श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तत: पर्वण्युपावृत्ते प्रचण्ड: पांसुवर्षण: ।

भीमो वायुरभूद् राजन् पूयगन्धस्तु सर्वश: ॥१॥


तत: पर्वणि-उपावृत्ते
then, on fortnight having come,
प्रचण्ड पांसु-वर्षण:
terrible dust storm
भीम: वायु:-अभूत् राजन्
fierce wind was there, O King!
पूय-गन्ध:-तु सर्वश:
pus smell indeed everywhere

O King! Then, when the fortnight came, there was a fierce wind and dust storm with pus smell everywhere.


ततोऽमेध्यमयं वर्षं बल्वलेन विनिर्मितम् ।

अभवद् यज्ञशालायां सोऽन्वदृश्यत शूलधृक् ॥२॥


तत:-अमेध्यमयम् वर्षम्
then, of blood urine consisting rain
बल्वलेन विनिर्मितम्
by Balwala conjured,
अभवद् यज्ञ-शालायाम्
was there, in the sacrificial hall,
स:-अन्वदृश्यत शूलधृक्
he after that was seen, trident holding

Then, conjured by Balwala, there was a very impure rain consisting of blood urine etc., inside the sacrificial hall. After that he himself was also seen holding a trident.


तं विलोक्य बृहत्कायं भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमम् ।

तप्तताम्रशिखाश्मश्रुं दंष्ट्रोग्रभ्रुकुटीमुखम् ॥३॥


तम् विलोक्य बृहत्-कायम्
him seeing with a huge body,
भिन्न-अञ्जन-चय-उपमम्
dense corrilium gathered like,
तप्त-ताम्र-शिखा-श्मश्रुम्
molten copper hair and moustaches,
दंष्ट्र-उग्र-भ्रुकुटी-मुखम्
teeth fierce, eyebrows, and face

Seeing him with a huge body, like dense corrilium gathered, with hair and moustache like molten copper, and a fierce face with fierce teeth and eyebrows,…..


सस्मार मुसलं राम: परसैन्यविदारणम् ।

हलं च दैत्यदमनं ते तूर्णमुपतस्थतु: ॥४॥


सस्मार मुसलम् राम:
remembered the pestle Balaraama,
पर-सैन्य-विदारणम्
enemy's army destroyer,
हलम् च दैत्य-दमनम्
plough and demon vanquishing,
ते तूर्णम्-उपतस्थतु:
they both soon presented themselves

Balaraama then summoned his two weapons, the enemy's army destroyer pestle and the demons vanquishing plough. Both of them soon presented themselves.


तमाकृष्य हलाग्रेण बल्वलं गगनेचरम् ।

मुसलेनाहनत् क्रुद्धो मूर्ध्नि ब्रह्मद्रुहं बल: ॥५॥


तम्-आकृष्य हल-अग्रेण
him pulling, by the plough's front end,
बल्वलम् गगने-चरम्
Balavala, in the sky coursing,
मुसलेन-अहनत् क्रुद्ध:
with the pestle hit in a rage,
मूर्ध्नि ब्रह्म-द्रुहम् बल:
on the head, him, the Braahmana's enemy, Balaraama

Him, coursing in the sky, Balaraama drew with the front end of His plough, and in a fit of rage hit the enemy of the Braahmana's with His pestle, on the head.


सोऽपतद् भुवि निर्भिन्नललाटोऽसृक् समुत्सृजन् ।

मुञ्चन्नार्तस्वरं शैलो यथा वज्रहतोऽरुण: ॥६॥


स:-अपतत् भुवि निर्भिन्न-ललाट:-
he fell, on the ground, split forehead,
असृक्-समुत्सृजन्
blood flowing,
मुञ्चन्-आर्त-स्वरम्
letting out a cry
शैल: यथा वज्र-हत:-अरुण:
mountain just as by thunder struck red

He fell on the ground with his forehead split, blood flowing, letting out a cry, just like a red mountain struck by thunder.


