श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
तथानुगृह्य भगवान् गोपीनां स गुरुर्गति: ।
युधिष्ठिरमथापृच्छत् सर्वांश्च सुहृदोऽव्ययम् ॥१॥
तथा-अनुगृह्य भगवान्
thus gracing The Lord,
गोपीनाम् स: गुरु:-गति:
the Gopis, He the Preceptor, The Goal
युधिष्ठिरम्-अथ-अपृच्छत्
to Yudhishthira then asked,
सर्वान्-च सुहृद:-अव्ययम्
all and friends their well fare
Thus, The Lord, The Preceptor and The Goal of the teachings, for the Gopis, graced them. Then He asked Yudhishthira and all other friends of their well-fare.
त एवं लोकनाथेन परिपृष्टा: सुसत्कृता: ।
प्रत्यूचुर्हृष्टमनसस्तत्पादेक्षाहतांहस: ॥२॥
ते एवम् लोकनाथेन
they, thus, by The worlds' Lord,
परिपृष्टा: सुसत्कृता:
enquired, and honoured,
प्रत्यूचु:-ह्ष्ट-मनस:-
replied, with delighted minds,
तत्-पाद-ईक्षा-हत-अंहस:
by His feet's sight, rid of sins
They, who were enquired after, and honoured, and whose sins were rid by the sight of the feet of The Lord of the three worlds, replied with minds full of delight.
कुतोऽशिवं त्वच्चरणाम्बुजासवं महन्मनस्तो मुखनि:सृतं क्वचित् ।
पिबन्ति ये कर्णपुटैरलं प्रभो देहम्भृतां देहकृदस्मृतिच्छिदम् ॥३॥
कुत:-अशिवम् त्वत्-चरण-
where is inauspiciousness? Your feet
अम्बुज-आसवम् महत्-मनस्त:-
lotus nectar, in the exalted ones' minds,
मुख-नि:सृतम् क्वचित्
from their lips flowing at times,
पिबन्ति ये कर्ण-पुटै-अलम्
drink who by the ear cups incessantly,
प्रभो देहम्भृताम्
O Lord! For the embodied,
देह-कृत्-अस्मृति-छिदम्
by body holding caused ignorance shattering
'O Lord! The nectar of Your lotus feet is imbibed by the minds of the exalted souls, and which flows from there lips at times. That, those embodied souls who incessantly drink through their ear cups, their ignorance caused by holding the body, that ignorance is then shattered. Where can there be inauspiciousness for them?'
हित्वाऽऽत्मधामविधुतात्मकृतत्र्यवस्थमानन्दसम्प्लवमखण्डमकुण्ठबोधम् ।
कालोपसृष्टनिगमावन आत्तयोगमायाकृतिं परमहंसगतिं नता: स्म ॥४॥
हित्वा-आत्म-धाम-विधुत-आत्म-कृत-
giving up Your own abode, beyond, by Yourself created
त्रि-अवस्थम्-आनन्द-सम्प्लवम्-
the three states, (You) of Bliss The Ocean,
अखण्डम्-अकुण्ठ-बोधम्
The Uninterrupted steady knowledge,
काल-उपसृष्ट-निगम-अवन
by Time traversed Vedas' to protect,
आत्त-योगमाया-आकृतिम्
took on by Yoga Maayaa, this form,
परमहंस-गतिम् नता: स्म
of the recluses The resort, (to You) bowed are we
O Lord! You gave up Your own abode, You, Who are beyond the three states of mind, created by You, You are the ocean of Bliss, The unfailing and steady knowledge, to protect the Time traversed Vedas, You assumed this form by Your own Yoga Maayaa, to That, The only resort of the recluses, You, we bow down.
ऋषि-उवाच -
The sage said -
इत्युत्तमश्लोकशिखामणिं जनेष्वभिष्टुवत्स्वन्धककौरवस्त्रिय: ।
समेत्य गोविन्दकथा मिथोऽगृणंस्त्रिलोकगीता: शृणु वर्णयामि ते ॥५॥
इति-उत्तम-श्लोक-शिखा-मणिम्
thus, of The Highly Renowned's crest jewel's
जनेषु-अभिष्टुवत्सु-
among the people, extolling,
अन्धक-कौरव-स्त्रिय:
the Andhaka and Kaurava women
समेत्य गोविन्द-कथा
got together, and Govinda's stories
मिथ:-अगृणन्-त्रिलोक
to each other related, in the three worlds
गीता: शृणु वर्णयामि ते
sung of, listen, I will describe to you
In this manner, as Yudhishthira and others, among the people, were extolling Krishna, The crest jewel of the highly renowned ones, the women of the Andhaka and Kaurava clan got together and related to each other the stories of Krishna, which are sung of in all the three worlds. I will describe them to you, listen.
