श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं युधिष्ठिरो राजा जरासन्धवधं विभो: ।

कृष्णस्य चानुभावं तं श्रुत्वा प्रीतस्तमब्रवीत् ॥१॥


एवम् युधिष्ठिर: राजा
thus, Yudhishthira, the king,
जरासन्ध-वधम् विभो:
Jaraasandha's death, of The Almighty
कृष्णस्य-च-अनुभावम्
Krishna's and glory
तम् श्रुत्वा प्रीत:-तम्-अब्रवीत्
that hearing, delighted, to Him said

The king Yudhishthira thus heard of the death of Jaraasandha and of the glory of The Almighty Shree Krishna, and was delighted, and said to Him,…..


युधिष्ठिर उवाच -
Yudhishthira said -
ये स्युस्त्रैलोक्यगुरव: सर्वे लोकमहेश्वरा: ।

वहन्ति दुर्लभं लब्ध्वा शिरसैवानुशासनम् ॥२॥


ये स्यु:-त्रैलोक्य-गुरव:
they, who are of the three worlds the preceptors,
सर्वे लोक-महेश्वरा:
all of the world's guardians,
वहन्ति दुर्लभम् लब्ध्वा
carry out, the rare (to get) getting
शिरसा-एव-अनुशासनम्
with bowed heads, only, the command

They who are the preceptors of the three worlds, Brahmaa, Vishnu and Shiva, and all of the guardians of the worlds, Indra and others, carry out, Your Commands, which are rare to be got, with their heads bowed.


स भवानरविन्दाक्षो दीनानामीशमानिनाम् ।

धत्तेऽनुशासनं भूमंस्तदत्यन्तविडम्बनम् ॥३॥


स: भवान्-अरविन्द-अक्ष:
That You, O Lotus-eyed
दीनानाम्-ईश-मानिनाम्
of the down trodden, lords considering ourselves,
धत्ते-अनुशासनम् भूमन्-
carry out commands, O Infinite Lord!
तत्-अत्यन्त-विडम्बनम्
that is a big fallacy

O Lotus-eyed Infinite Lord! That You, of us the down trodden, considering ourselves lords, carry out the commands, this indeed is a big fallacy.


न ह्येकस्याद्वितीयस्य ब्रह्मण: परमात्मन: ।

कर्मभिर्वर्धते तेजो ह्रसते च यथा रवे: ॥४॥


न हि-एकस्य-अद्वितीयस्य
not indeed of The One, without a second,
ब्रह्मण: परमात्मन:
Brahman, The Supreme Spirit,
कर्मभि:-वर्धते तेज:
by the deeds increases the brilliance,
ह्रसते च यथा रवे:
decreases and just like the Sun's

Indeed, just like that of the Sun, the brilliance of The One, without a second, The Brahman, The Supreme Spirit, does not increases or decrease by His deeds.


न वै तेऽजित भक्तानां ममाहमिति माधव ।

त्वं तवेति च नानाधी: पशूनामिव वैकृता ॥५॥


न वै ते-अजित भक्तानाम्
not, certainly, Your, O Unconquerable Lord! of devotees
मम-अहम्-इति माधव
(is) mine and I, such concept, O Maadhava!
त्वम् तव-इति च नाना-धी:
you, your's this and various thoughts
पशूनाम्-इव वैकृता
of animal's like distorted

O Unconquerable Lord! In Your devotees, the concept of 'mine and I' is certainly not there. O Maadhava! The various discriminating thoughts, like, 'you and your's', are distorted and quite animal like.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्युक्त्वा यज्ञिये काले वव्रे युक्तान् स ऋत्विज: ।

कृष्णानुमोदित: पार्थो ब्राह्मणान् ब्रहमवादिन: ॥६॥


इति-उक्त्वा यज्ञिये काले
thus saying, at the sacrifice time,
वव्रे युक्तान् स: ऋत्विज:
appointed adapt he, the official priests,
कृष्ण-अनुमोदित: पार्थ:
with Krishna's permission Yudhishthira,
ब्राह्मणान् ब्रहम-वादिन:
the Braahmanas in Vedas experts

Saying so, Yudhishthira, at the time of the sacrifice, with the permission of Krishna, appointed Braahmanas, the official priests, adapt in performing sacrifices, and experts in the Vedas.


द्वैपायनो भरद्वाज: सुमन्तुर्गौतमोऽसित: ।

वसिष्ठश्च्यवन: कण्वो मैत्रेय: कवषस्त्रित: ॥७॥


द्वैपायन: भरद्वाज:
Dwaipaayana, Bharadvaaja,
सुमन्तु:-गौतम:-असित:
Sumantu, Gautama, Asita,
वसिष्ठ:-च्यवन: कण्व:
Vashishtha, Chyavana, Kanva,
मैत्रेय: कवष:-त्रित:
Maitreya, Kavasha, Trita

Dwaipaayana, Bharadvaaja, Sumantu, Gautama, Asita, Vashishtha, Chyavana, Kanva, Maitreya, Kavasha, Trita,…..


