राजा उवाच -
The King said -
देवासुरमनुष्येषु ये भजन्त्यशिवं शिवम् ।
प्रायस्ते धनिनो भोजा न तु लक्ष्म्या: पतिं हरिम् ॥१॥
देव-असुर-मनुष्येषु ये
among the gods, demons and men, those
भजन्ति-अशिवम् शिवम्
who worship inauspicious Shiva (devoid of wealth pleasures)
प्राय:-ते धनिन: भोजा:
generally, they are wealthy, enjoying sense pleasures
न तु लक्ष्म्या: पतिम् हरिम्
not indeed Laxmi's spouse, Lord Vishnu
Among the gods, demons and men, those who worship the inauspicious Lord Shiva, devoid of wealth and enjoyments, are the people who are rich and enjoying sense pleasure. It is not so with the devotees of the spouse of Laxmi, Lord Vishnu, Who is endowed with all riches and pleasures.
एतद् वेदितुमिच्छाम: सन्देहोऽत्र महान् हि न: ।
विरुद्धशीलयो: प्रभ्वोर्विरुद्धा भजतां गति: ॥२॥
एतत् वेदितुम्-इच्छाम:
this, to know want we,
सन्देह:-अत्र महान् हि न:
doubt here great indeed is ours,
विरुद्ध-शीलयो: प्रभ्वो:-
of the diverse natured Lords,
विरुद्धा भजताम् गति:
opposite is the devotee's disposition
Here, we have a great doubt, so we want to know, how is it that the disposition of the devotees of the diverse natured Lords, is so opposite.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
शिव: शक्तियुत: शश्वत् त्रिलिङ्गो गुणसंवृत: ।
वैकारिकस्तैजसश्च तामसश्चेत्यहं त्रिधा ॥३॥
शिव: शक्ति-युत: शश्वत्
Shiva is with His energy (Shakti) united always,
त्रि-लिङ्ग: गुण-संवृत:
Ahankaara presiding on, with Gunas invested,
वैकारिक:-तैजस:-च तामस:-
Saatvic, Raajasic, and Taamasic,
च-इति-अहम् त्रिधा
and this Ahankaara is three types
Shiva is always united with his energy, Shakti, and is presiding on Ahankaara, Cosmic Ego, and is invested with the three Gunas, so Ahankaara is of three types, Saatvic, Raajasika and Taamasika.
ततो विकारा अभवन् षोडशामीषु कञ्चन ।
उपधावन् विभूतीनां सर्वासामश्नुते गतिम् ॥४॥
तत: विकारा: अभवन्
from there evolutes came
षोडश-अमीषु कञ्चन
sixteen, from them, any one
उपधावन् विभूतीनाम्
worshipping, of prosperity
सर्वासाम्-अश्नुते गतिम्
all forms, obtains access
From these three types of Ahankaara, evoluted the sixteen evolutes. Worshipping any one of which, one obtains access to all forms of prosperity.
हरिर्हि निर्गुण: साक्षात् पुरुष: प्रकृते: पर: ।
स सर्वदृगुपद्रष्टा तं भजन् निर्गुणो भवेत् ॥५॥
हरि:-हि निर्गुण: साक्षात्
Shree Hari only is without the Gunas, clearly
पुरुष: प्रकृते: पर:
The Person of Prakriti beyond,
स: सर्व-दृक्-उपद्रष्टा
He is all witness, observer,
तम् भजन् निर्गुण: भवेत्
Him worshipping, beyond the Gunas becomes
Shree Hari Himself is devoid of Gunas, The Person beyond Prakriti, He is the all knower, the witness of all souls. He who worships Him, is rid of the Gunas.
निवृत्तेष्वश्वमेधेषु राजा युष्मत्पितामह: ।
शृण्वन् भगवतो धर्मानपृच्छदिदमच्युतम् ॥६॥
निवृत्तेषु-अश्वमेधेषु
at the end of the Ashvamedha
राजा युष्मत्-पितामह:
the king, your grandfather,
शृण्वन् भगवत: धर्मान्-
listening to the sacred duties,
अपृच्छत्-इदम्-अच्युतम्
asked this to the Infinite
After the end of the Ashvamedha sacrifice, when listening to the discourse on the sacred duties, as said by Krishna, king Yudhishthira, your grand father, had asked this to the Infinite Lord Krishna.
