श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
सरस्वत्यास्तटे राजन्नृषय: सत्रमासत ।
वितर्क: समभूत्तेषां त्रिष्वधीशेषु को महान् ॥१॥
सरस्वत्या:-तटे राजन्-
on Sarasvati's bank, O King!
ऋषय: सत्रम्-आसत
of the sages was a congregation
वितर्क: समभूत्-तेषाम्
discussion arose among them
त्रिषु-अधीशेषु क: महान्
of the three Rulers who is the greatest
O King! On the bank of river Sarasvati, there was a congregation of the sages. A discussion arose among them, as to who was the greatest of the three Rulers of the world.
तस्य जिज्ञासया ते वै भृगुं ब्रह्मसुतं नृप ।
तज्ज्ञप्त्यै प्रेषयामासु: सोऽभ्यगाद् ब्रह्मण: सभाम् ॥२॥
तस्य जिज्ञासया ते वै
of that question, they, indeed,
भृगुम् ब्रह्म-सुतम् नृप
Bhrigu, Brahmaa's son, O King!
तत्-ज्ञप्त्यै प्रेषयामासु:
that to know, sent for,
स:-अभ्यगात् ब्रह्मण: सभाम्
he went to Brahmaa's court
O King! to know the answer to that question, they indeed sent for Bhrigu, Brahmaa's son, who first went to the court of Brahmaa.
न तस्मै प्रह्वणं स्तोत्रं चक्रे सत्त्वपरीक्षया ।
तस्मै चुक्रोध भगवान् प्रज्वलन् स्वेन तेजसा ॥३॥
न तस्मै प्रह्वणम् स्तोत्रम्
not to him greetings, praises,
चक्रे सत्त्व-परीक्षया
did, to forebearance test
तस्मै चुक्रोध भगवान्
on him was enraged, The Lord,
प्रज्वलन् स्वेन तेजसा
burning with his own glow
To test his forbearance, he did not greet Him, nor did he sing His praises. Enraged at him, he looked like burning in His own glow.
स आत्मन्युत्थितं मन्युमात्मजायात्मना प्रभु: ।
अशीशमद् यथा वह्निं स्वयोन्या वारिणाऽऽत्मभू: ॥४॥
स: आत्मनि-उत्थितम् मन्युम्-
he, in himself arising anger
आत्मजाय-आत्मना प्रभु:
for the son, by himself, the capable,
अशीशमद् यथा वह्निम्
pacified, just as the fire
स्व-योन्या वारिणाम्-आत्मभू:
by own evolute, water, self born (Brahmaa)
He, the capable, pacified his rising anger for his son, by himself, just as the self rising fire is put out by its own evolute the waters.
तत: कैलासमगमत् स तं देवो महेश्वर: ।
परिरब्धुं समारेभे उत्थाय भ्रातरं मुदा ॥५॥
तत: कैलासम्-अगमत्
then, to Kailaasha went,
स: तम् देव: महेश्वर:
him, that lord Maheshvara,
परिरब्धुम् समारेभे
to embrace proceeded
उत्थाय भ्रातरम् मुदा
getting up, the brother, with delight
Then, he went to Kailaasha. There, The Lord Maheshvara, seeing him, with delight, arose to embrace him, the brother.
नैच्छत्त्वमस्युत्पथग इति देवश्चुकोप ह ।
शूलमुद्यम्य तं हन्तुमारेभे तिग्मलोचन: ॥६॥
न-ऐच्छत्-त्वम्-असि-उत्पथग
did not want, 'You are wrong path treader',
इति देव:-चुकोप ह
thus, the Lord enraged, surely,
शूलम्-उद्यम्य तम् हन्तुम्-
trident taking up, him to kill
आरेभे तिग्मलोचन:
proceeded the burning eyed
The sage Bhrigu did not want his embrace. He said, 'You tread on wrong paths', thus. With burning eyes, the enraged Lord took up His trident and proceeded to kill him.
पतित्वा पादयोर्देवी सान्त्वयामास तं गिरा ।
अथो जगाम वैकुण्ठं यत्र देवो जनार्दन: ॥७॥
पतित्वा पादयो:-देवी
falling on the feet, the goddess,
सान्त्वयामास तम् गिरा
pacified Him with words,
अथ: जगाम वैकुण्ठम्
after that, went to Vaikuntha,
यत्र देव: जनार्दन:
where The Lord Vishnu is
The goddess Paarvati fell on His feet and pacified Him with words. Then, the sage went to Vaikuntha, where The Lord Vishnu is.
शयानं श्रिय उत्सङ्गे पदा वक्षस्यताडयत् ।
तत उत्थाय भगवान् सह लक्ष्म्या सतां गति: ॥८॥
शयानम् श्रिय उत्सङ्गे
sleeping, on Goddess Shree's lap,
पदा वक्षसि-अताडयत्
by foot on the chest hit,
तत: उत्थाय भगवान्
then, arising, The Lord,
सह लक्ष्म्या सताम् गति:
with Goddess Laxmi, of the virtuous The Resort,
He was sleeping on the lap of Goddess, Laxmi. Bhrigu hit Him on the chest with his foot. The Lord, The Resort of the virtuous, arose with Goddess Laxmi,….
स्वतल्पादवरुह्याथ ननाम् शिरसा मुनिम् ।
आह ते स्वागतं ब्रह्मन् निषीदात्रासने क्षणम् ।
अजानतामागतान् व: क्षन्तुमर्हथ न: प्रभो ॥९॥
स्व-तल्पात्-अवरुह्य-अथ
from own bed getting down then,
ननाम शिरसा मुनिम्
bowed with head down to the sage,
आह ते स्वागतम् ब्रह्मन्
said, 'You are welcome, O lord!
निषीद-अत्र-आसने क्षणम्
rest here, on the seat, for a while,
अजानताम्-आगतान् व:
not knowing of coming your,
क्षन्तुम्-अर्हथ न: प्रभो
to pardon capable, us, are, O great one!
