च कर्णरोचनम् ॥१४॥


अथ: न राज्यम् मृगतृष्णि-
now, not the kingdom, mirage
रूपितम् देहेन शश्वत्
like, by the body incessantly
पतता रुजाम् भुवा
decaying, of ailments the ground,
उपासितव्यम् स्पृहयामहे विभो
to be enjoyed , seek O Almighty Lord!
क्रिया-फलम् प्रेत्य च
of actions the results, attained after death, and,
कर्ण-रोचनम्
for the ears pleasing

O Almighty Lord! Now we do not covet the mirage like kingdom which is to be enjoyed by the incessantly decaying body, the ground of ailments, nor do we seek the results of the actions which are attained after death, and are only pleasing to the ear.


तं न: समादिशोपायं येन ते चरणाब्जयो: ।

स्मृतिर्यथा न विरमेदपि संसरतामिह ॥१५॥


तम् न: समादिश-उपायम्
to that us, instruct the way
येन ते चरण-अब्जयो:
by which Your feet lotus
स्मृति:-यथा न विरमेत्-
memory so that does not halt,
अपि संसरताम्-इह
even when going through birth and death, here

To such us, do instruct the way by which the memory of Your lotus feet is not lost to us, even while we are going through the cycle of birth and death, here.


कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय हरये परमात्मने ।

प्रणत क्लेशनाशाय गोविन्दाय नमो नम: ॥१६॥


कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय
for Krishna, Vaasudeva,
हरये परमात्मने
Shree Hari, The Supreme Soul,
प्रणत क्लेशनाशाय
those who bow to You, their sin Destroyer
गोविन्दाय नम: नम:
for Govinda, salutations, salutations

Our salutations for Krishna, Vaasudeva, Shree Hari, The Supreme Soul, The Destroyer of the sins of those who bow to You, salutations for Govinda.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
संस्तूयमानो भगवान् राजभिर्मुक्तबन्धनै: ।

तानाह करुणस्तात शरण्य: श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥१७॥


संस्तूयमान: भगवान्
glorified The Lord
राजभि:-मुक्त-बन्धनै:
by the kings released from captivity,
तान्-आह करुण:-तात
to them said, The Compassionate, O Dear!
शरण्य: श्लक्ष्णया गिरा
The shelter Giver, in a sweet voice

O Dear Pareekshit! Thus the kings who were released from captivity glorified The Compassionate Lord. He, The shelter Giver told to them in a sweet voice,…


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
अद्यप्रभृति वो भूपा मय्यात्मन्यखिलेश्वरे ।

सुदृढा जायते भक्तिर्बाढमाशंसितं तथा ॥१८॥


अद्य-प्रभृति व: भूपा:
today from, of you O Kings!
मयि-आत्मनि-अखिल-ईश्वरे
in Me The Soul of all The Lord,
सुदृढा जायते भक्ति:-
steady will become devotion
बाढम्-आशंसितम् तथा
as well desired, such

O Kings! From today onwards, steady devotion for Me, The Soul and Lord of the universe, will develop in you, the same as such desired by you.


दिष्ट्या व्यवसितं भूपा भवन्त ऋतभाषिण: ।

श्रियैश्वर्यमदोन्नाहं पश्य उन्मादकं नृणाम् ॥१९॥


दिष्ट्या व्यवसितम् भूपा:
fortunately well resolved O Kings!
भवन्त: ऋत-भाषिण
you all are truth speaking
श्रिया-ऐश्वर्य-मद-उन्नाहम्
by wealth, and power intoxication increases,
पश्य उन्मादकं नृणाम्
see, maddening is for people

O Kings! Fortunately, you have resolved well. And you say the truth when you observe that the intoxication of excess wealth and power make people mad.


हैहयो नहुषो वेनो रावणो नरकोऽपरे ।

श्रीमदाद् भ्रंशिता: स्थानाद् देवदैत्यनरेश्वरा: ॥२०॥


हैहय: नहुष: वेन:
Haihaya, Nahusha, Vena,
रावण: नरक:-अपरे
Raavana, Naraka and others
श्रीमदात् भ्रंशिता: स्थानात्
by the wealth intoxication fell from the position
देव-दैत्य-नर-ईश्वरा:
of gods, demons, human beings, the lords

Haihaya, Nahusha, Vena, Raavana, Naraka and others, the lords of gods, demons, human beings, fell from their positions being intoxicated by wealth.


भवन्त एतत् विज्ञाय देहाद्युत्पाद्यमन्तवत् ।

मां यजन्तोऽध्वरैर्युक्ता: प्रजा धर्मेण रक्षथ ॥२१॥


भवन्त: एतत् विज्ञाय
you all this know
देह-आदि-उत्पाद्यम्-अन्त-वत्
body and other things are to birth death subject
माम् यजन्त:-अध्वरै:-
Me worship by sacrifices
युक्ता: प्रजा: धर्मेण रक्षथ
performing, the public righteously protect

Know that the body and things connected to it are subject to birth and death. You all worship Me by performing sacrifices, and protect your public righteously.


