श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
दृष्ट्वाऽऽत्मनि जये व्यग्रान् नृपान् हसति भूरियम् ।
अहो मा विजिगीषन्ति मृत्यो: क्रीडनका नृपा: ॥१॥
दृष्ट्वा-आत्मनि जये व्यग्रान्
seeing herself to win eager
नृपान् हसति भू:-इयम्
the kings, laughs well earth this,
अहो मा विजिगीषन्ति
'O me to win eager
मृत्यो: क्रीडनका नृपा:
of Death are play things the kings
The earth seeing the kings eager to win her, laughs and says, 'Alas! The kings eager to win me, are just play things in the hands of Death.'
काम एष नरेन्द्राणां मोघ: स्याद् विदुषामपि ।
येन फेनोपमे पिण्डे येऽतिविश्रम्भिता नृपा: ॥२॥
काम: एष: नरेन्द्राणाम्
desire this of the kings
मोघ: स्याद् विदुषाम्-अपि
baseless proves to be, of the wise also,
येन फेन-उपमे पिण्डे
by which froth like body
ये-अति-विश्रम्भिता: नृपा:
who very much depend the kings
This ambition of even the wise kings, proves to be baseless, who very much depend on this human body which is like froth and bubbles.
पूर्वं निर्जित्य षड्वर्गं जेष्यामो राजमन्त्रिण: ।
तत: सचिवपौराप्तकरीन्द्रानस्य कण्टकान् ॥३॥
पूर्वम् निर्जित्य षड्-वर्गम्
first, winning over the six enemies,
जेष्याम: राज-मन्त्रिण:
will win the king's ministers,
तत: सचिव-पौर-आप्त
then the councillors, of the city the dwellers,
करीन्द्रान्-अस्य कण्टकान्
the elephants his the thorn like
First we will win over the six enemies, then, we will win over the kings, ministers and councillors and the city dwellers, the elephants and armies, which are thorn like.
एवं क्रमेण जेष्याम: पृथ्वीं सागरमेखलाम् ।
इत्याशाबद्धहृदया न पश्यन्त्यन्तिकेऽन्तकम् ॥४॥
एवम् क्रमेण जेष्याम:
thus gradually will win
पृथ्वीम् सागर-मेखलाम्
the earth with the ocean the girdle,
इति-आशा-बद्ध-हृदया:
with this hope bound hearts,
न पश्यन्ति-अन्तिके-अन्तकम्
do not see, close by, the end
Thus, gradually we will win the earth with the ocean as its girdle. So, with their hearts bound in hope, they do not see, the end, death, near by.
समुद्रावरणां जित्वा मां विशन्त्यब्धिमोजसा ।
कियदात्मजयस्यैतन्मुक्तिरात्मजये फलम् ॥५॥
समुद्र-आवरणाम् जित्वा माम्
ocean covered (land) winning me,
विशन्ति-अब्धिम्-ओजसा
enter the ocean by valour,
कियत्-आत्म-जयस्य-एतत्-
how little for the self control this,
मुक्ति:-आत्म-जये फलम्
liberation is for self conquering, the fruit
Covered by the ocean, the land, me, winning over, with valour, they then enter the ocean to win the other continents. How little it is for having conquered the mind and the senses, whereas, the fruit of self conquering is liberation.
यां विसृज्यैव मनवस्तत्सुताश्च कुरूद्वह ।
गता यथागतं युद्धे तां मां जेष्यन्त्यबुद्धय: ॥६॥
याम् विसृज्य-एव मनव:-
whom (me) giving up, the Manus,
तत्-सुता:-च कुरूद्वह
his sons and, O Scion of the Kurus!
गता: यथा-आगतम् युद्धे
have gone, as they came, in the battle,
ताम् माम् जेष्यन्ति-अबुद्धय:
that me will conquer the stupid ones
O Scion of the Kurus! The Manus and his son having conquered me, gave me up and went away as they had come, that me, the stupid ones will conquer in battle..
मत्कृते पितृपुत्राणां भ्रातृणां चापि विग्रह: ।
जायते ह्यसतां राज्ये ममताबद्धचेतसाम् ॥७॥
मत्-कृते-पितृ-पुत्राणाम्
for my sake of father sons
भ्रातृणाम् च-अपि विग्रह:
brothers and also discord
जायते हि-असताम् राज्ये
arises, indeed of the evil, for kingdom
ममता-बद्ध-चेतसाम्
possession inclined minds
For my sake, discord arises among the evil father and sons and also brothers, with their minds bound by the desire of possessing me.
