राजा-उवाच -
King Nimi said -
यानि यानीह कर्माणि यैर्यै: स्वच्छन्दजन्मभि: ।

चक्रे करोति कर्ता वा हरिस्तानि ब्रुवन्तु न: ॥१॥


यानि यानि-इह कर्माणि
those all, here, the deeds
यै:-यै: स्वच्छन्द-जन्मभि:
by those wilful manifestations
चक्रे करोति कर्ता वा
did, does, will do or,
हरि:-तानि ब्रुवन्तु न:
Shree Hari, of them do tell us

Through all those manifestations which Shree Hari has wilfully taken, here, in this universe, and the deeds which He has done, is doing and will do, do tell us about them.


द्रुमिल उवाच -
Drumila said -
यो वा अनन्तस्य गुणाननन्ताननुक्रमिष्यन् स तु बालबुद्धि: ।

रजांसि भूमेर्गणयेत् कथञ्चित् कालेन नैवाखिलशक्तिधाम्न: ॥२॥


य: वा अनन्तस्य गुणान्-
who, or of The Eternal Lord excellences
अनन्तान्-अनुक्रमिष्यन्
endless counts,
स: तु बाल-बुद्धि:
he indeed is immature minded
रजांसि भूमे:-गणयेत् कथञ्चित्
dust particles of earth may count somehow
कालेन न-एव-
in time, not even
अखिल-शक्ति-धाम्न:
of endless power holding abode, (The Lord)

He who counts the endless excellences of The Eternal Lord, he indeed is of immature mind. The dust particles of the earth may somehow be counted, in time, but not the qualities of the endless powers' abode, The Lord.


भूतैर्यदा पञ्चभिरात्मसृष्टै: पुरं विराजं विरचय्य तस्मिन् ।

स्वांशेन विष्ट: पुरुषाभिधानमवाप नारायण आदिदेव: ॥३॥


भूतै:-यदा पञ्चभि:-
with the elements when, five,
आत्म-सृष्टै: पुरम् विराजम्
by Himself created, the body Universe,
विरचय्य तस्मिन्
creating in that
स्व-अंशेन विष्ट:
by own part entered
पुरुष-अभिधानम्-अवाप
Purusha' name acquired
नारायण आदि-देव:
Naaraayana, The Primary Deity

When, Naaraayana, The Primary Deity, with the five elements created by Himself, created this universe as His body, and with a part of Himself entered it, He acquired the name of 'Purusha'.


यत्काय एष भुवनत्रयसन्निवेशो यस्येन्द्रियैस्तनुभृतामुभयेन्द्रियाणि ।

ज्ञानं स्वत: श्वसनतो बलमोज ईहा सत्त्वादिभि: स्थितिलयोद्भव आदिकर्ता ॥४॥


यत्-काय एष भुवन-त्रय-
in Whose body this world three
सन्निवेश: यस्य-इन्द्रियै:-
is placed, by Whose organs,
तनुभृताम्-उभय-इन्द्रियाणि
of the embodied beings, both the senses,
ज्ञानम् स्वत: श्वसनत:
Consciousness is Himself, from His breath
बलम्-ओज ईहा सत्त्व-आदिभि:
is strength, valour, and activity, by Sattva and others
स्थिति-लय-उद्भव आदि-कर्ता
sustenance, dissolution and creation, is The Primary Charter

In Whose body the three worlds are accommodated, by Whose organs both the senses of knowledge and action, of the embodied beings came into being. He Himself is Consciousness, and from His breath come strength, valour and activity. By Sattva and the other two Gunas, He is The Primary Charter of the sustenance, dissolution and creation of the universe.