विश्वामित्रो वामदेव: सुमतिर्जैमिनि: क्रतु: ।

पैल: पराशरो गर्गो वैशम्पायन एव च ॥८॥


विश्वामित्र: वामदेव:
Vishwaamitra, Vaamadeva,
सुमति:-जैमिनि: क्रतु:
Sumati, Jaimini, Kratu,
पैल: पराशर: गर्ग:
Paila, Paraashara, Garga,
वैशम्पायन: एव च
Vaishampaayana, also and

Vishwaamitra, Vaamadeva, Sumati, Jaimini, Kratu, Paila, Paraashara, Garga, Vaishampaayana, also and were appointed.


अथर्वा कश्यपो धौम्यो रामो भार्गव आसुरि: ।

वीतिहोत्रो मधुच्छन्दा वीरसेनोऽकृतव्रण: ॥९॥


अथर्वा कश्यप: धौम्य:
Atharva, Kashyapa, Dhaumya,
राम: भार्गव: आसुरि:
Parashuraama, Bhaargava, Aasuri,
वीतिहोत्र: मधुच्छन्दा
Veetihotra, Madhuchanda,
वीरसेन:-अकृतव्रण:
Viersen, Akritavrana,

Atharva, Kashyapa, Dhaumya, Parashuraama, Bhaargava, Aasuri, Veetihotra, Madhuchanda, Veerasena, Akritavrana,…..


उपहूतास्तथा चान्ये द्रोणभीष्मकृपादय: ।

धृतराष्ट्र: सहसुतो विदुरश्च महामति: ॥१०॥


उपहूता:-तथा च-अन्ये
invited, also and others,
द्रोण-भीष्म-कृप-आदय:
Drona, Bheeshma, Kripa, and others
धृतराष्ट्र: सह-सुत:
Dhritaraashtra, with sons,
विदुर:-च महा-मति:
Vidura, and the very wise

Others were also invited, Drona, Bheeshma, Kripa, and others such as, Dhritaraashtra, with sons, and the very wise Vidura.


ब्राह्मणा: क्षत्रिया वैश्या: शूद्रा यज्ञदिदृक्षव: ।

तत्रेयु: सर्वराजानो राज्ञां प्रकृतयो नृप ॥११॥


ब्राह्मणा: क्षत्रिया: वैश्या:
Braahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas,
शूद्रा: यज्ञ-दिदृक्षव:
Shudras, the sacrifice wanting to watch,
तत्र-ईयु: सर्व-राजान:
there came, all the kings,
राज्ञाम् प्रकृतय: नृप
and the kings' subjects, O King!

O King! There came all the kings, and their subjects, the people who wanted to watch the sacrifice, and the Braahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras.


ततस्ते देवयजनं ब्राह्मणा: स्वर्णलाङ्गलै:।

कृष्ट्वा तत्र यथाम्नायं दीक्षयाञ्चक्रिरे नृपम् ॥१२॥


तत:-ते देव-यजनम्
then, they the sacrificial ground
ब्राह्मणा: स्वर्ण-लाङ्गलै:
the Braahmanas, with golden ploughs
कृष्ट्वा तत्र यथा-आम्नायम्
ploughed, there, accordingly reciting,
दीक्षयान्-चक्रिरे नृपम्
initiation performed of the king

They the Braahmanas, then, on the sacrificial ground ploughed with golden ploughs and reciting the Vedas accordingly, performed the initiation of the king for sacrifice.


हैमा: किलोपकरणा वरुणस्य यथा पुरा ।

इन्द्रादयो लोकपाला विरिञ्चभवसंयुता: ॥१३॥


हैमा: किल-उपकरणा:
golden surely were the utensils,
वरुणस्य यथा पुरा
in that of Varuna, in ancient times
इन्द्र-आदय: लोकपाला:
Indra and other guardians
विरिञ्च-भव-संयुता:
Brahmaa, Shankara, including,

Like in the sacrifice of Varuna, in ancient times, the utensils were surely golden. Indra and other guardians, Brahmaa, Shankara, including,…


सगणा: सिद्धगन्धर्वा विद्याधरमहोरगा: ।

मुनयो यक्षरक्षांसि खगकिन्नरचारणा: ॥१४॥


स-गणा: सिद्ध-गन्धर्वा:
with the Ganas, the Siddhas, and Gandharvas,
विद्याधर-महोरगा:
Vidyaadharas, the great Naagas,
मुनय: यक्ष-रक्षांसि
the sages, Yakshas, Raakshasas,
खग-किन्नर-चारणा:
birds, Kinnaras, Chaaranas,

The Siddhas, and Gandharvas, with the Ganas (attendents), Vidyaadharas, the great Naagas, the sages, Yakshas, Raakshasas, birds, Kinnaras, Chaaranas,…….