ममैवेयं मही कृत्स्ना न ते मूढेति वादिन: ।
स्पर्धमाना मिथो ध्नन्ति म्रियन्ते मत्कृते नृपा: ॥८॥
मम-एव-इयम् मही कृत्स्ना
my alone this earth whole,
न ते मूढ-इति वादिन:
not yours the stupid, so saying,
स्पर्धमाना मिथ: ध्नन्ति
contesting, mutually, kill
म्रियन्ते मत्-कृते नृपा:
die, for my sake the kings
'This whole earth belongs to me and not to you', so saying, the stupid kings contesting mutually, kill and die for my sake.
पृथु: पुरूरवा गाधिर्नहुषो भरतोऽर्जुन: ।
मान्धाता सगरो राम: खट्वाङ्गो धुन्धुहा रघु: ॥९॥

अन्ये च बहवो दैत्या राजानो ये महेश्वरा: ।
सर्वे सर्वविद: शूरा: सर्वे सर्वजितोऽजिता: ॥१२॥
अन्ये च बहव: दैत्या:
others and many demons,
राजान: ये महेश्वरा:
kings, those suzerain rulers,
सर्वे सर्व-विद: शूरा:
all, all knowers, valorous,
सर्वे सर्व-जित:-अजिता:
all, all conquerors, invincible,…
These, and the other demons and kings, and all those suzerain rulers, who had the knowledge of everything, were brave, had conquered all, and were invincible,….
ममतां मय्यवर्तन्त कृत्वोच्चैर्मर्त्यधर्मिण: ।
कथावशेषा: कालेन ह्यकृतार्था: कृता विभो ॥१३॥
ममताम् मयि-अवर्तन्त
possessiveness in me placing,
कृत्वा-उच्चै:-मर्त्य-धर्मिण:
living exalted, mortal by nature,
कथा-अवशेषा: कालेन
stories merely remaining, by Time,
हि-अकृत-अर्था: कृता विभो
indeed, unfulfilled objects, rendered, O Mighty One!
O Mighty One! They had placed possessiveness in me, and led exalted lives, and mortal by nature, were rendered to mere stories, by Time, having not fulfilled their objectives.
कथा इमास्ते कथिता महीयसां विताय लोकेषु यश: परेयुषाम् ।
विज्ञानवैराग्यविवक्षया विभो वचोविभूतीर्न तु पारमार्थ्यम् ॥१४॥
कथा इमा:-ते कथिता
stories, these, to you, are told,
महीयसाम् विताय लोकेषु
of the great, spread in worlds,
यश: परेयुषाम्
fame , of who have passed,
विज्ञान-वैराग्य-विवक्षया
for the knowledge and dispassion to teach
विभो वचो-विभूती:
O lord! Of speech is decoration,
न तु पारम्-आर्थ्यम्
not indeed of the highest truth
O lord! These stories which have been narrated to you, of the great souls, who have passed away, and whose fame had spread all over the worlds, is for the purpose of telling you of the knowledge of the unsubstantial world and for imbibing dispassion in you. Yet, all this is merely a decoration of speech and does not explain the highest truth.
यस्तूत्तमश्लोकगुणानुवाद: संगीयतेऽभीक्ष्णममङ्गलघ्न: ।
तमेव नित्यं शृणुयादभीक्ष्णं कृष्णेऽमलां भक्तिमभीप्समान: ॥१५॥
य:-तु-उत्तम-श्लोक-
who ever, indeed of highly Renowned's
गुण-अनुवाद: संगीयते-
virtues extols, sings of,
अभीक्ष्णम्-अमङ्गल-घ्न:
constantly, evils destroyer
तम्-एव नित्यम् शृणुयात्-
Him alone daily may listen to,
अभीक्ष्णम् कृष्णे-अमलाम्
always in Krishna pure
भक्तिम्-अभीप्समान:
devotion desiring
Who ever always desires to attain pure devotion in Krishna, may indeed constantly listen to and sing of, the excellent virtues of the highly renowned, which are the destroyers of evil.
राजा-उवाच -
The King said -
केनोपायेन भगवन् कलेर्दोषान् कलौ जना: ।
विधमिष्यन्त्युपचितांस्तन्मे ब्रूहि यथा मुने ॥१६॥
केन-उपायेन भगवन्
by what method, O Lord!