आदावभूच्छतधृती रजसास्य सर्गे विष्णु: स्थितौ क्रतुपतिर्द्विजधर्मसेतु: ।

रुद्रोऽप्ययाय तमसा पुरुष: स आद्य इत्युद्भवस्थितिलया: सततं प्रजासु ॥५॥


आदौ-अभूत्-शतधृती रजसा-
in the beginning, became Brahmaa by Rajas
अस्य सर्गे विष्णु: स्थितौ क्रतु-पति:-
of its creation, Vishnu for sustenance, of Sacrifices The Lord,
द्विज-धर्म-सेतु:
for Braahmanas, righteousness continuity
रुद्र:-अपि-अयाय तमसा
Rudra also for destruction, with Tamas
पुरुष: स: आद्य: इति-
Purusha The Ancient, thus,
उद्भव-स्थिति-लया:
creation, maintenance and destruction
सततं प्रजासु
constantly in the created beings

In the beginning, The Ancient Purusha became Brahmaa and with Rajas created this universe, then He, as Vishnu, The Lord of the sacrifices, with Sattva conducted the sustenance, and the continuity of the Braahmanas and of righteousness. Then, as Rudra also with Tamas for destruction. Thus he constantly keeps the cycle of creation, maintenance and destruction of the created beings.


धर्मस्य दक्षदुहितर्यजनिष्ट मूर्त्यां नारायणो नर ऋषिप्रवर: प्रशान्त: ।

नैष्कर्म्यलक्षणमुवाच चचार कर्म योऽद्यापि चास्त ऋषिवर्यनिषेविताङ्घ्रि: ॥६॥


धर्मस्य दक्ष-दुहितरि-
of Dharma (the wife) Daksha's daughter
अजनिष्ट मूर्त्या नारायण: नर:
was born from Moorti, Naaraayana Nara ,
ऋषि-प्रवर: प्रशान्त:
the sages foremost, very tranquil
नैष्कर्म्य-लक्षणम्-उवाच
of fruitless action the properties propounded,
चचार कर्म य:-अद्य-अपि
and performed the actions Who, today even
च-आस्ते ऋषि-वर्य-निषेवित-अङ्घ्रि:
are present by sages supreme served the feet

Of Moorti, the wife of Dharma and the daughter of Daksha, were born the very tranquil foremost sages, Nara Naaraayana. They propounded the properties of the path of fruitless actions, and themselves practiced them. They are present even today, their feet being served by the sages supreme.


इन्द्रो विशङ्क्य मम धाम जिघृक्षतीति कामं न्ययुङ्क्त सगणं स बदर्युपाख्यम् ।

गत्वाप्सरोगणवसन्तसुमन्दवातै: स्त्रीप्रेक्षणेषुभिरविध्यदतन्महिज्ञ: ॥७॥


इन्द्र: विशङ्क्य
Indra suspecting
मम धाम जिघृक्षति-इति
'My abode will usurp' thus,
कामम् न्ययुङ्क्त सगणम्
the god of love appointed with attendents
स: बदरी-उपाख्यम्
he, to Badri named,
गत्वा-अप्सर:-गण-
went with the celestial nymphs
वसन्त-सुमन्द-वातै:
spring like soft breeze
स्त्री-प्रेक्षण-इषुभि:-
by women's' side long glances' bows
अविध्यत्-अतन्-महिज्ञ:
pierced, Cupid powers not knowing

Indra suspecting, 'He will usurp my abode,' thus, appointed the god of love, to disturb him. He went to the place named Badri, with his retinue, the celestial nymphs and the spring's soft breezes. By the bows of the amorous side glances of the women, he pierced him, not knowing his glory.


विज्ञाय शक्रकृतमक्रममादिदेव: प्राह प्रहस्य गतविस्मय एजमानान् ।

मा भैष्ट भो मदन मारुत देववध्वो गृह्णीत नो बलिमशून्यमिमं कुरुध्वम् ॥८॥


विज्ञाय शक्र-कृतम्-अक्रमम्-
aware of Indra's doing this misdeed,
आदि-देव: प्राह प्रहस्य
The Ancient Deity said laughingly
गत-विस्मय एजमानान्
unperturbed, to the trembling
मा भैष्ट भो मदन
'Do not be afraid, O Cupid!
मारुत देव-वध्व:
Breeze! Celestial nymphs!
गृह्णीत न: बलिम्-
accept our hospitality
अशून्यम्-इमम् कुरुध्वम्
not vacant this do

The Ancient Deity, aware of the misdeed of Indra, was unperturbed, and laughingly said to the trembling guests, 'Do not be afraid, O Cupid! Breeze! Celestial nymphs! accept our hospitality, do not render this place vacant.'