स आह भगवांस्तस्मै प्रीत: शुश्रूषवे प्रभु: ।
नृणां नि:श्रेयसार्थाय योऽवतीर्णो यदो: कुले ॥७॥
स: आह भगवान्-तस्मै
He said, The Lord to him,
प्रीत: शुश्रूषवे प्रभु:
with delight, the serving, Shree Krishna,
नृणाम् नि:श्रेयस-अर्थाय
for the peoples' highest benefit for the purpose
य:-अवतीर्ण: यदो: कुले
Who had descended in the Yadus' race
The Almighty Lord, Krishna Who had descended in the race of the Yadus', for the highest benefit of the people, with delight said this to him, who was serving Him…
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
यस्याहमनुगृह्णामि हरिष्ये तद्धनं शनै: ।
ततोऽधनं त्यजन्त्यस्य स्वजना दु:खदु:खितम् ॥८॥
यस्य-अहम्-अनुगृह्णामि
on whom I shower grace,
हरिष्ये तत् धनम् शनै:
take away his wealth, by and by,
तत:-अधनम् त्यजन्ति-
then him wealth-less forsake
अस्य स्वजना: दु:ख-दु:खितम्
his own people, poverty stricken, sorrowful
The one on whom I shower my grace, I slowly take away his wealth. Him, the wealth-less, his own people forsake, who is stricken with poverty and is sorrowful.
स यदा वितथोद्योगो निर्विण्ण: स्याद् धनेहया ।
मत्परै: कृतमैत्रस्य करिष्ये मदनुग्रहम् ॥९॥
स: यदा वितथ-उद्योग:
he, when, fails in earning
निर्विण्ण: स्यात् धन-ईहया
disinterested becomes in wealth wanting,
मत्-परै: कृत-मैत्रस्य
with My devotees, developing friendship,
करिष्ये मत्-अनुग्रहम्
I shower My blessings
When he fails in his endeavours for earning wealth, and becomes disinterested in desire for wealth, he develops friendship with My devotees. It is then that I confer My blessings on him.
तद् ब्रह्म परमं सूक्ष्मं चिन्मात्रं सदनन्तकम् ।
अतो मां सुदुराराध्यं हित्वान्यान् भजते जन: ॥१०॥
तद् ब्रह्म परमं सूक्ष्मं
That Brahman very subtle,
चित्-मात्रम् सत्-अनन्तकम्
Consciousness pure, Truth, Infinite,
अत: माम् सुदुराराध्यम्
so, Me, most difficult to comprehend,
हित्वा-अन्यान् भजते जन:
disregarding, others worship people
That Brahman, is very subtle, is pure Consciousness, Infinite Truth, and difficult to comprehend, so people, giving Me up, worship other deities.
ततस्त आषुतोषेभ्यो लब्धराज्यश्रियोद्धता: ।
मत्ता: प्रमत्ता वरदान् विस्मरन्त्यवजानते ॥११॥
तत:-ते आषुतोषेभ्य:
then they, from, the quick to be pleased (deities)
लब्ध-राज्य-श्रिय-उद्धता:
acquiring kingdom, wealth, excited,
मत्ता: प्रमत्ता: वरदान्
intoxicated way laid, the boon givers
विस्मरन्ति-अवजानते
forget and neglect
Then they, having acquired kingdom and wealth from the quick to be pleased gods, become excited intoxicated and arrogant and forget and ignore the very gods who had granted boons to them.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
शापप्रसादयोरीशा ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादय: ।
सद्य: शापप्रसादोऽङ्ग शिवो ब्रह्मा न चाच्युत: ॥१२॥
शाप-प्रसादयो:-ईशा:
of curse and boon the lords are
ब्रह्म-विष्णु-शिव-आदय:
Brahmaa Vishnu and Shiva and others,
सद्य: शाप-प्रसाद:-अङ्ग
instantly, curse and boon, O Dear Pareekshit!
