राजा-उवाच -
The King (Nimi) said -
भगवन्तं हरिं प्रायो न भजन्त्यात्मवित्तमा: ।

तेषामशान्तकामानां का निष्ठाऽविजितात्मनाम् ॥१॥


भगवन्तम् हरिम् प्राय:
The Lord Shree Hari, generally
न भजन्ति-आत्मवित्तमा:
do not worship, O Self-realized sages!
तेषाम्-अशान्त-कामानाम् का
their, of insatiate desires,
निष्ठा-अविजित-आत्मनाम्
what state is of the uncontrolled Selves

O Self-realized sages! What is the state of those who generally do not worship Lord Shree Hari, whose desires are insatiate and whose minds and selves are uncontrolled?


चमस उवाच -
Chamasa said -
मुखबाहूरुपादेभ्य: पुरुषस्याश्रमै: सह ।

चत्वारो जज्ञिरे गुणैर्विप्रादय: पृथक् ॥२॥


मुख-बाहू:-उरु-पादेभ्य:
from mouth, arms, thighs, and feet,
पुरुषस्य-आश्रमै: सह
of The Supreme Purusha, Aashramas with,
चत्वार: जज्ञिरे गुणै:-
four created, by the Gunas
विप्र-आदय: पृथक्
Braahmanas and others separately

From the mouth, arms, thighs and feet of The Supreme Purusha, and with the Aashramas, the stages of life, and according to the proportion of the three Gunas, were distinctly created the four castes of Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras.


य एषां पुरुषं साक्षादात्मप्रभवमीश्वरम् ।

न भजन्त्यवजानन्ति स्थानाद् भ्रष्टा: पतन्त्यध: ॥३॥


य: एषाम् पुरुषम् साक्षात्-
who, This Purusha, directly
आत्म-प्रभवम्-ईश्वरम्
of self the Progenitor, The Lord,
न भजन्ति-अवजानन्ति
does not worship, ignores,
स्थानाद् भ्रष्टा: पतन्ति-अध:
from position is displaced, falls downwards

Any one of these, who directly knowing This Purusha to be of his own self, The Progenitor and The Ruler, does not worship or ignores Him, is displaced from his status and falls down into hell.


दूरेहरिकथा: केचिद् दूरेचाच्युतकीर्तना: ।

स्त्रिय: शूद्रादयश्चैव तेऽनुकम्प्या भवादृशाम् ॥४॥


दूरे-हरि-कथा: केचिद्
far from Shree Hari's stories, some,
दूरे-च-अच्युत-कीर्तना:
far and from The Immortal's names singing,
स्त्रिय: शूद्र-आदय:-च-एव
women and Shudras, others and also
ते-अनुकम्प्या भवान्-दृशाम्
they mercy deserve of the You like

Those women Shudras and others who are far from hearing the stories of Shree Hari, and from singing the names of The Immortal Lord, deserve mercy from people like You.


विप्रो राजन्यवैश्यौ च हरे: प्राप्ता: पदान्तिकम् ।

श्रौतेन जन्मनाथापि मुह्यन्त्याम्नायवादिन: ॥५॥


विप्र:-राजन्य-वैश्यौ च
Braahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and
हरे: प्राप्ता: पद-अन्तिकम्
of Shree Hari reach the feet near to
श्रौतेन जन्मना-अथ-अपि
by rituals, by birth, then also
मुह्यन्ति-आम्नाय-वादिन:
are confused by the Vedas declarations

The Braahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, reach near to the feet of Shree Hari, by the practice of rituals and also by birth, but get confused by the misinterpretation of the declarations of the Vedas.


कर्मण्यकोविदा: स्तब्धा मूर्खा: पण्डितमानिन: ।

वदन्ति चाटुकान् मूढा यया माध्व्या गिरोत्सुका: ॥६॥


कर्मणि-अकोविदा: स्तब्धा:
in actions, the secret not knowing, stupefied,
मूर्खा: पण्डित-मानिन:
dumb, learned considering
वदन्ति चाटुकान् मूढा:
speak sweet talks, the foolish,
यया माध्व्या: गिर-उत्सुका:
by honeyed words enchanted

They, the dumb, stupefied, and not knowing the secret import of the actions, consider themselves to be learned, and indulge in sweet talks, enchanted by the honeyed words.


रजसा घोरसङ्कल्पा कामुका अहिमन्यव: ।

दाम्भिका मानिन: पापा विहसन्त्यच्युतप्रियान् ॥७॥


रजसा घोर-सङ्कल्पा:
by Rajas, terrific deeds deciding to do,
कामुका अहि-मन्यव:
yearning for sense pleasures, snake like temper
दाम्भिका: मानिन: पापा:
hypocrites arrogant sinful
विहसन्ति-अच्युत-प्रियान्
sneer at The Immortal Lords' devotees

Instigated by the dominance of Rajas, they decide to do terrible deeds, yearn for sense pleasures, have a temper like that of the snake, are hypocrites, arrogant, sinful, and sneer at the devotees of The Immortal Lord.


