श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
अथ ब्रह्माऽऽत्मजैर्देवै: प्रजेशैरावृतोऽभ्यगात् ।
भवश्च भूतभव्येशो ययौ भूतगणैर्वृत: ॥१॥
अथ ब्रह्मा-आत्मजै:-देवै:
then, Brahmaa with his sons the sages,
प्रजेशै:-आवृत:-अभ्यगात्
the lords of creation, surrounded went,
भव:-च भूत-भव्य-ईश:
Shiva and of present and future The Lord,
ययौ भूतगणै:-वृत:
went, by the ghosts' hosts surrounded
Then, Brahmaa, went surrounded by the sages, his sons, the Sanakas, and the lords of creation, and Lord Shiva, The Lord of the present and the future, went surrounded by the hosts of ghosts.
इन्द्रो मरुद्भिर्भगवानादित्या वसवोऽश्विनौ ।
ऋभवोऽङ्गिरसो रुद्रा विश्वे साध्याश्च देवता: ॥२॥
इन्द्र: मरुद्भि:-भगवान्-
Indra, with the Maruts, lord
आदित्या: वसव:-अश्विनौ
Aadityas, the Vasus, the two Ashwins,
ऋभव:-अङ्गिरस: रुद्रा:
Ribhus, Angirasa, Rudras,
विश्वे साध्या:-च देवता:
the Vishvedevas, Saadhyaas, and the gods
Indra, with the Maruts, the forty nine winds, Aditi's sons the lord Aadityas, the eight Vasus, the two Ashbins, Ribhu, Angirasa, Rudra and the gods Vishvedevas and Saadhyaas.
गन्धर्वाप्सरसो नागा: सिद्धचारणगुह्यका: ।
ऋषय: पितरश्चैव सविद्याधरकिन्नरा: ॥३॥
गन्धर्व-अप्सरस: नागा:
the Gandharvas, Apsaras, Naagas,
सिद्ध-चारण-गुह्यका:
Siddhas, Chaaranaas, Guhyakas,
ऋषय: पितर:-च-एव
the sages, manes, and also,
स-विद्याधर-किन्नरा:
with the Vidyaadharas, and Kinnaras
The Gandharvas, Apsaras, Naagas, Siddhas, Chaaranaas, Guhyakas, the sages, manes, and also, with the Vidyaadharas, and Kinnaras.
द्वारकामुपसंजग्मु: सर्वे कृष्णदिदृक्षव: ।
वपुषा येन भगवान् नरलोकमनोरम: ।
यशो वितेने लोकेषु सर्वलोकमलापहम् ॥४॥
द्वारकाम्-उपसंजग्मु:
to Dwaarakaa went
सर्वे कृष्ण-दिदृक्षव:
all Krishna wanting to meet
वपुषा येन भगवान्
by the form which The Lord
नर-लोक-मनोरम:
for the human beings enchanting
यश: वितेने लोकेषु
glory spread, in the universe,
सर्व-लोक-मल-अपहम्
of all the worlds sins destroyer
They all went to Dwaarakaa, with the desire to see Shree Krishna, the form by which The Lord had spread His glory enchanting to the human beings, and the destroyer of all the sins of the worlds.
तस्यां विभ्राजमानायां समृद्धायां महर्द्धिभि: ।
व्यचक्षतावितृप्ताक्षा: कृष्णमद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥५॥
तस्याम् विभ्राजमानायाम्
in there, resplendent,
समृद्धायाम् महत्-ऋद्धिभि:
prosperous, with great wealth,
व्यचक्षत्-अवितृप्त-अक्षा:
saw with insatiate eyes,
कृष्णम्-अद्भुत-दर्शनम्
Krishna, of wonderful looks
There, in that prosperous resplendent city abounding in great wealth, they saw Krishna of wonderful looks, with insatiate eyes.
स्वर्गोद्यानोपगैर्माल्यैश्छादयन्तो यदूत्तमम् ।
गीर्भिश्चित्रपदार्थाभिस्तुष्टुवुर्जगदीश्वरम् ॥६॥
स्वर्ग-उद्यान-उपगै:-माल्यै:-
heaven garden plucked (flowers) garlands
छादयन्त: यदु-उत्तमम्
covering the Yadus' scion,
गीर्भि:-चित्र-पद-अर्थाभि:-
with words various hymns and meanings
तुष्टुवु:-जगत्-ईश्वरम्
propitiated The Universe's Lord
They covered Him with garlands of flowers plucked from the heavens, and propitiated Him with various meaningful hymns, The Lord of the Universes.
देवा: ऊचु: -
The gods said -
नता: स्म ते नाथ पदारविन्दं बुद्धीन्द्रियप्राणमनोवचोभि: ।
यच्चिन्त्यतेऽन्तर्हृदि भावयुक्तैर्मुमुक्षुभि: कर्ममयोरुपाशात् ॥७॥
नता: स्म ते नाथ
(we) are bowed, to Your O Lord!