Alighting from His own bed, He bowed to the sage with His head. And said, ' O lord! Do rest on this seat for a while. Not knowing of your arrival, we failed to receive you. O great one, capable of everything, do pardon us our mistake.'
अतीव कोमलौ तात चरणौ ते महामुने ।
इत्युक्त्वा विप्रचरणौ मर्दयन् स्वेन पाणिना ॥१०॥
अतीव कोमलौ तात
very delicate, O Dear!
चरणौ ते महामुने
feet your O great sage,'
इति-उक्त्वा विप्र-चरणौ
so saying, the Braahmana's feet
मर्दयन् स्वेन पाणिना
massaged with His own hands
'O Dear! O great sage! Your feet are very delicate.' So saying He massaged the feet of the Braahmana with His own hands.
पुनीह सहलोकं मां लोकपालांश्च मद्गतान् ।
पादोदकेन भवतस्तीर्थानां तीर्थकारिणा ॥११॥
पुनीह सह-लोकम् माम्
sanctify along with the worlds, Me,
लोकपालन्-च मत्-गतान्
the gaurdians and in Me residing,
पाद-उदकेन भवत:-
with feet water your's
तीर्थानाम् तीर्थ-कारिणा
to the pilgrimages sanctity rendering
Do sanctify Me, along with the worlds, and the guardians who reside in Me. The waters of your feet sanctify even the pilgrimages.
अद्याहं भगवल्लँक्ष्म्या आसमेकान्तभाजनम् ।
वत्स्यत्युरसि मे भूतिर्भवत्पादहतांहस: ॥१२॥
अद्य-अहम् भगवन्-लक्ष्म्या
today, I, O lord! Of Laxmi
आसम्-एकान्त-भाजनम्
have become the sole abode
वत्स्यति-उरसि मे
will remain on the chest Mine
भूति:-भवत्-पाद-हत-अंहस:
has become, by your feet touched, sinless
'O lord! Today, My chest has become the sole abode of Laxmi, she will always remain here, as My chest has become sinless, hit by your feet.'
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं ब्रुवाणे वैकुण्ठे भृगुस्तन्मन्द्रया गिरा ।
निर्वृतस्तर्पितस्तूष्णीं भक्त्युत्कण्ठोऽश्रुलोचन: ॥१३॥
एवम् ब्रुवाणे वैकुण्ठे
so being told, in Vaikuntha,
भृगु:-तत्-मन्द्रया गिरा
Bhrigu, that, by His grave voice,
निर्वृत:-तर्पित:-तूष्णीम्
was satisfied, happy, quiet
भक्ति-उत्कण्ठ:-अश्रु-लोचन:
by devotion choked, and tearful eyes
In Vaikuntha, when Vishnu thus said, in His grave voice, to Bhrigu, he was very satisfied and happy. His voice choked with devotion and his eyes became tearful.
पुनश्च सत्रमाव्रज्य मुनीनां ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ।
स्वानुभूतमशेषेण राजन् भृगुरवर्णयत् ॥१४॥
पुन:-च सत्रम्-आव्रज्य
again, and to the congregation returning
मुनीनाम् ब्रह्म-वादिनाम्
to the sage, of the Vedas the expositors
स्व-अनुभूतम्-अशेषेण
own experience, in detail
राजन् भृगु:-अवर्णयत्
O King! Bhrigu described
O King! Returning to the congregation of the sages, the expositors of the Vedas, Bhrigu described in detail, his experiences.
तन्निशम्याथ मुनयो विस्मिता मुक्तसंशया: ।
भूयांसं श्रद्दधुर्विष्णुं यत: शान्तिर्यतोऽभयम् ॥१५॥
तत्-निशम्य-अथ मुनय:
that hearing, then, the sages
विस्मिता: मुक्त-संशया:
surprised, freed of doubt,
भूयांसम् श्रद्दधु:-विष्णुम्
again honoured Vishnu
यत: शान्ति:-यत:-अभयम्
from (where) peace, from (where) fearless-ness
Then, hearing this, the sages were surprised and were freed of doubt. They again reposed faith in Vishnu, from where there is peace and from where there is fearless-ness.
धर्म: साक्षाद् यतो ज्ञानं वैराग्यं च तदन्वितम् ।
ऐश्वर्य चाष्टधा यस्माद् यशश्चात्ममलापहम् ॥१६॥
धर्म: साक्षाद् यत: ज्ञानम्
righteousness, itself, from where wisdom,
वैराग्यम् च तत्-अन्वितम्
dispassion, and from Him eminates
ऐश्वर्य च-अष्टधा यस्मात्
the powers and eight from Whom,
यश:-च-आत्म-मल-अपहम्
fame and of self impurities wiping
From where righteousness itself, wisdom and dispassion emanate, from Whom the eight supernatural powers come, and fame, by which the impurities of the self are wiped out.
मुनीनां न्यस्तदण्डानां शान्तानां समचेतसाम् ।
अकिञ्चनानां साधूनां यमाहु: परमां गतिम् ॥१७॥
मुनीनाम् न्यस्त-दण्डानाम्
of the sages, non-violent,
शान्तानाम् सम-चेतसाम्
peaceful, having equanimity
अकिञ्चनानाम् साधूनाम्
detached, the saints,
यम्-आहु: परमाम् गतिम्
Who is said to be The Supreme Resort
Who is said to be The Supreme Resort of the sages and saints, who are non-violent, peaceful, having equanimity, and are detached.
सत्त्वं यस्य प्रिया मूर्तिर्ब्राह्मणास्त्विष्टदेवता: ।
भजन्त्यनाशिष: शान्ता यं वा निपुणबुद्धय: ॥१८॥
सत्त्वम् यस्य प्रिया मूर्ति:-
Sattva constituted is Whose dear form,
ब्राह्मणा:-तु-इष्ट-देवता:
Braahmanas are, indeed the dear dieties,
भजन्ति-अनाशिष: शान्ता:
worship the detached, tranquil minded,
यम् वा निपुण-बुद्धय:
Whom, or sharp understanding
Whose form is constituted of Sattva, and Braahmanas are Whose dear deities, Whom men of detached and tranquil mind, and sharp understanding worship.
