श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथान्यदपि कृष्णस्य शृणु कर्माद्भुतं नृप ।
क्रीडानरशरीरस्य यथा सौभपतिर्हत: ॥१॥
अथ-अन्यत्-अपि कृष्णस्य
now, another also, of Krishna
शृणु कर्म-अद्भुतम् नृप
listen to deed strange, O King!
क्रीडा-नर-शरीरस्य
of sporting mortal bodied
यथा सौभपति:-हत:
as to how Saubha owner was killed
O King! Now listen to another of a strange deed of Krishna, sportingly assuming a mortal body. It is about how Saamba, the owner of the celebrated aerial car Saubha, was killed.
शिशुपालसख: शाल्वो रुक्मिण्युद्वाह आगत: ।
यदुभिर्निर्जित: संख्ये जरासन्धादयस्तथा ॥२॥

Shishupaala friend Shaalva
रुक्मिणी-उद्वाह आगत:
in Rukmini's wedding had come
यदुभि:-निर्जित: संख्ये
by the Yadus was defeated in battle
जरासन्ध-आदय:-तथा
Jaraasandha and others also
Shishupaala friend Shaalva, had come for the wedding of Rukmini. He, and also Jaraasandha and others were defeated in the battle by the Yadus.
शाल्व: प्रतिज्ञामकरोत् शृण्वतां सर्वभूभुजाम् ।
अयादवीं क्ष्मां करिष्ये पौरुषं मम पश्यत ॥३॥
शाल्व: प्रतिज्ञाम्-अकरोत्
Shaalva a vow took
शृण्वताम् सर्व-भूभुजाम्
in the hearing of all the kings
अ-यादवीम् क्ष्माम् करिष्ये
'without the Yaadavaas, the earth will render
पौरुषम् मम पश्यत
valour mine may witness'
Shaalva, in the hearing of all the kings took a vow, 'I will render the earth devoid of the Yadus! Wait and witness my valour!'
इति मूढ: प्रतिज्ञाय देवं पशुपतिं प्रभुम् ।
आराधयामास नृप पांसुमुष्टिं सकृद् ग्रसन् ॥४॥
इति मूढ: प्रतिज्ञाय
thus, the fool promising,
देवम् पशुपतिम् प्रभुम्
the lord Pashupati almighty
आराधयामास नृप
worshipped, O King!
पांसु-मुष्टिम् सकृद् ग्रसन्
ashes, one fistful one eating
O King! The fool promised thus, and started to worship the lord almighty Pashupati, eating one fist full of ashes, once a day.
संवत्सरान्ते भगवानाशुतोष उमापति: ।
वरेणच्छन्दयामास शाल्वं शरणमागतम् ॥५॥
संवत्सर-अन्ते भगवान्-
at the year's end, The Lord
आशुतोष: उमापति:
Shankara, Uma's husband,
वरेण-च्छन्दयामास
with a boon offered
शाल्वम् शरणम्-आगतम्
Shaalva, for protection who had come
At the end of the year, the easily pleased Uma's husband, Lord Shankara, offered a boon to Shaalva who had come to His protection.
देवासुरमनुष्याणां गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम् ।
अभेद्यं कामगं वव्रे स यानं वृष्णिभीषणम् ॥६॥
देव-असुर-मनुष्याणाम्
by the gods, demons, men,
गन्धर्व-उरग-रक्षसाम्
Gandharvas, Uragas, Raakshasas,
अभेद्यम् कामगम् वव्रे
undestroyable, running at will asked for
स: यानम् वृष्णि-भीषणम्
he an aerial car for the Vrishnees a terror
For a boon, he asked for an aerial car undestroyable by the gods, demons, men, Gandharvas, Uragas, Raakshasas, which would run on will, and will be a terror for the Vrishnees.
तथेति गिरिशादिष्टो मय: परपुरञ्जय: ।
पुरं निर्माय शाल्वाय प्रादात्सौभमयस्मयम् ॥७॥
तथा-इति गिरिश-आदिष्ट:
'so be it' Lord Shankara instructed
मय: परपुरञ्जय:
Maya the winner of cities,
पुरम् निर्माय शाल्वाय
a city like constructed, to Shaalva
प्रादात्-सौभम्-अयस्मयम्
gave Saubha, of steel made
Lord Shankara said, 'so be it', and instructed the winner of the cities, Maya, to construct a city like chariot, Saubha, made of steel and gave it to Shaalva.
