श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
स तू उपस्पृश्य सलिलं दंशितो धृतकार्मुक: ।

नय मां द्युमत: पार्श्वं वीरस्येत्याह सारथिम् ॥१॥


स: तु उपस्पृश्य सलिलम्
he, then washed face and hands with water,
दंशित: धृत-कार्मुक:
wore the armour, took the bow,
नय माम् द्युमत: पार्श्वम्
'Take me to Dyumaan near to
वीरस्य-इति-आह सारथिम्
the warrior', this said to the charioteer

He, then washed his face and hands with water, put on his armour and taking up the bow, said to the charioteer, 'Take me near to the warrior Dyumaan,' thus.


विधमन्तं स्वसैन्यानि द्युमन्तं रुक्मिणीसुत: ।

प्रतिहत्य प्रत्यविध्यन्नाराचैरष्टभि: स्मयन् ॥२॥


विधमन्तम् स्व-सैन्यानि
trampled own army
द्युमन्तम् रुक्मिणी-सुत:
Dyumanta, Rukmini's son,
प्रतिहत्य प्रत्यविध्यत्-
taking into account, in return pierced
नाराचै:-अष्टभि: स्मयन्
with arrows eight smilingly

Rukmini's son Pradyumna saw his army trampled at the hands of Dyumanta, taking that into account, he smilingly pierced him in return, with eight arrows.


चतुर्भिश्चतुरो वाहान् सूतमेकेन चाहनत् ।

द्वाभ्यां धनुश्च केतुं च शरेणान्येन वै शिर: ॥३॥


चतुर्भि:-चतुर: वाहान्
with four the four horses,
सूतम्-एकेन च-अहनत्
the charioteer with one, and hit,
द्वाभ्याम् धनु:-च केतुम् च
with the two, the bow and the banner,
शरेण-अन्येन वै शिर:
with the arrow another indeed the head

With four arrows, Pradyumna struck the four horses, with one the charioteer, with two he hit the bow and tore off the banner, and with the other, he cut off his head.


गदसात्यकिसाम्बाद्या जघ्नु: शौभपतेर्बलम् ।

पेतु: समुद्रे सौभेया: सर्वे संछिन्नकन्धरा: ॥४॥


गद-सात्यकि-साम्ब-आद्या:
Gada, Saatyaki, Saamba, and others
जघ्नु: शौभ-पते:-बलम्
killed Saubha master's army
पेतु: समुद्रे सौभेया:
fell in the ocean the Saubha inmates,
सर्वे संछिन्न-कन्धरा:
all severed necks,

Gada, Saatyaki, Saamba, and others were killed of the army of the master of Saubha. The inmates of Saubha fell into the sea, all, with their necks severed.


एवं यदूनां शाल्वानां निघ्नतामितरेतरम् ।

युद्धं त्रिणवरात्रं तदभूत्तुमुलमुल्बणम् ॥५॥


एवम् यदूनाम् शाल्वानाम्
in this manner, of the Yadus and the Shaalva's'
निघ्नताम्-इतर-इतरम्
killing one another,
युद्धम् त्रि-नव-रात्रम्
battle for three (times) nine nights
तत्-अभूत्-तुमुलम्-उल्बणम्
that took place, fierce heated

In this manner the Yadus and the Shaalva's kept killing one another and a fierce and heated battle continued between them for three times nine, twenty seven nights (days).


इन्द्रप्रस्थं गत: कृष्ण आहूतो धर्मसूनुना ।

राजसूयेऽथ निर्वृत्ते शिशुपाले च संस्थिते ॥६॥


इन्द्रप्रस्थम् गत: कृष्ण:
to Indraprastha had gone Krishna
आहूत: धर्मसूनुना
invited by Dharma's son (Yudhishthira)
राजसूये-अथ निर्वृत्ते
Raajasooya, then completed,
शिशुपाले च संस्थिते
Shishupaala and being killed

Krishna had gone to Indraprastha, on Yudhishthira invitation. The Raajasooya sacrifice was over and Shishupaala had been killed.