शिव: ब्रह्मा न च-अच्युत:
(confer) Shiva and Brahmaa, not and so Vishnu
O Dear Pareekshit! Brahmaa, Vishnu and Shiva and others, are the lords of curses and boons. Shiva and Brahmaa are very quick in being pleased or angry, and so they are quick in cursing or conferring boons, it is not so with Vishnu.
अत्र चोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
वृकासुराय गिरिशो वरं दत्त्वाऽऽप सङ्कटम् ॥१३॥
अत्र च-उदाहरन्ति-इमम्-
in this, give an example, this
इतिहासम् पुरातनम्
incident ancient,
वृकासुराय गिरिश: वरम्
to Vrikaasura, Shiva, boon
दत्त्वा-आप सङ्कटम्
conferring, attained problem
In this matter, an illustration is given of the ancient incident, when having conferred a boon on Vrikaasura, Shiva had got into trouble.
वृको नामासुर: पुत्र: शकुने: पथि नारदम् ।
दृष्ट्वाऽऽशुतोषं पप्रच्छ देवेषु त्रिषु दुर्मति: ॥१४॥
वृक: नाम-असुर:
Vrika named demon,
पुत्र: शकुने: पथि नारदम्
the son of Shakuni, on the way, Naarada
दृष्ट्वा-आशुतोषम् पप्रच्छ
seeing, quick to be pleased, asked
देवेषु त्रिषु दुर्मति:
of the gods three, the evil minded
The evil minded demon, by the name Vrika, the son of Shakuni, met Naarada on the way and asked him as to who of the three gods, was quickly pleased.
स आह देवं गिरिशमुपाधावाशु सिद्ध्यसि ।
योऽल्पाभ्यां गुणदोषाभ्यामाशु तुष्यति कुप्यति ॥१५॥
स: आह देवम् गिरिशम्-
he said, the lord Shiva
उपाधाव-आशु सिद्ध्यसि
worship, soon will get the result
य:-अल्पाभ्याम् गुण-दोषाभ्याम्-
who by small merits and faults
आशु तुष्यति कुप्यति
soon is appeased and enraged
He said, ' Worship Lord Shiva, you will soon gain your objective. He is the one who is soon pleased by a small merit, and is soon offended by a small offense.'
दशास्यबाणयोस्तुष्ट: स्तुवतोर्वन्दिनोरिव ।
ऐश्वर्यमतुलं दत्त्वा तत आप सुसङ्कटम् ॥१६॥
दशास्य-बाणयो:-तुष्ट:-
Raavana and Baanaasura, pleased with,
स्तुवतो:-वन्दिनो:-इव
who sang His praises bards like
ऐश्वर्यम्-अतुलम् दत्त्वा
wealth immense having given
तत: आप सुसङ्कटम्
then attained great trouble
Raavana and Baanaasura had appeased Him by simply singing His praises like the bards. He gave them immense wealth and then, fell into great trouble.
इत्यादिष्टस्तमसुर उपाधावत स्वगात्रत: ।
केदार आत्मक्रव्येण जुह्वानोऽग्निमुखं हरम् ॥१७॥
इति-आदिष्ट:-तम्-असुर
so instructed, Him, the demon,
उपाधावत स्व-गात्रत:
propitiated, by his own body,
केदारे आत्म-क्रव्येण
in Kedaara, by self flesh
जुह्वान:-अग्नि-मुखम् हरम्
sacrificed in the fire mouth, Shiva
So instructed, the demon, in Kedaara, propitiated Shiva by sacrificing flesh from his own body into the mouth of the fire.
देवोपलब्धिमप्राप्य निर्वेदात् सप्तमेऽहनि ।
शिरोऽवृश्चत् स्वधितिना तत्तीर्थक्लिन्नमूर्धजम् ॥१८॥
देव-उपलब्धिम्-अप्राप्य
the lord's sight not achieving,
निर्वेदात् सप्तमे-अहनि
with sorrow, on the seventh day,
शिर:-अवृश्चत् स्वधितिना
head cut with his own sword,
तत्-तीर्थ-क्लिन्न-मूर्धजम्
that pilgrimage's (water) wetted crown
The Lord's sight unable to achieve, sorrowfully, on the seventh day, he proceeded to cut off his head with his own sword, with his crown dipped in the holy water of that pilgrimage.