राजानश्च समाहूता राजपत्न्यश्च सर्वश: ।

राजसूयं समीयु: स्म राज्ञ: पाण्डुसुतस्य वै ॥१५॥


राजान:-च समाहूता:
the kings and were invited,
राजपत्न्य:-च सर्वश:
the queens and from everywhere,
राजसूयम् समीयु: स्म
to the Raajasooya, came together,
राज्ञ: पाण्डु-सुतस्य वै
of the king, Paandu's son, indeed

The kings and queens were invited from everywhere. They came together to attend the Raajasooya of the king Yudhishthira, the son of Paandu.


मेनिरे कृष्णभक्तस्य सूपपन्नमविस्मिता: ।

अयाजयन् महाराजं याजका देववर्चस: ।

राजसूयेन विधिवत् प्राचेतसमिवामरा: ॥१६॥


मेनिरे कृष्ण-भक्तस्य
admitted, of Krishna's devotee,
सु-उपपन्नम्-अविस्मिता:
well conducted, unhesitatingly
अयाजयन् महाराजम्
conducted by the great king
याजका: देववर्चस:
the official priests by Vedic norms
राजसूयेन विधिवत्
by Raajasooya, systematically,
प्राचेतसम्-इव-अमरा:
by Varuna like the gods

Everyone unhesitatingly admitted that Krishna's devotee's sacrifice is well conducted. The officiating priests got the Raajasooya sacrifice performed by the great king systematically according to the Vedic norms, like the gods had done for Varuna.


सौत्येऽहन्यवनीपालो याजकान् सदसस्पतीन् ।

अपूजयन् महाभागान् यथावत् सुसमाहित: ॥१७॥


सौत्ये-अहनि-अवनीपाल:
on soma extracting day, the king
याजकान् सदसस्पतीन्
the officiating priests and the supervisors
अपूजयत् महाभागान्
worshipped the highly blessed,
यथावत् सुसमाहित:
accordingly, with great respect

On the Soma extracting day, the king honoured with great respect, accordingly worshipped, the highly blessed officiating priests and the supervisors.


सदस्याग्र्यार्हणार्हं वै विमृशन्त: सभासद: ।

नाध्यगच्छन्ननैकन्त्यात् सहदेवस्तदाब्रवीत् ॥१८॥


सदस्य-अग्र्य-अर्हण-अर्हम्
of the assembly the first place deserving person
वै विमृशन्त: सभासद:
indeed considering, the members,
न-अध्यगच्छन्-अनैकन्त्यात्
did not decide for unanimity
सहदेव:-तदा-अब्रवीत्
Sahadeva then said

Among the members of the assembly, on considering the person worthy of the highest honour, no decision was taken, for want of unanimity. Then, Sahadeva said,…


अर्हति ह्यच्युत: श्रैष्ठ्यं भगवान् सात्वतां पति: ।

एष वै देवता: सर्वा देशकालधनादय: ॥१९॥


अर्हति हि-अच्युत: श्रैष्ठ्यम्
deserves surely The Infinite, the highest honour,
भगवान् सात्वताम् पति:
Lord, of the Yadus the jewel
एष: वै देवता: सर्वा:
This, He, indeed is the gods all
देश-काल-धन-आदय:
Time, Space, Wealth, and Everything

Surely, The Infinite Lord, The Jewel of the Yadus, deserves the highest honour, as He alone indeed, is all the gods, Time, Space, Wealth, and Everything.


यदात्मकमिदं विश्वं क्रतवश्च यदात्मका: ।

अग्निराहुतयो मन्त्रा: सांख्यं योगश्च यत्पर: ॥२०॥


यत्-आत्मकम्-इदम् विश्वम्
Whose Self is this universe,
क्रतव:-च यत्-आत्मका:
the sacrifices and Whose Self,
अग्नि:-आहुतय: मन्त्रा:
the fire, the oblations, the Mantras,
सांख्यम् योग:-च यत्-पर:
system of Saankhya, Yoga and, Whose manifestations

This universe is Whose very Self, and the sacrifices, the fire, the oblations and the Mantras are Whose very Self, the systems of philosophy of Saankhya and of Yoga are indeed also His manifestations.