पद-अरविन्दम्
feet lotuses,
बुद्धि-इन्द्रिय-प्राण-मन:-वचोभि:
with reasons, senses, body, mind and speech
यत्-चिन्त्यते-अन्त:-हृदि
which meditate in their hearts
भाव-युक्तै:-मुमुक्षुभि:
with devotion, seeking deliverance
कर्म-मय-उरु-पाशात्
from Karma generated shackles
'O Lord! We, with our reasons, senses, body, mind and speech bow down to Your feet which are meditated upon with deep devotion in their hearts, by those who seek deliverance from the Karma generated shackles.'
त्वं मायया त्रिगुणयाऽऽत्मनि दुर्विभाव्यं व्यक्तं सृजस्यवसि लुम्पसि तद्गुणस्थ: ।
नैतैर्भवानजित कर्मभिरज्यते वै यत् स्वे सुखेऽव्यवहितेऽभिरतोऽनवद्य: ॥८॥
त्वम् मायया त्रिगुणया-आत्मनि
You by Maayaa of three Gunas, in Yourself,
दुर्विभाव्यम् व्यक्तम् सृजसि-
unfathomable, manifested (universe) create,
अवसि लुम्पसि तत्-गुण-स्थ:
preserve and destroy, in those Gunas presiding,
न एतै:-भवान्-अजित कर्मभि:-
not by these, You, O Invincible Lord! by actions
अज्यते वै यत् स्वे सुखे-
are tainted, indeed, in that, in own Bliss
अव्यवहिते-अभिरत:-अनवद्य:
unobscured remain absorbed, unblemished
O Invincible Lord! You by Your Maayaa, with its three Gunas, presiding over it, create, preserve and destroy this unfathomable manifested universe. Moreover, You are not tainted by those actions, and unblemished, remain absorbed in Your own unobscured Bliss.
शुद्धिर्नृणां न तु तथेड्य दुराशयानां विद्याश्रुताध्ययनदानतप: क्रियाभि: ।
सत्त्वात्मनामृषभ ते यशसि प्रवृद्धसच्छ्रद्धया श्रवणसम्भृतया यथा स्यात् ॥९॥
शुद्धि:-नृणाम् न तु तथा-ईड्य
purification of people, not thus, O praiseworthy
दुराशयानाम् विद्या-श्रुत-
of impure minded, by knowledge, scriptures
अध्ययन-दान-तप: क्रियाभि:
study, charity austerities, rituals,
सत्त्व-आत्मनाम्-ऋषभ ते
of the pure souled, O Supreme Lord! Your
यशसि प्रवृद्ध-सत्-श्रद्धया
glory increasing, with genuine faith
श्रवण-सम्भृतया यथा स्यात्
hearing constantly as becomes
O praiseworthy, Supreme Lord! The purification of the impure minded people is not so much affected by their knowledge, scriptures' study, charity, austerities, and rituals as of the pure souled people, by their constantly hearing with genuine faith, Your ever increasing glory.
स्यान्नस्तवाङ्घ्रिरशुभाशयधूमकेतु: क्षेमाय यो मुनिभिरार्द्रहृदोह्यमान: ।
य: सात्वतै: समविभूतय आत्मवद्भिर्व्यूहेऽर्चित: सवनश: स्वरतिक्रमाय ॥१०॥
स्यात्-न:-तव-अङ्घ्रि:-
may be, for us Your feet
अशुभ-आशय-धूमकेतु:
for evil longings missile
क्षेमाय य: मुनिभि:-
for the well being which by the sages
आर्द्र-हृद-ऊह्यमान:
in (their) soft hearts are carried,
य: सात्वतै: समविभूतय:
which by the devotees for the same glories
आत्मवद्भि:-व्यूहे-अर्चित:
by the Self knowers, in order, worshipped
सवनश: स्व:-अतिक्रमाय
three times a day, for heaven transcending
O Lord! May Your feet be the missile to burn our evil longings, which the sages carry in their soft hearts, which the devotees worship for attaining the glories like Your own, and the knowers of the self worship in order, three times a day to transcend the heavens and attain Your abode.
यश्चिन्त्यते प्रयतपाणिभिरध्वराग्नौ त्रय्या निरुक्तविधिनेश हविर्गृहीत्वा ।
अध्यात्मयोग उत योगिभिरात्ममायां जिज्ञासुभि: परमभागवतै: परीष्ट: ॥११॥
य:-चिन्त्यते प्रयत-पाणिभि:-
who contemplates, steady handed
अध्वर-अग्नौ त्रय्या-निरुक्त-
in sacrificial fire, by the three Vedas
विधिना-ईश हवि:-गृहीत्वा
procedure, O Lord! Oblation holding,
अध्यात्म-योग उत
in realization of The Soul's yoga, surely,
योगिभि:-आत्म-मायाम्
by the yogis, The Spirit (veiling) Maayaa
जिज्ञासुभि: परम-भागवतै: परीष्ट:
inquisitive, by great devotees, The Supreme Lord
The feet which are contemplated upon by those who steadily hold in their hands the ladle containing the oblation to be poured in the sacrificial fire, according to the procedure laid down by the three Vedas, which, by the yogis on the path of The Self realization, inquisitive of the veil of Maayaa, and by the great devotees who consider them The Supreme Lord himself.