स ल्ब्ध्वा कामगं यानं तमोधाम दुरासदम् ।
ययौ द्वारवतीं शाल्वो वैरं वृष्णिकृतं स्मरन् ॥८॥
स: ल्ब्ध्वा काम-गम् यानम्
he obtaining the driven at will car,
तम:-धाम दुरासदम्
of darkness abode, inaccessible ,
ययौ द्वारवतीम् शाल्व:
went to Dwaarakaa, Shaalva
वैरम् वृष्णि-कृतम् स्मरन्
grudge against the Vrishnees remembering
He, Shaalva, obtained the car which could be driven at will, an abode of darkness, and was inaccessible to others. He remembering the grudge against the Vrishnees, went to Dwaarakaa.
निरुद्ध्य सेनया शाल्वो महत्या भरतर्षभ ।
पुरीं बभञ्जोपवनान्युद्यानानि च सर्वश: ॥९॥
निरुद्ध्य सेनया शाल्व:
besieging by the army, Shaalva,
महत्या भरतर्षभ
huge, O Scion of the Bharata's
पुरीम् बभञ्ज-उपवनानि-
the city destroyed, the gardens
उद्यानानि च सर्वश:
and parks, and every where
O Scion of the Bharata's! besieging with the huge army, the city, he destroyed the gardens and parks everywhere.
सगोपुराणि द्वाराणि प्रासादाट्टालतोलिका: ।
विहारान् स विमानाग्र्यान्निपेतु: शस्त्रवृष्टय: ॥१०॥
सगोपुराणि द्वाराणि
with the arches, the gateways,
प्रासाद-अट्टाल-तोलिका:
the mansions with upper stories, the walls,
विहारान् स विमान-
the entertainment chambers, he, by the car's
अग्र्यात्-निपेतु: शस्त्र-वृष्टय:
front destructed, showered weapons as rains
He destructed the gateways with the arches, the mansions with upper stories, the walls, the entertainment chambers, and from the front side of the car, he showered volleys of weapons as rain.
शिला द्रुमाश्चाशनय: सर्पा आसारशर्करा: ।
प्रचण्डश्चक्रवातोऽभूद् रजसाऽऽच्छादिता दिश: ॥११॥
शिला द्रुमा:-च-अशनय:
rocks, trees, and thunder,
सर्पा: आसार-शर्करा:
snakes, hail stones
प्रचण्ड:-चक्रवात:-अभूदत्
terrible tornado happened
रजसा-आच्छादिता: दिश:
by dust was covered the directions
There was a terrible tornado, showering rocks, trees, thunderbolts, snakes and hailstones, and sand dust arose covering all the directions.
इत्यर्द्यमाना सौभेन कृष्णस्य नगरी भृशम् ।
नाभ्यपद्यत शं राजंस्त्रिपुरेण यथा मही ॥१२॥
इति-अर्द्यमाना सौभेन
thus trampled by Saubha
कृष्णस्य नगरी भृशम्
Krishna's city badly,
न-अभ्यपद्यत शम्
did not attain peace,
राजन्-त्रिपुरेण यथा मही
O King! by Tripuraasura like the earth
Thus Krishna's city wad badly trampled by the Saubha and did not attain peace, like the earth had not attained peace due to Tripuraasura atrocities.
प्रद्युम्नो भगवान् वीक्ष्य बाध्यमाना निजा: प्रजा: ।
मा भैष्टेत्यभ्यधाद् वीरो रथारूढो महायशा: ॥१३॥
प्रद्युम्न: भगवान् वीक्ष्य
Pradyumna, the lord, observing
बाध्यमाना: निजा: प्रजा:
the distressed own people
मा भैष्ट-इति-अभ्यधात्
'Do not fear' thus assured
वीर: रथ-आरूढ: महायशा:
the warrior on the chariot mounted of great fame
Lord Pradyumna, observing the distress of his own people, mounted the chariot, 'Do not fear!' thus reassured the public, the well renowned warrior.