एक एवाद्वितीयोऽसावैतदात्म्यमिदं जगत् ।

आत्मनाऽऽत्माश्रय: सभ्या: सृजत्यवति हन्त्यज: ॥२१॥


एक एव-अद्वितीय:-असौ-एतत्-
One, Absolute, without a second, This, He
आत्म्यम्-इदम् जगत्
embodies this universe,
आत्मना-आत्म-आश्रय: सभ्या:
by Himself in Himself dependent, O learned Members,
सृजति-अवति हन्ति-अज:
creates, protects and destroys, The Unborn

O learned Members of the assembly! This He, The Absolute One, without a second, The Unborn, embodies the universe by Himself, dependent on Himself, creates this universe, protects and destroys it.


विविधानीह कर्माणि जनयन यदवेक्षया ।

ईहते यदयं सर्व: श्रेयो धर्मादिलक्षणम् ॥२२॥


विविधानि-इह कर्माणि
various, here, acts
जनयन यत्-अवेक्षया
generating, by Whose grace,
ईहते यत्-अयम् सर्व: श्रेय:
performs, in that, this, all, the favourable
धर्म-आदि-लक्षणम्
Dharma and other objects

By Whose grace, this whole world, here, in this world, performs the various favourable acts of Dharma, Artha, Kaama, Moksha.


तस्मात् कृष्णाय महते दीयतां परमार्हणम् ।

एवं चेत् सर्वभूतानामात्मनश्चार्हणं भवेत् ॥२३॥


तस्मात् कृष्णाय महते
therefore to Krishna, The glorious,
दीयताम् परम-अर्हणम्
offer the highest honour,
एवम् चेत् सर्व-भूतानाम्-
so that, of all the beings,
आत्मन:-च-अर्हणम् भवेत्
of oneself also honour will be

Therefore offer the highest honour to The glorious Krishna, by honouring Him, all the beings and we, ourselves, will be honoured.


सर्वभूतात्मताय कृष्णायानन्यदर्शिने ।

देयं शान्ताय पूर्णाय दत्तस्यानन्त्यमिच्छता ॥२४॥


सर्व-भूत-आत्मताय
to, of all the beings The Self
कृष्णाय-अनन्य-दर्शिने
to Krishna, to The One Who views all as Himself,
देयम् शान्ताय पूर्णाय
should be given, to The Peaceful, Absolute,
दत्तस्य-अनन्त्यम्-इच्छता
of the given gift, infinity seeking

He who seeks to his gifts to be infinite, should gift them to Krishna, The Self of all beings, The One Who views all as Himself, and is The Peaceful and The Absolute.


इत्युक्त्वा सहदेवोऽभूत् तूष्णीं कृष्णानुभाववित् ।

तच्छ्रुत्वा तुष्टुवु: सर्वे साधु साध्विति सत्तमा: ॥२५॥


इति-उक्त्वा सहदेव:-अभूत्
so saying, Sahadeva became
तूष्णीम् कृष्ण-अनुभाव-वित्
quiet, Krishna's glory the knower
तत्-श्रुत्वा तुष्टुवु: सर्वे
that hearing, were satisfied all
साधु साधु-इति सत्तमा:
'well said! well said!' thus, the noble people

Having said so, Sahadeva, the knower of Krishna's glory, became quiet. Everyone was satisfied to hear this. And the noble people applauded saying, 'Well said, well said!'


श्रुत्वा द्विजेरितं राजा ज्ञात्वा हार्दं सभासदाम् ।

समर्हयद्धृषीकेशं प्रीत: प्रणयविह्वल: ॥२६॥


श्रुत्वा द्विज-ईरितम् राजा
hearing the words of the Braahmana, the king,
ज्ञात्वा हार्दम् सभासदाम्
knowing the wish of the assembly members,
समर्हयत्-हृषीकेशम्
very well worshipped, Krishna, (The sense Controller)
प्रीत: प्रणय-विह्वल:
delighted and overwhelmed with love

King Yudhishthira, on hearing the words of the Braahmana, and ascertaining the wishes of the members of the assembly, was delighted and overwhelmed with love, as he very nicely worshipped Krishna, The Controller of the senses.


तत्पादाववनिज्याप: शिरसा लोकपावनी: ।

सभार्य: सानुजामात्य: सकुटुम्बोऽवहन्मुदा ॥२७॥


तत्-पादौ-अवनिज्य-
His two feet having washed,
आप: शिरसा लोक-पावनी:
the water on the head, the world purifying
स-भार्य: स-अनुज-आमात्य:
along with his wife, brothers, and ministers,
स-कुटुम्ब:-अवहत्-मुदा
and with the family carried with pleasure

He, having washed Krishna's both the feet, bore the world purifying water on the head, along with his wife, brothers, ministers, and other members of the family, with great pleasure.