संस्तुत्य मुनयो रामं प्रयुज्यावितथाशिष: ।

अभ्यषिञ्चन् महाभागा वृत्रघ्नं विबुधा यथा ॥७॥


संस्तुत्य मुनय: रामम्
praising, the sages, Balaraama,
प्रयुज्य-अवितथ-आशिष:
extending unfailing blessings,
अभ्यषिञ्चन् महाभागा:
sprinkled water, the blessed,
वृत्रघ्नम् विबुधा: यथा
Vritraasura's killer, (Indra) the gods

The blessed sages praised Balaraama, extended their unfailing blessing and sprinkled holy water on Him, just as the gods had done for Indra, the killer of Vritraasura.


वैजयन्तीं ददुर्मालां श्रीधामाम्लानपङ्कजाम् ।

रामाय वाससी दिव्ये दिव्यान्याभरणानि च ॥८॥


वैजयन्तीम् ददुर्म:-मालाम्
Vaijayanti, gave garland,
श्री-धाम-अम्लान-पङ्कजाम्
of beauty the storehouse, unfading lotuses,
रामाय वाससी दिव्ये
to Balaraama clothes divine,
दिव्यानि-अभरणानि च
divine and ornaments

They gave to Balaraama, a Vaijayanti garland of unfading lotuses, the store house of beauty, and two divine clothes, and divine ornaments.


अथ तैरभ्यनुज्ञात: कौशिकीमेत्य ब्राह्मणै: ।

स्नात्वा सरोवरमगाद् यत: सरयुरास्रवत् ॥९॥


अथ तै:-अभ्यनुज्ञात:
then by them permitted,
कौशिकीम्-एत्य ब्राह्मणै:
to Kaushiki reaching, with the Braahmanas
स्नात्वा सरोवरम्-अगात्
bathed, to the lake went
यत: सरयु:-अस्रवत्
from where Sarayu emanates

Balaraama with the Braahmanas took permission of the sages and reached the Kaushiki river. Having bathed in that, he proceeded to the lake from where the Sarayu river emanates.


अनुस्रोतेन सरयूं प्रयागमुपगम्य स: ।

स्नात्वा सन्तर्प्य देवादीन् जगाम पुलहाश्रमम् ॥१०॥


अनुस्रोतेन सरयूम्
following the lake and the Sarayu,
प्रयागम्-उपगम्य स:
to Prayaaga having reached He,
स्नात्वा सन्तर्प्य देव-आदीन्
having bathed, offered water to the gods etc.,
जगाम पुलह-आश्रमम्
went to Pulaha's hermitage

After the lake, following the course of the river Saryu, he reached Prayaaga. Having bathed there, and having offered water to the gods manes, etc., he went to the hermitage of Pulaha.


गोमतीं गन्डकीं स्नात्वा विपाशां शोण आप्लुत: ।

गयां गत्वा पितृनिष्ट्वा गङ्गासागरसङ्गमे ॥११॥


गोमतीम् गन्डकीम् स्नात्वा
in Gomati, Gandaki bathing,
विपाशाम् शोण आप्लुत:
in Vipaashaa Shona plunging,
गयाम् गत्वा पितृन्-इष्ट्वा
to Gayaa went, the mane propitiating
गङ्गा-सागर-सङ्गमे
to Ganga and the sea merge

He bathed in the rivers Gomati, Gandaki, and plunged in the rivers Vipaashaa and Shona. Then He went to Gaya and to the merging point of Ganga and the sea, and propitiated the manes.


उपस्पृश्य महेन्द्राद्रौ राम दृष्ट्वाभिवाद्य च ।

सप्तगोदावरीं वेणां पम्पां भीमरथीं तत: ॥१२॥


उपस्पृश्य महेन्द्र-अद्रौ
bathing, there, on the Mahendra mountain,
राम दृष्ट्वा-अभिवाद्य च
Parashuraama met, and greeted,
सप्त-गोदावरीम् वेणाम्
the seven branches of Godaavari, Venaa,
पम्पाम् भीमरथीम् तत:
Pampaa, Bheemarathi, after that

Bathing there, He went to the Mahendra mountain and met and greeted Parashuraama. Then he bathed in the seven branches of Godaavari, and after that in the rivers, Venaa, Pampaa, and Bheemarathi.