तदा महाकारुणिक: स धूर्जटिर्यथा वयं चाग्निरिवोत्थितोऽनलात् ।
निगृह्य दोर्भ्यां भुजयोर्न्यवारयत् तत्स्पर्शनाद् भूय उपस्कृताकृति: ॥१९॥
तदा महा-कारुणिक:
then, the great compassionate
स: धूर्जटि:-यथा वयम्
He, Shiva, just as we (would)
च-अग्नि:-इव-उत्थित:-अनलात्
and fire god like arising from the flames,
निगृह्य दोर्भ्याम् भुजयो:-
caught with both arms
न्यवारयत् तत्-स्पर्शनाद्
deterred (him), by His touch,
भूय: उपस्कृत-आकृति:
again became whole (his) form
Just as we would save one from committing suicide, the great compassionate Lord Shiva arose from the flames like the fire god, and holding him with both His arms deterred him from doing so. By His touch, the demon's form became whole again.
तमाह चाङ्गालमलं वृणीष्व मे यथाभिकामं वितरामि ते वरम् ।
प्रीयेय तोयेन नृणां प्रपद्यतामहो त्वयाऽऽत्मा भृशमर्द्यते वृथा ॥२०॥
तम्-आह च-अङ्ग-अलम्-अलम्
to him said, and O Dear! Enough, enough,
वृणीष्व मे यथा-अभिकामम्
ask of Me, as you wish
वितरामि ते वरम्
will give to you boon
प्रीयेय तोयेन नृणाम्
am pleased by water, by men
प्रपद्यताम्-अहो त्वया-
seeking shelter, Oh! by you
आत्मा भृशम्-अर्द्यते वृथा
your body is very much tormented, in vain
To him, He said, ' Enough, enough! Ask of Me any boon of your choice, I will grant it to you. I am pleased just by the offering of water by men who seek My shelter. Oh! You have needlessly tormented your own body so much.'
देवं स वव्रे पापीयान् वरं भूतभयावहम् ।
यस्य यस्य करं शीर्ष्णि धास्ये स म्रियतामिति ॥२१॥
देवम् स: वव्रे पापीयान्
to the god, he asked for, the evil minded,
वरम् भूत-भय-आवहम्
the boon, for the beings fear generating,
यस्य यस्य करम् शीर्ष्णि
on who-so-ever's, hand on the head,
धास्ये स: म्रियताम्-इति
I place, he may die, thus
The evil minded demon asked the god for a boon which was fear generating for the embodied beings. Which was, 'On who-so-ever's head I place my hand, may he die.'
तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान् रुद्रो दुर्मना इव भारत ।
ऒमिति प्रहसंस्तस्मै ददेऽहेरमृतं यथा ॥२२॥
तत्-श्रुत्वा भगवान् रुद्र:
that hearing, Lord Shiva,
दुर्मना इव भारत
unhappy like, O Bhaarata!
ऒम्-इति प्रहसन्-तस्मै
'Amen' thus laughingly to him
ददे-अहे:-अमृतम् यथा
gave, to the snake nectar like
Hearing that, Lord Shiva was a bit unhappy, but laughingly said to him, 'Amen', O Bhaarata! As though he gave nectar to the serpent.
इत्युक्त: सोऽसुरो नूनं गौरीहरणलालस: ।
स तद्वरपरीक्षार्थं शम्भोर्मूर्ध्नि किलासुर: ।
स्वहस्तं धातुमारेभे सोऽविभ्यत् स्वकृताच्छिव: ॥२३॥
इति-उक्त: स:-असुर:
so told, the demon,
नूनम् गौरी-हरण-लालस:
surely, Paarvati to abduct wanting,
स: तत्-वर-परीक्षा-अर्थम्
he, that boon to test, wanting,
शम्भो:-मूर्ध्नि किल-असुर:
on Shiva's head, indeed, the demon
स्व-हस्तम् धातुम्-आरेभे
own hand to place, started,
स:-अविभ्यत् स्व-कृतात्-शिव:
He was dismayed by His own act, Lord Shiva
The demon intended to abduct Paarvati. So, thus being assured, he wanted to test the efficacy of the boon, and so he proceeded to place his hand on Shiva's head. Lord Shiva was dismayed at His own act.