वदन्ति तेऽन्योऽन्यमुपासितस्त्रियो गृहेषु मैथुन्यपरेषु चाशिष: ।

यजन्त्यसृष्टान्नविधानदक्षिणं वृत्त्यै परं घ्नन्ति पशूनतद्विद: ॥८॥


वदन्ति ते-अन्य:-अन्यम्-
speak, they to each other
उपासित-स्त्रिय: गृहेषु
adoring the women in the houses,
मैथुन्य-परेषु च-आशिष:
sexual pleasure given to, and desires to fulfil
यजन्ति-असृष्ट-अन्न
sacrifice, without giving food,
विधान-दक्षिणम् वृत्त्यै
the system, fees, for satisfaction
परम् घ्नन्ति पशून्-
only kill the animals
अ-तत्-विद:
not that (sin) knowing

They are given to sex pleasure, and adore the women in the house, and speak to each other of those pleasures. To fulfil their desires they perform sacrifices, without giving food or fees to the Braahmanas, and just for self satisfaction they kill the animals, not knowing of the sins in doing that.


श्रिया विभूत्याभिजनेन विद्यया त्यागेन रूपेण बलेन कर्मणा ।

जातस्मयेनान्धधिय: सहेश्वरान् सतोऽवमन्यन्ति हरिप्रियान् खला: ॥९॥


श्रिया विभूत्या-अभिजनेन
with wealth, power, birth,
विद्यया त्यागेन
learning, charity,
रूपेण बलेन कर्मणा
good looks, strength, actions
जात-स्मयेन-अन्ध-धिय:
generated arrogance, blinded in mind,
सह-ईश्वरान् सत:-अवमन्यन्ति
with The Lord, the saints disregard
हरि-प्रियान् खला:
of Shree Hari's beloveds, the rogues

The rogues, with the arrogance generated by their wealth, power, birth, learning, charity, good looks, strength, actions are blinded in the mind, and disregard The Lord along with Shree Haris beloved devotees, the saints.


सर्वेषु शश्वत्तनुभृत्स्ववस्थितं यथा खमात्मानमभीष्टमीश्वरम् ।

वेदोपगीतं च न शृण्वतेऽबुधा मनोरथानां प्रवदन्ति वार्तया ॥१०॥


सर्वेषु शश्वत्-तनु-भृत्सु-
in all, eternally, the embodied beings
अवस्थितम् यथा खम्-
is present, like the sky
आत्मानम्-अभीष्टम्-ईश्वरम्
the Self, worthy of pursuit, The Almighty Lord,
वेद-उपगीतम् च न शृण्वते-
by the Vedas declared and do not heed,
अबुधा: मनोरथानाम्
the fools, of desires
प्रवदन्ति वार्तया
speak in conversations

The Almighty Lord, the very self, worthy of pursuit, is present in all the embodied beings, like the sky, this declaration of the Vedas, the fools do not heed. They only speak of their own desires in conversations.


लोके व्यवायामिषमद्यसेवा नित्यास्तु जन्तोर्न हि तत्र चोदना ।

व्यवस्थितिस्तेषु विवाहयज्ञसुराग्रहैरासु निवृत्तिरिष्टा ॥११॥


लोके व्यवाय-आमिष-
people in sexual pleasure, meat eating,
मद्य-सेवा नित्य-अस्तु
liquor drinking, is naturally inclined,
जन्तो:-न हि तत्र चोदना
of the beings not indeed there is a rule
व्यवस्थिति:-तेषु
a rule in those,
विवाह-यज्ञ-सुराग्रहै:-
in marriage, sacrifice, Sautramani sacrifice,
आसु निवृत्ति:-इष्टा
of these, abstinence is desired

There is no rule needed for the people to indulge in sexual pleasure, meat eating or in drinking liquor, as they are naturally inclined towards these. A certain rule is expected to be followed by the institutions of marriage, sacrifice and Sautramani sacrifice, but actually abstinence is desired through these.


धनं च धर्मैकफलं यतो वै ज्ञानं सविज्ञानमनुप्रशान्ति ।

गृहेषु युञ्जन्ति कलेवरस्य मृत्युं न पश्यन्ति दुरन्तवीर्यम् ॥१२॥


धनम् च धर्म-एक-फलम्
wealth and of Dharma is the only fruit (use)
यत: वै ज्ञानम्
from which indeed is knowledge,
सविज्ञानम्-अनु-प्रशान्ति
with direct realization, then supreme peace
गृहेषु युञ्जन्ति
in household use (it)
कलेवरस्य मृत्युम्
of the body the death
न पश्यन्ति दुरन्त-वीर्यम्
do not see, the unavoidable

The only use of wealth is for Dharma, piety, which leads to knowledge and then to Supreme realizations. But they use it for household purposes and forget the unavoidable death of their bodies.


