श्री शुक उवाच -
Shree Shuka said -
ततश्चानुदिनं धर्म: सत्यं शौचं क्षमा दया ।
कालेन बलिना राजन् नङ्क्ष्यत्यायुर्बलं स्मृति: ॥१॥
तत:-च-अनुदिनम् धर्म:
then, and, day by day, righteousness,
सत्यम् शौचम् क्षमा दया
truth, purity, forgiveness, compassion,
कालेन बलिना राजन्
by Time the mighty, O King!
नङ्क्ष्यति-आयु:-बलम् स्मृति:
will decline age, strength, memory
O King! Then, day by day, by the lack of righteousness, truth, purity, forgiveness, compassion, and Time the mighty, there will be decline in age, strength and memory.
वित्तमेव कलौ नृणां जन्माचारगुणोदय: ।
धर्मन्यायव्यवस्थायां कारणं बलमेव हि ॥२॥
वित्तम्-एव कलौ नृणाम्
wealth alone in Kali for the people
जन्म-आचार-गुण-उदय:
of pedigree, morality, merit the measure
धर्म-न्याय-व्यवस्थायाम्
of righteousness, and fairness, establishment
कारणम् बलम्-एव हि
determining mighty only indeed (will be)
In Kaliyuga, only wealth will be the measure of pedigree, morality and merit. And might alone will be the determining factor for the establishment of righteousness and fairness.
दाम्पत्येऽभिरुचिर्हेतुर्मायैव व्यावहारिके ।
स्त्रीत्वे पुंस्त्वे च हि रतिर्विप्रत्वे सूत्रमेव हि ॥३॥
दाम्पत्ये-अभिरुचि:-हेतु:-
in marrying, liking (will be) the criteria
माया-एव व्यावहारिके
wealth alone in business dealings,
स्त्रीत्वे पुंस्त्वे च हि रति:-
in masculinity and felinity indeed sexuality
विप्रत्वे सूत्रम्-एव हि
in being a Braahmana, thread alone indeed
In getting married, personal liking will be the criteria of choice, in business dealings wealth alone will be the factor of consideration, sexuality alone will be appreciated in masculinity and felinity, and the sacred thread alone will be the mark of a Braahmana.
लिङ्गमेवाश्रमख्यातावन्योन्यापत्तिकारणम् ।
अवृत्या न्यायदौर्बल्यं पाण्डित्ये चापलं वच: ॥४॥
लिङ्गम्-एव-आश्रम-ख्यातौ-
symbols only of Aashramas the deciding factors
अन्य:-अन्य-आपत्ति-कारणम्
each others' objection will be the cause
अवृत्या न्याय-दौर्बल्यम्
by not spending, justice will be weak
पाण्डित्ये चापलम् वच:
in being scholarly clever talk will be
The outer symbols will decide to which Aashrama a person belongs. There will be reasons for the objections in each others symbols. Justice will be loose, for not spending on getting it. And scholarliness will be in clever talks.
अनाढ्यतैवासाधुत्वे साधुत्वे दम्भ एव तु ।
स्वीकार एव चोद्वाहे स्नानमेव प्रसाधनम् ॥५॥
अनाढ्यता-एव-असाधुत्वे
wealthlessness alone impiousness
साधुत्वे दम्भ एव तु
in being pious will be hypocrisy
स्वीकार एव च-उद्वाहे
consent only and in marrying
स्नानम्-एव प्रसाधनम्
as bathing will be considered make up
Want of wealth will alone be impiousness, and piousness will be considered as hypocrisy. Mutual consent will be the ground for marriage, and make up and adornment will be considered as bathing.
दूरे वार्ययनं तीर्थं लावण्यं केशधारणम् ।
उदरम्भरता स्वार्थ: सत्यत्वे धार्ष्ट्यमेव हि ॥६॥
दूरे वारि-अयनम् तीर्थम्
at a distance a water body will be holy,
लावण्यम् केश-धारणम्
beauty will be wearing long hair,
उदरम्-भरता स्वार्थ:
belly filling will be human pursuit,
सत्यत्वे धार्ष्ट्यम्-एव हि
truthfulness will be in audacity only indeed
A water body at a distance will be holy. Beauty will be in wearing of long hair, belly filling will be the human pursuit and indeed only audacity will be considered as truthfulness.