तेनोपसृष्ट: संत्रस्त: पराधावन् सवेपथु: ।
यावदन्तं दिवो भूमे: काष्ठानामुदगादुदक् ॥२४॥
तेन-उपसृष्ट: संत्रस्त:
by him approached, tormented,
पराधावन् स: वेपथु:
chasing, He, trembling,
यावत्-अन्तम् दिव: भूमे:
till the end of heaven and earth
काष्ठानाम्-उदगात्-उदक्
the directions, went to the north
Approached by him Shiva was tormented, chased by him, trembling He, went to the end of the earth the heaven and the directions, and went towards north.
अजानन्त: प्रतिविधिं तूष्णीमासन् सुरेश्वरा: ।
ततो वैकुण्ठमगमद् भास्वरं तमस: परम् ॥२५॥
अजानन्त: प्रतिविधिम्
not knowing the remedy,
तूष्णीम्-आसन् सुर-ईश्वरा:
silent were all prominent gods
तत: वैकुण्ठम्-अगमद्
from there, to Vaikuntha went
भास्वरम् तमस: परम्
the shining, of Prakriti beyond
Even the prominent gods were silent not knowing the remedy to this. From there, Lord Shiva went to the shining Vaikuntha, which is beyond Prakriti.
यत्र नारायण: साक्षान्न्यासिनां परमा गति: ।
शान्तानां न्यस्तदण्डानां यतो नावर्तते गत: ॥२६॥
यत्र नारायण: साक्षात्-
where Naaraayana, Himself,
न्यासिनाम् परमा गति:
of the recluses the ultimate resort,
शान्तानाम् न्यस्त-दण्डानाम्
peaceful, giving up violence
यत: न-आवर्तते गत:
from where do not return having gone
Where Naaraayana Himself resides, Who is the ultimate resort of the peaceful, recluses, who have given up violence. Where, having reached, one does not come back to the mundane existence.
तं तथाव्यसनं दृष्ट्वा भगवान् वृजिनार्दन: ।
दूरात् प्रत्युदियाद् भूत्वा वटुको योगमायया ॥२७॥
तम् तथा-व्यसनम् दृष्ट्वा
Him, thus, in trouble seeing,
भगवान् वृजि-अर्दन:
The Lord, The afflictions remover
दूरात् प्रत्युदियाद् भूत्वा
from far, appeared, assuming
वटुक: योग-मायया
a student Brahmachari's (form), by Yoga Maayaa
From far, seeing Lord Shiva in trouble, The Lord Naaraayana, The Remover of sorrows, appeared before the demon, assuming the form of a student Brahmachari's, by His Yoga Maayaa.
मेखलाजिनदण्डाक्षैस्तेजसाग्निरिव ज्वलन् ।
अभिवादयामास च तं कुशपाणिर्विनीतवत् ॥२८॥
मेखला-अजिन-दण्ड-अक्षै:-
with girdle, deer skin, staff, Rudraaksha,
तेजसा-अग्नि:-इव ज्वलन्
by lustre fire like shining,
अभिवादयामास च तम्
greeted, and him,
कुश-पाणि:-विनीत-वत्
grass in hand, humble like
He was adorned with a girdle, deer skin, staff, and Rudraaksha beads rosary. With Kusha grass in hand, He humbly greeted the Asura.
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
शकुनेय भवान् व्यक्तं श्रान्त: किं दूरमागत: ।
क्षणं विश्रम्यतां पुंस: आत्मायं सर्वकामधुक् ॥२९॥
शकुनेय भवान् व्यक्तम्
Shakuni's son, you, is obvious,
श्रान्त: किम् दूरम्-आगत:
are fatigued, have you from far come?