स्कन्दं दृष्ट्वा ययौ राम: श्रीशैलं गिरिशालयम् ।

द्रविडेषु महापुण्यं दृष्ट्वाद्रिं वेङ्कटं प्रभु: ॥१३॥


स्कन्दम् दृष्ट्वा ययौ राम:
Lord Kaartikeya, having visited, went Balaraama
श्रीशैलम् गिरिश-आलयम्
to Shreeshaila, of Shankara the abode,
द्रविडेषु महा-पुण्यम्
for the Dravida most holy,
दृष्ट्वा-अद्रिम् वेङ्कटम् प्रभु:
then saw the mountain Venkata, The Lord

Balaraama then visited the temple of Kaartikeya, and then went to the abode of Shankara, Shreeshaila, then The Lord went to the most holy for the Dravida, the mountain Venkata.


कामकोष्णीं पुरीं काञ्चीं कावेरीं च सरिद्वराम् ।

श्रीरङ्गाख्यं महापुण्यं यत्र सन्निहितो हरि: ॥१४॥


कामकोष्णीम् पुरीम् काञ्चीम्
to Kaama-kaanchi, city, Vishnu-kaanchee
कावेरीम् च सरित्-वराम्
Kaaveri and the river holy,
श्रीरङ्ग-आख्यम् महा-पुण्यम्
to Shreerangam named most auspicious
यत्र सन्निहित: हरि:
where dwells Shree Hari

Then He went to the cities of Siva-kaanchi and Vishnu-kaanchi, then to the most holy river Kaaveri. Then He went to the auspicious Shreerangam where Vishnu dwells eternally.


ऋषभाद्रिं हरे: क्षेत्रं दक्षिणां मथुरां तथा ।

सामुद्रं सेतुमगमन्महापातकनाशनम् ॥१५॥


ऋषभ-अद्रिम् हरे: क्षेत्रम्
to the Rishabha mountain, Vishnu's land,
दक्षिणाम् मथुराम् तथा
to the southern Mathuraa and,
सामुद्रम् सेतुम्-अगमत्-
to the sea's bridge, went
महापातक-नाशनम्
great sins' nullifier

He then went to the land of Vishnu, the mount Rishabha, then, to the Mathuraa in the south, and to the Raameshwaram Setu, the bridge in the sea, which nullifies the greatest of sins.


तत्रायुतमदाद् धेनूर्ब्राह्मणेभ्यो हलायुध: ।

कृतमालां ताम्रपर्णीं मलयं च कुलाचलम् ॥१६॥


तत्र-अयुतम्-अदात् धेनू:-
there ten thousand gave cows
ब्राह्मणेभ्य: हलायुध:
to the Braahmanas, The plough wielder
कृतमालाम् ताम्रपर्णीम्
to Kritamaalaa, Taamraparnee,
मलयम् च कुलाचलम्
Malaya, and to Kulaachala

There, The plough wielder, Balaraama, gave ten thousand cows to the Braahmanas. Then He went to Kritamaalaa, Taamraparnee, Malaya, and to Kulaachala.


तत्रागस्त्यं समासीनं नमस्कृत्याभिवाद्य च ।

योजितस्तेन चाशीर्भिरनुज्ञातो गतोऽर्णवम् ।

दक्षिणं तत्र कन्याख्यां दुर्गां देवीं ददर्श स: ॥१७॥


तत्र-अगस्त्यम् सम्-आसीनम्
there, Agastya seated
नमस्कृत्य-अभिवाद्य च
bowed to and honoured,
योजित:-तेन च-आशीर्भि:-
directed by him, and with blessings,
अनुज्ञात: गत:-अर्णवम्
permitted, went to the sea,
दक्षिणम् तत्र कन्याख्याम्
to the south there, Kanyaa named
दुर्गाम् देवीम् ददर्श स:
Durga Goddess, saw He

There, He saw Agastya seated, and bowed to him and honoured him. Then, blessed by him and directed and permitted by him, He went towards the sea, towards south, and saw the Goddess Durga, named as Kanyaa.