दाक्ष्यं कुटुम्बभरणं यशोऽर्थे धर्मसेवनम् ।
एवं प्रजाभिर्दुष्टाभिराकीर्णे क्षितिमण्डले ॥७॥
दाक्ष्यम् कुटुम्ब-भरणम्
skill will be considered in feeding the family,
यश:-अर्थे धर्म-सेवनम्
for fame righteousness will be practiced
एवम् प्रजाभि:-दुष्टाभि:-
thus the public being wicked,
आकीर्णे क्षितिमण्डले
spread on earth surface,
Skill will be considered in feeding the family, righteousness will be practiced for fame. Thus the public being wicked and spread on the surface of the earth,….
ब्रह्मविट्क्षत्रशूद्राणां यो बली भविता नृप: ।
प्रजा हि लुब्धै: राजन्यैर्निर्घृणैर्दस्युधर्मभि: ॥८॥
ब्रह्म-विट्-क्षत्र-शूद्राणाम्
Braahmanas, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, Shudras, of,
य: बली भविता नृप:
who is powerful will be king
प्रजा हि लुब्धै: राजन्यै:-
public indeed, by greedy kings
निर्घृणै:-दस्यु-धर्मभि:
merciless, robbers like attitude
The one who is most powerful amongst the Braahmanas, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, Shudras, will be the king. The people will suffer because of the greedy kings with robbers like attitude,….
आछिन्नदारद्रविणा यास्यन्ति गिरिकाननम् ।
शाकमूलामिषक्षौद्रफलपुष्पाष्टिभोजना: ॥९॥
आछिन्न-दार-द्रविणा:
robbed of wife and wealth,
यास्यन्ति गिरि-काननम्
will go to mountains and forests,
शाक-मूल-आमिष-क्षौद्र-
leaves roots, meat, honey,
फल-पुष्प-अष्टि-भोजना:
flowers fruits seeds as food
Robbed of wife and wealth, they will go away to mountains and forests, and will have leaves, roots, meat, honey, flowers, fruits and seeds for food.
अनावृष्ट्या विनङ्क्ष्यन्ति दुर्भिक्षकरपीडिता: ।
शीतवातातपप्रावृढ्-हिमैरन्योन्यत: प्रजा: ॥१०॥
अनावृष्ट्या विनङ्क्ष्यन्ति
by lack of rains, will perish,
दुर्भिक्ष-कर-पीडिता:
by draught, by tax oppressed
शीत-वात-आतप-प्रावृड्-हिमै:-
cold, storms, harsh sun, hail storms, snow fall
अन्योन्यत: प्रजा:
mutual conflict the people
The people will perish, tormented by lack of rain, oppressed by draught and taxes, cold and storm, harsh sun and hail storms, snow falls and mutual conflicts.
क्षुत्तृङ्भ्यां व्याधिभिश्चैव सन्तप्स्यन्ते च चिन्तया।
त्रिंशद्विंशतिवर्षाणि परमायु: कलौ नृणाम् ॥११॥
क्षुत्-तृङ्भ्याम् व्याधिभि:-च-एव
from hunger and thirst, disease and also
सन्तप्स्यन्ते च चिन्तया
will suffer and by worrying
त्रिंश-द्विंशति-वर्षाणि
thirty twenty years
परम्-आयु: कलौ नृणाम्
at most, the age in Kaliyuga of men
They will suffer from hunger and thirst, diseases and worry. In Kaliyuga the age of men will be of thirty twenty years, at the most.