द्रौपदी-उवाच -
Draupadi said -
हे वैदर्भ्यच्युतो भद्रे हे जाम्बवति कौसले ।
हे सत्यभामे कालिन्दि शैव्ये रोहिणि लक्ष्मणे ॥६॥
हे वैदर्भि-अच्युत: भद्रे
O Rukmini, Lord infinite, O Bhadraa,
हे जाम्बवति कौसले
Jaambavati, Satyaa,
हे सत्यभामे कालिन्दि
Satyabhaamaa, Kaalindee,
शैव्ये रोहिणि लक्ष्मणे
Shaivyaa, Rohini, Lakshmana,
O Rukmini, O Bhadraa, Jaambavati, Satyaa, Satyabhaamaa, Kaalindee, Shaivyaa, Rohini, Lakshmana, The Lord Infinite,….
हे कृष्णपत्न्य एतन्नो ब्रूत वो भगवान् स्वयम् ।
उपयेमे यथा लोकमनुकुर्वन् स्वमायया ॥७॥
हे कृष्ण-पत्न्य: एतत्-न: ब्रूत
O Krishna's consorts, this to us say
भगवान् स्वयम्
The Lord Himself
उपयेमे यथा लोकम्-
married how, the worldly
अनुकुर्वन् स्व-मायया
way following, by His own Maayaa
O Krishna's consorts, do tell us, how He being The Lord Himself, how did He marry you all, by His own Maayaa, following the ways of the world?
रुक्मिणी-उवाच -
Rukmini said -
चैद्याय मार्पयितुमुद्यतकार्मुकेषु राजस्वजेयभटशेखरिताङ्घ्रिरेणु: ।
निन्ये मृगेन्द्र इव भागमजावियूथात् तच्छ्रीनिकेतचरणोऽस्तु ममार्चनाय ॥८॥
चैद्याय मा-अर्पयितुम्-
to Chaidya (Shishupaala) me to give
उद्यत-कार्मुकेषु राजसु-अजेय-
with bows drawn the kings, invincible
भट-शेखरित-अङ्घ्रि-रेणु:
warriors on the crowns (bearing), (His) feet dust,
निन्ये मृगेन्द्र इव भागम्-अज-
took away, lion like, the share, from the goats
अवि-यूथात् तत्-श्रीनिकेत-चरण:-
and sheep herds, That Shree's abode's feet
अस्तु मम-अर्चनाय
may be for My worship
All the kings and Jaraasandha with their bows strings drawn, were intent on giving me to Shishupaala. He, Krishna, whose feet dust the invincible warriors also wear on their crowns, took me away, like a lion takes away his share from the herd of goats and sheep. May His feet, the Abode of Laxmi, be ever available to me for worship.
सत्यभामा-उवाच -
Satyabhaamaa said -
यो मे सनाभिवधतप्तहृदा ततेनलिप्ताभिशापमपमार्ष्टुमुपाजहार ।
जित्वर्क्षराजमथ रत्नमदात् स तेन भीत: पितादिशत मां प्रभवेऽपि दत्ताम् ॥९॥
य: मे सनाभि-वध-तप्त-हृदा
who, me, by brother's killing, sore at heart,
ततेन लिप्ता-अभिशापम्-
by father accused, that false accusation
अपमार्ष्टुम्-उपाजहार
to wipe off, brought back
जित्वा-ऋक्ष-राजम्-अथ रत्नम्-अदात्
winning over the bear king, then the gem gave,
स: तेन भीत: पिता-आदिशत
he (my father) by Him afraid of, father gave
माम् प्रभवे-अपि दत्ताम्
me, engaged though given
On the killing of his brother, my father was sore at heart, and accused Krishna for the same. To wipe off the false accusation, Shri Krishna won over the bear king and brought back the gem to my father. My father being afraid of having falsely accused Him, gave the gem back to Him, and even gave me, even though I was promised to another.