यद् ध्राणभक्षो विहित: सुरायास्तथा पशोरालभनं न हिंसा ।

एवं व्यवाय: प्रजया न रत्या इमं विशुद्धं न विदु: स्वधर्मम् ॥१३॥


यद् ध्राण-भक्ष: विहित:
that, to smell, for drinking is not allowed
सुराया:-तथा
of the liquor, and
पशो:-आलभनम् न हिंसा
of the animal touch not killing,
एवं व्यवाय: प्रजया
also, having sex for progeny
न रत्या इमम् विशुद्धम्
not for enjoyment, this pure
न विदु: स्व-धर्मम्
do not know own Dharma

That, to smell, and not to drink the liquor is directed, and to touch the animal and not to kill it, and also, sex is allowed with the wife for progeny, not for pleasure, this pure essence of their own Dharma, religion, they do not understand.


ये त्वनेवंविदोऽसन्त: स्तब्धा: सदभिमानिन: ।

पशून् द्रुह्यन्ति विस्रब्धा: प्रेत्य खादन्ति ते च तान् ॥१४॥


ये तु-अनेवम्-अविद:-असन्त:
who, indeed, this pure, do not know, are ignorant,
स्तब्धा: सत्-अभिमानिन:
unaware, saints proclaiming,
पशून् द्रुह्यन्ति विस्रब्धा:
animals kill, cheated,
प्रेत्य खादन्ति ते च तान्
after death, eat they, (the animals) them

Those who proclaiming themselves to be saints, do not know this pure conduct, are ignorant and unaware, that cheated by themselves, after death, they, the animals, will eat them.


द्विषन्त: परकायेषु स्वात्मानं हरिमीश्वरम् ।

मृतके सानुबन्धेऽस्मिन् बद्धस्नेहा: पतन्त्यध: ॥१५॥


द्विषन्त: पर-कायेषु
being hostile towards other bodies,
स्व-आत्मानम् हरिम्-ईश्वरम्
own Self, Shree Hari The Almighty,
मृतके सानुबन्धे-अस्मिन्
to the mortal relations this,
बद्ध-स्नेहा: पतन्ति-अध:
with ties of affection, fall hell wards

Being hostile to other people and so being hostile towards The Almighty Lord Shree Hari, his own indwelling Self, tied with affection, along with the other relations to this mortal body, falls in hell.


ये कैवल्यमसम्प्राप्ता ये चातीताश्च मूढताम् ।

त्रैवर्गिका ह्यक्षणिका आत्मानं घातयन्ति ते ॥१६॥


ये कैवल्यम्-असम्प्राप्ता
those who liberation have not achieved,
ये च-अतीता:-च मूढताम्
who and have passed ignorance,
त्रैवर्गिका हि-अक्षणिका
the threefold, indeed the short lived,
आत्मानम् घातयन्ति ते
themselves kill they

Those who have not achieved liberation, but have crossed the state of ignorance, they get involved in the three fold objects of existence, Dharma, Artha, and Kaama, and do not pursue Moksha, they kill themselves, indeed.


एत आत्महनोऽशान्ता अज्ञाने ज्ञानमानिन: ।

सीदन्त्त्यकृतकृत्या वै कालध्वस्तमनोरथा: ॥१७॥


एते आत्म-हन:-अशान्ता:
these, Self destroyers, unpeaceful,
अज्ञाने ज्ञान-मानिन:
in ignorance wisdom asserting,
सीदन्ति-अकृत-कृत्या: वै
suffer for having not accomplished, indeed,
काल-ध्वस्त मनोरथा:
by Time shattered desired aims

Such people are destroyers of their own self, are unpeaceful and assert ignorance to be knowledge. They suffer for not having accomplished, and are frustrated by their desired aims shattered by Time.


हित्वात्यायासरचिता गृहापत्यसुहृच्छ्रिय: ।

तमो विशन्त्यनिच्छन्तो वासुदेवपराङ्मुखा: ॥१८॥


हित्वा-अति-आयास-रचिता
giving up, with great effort procured
गृह-अपत्य-सुहृद्-श्रिय:
house, children, friends and wealth
तम: विशन्ति-अनिच्छन्त:
in darkness fall, unwillingly
वासुदेव-पराङ्-मुखा:
to Vaasudeva averse

Those who are averse to Vaasudeva, have to unwillingly give up their house, children, friends and wealth, which they acquired after great effort, and fall into dark hell.


राजा-उवाच-
The King (Nimi) said -
कस्मिन् काले स भगवान् किं वर्ण: कीदृशो नृभि: ।

नाम्ना वा केन विधिना पूज्यते तदिहोच्यताम् ॥१९॥


कस्मिन् काले स: भगवान्
in which ages, He, The Lord,
किम् वर्ण: कीदृश: नृभि:
in which colour, what form, by men
नाम्ना वा केन विधिना
by name or which by rites
पूज्यते तत्-इह-उच्यताम्
is worshipped, that now do say

Now, do say, in which ages, in what form and colour, and by which names and rites is The Lord to be worshipped by men.