क्षीयमाणेषु देहेषु देहिनां कलिदोषत: ।
वर्णाश्रमवतां धर्मे नष्टे वेदपथे नृणाम् ॥१२॥
क्षीयमाणेषु देहेषु
on emaciation of the bodies
देहिनाम् कलि-दोषत:
of the embodied, because of the evils of Kali,
वर्ण-आश्रमवताम् धर्मे
in Varna, Aashramas, religion
नष्टे वेद-पथे नृणाम्
being lost the Vedas course, of the people,

पाखण्डप्रचुरे धर्मे दस्युप्रायेषु राजसु ।
चौर्यानृतवृथाहिंसानानावृत्तिषु वै नृषु ॥१३॥
पाखण्ड-प्रचुरे धर्मे
hearsay extensive in religion,
दस्यु-प्रायेषु राजसु
thieves almost the kings,
चौर्य-अनृत-वृथा-हिंसा
robbery, falsehood, purposeless violence,
नाना-वृत्तिषु वै नृषु
in various livelihoods indeed of people,
There will be extensive hearsay in religion, kings will be almost thieves, there will be robbery, falsehood, purposeless violence in various livelihoods of men, indeed,….
शूद्रप्रायेषु वर्णेषुच्छागप्रायासु धेनुषु ।
गृहप्रायेष्वाश्रमेषु यौनप्रायेषु बन्धुषु ॥१४॥
शूद्र-प्रायेषु वर्णेषु
Shudras almost the Varnas,
छाग-प्रायासु धेनुषु
she goats almost the cows,
गृह-प्रायेषु-आश्रमेषु
households almost the Aashramas,
यौन-प्रायेषु बन्धुषु
sex almost friendship
Almost all the Varnas will be Shudras, the cows will be reduced almost to she goats, the Aashramas will almost become households, and friendship will be sex related.
अणुप्रायास्वोषधीषु शमीप्रायेषु स्थास्नुषु ।
विद्युतप्रायेषु मेघेषु शून्यप्रायेषु सद्मसु ॥१५॥
अणु-प्रायासु-औषधीषु
when small almost will be the herbs,
शमी-प्रायेषु स्थास्नुषु
Shami like will be the trees,
विद्युत-प्रायेषु मेघेषु
lightening almost will be the clouds,
शून्य-प्रायेषु सद्मसु
desolate almost the dwellings
When the herbs will be atom like tiny, the trees will be Shami tree like small, clouds will have only lightening, and the dwellings will be desolate,….
इत्थंकलौ गतप्राये जने तु खरधर्मिणि ।
धर्मत्राणाय सत्वेन भगवानवतरिष्यति ॥१६॥
इत्थम्-कलौ गत-प्राये
in this manner, Kali having passed nearly,
जने तु खर-धर्मिणि
people indeed donkey like appearing,
धर्म-त्राणाय सत्वेन
to righteousness restore, by Sattva,
भगवान्-अवतरिष्यति
The Lord will descend
In this manner, when Kaliyuga has nearly passed, when people have become donkey like, to restore righteousness, taking on Sattva, The Lord will descend.
चराचरगुरोर्विष्णोरीश्वरस्याखिलात्मन: ।
धर्मत्राणाय साधूनां जन्म कर्मापनुत्तये ॥१७॥
चर-अचर-गुरो:-विष्णो:-
of the mobile immobile preceptor, Vishnu,
ईश्वरस्य-अखिल-आत्मन:
The Lord Ruler of entire Souls
धर्म-त्राणाय साधूनाम्
righteousness to protect, of the pious
जन्म कर्म-अपनुत्तये
the birth, Karmas to eradicate
The birth of Vishnu, the preceptor of the animate and inanimate, The Ruler Lord of all the Souls, will be to protect righteousness, and to eradicate the Karmas of the pious.
शम्भलग्राममुख्यस्य ब्राह्मणस्य महात्मन: ।
भवने विष्णुयशस: कल्कि: प्रादुर्भविष्यति ॥१८॥
शम्भल-ग्राम-मुख्यस्य
of Shambhala village, the chief
ब्राह्मणस्य महात्मन:
Braahmana, the high souled,
भवने विष्णुयशस:
in the house, of Vishnuyashas
कल्कि: प्रादुर्भविष्यति
Kalki will appear
In the house of the high souled, Vishnuyashas, the chief Braahmana, of the village Shambhala, Kalki, The Lord will appear.