कुरुवृद्धाननुज्ञाप्य मुनींश्च ससुतां पृथाम् ।

निमित्तान्यतिघोराणि पश्यन् द्वारवतीं ययौ ॥७॥


कुरु-वृद्धान्-अनुज्ञाप्य
the Kuru elders, taking leave of
मुनीन्-च स-सुताम् पृथाम्
the sages and along with the sons Kunti,
निमित्तानि-अति-घोराणि
omen very fearful
पश्यन् द्वारवतीम् ययौ
seeing, to Dwaarakaa went

Krishna took leave of the elders of the Kurus, the sages, Paandavas, and Kunti. He saw fearful bad omens, and proceeded to Dwaarakaa.


आह चाहमिहायात आर्यमिश्राभिसङ्गत: ।

राजन्याश्चैद्यपक्षीया नूनं हन्यु: पुरीं मम ॥८॥


आह च-अहम्-इह-आयात:
said and 'I here have come,
आर्य-मिश्र-अभिसङ्गत:
respected brother with,
राजन्या:-चैद्य-पक्षीया:
the kings, of Chaidya side,
नूनम् हन्यु: पुरीम् मम
certainly have attacked city mine

And He said,' I have come here with my respected elder brother. The kings on Cahidya's side, certainly have attacked My city.'


वीक्ष्य तत् कदनं स्वानां निरूप्य पुररक्षणम् ।

सौभं च शाल्वराजं च दारुकं प्राह केशव: ॥९॥


वीक्ष्य तत् कदनम् स्वानाम्
seeing that plight of own people,
निरूप्य पुर-रक्षणम्
appointed (Balaraama) for the city's protection
सौभम् च शाल्व-राजम्
Saubha and Shaalva king
च दारुकम् प्राह केशव:
and to Daaruka said Keshava

Observing the plight of His own people, appointed Balaraama in the protection of the city, and seeing the Saubha and the king Shaalva, said to Daaruka,….


रथं प्रापय मे सूत शाल्वस्यान्तिकमाशु वै ।

सम्भ्रमस्ते न कर्तव्यो मायावी सौभराडयम् ॥१०॥


रथम् प्रापय मे सूत
chariot bring My, O Charioteer!
शाल्वस्य-अन्तिकम्-आशु वै
of Shaalva's near, soon, indeed,
सम्भ्रम:-ते न कर्तव्य:
surprise you may not do
मायावी सौभराट्-अयम्
magical Saubha's king this (is)

" O Charioteer! Bring My chariot in the proximity of Shaalva, soon. Do not be surprised, Saubha's owner this, knows magic."


इत्युक्तश्चोदयामास रथमास्थाय दारुक: ।

विशन्तं ददृशु: सर्वे स्वे परे चारुणानुजम् ॥११॥


इति-उक्त:-चोदयामास
so told, drove,
रथम्-आस्थाय दारुक:
the chariot, mounting it, Daaruka,
विशन्तम् ददृशु: सर्वे:
entering, saw all
स्वे परे च-अरुण-अनुजम्
own and the enemy's, by the Gaduda (emblem)

So told, Daaruka mounted the chariot and drove it towards the battle field. As it entered, all the warriors, own and the enemy's recognized Him by the emblem of Gaduda on the banner.


शाल्वश्च कृष्णमालोक्य हतप्रायबलेश्वर: ।

प्राहरत् कृष्णसूताय शक्तिं भीमरवां मृधे ॥१२॥


शाल्व:-च कृष्णम्-आलोक्य
Shaalva and Krishna seeing,
हत-प्राय-बल-ईश्वर:
destroyed almost army's master,
प्राहरत् कृष्ण-सूताय
discharged for Krishna's charioteer
शक्तिम् भीम-रवाम् मृधे
missile loud sounding in the battle

On seeing Krishna, in the battle, Shaalva, the master of the almost destroyed army, discharged a loud sounding missile on Krishna's charioteer.