त्रिविधाकृतयस्तस्य राक्षसा असुरा: सुरा: ।
गुणिन्या मायया सृष्टा: सत्त्वं तत्तीर्थसाधनम् ॥१९॥
त्रि-विध-आकृतय:-तस्य
three types forms are His,
राक्षसा: असुरा: सुरा:
Raakshasa, Asuras, and gods,
गुणिन्या: मायया सृष्टा:
the gods, by Maayaa evolved,
सत्त्वम् तत्-तीर्थ-साधनम्
Saatvic, Him to attain the means
By His Maaya, His three types of forms, Raakshasha's, Asuras and gods are evolved, of which the gods are Saatvic and are the means to attain Him.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं सारस्वता विप्रा नृणां संशयनुत्तये ।
पुरुषस्य पदाम्भोजसेवया तद्गतिं गता: ॥२०॥
एवम् सारस्वता: विप्रा:
thus, on the bank of Sarasvati, the Braahmanas
नृणाम् संशय-नुत्तये
of the people the doubt to dispell
पुरुषस्य पद-अम्भोज-
of The Person feet lotus
सेवया तत्-गतिम् गता:
service, His state gained
Thus concluded, the Braahmanas on the bank of Sarasvati, to dispel the doubts of men. By the service of the lotus feet of The Supreme Person, they attained His supreme state.
सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
इत्येतन्मुनितनयास्यपद्मगन्धपीयूषं भवभयभित् परस्य पुंस: ।
सुश्लोकं श्रवणपुटै: पिबत्यभीक्ष्णं पान्थोऽध्वभ्रमणपरिश्रमं जहाति ॥२१॥
इति-एतत्-मुनि-तनय-
So, this, by the sage's son's,
आस्य-पद्म-गन्ध-पीयूषम्
mouth lotus smelling nectar,
भव-भय-भित् परस्य पुंस:
mundane world's fear shattering, of The Supreme Person,
सुश्लोकम् श्रवण-पुटै: पिबति-
well famed, by the ear cups, drinks
अभीक्ष्णम् पान्थ:-
constantly, that traveller
अध्व-भ्रमण-परिश्रमम् जहाति
on the paths treading fatigue, sheds
So, this story of The Supreme Person, which shatters the fear of the mundane world, which has emanated from the lotus mouth of the son (Shukadeva) of the sage (Vyaas), and is like a sweet smelling nectar, whoever constantly drinks through his ear cups, that traveller of the paths of the world, sheds all his fatigue.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एकदा द्वारवत्यां तु विप्रपत्न्या: कुमारक: ।
जातमात्रो भुवं स्पृष्ट्वा ममार किल भारत ॥२२॥
एकदा द्वारवत्याम् तु
one day, in Dvaarakaa, indeed,
विप्र-पत्न्या: कुमारक:
a Braahmana's wife's child,
जात-मात्र: भुवम् स्पृष्ट्वा
born just, the earth touching,
ममार किल भारत
died, indeed, O Bhaarata!
O Bhaarata! one day, in Dwaarakaa, indeed, a Braahmana's wife's child, who was just born, touched the ground and died.
विप्रो गृहीत्वा मृतकं राजद्वार्युपधाय स: ।
इदं प्रोवाच विलपन्नातुरो दीनमानस: ॥२३॥
विप्र: गृहीत्वा मृतकम्
the Braahmana, taking the dead
राज-द्वारि-उपधाय स:
to the royal gate, placing he
इदम् प्रोवाच विलपन्-
this said wailing,
आतुर: दीन-मानस:
in agony, grief full heart
The Braahmana took the dead child to the royal gate, and placing him there, said, wailing in agony, his heart full of grief,…
ब्रह्मद्विष: शठधियो लुब्धस्य विषयात्मन: ।
क्षत्रबन्धो: कर्मदोषात् पञ्चत्वं मे गतोऽर्भक: ॥२४॥
ब्रह्म-द्विष: शठ-धिय:
Braahmana's hater, wicked minded,
लुब्धस्य विषय-आत्मन:
greedy, in sense pleasures indulging himself
क्षत्र-बन्धो: कर्म-दोषात्
Kshatriya person's action vile,
पञ्चत्वम् मे गत:-अर्भक:
to death, my, has gone, the child
By the vile actions of a Braahmana hater, wicked minded, greedy, himself indulging in sense pleasures, a baseless Kshatriya king, my child has died.
हिंसाविहारं नृपतिं दु:शीलमजितेन्द्रियम् ।
प्रजा भजन्त्य: सीदन्ति दरिद्रा नित्यदु:खिता: ॥२५॥
हिंसा-विहारम् नृपतिम्
in violence engaged, the king,
दु:शीलम्-अजित-इन्द्रियम्
of cruel disposition, of uncontrolled senses,
प्रजा भजन्त्य: सीदन्ति
the public depending on, suffer,
दरिद्रा: नित्य-दु:खिता:
the poor are always sorrowful
The public suffers, and the poor are always sorrowful, for depending on a king who is engaged in violence, has a cruel disposition, and has no control over his senses.
एवं द्वितीयं विप्रर्षिस्तृतीयं त्वेवमेव च ।
विसृज्य स नृपद्वारि तां गाथां समगायत ॥२६॥
एवम् द्वितीयम् विप्रर्षि:-तृतीयम्
thus, the second, the Braahmana sage, third,
तु-एवम्-एव च
indeed, like this only, and
विसृज्य स: नृप-द्वारि
abondoning he, on the king's gate,
ताम् गाथाम् समगायत
that story repeated
In this manner, the Braahmana sage took the second and the third child and abandoning it on the king's gate, repeated the same story.