करभाजन उवाच -
Karabhaajana said -
कृतं त्रेता द्वापरं च कलिरित्येषु केशव: ।

नानावर्णाभिधाकारो नानैव विधिनेज्यते ॥२०॥


कृतम् त्रेता द्वापरम् च
in Satyuga, Tretaa, Dwaapara and
कलि:-इति-एषु केशव:
Kali, this in these, Keshava
नाना-वर्ण-अभिधा-आकार:
in various colours, names and forms,
नाना-एव विधिना-इज्यते
various and rituals is worshipped

In Satyuga, Tretaa, Dwaapara and Kali, in these, Keshava, The Lord is worshipped in various colours, names and forms, and by various rituals.


कृते शुक्लश्चतुर्बाहुर्जटिलो बल्कलाम्बर: ।

कृष्णाजिनोपबीताक्षान् विभ्रद् दण्डकमण्डलू ॥२१॥


कृते शुक्ल:-चतु:-बाहु:-
in Kritayuga, fair, four armed,
जटिल: बल्कल-अम्बर:
matted locks, bark clad,
कृष्ण-अजिन-उपबीत-अक्षान्
dark deer skin, sacred thread, Rudraaksha,
विभ्रद् दण्ड-कमण्डलू
flaunting staff and Kamandalu

In Kritayuga, i.e., in Satyayuga, The Lord is fair complexioned, four armed, has matted locks, is clad in bark and dark deer skin, has the sacred thread and Rudraaksha, and flaunts a staff and Kamandalu.


मनुष्यास्तु तदा शान्ता निर्वैरा: सुहृद: समा: ।

यजन्ति तपसा देवं शमेन च दमेन च ॥२२॥


मनुष्या:-तु तदा शान्ता:
the people also then are peaceful,
निर्वैरा: सुहृद: समा:
are without enemies, friendly, and equal minded,
यजन्ति तपसा देवम्
worship by austerities The Lord
शमेन च दमेन च
by control of mind and senses

Then, in Satyayuga, even the people are peaceful, have no enemies, are friendly and equal minded. They worship The Lord with austerities and by control of mind and senses.


हंस: सुपर्णो वैकुण्ठो धर्मो योगेश्वरोऽमल: ।

ईश्वर: पुरुषोऽव्यक्त: परमात्मेति गीयते ॥२३॥


हंस: सुपर्ण: वैकुण्ठ:
Hansa, Suparna, Vaikuntha,
धर्म: योगेश्वर:-अमल:
Dharma, Yogeshvara, Amala,
ईश्वर: पुरुष:-अव्यक्त:
Ishvara, Purusha, Avyakta,
परमात्मा-इति गीयते
Parmaatma, thus is called

In the Satyuga, The Lord is called by the names such as, Hansa, Suparna, Vaikuntha, Dharma, Yogeshvara, Amala, Ishvara, Purusha, Avyakta and Paramaatma.


त्रेतायां रक्तवर्णोऽसौ चतुर्बाहुस्त्रिमेखल: ।

हिरण्यकेशस्त्रय्यात्मा स्रुक्स्रुवाद्युपलक्षण: ॥२४॥


त्रेतायाम् रक्त-वर्ण:-असौ
in Tretaa yuga, crimson coloured, He,
चतु:-बाहु:-त्रि-मेखल:
four armed, three cords wearing,
हिरण्य-केश:-त्रयी-आत्मा
golden hair, three (Vedas) soul
स्रुक्-स्रुव-आदि-उपलक्षण:
Sruka and Sruva, and other wielding

In the Tretaa yuga, He appears as The Lord of sacrifice, in crimson colour, having four arms and golden hair, wearing three cords, as lion cloth, the three Vedas as His soul, wielding Sruka and Sruva the ladles used in sacrifice and other assecories.


तं तदा मनुजा देवं सर्वदेवमयं हरिम् ।

यजन्ति विद्यया त्रय्या धर्मिष्ठा ब्रह्मवादिन: ॥२५॥


तम् तदा मनुजा: देवम्
Him, at that time, the people The Lord,
सर्व-देव-मयम् हरिम्
of all gods embodiment, Shree Hari
यजन्ति विद्यया त्रय्या
worship by the knowledge of three (Vedas)
धर्मिष्ठा: ब्रह्म-वादिन:
pious, Vedas' teachers

At that time, the people worship The Lord, the embodiment of all gods, Shree Hari, by the pious teachers of the three Vedas.


विष्णुर्यज्ञ: पृश्निगर्भ: सर्वदेव उरुक्रम: ।

वृषाकपिर्जयन्तश्च उरुगाय इतीर्यते ॥२६॥


विष्णु:-यज्ञ: पृश्निगर्भ:
Vishnu, Yagya, Prishnigarbha,
सर्वदेव: उरुक्रम:
Sarvadeva, Urukrama,
वृषाकपि:-जयन्त:-च
Vrishaakapi, Jayanta and
उरुगाय इति-ईर्यते
Urugaaya thus is called

In Tretaa, The Lord is called as Vishnu, Yagya, Prishnigarbha, Sarvadeva, Urukrama, Vrishaakapi, Jayanta and Urugaaya.