तामापतन्तीं नभसि महोल्कामिव रंहसा ।

भासयन्तीं दिश: शौरि: सायकै: शतधाच्छिनत् ॥१३॥


ताम्-आपतन्तीम् नभसि
that falling in the sky,
महा-उल्काम्-इव रंहसा
a huge meteor like in speed,
भासयन्तीम् दिश: शौरि:
drowning the directions, Krishna
सायकै: शतधा-अच्छिनत्
with arrows, in hundreds, broke

In great speed it rushed through the sky like a great meteor, drowning the directions with its illumination. Krishna broke that into a hundred pieces, with His arrows.


तं च षोडशभिर्विद्ध्वा बाणै: सौभं च खे भ्रमत् ।

अविध्यच्छरसन्दोहै: खं सूर्य इव रश्मिभि: ॥१४॥


तं च षोडशभि:-विद्ध्वा
him (Shaalva) and with sixteen piercing
बाणै: सौभम् च खे भ्रमत्
with arrows, Saubha and in the sky wheeling
अविध्यत्-शर-सन्दोहै:
pierced with arrow volleys,
खम् सूर्य इव रश्मिभि:
the sky by Sun's like rays

He pierced that Shaalva with sixteen arrows, and the areal car wheeling in the sky with a volley of arrows, like the Sun's rays pierces the sky.


शाल्व: शौरेस्तु दो: सव्यं सशार्ङ्गं शार्ङ्गधन्वन: ।

बिभेद न्यपतद्हस्तात् शार्ङ्गमासीत्तदद्भुतम् ॥१५॥


शाल्व: शौरे:-तु दो: सव्यम्
Shaalva, of The Shauree (Krishna) indeed, two arms,
स-शार्ङ्गम् शार्ङ्गधन्वन:
the left, with Shaaranga (bow), of Shaaranga bow wielder,
बिभेद न्यपतत्-हस्तात्
struck, fell from the hand
शार्ङ्गम्-आसीत्-तत्-अद्भुतम्
Shaaranga, was that strange

Shaalva, indeed struck the left of the two arms, holding the Shaaranga bow, of The Shaaranga bow wielder, Krishna. The Shaaranga bow fell from His hand, that was strange, indeed.


हाहाकारो महानासीद् भूतानां तत्र पश्यताम् ।

विनद्य सौभराडुच्चैरिदमाह जनार्दनम् ॥१६॥


हाहाकार: महान्-आसीत्
a fearful outcry great arose
भूतानाम् तत्र पश्यताम्
from the beings there watching
विनद्य सौभराट्-उच्चै:-
declared The Saubh king loudly,
इदम्-आह जनार्दनम्
this said to Krishna

A great fearful outcry arose from the beings who were watching. The Saubha king then declared loudly and said this to Krishna,…


यत्त्वया मूढ न: सख्युर्भ्रातुर्भार्या हृतेक्षताम् ।

प्रमत्त: स सभामध्ये त्वया व्यापादित: सखा ॥१७॥


यत्-त्वया मूढ न: सख्यु:-
in that, by You O Fool! of our friend
भ्रातु:-भार्या हृता-ईक्षताम्
and brother wife was abducted, as people looked on,
प्रमत्त: स: सभा-मध्ये
inattentive he, in the meeting hall middle
त्वया व्यापादित: सखा
by You was killed the friend

'Because, O Fool! As the people looked on, You abducted the wife of our friend and brother, and just when he was inattentive, You killed the friend in the middle of the meeting hall.'