तामर्जुन उपश्रुत्य कर्हिचित् केशवान्तिके ।
परेते नवमे बाले ब्राह्मणं समभाषत ॥२७॥
ताम्-अर्जुन उपश्रुत्य
that, Arjuna having heard,
कर्हिचित् केशव-अन्तिके
sometime, Keshava's near,
परेते नवमे बाले
on the death of the ninth child
ब्राह्मणम् समभाषत
to the Braahmana said
At sometime, when Arjuna was near Keshava, he heard that story. On the death of the ninth child, he said to the Braahmana,…..
किंस्विद् ब्रह्मंस्त्वन्निवासे इह नास्ति धनुर्धर: ।
राजन्यबन्धुरेते वै ब्राह्मणा: सत्र आसते ॥२८॥
किंस्विद् ब्रह्मन्-त्वत्-निवासे
is it, O Holy one! In Your residence
इह न-अस्ति धनु:-धर:
here, not is bow wielder
राजन्यबन्धु:-एते वै
the Kshatriyas these, indeed,
ब्राह्मणा: सत्र आसते
as Braahmanas in congregation are
'O Holy one! Is it that there is no bow wielder here in your residing town? The Kshatriyas, here, are also like the Braahmanas, sitting in congregation.'
धनदारात्मजापृक्ता यत्र शोचन्ति ब्राह्मणा: ।
ते वै राजन्यवेषेण नटा जीवन्त्यसुम्भरा: ॥२९॥
धन-दारा-आत्मज-अपृक्ता:
wealth, wife, sons deprived of
यत्र शोचन्ति ब्राह्मणा:
where are sorrowful the Braahmanas,
ते वै राजन्य-वेषेण
they indeed in royal garb
नटा: जीवन्ति-असुम्-भरा:
are actors, living belly fillers
Where the Braahmanas are sorrowful, deprived of their wealth, wife and children. They indeed are actors in the garb of Kshatriyas, who live to fill their belly.
अहं प्रजा वां भगवन् रक्षिष्ये दीनयोरिह ।
अनिस्तीर्णप्रतिज्ञोऽग्निं प्रवेक्ष्ये हतकल्मष: ॥३०॥
अहम् प्रजा वाम् भगवन्
I, children of you two, O lord!
रक्षिष्ये दीनयो:-इह
will protect, of the helpless, here,
अनिस्तीर्ण-प्रतिज्ञ:-
not fulfilling the promise,
अग्निम् प्रवेक्ष्ये हत-कल्मष:
fire will enter, atoning for the sin
'O lord! I will protect the children of you both, who are helpless. If I do not fulfil the promise, I will enter the fire, and atone for the sin.
ब्राह्मण उवाच -
The Braahmana said -
सङ्कर्षणो वासुदेव: प्रद्युम्नो धन्विनां वर: ।
अनिरुद्धोऽप्रतिरथो न त्रातुं शक्नुवन्ति यत् ॥३१॥
सङ्कर्षण:-वासुदेव:
'Balarama, Vaasudeva,
प्रद्युम्न: धन्विनाम् वर:
Pradyumna, of the archers' the foremost,
अनिरुद्ध:-अप्रतिरथ:
Aniruddha, Apratiratha,
न त्रातुम् शक्नुवन्ति यत्
not to protect are capable, that
'That which, Balaraama, Vaasudeva, Aniruddha, Apratiratha, Pradyumna, the foremost of the archers' , are not capable to protect,….
तत् कथं नु भवान् कर्म दुष्करं जगदीश्वरै: ।
चिकीर्षसि त्वं बालिश्यात् तन्न श्रद्दध्महे वयम् ॥३२॥
तत् कथम् नु भवान्
then, how, indeed, you,
कर्म दुष्करम् जगत्-ईश्वरै:
the task difficult for the worlds' rulers
चिकीर्षसि त्वम् बालिश्यात्
want to do you, foolishly,
तत्-न श्रद्दध्महे वयम्
that, do not appreciate we
Then how indeed do you propose to do this task which is difficult even for the worlds' rulers. You brag foolishly, which we do not appreciate.
अर्जुन उवाच -
Arjuna said -
नाहं सङ्कर्षणो ब्रह्मन् न कृष्ण: कार्ष्णिरेव च ।
अहं वा अर्जुनो नाम गाण्डीवं यस्य वै धनु: ॥३३॥
न-अहम् सङ्कर्षण: ब्रह्मन्
not I am Balaraama,
न कृष्ण: कार्ष्णि:-एव च
nor Krishna, Kaarshnee also and,
अहम् वा अर्जुन: नाम
I am or Arjuna by name,
गाण्डीवम् यस्य वै धनु:
Gaandeeva whose indeed is the bow
O Brahman! I am not Balaraama, nor Krishna, and also not Kaarshnee. I am Arjuna by name, whose bow is Gaandeeva.
मावमंस्था मम ब्रह्मन् वीर्यं त्र्यम्बकतोषणम् ।
मृत्युं विजित्य प्रधने आनेष्ये ते प्रजां प्रभो ॥३४॥
मा-अवमंस्था मम ब्रह्मन्
do not insult my, O Brahman!
वीर्यम् त्र्यम्बक-तोषणम्
valour, Shankara satisfying,
मृत्युम् विजित्य प्रधने
death conquering in battle,
आनेष्ये ते प्रजाम् प्रभो
will bring back your progeny, O lord!
O Brahman! Do not insult my valour, which pleases even Lord Shankara. Fighting Death in battle, I will bring back your progeny.
एवं विश्रम्भितो विप्र: फाल्गुनेन परंतप ।
जगाम स्वगृहं प्रीत: पार्थवीर्यं निशामयन् ॥३५॥
एवम् विश्रम्भित: विप्र:
thus reassured, the Braahmana,
फाल्गुनेन परंतप
by Arjuna, O Pareekshit!
जगाम स्व-गृहम् प्रीत:
went to his house, happily
पार्थ-वीर्यम् निशामयन्
Arjuna's valour awaiting to witness
O Pareekshit! The Braahmana, thus assured by Arjuna, happily returned to his house, eagerly awaiting to witness Arjuna's valour.