वासोभि: पीतकौशेयैर्भूषणैश्च महाधनै: ।

अर्हयित्वाश्रुपूर्णाक्षो नाशकत् समवेक्षितुम् ॥२८॥


वासोभि: पीत-कौशेयै:-
with clothes, yellow silken,
भूषणै:-च महा-धनै:
ornaments and very valuable,
अर्हयित्वा-अश्रुपूर्ण-अक्ष:
presenting, with tear filled eyes,
न-अशकत् समवेक्षितुम्
was not able to see (The Lord)

Having presented to Him yellow silken garments, and very valuable ornaments, Yudhishthira, with his tears filled eyes, could not see the form of The Lord.


इत्थं सभाजितं वीक्ष्य सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो जना: ।

नमो जयेति नेमुस्तं निपेतु: पुष्पवृष्टय: ॥२९॥


इत्थम् सभाजितम् वीक्ष्य
in this manner, well worshipped, Him, seeing,
सर्वे: प्राञ्जलय: जना:
all with joined palms, the people,
नम: जय-इति नेमु:-तम्
'Namo Namah' 'Jaya, jaya' thus, saluted to Him,
निपेतु: पुष्प-वृष्टय:
showered and flower rains

All the people, seeing Him thus well worshipped, saluted Him with joined palms and uttered, 'Namo Namah' 'Jaya jaya' thus, and rains of flowers showered on Him.


इत्थं निशम्य दमघोषसुत: स्वपीठादुत्थाय कृष्णगुणवर्णनजातमन्यु: ।

उत्क्षिप्य बाहुमिदमाह सदस्यमर्षी संश्रावयन् भगवते परुषाण्यभीत: ॥३०॥


इत्थम् निशम्य दमघोष-सुत:
thus, hearing, Shishupaala (Damaghosha's son)
स्व-पीठात्-उत्थाय
from his seat getting up
कृष्ण-गुण-वर्णन-जात-मन्यु:
by Krishna excellences being described, being jealous,
उत्क्षिप्य बाहुम्-इदम्-आह
throwing out his arms, this said,
सदसि-अमर्षी संश्रावयन्
in the meeting, in indignation, in the hearing
भगवते परुषाणि-अभीत:
of The Lord, harsh words, fearlessly

Thus hearing the excellences of Shree Krishna being described, Shishupaala, got up from his seat, and put up his arms, and becoming jealous, in the meeting, in the hearing of The Lord, in indignation fearlessly spoke harsh words.


ईशो दुरत्यय: काल इति सत्यवती श्रुति: ।

वृद्धानामपि यद् बुद्धिर्बालवाक्यैर्विभिद्यते ॥३१॥


ईश: दुरत्यय: काल:
The Lord is unsurpassable, is Time itself,
इति सत्यवती श्रुति:
thus, is the truth of the scriptures,
वृद्धानाम्-अपि यत् बुद्धि:-
of the elders also because, the wisdom
बाल-वाक्यै:-विभिद्यते
by the foolish prattle, is misled

It is the Truth of the scriptures that The Lord is Time itself, because, at this time, even the wisdom of the elders is misled by the prattle of the foolish person.


यूयं पात्रविदां श्रेष्ठा मा मन्ध्वं बालभाषितम् ।

सदसस्पतय: सर्वे कृष्णो यत् सम्मतोऽर्हणे ॥३२॥


यूयम् पात्र-विदाम् श्रेष्ठा:
you all, of candidate proper to know are experts
मा मन्ध्वम् बाल-भाषितम्
do not agree to the foolish prattle,
सदसस्पतय: सर्वे
O Members of the meeting all!
कृष्ण: यत् सम्मत:-अर्हणे
Krishna, that, is worthy of the honour

O Members of the meeting! You all are experts in judging the worthy candidate. Do not agree to the foolish prattle of Sahadeva, that Krishna is worthy of the honour.


तपोविद्याव्रतधरान् ज्ञानविध्वस्तकल्मषान् ।

परमर्षीन् ब्रह्मनिष्ठान् लोकपालैश्च पूजितान् ॥३३॥


तप:-विद्या-व्रत-धरान्
by austerities, learning, vows observing,
ज्ञान-विध्वस्त-कल्मषान्
by wisdom sins destroyers,
परम-ऋषीन् ब्रह्म-निष्ठान्
the great sages, in Brahman established,
लोक-पालैश्च पूजितान्
by the quarter guardians worshipped,

Those who have by austerities, learning, observing vows, by wisdom have destroyed the sins, the great sages, and those who are established in Brahman, and are worshipped by the guardians of the quarters,…..