अश्वमाशुगमारुह्य देवदत्तं जगत्पति: ।
असिनासाधुदमनमष्टैश्वर्यगुणान्वित: ॥१९॥
अश्वम्-आशु-गम्-आरुह्य
the horse of swift speed, mounted,
देवदत्तम् जगत्पति:
Devadutta, The Lord,
असिना-असाधु-दमनम्-
by sword, the wicked will subdue
अष्ट-ऐश्वर्य-गुण-अन्वितम्
with eight divine powers wielding
The Lord, Devadutta, wielding the eight divine powers, mounted on the horse with swift speed, will subdue the wicked with a sword.
विचरन्नाशुना क्षोण्यां हयेनाप्रतिमद्युति: ।
नृपलिङ्गच्छदो दस्यून् कोटिशो निहनिष्यति ॥२०॥
विचरन्-आशुना क्षोण्याम्
roaming, on the swift, the earth,
हयेन-अप्रतिम-द्युति:
horse, of unmatched splendour,
नृप-लिङ्ग-छदी दस्यून्
kings insignia flaunting robbers,
कोटिश: निहनिष्यति
in thousands will kill
He will roam the earth mounted on the swift horse of unmatched splendour, and kill in thousands the robbers flaunting the insignia of kings.
अथ तेषां भविष्यन्ति मनांसि विशदानि वै ।
वासुदेवाङ्गरागातिपुण्यगन्धानिलस्पृशाम् ।
पौरजानपदानां वै हतेष्वखिलदस्युषु ॥२१॥
अथ तेषाम् भविष्यन्ति
then, theirs will become
मनांसि विशदानि वै
minds pure, indeed,
वासुदेव-अङ्ग-राग-अति
by, Vaasudeva's body's pigment, very
पुण्य-गन्ध-अनिल-स्पृशाम्
divine fragrance air's touch
पौर-जानपदानाम् वै
of the city's public, indeed,
हतेषु-अखिल-दस्युषु
when are killed all the robbers
When all the robbers are killed, the minds of the public of the city will become pure by the touch of the air made fragrant by the pigment of the body of Shree Vaasudeva.
तेषां प्रजाविसर्गश्च स्थविष्ठ: सम्भविष्यति ।
वासुदेवे भगवति सत्त्वमूर्तौ हृदि स्थिते ॥२२॥
तेषाम् प्रजा-विसर्ग:-च
their progeny taking birth and
स्थविष्ठ: सम्भविष्यति
strong will be
वासुदेवे भगवति
for Vasudeva The Lord
सत्त्व-मूर्तौ हृदि स्थिते
Satva's embodiment in heart established
For The Lord Vaasudeva, The embodiment of Sattva, established in their hearts, their progeny will be strong.
यदावतीर्णो भगवान् कल्किर्धर्मपतिर्हरि: ।
कृतं भविष्यति तदा प्रजासूतिश्च सात्त्विकी ॥२३॥
यदा-अवतीर्ण:-भगवान्
when descends The Lord
कल्कि:-धर्म-पति:-हरि:
Kalki, righteousness protector Shree Hari,
कृतम् भविष्यति तदा
Krita yuga will be then,
प्रजा-सूति:-च सात्त्विकी
public's progeny will be Saatvic
When the protector of righteousness, Shree Hari, The Lord Kalki descends, Krita yuga will prevail, and the progeny of the public will be Saatvic.
यदा चन्द्रश्च सूर्यश्च तथा तिष्यबृहस्पती ।
एकराशौ समेष्यन्ति तदा भवति तत् कृतम् ॥२४॥
यदा चन्द्र:-च सूर्य:-च
when the Moon and the Sun
तथा तिष्य-बृहस्पती
and Jupiter, Pushya constellation,
एक-राशौ समेष्यन्ति
in one zodiac house come together,
तदा भवति तत् कृतम्
then it will be that Satyuga
When the Moon and the Sun and Jupiter and Pushya, come together in one zodiac house, then, it will be Satyuga.
येऽतीता वर्तमाना ये भविष्यन्ति च पार्थिवा: ।
ते ते उद्देशत: प्रोक्ता वंशीया: सोमसूर्ययो: ॥२५॥
ये-अतीता वर्तमाना ये
those past, present those
भविष्यन्ति च पार्थिवा:
who will be and kings
ते ते उद्देशत: प्रोक्ता
of them all in short are mentioned
वंशीया: सोम-सूर्ययो:
of the dynasties of Lunar and Solar
The kings of the Solar and Lunar dynasties, who have passed, those who are present and those who will be, have been mentioned in short.