पर्युष्टया तव विभो वनमालयेयं संस्पर्धिनी भगवती प्रतिपत्निवच्छ्री: ।
य: सुप्रणीतममुयार्हणमाददन्नो भूयात् सदाङ्घ्रिरशुभाशयधूमकेतु: ॥१२॥
पर्युष्टया तव विभो
by the unfresh, Your O Almighty Lord,
वनमालया-इयम् संस्पर्धिनी
the garland, this, vies,
भगवती प्रतिपत्निवत्-श्री:
with The Goddess, a co-wife like, Shree
य: सुप्रणीतम्-अमुया-अर्हणम्-
Who well worshipped by this, the worship
आददत्-न: भूयात् सदा-अङ्घ्रि:-
accept, to us, may be always the feet,
अशुभ-आशय-धूमकेतु:
of evil tendencies the fire missile
O Almighty Lord, Shree, The Goddess Laxmi, a co-wife like, vies, with the unfresh garland on Your bosom, but You accept the well worshipped worship with that garland. May Your feet always be the fire missile to all our evil tendencies.
केतुस्त्रिविक्रमयुतस्त्रिपतत्पताको यस्ते भयाभयकरोऽसुरदेवचम्वो: ।
स्वर्गाय साधुषु खलेष्वितराय भूमन् पाद: पुनातु भगवन् भजतामघं न: ॥१३॥
केतु:-त्रि-विक्रम-युत:
fire missile, three steps containing
त्रि-पतत्-पताक: य:-ते
three falling flags, that Your
भय-अभय-कर:-
fear fearlessness causing,
असुर-देव-चम्वो:
for the Asuras and gods' armies,
स्वर्गाय साधुषु
for heaven for the noble
खलेषु-इतराय भूमन्
for the wicked otherwise, O Omnipresent!
पाद: पुनातु भगवन्
feet may purify O Almighty!
भजताम्-अघम् न:
of the worshippers' sins ours
O Omnipresent! O Almighty Lord! Your feet containing the three strides, stood as a flag with three streams, causing fear and fearlessness for the armies of the Asuras and the gods respectively, and which bring heaven to the noble and ruin to the wicked, may prove to be the fire missile and burn our sins, we, who worship You.
नस्योतगाव इव यस्य वशे भवन्ति ब्रह्मादयस्तनुभृतो मिथुरर्द्यमाना: ।
कालस्य ते प्रकृतिपूरुषयो: परस्य शं नस्तनोतु चरण: पुरुषोत्तमस्य ॥१४॥
नस्योत-गाव: इव यस्य वशे
by nose stringed bull like, in Whose control
भवन्ति ब्रह्मा-आदय:-
become Brahmaa and other
तनु-भृत: मिथु:-अर्द्यमाना:
embodied beings, mutually tormenting,
कालस्य ते प्रकृति-पूरुषयो:
of Time (Spirit) You, of Prakriti and Purusha
परस्य शम् न:-तनोतु
beyond, peace to us may bring
चरण: पुरुषोत्तमस्य
the feet of The Person Supreme
Under Whose control, Brahmaa and other embodied beings, tormenting mutually, are, like the bull controlled by the nose string, You, as Time Spirit are beyond Prakriti and Purush, may the feet of That Supreme Person, You, bring peace and joy to us.
अस्यासि हेतुरुदयस्थितिसंयमानामव्यक्तजीवमहतामपि कालमाहु: ।
सोऽयं त्रिणाभिरखिलापचये प्रवृत्त: कालो गभीररय उत्तमपूरुषस्त्वम् ॥१५॥
अस्य-असि हेतु:-दय-स्थिति-
of this, (universe) are the cause, of creation, continuance
उसंयमानाम्-अव्यक्त-जीव-
and destruction, of Prakriti, Purusha,
महताम्-अपि कालम्-आहु:
and Mahat-tatvas also, Time are called,
स:-अयम् त्रि-नाभि:-अखिल-
That this by three navels, of the whole
अपचये प्रवृत्त: काल: गभीर-रय
to destruct engaged, Time of imperceptible speed
उत्तम-पूरुष:-त्वम्
The Supreme Person, You
You are The Supreme Person, the cause of this universe, its creation, continuance and destruction, of Prakriti, Purusha, and the Mahat-tatvas also. You are named as Time, of imperceptible speed, Who by three navels are engaged in the destruction of this whole universe.