जाम्बवति-उवाच -
Jaambavati said -
प्राज्ञाय देहकृदमुं निजनाथदेवं सीतापतिं त्रिणवहान्यमुनाभ्ययुध्यत् ।
ज्ञात्वा परीक्षित उपाहरदर्हणं मां पादौ प्रगृह्य मणिनाहममुष्य दासी ॥१०॥
प्राज्ञाय देह-कृत्-अमुम्
not knowing well, in body, Him,
निज-नाथ-देवम् सीता-पतिम्
own master, The Lord, Sita's husband, (Raama)
त्रि-नव-अहानि-अमुना-अभ्ययुध्यत्
three-nine (twenty seven) days, with Him, fought
ज्ञात्वा परीक्षित: उपाहरत्-अर्हणम्
coming to know, having tested, brought as worship
माम् पादौ प्रगृह्य मणिना-
me, feet holding, with the gem,
अहम्-अमुष्य दासी
I am His slave
My father, Jaambavaana (Jaambavaana, the lord of bears), did not know that in the embodied form, He was his own master and deity, Lord Raama, Sita's husband. So he fought with Him for twenty seven days. Then recognizing Him after the test, my father caught hold of His feet and brought me along with the gem as worship to Him. I am His slave.
कालिन्दी-उवाच -
Kaalindee said -
तपश्चरन्तीमाज्ञाय स्वपादस्पर्शनाशया ।
सख्योपेत्याग्रहीत् पाणिं योऽहं तद्गृहमार्जनी ॥११॥
तप:-चरन्तीम्-आज्ञाय
austerities practicing, coming to know,
स्व-पाद स्पर्शन-आशया
His own feet to touch wanting,
सख्या-उपेत्य-ग्रहीत् पाणिम् य:-
with friend having come, held hand Who,
अहम् तत्-गृह-मार्जनी
I am His house sweeper
When He came to know that I was practicing austerities with the desire to touch His own feet, He came with His friend, Arjuna, and held my hand. I am His house sweeper.
मित्रविन्दा-उवाच -
Mitravindaa said -
यो मां स्वयंवर उपेत्य विजित्य भूपान् निन्ये श्वयूथगमिवात्मबलिं द्विपारि: ।
भ्रातृंश्च मेऽपकुरुत: स्वपुरं श्रियौकस्तस्यास्तु मेऽनुभवमङ्घ्र्यवनेजनत्वम् ॥१२॥
य: माम् स्वयंवरे उपेत्य विजित्य
Who, Me, from self selecting assembly, coming to, winning
भूपान् निन्ये श्व-यूथ-गम्-इव-
the kings, took away, from a dog's pack, like
आत्म-बलिम् द्विप-अरि:
own share the elephant's enemy, (lion),
भ्रातृन्-च मे-अपकुरुत: स्व-पुरम्
brothers and my (interest) disregarding, to own city,
श्रिया-ओक:-तस्या:-तु मे-
of opulence the reservoir, of her, me,
अनुभवम्-अङ्घ्रि-अवनेजनत्वम्
the innermost desire is to feet wash
He is the One, Who came to the self selecting assembly, and conquered the kings and my brothers, who had no regard for my interests, and like an elephant's enemy the lion takes away his share from a pack of dogs, took me away to His own city, the abode of opulence. That me, deeply desire to wash His feet for ever.
सत्या-उवाच -
Satyaa said -
सप्तोक्षणोऽतिबलवीर्यसुतीक्ष्णशृंगान् पित्रा कृतान् क्षितिपवीर्यपरीक्षणाय ।
तान् वीरदुर्मदहनस्तरसा निगृह्य क्रीडन् बबन्ध ह यथा शिशवोऽजतोकान् ॥१३॥
सप्त-उक्षण:-अति-बल-वीर्य-
seven oxen, of great strength and energy,
सुतीक्ष्ण-शृंगान् पित्रा कृतान्
with sharp horns, by father readied,
क्षितिप-वीर्य-परीक्षणाय
of the kings valour to test,
तान् वीर-दुर्मद-हन:-तरसा
them, of the warriors pride shattering, soon,
निगृह्य क्रीडन् बबन्ध ह
holding playfully, tied, indeed,
यथा शिशव:-अज-तोकान्
just as children the goats' lambs
My father had readied seven oxen of great strength and energy to test the valour of the kings. The pride of many a warriors was shattered by them. He, Krishna, quickly and playfully got hold of them, and tied them, just as the children would hold the lambs.