कले:-दोषान् कलौ जना:
of Kali the evils, in Kali the people,
विधमिष्यन्ति-उपचितान्-
will destroy, the increasing,
तत्-मे ब्रूहि यथा मुने
that to me do say, how, O Sage!
O Divine sage! Do tell me, how, and by what method, the people in Kaliyuga, will destroy the increasing evils of Kaliyuga.
युगानि युगधर्मांश्च मानं प्रलयकल्पयो: ।
कालस्येश्वररूपस्य गतिं विष्णोर्महात्मन: ॥१७॥
युगानि युग-धर्मान्-च
of the yugas, of the yugas' characteristics,
मानम् प्रलय-कल्पयो:
duration of dissolution and creation
कालस्य-ईश्वर-रूपस्य
of Time, of The Lord, a form,
गतिम् विष्णो:-महात्मन:
potency of Vishnu, the great soul
Also tell me about the yugas, of their characteristics, of the duration of dissolution and creation, of Time, a form of The Lord, and of the potencies of Lord Vishnu, The Great Soul.
श्री शुक-उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
कृते प्रवर्तते धर्मश्चतुष्पात्तज्जनैर्धृत: ।
सत्यं दया तपो दानमिति पादा विभोर्नृप ॥१८॥
कृते प्रवर्तते धर्म:-
in Satyuga, is founded righteousness
चतु:-पाद्-तत्-जनै:-धृत:
on four legs, which are by people held,
सत्यम् दया तप: दानम्-
truth, compassion, asceticism, charity,
इति पादा: विभो:-नृप
thus the legs, (of integral virtue), O Ruler of men!
O Ruler of men! In Satyuga, the course of integral righteousness is founded on four legs, which are held in tact, by the people, which are truth, compassion, asceticism and charity.
सन्तुष्टा: करुणा मैत्रा: शान्ता दान्तास्तितिक्षव: ।
आत्मारामा: समदृश: प्रायश: श्रमणा जना: ॥१९॥
सन्तुष्टा: करुणा: मैत्रा:
contented, compassionate, friendly,
शान्ता: दान्ता:-तितिक्षव:
peaceful, self-controlled, forbearing,
आत्मारामा: समदृश:
revel in the self, look upon with equal eye,
प्रायश: श्रमणा जना:
generally, involved in practice, the people
Generally, the people are contented, compassionate, friendly, peaceful, self-controlled, forbearing, revel in the self, look upon with equal eye, and are involved in the practice of Self-realization.
त्रेतायां धर्मपादानां तुर्यांशो हीयते शनै: ।
अधर्मपादैरनृतहिंसासन्तोषविग्रहै: ॥२०॥
त्रेतायाम् धर्म-पादानाम्-
in Tretaa, of the righteousness legs,
तुर्य-अंश: हीयते शनै:
fourth part wasted gradually,
अधर्म-पादै:-अनृत-हिंसा-
by falsehood legs, falsehood, violence,
असन्तोष-विग्रहै:
discontent, discord
In Tretaa yuga, a fourth part of the four legs of righteousness are wasted gradually, by the legs of falsehood, violence, discontent and discord.
तदा क्रियातपोनिष्ठा नातिहिंस्रा न लम्पटा: ।
त्रैवर्गिकास्त्रयीवृद्धा वर्णा ब्रह्मोत्तरा नृप ॥२१॥
तदा क्रिया-तप:-निष्ठा
then, rituals and austerities believe in
न-अति-हिंस्रा: न लम्पटा:
not very violent, not deceitful,
त्रैवर्गिका:-त्रयी-वृद्धा
the three objectives pursue, in Vedas are apt
वर्णा: ब्रह्म-उत्तरा: नृप
in the Varnas, Braahmanas are superior, O King!
O King! During the time of Tretaa yuga, people believe in rituals and austerities, are apt in Vedic rituals, and pursue the three objectives of life. Braahmanas are the superior ones among the Varnas.
तप: सत्यदयादानेष्वर्धं ह्रसति द्वापरे ।
हिंसातुष्ट्यनृतद्वेषैर्धर्मस्याधर्मलक्षणै: ॥२२॥
तप: सत्य-दया-दानेषु-
of austerities, Truth, compassion, charity,
अर्धम् ह्रसति द्वापरे
one half is destroyed in Dwaapara,
हिंसा-अतुष्टि-अनृत-द्वेषै:-
by violence, discontent, falsehood, discord,
धर्मस्य-अधर्म-लक्षणै:
of righteousness, of non-virtue, the signs
In Dwaapara, the four signs of righteousness, austerities, Truth, compassion, charity, are reduced to half, hit by the non virtues, violence, discontent, falsehood, discord.
