राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
भगवन् यानि चान्यानि मुकुन्दस्य महात्मन: ।

वीर्याण्यनन्तवीर्यस्य श्रोतुमिच्छामहे प्रभो ॥१॥


भगवन् यानि च-अन्यानि
O Holy sage! Those and other
मुकुन्दस्य महात्मन:
of Shree Krishna, the high Souled
वीर्याणि-अनन्त-वीर्यस्य
exploits, of the infinite Power,
श्रोतुम्-इच्छामहे प्रभो
to hear desire, O lord!

O Holy sage, O lord! We wish to hear about those other exploits of the High Souled Shree Krishna, of Infinite power.


को नु श्रुत्वासकृद् ब्रह्मन्नुत्तमश्लोकसत्कथा: ।

विरमेत विशेषज्ञो विषन्न: काममार्गणै: ॥२॥


क: नु श्रुत्वा-असकृत् ब्रह्मन्-
who indeed, again and again, O Holy One!
उत्तम-श्लोक-सत्कथा:
of the highly Renowned's glorious sports,
विरमेत विशेषज्ञ:
will stop, the knower of their speciality,
विषन्न: काम-मार्गणै:
pierced by the desire's arrows

O Holy One! The beings are again and again pierced by the arrows of desires. Those who know of the speciality of the stories of the glorious sports of The Highly renowned Lord, how can they stop listening to them? Which are a relief from worldly sufferings.


सा वाग् यया तस्य गुणान् गृणीते करौ च तत्कर्मकरौ मनश्च ।

स्मरेद् वसन्तं स्थिरजङ्गमेषु शृणोति तत्पुण्यकथा: स कर्ण: ॥३॥


सा वाग् यया तस्य
that is the speech by which His
गुणान् गृणीते करौ च तत्-
praises sings, hands and His
कर्म-करौ मन:-च
service does, mind and
स्मरेत् वसन्तम्
which remembers, (Him) dwelling
स्थिर-जङ्गमेषु शृणोति
in immobile and mobile, hears,
तत्-पुण्यकथा: स: कर्ण:
His holy exploits, that is the ear

That speech is worthwhile which sings of His praises, those hands are worthwhile which do His service, that mind is worthwhile which constantly remembers Him, who dwells in the immobile and the mobile beings, and that ear is justified which hears of His holy exploits.


शिरस्तु तस्योभयलिङ्गमानमेत्तदेव यत् पश्यति तद् हि चक्षु: ।

अङ्गानि विष्णोरथ तज्जनानां पादोदकं यानि भजन्ति नित्यम् ॥४॥


शिर:-तु तस्य-उभय-
head, indeed, His of both
लिङ्गमानम्-एतत्-तत्-एव
forms, this, Him alone
यत् पश्यति तत् हि चक्षु:
that looks as, that indeed is the eye,
अङ्गानि विष्णो:-अथ
the limbs, of Vishnu, then,
तत्-जनानाम् पाद-उदकम्
of His devotees feet water
यानि भजन्ति नित्यम्
which imbibe daily

That head is worthwhile which bows to both His forms, the mobile and the immobile, that eye is worthy which sees everything as Himself, and those limbs are worthwhile which are sprinkled daily with the feet water of Vishnu and His devotees.


सूत उवाच -
Shree Soota said -
विष्णुरातेन सम्पृष्टो भगवान् बादरायणि: ।

वासुदेवे भगवति निमग्नहृदयोऽब्रवीत् ॥५॥


विष्णुरातेन सम्पृष्ट:

The mighty Shuka
वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva, The Lord
निमग्न-हृदय:-अब्रवीत्
merged hearted, said,

When Pareekshita asked the mighty sage Shuka, his heart was completely merged in The Lord Vaasudeva, as he said,….


शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कृष्णस्यासीत् सखा कश्चिद् ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मवित्तम: ।

विरक्त इन्द्रियार्थेषु प्रशानतात्मा जितेन्द्रिय: ॥६॥


कृष्णस्य-आसीत् सखा कश्चित्
of Krishna was friend one,
ब्राह्मण: ब्रह्म-वित्तम:
Braahmana, of the Brahman knowers the best,
विरक्त: इन्द्रिय-अर्थेषु
detached to sense objects,
प्रशान्त-आत्मा जित-इन्द्रिय:
very peaceful soul, having control of the senses

A Braahmana was a very dear friend of Krishna. A very peaceful soul, he was detached to sense objects, and had full control of his senses.


यदृच्छयोपपन्नेन वर्तमानो गृहाश्रमी ।

तस्य भार्या कुचैलस्य क्षुत्क्षामा च तथाविधा ॥७॥


यदृच्छया-उपपन्नेन
by providence obtained
वर्तमान: गृहाश्रमी
lived, the householder,
तस्य भार्या कुचैलस्य
his wife, of the ill-clad,
क्षुत्-क्षामा च तथा-विधा
by hunger lean, and like that only

He, a householder, lived by whatever he obtained by Providence. He was ill-clad, and his wife was lean due to starvation, but she was like him only, in nature.


पतिव्रता पतिं प्राह म्लायता वदनेन सा ।

दरिद्रा सीदमाना सा वेपमानाभिगम्य च ॥८॥


पतिव्रता पतिम् प्राह
the noble lady, to her husband said,
म्लायता वदनेन सा
with a worn out face, she,
दरिद्रा सीदमाना सा
by poverty suffering, she,
वेपमाना-अभिगम्य च
shivering, going close to

The noble lady, she with a worn out face, suffering due to poverty, shivering, she went close to her husband and said to him,….


ननु ब्रह्मन् भगवत: सखा साक्षाच्छ्रिय: पति: ।

ब्रह्मण्यश्च शरण्यश्च भगवान् सात्वतर्षभ: ॥९॥


ननु ब्रह्मन् भगवत: सखा
surely, O Holy One! your friend
साक्षात्-श्रिय: पति:
undoubtedly, Laxmi's consort,
ब्रह्मण्य:-च शरण्य:-च
fond of Braahmanas, and helper of shelter seekers, and
भगवान् सात्वत-ऋषभ:
The Lord of the Yadu's the scion

'O Holy One! Surely, Laxmi's consort undoubtedly is your friend, He is fond of the Braahmanas, and is keen to help the shelter seekers, indeed He is Lord Krishna, the scion of the Yadus.'


तमुपैहि महाभाग साधूनां च परायणम् ।

दास्यति द्रविणं भूरि सीदते ते कुटुम्बिने ॥१०॥


तम्-उपैहि महाभाग
Him approach, O Blessed One!
साधूनाम् च परायणम्
of the sages and is the resort
दास्यति द्रविणम्
will give wealth
भूरि सीदते ते कुटुम्बिने
to much suffering is your family

'O Blessed One! Do approach Him, he is the resort of the sages, He will give you wealth as you and your family are suffering so much.'


आस्तेऽधुना द्वारवत्यां भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकेश्वर: ।

स्मरत: पादकमलमात्मानमपि यच्छति ।

किंन्वर्थकामान् भजतो नात्यभीष्टाञ्जगद्गुरु: ॥११॥


आस्ते-अधुना द्वारवत्याम्
resides, now, in Dwaarakaa
भोज-वृष्णि-अन्धक-ईश्वर:
of the Bhojas, Vrishnees, Andhakas, The Lord
स्मरत: पाद-कमलम्-
one who remembers, feet lotuses,
आत्मानम्-अपि यच्छति
Himself even gives away,
किम्-नु-अर्थ-कामान् भजत:
what of the objects of desire seeking,
न-अति-अभीष्टान्-जगद्गुरु:
not vey desireable, The Preceptor of the universe

He, The Lord of the Bhojas, Vrishnees, Andhakas, resides now in Dwaarakaa. He who remembers His lotus feet, He, The Preceptor of the universe, even gives away Himself, what of the objects of desires seeked for, which are anyway not that desireable.