इत्थं ब्रुवत्यभयदे नरदेव देवा: सव्रीडनम्रशिरस: सघृणं तमूचु: ।

नैतद् विभो त्वयि परेऽविकृते विचित्रं स्वारामधीरनिकरानतपादपद्मे ॥९॥


इत्थम् ब्रुवति-अभयदे
so saying, giving fearlessness,
नर-देव देवा:
The Nara Naaraayana Lords
सव्रीड-नम्र-शिरस:
to with shame hung heads
सघृणम् तम्-ऊचु:
to the merciful Them, (they) said,
न-एतद् विभो त्वयि
'Not this, O Glorious Ones! Your
परे-अविकृते विचित्रम्
beyond change, strange
स्वाराम-धीर-निकर-
in self-revelling, steadfast sages' hosts
आनत-पाद-पद्मे
bow to the feet lotus

When they, The Lords Nara-Naaraayana, said to them thus, and gave them fearlessness, their heads were hung in shame. They said to Them, The Merciful Lords, 'O Glorious Ones it is not strange that You Who are beyond change (Maayaa) are unaffected by this act of ours, because hosts of steadfast sages, who revel in their self, bow at Your lotus feet.


त्वां सेवताम् सुरकृता बहवोऽन्तराया: स्वौको विलङ्घ्य परमं व्रजतां पदं ते ।

नान्यस्य बर्हिषि बलीन् ददत: स्वभागान् धत्ते पदं त्वमविता यदि विघ्नमूर्ध्नि ॥१०॥


त्वाम् सेवताम् सुरकृता:
You serving, the gods
बहव:-अन्तराया:
many, place obstacles
स्वौक: विलङ्घ्य
the heavens crossing,
परमम् व्रजताम् पदम् ते
The Supreme reaching Abode Yours'
न-अन्यस्य बर्हिषि
not in the others', who by sacrifice
बलीन् ददत: स्व-भागान्
oblations give their own shares,
धत्ते पदम्
place feet (the devotees)
त्वम्-अविता यदि विघ्न-मूर्ध्नि
You are Protector, if, on the obstacles' heads

When the devotees are serving You, and have crossed the heavens to reach Your abode, the gods place many obstacles on their path, but not in the path of those who give them their share through sacrifices. But, if You are The Protector, the devotees step on the heads of the obstacles.


क्षुत्तृट्त्रिकालगुणमारुतजैह्व्यशैश्न्यानस्मानपारजलधीनतितीर्य केचित् ।

क्रोधस्य यान्ति विफलस्य वशं पदे गोर्मज्जन्ति दुश्चरतपश्च वृथोत्सृजन्ति ॥११॥


क्षुत्-तृट्-त्रि-काल-गुण-
hunger thirst, of the three Time's properties,
मारुत-जैह्व्य-शैश्न्यान्-अस्मान्-
the air, palate, sexual urge, us
अपार-जलधीन्-अतितीर्य केचित्
the endless ocean, having crossed, some,
क्रोधस्य यान्ति विफलस्य
of anger become fruitless
वशम् पदे गो:-मज्जन्ति
victims, in the hoofs marks of the cows fall
दुश्चर-तप:-च वृथा-उत्सृजन्ति
difficult austerities, and needlessly give up

Some people, who have overcome our vast ocean of hunger, thirst, the three properties of time, hot and cold weather, rains, the breath, palate, sexual urge, become the victims of fruitless anger, and drown in the cow's foot print's hollow and needlessly give up the difficult austerities practiced by them.