तं त्वाद्य निशितैर्बाणैरपराजितमानिनम् ।

नयाम्यपुनरावृत्तिं यदि तिष्ठेर्ममाग्रत: ॥१८॥


तम् त्वा-अद्य निशितै:-बाणै:-
that You, today, with sharp arrows
अपराजित-मानिनम्
invincible believing,
नयामि-अपुनरावृत्तिम्
will take to unreturnable state,
यदि तिष्ठे:-मम-अग्रत:
if stay in my front

That you, believing Yourself to be invincible, I will take to the unreturnable state, with sharp arrows, if You stay in front of me.


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
वृथा त्वं कत्थसे मन्द न पश्यस्यन्तिकेऽन्तकम् ।

पौरुषं दर्शयन्ति स्म शूरा न बहुभाषिण: ॥१९॥


वृथा त्वम् कत्थसे मन्द
needlessly, you blabber, O Dumb One!
न पश्यसि-अन्तिके-अन्तकम्
do not see, near by, Death
पौरुषम् दर्शयन्ति स्म
valour exhibit
शूरा: न बहु-भाषिण:
the warriors do not brag

'O Dumb One! Why do you blabber needlessly? Do you not see Death standing near you? Warriors just exhibit their valour and do not brag.'


इत्युक्त्वा भगवाञ्छाल्वं गदया भीमवेगया ।

तताड जत्रौ संरब्ध: स चकम्पे वमन्नसृक् ॥२०॥


इति-उक्त्वा भगवान्-
so saying, The Lord,
शाल्वम् गदया भीम-वेगया
Shaalva, with the mace, in great speed
तताड जत्रौ संरब्ध:
hit on the collar bone, in anger,
स: चकम्पे वमन्-असृक्
he trembled, vomiting blood

So saying, The Lord, in anger and in great speed, hit Shaalva on the collar bone with the mace. He trembled as he vomited blood.


गदायां सन्निवृत्तायां शाल्वस्त्वन्तरधीयत ।

ततो मूहुर्तं आगत्य पुरुष: शिरसाच्युतम् ।

देवक्या प्रहितोऽस्मीति नत्वा प्राह वचो रुदन् ॥२१॥


गदायाम् सन्निवृत्तायाम्
The mace having returned,
शाल्व:-तु-अन्तरधीयत
Shaalva and having disappeared,
तत: मूहुर्तम् आगत्य
then, in an hour, coming,
पुरुष: शिरसा-अच्युतम्
a man, with head, to Krishna,
देवक्या प्रहित:-अस्मि-इति
by Devaki sent am I, this,
नत्वा प्राह वच: रुदन्
bowing, said words weeping

The mace returned to Krishna, and Shaalva disappeared. Then, in a hour's time, a man came and bowed with his head, to Krishna, and said, weeping, 'I am sent here by Devaki,'….


कृष्ण कृष्ण महाबाहो पिता ते पितृवत्सल ।

बद्ध्वापनीत: शाल्वेन सौनिकेन यथा पशु: ॥२२॥


कृष्ण कृष्ण महाबाहो
'Krishna! O Krishna! Mighty armed!
पिता ते पितृवत्सल
father Your's, O Devotee of parents!
बद्ध्वा-अपनीत: शाल्वेन
tied and taken away by Shaalva,
सौनिकेन यथा पशु:
by butcher like an animal

'Krishna! O Krishna! Mighty armed One! O Devotee of parents! Your father is tied and taken away by Shaalva, just as the butcher takes away an animal.'


निशम्य विप्रियं कृष्णो मानुषीं प्रकृतिम् गत: ।

विमनस्को घृणी स्नेहाद् बभाषे प्राकृतो यथा ॥२३॥


निशम्य विप्रियम् कृष्ण:
hearing the unpleasant, Krishna,
मानुषीम् प्रकृतिम् गत:
human behaviour followed
विमनस्क: घृणी स्नेहात्
feeling sorry, with compassion and love,
बभाषे प्राकृत: यथा
said, mortal man like

Hearing that unpleasant message, Krishna, behaved like mortal men. With love and affection He was sorry and like human beings said,….