प्रसूतिकाल आसन्ने भार्याया द्विजसत्तम: ।
पाहि पाहि प्रजां मृत्योरित्याहार्जुनमातुर: ॥३६॥
प्रसूति-काल आसन्ने
delivery time having approached
भार्याया: द्विज-सत्तम:
of the wife, the Braahamana exalted,
पाहि पाहि प्रजाम् मृत्यो:-
'Protect, protect, my child, from death'
इति-आह-अर्जुनम्-आतुर:
thus entreated to Arjuna anxciously
When the delivery time of his wife approached, the exalted Braahmana, anxiously entreated Arjuna, calling, 'Oh! Protect my child from death.'
स उपस्पृश्य शुच्यम्भो नमस्कृत्य महेश्वरम् ।
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि संस्मृत्य सज्यं गाण्डीवमाददे ॥३७॥
स: उपस्पृश्य शुचि-अम्भ:
he, sipped pure water,
नमस्कृत्य महेश्वरम्
bowed to Lord Shankara,
दिव्यानि-अस्त्राणि संस्मृत्य
the divine weapons invoked,
सज्यम् गाण्डीवम्-आददे
the strung Gaandeeva took up
Arjuna, sipped pure water, and bowed to Lord Shankara, then invoking the divine weapons, he took up the well strung Gaandeeva bow.
न्यरुणत् सूतिकागारं शरैर्नानास्त्रयोजितै: ।
तिर्यगूर्ध्वमध: पार्थश्चकार शरपञ्जरम् ॥३८॥
न्यरुणत् सूतिका-आगारम्
blocked the confinement room
शरै:-नाना-अस्त्र-योजितै:
with arrows, with various weapons deployed,
तिर्यक्-ऊर्ध्वम्-अध:
sideways, above, below,
पार्थ:-चकार शर-पञ्जरम्
Arjuna made arrows' cage
Arjuna blocked the confinement room on all sides, above and below, with arrows deployed with various weapons, and made a cage of arrows.
तत: कुमार: संजातो विप्रपत्न्या रुदन् मुहु: ।
सद्योऽदर्शनमापेदे सशरीरो विहायसा ॥३९॥
तत: कुमार: संजात:
then a baby boy was born
विप्र-पत्न्या: रुदन् मुहु:
to the Braahmana's wife, crying again and again,
सद्य:-अदर्शनम्-आपेदे
immediately out of sight became
स-शरीर: विहायसा
with the body, in the sky
Then, to the Braahmana's wife a baby boy was born, who cried again and again. Soon, it went out of sight with the body, and disappeared in the sky.
तदाऽऽह विप्रो विजयं विनिन्दन् कृष्णसन्निधौ ।
मौढ्यं पश्यत मे योऽहं श्रद्दधे क्लीबकत्थनम् ॥४०॥
तदा-आह विप्र: विजयम्
then, said, the Braahmana to Arjuna,
विनिन्दन् कृष्ण-सन्निधौ
dispising, in Krishna's presence,
मौढ्यम् पश्यत मे य:-अहम्
stupidity see mine, that I
श्रद्दधे क्लीब-कत्थनम्
believed in the eunuch's words
Then the Braahmana, despising Arjuna in the presence of Krishna said, 'Look at my stupidity, that I believed the words of a eunuch.'
न प्रद्युम्नो नानिरुद्धो न रामो च केशव: ।
यस्य शेकु: परित्रातुं कोऽन्यस्तदवितेश्वर: ॥४१॥
न प्रद्युम्न: न-अनिरुद्ध:
not Pradyumna, nor Aniruddha,
न राम: च केशव:
not Balaraam, and Krishna,
यस्य शेकु: परित्रातुम्
whom were able to protect
क:-अन्य:-तत्-अवित:-ईश्वर:
who other, his saviour, the powerful
Whom Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Balaraama and even Krishna were not able to protect, who another saviour is powerful enough to save him?
धिगर्जुनं मृषावादं धिगात्मश्लाघिनो धनु: ।
दैवोपसृष्टं यो मौढ्यादानिनीषति दुर्मति: ॥४२॥
धिक्-अर्जुनम् मृषा-वादम्
fie upon Arjuna, false speaker,
धिक्-आत्म-श्लाघिन: धनु:
fie upon the self-priding bow,
दैव-उपसृष्टम् य: मौढ्यात्-
by Providence, who foolishly
आनिनीषति दुर्मति:
snatched, the dull minded
Fie upon Arjuna, the false speaker, fie upon the self-priding bow, who foolishly wants to bring back that what is snatched by Providence.
एवं शपति विप्रर्षौ विद्यामास्थाय फाल्गुन: ।
ययौ संयमनीमाशु यत्रास्ते भगवान् यम: ॥४३॥
एवम् शपति विप्र-ऋषौ
thus, cursed the Braahmana sage,
विद्याम्-आस्थाय फाल्गुन:
charms relying on, Arjuna,
ययौ संयमनीम्-आशु
went to Samyamanee, quickly,
यत्र-आस्ते भगवान् यम:
where lives The lord Yama
As the Braahmana sage thus cursed, Arjuna, relying on mystical powers, quickly went to Samyamanee, where the lord Yama lives.
विप्रापत्यमचक्षाणस्तत ऐन्द्रीमगात् पुरीम् ।
आग्नेयीं नैऋतीं सोम्यां वायव्यां वारणीमथ ।
रसातलं नाकपृष्ठं धिष्ण्यान्यन्यान्युदायुध: ॥४४॥
विप्र-अपत्यम्-अचक्षाण:-तत:
the Braahmana's son, not seeing, from there
ऐन्द्रीम्-अगात् पुरीम्
Indra's came to cities,
आग्नेयीम् नैऋतीम् सोम्याम्
of Fire, of Death, of Moon,
वायव्याम् वारणीम्-अथ
of Wind, of Water, then
रसातलम् नाकपृष्ठम्
to Rasaatala, to Naakaprishtha,
धिष्ण्यानि-अन्यानि-उत्-आयुध:
places others, indeed with weapons
Not finding the son of the Braahmana, there, he went to the cities of Indra, from there, to the abode of Fire, then to the abode of Death, Moon, Wind, Water, then to Rasaatala, Naakatala, and to other places, indeed with weapons.