आरभ्य भवतो जन्म यावन्नन्दभिषेचनम् ।
एतद् वर्षसहस्रं तु शतं पञ्चदशोत्तरम् ॥२६॥
आरभ्य भवत: जन्म
starting from your birth
यावत्-नन्द-अभिषेचनम्
till Nanda's coronation,
एतद् वर्ष-सहस्रम् तु
this, years thousand, indeed,
शतम् पञ्च-दश-उत्तरम्
hundred, five, ten more
The span of time from your birth to the coronation of Nanda will be one thousand one hundred and fifteen years.
सप्तर्षीणां तु यौ पूर्वौ दृश्येते उदितौ दिवि ।
तयोस्तु मध्ये नक्षत्रं दृश्यते यत् समं निशि ॥२७॥
सप्तर्षीणाम् तु यौ पूर्वौ
of the Great Bear constellation, the first two
दृश्येते उदितौ दिवि
are seen risen in the sky,
तयो:-तु मध्ये नक्षत्रम्
in their middle the star
दृश्यते यत् समम् निशि
is seen which, in midnight
The two stars of the constellation of the Great Bear, which are the first risen and seen, the one in the middle of the two, is seen at midnight,…
तेनैत ऋषयो युक्तास्तिष्ठन्त्यब्दशतं नृणाम् ।
ते त्वदीये द्विजा: काले अधुना चाश्रिता मघा: ॥२८॥
तेन-एते ऋषय: युक्ता:-
with them these Great Bear combined
तिष्ठन्ति-अब्द-शतम् नृणाम्
remain for years hundred of the humans
ते त्वदीये द्विजा: काले
they on your birth time
अधुना च-आश्रिता: मघा:
and now present in Maghaa (constellation)
They combined with the stars of the constellation of the Great Bear remain for a hundred human years. Then, at the time of your birth and even now they are in the constellation of Maghaa.
विष्णोर्भगवतो भानु: कृष्णाख्योऽसौ दिवं गत: ।
तदाविशत् कलिर्लोकं पापे यद् रमते जन: ॥२९॥
विष्णो:-भगवत: भानु:
of Vishnu, The Lord, the descent
कृष्ण-आख्य:-असौ दिवम्-गत:
Krishna named, this, to heaven ascended,
तदा-आविशत् कलि:-लोकम्
then entered Kali in the world
पापे यत् रमते जन:
in sin revel when the people
When the descent of Lord Vishnu, known as Krishna, had ascended to heaven, then Kali entered the world, when the people revel in sin.
यावत् स पादपद्माभ्यां स्पृशन्नास्ते रमापति: ।
तावत् कलिर्वै पृथिवीं पराक्रान्तुं न चाशकत् ॥३०॥
यावत् स: पाद-पद्माभ्याम्
till, He, with feet lotuses
स्पृशन्-आस्ते रमापति:
touching remained, The Lord of Laxmi,
तावत् कलि:-वै पृथिवीम्
till then, Kali, indeed, the earth
पराक्रान्तुम् न च-अशकत्
to prevail was not able
As long as the lotus feet of The Lord of Laxmi touched the earth, indeed, Kali was unable to prevail upon it.
तदा देवर्षय: सप्त मघासु विचरन्ति हि ।
तदा प्रवृत्तस्तु कलिर्द्वादशाब्दशतात्मक: ॥३१॥
यदा देव-ऋषय: सप्त
when, the Great Bear
मघासु विचरन्ति हि
in Maghaa enters, indeed,
तदा प्रवृत्त:-तु कलि:-
then, starts indeed Kali
द्वादश-अब्द-शत-आत्मक:
twelve years hundred constituting
When, indeed, the Great Bear enters the constellation of Maghaa, then the period of Kaliyuga starts, indeed, constituting of twelve hundred years.