सात्यकिश्चारुदेष्णश्च साम्बोऽक्रूर: सहानुज: ।
हार्दिक्यो भानुविन्दश्च गदश्च शुकसारणौ ॥१४॥
सात्यकि:-चारुदेष्ण:-च
Saatyaki, Chaarudeshna, and
साम्ब:-अक्रूर: सह-अनुज:
Saamba, Akroora, with the brothers,
हार्दिक्य: भानुविन्द:-च
Haardikya, Bhaanuvinda and
गद:-च शुक-सारणौ
Gada and Shuka and Saarana
Saatyaki, Chaarudeshna, and Saamba, Akroora, with the brothers, Haardikya, Bhaanuvinda and Gada and Shuka and Saarana,….
अपरे च महेष्वासा रथयूथपयूथपा: ।
निर्ययुर्दंशिता गुप्ता रथेभाश्वपदातिभि: ॥१५॥
अपरे च महेष्वासा:
others and archers,
रथयूथप-यूथपा:
charioteers, and generals,
निर्ययु:-दंशिता: गुप्ता:
went out, armoured, and protected,
रथ-इभ-अश्व-पदातिभि:
with chariots, elephants, horses and foot soldiers
Other generals too set forth, the archers and charioteers, all armoured and well protected, with chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers.
तत: प्रववृते युद्धं शाल्वानां यदुभि: सह ।
यथा सुराणां विबुधैस्तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ॥१६॥
तत: प्रववृते युद्धम्
then started a battle
शाल्वानाम् यदुभि: सह
of the Shaalva the Yadus with
यथा-असुराणाम् विबुधै:-
just as of the demons with the deities
तुमुलम् लोम-हर्षणम्
terrific, thrilling
Then a fierce terrific battle ensued between the Shaalva and the Yadus, just as there was the bitter conflict between the Asuras and the Devas.
ताश्च सौभपतेर्माया दिव्यास्त्रै रुक्मिणीसुत: ।
क्षणेन नाशयामास नैशं तम इवोष्णगु: ॥१७॥
ता:-च सौभपते:-माया
those and Shaalva's magic
दिव्य-अस्त्रै: रुक्मिणी-सुत:
by divine weapons, Rukmini's son (Pradyumna)
क्षणेन नाशयामास
in a moment destroyed
नैशम् तम: इव-उष्णगु:
the night's darkness like the Sun
Then, Rukmini's son, Pradyumna, in a moment destroyed the magic spell of Shaalva, the owner of Saubha, with the divine weapons, just as the Sun destroys the darkness of the night.
विव्याध पञ्चविंशत्या स्वर्णपुङ्खैरयोमुखै: ।
शाल्वस्य ध्वजिनीपालं शरै: सन्नतपर्वभि: ॥१८॥
विव्याध पञ्चविंशत्या
pierced with twenty five
स्वर्ण-पुङ्खै:-अय:-मुखै:
with golden feathers, and iron tips,
शाल्वस्य ध्वजिनीपालम्
Shaalva's commander in chief
शरै: सन्नत-पर्वभि:
with arrows with hidden knots
With twenty five arrows of golden feather, iron tips and hidden knots, he pierced the commander in chief of Shaalva.
शतेनाताडयच्छाल्वमेकैकेनास्य सैनिकान् ।
दशभिर्दशभिर्नेतृन् वाहनानि त्रिभिस्त्रिभि: ॥१९॥
शतेन-अताडयत्-शाल्वम्-
with a hundred hit Shaalva,
एक-एकेन-अस्य सैनिकान्
with one each the soldiers,
दशभि:-दशभि:-नेतृन्
with ten each the leaders,
वाहनानि त्रिभि:-त्रिभि:
and the horses with three each
He hit Shaalva with a hundred arrows, and the soldiers with one each, the leaders with ten each and the horses with three arrows each.
तदद्भुतं महत् कर्म प्रद्युम्नस्य महात्मन: ।
दृष्ट्वा तं पूजयामासु: सर्वे स्वपरसैनिका: ॥२०॥
तत्-अद्भुतम् महत् कर्म
that wonderful great deed
प्रद्युम्नस्य महात्मन:
of Pradyumna the great soul,
दृष्ट्वा तम् पूजयामासु:
witnessing, him worshipped
सर्वे: स्व-पर-सैनिका:
all own and other soldiers
Having witnessed this wonderful great deed of the great soul Pradyumna, all the soldiers, his own and others, worshipped him.