सदस्यपतीनतिक्रम्य गोपाल: कुलपांसन: ।

यथा काक: पुरोडाशं सपर्यां कथमर्हति ॥३४॥


सदस्य-पतीन्-अतिक्रम्य
the members of the meeting, ignoring,
गोपाल: कुल-पांसन:
a cowherd, to the clan a disgrace,
यथा काक: पुरोडाशम्
like a crow, of an oblation,
सपर्याम् कथम्-अर्हति
the honour how deserves

Ignoring the worthy members of the meeting, how can a cowherd, a disgrace to the clan deserve the highest honour, like how can a crow be worthy to receive a sacrificial oblation?


वर्णाश्रमकुलापेत: सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृत: ।

स्वैर्वर्ती गुणैर्हीन: सपर्यां कथमर्हति ॥३५॥


वर्ण-आश्रम-कुल-अपेत:
of Varna, Aashrama, clan, devoid,
सर्व-धर्म-बहिष्कृत:
of all the religions beyond,
स्वै:-वर्ती गुणै:-हीन:
own fanciful will following, of virtues devoid,
सपर्याम् कथम्-अर्हति
the highest honour how deserves?

He is devoid of Varna, Aashrama clan and all virtues, is beyond all sacred laws, fancifully follows His own will, how does He deserve the highest honour?


ययातिनैषां हि कुलं शप्तं सद्भिर्बहिष्कृतम् ।

वृथापानरतं शश्वत् सपर्यां कथमर्हति ॥३६॥


ययातिना-एषाम् हि कुलम्
by Yayaati, their indeed clan
शप्तम् सद्भि:-बहिष्कृतम्
was cursed, by the noble is boycotted
वृथा-पानरतम् शश्वत्
needlessly in drinking are involved always,
सपर्याम् कथम्-अर्हति
the highest honour how deserves

His clan indeed is under the curse of Yayaati, and is boycotted by the nobles, they are always needlessly drinking , how can He deserve the highest honour?


ब्रह्मर्षिसेवितान् देशान् हित्वैतेऽब्रह्मवर्चसम् ।

समुद्रं दुर्गमाश्रित्य बाधन्ते दस्यव: प्रजा: ॥३७॥


ब्रह्मर्षि-सेवितान् देशान्
by the divine sages unhabitated places,
हित्वा-एते-अब्रह्मवर्चसम्
abandoning, they devoid of Veda knowing Braahmanas
समुद्रम् दुर्गम्-आश्रित्य
in the sea fort taking shelter,
बाधन्ते दस्यव: प्रजा:
harass pirates like the people

They have abandoned the sacred places unhabitated by the divine sages, and have taken shelter in the fort in the sea which is devoid of Veda knowing Braahmanas, and harass the people like the pirates.


एवमादीन्यभद्राणि बभाषे नष्टमङ्गल: ।

नोवाच किञ्चिद् भगवान् यथा सिंह: शिवारुतम् ॥३८॥


एवम्-आदीनि-अभद्राणि
such and other harsh words
बभाषे नष्ट-मङ्गल:
spoke,(he, whose) exhausted were all merits
न-उवाच किञ्चित् भगवान्
did not say anything The Lord,
यथा सिंह: शिव-आरुतम्
just as a lion to jackal's howls

Shishupaala, whose merits were exhausted, spoke such and similar harsh words, but The Lord did not say anything in response, just as the lion does not heed the howls of the jackal.


भगवन्निन्दनं श्रुत्वा दु:सहं तत् सभासद: ।

कर्णौ पिधाय निर्जग्मु: शपन्तश्चेदिपं रुषा ॥३९॥


भगवत्-निन्दनम् श्रुत्वा
Lord's defaming hearing
दु:सहम् तत् सभासद:
unbearable, that, the assembly members
कर्णौ पिधाय निर्जग्मु:
ears closed went out
शपन्त:-चेदिपम् रुषा
cursing the Chedi king, enraged

The members of the assembly could not bear to hear the defaming words spoken for The Lord. They closed their ears and went out enraged, cursing the Chedi king Shishupaala.


निन्दां भगवत: शृण्वंस्तत्परस्य जनस्य वा ।

ततो नापैति य: सोऽपि यात्यध: सुकृताच्च्युत: ॥४०॥


निन्दाम् भगवत: शृण्वन्-
defaming of The Lord hearing,
तत्-परस्य जनस्य वा
His devotee people or
तत: न-अपैति य: स:-अपि
from there does not move away who, he also
याति-अध: सुकृतात्-च्युत:
goes for a fall, from merits robbed

He who hears the defaming words used for The Lord or even for His devotees, and does not get away from there, heads for a fall and is robbed of his merits.