ततोऽलब्धद्विजसुतो ह्यनिस्तीर्णप्रतिश्रुत: ।
अग्निं विविक्षु: कृष्णेन प्रत्युक्त: प्रतिषेधता ॥४५॥
तत:-अलब्ध-द्विज-सुत:
then, not finding the Braahmana's son,
हि-अनिस्तीर्ण-प्रतिश्रुत:
indeed not fulfilling the promise,
अग्निम् विविक्षु: कृष्णेन
in fire to enter wanting, by Krishna
प्रत्युक्त: प्रतिषेधता
was told, dettereddettered
Then, because of not finding the son of the Braahmana, and so for not having fulfilled his promise, Arjuna wanted to enter the fire. He was deterred by Krishna and was told by Him,….
दर्शये द्विजसूनूंस्ते मावज्ञात्मानमात्मना ।
ये ते न: कीर्तिं विमलां मनुष्या: स्थापयिष्यन्ति ॥४६॥
दर्शये द्विज-सूनून्-ते
will show the Braahmana sons to you
मा-अवज्ञ-आत्मानम्-आत्मना
do not dispise yourself by yourself
ये ते न: कीर्तिम् विमलाम्
those they our glory (tarnish) spotless,
मनुष्या: स्थापयिष्यन्ति
the men will re-affirm it
Do not despise yourself by yourself, I will show to you the sons of the Braahmana. Those men who tarnish our spotless glory will re-affirm it.
इति संभाष्य भगवानर्जुनेन सहेश्वर: ।
दिव्यं स्वरथमास्थाय प्रतीचीं दिशमाविशत् ॥४७॥
इति संभाष्य भगवान्-
so saying, The Lord,
अर्जुनेन सह-ईश्वर:
Arjuna with, The All-mighty
दिव्यम् स्व-रथम्-आस्थाय
divine own chariot mounting
प्रतीचीम् दिशम्-आविशत्
the west direction proceeded to
Thus pacifying Arjuna, The Almighty Lord Krishna, with Arjuna mounted His own divine chariot and proceeded to the western direction.
सप्त द्वीपान् सप्त सिन्धून् सप्तसप्तगिरीनथ ।
लोकालोकं तथातीत्य विवेश सुमहत्तम: ॥४८॥
सप्त द्वीपान् सप्त सिन्धून्
seven islands, seven oceans,
सप्त-सप्त-गिरीन्-अथ
seven each mountains, then
लोकालोकम् तथा-अतीत्य
the Lokaaloka also crossing over,
विवेश सुमहत्-तम:
entered the great darkness
They crossed over the seven islands with seven mountains each, the seven oceans, then the region of the Lokaaloka mountain, and entered the region of great darkness.
तत्राश्वा: शैब्यसुग्रीवमेघपुष्पबलाहका: ।
तमसि भ्रष्टगतयो बभूवुर्भरतर्षभ ॥४९॥
तत्र-अश्वा: शैब्य-सुग्रीव-
there, the horses, Shaivya, Sugreeva,
मेघपुष्प-बलाहका:
Meghapushpa, Balaahaka,
तमसि भ्रष्ट-गतय:
in the darkness, lost way,
बभूवु:-भरत-ऋषभ
became, O Scion of the Bharatas!
O Scion of the Bharatas! Pareekshita! There in the darkness, the horses, Shaivya, Sugreeva, Meghapushpa, Balaahaka, lost their way in the darkness, and were way laid.
तान् दृष्ट्वा भगवान् कृष्णो महायोगेश्वरेश्वर: ।
सहस्रादित्यसंकाशं स्वचक्रं प्राहिणोत् पुर: ॥५०॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा भगवान् कृष्ण:
them seeing, Lord Krishna,
महा-योगेश्वर-ईश्वर:
of the great yoga masters' The Lord,
सहस्र-आदित्य-संकाशम्
thousands of Suns equal to,
स्व-चक्रम् प्राहिणोत् पुर:
own discus, sent to go in front
Lord Shree Krishna, seeing them, thus, His own discus, shining equal to a thousand Suns, made to go ahead as a guide.
तम: सुघोरं गहनं कृतं महद् विदारयद् भूरितरेण रोचिषा ।
मनोजवं निर्विविशे सुदर्शनं गुणच्युतो रामशरो यथा चमू: ॥५१॥
तम: सुघोरम् गहनम्
darkness, very intense, dense,
कृतम् महद् विदारयद्
made, great, pierced
भूरितरेण रोचिषा
with very enormous light
मनोजवम् निर्विविशे
quick like a thought, entered
सुदर्शम् गुण-च्युत:-
the Sudarshana, from the string discharged
रामशर: यथा चमू:
Raama's arrow, like the army
The discus, Sudarshana, quick like a thought, with its very enormous light, pierced into the very thick and dense darkness, just as Ramaa's arrow discharged from the bow string pierced the army of the Raakshasha's.
द्वारेण चक्रानुपथेन तत्तम: परं परं ज्योतिरनन्तपारम् ।
समश्नुवानं प्रसमीक्ष्य फाल्गुन: प्रताडिताक्षोऽपिदधेऽक्षिणी उभे ॥५२॥
द्वारेण चक्र-अनुपथेन
by the discus pointed, following the path
तत्-तम: परम् परम्
that darkness, end 's end
ज्योति:-अनन्त-पारम्
light, infinite, all pervading,
समश्नुवानम् प्रसमीक्ष्य
dazzling, seeing,
फाल्गुन: प्रताडि-अक्ष:-
Arjuna's hit eyes,
अपिदधे-अक्षिणी उभे
shut the eyes both
Following the path directed by the discus, the chariot reached the end of the darkness, and an infinite all pervading dazzling light shone, which hit the eyes of Arjuna, and he had to shut both his eyes.