यशस्विनो महाशाला: स्वाध्यायाध्ययने रता: ।
आढ्या: कुटुम्बिनो हृष्टा वर्णा: क्षत्रद्विजोत्तरा: ॥२३॥
यशस्विन: महा-शाला:
given to glory, and great sacrifices,
स्वाध्याय-अध्ययने रता:
self-study and learning engaged in,
आढ्या: कुटुम्बिन: हृष्टा:
well-to-do, family people, strong,
वर्णा: क्षत्र-द्विज-उत्तरा:
of Varnas', Kshatriyas, Braahmanas, the best
The people are given to glory and great sacrifices, are engaged in self-study and learning, are well-to-do, are family people, and the Braahmanas and Kshatriyas are most honoured among the Varnas.
कलौ तु धर्महेतूनां तूर्यांशोऽधर्महेतुभि: ।
एधमानै: क्षीयमाणो ह्यन्ते सोऽपि विनङ्क्ष्यति ॥२४॥
कलौ तु धर्म-हेतूनाम्
in Kali, indeed, of the Righteousness the causes,
तूर्य-अंश:-अधर्म-हेतुभि:
four parts of virtue-less-ness the causes
एधमानै: क्षीयमाण:
having increased, being destroyed,
हि-अन्ते स:-अपि विनङ्क्ष्यति
indeed, in the end, that also is destroyed
In Kaliyuga, because of the increase in the virtue-less-ness, four parts of the cause of righteousness are destroyed, and indeed, in the end that also is destroyed.
तस्मिँल्लुब्धा दुराचारा निर्दया: शुष्कवैरिण: ।
दुर्भगा भूरितर्षाश्च शूद्रदाशोत्तरा: प्रजा: ॥२५॥
तस्मिन्-लुब्धा: दुराचारा:
in that, (time) greedy, immoral,
निर्दया: शुष्क-वैरिण:
merciless, need-lessly hostile,
दुर्भगा: भूरि-तर्षा:-च
unfortunate, with great covetedness,
शूद्र-दाश-उत्तरा: प्रजा:
Shudras, fisherman the leading people
In that time of Kaliyuga, the people will be greedy, immoral, merciless, need-lessly hostile, unfortunate, with great covetedness, and the Shudras and people of the class of fishermen will lead.
सत्वं रजस्तम इति दृश्यन्ते पुरुषे गुणा: ।
कालसञ्चोदितास्ते वै परिवर्तन्त आत्मनि ॥२६॥
सत्वम् रज:-तम: इति
Sattva, Rajas and Tamas these,
दृश्यन्ते पुरुषे गुणा:
are seen in men the Gunas,
काल-सञ्चोदिता:-ते वै
by Time prompted they, indeed,
परिवर्तन्त आत्मनि
keep changing in the self
The three Gunas, Sattva, Rajas and Tamas are seen in the men. Prompted by time, they keep changing in the self.
प्रभवन्ति यदा सत्त्वे मनोबुद्धीन्द्रियाणि च ।
तदा कृतयुगं विद्याज्ज्ञाने तपसि यद् रुचि: ॥२७॥
प्रभवन्ति यदा सत्त्वे
established when in Sattva,
मन:-बुद्धि-इन्द्रियाणि च
the mind, intellect and senses
तदा कृत-युगम् विद्यात्-
then, Krita yuga, know,
ज्ञाने तपसि यत् रुचि:
in knowledge, austerities, in that, interest
When the mind intellect and senses of people are established in Sattva, and they are interested in knowledge, austerities, then know that to be Krita yuga.
यदा धर्मार्थकामेषु भक्तिर्भवति देहिनाम् ।
तदा त्रेता रजोवृत्तिरिति जानीहि बुद्धिमन् ॥२८॥
यदा धर्म-अर्थ-कामेषु
when in righteousness, wealth, and pleasure
भक्ति:-भवति देहिनाम्
inclination is present, in the embodied
तदा त्रेता रजो:-वृत्ति-
then, Treta, of Rajas active,
इति जानीहि बुद्धिमन्
this, know, O Intelligent One!
O Intelligent One! When in the embodied beings, there is an inclination towards righteousness, wealth, and pleasure, then know it to be Tretaa yuga.