क्षणम् विश्रम्यताम् पुंस:
for a moment, take rest, for men,
आत्मा-अयम् सर्व-काम-धुक्
body this, all desires fulfils
O Shakuni's son, Vrika! It is obvious that You are fatigued. Have you come from far. Do rest for a moment. This body of men, fulfils all desires.
यदि न: श्रवणायालं युष्मद्व्यवसितं विभो ।
भण्यतां प्रायश: पुम्भिर्धृतै: स्वार्थान् समीहते ॥३०॥
यदि न: श्रवणाय-अलम्
if for us to hear is proper,
युष्मत्-व्यवसितम् विभो
Your plan, O mighty one!
भण्यताम् प्रायश: पुम्भि:-
speak, generally by men
धृतै: स्वार्थान् समीहते
chosen, purpose is fulfilled
O mighty one! If your plan of action is worthy of being heard by us, do say, because, generally, the men chosen to help, fulfil the purpose.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं भगवता पृष्टो वचसामृतवर्षिणा ।
गतक्लमोऽब्रवीत्तस्मै यथापूर्वमनुष्ठितम् ॥३१॥
एवम् भगवता पृष्ट:
in this manner, by The Lord asked,
वचसा-अमृत-वर्षिणा
in words nectar raining,
गत-क्लम:-अब्रवीत्-तस्मै
rid of fatigue, said, to Him,
यथा-पूर्वम्-अनुष्ठितम्
as first he had done
In this manner, asked by The Lord, in words raining nectar, he was rid of fatigue, and told to Him from the beginning what he had done.
एवं चेत्तर्हि तद्वाक्यं न वयं श्रद्द्धीमहि ।
यो दक्षशापात् पैशाच्यं प्राप्त: प्रेतपिशाचराट् ॥३२॥
एवम् चेत्-तर्हि तत्-वाक्यम्
so it is, then, His words
न वयम् शद्दधीमहि
not I honour,
य: दक्ष-शापात् पैशाच्यम्
who, by Daksha's curse, Pishaachas (evil spirits) ways
प्राप्त: प्रेत-पिशाच-राट्
has adopted, is the Pretas (genii) and Pishaachas' Ruler
If it is so, then, I do not honour his words. By the curse of Daksha, he has adopted the ways of the Pishaachas, and is the ruler of the Pretas and Pishaachas.
यदि वस्तत्र विश्रम्भो दानवेन्द्र जगद्गुरौ ।
तर्ह्यङ्गाशु स्वशिरसि हस्तं न्यस्य प्रतीयताम् ॥३३॥
यदि व:-तत्र विश्रम्भ:
if you there believe,
दानवेन्द्र जगत्-गुरौ
O demon king! In the world's preceptor,
तर्हि-अङ्ग-आशु स्व-शिरसि
then, O Dear! Soon on own head
हस्तम् न्यस्य प्रतीयताम्
hand placing verify
O king of the demons! If you trust in him, as the preceptor of the world, then, O Dear! Just now place your hand on your head and verify the truth.
यद्यसत्यं वच: शम्भो: कथञ्चिद् दानवर्षभ ।
तदैनं जह्यसद्वाचं न यद् वक्तानृतं पुन: ॥३४॥
यदि-असत्यम् वच: शम्भो:
if false is the word of Shankara,
कथञ्चिद् दानव-ऋषभ
somehow, O Demon Chief!
तत्-एनम् जहि-असत्-वाचम्
that this kill, untruth speaker
न यत् वक्ता-अनृतम् पुन:
not so that, will speak falsehood again
If the words of Shankara prove to be false, O Chief of the demons! Somehow, kill him, the speaker of untruth, so that he may never again utter falsehood.
इत्थं भगवतश्चित्रैर्वचोभि: स सुपेशलै: ।
भिन्नधीर्विस्मृत: शीर्ष्णि स्वहस्तं कुमतिर्व्यधात् ॥३५॥
इत्थम् भगवत:-चित्रै:-
in this manner, by The Lord's floral
वचोभि: स: सुपेशलै:
words, he, very sweet,
भिन्न-धी:-विस्मृत: शीर्ष्णि
loosing reasoning, forgot, on the head
स्व-हस्तम् कुमति:-व्यधात्
own hand evil minded, placed
In this manner, ensnared by the sweet floral words of The Lord, the evil minded demon, forgot his reasoning and placed on the head his own hand.