इति प्रगृणतां तेषां स्त्रियोऽत्यद्भुतदर्शना: ।

दर्शयामास शुश्रूषां स्वर्चिता: कुर्वतीर्विभु: ॥१२॥


इति प्रगृणताम् तेषाम्
thus, as prayed, they,
स्त्रिय:-अति-अद्भुत-दर्शना:
women, very wonderful to look at
दर्शयामास शुश्रूषाम्
displayed, in service
स्वर्चिता: कुर्वती:-विभु:
well adorned, giving, The Almighty

As they prayed to Him thus, The Almighty displayed to them well adorned women of wonderful looks, giving service to Him.


ते देवानुचरा दृष्ट्वा स्त्रिय: श्रीरिव रूपिणी: ।

गन्धेन मुमुहुस्तासां रूपौदार्यहतश्रिय: ॥१३॥


ते देव-अनुचरा: दृष्ट्वा
they, of the god the attendents, seeing
स्त्रिय: श्री:-इव रूपिणी:
women Laxmi like beautiful,
गन्धेन मुमुहु:-तासाम्
by the fragrance enchanted, their,
रूप-औदार्य-हत-श्रिय:
by beauty surpassing, fainted looks

They, the attendents of the god Indra, seeing them, beautiful like Goddess Laxmi, were enchanted by their fragrance, and found their own looks faint in comparison to their unsurpassing beauty.


तानाह देवदेवेश: प्रणतान् प्रहसन्निव ।

आसामेकतमां वृङ्ध्वं सवर्णां स्वर्गभूषणाम् ॥१४॥


तान्-आह देव-देवेश:
to them said, The Lord of the lords,
प्रणतान् प्रहसन्-इव
to the bowing, laughingly,
आसाम्-एकतमाम् वृङ्ध्वम्
among them, one choose
सवर्णाम् स्वर्ग-भूषणाम्
like them, of the heavens a jewel

To the bowing and humbled Kaama deva and his retinue, The Lord of lords, Naaraayana, laughingly said, 'Choose one among these, like yourself, she will be a jewel of the heavens.'


ओमित्यादेशमादाय नत्वा तं सुरवन्दिन: ।

उर्वशीमप्सर:श्रेष्ठां पुरस्कृत्य दिवं ययु: ॥१५॥


ओम्-इति-आदेशम्-आदाय
'Amen' thus the command undertaking,
नत्वा तम् सुर-वन्दिन:
bowing to Him, of Indra's the attendents
उर्वशीम्-अप्सर:श्रेष्ठाम्
Urvashi, of the celestial nymphs the best
पुरस्कृत्य दिवम् ययु:
following to the heaven went

'Amen' thus accepting the command, the attendents of Indra bowed to Him, chose the best of the celestial nymphs, Urvashi, and following her went to the heavens.


इन्द्रायानम्य सदसि शृण्वतां त्रिदिवौकसाम् ।

ऊचुर्नारायणबलं शक्रस्तत्रास विस्मित: ॥१६॥


इन्द्राय-आनम्य सदसि
for Indra bowing in the court,
शृण्वताम् त्रि-दिव-औकसाम्
in hearing of three worlds' heavenly beings
ऊचु:-नारायण-बलम्
said about Naaraayana's power
शक्र:-तत्र-आस विस्मित:
Indra by that remained astonished

In the court of the gods, they bowed to Indra and in the hearing of the heavenly beings of the three worlds, described the power of Naaraayana, by which Indra remained astonished.