कथं राममसम्भ्रान्तं जित्वाजेयं सुरासुरै: ।

शाल्वेनाल्पीयसा नीत: पिता मे बलवान् विधि: ॥२४॥


कथम् रामम्-असम्भ्रान्तम्
how, Balaraama the vigilant,
जित्वा-अजेयम् सुर-असुरै:
winning over, unconquerable, even by gods and demons,
शाल्वेन-अल्पीयसा नीत:
by Shaalva, of little valour, is taken
पिता मे बलवान् विधि:
father mine, mighty is destiny

'How is it that the vigilant Balaraama, who is unconquerable by the gods and demons, was defeated by Shaalva of little valour, and My father was taken away by him?' Mighty indeed is destiny.


इति ब्रुवाणे गोविन्दे सौभराट् प्रत्युपस्थित: ।

वसुदेवमिवानीय कृष्णं चेदमुवाच स: ॥२५॥


इति ब्रुवाणे गोविन्दे
so saying by Govinda,
सौभराट् प्रत्युपस्थित:
the Saubha king, returned
वसुदेवम्-इव-आनीय
Vasudeva like bringing
कृष्णम् च-इदम्-उवाच स:
Krishna and this said he

As Govinda said so, the Saubha king returned with a Vasudeva like person, and he said this to Krishna,….


एष ते जनिता तातो यदर्थमिह जीवसि ।

वधिष्ये वीक्षतस्तेऽमुमीशश्चेत् पाहि बालिश ॥२६॥


एष: ते जनिता तात:
this is Your birth giving father,
यत्-अर्थम्-इह जीवसि
for whose sake here (You) live
वधिष्ये वीक्षत:-ते-अमुम्-
will kill as look on You, him,
ईश:-चेत् पाहि बालिश
if God are,

'This is Your birth giving father, for whose sake You live here. I will kill him even as You look on. Save him, if You are All mighty, O Fool!'


एवं निर्भर्त्स्य मायावी खड्गेनानकदुन्दुभे: ।

उत्कृत्य शिर आदाय स्वस्थं सौभं समाविशत् ॥२७॥


एवम् निर्भर्त्स्य मायावी
thus, reprimanding the magician
खड्गेन-अनकदुन्दुभे:
with the bolt, of Vasudeva
उत्कृत्य शिर: आदाय
cut off the head, taking it,
स्वस्थम् सौभम् समाविशत्
in the sky standing, Saubha entered

Thus reprimanding, Krishna, He cut off the head of (the seeming) Vasudeva, and took it in the Saubha standing in sky, and boarded it.


ततो मुहूर्तं प्रकृतावुपप्लुत: स्वबोध आस्ते स्वजनानुषङ्गत: ।

महानुभावस्तदबुद्ध्यादासुरीं मायां स शाल्वप्रसृतां मयोदिताम् ॥२८॥


तत: मुहूर्तम् प्रकृतौ-उपप्लुत:
then for an hour, in emotions drowned,
स्व-बोध: आस्ते
in self-knowledge, having,
स्व-जन-अनुषङ्गत:
by own person's affection,
महानुभाव:-तत्-अबुद्ध्यात्-
The great Powerful, that, understood
आसुरीम् मायाम् स: शाल्व-
the demonic mysticism, by him Shaalva
प्रसृताम् मय-उदिताम्
extended, by Maya taught

For an hour, Krishna having the perfect Self-knowledge, was drowned in emotions caused by the affection of His own father. Then, The All Powerful One understood it all to be the demonic mysticism extended by Shaalva, taught to him by Maya.