त्वत्त: पुमान् समधिगम्य यया स्ववीर्यं धत्ते महान्तमिव गर्भममोघवीर्य: ।
सोऽयं तयानुगत आत्मन आण्डकोशं हैमं ससर्ज बहिरावरणैरुपेतम् ॥१६॥
त्वत्त: पुमान् समधिगम्य यया
from You, the Spirit, deriving by which (Maayaa)
स्व-वीर्यम् धत्ते महान्तम्-
own power holds in the Mahat-tatva
इव गर्भम्-अमोघ-वीर्य:
as if, the seed of unfailing energy
स:-अयम् तया-अनुगत:
that this (Mahat-tatva) by Her (Maayaa) followed,
आत्मन: आण्ड-कोशम् हैमम्
from its own self the egg shell golden
ससर्ज बहि:-आवरणै:-उपेतम्
produced, with the out layers enveloped
The Spirit derives its power of unfailing energy, from You, following Maayaa and in conjunction with it, places its seed as it were, in the Mahat-tatva, which then produces the golden egg shell of the universe enveloped by seven external sheaths.
तत्तस्थुषश्च जगतश्च भवानधीशो यन्माययोत्थगुणविक्रिययोपनीतान् ।
अर्थाञ्जुषन्नपि हृषीकपते न लिप्तो येऽन्ये स्वत: परिहृतादपि बिभ्यति स्म ॥१७॥
तत्-तस्थुष:-च जगत:-च
that of the immobile and the mobile
भवान्-अधीश: यत्-मायया-
You are The Ruler, because by Maayaa
उत्थ-गुण-विक्रियय-उपनीतान्
brought about the Gunas', modifications attained
अर्थान्-जुषन्-अपि हृषीकपते
senses, enjoying also, O Lord of the senses!
न लिप्त: ये-अन्ये स्वत:
are not effected, those others, by themselves
परिहृतात्-अपि बिभ्यति स्म
having given up also, afraid are of
You are The Ruler of immobile and the mobile. By Maayaa, the modifications brought about in the Gunas, and the senses attained thereby, even though, You enjoy them as the beings, but are not effected by them, whereas, the others, the jivas, even if they themselves give up the sense enjoyments, they are afraid of them.
स्मायावलोकलवदर्शितभावहारिभ्रूमण्डलप्रहितसौरतमन्त्रशौण्डै: ।
पत्न्यस्तु षोडशसहस्रमनङ्गवाणैर्यस्येन्द्रियं विमथितुं करणैर्न विभ्व्य: ॥१८॥
स्माय-अवलोक-लव-दर्शित-
by smiles, glances sidelong flaunting,
भाव-हारि-भ्रू-मण्डल-
by senses stealing, eyebrows both
प्रहित-सौरत-मन्त्र-शौण्डै:
sending amorous messages, talks mature,
पत्न्य:-तु षोडश-सहस्रम्-
the wives indeed sixteen thousand
अनङ्ग-वाणै:-यस्य-इन्द्रियम्
by Cupid's arrows, Whose senses
विमथितुम् करणै:-न विभ्व्य:
to shake by the senses' charms were not able
You, Whose sixteen thousand wives were not able to shake Your mind by their soft smiles, sidelong glances, by the senses stealing two eyebrows' charms sending amorous messages, mature talks, and by the senses' charming arrows of Cupid.
विभ्व्यस्तवामृतकथोदवहास्त्रिलोक्या: पादावनेजसरित: शमलानि हन्तुम् ।
आनुश्रवं श्रुतिभिरङ्घ्रिजमङ्गसङ्गैस्तीर्थद्वयं शुचिषदस्त उपस्पृशन्ति ॥१९॥
विभ्व्य:-तव-अमृत-कथा-
capable, (are) Your nectar like stories,
उदवहा:-त्रि-लोक्या: पाद-
rivers like, the three worlds, by feet
अवनेज-सरित: शमलानि हन्तुम्
washed water river (Gangaa) the sins to destroy
आनुश्रवम् श्रुतिभि:-अङ्घ्रिजम्-
regularly hearing from Vedas, from the feet emanating,
अङ्ग-सङ्गै:-तीर्थ-द्वयम्
by the body's touch, the holy places two,
शुचि-षद:-ते उपस्पृशन्ति
the pure minded, Yours' resort to
Your nectar like stories are like rivers, and Your feet washed water flowing is the river Ganga, they both are capable of destroying the sins. The pure minded take advantage of both these, by regularly hearing Your glories, through the Vedas, and by touching Your feet with their bodies and thereby bathing in the river Gangaa.
बादरायणि:-उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्यभिष्टूय विबुधै: सेश: शतधृतिर्हरिम् ।
अभ्यभाषत गोविन्दं प्रणम्याम्बरमाश्रित: ॥२०॥
इति-अभिष्टूय विबुधै: स-ईश:
thus having glorified, with the gods, with Shiva,
शतधृति:-हरिम्
Brahmaa to Shree Hari
अभ्यभाषत गोविन्दम्
said to Shree Krishna,
प्रणम्य-अम्बरम्-आश्रित:
bowing, in the air standing
Brahmaa, with the gods and with Lord Shiva, thus glorified Shree Hari. Then standing in the air, he bowed to Shree Krishna and said to Him,….