य इत्थं वीर्यशुल्कां मां दासीभिश्चतुरङ्गिणीम् ।
पथि निर्जित्य राजन्यान् निन्ये तद्दास्यमस्तु मे ॥१४॥
य: इत्थम् वीर्य-शुल्काम् माम्
Who, in this manner, by strength to be conquered, me,
दासीभि:-चतुरङ्गिणीम्
with the maids, and the army,
पथि निर्जित्य राजन्यान् निन्ये
on the way conquering, the kings, took away,
तत्-दास्यम्-अस्तु मे
His slavery may be mine
The One Who, in this manner won over the kings on the way, and took me away, who was to be conquered by strength, with the maids and the army, to Dwaarakaa, may I always serve Him as a slave.
भद्रा-उवाच -
Bhadra said -
पिता मे मातुलेयाय स्वयमाहूय दत्तवान् ।
कृष्णे कृष्णाय तच्चित्तामक्षौहिण्या सखीजनै: ॥१५॥
पिता मे मातुलेयाय
father mine, to my maternal uncle's son,
स्वयम्-आहूय दत्तवान्
himself called for and gave
कृष्णे कृष्णाय तत्-चित्ताम्-
O Draupadi! to Krishna, in Him mind engaged
अक्षौहिण्या सखी-जनै:
with army and maids of honour
O Draupadi! My father knew that I had my mind fixed on Shree Krishna, the son of my maternal uncle, so, he of his own accord called for Him and gave me to Him along with an army and maids in honour.
अस्य मे पादसंस्पर्शो भवेज्जन्मनि जन्मनि ।
कर्मभिर्भ्राम्यमाणाया येन तच्छ्रेय आत्मन: ॥१६॥
अस्य मे पाद-संस्पर्श:
His, to me, feet's touch
भवेत्-जन्मनि जन्मनि
may be in every birth
कर्मभि:-भ्राम्यमाणाया:
by the Karma cycle thrown
येन तत्-श्रेय: आत्मन:
by which, that will be for my good
By the cycle of Karma, in what ever condition I may be thrown into, it will be for my highest good, that in every birth, I get the touch of His feet.
लक्ष्मणा-उवाच -
Laxmanaa said -
ममापि राज्ञ्यच्युतजन्मकर्म श्रुत्वा मुहुर्नारदगीतमास ह ।
चित्तं मुकुन्दे किल पद्महस्तया वृत: सुसंमृश्य विहाय लोकपान् ॥१७॥
मम्-अपि राज्ञि-अच्युत-जन्म-कर्म
my also, O Queen! of The Infinite birth and deeds
श्रुत्वा मुहु:-नारद-गीतम्-आस ह
hearing, again and again by Naarada sung, became
चित्तम् मुकुन्दे किल पद्म-हस्तया
the mind in Mukunda certainly, by the lotus in hand,
वृत: सुसंमृश्य विहाय लोकपान्
(Laxmi), married, knowing well enough, rejecting guardians
O Queen! I had again and again heard Naarada singing of The Infinite Lord's birth and deeds. My mind, rejecting the guardians of the quarters and others, became fixed in Him, Mukunda, even though knowing well that Laxmi had married Him.
ज्ञात्वा मम मतं साध्वि पिता दुहितृवत्सल: ।
बृहत्सेन इति ख्यातस्तत्रोपायमचीकरत् ॥१८॥
ज्ञात्वा मम मतम् साध्वि
knowing my mind, O Virtuous Lady!
पिता दुहितृ-वत्सल:
father, daughter fond of,
बृहत्सेन इति ख्यात:-
Brihatsena, thus well known,
तत्र-उपायम्-अचीकरत्
for that plan thought of
O Virtuous Lady! My father, well known as Brihatsena, was very fond of his daughter. Knowing my mind, he thought of a plan to make fulfil my wish.
यथा स्वयंवरे राज्ञि मत्स्य: पार्थेप्सया कृत: ।
अयं तु बहिराच्छन्नो दृश्यते स जले परम् ॥१९॥
यथा स्वयंवरे राज्ञि
just as in the match self selecting assembly, O Queen!
मत्स्य: पार्थ-ईप्सया कृत:
the fish for Arjuna desiring was made,
अयम् तु बहि:-आच्छन्न:
this, but, from outside was covered
दृश्यते स: जले परम्
was seen that in the water only
O Queen! Just as in your match self-selecting assembly, a fish was prepared with the desire to get Arjuna, in the assembly for me, the fish was entirely covered from out side, only its reflection was seen in the water.