यदा मघाभ्यो यास्यन्ति पूर्वाषाढां महर्षय: ।
तदा नन्दात् प्रभृत्येष कलिर्वृद्धिं गमिष्यति ॥३२॥
यदा मघाभ्यो यास्यन्ति
when from Maghaa will go away
पूर्वाषाढाम् महर्षय:
to Poorvaashadha the Great Bear,
तदा नन्दात् प्रभृति-एष:
then, from Nanda and others, this
कलि:-वृद्धिम् गमिष्यति
Kali ascendency will gain
From the time when the Great Bear will go away from Maghaa to Poorvaashaadha, then, from the time of Nanda and others, Kali will gain ascendency.
यस्मिन् कृष्णो दिवम् यातस्तस्मिन्नेव तदाहनि ।
प्रतिपन्नं कलियुगमिति प्राहु: पुराविद: ॥३३॥
यस्मिन् कृष्ण: दिवम् यात:-
in which Krishna to heaven went,
तस्मिन्-एव तदा-अहनि
in that only, then, in that day
प्रतिपन्नम् कलि-युगम्-
set in Kaliyuga
इति प्राहु: पुरा-विद:
so said the ancient knowers
That very day and in that very moment that Krishna ascended to heaven, Kaliyuga set in. So say the knowers of the ancients.
दिव्याब्दानां सहस्रान्ते चतुर्थे तु पुन: कृतम् ।
भविष्यति यदा नृणां मन आत्मप्रकाशकम् ॥३४॥
दिव्य-अब्दानाम् सहस्र-अन्ते
divine years thousand at the end
चतुर्थे तु पुन: कृतम्
fourth indeed again Krita,
भविष्यति यदा नृणाम्
will be when of the people
मन: आत्म-प्रकाशकम्
minds, self revealing
At the end of one thousand divine years, again, the fourth Kritayuga will prevail, when the minds of the people will be Self revealing.
इत्येष मानवो वंशो यथा संख्यायते भुवि ।
तथा विट्शूद्रविप्राणां तास्ता ज्ञेया युगे युगे ॥३५॥
इति-एष: मानव: वंश:
thus, this of Manu lineage
यथा संख्यायते भुवि
just as is recorded on the earth,
तथा विट्-शूद्र-विप्राणाम्
like that of Vaishyas, Shudras and Braahmanas,
ता:-ता: ज्ञेया: युगे युगे
all those should be known in every yuga
Thus, just as the lineage of Manu is recorded on the earth, so also, of the Vaishyas, Shoodras and Braahmanas should be recorded of them in every yuga.
एतेषां नामलिङ्गानां पुरुषाणां महात्मनाम् ।
कथामात्रावशिष्टानां कीर्तिरेव स्थिता भुवि ॥३६॥
एतेषाम् नाम-लिङ्गानाम्
of these, names as their insignia
पुरुषाणाम् महात्मनाम्
of the people, the great souls,
कथा-मात्र-अवशिष्टानाम्
stories alone remaining
कीर्ति:-एव स्थिता भुवि
glory only remains on the earth
Of these, of the people of great souls, whose names alone are the insignia, their stories alone remain as their glory on the earth.
देवापि: शान्तनोर्भ्राता मरुश्चेक्ष्वाकुवंशज: ।
कलापग्राम आसाते महायोगबलान्वितौ ॥३७॥
देवापि: शान्तनो:-भ्राता
Devaapi, Shantanoo's brother,
मरु:-च-इक्ष्वाकु-वंश-ज:
Maru and in Ikshwaaku race born,
कलापग्राम आसाते
in Kalaapagraama are present
महा-योग-बल-अन्वितौ
great yogic powers possessed
Shantanoo's brother Devaapi and Maru born in the race of the Ikshvaaku's, who possess great yogic powers, live in Kalaapagraama.
ताविहैत्य कलेरन्ते वासुदेवानुशिक्षितौ ।
वर्णाश्रमयुतं धर्मं पूर्ववत् प्रथयिष्यत: ॥३८॥
तौ-इह-एत्य कले:-अन्ते
they here coming at Kali's end,
वासुदेव-अनुशिक्षितौ
by Vaasudeva taught
वर्णा-आश्रम-युतम् धर्मम्
Varna Aashrama inclusive righteousness
पूर्व-वत् प्रथयिष्यत:
before like will establish
At the end of Kali, they will come here and as taught by Vaasudeva, will establish righteousness inclusive of Varna and Aashrama, like before.