बहुरूपैकरूपं तद् दृश्यते न च दृश्यते ।
मायामयं मयकृतं दुर्विभाव्यं परैरभूत् ॥२१॥
बहु-रूप-एक-रूपम् तत्
in many shapes, in one shape,
दृश्यते न च दृश्यते
is seen, not and is seen
मायामयम् मय-कृतम्
of magical properties, by Maya constructed,
दुर्विभाव्यम् परै:-अभूत्
unfathomable by others became
The aerial car Saubha was constructed by Maya, and had magical properties. It was now in many forms and now in one form, was seen and at times not seen, and so it was unfathomable for others.
क्वचिद् भूमौ क्वचिद् व्योम्नि गिरिमूर्ध्नि जले क्वचित् ।
अलातचक्रवद् भ्राम्यत् सौभं तद् दुरवस्थितम् ॥२२॥
क्वचिद् भूमौ क्वचिद् व्योम्नि
sometimes on the land, sometimes in the sky,
गिरि-मूर्ध्नि जले क्वचित्
on the mountain peak, on water at times,
अलात-चक्रवत् भ्राम्यत्
fireball like rotated
सौभम् तत् दुरवस्थितम्
Saubha that, uncontrollable
That Saubha was sometimes on the land, and sometimes in the sky, on the mountain peak at times, and then on water, uncontrollable, it rotated round and round like a fire ball.
यत्र यत्रोपलक्ष्येत ससौभ: सहसैनिक: ।
शाल्वस्ततस्ततोऽमुञ्चन् शरान् सात्वतयूथपा: ॥२३॥
यत्र यत्र-उपलक्ष्येत
wherever was seen
ससौभ: सह-सैनिक:
with the Saubha and with the soldiers
शाल्व:-तत:-तत:-अमुञ्चन्
Shaalva, there all discharged
शरान् सात्वत-यूथपा:
arrows the Yadu warriors
The Yadu warriors discharged arrows wherever Shaalva was seen with the Saubha and with the soldiers.
शरैरग्न्यर्कसंस्पर्शैराशीविषदुरासदै: ।
पीड्यमानपुरानीक: शाल्वोऽमुह्यत् परेरितै: ॥२४॥
शरै:-अग्नि-अर्क-संस्पर्शै:-
with arrows, fire, and sun blazing,
आशी-विष-दुरासदै:
snakes venom unbearable,
पीड्यमान-पुर-अनीक:
tortured, the city and army
शाल्व:-अमुह्यत् पर-ईरितै:
Shaalva fainted by the enemy discharged
The city and the army were tortured by the sun and fire like blazing, and venomous snakes like arrows discharged by the enemy, and Shaalva also fainted.
शाल्वानीकपशस्त्रौघैर्वृष्णिवीरा भृशार्दिता: ।
न तत्यजू रणं स्वं स्वं लोकद्वयजिगीषव: ॥२५॥
शाल्व-अनीकप-शस्त्र-औघै:-
by Shaalva army generals' weapons' volleys
वृष्णि-वीरा: भृश-आर्दिता:
the Yaadavaas warriors were very distressed
न तत्यजु: रणम्
did not gave up the battle,
स्वम् स्वम् लोक-द्वय-जिगीषव:
and own position, the worlds both wanting to win
The Yaadavaas warriors were very distressed by the volley of weapons of the Shaalva army generals, but they did not abandon the battle, nor did they give up their own positions, wanting to win both the worlds.
शाल्वामात्यो द्युमान् नाम प्रद्युम्नं प्राक् प्रपीडित: ।
आसाद्य गदया मौर्व्या व्याहत्य व्यनदद् बली ॥२६॥
शाल्व-आमात्य: द्युमान् नाम
Shaalva's minister, Dyumaana named,
प्रद्युम्नम् प्राक् प्रपीडित:
by Pradyumna, formerly attacked,
आसाद्य गदया मौर्व्या
snatching a mace of steel
व्याहत्य व्यनदत् बली
struck and roared the warrior
Shaalva's minister, named Dyumaana, who was previously attacked by Pradyumna, snatched a steel mace and struck hard and roared aloud.
प्रद्युम्नं गदया शीर्णवक्ष:स्थलमरिन्दमम् ।
अपोवाह रणात् सूतो धर्मविद् दारुकात्मज: ॥२७॥
प्रद्युम्नम् गदया शीर्ण-
Pradyumna, by the mace smashed
वक्ष:स्थलम्-अरिन्दमम्
chest place, the chastiser of the foe,
अपोवाह रणात् सूत:
took away from the battle, the charioteer
धर्मवित् दारुक-आत्मज:
the rules knower, Daaruka's son
Daaruka's son, the charioteer, who knew the battle rules, took away Pradyumna, the chastiser of the foe, from the battle, as his chest was smashed by the mace.