श्रुत्वैतत् सर्वतो भूपा आययुर्मत्पितु: पुरम् ।
सर्वास्त्रशस्त्रतत्त्वज्ञा: सोपाध्याया: सहस्रश: ॥२०॥
श्रुत्वा-एतत् सर्वत: भूपा:
hearing this, from everywhere the kings
आययु:-मत्-पितु: पुरम्
came to my father's city
सर्व-अस्त्र-शस्त्र-तत्त्व-ज्ञा:
all the weapons and arms using secret knowers
स-उपाध्याया: सहस्रश:
with their teachers, in thousands
Hearing about this, kings came in thousands, with their teachers, from everywhere, came to my father's city. They all were well-versed in the secret of the use of all weapons and arms.
पित्रा सम्पूजिता: सर्वे यथावीर्यं यथावय: ।
आददु: सशरं चापं वेद्धुं पर्षदि मद्धिय: ॥२१॥
पित्रा सम्पूजिता: सर्वे
by my father were honoured all
यथा-वीर्यम् यथा-वय:
according to their strength, according to their age
आददु: सशरम् चापम्
took up with the arrow the bow,
वेद्धुम् पर्षदि मत्-धिय:
to hit the mark, in the assembly, with me in mind
They were all honoured by my father with regard to their power and age. They took up the bow and arrow, to hit the mark, in the assembly with a mind to win me.
आदाय व्यसृजन् केचित् सज्यं कर्तुमनीश्वरा: ।
आकोटि ज्यां समुत्कृष्य पेतुरेकेऽमुना हता: ॥२२॥
आदाय व्यसृजन् केचित्
taking up, gave up some,
सज्यम् कर्तुम्-अनीश्वरा:
the bow to string, pull were incapable,
आकोटि ज्याम् समुत्कृष्य
to the other end the string, having pulled,
पेतु:-एके-अमुना हता:
fell, some, by it hit
Some of them lifted the bow and then gave up. Some were incapable of stringing the bow. Some others pulled the string but could not take it to the other end, and fell, hit by the bow.
सज्यं कृत्वापरे वीरा मागधाम्बष्ठचेदिपा: ।
भीमो दुर्योधन: कर्णो नाविन्दंस्तदवस्थितिम् ॥२३॥
सज्यम् कृत्वा-अपरे वीरा:
having strung, the other warriors,
मागध-अम्बष्ठ-चेदिया:
of Magadha, Ambashtha, and Shishupaala,
भीम: दुर्योधन: कर्ण:
Bheema, Duryodhana and Karna,
न-अविन्दन्-तत्-अवस्थितिम्
did not understand its (the fish) location
Other warriors, of Magadha, Ambashtha, and Shishupaala, Bheema, Duryodhana and Karna, did string the bow, but could not understand the location of the fish.
मत्स्याभासं जले वीक्ष्य ज्ञात्वा च तदवस्थितिम् ।
पार्थो यत्तोऽसृजत् बाणं नाच्छिनत् पस्पृशे परम् ॥२४॥
मत्स्य-आभासम् जले वीक्ष्य
the fish reflection in the water seeing,
ज्ञात्वा च तत्-अवस्थितिम्
and knowing its location,
पार्थ: यत्त:-असृजत् बाणम्
Arjuna carefully discharged the arrow
न-अच्छिनत् पस्पृशे परम्
did not hit it, touched only
Arjuna saw the reflection of the fish in the water, and also located it. Then he carefully discharged the arrow, but he could not hit the fish, he could just touch it.
राजन्येषु निवृत्तेषु भग्नमानेषु मानिषु ।
भगवान् धनुरादाय् सज्यं कृत्वाथ लीलया ॥२५॥
राजन्येषु निवृत्तेषु
the kings having given up,
भग्न-मानेषु मानिषु
with shattered prides the arrogant
भगवान् धनु:-आदाय
The Almighty Lord bow taking up
सज्यम् कृत्वा-अथ लीलया
stringing it, then sportingly
When the arrogant kings, with their prides shattered, had given up, The Almighty Lord, took up the bow and sportingly strung it.