न तत्र दूतं पितु: कलेवरं प्रबुद्ध आजौ समपश्यदच्युत: ।

स्वाप्नं यथा चाम्बरचारिणं रिपुं सौभस्थमालोक्य निहन्तुमुद्यत: ॥२९॥


न तत्र दूतम् पितु: कलेवरम्
not there the messenger, father's body or,
प्रबुद्ध आजौ
coming to consciousness, in the battle
समपश्यत्-अच्युत:
saw, Krishna
स्वाप्नम् यथा च-
dream just as, and,
अम्बर-चारिणम् रिपुम् सौभ-स्थम्-
in the sky roaming enemy in the Saubha sitting
आलोक्य निहन्तुम्-उद्यत:
seeing, to kill became eager

Regaining consciousness, Krishna saw that there in the battle field, the messenger, or His father's body were not to be seen, like the vision in a dream. Then, seeing the enemy, roaming in the sky, seated in Saubha, He became eager to kill him.


एवं वदन्ति राजर्षे ऋषय: के च नान्विता: ।

यत् स्ववाचो विरुध्येत नूनं ते न स्मरन्त्युत ॥३०॥


एवम् वदन्ति राजर्षे
so say, O Royal sage!
ऋषय: के च न-अन्विता:
sages, some, and not consistent,
यत् स्व-वाच: विरुध्येत
that, own words contradict
नूनम् ते न स्मरन्ति-उत
surely, they do not remember indeed

O Royal sage! Some sages say so, about that incident. Surely, for not being consistent, they contradict their own words, which they surely do not remember.


क्व शोकमोहौ स्नेहो वा भयं वा येऽज्ञसम्भवा: ।

क्व चाखण्डितविज्ञानज्ञानैश्वर्यस्त्वखण्डित: ॥३१॥


क्व शोक-मोहौ स्नेह: वा
where grief, infatuation, affection, or
भयम् वा ये-अज्ञ-सम्भवा:
fear or, for those ignorant is possible
क्व च-अखण्डित-विज्ञान-
where and infinite knowledge,
ऐश्वर्य:-तु-अखण्डित:
glory and infinite

Only for those who are ignorant, there is grief, infatuation, affection or fear. Where do they stand against the infinite knowledge and glory of The Lord?


यत्पादसेवोर्जितयाऽऽत्मविद्यया हिन्वन्त्यनाद्यात्मविपर्ययग्रहम् ।

लभन्त आत्मीयमनन्तमैश्वरं कुतो नु मोह: परमस्य सद्गते: ॥३२॥


यत्-पाद-सेवा-अर्जितया-
by Whose feet service, gained
आत्म-विद्यया हिन्वन्ति-
by Self Knowledge, shatter
अनादि-आत्म-विपर्यय-ग्रहम्
timeless Self ignorance held
लभन्त आत्मीयम्-अनन्तम्-
attain of The Self infinite
ऐश्वरम् कुत: नु मोह:
glory, how indeed delusion
परमस्य सद्गते:
of The Infinite, The sole refuge

By the service of Whose feet Self knowledge is gained and the timeless ignorance of the self held on to, is shattered, and the infinite glory of The Self is attained, how indeed there is delusion for That Infinite Lord, and The sole Refuge?


तं शस्त्रपूगै: प्रहरन्तमोजसा शाल्वं शरै: शौरिरमोघविक्रम: ।

विद्ध्वाच्छिनद् वर्म धनु: शिरोमणिं सौभं च शत्रोर्गदया रुरोज ह ॥३३॥


तम् शस्त्र-पूगै: प्रहरन्तम्-
him with weapons' volleys, striking
ओजसा शाल्वम् शरै:
with vigour, Shaalva with arrows
शौरि:-अमोघ-विक्रम:
Shauree, of invincible power,
विद्ध्वा-अच्छिनत् वर्म धनु:
piercing smashed the shield and bow,
शिरोमणिम् सौभम् च
the crown crest, Saubha and
शत्रो:-गदया रुरोज ह
of the enemy with mace tore apart

With vigour, Shauree, of invincible power, struck Shaalva with volleys of weapons and with arrows, pierced his shield and bow, and smashed the crown crust, and tore apart the enemy's Saubha with a mace.