द्वापरे भगवाञ्छ्याम: पीतवासा निजायुध: ।

श्रीवत्सादिभिरङ्कैश्च लक्षणैरुपलक्षित: ॥२७॥


द्वापरे भगवान्-श्याम:
in Dwaapara, The Lord, dark brown
पीत-वासा निज-आयुध:
in yellow clothed, own weapons wields,
श्रीवत्स-आदिभि:-अङ्कै:-च
with ShreeVats and others Kaustubha and
लक्षणै:-उपलक्षित:
marks marked

In the Dwaapara yuga, The Lord is of dark brown colour, wears yellow silk, wields His own weapons Gadaa, Chakra, and emblems lotus and conch, and on His bosoms has the marks of ShreeVats, and Kaustubha etc.


तं तदा पुरुषं मर्त्या महाराजोपलक्षणम् ।

यजन्ति वेदतन्त्राभ्यां परं जिज्ञासवो नृप ॥२८॥


तम् तदा पुरुषम् मर्त्या:
Him, then, The Purush, the mortal men
महाराज-उपलक्षणम्
monarch characterizing
यजन्ति वेद-तन्त्राभ्याम्
worship with Veda and Tantric methods
परम् जिज्ञासव: नृप
very inquisitive, O King!

O King! In that age, the very inquisitive mortal men worship The Purush, characterizing a monarch, by the methods of the Vedas and Taantra.


नम: वासुदेवाय नम: सङ्कर्षणाय च ।

प्रद्युम्नायानिरुद्धाय तुभ्यं भगवते नम: ॥२९॥


नम: वासुदेवाय
Salutations to Vasudeva,
नम: सङ्कर्षणाय च
salutations to Sankarshana, and
प्रद्युम्नाय-अनिरुद्धाय
to Pradyumna, Aniruddha
तुभ्यम् भगवते नम:
You two Lords salutations

Salutations to Vasudeva, salutations to Sankarshana, and salutations to You two Lords, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.


नारायणाय ऋषये पुरुषाय महात्मने ।

विश्वेश्वराय विश्वाय सर्वभूतात्मने नम: ॥३०॥


नारायणाय ऋषये
to Naaraayana the sage,
पुरुषाय महात्मने
The Purush Supreme Self,
विश्व-ईश्वराय विश्वाय
of the universe The Ruler, universe embodied,
सर्व-भूत-आत्मने नम:
of all the beings the Self, salutations

Salutations to Naaraayana the sage, The Purush Supreme Self, The Ruler of the universe, universe embodied, and to The Self of all the living beings.


इति द्वापर उर्वीश स्तुवन्ति जगदीश्वरम् ।

नानातन्त्रविधानेन कलावपि यथा शृणु ॥३१॥


इति द्वापरे उर्वीश
thus, in Dwaapara, O King!
स्तुवन्ति जगत्-ईश्वरम्
extol of the universe The Lord
नाना-तन्त्र-विधानेन
by various Tantric rituals
कलौ-अपि यथा शृणु
in Kali also how hear

This is how The Lord of the universe is extolled in the Dwaapara age, O King! Now hear, how He is worshipped in the Kali age also, by various Tantric rituals.


कृष्णवर्णं त्विषाकृष्णं साङ्गोपाङ्गास्त्रपार्षदम् ।

यज्ञै: सङ्कीर्तनप्रायैर्यजन्ति हि सुमेधस: ॥३२॥


कृष्ण-वर्णम् त्विषा-कृष्णम्
dark complexioned, by lustre, Krishna
स-अङ्ग-उपाङ्ग-अस्त्र-पार्षदम्
with limbs adorned, wielding weapons, with attendents,
यज्ञै: सङ्कीर्तन-प्रायै:-
by sacrifices and chanting mostly,
यजन्ति हि सुमेधस:
worship indeed, the wise

The wise worship Lord Krishna, dark in complexion, with bright lustre, limbs adorned with ornaments, wielding weapons, attended by attendents, by sacrifices and mostly by chanting His names.