हंसस्वरूप्यवददच्युत आत्मयोगं दत्त: कुमार ऋषभो भगवान् पिता न: ।

विष्णु: शिवाय जगतां कलयावतीर्णस्तेनाहृता मधुभिदा श्रुतयो हयास्ये ॥१७॥


हंस-स्वरूपी-अवदत्-अच्युत:
Swan form in, taught The Immortal
आत्म-योग दत्त: कुमार
the Self knowledge, Dattatreya, Sanatkumaaras,
ऋषभ: भगवान् पिता न:
Rishabha, The Lord, our father,
विष्णु: शिवाय जगताम्
Vishnu for the good of the worlds,
कलया-अवतीर्ण:-तेन-आहृता:
in parts descending, by them recovered
मधुभिदा श्रुतय: हय-आस्ये
from Madhu killing, the Vedas in horses' face

The Immortal Lord Vishnu, in the form of a Swan, Dattatreya, Sanatkumaaras, our father, Rishabha, taught the knowledge of the Self, for the good of the worlds, and in the form of Hayagreeva, with a horse’s face, He recovered the Vedas from the demon Madhu by killing him.


गुप्तोऽप्यये मनुरिलौषधयश्च मात्स्ये क्रौडे हतो दितिज उद्धरताम्भस: क्ष्माम् ।

कौर्मे धृतोऽद्रिरमृतोन्मथने स्वपृष्ठे ग्राहात् प्रपन्नमिभराजममुञ्चदार्तम् ॥१८॥


गुप्त:-अप्यये मनु:-इला-
rescued, at deluge, Manu, the earth,
औषधय:-च मात्स्ये क्रौडे हत:
and the plants, in The Fish, in the Boar, killed
दितिज उद्धरत-अम्भस: क्ष्माम्
the demon, lifting from the waters the earth
कौर्मे धृत:-अद्रि:-अमृत-उन्मथने
in the Tortoise, upheld the mountain, at nectar churning,
स्व-पृष्ठे ग्राहात् प्रपन्नम्-
on own back, from the alligator the resort seeking
इभ-राजम्-अमुञ्चत्-आर्तम्
elephant king, rescued distressed

At the time of deluge, in His descent as The Fish, He rescued the future Manu, Satyavrata, the earth and the plants. In His descent as The Boar, He lifted the earth from the waters and killed the demon Hiranyaaksha. In His descent as The Tortoise, He upheld the Mount Mandara, on His back when nectar was churned out from the ocean. And He, Vishnu, rescued the distressed, resort seeking king of the elephants from the alligator.


संस्तुवन्तोऽब्धिपतिताञ्छ्रमणानृषींश्च शक्रं च वृत्रवधतस्तमसि प्रविष्टम् ।

देवस्त्रियोऽसुरगृहे पिहिता अनाथा जघ्नेऽसुरेन्द्रमभयाय सतां नृसिंहे ॥१९॥


संस्तुवन्त:-अब्धि-पतितान्-
the praising, in ocean fallen,
श्रमणान्-ऋषीन्-च शक्रम् च
emancipated sages and, Indra and
वृत्र-वध:-तमसि प्रविष्टम्
by Vritra's killing, in darkness (of Braahminicide) entered
देव-स्त्रिय:-असुर-गृहे पिहिता:
the celestial women in the demon's house imprisoned,
अनाथा: जघ्ने-असुरेन्द्रम्-
helpless, killed the demon king
अभयाय सताम् नृसिंहे
for the fearlessness of the noble, in Nrisimha descent

The Lord rescued the sages (Baalakhilyaas) who were praising Him, but had fallen in a pit, as though in an ocean, being emaciated by austerities. He saved Indra who had fallen in the darkness of the sin of killing a Braahmana, by killing Vritraasura. He rescued the celestial women who were helpless and were imprisoned in the house of the demon, by killing him. To bring fearlessness to the noble people, He killed the demon king Hiranyakashipu, in His Nrisimha descent.