तत् कृष्णहस्तेरितया विचूर्णितं पपात तोये गदया सहस्रधा ।

विसृज्य तद् भूतलमास्थितो गदामुद्यम्य शाल्वोऽच्युतमभ्यगाद् द्रुतम् ॥३४॥


तत् कृष्ण-हस्त-ईरितया
that by Krishna's hand struck
विचूर्णितम् पपात तोये
powdered, fell into the water
गदया सहस्रधा
by the mace into thousands,
विसृज्य तद् भूतलम्-
abandoning that, on the earth's surface
आस्थित: गदाम्-उद्यम्य
stood mace wielding
शाल्व:-अच्युतम्-अभ्यगात् द्रुतम्
Shaalva, Krishna attacked in a rush

That Saubha, struck by Krishna's hand was crushed into powder and fell into a thousand pieces in the water. Abandoning that, Shaalva stood on the earth's surface, wielding a mace and in a rush attacked Krishna.


आधावत: सगदं तस्य बाहुं भल्लेन छित्त्वाथ रथाङ्गमद्भुतम् ।

वधाय शाल्वस्य लयार्कसन्निभं विभ्रद् बभौ सार्क इवोदयाचल: ॥३५॥


आधावत: स-गदम् तस्य
on attacking with the mace, his,
बाहुम् भल्लेन छित्त्वा-अथ
the arm with a spear cutting, then,
रथाङ्गम्-अद्भुतम्
the discus wonderful
वधाय शाल्वस्य लय-अर्क-
to kill Shaalva, deluge time Sun
सन्निभम् विभ्रद् बभौ
like, wielding became
स-अर्क इव-उदयाचल:
with the Sun, like the Mount Udayaachala

On Shaalva's attacking with the mace, Krishna cut off his arm with a spear. Then to kill him, He wielded His splendid discus, dazzling like the Sun at the time of the deluge, and He Himself was splendorous like the Sun on the Mount Udayaachala.


जहार तेनैव शिर: सकुण्डलं किरीटयुक्तं पुरुमायिनो हरि: ।

वज्रेण वृत्रस्य यथा पुरन्दरो बभूव हाहेति वचस्तदा नृणाम् ॥३६॥


जहार तेन-एव शिर:
sheered with that only, the head,
स-कुण्डलम् किरीट-युक्तम्
with the ear-rings, crown with,
पुरुमायिन: हरि:
of the great magician, Shree Hari,
वज्रेण वृत्रस्य यथा पुरन्दर:
with the bolt of Vritraasura, just like Indra,
बभूव हा-हा-इति वच:-
there was, ' Oh! Oh! Such sound
तदा नृणाम्
then of the men

With that discus only, The Lord Shree Hari sheered the head along with the ear-rings and the crown, of the great magician, just as Indra had cut off the head of Vritraasura with a bolt. There was a loud outcry of dismay in the crowd.


तस्मिन् निपतिते पापे सौभे च गदया हते ।

नेदुर्दुन्दुभयो राजन् दिवि देवगणेरिता: ।

सखीनामपचितिं कुर्वन् दन्तवक्त्रो रुषाभ्यगात् ॥३७॥


तस्मिन् निपतिते पापे
his, having fallen,
सौभे च गदया हते
Saubha and by the mace hit,
नेदु:-दुन्दुभय: राजन्
sounded trumpets, O King!
दिवि देव-गण-ईरिता:
in the heaven by the gods' sounded,
सखीनाम्-अपचितिम् कुर्वन्
of the friends avenge seeking
दन्तवक्त्र: रुषा-अभ्यगात्
Dantavaktra, in rage came

O king! Shaalva's having fallen and the Saubha being crushed with the mace, the gods in the heavens sounded trumpets. Dantavaktra came there in a rage to avenge for his friends.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे सौभवधो नाम सप्तसप्ततितम: अध्याय: ॥७७॥


Thus ends the seventy-seventh discourse entitled 'The Deliverance of Shaalva,' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