स एवं भार्यया विप्रो बहुश: प्रार्थितो मृदु ।

अयं हि परमो लाभ उत्तमश्लोकदर्शनम् ॥१२॥


स: एवम् भार्यया विप्र:
he, thus, by the wife the Braahmana,
बहुश: प्रार्थित: मृदु:
many times, entreating softly,
अयम् हि परम: लाभ:
this itself a great gain
उत्तमश्लोक-दर्शनम्
of The highly renowned 's sight

He, the Braahmana, was thus requested by his wife, many times, entreating softly. He thought, 'This, in itself will be a great gain, getting to meet The Highly renowned Krishna.'


इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा गमनाय मतिं दधे ।

अप्यस्त्युपायनं किञ्चिद् गृहे कल्याणि दीयताम् ॥१३॥


इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा
this thinking, in the mind,
गमनाय मतिम् दधे
to go mind made up
अपि-अस्ति-उपायनम् किञ्चिद्
is there gift any
गृहे कल्याणि दीयताम्
in the house, O Gentle One! Give

Thinking so, he made up his mind to go, and said, 'O Gentle One! Is there anything in the house for a gift? Do give.'


याचित्वा चतुरो मुष्टीन् विप्रान् पृथुकतण्डुलान् ।

चैलखण्डेन तान् बद्ध्वा भर्त्रे प्रादादुपायनम् ॥१४॥


याचित्वा चतुर: मुष्टीन्
begging for four fist fulls
विप्रान् पृथुकतण्डुलान्
of the Braahmanas, beaten rice,
चैल-खण्डेन तान् बद्ध्वा
in a rag piece them tying
भर्त्रे प्रादात्-उपायनम्
to her husband gave for gifting

She begged of the Braahmanas, and attained four fistfuls of beaten rice. She tied them in a piece of a rag, and gave it to her husband as gift to be given.


स तानादाय विप्राग्र्य: प्रययौ द्वारकां किल ।

कृष्णसन्दर्शनं मह्यं कथं स्यादिति चिन्तयन् ॥१५॥


स: तान्-आदाय विप्र-अग्र्य:
he, them taking, the Braahmana foremost,
प्रययौ द्वारकाम् किल
went, to Dwaarakaa indeed,
कृष्ण-सन्दर्शनम् मह्यम्
Krishna's meeting with me,
कथम् स्यात्-इति चिन्तयन्
how will be, this worrying of

He, the foremost of the Braahmanas, took those, beaten rice, and set out for Dwaarakaa, indeed worrying constantly how he will get to meet Shree Krishna.


त्रीणि गुल्मान्यतीयाय तिस्र: कक्षाश्च स द्विज: ।

विप्रोऽगम्यान्धकवृष्णीनां गृहेष्वच्युतधर्मिणाम् ॥१६॥


त्रीणि गुल्मानि-अतीयाय
three camps crossing,
तिस्र: कक्षा:-च स: द्विज:
three boundaries, and that Braahmana,
विप्र:-अगम्य-अन्धक-वृष्णीनाम्
Braahmana, difficult to access of Andhakas and Vrishnees'
गृहेषु-अच्युत-धर्मिणाम्
houses, of The infinite's devotees,

That Braahmana crossed three camps of guards, and three boundaries. The Braahmana then reached the houses of the Andhakas and the Vrishnees, which are difficult to be accessed.