यदा लोभस्त्वसन्तोषो मानो दम्भोऽथ मत्सर: ।
कर्मणां चापि काम्यानां द्वापरं तद् रजस्तम: ॥२९॥
यदा लोभ:-तु-असन्तोष:
when, greed, and non-contentment,
मान: दम्भ:-अथ मत्सर:
pride, hypocrisy, then jealousy
कर्मणाम् च-अपि काम्यानाम्
of deeds, and also desired,
द्वापरम् तत् रज:-तम:
Dwaapara, that, of Rajas Tamas
When there is prominence of greed, discontent, pride, hypocrisy, jealousy, and the doing only desired actions, that is Dwaapara, with Rajas and Tamas prevailing.
यदा मायानृतं तन्द्रा निद्रा हिंसा विषादनम् ।
शोको मोहो भयं दैन्यं स कलिस्तामस: स्मृत: ॥३०॥
यदा माया-अनृतम् तन्द्रा
when, duplicity, falsehood, drowsiness,
निद्रा हिंसा विषादनम्
excessive sleep, violence, grief
शोक: मोह: भयम् दैन्यम्
lamenting, infatuation, fear, helplessness,
स: कलि:-तामस: स्मृत:
that Kali, of Tamas is known
When, there is duplicity, falsehood, drowsiness, excessive sleep, violence, grief, lamenting, infatuation, fear, helplessness, that is known to be Kaliyuga, with Tamas prevailing.
यस्मात् क्षुद्रदृशो मर्त्या: क्षुद्रभाग्या महाशना: ।
कामिनो वित्तहीनाश्च स्वैरिण्यश्च स्त्रियोऽसती: ॥३१॥
यस्मात् क्षुद्र-दृश: मर्त्या:
because of which, short sighted are mortals,
क्षुद्र-भाग्या: महा-अशना:
with little luck, much eaters,
कामिन: वित्त-हीना:-च
desiring, wealth-less, and
स्वैरिण्य:-च स्त्रिय:-असती:
free willed, and women unchaste
Because of Kaliyuga, the mortals are short sighted, with little luck, great eaters, always desiring, wealth-less, and the women also are free willed, and unchaste.
दस्यूत्कृष्टा जनपदा वेदा: पाखण्डदूषिता: ।
राजानश्च प्रजाभक्षा: शिश्नोदरपरा द्विजा: ॥३२॥
दस्यु-उत्कृष्टा: जन-पदा:
robbers abound in the cities,
वेदा: पाखण्ड-दूषिता:
Vedas are by heretics rendered impure,
राजान:-च प्रजा-भक्षा:
the kings and are public exploiters,
शिश्नोदर-परा द्विजा:
sexual urge and hunger satisfiers are Braahmanas
In the cities robbers abound. Vedas are rendered impure by heretics. The kings are exploiters of the public. The Braahmanas are busy satisfying their sexual and hunger urges.
अव्रता वटवोऽशौचा भिक्षवश्च कुटुम्बिन: ।
तपस्विनो ग्रामवासा न्यासिनोऽत्यर्थलोलुपा: ॥३३॥
अव्रता: वटव:-अशौचा:
non-keepers of vows, students, impure,
भिक्षव:-च कुटुम्बिन:
beggars and householders,
तपस्विन: ग्राम-वासा
ascetics in villages will live,
न्यासिन:-अति-अर्थ-लोलुपा:
recluses will be very wealth greedy
The students will be non-followers of given rules and regulations. The householders will become beggars, ascetics will live in villages, and recluses will lust for wealth.
ह्रस्वकाया महाहारा भूर्यपत्या गतह्रिय: ।
शश्वत्कटुकभाषिण्यश्चौर्यमायोरुसाहसा: ॥३४॥
ह्रस्व-काया: महा-आहारा:
small bodied, voracious,
भूरि-अपत्या: गत-ह्रिय:
having many children, without shame,
शश्वत्-कटुक-भाषिण्य:
always harsh spoken
शौर्य-माया-उरु-साहसा:
courageous, given to wiles and dare devils
The women will have small bodies and will be voracious, having many children and shameless, always harsh spoken, courageous, given to wiles and dare devils.