ब्रह्मा-उवाच -
Brahmaa said -
भूमेर्भारावताराय पुरा विज्ञापित: प्रभो ।
त्वमस्माभिरशेषात्मंस्तत्तथैवोपपादितम् ॥२१॥
भूमे:-भार-अवताराय
earth's burden, to remove,
पुरा विज्ञापित: प्रभो
formerly beseeched, O Almighty Lord!
त्वम्-अस्माभि:-अशेष-आत्मन्-
You by us, O! of all The Inner Controller,
तत्-तथा-एव-उपपादितम्
that, like that only is accomplished
O Almighty Lord! We had formerly beseeched You to relieve the burden of the earth. O Inner Controller of all, that has been accomplished as desired.
धर्मश्च स्थापित: सत्सु सत्यसन्धेषु वै त्वया ।
कीर्तिश्च दिक्षु विक्षिप्ता सर्वलोकमलापहा ॥२२॥
धर्म:-च स्थापित: सत्सु
righteousness and established in the virtuous,
सत्यसन्धेषु वै त्वया
in truth given to, indeed by You,
कीर्ति:-च दिक्षु विक्षिप्ता
glory and in the directions spread,
सर्व-लोक-मल-अपहा
of all the worlds' sins destroyer
Indeed, among those who are given to Truth, righteousness is established by You. And Your glory, the destroyer of all the sins, of all the worlds, is spread in all the directions.
अवतीर्य यदोर्वंशे विभ्रद् रूपमनुत्तमम् ।
कर्माण्युद्दामवृत्तानि हिताय जगतोऽकृथा: ॥२३॥
अवतीर्य यदो:-वंशे
descending in the Yadu clan,
विभ्रद् रूपम्-अनुत्तमम्
effulgent with a form unmatched,
कर्माणि-उद्दाम-वृत्तानि
deeds of valour and compassion
हिताय जगत:-अकृथा:
for the benefit of the world did
You, descending in the clan of the Yadus', effulgent in an unmatched form, did deeds of valour and compassion for the benefit of the world.
यानि ते चरितानीश मनुष्या: साधव: कलौ ।
शृण्वन्त: कीर्तयन्तश्च तरिश्यन्त्यञ्जसा तम: ॥२४॥
यानि ते चरितानि-ईश
those of Your exploits, O Lord!
मनुष्या: साधव: कलौ
the men, virtuous, in Kali,
शृण्वन्त: कीर्तयन्त:-च
hearing , chanting and
तरिश्यन्ति-अञ्जसा तम:
will overcome easily the darkness
O Lord! Those exploits of Yours, the virtuous men, on hearing and singing, will easily overcome the darkness of ignorance.
यदुवंशेऽवतीर्णस्य भवत: पुरुषोत्तम ।
शरच्छतं व्यतीयाय पञ्चविंशाधिकं प्रभो ॥२५॥
यदु-वंशे-अवतीर्णस्य
in Yadu clan descended,
भवत: पुरुषोत्तम
of You, O Supreme Purusha!
शरत्-शतम् व्यतीयाय
autumns hundred have passed,
पञ्च-विंश-अधिकम् प्रभो
twenty five more, O Almighty!
O Supreme Person! More than a hundred and twenty five years have passed since You, O Almighty descended in the clan of the Yadus.
नाधुना तेऽखिलाधार देवकार्यावशेषितम् ।
कुलं च विप्रशापेन नष्टप्रायमभूदिदम् ॥२६॥
न-अधुना ते-अखिल-आधार
not now, Your, of all The Support
देव-कार्य-अवशेषितम्
of the gods' purpose remains
कुलम् च विप्र-शापेन
race and by Braahmana's curse
नष्ट-प्रायम्-अभूत्-इदम्
extinct almost is, this
O Support of all! now, no part of the purpose of the gods' remains to be accomplished, and Your clan is also almost extinct, by the curse of the Braahmana.
तत: स्वधाम परमं विशस्व यदि मन्यसे ।
सलोकाँल्लोकपालान् न: पाहि वैकुण्ठकिङ्करान् ॥२७॥
तत: स्वधाम परमम्
therefore, to own abode transcendent
विशस्व यदि मन्यसे
return if You please,
स-लोकान्-लोकपालान्
with the worlds, and the guardians,
न: पाहि वैकुण्ठ-किङ्करान्
us, bless, Vaikuntha, the servants
Therefore, if it pleases You, do return to Your transcendent abode, Vaikuntha, and bless us the servants, along with the worlds, and the guardians.
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
अवधारितमेतन्मे यदात्थविबुधेश्वर ।
कृतं व: कार्यमखिलं भूमेर्भारोऽवतारित: ॥२८॥
अवधारितम्-एतत्-मे
is decided this by Me,
यत्-आत्थ-विबुध-ईश्वर
what said (you) of gods the ruler,
कृतम् व: कार्यम्-अखिलम्
is done your work entire
भूमे:-भर:-अवतारित:
of the earth the burden is removed
O Ruler of the gods! I have already decided about what you have said. Your entire work has been done, and the burden of the earth has also been removed.