गृहं द्व्यष्टसहस्राणां महिषीणां हरेर्द्विज: ।

विवेशैकतमं श्रीमद् ब्रह्मानन्दं गतो यथा ॥१७॥


गृहम् द्वि-अष्ट-सहस्राणाम्
the houses sixteen thousand,
महिषीणाम् हरे:-द्विज:
of the queens of Shree Hari, the Braahmana
विवेश-एकतमम् श्रीमद्
entered, the one of highest splendour,
ब्रह्मानन्दम् गत: यथा
blissful joy reached like

The Braahmana entered the sixteen thousand houses of the queens of Shree Krishna. When he reached the one of the highest splendour, he felt as if he had reached the joy of blissfulness.


तं विलोक्याच्युतो दूरात् प्रियापर्यङ्कमास्थित: ।

सहसोत्थाय चाभ्येत्य दोर्भ्यां पर्यग्रहीन्मुदा ॥१८॥


तम् विलोक्य-अच्युत: दूरात्
him seeing,
प्रिया-पर्यङ्कम्-आस्थित:
on His beloved bed seated,
सहसा-उत्थाय च-अभ्येत्य
suddenly getting up, and approaching (him)
दोर्भ्याम् पर्यग्रहीत्-मुदा
with both arms embraced with joy

The Infinite Lord, seated on His beloved's bed, saw him from far. He arose suddenly and approaching him, embraced him with both His arms, with joy.


सख्यु: प्रियस्य विप्रर्षेरङ्गसङ्गातिनिर्वृत: ।

प्रीतो व्यमुञ्चदब्बिन्दून् नेत्राभ्याम् पुष्करेक्षण: ॥१९॥


सख्यु: प्रियस्य विप्रर्षे:-
of the friend dear Braahmana sage's
अङ्ग-सङ्ग-अति-निर्वृत:
by body's touch, very delighted,
प्रीत: व्यमुञ्चत्-अप्-बिन्दून्
full of love, shed tear drops,
नेत्राभ्याम् पुष्करेक्षण:
from the eyes, The Lotus-eyed

The Lotus-eyed Lord was very much delighted by the touch of the body of the dear friend, the Braahmana sage, and shed tears of joy from His eyes.


अथोपवेश्य पर्यङ्के स्वयं सख्यु: समर्हणम् ।

उपहृत्यावनिज्यास्य पादौ पादावनेजनी: ॥२०॥


अथ-उपवेश्य पर्यङ्के
then seating (him) on the bed,
स्वयम् सख्यु: समर्हणम्
Himself for the friend, worship articles
उपहृत्य-अवनिज्य-अस्य
bringing, washed his feet,
पादौ पाद-अवनेजनी:
the feet water sprinkled on Himself

Then, seating him on the bed, He brought the worship articles for the friend Himself. Then, He washed his two feet, and sprinkled the feet water on Himself.


अग्रहीच्छिरसा राजन् भगवाँल्लोकपावन: ।

व्यलिम्पद् दिव्यगन्धेन चन्दनागुरुकुङ्कुमै: ॥२१॥


अग्रहीत्-शिरसा राजन्
took on His head (that water), O King!
भगवान्-लोक-पावन:
The Lord, The Purifier of the world,
व्यलिम्पद् दिव्य-गन्धेन
smeared divine perfumed
चन्दन-अगुरु-कुङ्कुमै:
sandal, Aguru and saffron paste

O King! The Lord, The Purifier of the worlds, took that water on His head. Then He smeared the feet with a divine smelling paste of sandalwood, Aguru and saffron.


धूपै: सुरभिभिर्मित्रं प्रदीपावलिभिर्मुदा ।

अर्चित्वाऽऽवेद्य ताम्बूलं गां च स्वागतमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥


धूपै: सुरभिभि:-मित्रम्
with incenses scented, the friend
प्रदीपावलिभि:-मुदा
with lighted lamps rows, delightfully
अर्चित्वा-आवेद्य ताम्बूलम्
worshipped presenting beetle leaves
गाम् च स्वागतम्-अब्रवीत्
cow and greeting extended

Krishna delightfully worshipped His friend with scented incenses, rows of lighted lamps, offered to him beetle leaves and cows and then extended welcome greeting.