तस्मिन् सन्धाय विशिखं मत्स्यं वीक्ष्य सकृज्जले ।
छित्त्वेषुणापातयत्तं सूर्ये चाभिजिति स्थिते ॥२६॥
तस्मिन् सन्धाय विशिखम्
on that placing the arrow,
मत्स्यम् वीक्ष्य सकृत्-जले
the fish looking at once in the water,
छित्वा-इषुणा-अपातयत्-तम्
piercing with the arrow, fell it
सूर्ये च-अभिजिति स्थिते
Sun and in Abhijit was placed
On the bow placing the arrow, He looked at the reflection of the fish in the water, once, and then pierced it with the arrow and made it fall on the ground. At that time, the Sun was in the Abhijit star (meridians).
दिवि दुन्दुभयो नेदुर्जयशबदयुता भुवि ।
देवाश्च कुसुमासारान् मुमुचुर्हर्षविह्वला: ॥२७॥
दिवि दुन्दुभय: नेदु:-
in the heaven trumpets were sounded
जय-शब्द-युता: भुवि
victory words along with on the earth
देवा:-च कुसुम-आसारान् मुमुचु:-
gods and flowers clusters showered
हर्ष-विह्वला:
with joy overcome
Trumpets were sounded in the heavens, and earth resounded with the words of victory. The gods, overcome with joy, showered clusters of flowers.
तद् रङ्गमाविशमहं कलनूपुराभ्यां पद्भ्यां प्रगृह्य कनकोज्ज्वलरत्नमालाम् ।
नूत्ने निवीय परिधाय च कौशिकाग्र्ये सव्रीडहासवदना कबरीधृतस्रक् ॥२८॥
तत् रङ्गम्-आविशम्-अहम्
that arena entered I
कल-नूपुराभ्याम् पद्भ्याम्
sounding the anklets in the feet
प्रगृह्य कनक-उज्ज्वल रत्न-मालाम्
holding golden shining gem necklace
नूत्ने निवीय परिधाय च
new garments wearing and
कौशिक-अग्र्ये सव्रीड-हास-
silken around, with shy smile
वदना कबरी-धृत-स्रक्
on the face, in the braids arranged flower garland
I entered that arena, with my anklets in the feet sounding sweetly, holding a golden gem necklace, wearing new garments of silk around the waist, with a shy smile on the face and flower garlands in the hair braids.
उन्नीय वक्त्रमुरुकुन्तलकुण्डलत्विड् गण्डस्थलं शिशिरहासकटाक्षमोक्षै: ।
राज्ञो निरीक्ष्य परित: शनकैर्मुरारेरंसेऽनुरक्तहृदया निदधे स्वमालाम् ॥२९॥
उन्नीय वक्त्रम्-उरु-कुन्तल-
lifting my face, with dense curls,
कुण्डल-त्विड् गण्ड-स्थलम्
ear-rings' lustre, cheek area
शिशिर-हास-कटाक्षमोक्षै:
a cool smile, side glances casting,
राज्ञ: निरीक्ष्य परित: शनकै:-
the kings looking at around, slowly
मुरारे:-अंसे-अनुरक्त-हृदया
on Krishna's neck, loving hearted,
निदधे-स्वमालाम्
placed my necklace
I, with my face lifted up, surrounded by dense curls and the cheeks covered with the lustre of ear-rings, with a cool smile, looked at the kings all around, then casting side long glances, with my heart full of love, placed my necklace in Shree Krishna's neck.
तावन्मृदङ्गपटहा: शङ्खभेर्यानकादय: ।
निनेदुर्नटनर्तक्यो ननृतुर्गायका जगु: ॥३०॥
तावत्-मृङ्ग-पटहा:
just then, clay tom-toms, tabors,
शङ्ख-भेरी-आनक-आदय:
conches, drums and kettle drums and others
निनेदु:-नट-नर्तक्य: ननृतु:-

singers sang
Just then, clay tom-toms, tabors, conches, drums and kettle drums and others were sounded, the dancers danced and the singers sang.
एवं वृते भगवति मयेशे नृपयूथपा: ।
न सेहिरे याज्ञसेनि स्पर्धन्तो हृच्छयातुरा: ॥३१॥
एवम् वृते भगवति
thus, having chosen The Lord
मया-ईशे नृप-यूथपा:
by me, The Almighty, the kings' hoards
न सेहिरे याज्ञसेनि
did not bear, O Draupadi!
स्पर्धन्त: हृच्छय-आतुरा:
contesting, by love lorn
O Draupadi! Thus, when I had chosen The Lord, The Almighty, the contesting hoards of love lorn kings did not bear it.