देवासुरे युधि च दैत्यपतीन् सुरार्थे हत्वान्तरेषु भुवनान्यदधात् कलाभि: ।

भूत्वाथ वामन इमामहरद् बले: क्ष्मां याच्ञाच्छलेन समदाददिते: सुतेभ्य: ॥२०॥


देव-असुरे युधि च दैत्य-पतीन्
in the gods' and demons battle and the demons' chiefs,
सुर-अर्थे हत्वा-अन्तरेषु
for the gods' sake, killed, in the Manvantaras
भुवनानि-अदधात् कलाभि:
the worlds protected by part incarnations,
भूत्वा-अथ वामन इमाम्-अहरद्
becoming then Vaamana, this took away
बले: क्ष्माम् याच्ञा-छलेन
from Bali the earth, by alms pretext
समदात्-अदिते: सुतेभ्य:
gave to Aditi's sons

In the war between the gods and the demons, He killed the chiefs of the demons for the sake of the gods and protected the worlds through the different Manvantaras by different incarnations. Then, becoming Vaamana, He took away this earth, in the pretext of alms, from Bali and gave it to the sons of Aditi, the gods.


नि:क्षत्रियामकृत गां च त्रि:सप्तकृत्वो रामस्तु हैहयकुलाप्ययभार्गवाग्नि: ।

सोऽब्धिं बबन्ध दशवक्त्रमहन् सलङ्कं सीतापतिर्जयति लोकमलघ्नकीर्ति: ॥२१॥


नि:क्षत्रियाम्-अकृत गाम् च
devoid of Kshatriyas rendered the earth and
त्रि:-सप्त-कृत्व: राम:-तु
thrice seven (twenty one) times, Parashuraama, indeed,
हैहय-कुल-अप्यय-भार्गव-अग्नि:
Haihaya race to destruct, of the Bhaargava', fire like
स:-अब्धिम् बबन्ध दश-वक्त्रम्-अहन्
He, the ocean Enbridge, ten headed Raavana killed
स-लङ्कम् सीता-पति:-जयति
with Lankaa, Sita's spouse Rama is victorious
लोक-मल-घ्न-कीर्ति:
the worlds' sins destroyer, famed

As Parashuraama, He rendered the earth devoid of the Kshatriyas twenty one times, He was like the fire of the Bhrigus, to destruct the race of the Haihayas. Then He, as Raama the victorious, the spouse of Sita, Enbridge the ocean and killed the ten headed Raavana, and destroyed his Lankaa, may His fame destroy the sins of the worlds.


भूमेर्भरावतरणाय यदुष्वजन्मा जात: करिष्यति सुरैरपि दुष्कराणि ।

वादैर्विमोहयति यज्ञकृतोऽतदर्हान् शूद्रान् कलौ क्षितिभुजो न्यहनिष्यदन्ते ॥२२॥


भूमे:-भर-अवतरणाय
earth's burden, to remove,
यदुषु-अजन्मा जात:
in the Yadus, The Unborn will be born
करिष्यति सुरै:-अपि दुष्कराणि
will act like by gods' also incapable of
वादै:-विमोहयति यज्ञ-कृत-
by arguments will confuse the sacrifice performing
अतदर्हान् शूद्रान् कलौ
unqualified Shudras, in Kali age,
क्षितिभुज: न्यहनिष्यत्-अन्ते
the kings will kill in the end

To remove the burden of the earth, The Unborn will be born in the race of the Yadus, and will perform deeds which even the gods are incapable to perform. Then, as Buddha, He, by His arguments, will confuse the unqualified Shudras performing sacrifices, into not doing so. In the age of Kali appearing as Kalki, He will destroy the Shudra kings.


एवं विधानि कर्माणि जन्मानि च जगत्पते: ।

भूरीणि भूरियशसो वर्णितानि महाभुज ॥२३॥


एवम् विधानि कर्माणि
such types of deeds
जन्मानि च जगत्पते:
descents and of The Universe's Lord
भूरीणि भूरि-यशस:
glorious of the glorious famed Lord
वर्णितानि महाभुज
are described, O Mighty armed One!

O Mighty armed One! Many of such glorious deeds and descents of The Glorious famed Lord, have been described.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां एकादशस्कन्धे: चतुर्थोऽध्याय: ॥४॥


Thus ends the fourth discourse in Book Eleven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