कुचैलं मलिनं क्षामं द्विजं धमनिसंततम् ।

देवी पर्यचरत् साक्षाच्चामरव्यजनेन वै ॥२३॥


कुचैलम् मलिनम् क्षामम्
the ill clad, dirty, lean
द्विजम् धमनि-संततम्
Braahmana, veins visible,
देवी पर्यचरत् साक्षात्-
the Queen served, herself
चामर-व्यजनेन वै
with cowry swaying indeed

The Queen Rukmini, herself served the ill clad, unclean, lean Braahmana, with his veins showing, by swaying the cowry on him.


अन्त:पुरजनो दृष्ट्वा कृष्णेनामलकीर्तिना ।

विस्मितोऽभूदतिप्रीत्या अवधूतं सभाजितम् ॥२४॥


अन्त:पुर-जन: दृष्ट्वा
the inner chamber people seeing
कृष्णेन-अमल-कीर्तिना
by Krishna of spotless fame
विस्मित:-अभूत्-अति-प्रीत्या
amazed were, with great love,
अवधूतम् सभाजितम्
the ill-clad worshipped

The people of the inner chamber were amazed to see the ill-clad being worshipped with great love, by Krishna of spotless fame.


किमनेन कृतं पुण्यमवधूतेन भिक्षुणा ।

श्रिया हीनेन लोकेऽस्मिन् गर्हितेनाधमेन च ॥२५॥


किम्-अनेन कृतम् पुण्यम्-
what by him were done meritorious deed,
अवधूतेन भिक्षुणा
by the ill clad, beggar,
श्रिया हीनेन लोके-अस्मिन्
unfortunate, in world this,
गर्हितेन्-अधमेन च
dispisable, lowly and

In this world, what meritorious deed was done by this ill clad, unfortunate, dispisable, lowly beggar?


योऽसौ त्रिलोकगुरुणा श्रीनिवासेन सम्भृत: ।

पर्यङ्कस्थां श्रियं हित्वा परिष्वक्तोऽग्रजो यथा ॥२६॥


य:-असौ त्रिलोक-गुरुणा
that he, by the three worlds' Preceptor
श्रीनिवासेन सम्भृत:
of Shree The Abode, welcomed,
पर्यङ्क-स्थाम् श्रियम् हित्वा
on the bed seated Laxmi ignoring,
परिष्वक्त:-अग्रज: यथा
was embraced elder brother like

In that, he was most warmly welcomed by The Preceptor of the three worlds, The Abode of Shree, Himself, Who ignored Rukmini Laxmi Herself, seated on the bed , and was embraced by Him like an elder brother.


कथयाञ्चक्रतुर्गाथा: पूर्वा गुरुकुले सतो: ।

आत्मनो ललिता राजन् करौ गृह्य परस्परम् ॥२७॥


कथयान्-चक्रतु:-गाथा:
to relate started the stories
पूर्वा: गुरुकुले सतो:
old, in Gurukul living,
आत्मन: ललिता: राजन्
own sweet, O King!
करौ गृह्य परस्परम्
hands holding each others

O King! they held each others hand and started relating their own old sweet tales when They were in the Gurukul.


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
अपि ब्रह्मन् गुरुकुलाद् भवता लब्ध दक्षिणात् ।

समावृत्तेन धर्मज्ञ भार्योढा सदृशी न वा ॥२८॥


अपि ब्रह्मन् गुरुकुलात्
is it, O pious Braahmana, from Gurukul
भवता लब्ध दक्षिणात्
by you, having given the Preceptor's fees,
समावृत्तेन धर्मज्ञ
returned, the knower of righteousness,
भार्या-ऊढा सदृशी न वा
wife married, (you) equal not or

'O pious Braahmana, after having given the preceptor's fees, and having returned from Gurukul, you, the knower of righteousness, have married a wife equal to you, or not?'