तत: फाल्गुनमासाद्य पञ्चाप्सरसमुत्तमम् ।

विष्णु: सन्निहितो यत्र स्नात्वास्पर्शद् गवायुतम् ॥१८॥


तत: फाल्गुनम्-आसाद्य
then, to Phaalguna reached,
पञ्च-अप्सरसम्-उत्तमम्
the Pancha-apsarasa, the excellent,
विष्णु: सन्निहित: यत्र
Vishnu's abode is where,
स्नात्वा-अस्पर्शत् गवा-अयुतम्
bathed, and gifted cows ten thousand

Then, He reached the Phaalguna Teertha, and to where Vishnu's abode is, the excellent Pancha-apsarasa lake. Bathing in its water, He gifted away ten thousand cows.


ततोऽभिव्रज्य भगवान् केरलांस्तु त्रिगर्तकान् ।

गोकर्णाख्यं शिवक्षेत्रं सान्निध्यं यत्र धूर्जटे: ॥१९॥


तत:-अभिव्रज्य भगवान्
then going through, The Lord,
केरलान्-तु त्रिगर्तकान्
Kerala, indeed, Trigartaka,
गोकर्ण-आख्यम् शिव-क्षेत्रम्
to Gokarna named Shiva's land
सान्निध्यम् यत्र धूर्जटे:
abode where is of Shiva

Then, The Lord going through Kerala, and Trigartaka indeed, went to the land of Shiva called Gokarna, where there is the abode of Shiva.


आर्यां द्वैपायनीं दृष्ट्वा शूर्पारकमगाद् बल: ।

तापीं पयोष्णीं निर्विन्ध्यामुपस्पृश्याथ दण्डकम् ॥२०॥


आर्याम् द्वैपायनीम् दृष्ट्वा
Goddess Aarya, in an island, seeing,
शूर्पारकम्-अगाद् बल:
to Shoorpaaraka went Balaraama,
तापीम् पयोष्णीम् निर्विन्ध्याम्-
in Taapi, Payoshnee, Nirvindhyaa
उपस्पृश्य-अथ दण्डकम्
having bathed, then to Dandaka (went)

Balaraama saw the Goddess Aarya in the island, and went to Shoorpaaraka. Then He bathed in the rivers Taapi, Payoshnee and Nirvindhyaa, and proceeded to the Dandaka forest.


प्रविश्य रेवामगमद् यत्र माहिष्मती पुरी ।

मनुतीर्थमुपस्पृश्य प्रभासं पुनरागमत् ॥२१॥


प्रविश्य रेवाम्-अगमत्-
entered Narmadaa, then went to
यत्र माहिष्मती पुरी
where Maahishmatee city is,
मनु-तीर्थम्-उपस्पृश्य
in Manu Teertha bathed,
प्रभासम् पुन:-आगमत्
to Prabhaasa again came

He then entered the Narmadaa river, and went to the city of Maahishmatee and bathed in the Manu Tirth and came back to Prabhaasa.


श्रुत्वा द्विजै: कथ्यमानं कुरुपाण्डवसंयुगे ।

सर्वराजन्यनिधनं भारं मेने हृतं भुव: ॥२२॥


श्रुत्वा द्विजै: कथ्यमानम्
on hearing from the Braahmanas, being told of
कुरु-पाण्डव-संयुगे
in the Kurus and Paandavas' battle,
सर्व-राजन्य-निधनम्
all the kings killed,
भारम् मेने हृतम् भुव:
the burden took as removed of the earth

On hearing from the Braahmanas that in the terrible battle between the Kauravaas and Paandavas, almost all the kings were killed, He felt that the burden of the earth was relieved.