सन्तवन्त: प्रजातन्तून् सुखं दु:खं भवाभवौ ।

प्राप्तं प्राप्तं च सेवन्तो मच्चित्ता: विचरिष्यथ ॥२२॥


सन्तवन्त: प्रजा-तन्तून्
increasing the family line,
सुखम् दु:खम् भव-अभवौ
pleasure and pain, birth and death,
प्राप्तम् प्राप्तम् च सेवन्त:
getting whatever experiencing
मत्-चित्ता: विचरिष्यथ
in Me devoted minded live in the world

Increase the family line, experiencing whatever comes your way, pleasure and pain, birth and death, with your mind devoted in Me, live in the world.


उदासीनाश्च देहादावात्मारामा धृतव्रता: ।

मय्यावेश्य मन: सम्यङ् मामन्ते ब्रह्म यास्यथ ॥२३॥


उदासीना:-च देह-आदौ-
indifferent and to body and others,
आत्मारामा: धृत-व्रता:
in self rejoicing, holding on to vows,
मयि-आवेश्य मन: सम्यङ्
in Me fixing the mind properly
माम्-अन्ते ब्रह्म यास्यथ
Me, in the end, The Brahman will go to

Remaining indifferent to body and other things, rejoicing in the self, observing the vows, with your minds properly fixed in Me, in the end, you will attain Me, The Supreme Soul, Brahman.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यादिश्य नृपान् कृष्णो भगवान् भुवनेश्वर: ।

तेषां न्ययुङ्क्त पुरुषान् स्त्रियो मज्जनकर्मणि ॥२४॥


इति-आदिश्य नृपान् कृष्ण:
thus directing the kings, Krishna,
भगवान् भुवन-ईश्वर:
The Almighty, of the universe The Lord
तेषाम् न्ययुङ्क्त पुरुषान्
for them appointed men
स्त्रिय: मज्जन-कर्मणि
and women in bath giving work

Krishna, thus instructed the kings, and The Almighty Lord of the universe appointed men and women in the work of giving them bath.


सपर्यां कारयामास सहदेवेन भारत ।

नरदेवोचितैर्वस्त्रैर्भूषणै: स्रग्विलेपनै: ॥२५॥


सपर्याम् कारयामास
honour got to do
सहदेवेन भारत
by Sahadeva, O Pareekshit!
नरदेव-उचितै:-वस्त्रै:-
to a king becoming, with clothes,
भूषणै: स्रक्-विलेपनै:
ornaments, garlands and sandal paste

O Pareekshit! He then made Sahadeva to do honours to them, worthy for kings, with clothes, ornaments, garlands and sandal paste.


भोजयित्वा वरान्नेन सुस्नातान् समलङ्कृतान् ।

भोगैश्च विविधैर्युक्तांस्ताम्बूलाद्यैर्नृपोचितै: ॥२६॥


भोजयित्वा वर-अन्नेन
feeding with the best food,
सुस्नातान् सम-अलङ्कृतान्
well bathed and adorned,
भोगै:-च विविधै:-युक्तान्-
with article and various arranged,
ताम्बूल-आद्यै:-नृप-उचितै:
betel leaves and others, for kings proper

They, the well bathed and adorned, were then made to dine with the best of foods, and entertained with various articles, such as betel leaves and others, proper for kings.


ते पूजिता मुकुन्देन राजानो मृष्टकुण्डला: ।

विरेजुर्मोचिता: क्लेशात् प्रावृडन्ते यथा ग्रहा: ॥२७॥


ते पूजिता: मुकुन्देन
they were honoured by Krishna,
राजान: मृष्ट-कुण्डला:
the kings with shining ear-rings,
विरेजु:-मोचिता: क्लेशात्
shone released from suffering,
प्रावृड्-अन्ते यथा ग्रहा:
at rainy season's end like the stars

They, the kings, were honoured by Shree Krishna, who shone with their earrings, and released from sufferings, shone like the stars at the end of the rainy season.


रथान् सदश्वानारोप्य मणिकाञ्चनभूषितान् ।

प्रीणय्य सूनृतैर्वाक्यै: स्वदेशान् प्रत्ययापयत् ॥२८॥


रथान् सत्-अश्वान्-आरोप्य
on chariots, with good horses, mounting,
मणि-काञ्चन-भूषितान्
with gems and gold adorned,
प्रीणय्य सूनृतै:-वाक्यै:
cheering with sweet talks,
स्व-देशान् प्रत्यय-आपयत्
to own lands back sent

He got them mounted on chariots drawn by good horses, adorned with gems and gold. Cheering them with sweet talks, sent them back to their own lands.