तदिदं यादवकुलं वीर्यशौर्यश्रियौद्धतम् ।
लोकं जिघृक्षद् रुद्धं मे वेलयेव महार्णव: ॥२९॥
तत्-इदम् यादव-कुलम्
that this Yaadava clan
वीर्य-शौर्य-श्रिया-उद्धतम्
by power, valour, abundance, is insolent,
लोकम् जिघृक्षत् रुद्धम् मे
the worlds to annihilate is eager, is controlled by Me,
वेलया-इव महा-अर्णव:
by the shores like the great ocean
This clan of the Yaadavaas has become insolent by the power, valour and abundance, and is eager to annihilate the whole world. It is controlled by Me, like the great ocean is controlled by the shore.
यद्यसंहृत्य दृप्तानां यदूनां विपुलं कुलम् ।
गन्तास्म्यनेन लोकोऽयमुद्वेलेन विनङ्क्ष्यति ॥३०॥
यदि-असंहृत्य दृप्तानाम्
if without destroying the arrogant
यदूनाम् विपुलम् कुलम्
Yaadavaas extensive clan,
गन्ता-अस्मि-अनेन लोक:-अयम्-
go away I, by it the world this
उद्वेलेन विनङ्क्ष्यति
by its surging, will be destroyed
If, I go away without destroying this extensive arrogant clan of the Yaadavaas, they with their up surging will destroy the whole world.
इदानीं नाश आरब्ध: कुलस्य द्विजशापत: ।
यास्यामि भवनं ब्रह्मन्नेतदन्ते तवानघ ॥३१॥
इदानीम् नाश: आरब्ध:
now, the destruction has started
कुलस्य द्विज-शापत:
of the race by the Braahmana's curse
यास्यामि भवनम् ब्रह्मन्-
will go to the abode, O Brahman,
एतत्-अन्ते तव-अनघ
after this ends, O Sinless One!
O Sinless Brahman! the destruction of the race has started by the curse of the Braahmana. After all this is over, I will ascend to your realm.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
इत्युक्तो लोकनाथेन स्वयम्भू: प्रणिपत्य तम् ।
सह देवगणैर्देव: स्वधाम समपद्यत ॥३२॥
इति-उक्त: लोकनाथेन
so told by The Lord of the universe
स्वयम्भू: प्रणिपत्य तम्
Brahmaa, bowing to Him,
सह देवगणै:-देव:
with the gods hosts, the god
स्व-धाम समपद्यत
to own realm returned
So told by The Lord of the Universe, the self-born god Brahmaa, bowed to Him, and with the hosts of gods returned to his own realm.
अथ तस्यां महोत्पातान् द्वारवत्यां समुत्थितान् ।
विलोक्य भगवानाह यदुवृद्धान् समागतान् ॥३३॥
अथ तस्याम् महा-उत्पातान्
then, in that, great calamities
द्वारवत्याम् समुत्थितान्
in Dwaarakaa arising,
विलोक्य भगवान्-आह
observing, The Almighty Lord said
यदु-वृद्धान् समागतान्
to the Yadu's elderly, assembled
Then, observing the great calamities arising in that Dwaarakaa, The Almighty Lord said to the assembled elderly people of the Yadus'.
श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
एते वै सुमहोत्पाता व्युत्तिष्ठन्तीह सर्वत: ।
शापश्च न: कुलस्यासीद् ब्राह्मणेभ्यो दुरत्यय: ॥३४॥
एते वै सुमहा-उत्पाता:
these indeed great calamities
व्युत्तिष्ठन्ति-इह सर्वत:
appearing here from everywhere
शाप:-च न: कुलस्य-आसीद्
curse and on our race is there
ब्राह्मणेभ्य: दुरत्यय:
by the Braahmanas unavoidable
There are these grave calamities appearing here from every where. Moreover, there is the curse on our race by the Braahmanas which is not easy to overcome.
न वस्तव्यमिहास्माभिर्जिजीविषुभिरार्यका: ।
प्रभासं सुमहत्पुण्यं यास्यामोऽद्यैव मा चिरम् ॥३५॥
न वस्तव्यम्-इह-अस्माभि:-
should not stay here we,
जिजीविषुभि:-आर्यका:
willing to live, O respected ones!
प्रभासम् सुमहत्-पुण्यम्
to Prabhaasa, the very sacred
यास्याम:-अद्य-एव मा चिरम्
will go, today only, do not delay
O respected ones! We, who wish to live, should not stay here any longer. We will go to the very sacred Prabhaasa today only, without delay.
यत्रस्नात्वा दक्षशापाद् गृहीतो यक्ष्मणोडुराट् ।
विमुक्त: किल्बिषात् सद्यो भेजे भूय: कलोदयम् ॥३६॥
यत्र-स्नात्वा दक्ष-शापात्
where having bathed, from Daksha's curse
गृहीत: यक्ष्मण:-उडुराट्
seized by tuberculosis, the ruler of the stars,
विमुक्त: किल्बिषात् सद्य:
was rid of the trouble soon,
भेजे भूय: कला-उदयम्
enjoyed again the waxing of his digits
Bathing where, the moon, the ruler of the stars, who was cursed by Daksha, and was seized by tuberculosis, was instantly rid of his trouble, and again enjoyed the waxing of his digits.