पणयिष्यन्ति वै क्षुद्रा: किराटा: कूटकारिण: ।
अनापद्यपि मंस्यन्ते वार्तां साधूजुगुप्सिताम् ॥३५॥
पणयिष्यन्ति वै क्षुद्रा:
will trade, indeed, low minded
किराटा: कूट-कारिण:
of low casts, fraud transactions
अनापदि-अपि मंस्यन्ते
not in distress, also, will consider
वार्ताम् साधू-जुगुप्सिताम्
pursuits by the noble condemned
The low casts and low minded will carry on trading with transactions of fraud. Though not in distress, people will consider pursuits to be favourable which are looked down upon by the noble.
पतिं त्यक्ष्यन्ति निर्द्रव्यं भृत्या अप्यखिलोत्तमम् ।
भृत्यं विपन्नं पतय: कौलं गाश्चापयस्विनी: ॥३६॥
पतिम् त्यक्ष्यन्ति निर्द्रव्यम्
masters will leave the money less
भृत्या: अपि-अखिल-उत्तमम्
the servants, even if most superior
भृत्यम् विपन्नम् पतय:
the servants in trouble, the masters
कौलम् गा:-च-अपयस्विनी:
the hereditary, cow and without milk
Servants will leave their masters when they are without money, even if they are the best. The masters will leave the servants if they are in trouble, even if they are hereditary, and the cows which do not yield milk.
पितृभ्रातृसुहृज्ज्ञातीन् हित्वा सौरतसौहृदा: ।
ननान्दृश्यालसंवादा दीना: स्त्रैणा: कलौ नरा: ॥३७॥
पितृ-भ्रातृ-सुह्त्-ज्ञातीन्
father, brother, friends, kinsmen,
हित्वा सौरत-सौहृदा:
neglecting, for sexual satisfaction making friends,
ननान्दृ-श्याल-संवादा:
sister-in-laws, brother in-laws consulting,
दीना: स्त्रैणा: कलौ नरा:
miserable, womanizers, of Kaliyuga the men
In Kaliyuga the men will be miserable, womanizers, for sexual satisfaction will make friends, will consult sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, and will neglect their father, brother, friend and family people.
शूद्रा: प्रतिग्रहीष्यन्ति तपोवेषोपजीविन: ।
धर्मं वक्ष्यन्त्यधर्मज्ञा अधिरुह्योत्तमासनम् ॥३८॥
शूद्रा: प्रतिग्रहीष्यन्ति
Shudras will accept gifts
तप:-वेष-उपजीविन:
hermits posing as, making a living
धर्मम् वक्ष्यन्ति-अधर्मज्ञा
righteousness will preach non-knowers of virtues
अधिरुह्य-उत्तम-आसनम्
ascending the exalted seats
Shudras will accept charitable gifts, and will make a living posing as hermits. Those who do not have the knowledge of righteousness, will preach righteousness, seated on exalted seats.
नित्यमुद्विग्नमनसो दुर्भिक्षकरकर्शिता: ।
निरन्ने भूतले राजन्ननावृष्टिभयातुरा: ॥३९॥
नित्यम्-उद्विग्न-मनस:
always worried minded,
दुर्भिक्ष-कर-कर्शिता:
by famine and taxes oppressed,
निरन्ने भूतले राजन्-
devoid of grain on the earth surface, O King!
अनावृष्टि-भय-आतुरा:
by draught fear stressed
O King! The people will always be worried in the mind, and will be oppressed by famine and taxes. The surface of the earth being devoid of food grain, they will be stressed with the fear of draught.
वासोऽन्नपानशयनव्यवायस्नानभूषणै: ।
हीना: पिशाचसन्दर्शा भविष्यन्ति कलौ प्रजा: ॥४०॥
वास:-अन्न-पान-शयन-
clothes, food, drinks, bed,
व्यवाय-स्नान-भूषणै:
sexual enjoyment, bath, ornaments,
हीना: पिशाच-सन्दर्शा:
without, fiend like
भविष्यन्ति कलौ प्रजा:
will be in Kaliyuga the people
In Kaliyuga, the people will be wanting in clothes, food, drinks, bed, sexual enjoyment, and ornaments, will almost be like fiends.
कलौ काकिणिकेऽप्यर्थे विगृह्य त्यक्तसौहृदा: ।
त्यक्ष्यन्ति च प्रियान् प्राणान् हनिष्यन्ति स्वकानपि ॥४१॥
कलौ-काकिणिके-अपि-अर्थे
in Kali, for pennies even sake
विगृह्य त्यक्त-सौहृदा:
quarrelling, giving up good will,
त्यक्ष्यन्ति च प्रियान् प्राणान्
will abandon dear ones, and life
हनिष्यन्ति स्वकान्-अपि
killing will take own even
In Kaliyuga, for the sake of even pennies, people will take up quarrel, will give up all good will, abandon the dear ones, even kill them, and take their own lives also.