स भीमदुर्योधनयोर्गदाभ्यां युध्यतोर्मृधे।

वारयिष्यन् विनशनं जगाम यदुनन्दन: ॥२३॥


स: भीम-दुर्योधनयो:-
He, of Bheema and Duryodhana
गदाभ्याम् युध्यतो:-मृधे
with maces fighting in the battle,
वारयिष्यन् विनशनम्
to prevent the destruction,
जगाम यदुनन्दन:
went The Delight of the Yadus

He, The Delight of the Yadus, went to prevent the destruction, imminent to be caused by the fight of Bheema and Duryodhana with the maces, in the battle.


युधिष्ठिरस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा यमौ कृष्णार्जुनावपि ।

अभिवाद्याभवंस्तूष्णीं किं विवक्षुरिहागत: ॥२४॥


युधिष्ठिर:-तु तम् दृष्ट्वा
Yudhishthira, certainly, Him seeing,
यमौ कृष्ण-अर्जुनौ-अपि
Nakula and Sahadeva, Krishna Arjuna also,
अभिवाद्य-अभवत्-तूष्णीम्
greeting (Him) became quiet
किम्-विवक्षु:-इह-आगत:
what wanting to say here has come

Seeing Him, certainly, Yudhishthira, Nakula and Sahadeva, Krishna Arjuna also, greeted Him and kept silent, thinking what He wanted to say.


गदापाणी उभौ दृष्ट्वा संरब्धौ विजयैषिणौ ।

मण्डलानि विचित्राणि चरन्ताविदमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥


गदा-पाणी उभौ दृष्ट्वा
mace in hand both, seeing
संरब्धौ विजय-ऐषिणौ
enraged, victory seeking
मण्डलानि विचित्राणि
feet strange
चरन्तौ-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
performing, this said

He saw them both with mace in hand, enraged, seeking victory, performing strange feet, to them, He said this,…


युवां तुल्यबलौ वीरौ हे राजन् हे वृकोदर ।

एकं प्राणाधिकं मन्ये उतैकं शिक्षयाधिकम् ॥२६॥


युवाम् तुल्य-बलौ वीरौ
you both are equal in power, O Warriors!
हे राजन् हे वृकोदर
O King! O Bheema!
एकम् प्राण-अधिकम् मन्ये
one is in power exceeding, I Believe,
उत-एकम् शिक्षया-अधिकम्
whereas, one in the skill more

'O King Duryodhana! O Bheema! Both of you warriors are equal in power. Yet, I believe that Bheema exceeds in power, and Duryodhana has better skill in the mace wielding.'


तस्मादेकतरस्येह युवयो: समवीर्ययो: ।

न लक्ष्यते जयोऽन्यो वा विरमत्वफलो रण: ॥२७॥


तस्मात्-एकतरस्य-इह
therefore, of one better, here,
युवयो: सम-वीर्ययो:
of you both, of equal power,
न लक्ष्यते जय:-अन्य: वा
is not seen a sign of victory, defeat or,
विरमतु-अफल: रण:
may it stop, the fruitless combat

Therefore, here, in this combat, both of you being of equal in strength, the chance of one of you being the better, or of victory or of defeat is not seen. So may this fruitless combat be stopped.


न तद्वाक्यं जगृहतुर्बद्धवैरौ नृपार्थवत् ।

अनुस्मरन्तावन्योन्यं दुरुक्तं दुष्कृतानि च ॥२८॥


न तत्-वाक्यम् जगृहतु:-
not that advice, heeded
बद्ध-वैरौ: नृप-अर्थवत्
tied in enmity, O King! The beneficial,
अनुस्मरन्तौ-अन्योन्यम्
both remembering each others
दुरुक्तम् दुष्कृतानि च
derogatory words, offensive acts and

O King! Both of them tied in enmity, did not heed the beneficial advice. They just remembered the derogatory words and the offensive acts of each other.


दिष्टं तदनुमन्वानो रामो द्वारवतीं ययौ ।

उग्रसेनादिभि: प्रीतैर्ज्ञातिभि: समुपागत: ॥२९॥


दिष्टम् तत्-अनुमन्वान:
providence that considering,
राम: द्वारवतीम् ययौ
Balaraama to Dwaarakaa went
उग्रसेन-आदिभि: प्रीतै:-
by Ugrasena and others with delight,
ज्ञातिभि: समुपागत:
relatives welcomed

Balaraama considered that as providence, and went away to Dwaarakaa. There He was welcomed by Ugrasena and other relatives, with delight.