वयं च तस्मिन्नाप्लुत्य तर्पयित्वा पितृन् सुरान् ।
भोजयित्वोशिजो विप्रान् नानागुणवतान्धसा ॥३७॥
वयम् च तस्मिन्-आप्लुत्य
we, also, in that plunging,
तर्पयित्वा पितृन् सुरान्
gratifying the manes and gods,
भोजयित्वा-उशिज: विप्रान्
feeding with delicacies the Braahmanas
नाना-गुणवत्-अन्धसा
with various qualities of food
We also, will bathe in those waters and will gratify the manes and gods, and feed the Braahmanas with delicacies and various tastes and types of food.
तेषु दानानि पात्रेषु श्रद्धयोप्त्वा महान्ति वै ।
वृजिनानि तरिष्यामो दानैर्नौभिरिवार्णवम् ॥३८॥
तेषु दानानि पात्रेषु
to them gifts worthy of
श्रद्धया-उप्त्वा महान्ति वै
reverentially will give, valuable indeed,
वृजिनानि तरिष्याम:
sins will overcome
दानै:-नौभि:-इव-अर्णवम्
by the gifts, by the boats like the ocean
We will indeed, with reverence, give them valuable gifts, and by the gifts will overcome our sins, like one crosses the ocean by a boat.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
एवं भगवताऽऽदिष्टा यादवा: कुलनन्दन ।
गन्तुं कृतधियस्तीर्थं स्यन्दनान् समयूयुजन् ॥३९॥
एवम् भगवता-आदिष्टा:
in this manner, by The Lord directed
यादवा: कुलनन्दन
the Yaadavaas, O of the race The Delight!
गन्तुम् कृत-धिय:-तीर्थम्
to go, making up the mind, to the sacred place,
स्यन्दनान् समयूयुजन्
chariots readied
O Delight of your race! In this manner, directed by The Lord Shree Krishna, the Yaadavaas made up there minds to proceed to the sacred place, and readied the chariots.
तन्निरीक्ष्योद्धवो राजन् श्रुत्वा भगवतोदितम् ।
दृष्ट्वारिष्टानि घोराणि नित्यं कृष्णमनुव्रत: ॥४०॥
तत्-निरीक्ष्य-उद्धव: राजन्
that observing, Uddhava, O King!
श्रुत्वा भगवता-उदितम्
hearing Lord's spoken (words)
दृष्ट्वा-अरिष्टानि घोराणि
seeing unpleasant forebodings grave,
नित्यम् कृष्णम्-अनुव्रत:
always Krishna's follower

विविक्त उपसङ्गम्य जगतामीश्वरेश्वरम् ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ प्राञ्जलिस्तमभाषत ॥४१॥
विविक्त उपसङ्गम्य
in seclusion, approached
जगताम्-ईश्वर-ईश्वरम्
of the universe lords', The Lord,
प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ
bowing with the head, on the feet
प्राञ्जलि:-तम्-अभाषत
joined palms to Him said,
In seclusion, he approached the Lord of the lords of the universe, bowed with the head at His feet, and joining palms, said to Him,…
उद्धव उवाच -
Uddhava said -
देवदेवेश योगेश पुण्यश्रवणकीर्तन ।
संहृत्यैतत् कुलं नूनं लोकं सन्त्यक्ष्यते भवान् ।
विप्रशापं समर्थोऽपि प्रत्यहन्न यदीश्वर: ॥४२॥
देव-देवेश योगेश
of the gods The God Ruler, of Yoga The Master,
पुण्य-श्रवण-कीर्तन
auspicious to hear of, talk about,
संहृत्य-एतत् कुलम् नूनम्
winding up this race, surely,
लोकम् सन्त्यक्ष्यते भवान्
the world abandoning are You,
विप्र-शापम् समर्थ:-अपि
Braahmana's curse, capable though
प्रत्यहन्-न यत्-ईश्वर:
counteract did not, in that, O Almighty
O The God Ruler of the gods, The Master of Yoga, auspicious to hear of, and talk about, if You are exterminating this race, and though capable, You are not counteracting the curse of the Braahmana, surely, You are going to abandon this world.
नाहं तवाङ्घ्रिकमलं क्षणार्धमपि केशव ।
त्यक्तुं समुत्सहे नाथ स्वधाम नय मामपि ॥४३॥
न-अहम् तव-अङ्घ्रि-कमलम्
not I, Your feet lotuses
क्षण-अर्धम्-अपि केशव
moment half also O Keshava!
त्यक्तुम् समुत्सहे नाथ
to leave desire, O Master!
स्व-धाम नय माम्-अपि
to (Your) own abode take me also
O Master! O Keshava! I cannot bear to be away from Your lotus feet, even for half a moment. Take me also to Your abode.