तत: पाण्डुसुता: क्रुद्धा मत्स्यकैकयसृञ्जया: ।

उदायुधा: समुत्तस्थु: शिशुपालजिघांसव: ॥४१॥


तत: पाण्डु-सुता: क्रुद्धा:
then, the Paandavas, enraged,
मत्स्य-कैकय-सृञ्जया:
the Matsya, Kaikeyas, and Srinjayas,
उत्-आयुधा: समुत्तस्थु:
taking up arms stood up
शिशुपाल-जिघांसव:
Shishupaala to kill wanting

Then, the enraged Paandavas, Matsya, Kaikeyas, and Srinjayas, taking up arms stood up, wanting to kill Shishupaala.


ततश्चैद्यस्त्वसम्भ्रान्तो जगृहे खड्गचर्मणी ।

भर्त्सयन् कृष्णपक्षीयान् राज्ञ: सदसि भारत ॥४२॥


तत:-चैद्य:-तु-असम्भ्रान्त:
then, the Chedi king, indeed, undaunted,
जगृहे खड्ग-चर्मणी
took up the sword and shield
भर्त्सयन् कृष्ण-पक्षीयान्
rebuking Krishna's allies
राज्ञ: सदसि भारत
in the kings assembly, O Pareekshit!

O Pareekshit! then, the undaunted Chedi king, indeed, took up the sword and the shield, and rebuked the allies of Shree Krishna in the assembly of the kings.


तावदुत्थाय भगवान् स्वान् निवार्य स्वयं रुषा ।

शिर: क्षुरान्तचक्रेण जहारापततो रिपो: ॥४३॥


तावत्-उत्थाय भगवान्
just then, getting up, The Lord
स्वान् निवार्य स्वयम् रुषा
own people deterring, Himself in anger
शिर: क्षुरान्त-चक्रेण
the head with the sharp edged discus
जहार-आपतत: रिपो:
sheered of the attacking enemy

Just then, The Lord deterred His own people, Himself stood up and in anger, with the sharp edged discus, cut off the head of the enemy.


शब्द: कोलाहलोऽप्यासीत् शिशुपाले हते महान् ।

तस्यानुयायिनो भूपा दुद्रुवुर्जीवितैषिण: ॥४४॥


शब्द: कोलाहल:-अपि-आसीत्
Uproar and commotion also was there,
शिशुपाले हते महान्
on Shishupaala being killed, great,
तस्य-अनुयायिन: भूपा:
his follower kings
दुद्रुवु:-जीवित-ऐषिण:
fled, lives saving

There was a great uproar and commotion on Shishupaala being killed. His follower kings fled, eager to save their lives.


चैद्यदेहोत्थितं ज्योतिर्वासुदेवमुपाविशत् ।

पश्यतां सर्वभूतानामुल्केव खाच्च्युता ॥४५॥


चैद्य-देह-उत्थितम् ज्योति:-
from Shishupaala body arose light
वासुदेवम्-उपाविशत्
in Vaasudeva entered
पश्यताम् सर्व-भूतानाम्-
as looked on all the beings
उल्का-इव खात्-च्युता
meteor like from the sky fallen

From the body of Shishupaala a light arose and entered Vaasudeva, and merged in Him, even as all the beings looked on, just as a meteor falls from the sky and merges in the earth.


जन्मत्रयानुगुणितवैरसंरब्धया धिया ।

ध्यायंस्तन्मयतां यातो भावो हि भवकारणम् ॥४६॥


जन्म-त्रय-अनुगुणित-
births three increased
वैर-संरब्धया धिया
animosity, obsessed minded,
ध्यायन्-तन्मयताम् यात:
thinking, in Himself went
भाव: हि भव-कारणम्
the thought, indeed, is the birth's cause

In three births he had nurtured animosity towards The Lord. Thinking of Him constantly, and his mind obsessed by Him, he merged in Him. The thought indeed, is the cause of future birth.


ऋत्विग्भ्य: ससदस्येभ्यो दक्षिणां विपुलामदात् ।

सर्वान् सम्पूज्य विधिवच्चक्रेऽवभृथमेकराट् ॥४७॥


ऋत्विग्भ्य: स-सदस्येभ्य:
to the presiding priests, with the assembly members,
दक्षिणाम् विपुलाम्-अदात्
sacrificial fees liberal gave
सर्वान् सम्पूज्य विधिवत्-
to all honour, with the system prescribed,
चक्रे-अवभृथम्-एकराट्
performed the completion ceremony, the emperor

The emperor Yudhishthira, then, liberally gave the sacrificial fees to the presiding priests and the attending members, and honoured all who were present. Then, he performed, according to the system prescribed, the completion ceremony.