न रक्षिष्यन्ति मनुजा: स्थविरौ पितरावपि ।
पुत्रान् सर्वार्थकुशलान् क्षुद्रा: शिश्नोदरम्भरा: ॥४२॥
न रक्षिष्यन्ति मनुजा:
will not maintain people,
स्थविरौ पितरौ-अपि
aged parents even
पुत्रान् सर्व-अर्थ-कुशलान्
sons in all matters clever
क्षुद्रा: शिश्नोदरम्-भरा:
petty sexual and hunger urge satisfying
People will not even maintain their aged parents, nor their sons even if they are clever by all means. They will merely satisfy their sexual and hunger needs.
कलौ न राजञ्जगतां परं गुरुं त्रिलोकनाथानतपादपङ्कजम् ।
प्रायेण मर्त्या भगवन्तमच्युतं यक्ष्यन्ति पाखण्डविभिन्नचेतस: ॥४३॥
कलौ न राजन्-
in Kaliyuga, do not, O King!
जगताम् परम् गुरुम् त्रिलोक-नाथ-
worlds' supreme preceptor, three world's Master
आनत-पाद-पङ्कजम्
bowed at the feet lotus
प्रायेण मर्त्या
generally mortals
भगवन्तम्-अच्युतम् यक्ष्यन्ति
The Lord Invincible worship,
पाखण्ड-विभिन्न-चेतस:
by heretics perverted minded
O King! In Kaliyuga, generally the people, with their minds perverted by heretics, do not worship, bowing at the lotus feet, of The Supreme preceptor, The Master of the three worlds, The Invincible Lord.
यन्नामधेयं म्रियमाण आतुर: पतन् स्खलन् वा विवशो गृणन् पुमान् ।
विमुक्तकर्मार्गल उत्तमां गतिं प्राप्नोति यक्ष्यन्ति न तं कलौ जना: ॥४४॥
यत्-नामधेयम् म्रियमाण आतुर:
Whose name, when dying, afflicted,
पतन् स्खलन् वा
falling, stumbling, or
विवश: गृणन् पुमान्
helplessly uttering, a person
विमुक्त-कर्म-अर्गल
freed of Karma's chains
उत्तमाम् गतिम् प्राप्नोति
the supreme state attains
यक्ष्यन्ति न तम् कलौ जना:
worship not Him in Kaliyuga, the people
He, Whose name, when a person utters, when dying, afflicted, falling, stumbling, helplessly, is freed from the chain of Karmas, Him, the people in Kaliyuga do not worship.
पुंसां कलिकृतान् दोषान् द्रव्यदेशात्मसम्भवान् ।
सर्वान् हरति चित्तस्थो भगवान् पुरुषोत्तम: ॥४५॥
पुंसाम् कलि-कृतान् दोषान्
of the people, by Kali caused evils
द्रव्य-देश-आत्म-सम्भवान्
from things, place or mind arising,
सर्वान् हरति चित्त-स्थ:
all steals away in the mind enthroned
भगवान् पुरुषोत्तम:
The Lord, The Person Supreme
The Lord, The Person Supreme, enthroned in the minds of the people, steals away all the evils caused by Kali, arising from matter, place or mind.
श्रुत: सङ्कीर्तितो ध्यात: पूजितश्चादृतोऽपि वा ।
नृणां धुनोति भगवान् हृत्स्थो जन्मायुताशुभम् ॥४६॥
श्रुत: सङ्कीर्तित: ध्यात:
heard of, glorified, meditated upon,
पूजित:-च-आदृत:-अपि वा
worshipped and honoured even or,
नृणाम् धुनोति भगवान्
of the people beats away, The Lord
हृद्-स्थ: जन्म-अयुत-अशुभम्
in the heart present, births ten thousand sins
The Lord, present in the hearts of people by whom He is heard of, glorified, meditated upon, worshipped and or even honoured, beats away all their sins committed in thousands of their births.