प्रायो गृहेषु ते चित्तमकामविहतं तथा ।

नैवातिप्रीयसे विद्वान् धनेषु विदितं हि मे ॥२९॥


प्राय: गृहेषु ते चित्तम्-
mostly, in the house, your mind
अकाम-विहतम् तथा
by detachment endowed, and,
न-एव-अति-प्रीयसे विद्वान्
not even very dear, the realized
धनेषु विदितम् हि मे
in wealth, is known indeed to Me

Indeed, it is known to Me that your mind is mostly unattached to the house, as you are endowed with detachment, also that, for you who have realized the truth, wealth is not very dear to you.


केचित् कुर्वन्ति कर्माणि कामैरहतचेतस: ।

त्यजन्त: प्रकृतीर्दैवीर्यथाहं लोकसङ्ग्रहम् ॥३०॥


केचित् कुर्वन्ति कर्माणि
some do work
कामै:-अहत-चेतस:
by desires unswayed minds,
त्यजन्त: प्रकृती:-दैवी:-
shrugging the Nature's destiny,
यथा-अहम् लोक-सङ्ग्रहम्
like I, for the world's example

Some people act with minds unswayed by desires, and shrug the Natures destiny, or Maaya, like I do, for the sake of setting an example for the world.


कच्चिद् गुरुकुले वासं ब्रह्मन् स्मरसि नौ यत: ।

द्विजो विज्ञाय विज्ञेयं तमस: पारमश्नुते ॥३१॥


कच्चिद् गुरुकुले वासम्
(do you) ever remember the Gurukul stay
ब्रह्मन् स्मरसि नौ यत:
O Holy Braahmana! remember, from where,
द्विज: विज्ञाय विज्ञेयम्
a Braahmana comes to know the knowledgeable
तमस: पारम्-अश्नुते
the dark beyond enjoys

O Holy Braahmana! Do you ever remember our stay in the Gurukul, from where a Braahmana learns the knowledge, by which he reaches beyond the darkness of mundane existence and enjoys that state?


स वै सत्कर्मणां साक्षाद् द्विजातेरिह सम्भव: ।

आद्योऽङ्ग यत्राश्रमिणां यथाहं ज्ञानदो गुरु: ॥३२॥


स: वै-सत्-कर्मणाम् साक्षाद्
he indeed of good actions, directly
द्विजाते:-इह सम्भव:
of the Braahmana (is the preceptor) here, the father
आद्य:-अङ्ग यत्र-आश्रमिणाम्
is the first, O Dear! Where, people of Aashramas
यथा-अहम् ज्ञानद: गुरु:
like Me, the knowledge imparting preceptor

O Dear! Of The Braahmana's, the first preceptor, is directly the father, for the knowledge of right actions is the other preceptor, then the third is like Me, the preceptor for imparting the True Knowledge.


नन्वर्थकोविदा ब्रह्मन् वर्णाश्रमवतामिह ।

ये मया गुरुणा वाचा तरन्त्यञ्जो भवार्णवम् ॥३३॥


ननु-अर्थ-कोविदा: ब्रह्मन्
definitely, the interest knowers, O Holy One!
वर्ण-आश्रम-वताम्-इह
of the Varnas and Aashramas, here,
ये मया गुरुणा वाचा
who by Me Guru's teachings
तरन्ति-अञ्ज: भव-अर्णवम्
cross easily the mundane existence ocean

O Holy One! definitely, they are the worldly and other-worldly interest knowers, who placed in their respective Varnas and Aashramas, heed the teachings of preceptors like Myself, and so, easily cross the ocean of mundane existence.