कृतं त्रेता द्वापरं च कलिश्चेति चतुर्युगम् ।
अनेन क्रमयोगेन भुवि प्राणिषु वर्तते ॥३९॥
कृतम् त्रेता द्वापरम् च
Satyuga, Tretaa, Dwaapara and
कलि:-च-इति चतु:-युगम्
Kali and so, this four yugas,
अनेन क्रम-योगेन
in this course of sequence
भुवि प्राणिषु वर्तते
on the earth among the people follows
And so, the four yugas, Satyuga, Tretaa, Dwaapara and Kali, follow this course of sequence among the people on earth.
राजन्नेते मया प्रोक्ता नरदेवास्तथापरे ।
भूमौ ममत्वं कृत्वान्ते हित्वेमां निधनं गता: ॥४०॥
राजन्-एते मया प्रोक्ता:
O King! These by me spoken of
नर-देवा:-तथा-अपरे
the kings and the others,
भूमौ ममत्वम् कृत्वा-अन्ते
on the earth possession established, in end
हित्वा-इमाम् निधनम् गता:
abandoning it, death attained
O King! These kings and the others of whom I have spoken, they established possession of this earth and then abandoning it, attained death.
कृमिविड्भस्मसंज्ञान्ते राजनाम्नोऽपि यस्य च ।
भूतध्रुक् तत्कृते स्वार्थं किं वेद निरयो यत: ॥४१॥
कृमि-विड्-भस्म-संज्ञा-अन्ते
worms, excrement, ashes, named in the end
राजन्-नाम्न:-अपि यस्य च
the king named even whose and
भूत-ध्रुक् तत्-कृते
of living beings tormentor, for that (body)
स्वार्थम् किम् वेद
having been selfish, what knows
निरय: यत:
of hell because
The people even though known as kings, behaved selfishly, for their bodies, which, they did not know will be reduced to the names of worms, excrement, ashes, and that they will be taken to hell, so were tormentors for the living beings.
कथं सेयमखण्डा भू: पूर्वैर्मे पुरुषैर्धृता ।
मत्पुत्रस्य च पौत्रस्य मत्पूर्वा वंशजस्य वा ॥४२॥
कथम् सा-इयम्-अखण्डा भू:
how that this entire earth
पूर्वै:-मे पुरुषै:-धृता
formerly by my people ruled,
मत्-पुत्रस्य च पौत्रस्य
of my son and grandson
मत्-पूर्वा वंशजस्य वा
my after progeny or may be
This entire earth which was ruled over by my people, how may this be my son's or grandson's or of the progeny after me,…
तेजोऽबन्नमयं कायं गृहीत्वाऽऽत्मतयाबुधा: ।
महीं ममतया चोभौ हित्वान्तेऽदर्शनं गता: ॥४३॥
तेज:-अप्-अन्न-मयम् कायम्
fire, water, food, consisting of, the body
गृहीत्वा-आत्मतया-अबुधा:
holding on as the self, ignorant,
महीम् ममतया च-उभौ
the earth's possession, and both
हित्वा-अन्ते-अदर्शनम् गता:
quitting in the end, in oblivion go
The ignorant, considering the body, constituted of fire, water and food, to be the self, and the earth possessed by them, to be their own, in the end quit both and go into oblivion.
ये ये भूपतयो राजन् भुञ्जन्ति भुवमोजसा ।
कालेन ते कृता: सर्वे कथामात्रा: कथासु च ॥४४॥
ये ये भूपतय: राजन्
all those kings, O King!
भुञ्जन्ति भुवम्-ओजसा
rule the earth with valour,
कालेन ते कृता: सर्वे
in Time, they reduced all
कथा-मात्रा: कथासु च
to stories alone, in the stories and
O King! All those kings who have enjoyed the earth with valour, in Time, they were all reduced to mere stories, described in discourses.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां द्वादशस्कन्धे द्वितीयो अध्याय: ॥२॥
Thus ends the second discourse in Book Twelve of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