तव विक्रीडितं कृष्ण नृणां परममङ्गलम् ।
कर्णपीयूषमास्वाद्य त्यजत्यन्यस्पृहां जन: ॥४४॥
तव विक्रीडितम् कृष्ण
Your exploits O Krishna!
नृणाम् परम-मङ्गलम्
for the people highly auspicious,
कर्ण-पीयूषम्-आस्वाद्य
for the ears, the nectar, having tasted,
त्यजति-अन्य-स्पृहाम् जन:
gives up other (objects') hankering, man
O Krishna! Your exploits are highly auspicious for the people. Once they have tasted the nectar for the ears, that is, have heard Your stories, they give up the craving for other things.
शय्यासनाटनस्थानस्नानक्रीडाशनादिषु ।
कथं त्वां प्रियमात्मानं वयं भक्तास्त्यजेमहि ॥४५॥
शय्या-आसन-अटन-स्थान
(when) sleeping, sitting, walking, staying,
स्नान-क्रीडा-अशन-आदिषु
bathing, playing, eating, and others
कथम् त्वाम् प्रियम्-आत्मानम्
how, You, The Beloved of our own self's
वयम् भक्ता:-त्यजेमहि
we, the devotees can give up
How can we, the devotees, give You up, The Beloved of our own selves, Whose company we have enjoyed when sleeping, sitting, walking, staying in a place, bathing, playing, eating, and in other activities.
त्वयोपभुक्तस्रग्गन्धवासोऽलङ्कारचर्चिता: ।
उच्छिष्टभोजिनो दासस्तव मायां जयेमहि ॥४६॥
त्वया-उपभुक्त-स्रक्-गन्ध-
by You used garland, sandal paste,
वास:-अलङ्कार-चर्चिता:
clothes, ornaments adorned,
उच्छिष्ट-भोजिन:
left over food eaters,
दास:-तव मायाम् जयेमहि
servants, Your Maayaa will win over
We, Your servants who have adorned ourselves with the garlands, sandal-paste, clothes and ornaments used by You, and eaten the food left over by You, will win over Your Maayaa.
वातरशना य ऋषय: श्रमणा ऊर्ध्वमन्थिन: ।
ब्रह्माख्यं धाम ते यान्ति शान्ता: संन्यासिनोऽमला: ॥४७॥
वातरशना: ये ऋषय:
clothe-less, those sages,
श्रमणा ऊर्ध्व-मन्थिन:
by labour for uplifting the generative fluids
ब्रह्म-आख्यम् धाम ते यान्ति
Brahma named abode Your's will attain,
शान्ता: संन्यासिन:-अमला:
tranquil celibates, without impurities
Those sages who remain clothe-less, and toil to uplift their generative fluids, are perfect celibates, without impurities, and attain Your abode named Brahma.
वयं त्विह महायोगिन् भ्रमन्त: कर्मवर्त्मसु ।
त्वद्वार्तया तरिष्यामस्तावकैर्दुस्तरं तम: ॥४८॥
वयम् तु-इह महायोगिन्
we, indeed, here, O Great Yogi!
भ्रमन्त: कर्म-वर्त्मसु
wondering the Karma paths
त्वत्-वार्तया तरिष्याम:-
by Your tales will overcome
तावकै:-दुस्तरम् तम:
Your uncross able darkness (Maayaa)
O Great Yogi! Indeed, we, here, who are wondering on the path of Karma, will cross over the darkness of ignorance, Your Maayaa, which is difficult to overcome, by talks of Your tales.
स्मरन्त: कीर्तयन्तस्ते कृतानि गदितानि च ।
गत्युत्स्मितेक्षणक्ष्वेलि यन्नृलोकविडम्बनम् ॥४९॥
स्मरन्त: कीर्तयन्त:-ते
remembering, chanting,
कृतानि गदितानि च
the deeds and talks
गति-उत्-स्मिते-ईक्षण-क्ष्वेलि
gait, certainly, smile, glances, jokes
यत्-नृ-लोक-विडम्बनम्
which of human world is imitation
Remembering and chanting of the various deeds of Yours', Your gait, smile, glances, jokes and talks, which in reality are the imitation of the human world.
श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
उद्धवम् समभाषत
Uddhava said,…
एवं विज्ञापितो राजन् भगवान् देवकीसुत: ।
एकान्तिनं प्रियं भृत्यमुद्धवं समभाषत ॥५०॥
एवम् विज्ञापित: राजन्
thus entreated, O King!
भगवान् देवकी-सुत:
The Lord, Devaki's son,
एकान्तिनम् प्रियम् भृत्यम्-
to the absolute beloved servant
O King! When The Lord, Devaki's son, Shree Krishna, was thus entreated, He said to His absolute beloved devotee Uddhava,….
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां एकादश स्कन्धे षष्ठ: अध्याय: ॥६॥
Thus ends the sixth discourse, in Book Eleven of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