ध्येयं सदा परिभवघ्नमभीष्टदोहं तीर्थास्पदं शिवविरिञ्चिनुतं शरण्यम् ।

भृत्यार्तिहं प्रणतपाल भवाब्धिपोतं वन्दे महापुरुष ते चरणारविन्दम् ॥३३॥


ध्येयम् सदा परिभव-घ्नम्-
to be meditated upon, always, of all defeats The Killer
अभीष्ट-दोहम् तीर्थ-आस्पदम्
desired boons Yielder, of holy places The Focus
शिव-विरिञ्चि-नुतम् शरण्यम्
by Shiva and Brahmaa extolled, worthy as a resort,
भृत्य-आर्ति-हन् प्रणत-पाल
of servants' sorrows Dispeller, of surrendered, Protector,
भव-अब्धि-पोतम्
of the mundane existence ocean, the Boat,
वन्दे महा-पुरुष ते चरण-अरविन्दम्
I bow, O Supreme Person! at Your feet lotuses

O Supreme Person! I bow at Your feet lotuses, You, Who should be meditated upon always, The Killer of all defeats, The Yielder of desired boons, The Centre of holy places, extolled by Shiva and Brahmaa, worthy as a Resort, The Dispeller of the sorrows of the servants, The Protector of the surrendered, and the Boat in the ocean of mundane existence.


त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजसुरेप्सितराज्यलक्ष्मीं धर्मिष्ठ आर्यवचसा यदगादरण्यम् ।

मायामृगं दयितयेप्सितमन्वधावद् वन्दे महापुरुष ते चरणारविन्दम् ॥३४॥


त्यक्त्वा सु-दुस्त्यज-सुर-ईप्सित-
forsaking the very difficult to give up, by gods coveted
राज्य-लक्ष्मीम् धर्मिष्ठ
royal fortune, O Righteous Person!
आर्य-वचसा यत्-अगात्-अरण्यम्
By revered (father's) words, in that went to the forest,
माया-मृगम् दयितया-ईप्सितम्-
the illusory deer, by beloved wife, sought,
अन्वधावद् वन्दे महापुरुष
ran after, I bow, O Supreme Purush
ते चरण-अरविन्दम्
to Your lotus feet

O Supreme Purusha! I bow to Your lotus feet, which went away to the forest on the words of the revered father, forsaking the very difficult to be given up, and coveted by the gods, the royal fortunes, and which ran after the illusory deer sought by the beloved wife Sita.


एवं युगानुरूपाभ्यां भगवान् युगवर्तिभि: ।

मनुजैरिज्यते राजन् श्रेयसामीश्वरो हरि: ॥३५॥


एवम् युग-अनुरूपाभ्याम्
in this manner, in ages according to name and form
भगवान् युग-वर्तिभि:
The Lord, with the ages changing
मनुजै:-इज्यते राजन्
people, is worshipped, O King!
श्रेयसाम्-ईश्वर: हरि:
of the blessings The Bestower, Shree Hari

O King! In this manner according to the ages with their names and forms changing, the people of those ages change and worship The Lord, the Bestower of Blessings, Shree Hari.


कलिं सभाजयन्त्यार्या गुणज्ञा: सारभागिन: ।

यत्र सङ्कीर्तनेनैव सर्व: स्वार्थोऽभिलभ्यते ॥३६॥


कलि सभाजयन्ति-आर्या:
Kali appreciate, the noble
गुण-ज्ञा: सार-भागिन:
worth knowers, the essence picking up,
यत्र सङ्कीर्तनेन्-एव
where by chanting alone
सर्व: स्वार्थ:-अभिलभ्यते
all own desires are fulfilled

The noble people, the knowers of the worth and those who pick up the essence, appreciate the age of Kaliyuga, because, in this age only by chanting the names of the Lord, one can get all the desires of the self fulfilled.


न ह्यत: परमो लाभो देहिनां भ्राम्यतामिह ।

यतो विन्देत परमां शान्तिं नश्यति संसृति: ॥३७॥


न हि-अत: परम: लाभ:
not indeed from this is more supreme benefit
देहिनाम् भ्राम्यताम्-इह
for the embodied, lost here,
यत: विन्देत परमाम् शान्तिम्
from which gain highest peace,
नश्यति संसृति:
and ends birth and death

For the embodied beings, there is more greater benefit than this that, from chanting the names, one attains the highest peace and his cycle of birth and death ends.


कृतादिषु प्रजा राजन् कलाविच्छन्ति सम्भवम् ।

कलौ खलु भविष्यन्ति नारायणपरायणा: ॥३८॥


कृत-आदिषु प्रजा राजन्
in Krita and other (ages) people, O King!
कलौ-इच्छन्ति सम्भवम्
in Kali desire to be born
कलौ खलु भविष्यन्ति
in Kali surely will be
नारायण-परायणा:
Naaraayana devotees

The people, in the ages Krita and others, seek to be born in Kaliyuga, because in this age only, there will certainly be the devotees of Naaraayana.


क्वचित् क्वचिन्महाराज द्रविडेषु च भूरिश: ।

ताम्रपर्णी नदी यत्र कृतमाला पयस्विनी ॥३९॥


क्वचित् क्वचित्-महाराज
here and there, O Great King!
द्रविडेषु च भूरिष:
in Dravida, and mostly
ताम्रपर्णी नदी यत्र
Taamraparnee river where
कृतमाला पयस्विनी
Kritamaalaa Payasvani

O Great King! Mostly the devotees will be more in the Dravida territory, South India, where the rivers Taamraparnee, Kritamaalaa and Payasvani flow.