मां तावद् रथमारोप्य हयरत्नचतुष्टयम् ।
शार्ङ्गमुद्यम्य सन्नद्धस्तस्थावाजौ चतुर्भुज: ॥३२॥
माम् तावत् रथम्-आरोप्य
me, by then, in the chariot placed,
हय-रत्न-चतुष्टयम्
with horses excellent four,
शार्ङ्गम्-उद्यम्य सन्नद्ध:-
Shaaranga bow, uplifting, armoured,
तस्थौ-आजौ चतुर्भुज:
stood, for combat, The Four armed Lord
By then, The Four armed Lord, placed me in the chariot with four excellent horses, and taking up His Shaaranga bow and armoured, stood ready for a combat.
दारुकश्चोदयामास काञ्चनोपस्करं रथम् ।
मिषतां भूभुजां राज्ञि मृगाणां मृगराडिव ॥३३॥
दारुक:-चोदयामास
Daaruka drove
काञ्चन्-उपस्करम् रथम्
the gold provision provided chariot,
मिषताम् भूभुजाम् राज्ञि
in front of the kings, O Queen!
मृगाणाम् मृगराज-इव
from among the deer a lion like
O Queen! Daaruka drove the chariot provided with golden provisions, and The Lord went away in front of the kings, just as a lion from the herd of deers.
तेऽन्वसज्जन्त राजन्या निषेद्धुं पथि केचन ।
संयत्ता उद्धृतेष्वासा ग्रामसिंहा यथा हरिम् ॥३४॥
ते-अन्वसज्जन्त: राजन्या:
they prepared, the kings
निषेद्धुम् पथि केचन
to obstruct on the way, some
संयत्ता: उद्धृत-इषु-आसा:
armed, taking up bows and swords,
ग्रामसिंहा: यथा हरिम्
dogs like a lion
Some of the kings prepared themselves, armed with bows and swords, to obstruct Him on the way, like the dogs trying to check the lion.
ते शार्ङ्गच्युतबाणौघै: कृत्तबाह्वङ्घ्रिकन्धरा: ।
निपेतु: प्रधने केचिदेके सन्त्यज्य दुद्रुवु: ॥३५॥
ते शार्ङ्ग-च्युत-बाण-औघै:
they from Shaaranga discharged arrow volleys,
कृत्त-बाहु-अङ्घ्रि-कन्धरा:
with cut off arms, feet and shoulders,
निपेतु: प्रधने केचित्
fell in the battle some,
एके सन्त्यज्य दुद्रुवु:
some leaving, fled
With the volley of arrows discharged from Shaaranga, of some of them the arms legs and shoulders were cut off, and they fell, while some abandoned the battle and fled.
तत: पुरीं यदुपतिरत्यलङ्कृतां रविच्छदध्वजपटचित्रतोरणां ।
कुशस्थलीं दिवि भुवि चाभिसंस्तुतां समाविशत्तरणिरिव स्वकेतनम् ॥३६॥
तत: पुरीम् यदुपति:-अति-अलङ्कृताम्
then, the city, of Yadus the Ruler, very well decorated,
रवि-च्छद-ध्वज-पटचित्र-तोरणाम्
with Sun's rays screenings, painted canopies,
कुशस्थलीम् दिवि भुवि
Dwaarakaa, in heaven, on earth
च-अभिसंस्तुताम् समाविशत्-
and praised, entered,
तरणि:-इव स्व-केतनम्
Sun like own home
Then, The Ruler of the Yadus, like the Sun, entered His own home, the well decorated city of Dwaarakaa, with Sun's rays' screenings and painted canopies, praised in the heaven as on the earth.
पिता मे पूजयामास सुहृत्सम्बन्धिबान्धवान् ।
महार्हवासोऽलङ्कारै: शय्यासनपरिच्छदै: ॥३७॥
पिता मे पूजयामास
father my honoured
सुहृत्-सम्बन्धि-बान्धवान्
friends, relatives and kinsmen
महार्हवास:-अलङ्कारै:
with valuable clothes, ornaments,
शय्या-आसन-परिच्छदै:
beds, seats and articles.
My father honoured the friends, relatives, kinsmen with valuable clothes ornaments, beds, seats and articles.