तत: प्रविष्ट: सलिलं नभस्वता बलीयसैजद्वृहदूर्मिभूषणम् ।
तत्राद्भुतं तं वै भवनं द्युमत्तमं भ्राजन्मणिस्तम्भसहस्रशोभितम् ॥५३॥
तत: प्रविष्ट: सलिलम्
then, entered the water,
नभस्वता बलीयसा-एजत्-
by storm strong blowing,
बृहत्-ऊर्मि-भूषणम्
with big waves adorned,
तत्र-अद्भुतम् तम् वै
there wonderful, to him indeed,
भवनम् द्युमत्-तमम् भ्राजत्-
palace luminous most shining
मणि-स्तम्भ-सहस्र-शोभितम्
gems studded columns thousands adorned
Then, the chariot entered the water, which had big waves due the strong storm blowing. There, was seen by him, indeed, a wonderful most luminous palace shining, adorned with columns of studded gems.
तस्मिन् महाभीममनन्तमद्भुतं सहस्रमूर्धन्यफणामणिद्युभि: ।
विभ्राजमानं द्विगुणोल्बणेक्षणं सिताचलाभं शितिकण्ठजिह्वम् ॥५४॥
तस्मिन् महा-भीमम्-अनन्तम्-
in that, very huge, endlessly
अद्भुतम् सहस्र-मूर्धनि-अफणा-
wonderful, thousand heads hooded,
मणि-द्युभि: विभ्राजमानम्
gems' radiance shining with,
द्वि-गुण-उल्बण-ईक्षणम्
twice fierce eyed
सित-अचल-आभम्
Kailash mountain like bright,
शिति-कण्ठ-जिह्वम्
blue necked and tongued
In that very huge ocean, was an endlessly wonderful, with thousand hooded heads, which shone with the gems in them, with two fierce eyes, bright like the mount Kailaash, with blue neck and tongue,…
ददर्श तद्भोगसुखासनं विभुं महानुभावं पुरुषोत्तमोत्तमम् ।
सान्द्राम्बुदाभं सुपिशङ्गवाससं प्रसन्नवक्त्रं रुचिरायतेक्षणम् ॥५५॥
ददर्श तत्-भोग-सुख-आसनम्
saw, on his body, comfortable seated
विभुम् महानुभावम्
the All-pervading, with infinte powers,
पुरुषोत्तम-उत्तमम्
The Supreme Person exalted,
सान्द्र-अम्बुद-आभम्
dense clouds' lustre,
सुपिशङ्ग-वाससम् प्रसन्न-
in bright yellow clothed, pleasant
वक्त्रम् रुचिर-आयत-ईक्षणम्
faced, captivating, big eyes
Arjuna saw the All-pervading, infinitely powered, The exalted Supreme Person, with dense clouds like lustre, clad in bright yellow clothes, having a pleasant face and big captivating eyes, comfortably reclining on the body of the Shesha serpent.
महामणिव्रातकिरीटकुण्डलप्रभापरीक्षिप्तसहस्रकुन्तलम् ।
प्रलम्बचार्वष्टभुजं सकौस्तुभं श्रीवत्सलक्ष्मं वनमालया वृतम् ॥५६॥
महा-मणि-व्रात-
precious gems clustered
किरीट-कुण्डल-प्रभा-
crown and ear-rings, shine,
परीक्षिप्त-सहस्र-कुन्तलम्
falling on the thousands of curls
प्रलम्ब-चारु-अष्ट-भुजम्
long charming eight arms,
स-कौस्तुभम् श्रीवत्स-लक्ष्मम्
with the kaustubha gem, Shree-Vatsa marked with,
वन-मालया वृतम्
and sylvan flowers garland adorned with
The shine of the clusters of gems in his crown and ear-rings fell on His thousands of curls. He had eight long charming arms. On His chest was the Kaustubha gem, and was marked with Shree-Vatsa mark, and was surrounded by a garland of sylvan flowers.
सुनन्दनन्दप्रमुखै: स्वपार्षदैश्चक्रादिभिर्मूर्तिधरैर्निजायुधै: ।
पुष्ट्या श्रिया कीर्त्यजयाखिलर्द्धिभिर्निषेव्यमाणं परमेष्ठिनां पतिम् ॥५७॥
सुनन्द-नन्द-प्रमुखै:
Sunanda, Nanda, the main
स्व-पार्षदै:-चक्र-आदिभि:-
own attendents, the discus and other
मूर्ति-धरै:-निज-आयुधै:
persons' form holding, own weapons,
पुष्ट्या श्रिया कीर्ति-
by Pushti (Grace), Sri (Splendour), Kirti (Fame),
अजया-अखिल-ऋद्धिभि:-
Maayaa, and all the Riddhis(Fortunes)
निषेव्यमाणम् परमेष्ठिनाम् पतिम्
being attended of Brahmaa and gaurdians', The Ruler
He saw The Ruler of Brahmaa and the other guardians, being waited upon by His main attendents, Sunanda and Nanda, His own weapons discus and others, in the form of persons, and attended by all the fortunes, (Ridhis), like, Pushti (Grace), Sri (Splendour), Kirti(Fame), and Maayaa.
ववन्द आत्मानमनन्तमच्युतो जिष्णुश्च तद्दर्शनजातसाध्वस: ।
तावाह भूमा परमेष्ठिनां प्रभुर्बद्धाञ्जली सस्मितमूर्जया गिरा ॥५८॥
ववन्द आत्मानम्-अनन्तम्-
bowed to Himself, The Eternal,
अच्युत: जिष्णु:-च
The Infinite (Krishna), Arjuna and,
तत्-दर्शन-जात-साध्वस:
by His sight, was awe struck
तौ-आह भूमा परमेष्ठिनाम्
to both said, The Perfect Person, of Brahmaa
प्रभु:-बद्ध-अञ्जली
The Lord, with folded hands,
सस्मितम्-ऊर्जया गिरा
with a smile and a deep voice
The Infinite Krishna bowed to Himself, Arjuna also, bowed, but was awe struck by His sight. Then the Perfect Person, The Lord of Brahmaa and others, with a smile and in a deep voice, said to them both who stood with folded hands.