कावेरी च महापुण्या प्रतीची च महानदी ।

ये पिबन्ति जलं तासां मनुजा मनुजेश्वर ।

प्रायो भक्ता भगवति वासुदेवेऽमलाशया: ॥४०॥


कावेरी च महा-पुण्या
Kaaveri and the highly auspicious,
प्रतीची च महा-नदी
Prateechi and the great river,
ये पिबन्ति जलम् तासाम्
those who drink the water theirs'
मनुजा: मनुजेश्वर
people, O peoples' Ruler!
प्राय: भक्ता: भगवति
generally are devotees of The Lord
वासुदेवे-अमल-आशया:
Vaasudeva with flawless devotion

O Ruler of the people! Those who drink the water of the highly auspicious Kaaveri and the great river Prateechi, are generally devotees, and they have flawless devotion in The Lord Vaasudeva.


देवर्षिभूताप्तनृणां पितृणां न किङ्करो नायमृणी च राजन् ।

सर्वात्मना य: शरणं शरण्यं गतो मुकुन्दं परिहृत्य कर्तम् ॥४१॥


देव-ऋषि-भूत-आप्त-नृणाम्
of gods, sages, living beings, dear people,
पितृणाम् न किङ्कर:
the manes, not is servant
न-अयम्-ऋणी च राजन्
nor this is indebted and O King!
सर्व-आत्मना य: शरणम्
whole heartedly who is surrendered
शरण्यम् गत: मुकुन्दम्
to the protection seeks of Mukunda,
परिहृत्य कर्तम्
renouncing all obligations

O king! One who renounces all obligations, and whole heartedly surrenders and seeks protection from The Protector Mukunda, is neither a servant nor indebted to the gods, sages, living beings, dear people, and to the manes.


स्वपादमूलं भजत: प्रियस्य त्यक्तान्यभावस्य हरि: परेश: ।

विकर्म यच्चोत्पतितं कथञ्चिद् धुनोति सर्व हृदि सन्निविष्ट: ॥४२॥


स्व-पाद-मूलम् भजत:
Own feet soles worshipper
प्रियस्य त्यक्त-अन्य-भावस्य
of the beloved, forsaken all other attachments
हरि: परेश:
Shee Hari, The Supreme Lord
विकर्म यत्-च-उत्पतितम्
sin if also commits,
कथञ्चिद् धुनोति सर्व
somehow, washes off all
हृदि सन्निविष्ट:
in (his) heart enshrined

Enshrined in the heart of His beloved devotee, who is the worshipper of His own feet, and has forsaken all attachments, Shee Hari, The Supreme Lord, somehow washes away all his sins, even if committed by him.


नारद उवाच -
Naarada said -
धर्मान् भागवतानित्थं श्रुत्वा मिथिलेश्वर: ।

जायन्तेयान् मुनीन् प्रीत: सोपाध्यायो ह्यपूजयत् ॥४३॥


धर्मान् भागवतान्-इत्थम्
of the righteous paths, of The Lord, thus,
श्रुत्वा मिथिलेश्वर:
hearing, the Mithilaa King, (Nimi)
जायन्तेयान् मुनीन् प्रीत:
of Jayanti born the sages(nine), delighted,
स:-उपाध्याय: हि-अपूजयत्
he with the priests, indeed worshipped

The king of Mithilaa, Nimi, having thus heard of the paths of righteousness, pertaining to The Lord, was pleased and with his priests worshipped the nine sages born of Jayanta.


ततोऽन्तर्दधिरे सिद्धा: सर्वलोकस्य पश्यत: ।

राजा धर्मानुपातिष्ठन्नवाप परमां गतिम् ॥४४॥


तत:-अन्त:-दधिरे सिद्धा:
then, vanished out of sight, the learned sages,
सर्व-लोकस्य पश्यत:
as all the people looked on,
राजा धर्मान्-उपातिष्ठन्-
the king, the righteous paths following
अवाप परमाम् गतिम्
attained the supreme goal

Then, as the people looked on, the learned sages vanished out of sight. The king, following the course of the righteous paths, attained the supreme goal.


त्वमप्येतान् महाभाग धर्मान् भागवताञ्छ्रुतान् ।

आस्थित: श्रद्धया युक्तो नि:सङ्गो यास्यसे परम् ॥४५॥


त्वम्-अपि-एतान् महाभाग
Yourself also, these, O highly blessed!
धर्मान् भागवतान्-श्रुतान्
The righteous paths, of The Lord, heard,
आस्थित: श्रद्धया युक्त:
following, with faith having
नि:सङ्ग: यास्यसे परम्
unattached, will reach the highest (goal)

O Highly blessed Vasudeva! These righteous paths of The Lord, which you have heard of, Yourself practicing them with full faith and remaining unattached, will reach the highest goal.