दासीभि: सर्वसम्पद्भिर्भटेभरथवाजिभि: ।
आयुधानि महार्हाणि ददौ पूर्णस्य भक्तित: ॥३८॥
दासीभि: सर्व-सम्पद्भि:-
with maid servants, all kinds of wealth,
भट-इभ-रथ-वाजिभि:
attendents, elephants, chariots, horses,
आयुधानि महार्हाणि
weapons valuable,
ददौ पूर्णस्य भक्तित:
gave to The Self -sufficient, out of devotion
The Lord is complete in Himself, yet my father out of devotion gave to Him maid servants, all kinds of wealth, attendents, elephants, chariots, horses, and valuable weapons.
आत्मारामस्य तस्येमा वयं वै गृहदासिका: ।
सर्वसङ्गनिवृत्त्याद्धा तपसा च बभूविम ॥३९॥
आत्मारामस्य तस्य-इमा:
Revelling in the Self, His, these
वयम् वै गृह-दासिका:
we, surely, house maids
सर्व-सङ्ग-निवृत्त्या-अद्धा
by all attachments giving up, intense
तपसा च बभूविम
austerities, and became
His, The Self revelling in The Self, house maids we became, by giving up all attachments and by intense austerities.
महिष्य: ऊचु: -
The Queens said -
भौमं निहत्य सगणं युधि तेन रुद्धा ज्ञात्वाथ न: क्षितिजये जितराजकन्या: ।
निर्मुच्य संसृतिविमोक्षमनुस्मरन्ती: पादाम्बुजं परिणिनाय य आप्तकाम: ॥४०॥
भौमम् निहत्य स-गणम्
Bhaumaasura, having killed, with his attendents,
युधि तेन रुद्धा ज्ञात्वा-अथ
in the battle by him captivated, knowing, then,
न: क्षितिजये जित-राजकन्या:
us, when world conquering, winning the princesses
निर्मुच्य संसृति-विमोक्षम्-
released, from birth cycle liberating
अनुस्मरन्ती: पाद-अम्बुजम्
always remembering, feet lotus,
परिणिनाय य: आप्तकाम:
married, (He) Who is desire less
When Bhaumaasura along with his attendents was killed, He came to know that during his world conquering enterprise, he had captivated us, the princesses. He released us from bondage, and His lotus feet which liberates one from birth cycle, which we always remember, we were then married to, though He Himself is desire less.
न वयं साध्वि साम्राज्यं स्वाराज्यं भौज्यमप्युत ।
वैराज्यं पारमेष्ठ्यं च आनन्त्यं वा हरे: परम् ॥४१॥
न वयम् साध्वि साम्राज्यम्
not we, O Virtuous Lady! emperorship,
स्वाराज्यम् भौज्यम्-अपि-उत
or the heaven's rulership, the enjoyments also or,
वैराज्यम् पारमेष्ठ्यम् च
supernatural powers, Brahmaa's status and
आनन्त्यम् वा हरे: परम्
liberation or, The Lord's abode
O Virtuous Lady! We do not aspire for the emperorship of the earth or the rulership of the heaven, or the enjoyments of them both, or supernatural powers, or Brahmaa's status, liberation or even The Lord's abode.
कामायामह एतस्य श्रीमत्पादरज: श्रिय: ।
कुचकुङ्कुमगन्धाढ्यं मूर्ध्ना वोढुं गदाभृत: ॥४२॥
कामायामहे एतस्य
We long for, of His
श्रीमत्-पाद-रज: श्रिय:
glorious feet dust, of Laxmi's
कुच-कुङ्कुम-गन्ध-आढ्यम्
bosom saffron paste scent bearing
मूर्ध्ना वोढुम् गदाभृत:
on (our) heads to carry, of The Mace wielder
We long to carry on our heads the glorious dust of the feet, of This, The Mace Wielder, which bears the scent of the saffron paste of Laxmi's bosom.
व्रजस्त्रियो यद् वाञ्छन्ति पुलिन्द्यस्तृणवीरुध: ।
गावश्चारयतो गोपा: पादस्पर्शं महात्मन: ॥४३॥
व्रज-स्त्रिय: यद् वाञ्छन्ति
the Vraja women which desire,
पुलिन्द्य:-तृण-वीरुध:
the Bheela women, the grass, creepers,
गाव:-चारयत: गोपा:
(when) the cows pasturing, the Gopas,
पाद-स्पर्शम् महात्मन:
feet to touch of The Exalted Soul
We long for the touch of the feet of The Exalted Soul, which the women of Vraja, the Bheela women, the grass and the creepers, and the Gopas desired, when He went pasturing the cows.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे त्र्यशीतितम: अध्याय: ॥८३॥
Thus ends the eighty-third discourse, in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