द्विजात्मजा मे युवयोर्दिदृक्षुणा मयोपनीता भुवि धर्मगुप्तये ।
कलावतीर्णाववनेर्भरासुरान् हत्वेह भूयस्त्वरयेतमन्ति मे ॥५९॥
द्विज-आत्मजा: मे युवयो:-
the Braahmana's sons, by Me, for you two
दिदृक्षुणा मया-उपनीता:
to see, by Me were brought,
भुवि धर्म-गुप्तये
on the earth for the righteousness to protect,
कला-अवतीर्णौ-अवने:-भर-
by (My) part descended, of the earth's burden,
असुरान् हत्वा-इह भूय:-
the Asuras, having killed, here again,
त्वरया-एतम्-अन्ति मे
soon come, near Me
With My desire to see you both, the sons of the Braahmana were brought here by Me. Both of you, with part manifestations have descended on the earth to protect righteousness. Also relieve the earth from its burden by killing the Asuras, and come back here to Me.
पूर्णकामावपि युवां नरनारायणावृषी ।
धर्ममाचरतां स्थित्यै ऋषभौ लोकसंग्रहम् ॥६०॥
पूर्ण-कामौ-अपि युवाम्
fulfilled of desires, even, you both
नर-नारायणौ-ऋषी
are Nara and Naaraayana sages
धर्मम्-आचरताम् स्थित्यै
righteousness practicing, for the maintainance,
ऋषभौ लोक-संग्रहम्
the foremost, the worlds' upkeep
You both are fulfilled of desires, and are the foremost, as the sages Nara and Naaraayana. Yet for the maintenance and upkeep of the worlds, practice righteousness, and set an example for the people.
इत्यादिष्टौ भगवता तौ कृष्णौ परमेष्ठिना ।
ओमित्यानम्य भूमानमादाय द्विजदारकान् ॥६१॥
इति-आदिष्टौ भगवता
thus instructed by The Lord
तौ कृष्णौ परमेष्ठिना
they Krishna and Arjuna, by The Supreme Ruler,
ओम्-इति-आनम्य भूमानम्-
'OM' thus, bowing, to the Supreme Person,
आदाय द्विज-दारकान्
taking the Braahmana's sons
They, Krishna and Arjuna, thus instructed by The Supreme Ruler, said, 'OM' and bowing to the Supreme Person, returned with the Braahmana's sons.
न्यवर्ततां स्वकं धाम सम्प्रहृष्टौ यथागतम् ।
विप्राय ददतु: पुत्रान् यथारूपं यथावय: ॥६२॥
न्यवर्तताम् स्वकम् धाम
returned to own place
सम्प्रहृष्टौ यथा-आगतम्
very delighted, as they had gone, came
विप्राय ददतु: पुत्रान्
to the Braahmana gave the sons
यथा-रूपम् यथा-वय:
as they looked and as was their age
They were delighted and returned to their own place, as they had gone, came back. They gave the sons to the Braahmana, as they looked and as was their age.
निशाम्य वैष्णवम् धाम पार्थ: परमविस्मित: ।
यत्किञ्चित् पौरुषं मेने कृष्णानुकम्पितम् ॥६३॥
निशाम्य वैष्णवम् धाम
seeing the Vaikuntha abode,
पार्थ: परम-विस्मित:
Arjuna was very astonished
यत्-किञ्चित् पौरुषम्
what ever valour (of men),
मेने कृष्ण-अनुकम्पितम्
understood to be by Krishna's grace
Arjuna was very much amazed on seeing the abode of Vishnu, the Vaikuntha. He understood that what ever valour a person has, is by Lord Krishna's grace.
इतीदृशान्यनेकानि वीर्याणीह प्रदर्शयन् ।
बुभुजे विषयान् ग्राम्यानीजे चात्यूर्जितैर्मखै: ॥६४॥
इति-ईदृशानि-अनेकानि
this, and such many
वीर्याणि-इह प्रदर्शयन्
valorous deeds here exhibited,
बुभुजे विषयान् ग्राम्यान्-
enjoyed the pleasures worldly,
ईजे च-अति-ऊर्जितै:-मखै:
performed and very high sacrifices
Lord Krishna, exhibited this and many such valorous deeds, and enjoyed the worldly pleasures and also performed sacrifices of the highest order.
प्रववर्षाखिलान् कामान् प्रजासु ब्राह्मणादिषु ।
यथाकालं यथैवेन्द्रो भगवाञ्छ्रैष्ठ्यमास्थित: ॥६५॥
प्रववर्ष-अखिलान् कामान्
showered all the desires,
प्रजासु ब्राह्मण-आदिषु
on the public and Braahmana's and others,
यथा-कालम् यथा-एव-इन्द्र:
according to time, just like Indra,
भगवान्-श्रैष्ठ्यम्-आस्थित:
The Lord, as the best of Rulers
He, The Lord, showered on the public, the Braahmanas and others all the desires, according to time, just as Indra, as the best of the Rulers.
हत्वा नृपानधर्मिष्टान् घातयित्वार्जुनादिभि: ।
अञ्जसा वर्तयामास धर्मं धर्मसुतादिभि: ॥६६॥
हत्वा नृपान्-अधर्मिष्टान्
killed the kings unrighteous,
घातयित्वा-अर्जुन-आदिभि:
and got them killed by Arjuna and others,
अञ्जसा वर्तयामास धर्मम्
easily established righteousness
धर्म-सुत-आदिभि:
by Dharama's son Yudhishthira and others
He killed and got killed the unrighteous kings by Arjuna and others. And easily established righteousness through Dharma's son Yudhishthira and others.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे द्विजकुमारायनयनं नाम एकोननवतितम: अध्याय: ॥८९॥
Thus ends the eighty-ninth discourse entitled 'The Lord brings back the (dead) sons of a Braahmana', in the latter half of Book Ten of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