नाहमिज्याप्रजातिभ्यां तपसोपशमेन वा ।

तुष्येयं सर्वभूतात्मा गुरुशुश्रूषया यथा ॥३४॥


न-अहम्-इज्या-प्रजातिभ्याम्
not I by sacrifice, study of scriptures,
तपसा-उपशमेन वा
austerities, self-control or,
तुष्येयम् सर्व-भूत-आत्मा
am pleased , of all the living beings The Self,
गुरु-शुश्रूषया यथा
by Guru's service as much

I, The Self of all the living beings, am not that satisfied by sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerities, or, self-control, as by the service of the Guru.


अपि न: स्मर्यते ब्रह्मन् वृत्तं निवसतां गुरौ ।

गुरुदारैश्चोदितानामिन्धनानयने क्वचित् ॥३५॥


अपि न: स्मर्यते ब्रह्मन्
do, us, you remember, O Good Braahmana!
वृत्तम् निवसताम् गुरौ
the incident, when living with the Guru
गुरु-दारै:-चोदितानाम्-
by Guru's wife, sent
इन्धन-आनयने क्वचित्
fuel to bring once

O Good Braahmana! Do you remember the incident, when while living with the Guru, we were sent by the Guru's wife to bring fuel.


प्रविष्टानां महारण्यमपर्तौ सुमहद् द्विज ।

वातवर्षमभूत्तीव्रं निष्ठुरा: स्तनयित्नव: ॥३६॥


प्रविष्टानाम् महा-अरण्यम्-
having entered a thick forest,
अप-ऋतौ सुमहद् द्विज
an unseasonal great, O Sage!
वात-वर्षम्-अभूत्-तीव्रम्
storm rain took place, violent
निष्ठुरा: स्तनयित्नव:
and unkindly thunder struck

O Sage! As we entered a thick forest, a great unseasonal storm and violent rain took place, and unkindly thunder struck.


सूर्यश्चास्तं गतस्तावत् तमसा चावृता दिश: ।

निम्नं कूलं जलमयं न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन ॥३७॥


सूर्य:-च-अस्तम् गत:-तावत्
the Sun and set, just then,
तमसा च-आवृता: दिश:
by darkness and covered the directions,
निम्नम् कूलम् जलमयम्

न प्राज्ञायत किञ्चन
not was known anything

Just then, the Sun set, and the directions were covered with darkness. The lower level of land was full of water, and nothing could be known.


वयं भृशं तत्र महानिलाम्बुभिर्निहन्यमाना मुहुरम्बु सम्प्लवे ।

दिशोऽविदन्तोऽथ परस्परं वने गृहीतहस्ता: परिबभ्रिमातुरा: ॥३८॥


वयम् भृशम् तत्र महा-अनिल-
we, very much, there, by the violent wind
अम्बुभि:-निहन्यमाना:
and water hit,
मुहु:-अम्बु सम्प्लवे
again and again in the water flood
दिश:-अविदन्त:-अथ
the directions not knowing, then,
परस्परम् वने गृहीत-हस्ता:
mutually, in the forest, holding hands,
परिबभ्रिम-आतुरा:
wandered confused

There, we were again and again hit by the very much violent wind and water, and did not know the direction because of the flooded water. We, then, mutually holding hands, wandered, utterly confused.


एतद् विदित्वा उदिते रवौ सान्दीपनिर्गुरु: ।

अन्वेषमाणो न: शिष्यानाचार्योऽपश्यदातुरान् ॥३९॥


एतद् विदित्वा उदिते रवौ
this knowing, on the rising of the Sun,
सान्दीपनि:-गुरु:
Sandeepani, the preceptor,
अन्वेषमाण: न: शिष्यान्-
searching us, the students,
आचार्य:-अपश्यत्-आतुरान्
the preceptor saw, bewildered

The preceptor, Sandeepani, knowing that we had not returned, came searching for us when the Sun arose. He saw us, the students, in a bewildered state.