लब्धसंज्ञो मुहुर्तेन कार्ष्णि: सारथिमब्रवीत् ।
अहो असाध्विदं सूत यद् रणान्मेऽपसर्पणम् ॥२८॥
लब्ध-संज्ञ: मुहुर्तेन
gaining consciousness, in a hour,
कार्ष्णि: सारथिम्-अब्रवीत्
Pradyumna to the charioteer said,
अहो असाधु-इदम् सूत
'O! bad this, Charioteer!
यत् रणात्-मे-अपसर्पणम्
that from battle me bringing away'
Pradyumna regained consciousness in an hour and said, 'This was not good, O Charioteer! That you brought me away from the battle.'
न यदूनां कुले जात: श्रूयते रणविच्युत: ।
विना मत् क्लीवचित्तेन सूतेन प्राप्तकिल्बिषात् ॥२९॥
न यदूनाम् कुले जात:
not in the Yadu clan born
श्रूयते रण-विच्युत:
is heard to flee from battle,
विना मत् क्लीव-चित्तेन
except me, by the dumb minded
सूतेन प्राप्त-किल्बिषात्
charioteer, have attained the sin
No one born in the clan of the Yadus, is heard of fleeing from the battle, except me, who has earned this sin because of this dumb minded charioteer.
किं नु वक्ष्येऽभिसङ्गम्य पितरौ रामकेशवौ ।
युद्धात् सम्यगपक्रान्त: पृष्टस्तत्रात्मन: क्षमम् ॥३०
किम् नु वक्ष्ये-अभिसङ्गम्य
what, indeed will say facing
पितरौ राम-केशवौ
the fathers, Balaraama and Keshava,
युद्धात् सम्यक्-अपक्रान्त:
from the battle field well fled,
पृष्ट:-तत्र-आत्मन: क्षमम्
asked, there, self defending
Indeed! That I have well fled away from the battle, what, in self defence will I tell both my fathers, Balaraama and Keshava, when I face them, and I am asked by them.
व्यक्तं मे कथयिष्यन्ति हसन्त्यो भ्रातृजामय: ।
क्लैव्यं कथं कथं वीर तवान्यै: कथ्यतां मृधे ॥३१॥
व्यक्तम् मे कथयिष्यन्ति
obviously to me will say
हसन्त्य: भ्रातृ-जामय:
mockingly, brother's wives,
क्लैव्यम् कथम् कथम् वीर
unmanliness how, how O Warrior
तव-अन्यै: कथ्यताम् मृधे
your, by the others, do say in the battle
Obviously my brothers wives will mockingly tell me, ' Do say, O Warrior, how you lost your manliness to the enemy in the battle?'
सारथि:-उवाच -
The Charioteer said -
धर्मं विजानताऽऽयुष्मन् कृतमेतन्मया विभो ।
सूत: कृच्छ्रगतं रक्षेद् रथिनं सारथिं रथी ॥३२॥
धर्मम् विजानता-आयुष्मन्
the proper conduct knowing, O Long lived One!
कृतम्-एतत्-मया विभो
was done this by me, O Lord!
सूत: कृच्छ्र-गतम् रक्षेद्
charioteer, in trouble facing, should protect
रथिनम् सारथिम् रथी
the mount, the charioteer the mount
O Long lived One! Knowing the proper conduct, I have done this, O Lord! In the face of danger, the charioteer should protect the mount and the mount should protect the charioteer.
एतत् विदित्वा तु भवान् मयापोवाहितो रणात् ।
उपसृष्ट: परेणेति मूर्च्छितो गदया हत: ॥३३॥
एतत् विदित्वा तु भवान्
this knowing, indeed, you,
मया-अपोवाहित: रणात्
by me were taken away from battle,
उपसृष्ट: परेण-इति
in fatal condition, by the enemy
मूर्च्छित: गदया हत:
fainted by the mace hit
Aware of this, I took you away from the battle. Hit by the enemy by the mace, you had fainted and were in a fatal condition.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे शाल्वयुद्धे षट्सप्ततितम: अध्याय: ॥७६॥
Thus ends the seventy-sixth discourse, bearing on the (Yadus') encounter with Shaalva, in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