साधयितुं क्रतुं राज्ञ: कृष्णो योगेश्वरेश्वर: ।

उवास कतिचिन्मासान् सुहृद्भिरभियाचित: ॥४८॥


साधयितुम् क्रतुम् राज्ञ:
for getting the sacrifice conducted of the king
कृष्ण: योगेश्वर-ईश्वर:
Krishna, of the Yoga masters, The Lord,
उवास कतिचित्-मासान्
stayed back for some months,
सुहृद्भि:-अभियाचित:
by the friends requested

Krishna, The Lord of the Yoga masters, stayed back for some months, as requested by the friends, and got concluded the sacrifice of the king.


ततोऽनुज्ञाप्य राजानमनिच्छन्तमपीश्वर: ।

ययौ सभार्य: सामात्य स्वपुरं देवकीसुत: ॥४९॥


तत:-अनुज्ञाप्य राजानम्-
then taking permission of the king,
अनिच्छन्तम्-अपि-ईश्वर:
reluctantly, though, the Lord
ययौ स-भार्य: स-आमात्य
went with His wife, and with the minister,
स्व-पुरम् देवकी-सुत:
to own city, Devaki's son

Then, The Lord, Devaki's son, Krishna took the permission of the king and though reluctantly went away to His own city with His wife and the minister.


वर्णितं तदुपाख्यानं मया ते बहुविस्तरं ।

वैकुण्ठवासिनोर्जन्म विप्रशापात् पुन: पुन: ॥५०॥


वर्णितम् तत्-उपाख्यानम्
is described that tale
मया ते बहु-विस्तरम्
by Me to you, in great detail
वैकुण्ठ-वासिन:-जन्म
of them, in paradise dwelling, birth,
विप्र-शापात् पुन: पुन:
due to a Braahmana's curse, again and again

The tale of how the two residents of the paradise, had to take birth again and again, due to a Braahmana's curse, has already been narrated by Me to you, in great detail.


राजसूयावभृथ्येन स्नातो राजा युधिष्ठिर: ।

ब्रह्मक्षत्रसभामध्ये शुशुभे सुरराडिव ॥५१॥


राजसूय-अवभृथ्येन
on the Raajasooya conclusion,
स्नात: राजा युधिष्ठिर:
the bathed king Yudhishthira
ब्रह्म-क्षत्र-सभा-मध्ये
in the Braahmana's and Kshatriya's assembly midst
शुशुभे सुर-राट्-इव
shone of the gods' king (Indra) like

Having taken bath and having concluded the Raajasooya sacrifice, king Yudhishthira shone like the king of the gods', Indra, in the midst of the assembly of the Braahmanas and the Kshatriyas.


राज्ञा सभाजिता: सर्वे सुरमानवखेचरा: ।

कृष्णं क्रतुं च शंसन्त: स्वधामानि ययुर्मुदा ॥५२॥


राज्ञा सभाजिता: सर्वे
by the king honoured, all
सुर-मानव-खेचरा:
the gods, men and ethereal beings
कृष्णम् क्रतुम् च शंसन्त:
Krishna and the sacrifice praising,
स्व-धामानि ययु:-मुदा
to own abodes returned happily

All the gods, men and the ethereal beings, honoured by the king, praising Krishna and the sacrifice, returned to their own abodes happily.


दुर्योधनमृते पापं कलिं कुरुकुलामयम् ।

यो न सेहे श्रियं स्फीतां दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुतस्य ताम् ॥५३॥


दुर्योधनम्-ऋते पापम्
Duryodhana except, the curse
कलिम् कुरु-कुल-आमयम्
of the Kali yuga, of the Kuru clan a disease
य: न सेहे श्रियम् स्फीताम्
who did not bear the splendour spreading,
दृष्ट्वा पाण्डु-सुतस्य ताम्
the sight of the Paandu's son that

Except Duryodhana, the curse of the Kali Yuga and cancer to the clan of the Kurus, who did not bear the sight of the spreading of the splendour of the son of Paandu, Yudhishthira.


य इदं कीर्तयेद् विष्णो: कर्म चैद्यवधादिकम् ।

राजमोक्षं वितानं च सर्वपापै: प्रमुच्यते ॥५४॥


य: इदम् कीर्तयेदत् विष्णो:
who so ever, sings of Vishnu's
कर्म चैद्य-वध-आदिकम्
sport, of Shishupaala destruction, and Jaraasandha's,
राज-मोक्षम् वितानम् च
the kings' release, the sacrifice and
सर्व-पापै: प्रमुच्यते
of all the sins is freed

Who so ever sings of the sports of Vishnu, Krishna, such as the destruction of Shishupaala and Jaraasandha, the release of the kings and the conducting of the sacrifice, is freed of all sins.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे शिशुपालवध: नाम चतु:सप्ततितम: अध्याय: ॥७४॥


Thus ends the seventy-fourth discourse entitled 'Shishupaala killed (by Shree Krishna),' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