अहो हे पुत्रका यूयमस्मदर्थेऽतिदु:खिता: ।

आत्मा वै प्राणिनां प्रेष्ठस्तमनादृत्य मत्परा: ॥४०॥


अहो हे पुत्रका: यूयम्-
’Oh! Dear boys! you both
अस्मत्-अर्थे-अति-दु:खिता:
for our sake have much suffered,
आत्मा वै प्राणिनाम् प्रेष्ठ:-
self, indeed for the beings is the dearest
तम्-अनादृत्य मत्-परा:
that overlooking, to me devoted

’Oh! Dear boys! Both of you have suffered much for our sake. Indeed the self is most dear to the beings. Overlooking that, you have been devoted to me.'


एतदेव हि सच्छिष्यै: कर्तव्यं गुरुनिष्कृतम् ।

यद् वै विशुद्धभावेन सर्वार्थात्मार्पणं गुरौ ॥४१॥


एतत्-एव हि सत्-शिष्यै:
this alone, surely by the sincere students
कर्तव्यम् गुरु-निष्कृतम्
should be done, for the teacher's debt repayment
यद् वै विशुद्ध-भावेन
that, certainly with a clear conscience
सर्व-अर्थ-आत्म-अर्पणम् गुरौ
all things and self also dedicates to the teacher

Surely, this alone is what a sincere student should do to repay the debt of the teacher, that, with a clear conscience he should give everything even himself for his teacher.


तुष्टोऽहं भो द्विजश्रेष्ठा: सत्या: सन्तु मनोरथा: ।

छन्दांस्ययातयामानि भवन्त्विह परत्र च ॥४२॥


तुष्ट:-अहम् भो द्विज-श्रेष्ठा:
satisfied am I, O of the Braahmana's the best!
सत्या: सन्तु मनोरथा:
true may be your desires
छन्दांसि-अयातयामानि
the Vedas in memory,
भवन्तु-इह परत्र च
may remain, here and hereafter

O You! the best of the Brahmanas! May all your desires be fulfilled. May you always remember the Vedas, here, and hereafter.


इत्थं विधान्यनेकानि वसतां गुरुवेश्मसु ।

गुरोरनुग्रहेणैव पुमान् पूर्ण: प्रशान्तये ॥४३॥


इत्थम् विधानि-अनेकानि
such like many
वसताम् गुरु-वेश्मसु
during the stay at Guru's house,
गुरो:-अनुग्रहेण-एव
by Guru's grace only
पुमान् पूर्ण: प्रशान्तये
a person is fulfilled and peaceful

Many incidents of this sort, happened during the stay at Guru's house. By the grace of Guru only, man is fulfilled and peaceful.


ब्राह्मण उवाच -
The Braahmana said -
किमस्माभिरनिर्वृत्तं देवदेव जगद्गुरो ।

भवता सत्यकामेन येषां वासो गुरावभूत् ॥४४॥


किम्-अस्माभि:-अनिर्वृत्तम्
what by us is not achieved
देव-देव जगत्-गुरो
O God of gods, O teacher of the world!
भवता सत्य-कामेन
by you, of unshaken resolve,
येषाम् वास: गुरौ-अभूत्
by whom was stay with the Guru happened

O God of gods, O teacher of the world! What remains to be achieved by us? In that, we, happened to stay with the you, The Guru, of unshaken resolve.


यस्यच्छन्दोमयं ब्रह्म देह आवपनं विभो ।

श्रेयसां तस्य गुरुषु वासोऽत्यन्तविडम्बनम् ॥४५॥


यस्य-छन्दोमयम् ब्रह्म
Whose Vedas, O Brahman!
देह आवपनम् विभो
body is the source, O Almighty!
श्रेयसाम् तस्य गुरुषु वास:-
to study that, in Guru's house living,
अत्यन्त-विडम्बनम्
is a great fallacy

O Brahman! Your body is the source of the Vedas, that, to learn, You went to live in the Guru's house, is a great fallacy.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे श्रीदामचरिते अशीतितम: अध्याय: ॥८०॥


Thus ends the eightieth discourse forming part of the Story of Sudaamaa, in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