तं पुनर्नैमिषं प्राप्तमृषयोऽयाजयन् मुदा ।

क्रत्वङ्गं क्रतुभि: सर्वैर्निवृत्ताखिलविग्रहम् ॥३०॥


तम् पुन:-नैमिषम् प्राप्तम्-
Him again Naimishaaranya having reached,
ऋषय:-अयाजयन् मुदा
the sages, made Him sacrifice with pleasure,
क्रतु-अङ्गम् क्रतुभि: सर्वै:-
the sacrifice embodied, (Balaraama) with sacrifices all
निवृत्त-अखिल-विग्रहम्
retired from all hostilities

Balaraama had retired from all hostilities, and had gone back to Naimishaaranya. There, the sages with pleasure made Him perform all the sacrifices, even though He Himself is embodied sacrifices.


तेभ्यो विशुद्धविज्ञानं भगवान् व्यतरद् विभु: ।

येनैवात्मन्यदो विश्वमात्मानं विश्वगं विदु: ॥३१॥


तेभ्य: विशुद्ध-विज्ञानम्
to them pure wisdom
भगवान् व्यतरत् विभु:
The Lord, presented The Almighty,
येन-एव-आत्मनि-अद: विश्वम्-
by which only, in The Self this universe,
आत्मानम् विश्व-गम् विदु:
The Self in the universe permeating, realized

The All mighty Lord Balaraama presented to the sages the pure wisdom, by which alone, they realized that this universe is in The Self, and that the Self is permeated by the universe.


स्वपत्न्यावभृथस्नातो ज्ञातिबन्धुसुहृद्वृत: ।

रेजे स्वज्योत्स्नयेवेन्दु: सुवासा: सुष्ठ्वलङ्कृत: ॥३२॥


स्व-पत्न्या-अवभृथस्नात:
with His wives, did the concluding bathing,
ज्ञाति-बन्धु-सुहृत्-वृत:
with the caste relatives, friends accompanied
रेजे स्व-ज्योत्स्नया-इव-इन्दु:
shone in His own lustre, like the Moon,
सुवासा: सुष्ठु-अलङ्कृत:
with good clothes, well ornamented

He took the concluding bath along with His wives, caste relatives, and friends, and adorned in good clothes and ornaments, shone in His own lustre, like the Moon.


ईदृग्विधान्यसंख्यानि बलस्य बलशालिन: ।

अनन्तस्याप्रमेयस्य मायामर्त्यस्य सन्ति हि ॥३३॥


ईदृक्-विधानि-असंख्यानि
such like, innumerable
बलस्य बलशालिन:
of Balaraama, The valorous,
अनन्तस्य-अप्रमेयस्य
The Infinite, beyond comprehension,
माया-मर्त्यस्य सन्ति हि
sportingly taken human form, exist indeed

Exploits of such nature, of The Valorous, The Infinite, Balaraama, of incomprehensible nature, Who sportingly took the human form, are innumerable.


योऽनुस्मरेत रामस्य कर्माण्यद्भुतकर्मण: ।

सायं प्रातरनन्तस्य विष्णो: स दयितो भवेत् ॥३४॥


य:-अनुस्मरेत रामस्य
one who remembers Balaraama's
कर्माणि-अद्भुत-कर्मण:
exploits, of the indescribable acts
सायम् प्रात:-अनन्तस्य
evening morning of The Infinite,
विष्णो: स: दयित: भवेत्
of Vishnu he dear becomes

In the evening and morning, one who remembers the exploits of The Infinite Balaraama of indescribable acts, he becomes dear to Lord Vishnu.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे बलदेवतीर्थयात्रानिरूपणं नाम एकोनाशीतितम: अध्याय: ॥७९॥


Thus ends the seventy-ninth discourse entitled 'An account of the pilgrimage of Baladeva', in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