युवयो: खलु दम्पत्योर्यशसा पूरितं जगत् ।

पुत्रतामगमद् यद् वां भगवानीश्वरो हरि: ॥४६॥


युवयो: खलु दम्पत्यो:-
of you both, indeed, the couple
यशसा पूरितम् जगत्
by the fame is filled the world
पुत्रताम्-अगमत् यत् वाम्
son hood attained, in that of you both
भगवान्-ईश्वर: हरि:
The Lord Almighty Shree Hari

Indeed the fame of you both, the couple fills the whole world, in that, The Lord Almighty Shree Hari, has taken on to be a son to you two.


दर्शनालिङ्गनालापै: शयनासनभोजनै: ।

आत्मा वां पावित: कृष्णे पुत्रस्नेहं प्रकुर्वतो: ॥४७॥


दर्शन-आलिङ्गन्-आलापै:
by the sight, embrace, talk,
शयन-आसन-भोजनै:
sleep, sitting, feeding
आत्मा वाम् पावित:
soul yours' will be pure,
कृष्णे पुत्र-स्नेहम् प्रकुर्वतो:
in Krishna, paternal love cherishing

Your souls are purified by cherishing paternal love for Shree Krishna and also by His sight, embracing Him, talking to Him, making Him sleep and sit, and feeding Him.


वैरेण यं नृपतय: शिशुपालपौण्ड्रशाल्वादयो गतिविलासविलोकनाद्यै: ।

ध्यायन्त आकृतधिय: शयनासनादौ तत्साम्यमापुरनुरक्तधियां पुन: किम् ॥४८॥


वैरेण यम् नृपतय:
by animosity, Whom, the kings
शिशुपाल-पौण्ड्र-शाल्व-आदय:
Shishupaala, Paundra, Shaalva and others,
गति-विलास-विलोकन-आद्यै:
by gait, graceful movements, glances, and others
ध्यायन्त: आकृत-धिय: शयन-आसन-
remembering, form in mind, in sleeping sitting
आदौ तत्-साम्यम्-आपु:-
and others, His sameness attained
अनुरक्त-धियाम् पुन: किम्
of the affectionate minded, again what

When the kings Shishupaala, Paundra, Shaalva and others, by animosity, remembered His gait, graceful movements, glances, and His form in the mind, when they were sleeping and sitting, etc., attained His same-ness, then what of those who remember Him with affectionate minds?


मापत्यबुद्धिमकृथा: कृष्णे सर्वात्मनीश्वरे ।

मायामनुष्यभावेन गूढैश्वर्ये परेऽव्यये ॥४९॥


मा-अपत्य-बुद्धिम्-अकृथा:
do not, son's feeling, have
कृष्णे सर्व-आत्मन्-ईश्वरे
in Krishna, of all the Souls, The Lord,
माया-मनुष्य-भावेन
by the illusory mortal man in disguise,
गूढ-ऐश्वर्ये परे-अव्यये
concealed in sport, The Beyond, The Immortal

In Krishna, The universal Soul, The Lord, Who has, as a sport, concealed His glory in the illusory form of a mortal man, is Immortal and is beyond this all, do not hold the feeling of a son for Him.


भूभारासुरराजन्यहन्तवे गुप्तये सताम् ।

अवतीर्णस्य निर्वृत्यै यशो लोके वितन्यते ॥५०॥


भूभार-असुर-राजन्य-
earth's burden demon kings to kill
हन्तवेगुप्तये सताम्
for protection of the noble,
अवतीर्णस्य निर्वृत्यै
descended for the liberation
यश: लोके वितन्यते
fame in the world is spread

He descended to kill the demon kings, the burden of the earth, and to protect the noble. It is for the liberation of the people that His fame is spread in the world.


श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाभागो वसुदेवोऽतिविस्मित: ।

देवकी च महाभागा जहतुर्मोहमात्मन: ॥५१॥


एतत्-श्रुत्वा महाभाग:
this hearing, the highly blessed
वसुदेव:-अति-विस्मित:
Vasudeva was very surprised,
देवकी च महाभागा
Devaki and highly fortunate
जहतु:-मोहम्-आत्मन:
shed illusion of themselves

On hearing this, the highly blessed and most fortunate Vasudeva and Devaki were very surprised and shed their own delusion of Krishna being their son.


इतिहासमिमं पुण्यं धारयेद् य: समाहित: ।

स विधूयेह शमलं ब्रह्मभूयाय कल्पते ॥५२॥


इतिहासम्-इमम् पुण्यम्
story this sacred
धारयेद् य: समाहित:
holds whoever with concentration,
स: विधूय-इह शमलम्
he, shaking off here, the sins,
ब्रह्म-भूयाय कल्पते
for Brahma one-ness, qualifies

Who so ever retains this sacred story in his mind with concentration, shakes off his sins, here, and qualifies for one-ness with Brahman.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां

एकादशस्कन्धे पञ्चम: अध्याय: ॥५॥