यथा हेम्नि स्थितो वह्निर्दुर्वर्णं हन्ति धातुजम् ।
एवमात्मगतो विष्णुर्योगिनामशुभाशयम् ॥४७॥
यथा हेम्नि स्थित: वह्नि:-
as, in gold, dwelling, fire,
दुर्वर्णम् हन्ति धातुजम्
impurities, destroys of metals caused,
एवम्-आत्म-गत: विष्णु:-
so, in the minds present Lord Vishnu
योगिनाम्-अशुभ-आशयम्
of the yogis the evil Karmas
Just as the fire applied to gold destroys its blemishes caused by other metals, so also, Lord Vishnu dwelling the hearts of the Yogis, the strivers, wipes away the seeds of their evil Karmas.
विद्यातप:प्राणनिरोधमैत्रीतीर्थाभिषेकव्रतदानजप्यै: ।
नात्यन्तशुद्धिं लभतेऽन्तरात्मा यथा हृदिस्थे भगवत्यनन्ते ॥४८॥
विद्या-तप:-प्राण-निरोध-
by learning, asceticism, breath control,
मैत्री-तीर्थ-अभिषेक-
friendliness, pilgrimage bathing,
व्रत-दान-जप्यै:
austerities, charity, chanting,
न-अत्यन्त-शुद्धिम् लभते-
do not very much purity bring,
अन्तरात्मा यथा
to the internal mind, as
हृदि-स्थे भगवति-अनन्ते
in the mind enthroned The Lord Infinite
Learning, asceticism, breath control, friendliness, pilgrimage bathing, austerities, charity, chanting, do not such purity bring to the mind, as when The Lord Infinite is enthroned in the heart.
तस्मात् सर्वात्मना राजन् हृदिस्थं कुरु केशवम् ।
म्रियमाणो ह्यवहितस्ततो यासि परां गतिम् ॥४९॥
तस्मात् सर्वात्मना राजन्
therefore, with all your heart, O King!
हृदि-स्थम् कुरु केशवम्
in the heart install Lord Keshava,
म्रियमाण: हि-अवहित:-
about to die, indeed, with concentration,
तत: यासि पराम् गतिम्
then will attain the supreme goal
O King! Therefore, with all your being install Lord Keshava in your heart, indeed, with concentration, as you are about to die. Then, indeed, you will attain the supreme state.
म्रियमाणैरभिध्येयो भगवान् परमेश्वर: ।
आत्मभावं नयत्यङ्ग सर्वात्मा सर्वसंश्रय: ॥५०॥
म्रियमाणै:-अभिध्येय:
by those about to die, should be meditated upon
भगवान् परमेश्वर:
The Lord, The Supreme Ruler,
आत्म-भावम् नयति-अङ्ग
to Self form will take, O Dear Pareekshit!
सर्व-आत्मा सर्व-संश्रय:
of all The Soul, of all The Shelter
O Dear Pareekshit! The Lord, The Supreme Ruler, should be meditated upon by those about to die. He, The Soul of all, The Shelter of all, will take them to His own form.
कलेर्दोषनिधे राजन्नस्ति ह्येको महान् गुण: ।
कीर्तनादेव कृष्णस्य मुक्तसङ्ग: परं व्रजेत् ॥५१॥
कले:-दोष-निधे: राजन्-
of Kali, of evils the store, O King!
अस्ति हि-एक: महान् गुण:
is one only great quality
कीर्तनात्-एव कृष्णस्य
by chanting only Krishna's (names)
मुक्त-सङ्ग: परम् व्रजेत्
freed of association, the Supreme achieves
O King! Kaliyuga, the store of evils has only one great quality. A person chanting the names and glories of Shri Krishna is freed from all associations, and achieves The Supreme state.
कृते यद् ध्यायतो विष्णुं त्रेतायां यजतो मखै: ।
द्वापरे परिचर्यायां कलौ तत्-हरिकीर्तनात् ॥५२॥
कृते यत् ध्यायत: विष्णुम्
in Krita, that (which), by contemplating on Vishnu,
त्रेतायाम् यजत: मखै:
in Tretaa, by performing sacrifices,
द्वापरे परिचर्यायाम्
in Dwaapara, by worshipping, (is achieved)
कलौ तत्-हरि-कीर्तनात्
in Kali, that (is achieved) by Hari's chantings
That which is achieved in Kritayuga by contemplating on Lord Vishnu, in Tretaa yuga by performing sacrifices, in Dwaapara by worshipping, is achieved in Kaliyuga by chanting Lord Hari's names and glories.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां द्वादशस्कन्धे तृतीय: अध्याय: ॥३॥
Thus ends the third discourse in Book Twelve of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