अथापतद् भिन्नशिरा वज्राहत इव क्षणात् ।
जयशब्दो नम:शब्द: साधुशब्दोऽभवद् दिवि ॥३६॥
अथ-अपतत् भिन्न-शिरा
then, fell down shattered head,
वज्र-आहत इव क्षणात्
thunderbolt struck like, instantly,
जय-शब्द:-नम:शब्द:
'Hail!' word, 'Salutation' word,
साधु-शब्द:-अभवत् दिवि
’Well done' word resounded in the heavens
Then, as if struck by a thunderbolt, he fell down, instantly, with his head shattered. The words, 'Hail, Salutations!, and Well done!', resounded in the heavens.
मुमुचु: पुष्पवर्षाणि हते पापे वृकासुरे ।
देवर्षिपितृगन्धर्वा मोचित: सङ्कटाच्छिव: ॥३७॥
मुमुचु: पुष्प-वर्षाणि
shed, flower rains,
हते पापे वृकासुरे
on being killed the sinful Vrikaasura,
देवर्षि-पितृ-गन्धर्वा:
the divine sages, manes and Gandharvas,
मोचित: सङ्कटात्-शिव:
on the liberation from trouble Shiva
On the occasion of the sinful Vrikaasura being killed, and Lord Shiva being saved from trouble, the divine sages, manes and Gandharvas, showered rains of flowers.
मुक्तं गिरिशमभ्याह भगवान् पुरुषोत्तम: ।
अहो देव महादेव पापोऽयं स्वेन पाप्मना ॥३८॥
मुक्तम् गिरिशम्-अभ्याह
to the freed Lord Shiva, said,
भगवान् पुरुषोत्तम:
The Almighty Lord Vishnu
अहो देव महादेव
'O Lord! O Supreme Deity!
पाप:-अयम् स्वेन पाप्मना
sinful this, by own sins is killed'
The Almighty Lord Vishnu said to the freed Lord Shiva's Lord! O Supreme Deity! This sinful Asura is killed by his own sins.'
हत: को नु महत्स्वीश जन्तुर्वै कृतकिल्विष: ।
क्षेमी स्यात् किमु विश्वेशे कृतागस्को जगद्गुरौ ॥३९॥
हत: क: नु महत्सु-ईश
is killed, who indeed to the noble, O Lord!
जन्तु:-वै कृत-किल्विष:
being surely having sinned,
क्षेमी स्यात् किमु विश्व-ईशे
happy be, what towards the world's Ruler
कृत-आगस्क: जगत्-गुरौ
having committed sin, to the world's preceptor
O Lord! He is killed, Which being, indeed, having erred towards the noble, can be happy? What of then the one who commits wrong towards the world's Ruler, The world's preceptor?
य एवमव्याकृतशक्त्युदन्वत: परस्य साक्षात् परमात्मनो हरे: ।
गिरित्रमोक्षं कथयेच्छृणोति वा विमुच्यते संसृतिभिस्तथारिभि: ॥४०॥
य: एवम्-अव्याकृत
who ever, incomprehensible
शक्ति-उदन्वत: परस्य
power ocean, of the Supreme,
साक्षात् परमात्मन: हरे:
direct, The Supreme Spirit, Shree Hari
गिरित्र-मोक्षम् कथयेत्-
of Shiva's rescue, tells,
शृणोति वा विमुच्यते
listens to or, is freed
संसृतिभि:-तथा-अरिभि:
from transmigration and from enemies
Who-so-ever, relates or listens to this incomprehensible story of the rescue of Shiva by Shree Hari, The ocean of power, Himself beyond Prakriti, The Supreme Spirit, is freed from the cycle of birth and death, and from the fear of enemies.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे परमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे रुद्रमोक्षणं नाम अष्टाशीतितम: अध्याय: ॥८८॥
Thus ends the eighty-eighth discourse entitled 'Lord Rudra rescued (from trouble),' in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