त एवं मोचिता: कृच्छ्रात् कृष्णेन सुमहात्मना ।

ययुस्तमेव ध्यायन्त: कृतानि च जगत्पते: ॥२९॥


ते एवम् मोचिता: कृच्छ्रात्
they, thus released from sufferings
कृष्णेन सुमहात्मना
by Krishna, The good noble soul,
ययु:-तम्-एव ध्यायन्त:
attained Him only contemplating on,
कृतानि च जगत्पते:
the deeds and of The Lord of the universe

They, were thus released from sufferings by Krishna, The good noble soul. They went on contemplating upon virtuous deeds of the Lord of the universe, and attained Him only.


जगदु: प्रकृतिभ्यस्ते महापुरुषचेष्टितम् ।

यथान्वशासद् भगवांस्तथा चक्रुरतन्द्रिता: ॥३०॥


जगदु: प्रकृतिभ्य:-ते
spoke to the citizens, they,
महापुरुष चेष्टितम्
of The High Soul's deeds,
यथा-अन्वशासत् भगवान्-
as instructed The Lord,
तथा चक्रु:-अतन्द्रिता:
in that manner, lived, diligently

They related the deeds of The High Souled Lord to the subjects, and they led their lives diligently as Krishna had instructed.


जरासन्धं घातयित्वा भीमसेनेन केशव: ।

पार्थाभ्यां संयुत: प्रायात् सहदेवेन पूजित: ॥३१॥


जरासन्धम् घातयित्वा
Jaraasandha getting killed
भीमसेनेन केशव:
by Bheemasena, Keshava,
पार्थाभ्याम् संयुत: प्रायात्
the two Paandavas with went away
सहदेवेन पूजित:
by Sahadeva honoured

After getting Jaraasandha killed by Bheemasena, and duly honoured by Sahadeva, Jaraasandha's son, Keshava went away along with the two Paandavas.


गत्वा ते खाण्डवप्रस्थं शङ्खान् दध्मुर्जितारय: ।

हर्षयन्त: स्वसुहृदो दुर्हृदां चासुखावहा: ॥३२॥


गत्वा ते खाण्डवप्रस्थम्
reaching, they to Khaandavaprastha,
शङ्खान् दध्मु:-जित-अरय:
the conchs blew, conquerors of enemies,
हर्षयन्त: स्व-सुहृद:
giving joy to their friends,
दुर्हृदान् च-असुख-आवहा:
to the enemies and sorrow bringing

On reaching Khaandavaprastha, and having conquered the enemies, they blew their own conchs, giving joy to their friends, and bringing sorrow to the enemies.


तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रीतमनस इन्द्रप्रस्थनिवासिन: ।

मेनिरे मागधं शान्तं राजा चाप्तमनोरथ: ॥३३॥


तत्-श्रुत्वा प्रीत-मनस:
that hearing, the happy minded
इन्द्रप्रस्थ-निवासिन:
Indraprastha residents
मेनिरे मागधम् शान्तम्
concluded Jaraasandha to be killed,
राजा च-आप्त-मनोरथ:
and the king having fulfilled his desire

The residents of Indraprastha were happy in the mind on hearing the conch sound, concluding that Jaraasandha was killed and that king Yudhishthira had his purpose fulfilled.


अभिवन्द्याथ राजानं भीमार्जुनजनार्दना: ।

सर्वमाश्रावयाञ्चक्रुरात्मना यदनुष्ठितम् ॥३४॥


अभिवन्द्य-अथ राजानम्
greeting then the king,
भीम-अर्जुन-जनार्दना:
Bheema, Arjuna and Krishna,
सर्वम्-आश्रावयाञ्चक्रु:-
all related
आत्मना यत्-अनुष्ठितम्
by them all that was done

Bheema, Arjuna and Krishna, then greeted the king and related to Him all that they had done.


निशम्य धर्मराजस्तत् केशवेनानुकम्पितम् ।

आनन्दाश्रुकलान् मुञ्चन् प्रेम्णा नोवाच किञ्चन ॥३५॥


निशम्य धर्मराज:-तत्
hearing Yudhishthira, that,
केशवेन-अनुकम्पितम्
by Keshava's compassionate grace,
आनन्द-अश्रु-कलान् मुञ्चन्
joyful tears shed,
प्रेम्णा न-उवाच किञ्चन
with love did not say anything

On hearing that, and by the compassionate grace and love of Keshava, Yudhishthira was so overwhelmed with emotion, that he shed tears in joy and could not say anything.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे कृष्णाद्यागमने त्रिसप्ततितम: अध्याय: ॥७३॥


Thus ends the seventy-third discourse, bearing on the return of Shree Krishna and others (to Indraprastha), in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
