सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
संस्तुतो भगवानित्थं मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता ।

नारायणो नरसख: प्रीत आह भृगूद्वहम् ॥१॥


संस्तुत: भगवान्-इत्थम्
extolled The Lord, thus,
मार्कण्डेयेन धीमता
by Maarkandeya, the learned,
नारायण: नरसख:
Naaraayana, Nara as friend,
प्रीत: आह भृगु-उद्वहम्
delighted said to the jewel of the Bhrigus

The Lord, Naaraayana, with His friend Nara, thus extolled by the learned Maarkandeya, were delighted and spoke to the jewel of the Bhrigus, like this,…..


श्री भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
भो भो ब्रह्मर्षिवर्यासि सिद्ध आत्मसमाधिना ।

मयि भक्तयानपायिन्या तप:स्वाध्यायसंयमै: ॥२॥


भो भो ब्रह्मर्षि-वर्य-असि
Oh O! of the Braahmana sages the best, you are
सिद्ध आत्म-समाधिना
fulfilled of purpose, by mind concentration,
मयि भक्तया-अनपायिन्या
in Me by devotion unceasing,
तप:-स्वाध्याय-संयमै:
and austerities, self study and self control

OH O! the best of the Braahmana sages, you are fulfilled of purpose, by the concentration of mind, by unceasing devotion to Me, by your austerities, self-study and self control.


वयं ते परितुष्टा: स्म त्वद्बृहद्व्रतचर्यया ।

वरं प्रतीच्छ भद्रं ते वरदेशादभीप्सितम् ॥३॥


वयम् ते परितुष्टा: स्म
We with you very pleased are
त्वत्-बृहत्-व्रत-चर्यया
by your great vow (of celibacy) undertaking
वरम् प्रतीच्छ भद्रम् ते
boon ask for, May all be well with you,
वरद-ईशात्-अभीप्सितम्
of the boon givers' The Lord, coveted

We are very pleased with you, for your observing the great vow of celibacy. May all be well with you, ask for your coveted boon of The Lord of the boon givers.


ऋषि:-उवाच -
The sage said -
जितं ते देवदेवेश प्रपन्नार्तिहराच्युत ।

वरेणैतावतालं नो यद् भवान् समदृश्यत ॥४॥


जितम् ते देवदेवेश
testified, your, (nature) O Lord of the lords,
प्रपन्-आर्ति-हर-अच्युत
of shelter seekers' agony Dispeller, Immortal Lord!
वरेण-एतावत्-अलम् न: यत्
with boon this much is enough, for us, that,
भवान् समदृश्यत
You have been percieved

O Lord of the lords, Brahmaa and Shiva, your nature of dispelling the agony of those who surrender to You, has been justified. In that, for us, for having been able to perceive You directly, is a boon enough.


गृहीत्वाजादयो यस्य श्रीमत्पादाब्जदर्शनम् ।

मनसा योगपक्वेन स भवान् मेऽक्षगोचर: ॥५॥


गृहीत्वा-अज-आदय: यस्य
obtaining Brahmaa and others, Whose
श्रीमत्-पाद-अब्ज-दर्शनम्
glorious feet lotus sight,
मनसा योग-पक्वेन
by mind with yoga practice matured,
स: भवान् मे-अक्ष-गोचर:
That You, to my senses is percieved

Brahmaa and others, who by their yoga practice matured minds get to see You, That Self same Lord, You, are percieved by my senses directly.


अथाप्यम्बुजपत्राक्ष पुण्यश्लोकशिखामणे ।

द्रक्ष्ये मायां यया लोक: सपालो वेद सद्भिदाम् ॥६॥


अथ-अपि-अम्बुज-पत्र-अक्ष
then even, O Lotus petal eyed Lord!
पुण्य-श्लोक-शिखा-मणे
O of sacred renowned people's crest jewel!
द्रक्ष्ये मायाम् यया लोक:
will see Maayaa, by which the worlds
सपाल: वेद सद्भिदाम्
with the guardians know of the Truth, the diversity

O Lotus petal eyed Lord! O crest jewel of those having sacred renown! I will see Your Maayaa, under the influence of which the three worlds along with the guardians of the spheres know the diversities of the Truth.


सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
इतीडितोऽर्चित: काममृषिणा भगवान् मुने ।

तथेति स स्मयन् प्रागाद् बदर्याश्रममीश्वर: ॥७॥


इति-ईडित:-अर्चित: कामम्-
so told, worshipped desireably,
ऋषिणा भगवान् मुने
by the sage, The Lord, O Shaunaka!
तथा-इति स: स्मयन् प्रागाद्
'that be it', He smilingly proceeded
बदरी-आश्रमम्-ईश्वर:
to Badrikaashrama, Almighty

O Shaunaka! So told, and desireably worshipped by the sage, The Almighty Lord Nara Naaraayana said, 'So be it', and proceeded to Badrikaashrama.


तमेव चिन्तयन्नर्थमृषि: स्वाश्रम एव स: ।

वसन्नग्न्यर्कसोमाम्बुभूवायुवियदात्मसु ॥८॥


तम्-एव चिन्तयन्-अर्थम्-
Him alone , thinking of, the object (promised)
ऋषि: स्व-आश्रमे एव स:
the sage in own hermitage only, he,
वसन्-अग्नि-अर्क-सोम-
remaining, in fire, Sun, Moon,
अम्बु-भू-वायु-वियत्-आत्मसु
Water, Earth, Air, Sky, Self,

The sage continued to live in his own hermitage, thinking of Him alone, and visualising the promised object in the fire, Sun, Moon, Water, Earth, Air, Sky, Self,…..


ध्यायन् सर्वत्र च हरिं भावद्रव्यैरपूजयत् ।

क्वचित् पूजां विसस्मार प्रेमप्रसरसम्प्लुत: ॥९॥


ध्यायन् सर्वत्र च हरिम्
meditated, everywhere and Shree Hari,
भाव-द्रव्यै:-अपूजयत्
with mental objects worshipped,
क्वचित् पूजाम् विसस्मार
sometimes to worship forgot,
प्रेम-प्रसर-सम्प्लुत:
with emotions over flooding carried away

Everywhere he meditated on Shree Hari, and worshipped Him with objects conceived in the mind, and sometimes he even forgot to worship Him, being carried away by the over flooding of emotions.


तस्यैकदा भृगुश्रेष्ठ पुष्पभद्रातटे मुने: ।

उपासीनस्य सन्ध्यायां ब्रह्मन् वायुरभून्महान् ॥१०॥


तस्य-एकदा भृगु-श्रेष्ठ
as he, one day, The jewel of the Bhrigus'
पुष्पभद्रा-तटे मुने:
on Pushpabhadra bank, the sage,
उपासीनस्य सन्ध्यायाम्
sat, in the evening,
ब्रह्मन् वायु:-अभूत्-महान्
O Brahman sage! Wind blew strong

O Jewel of the Bhrigus'! O Brahman sage! One evening, as the sage Maarkandeya, sat on the bank of the river Pushpabhadra, a strong wind started to blow.


तं चण्डशब्दं समुदीरयन्तं बलाहका अन्वभवन् कराला: ।

अक्षस्थविष्ठा मुमुचुस्तडिद्भि: स्वनन्त उच्चैरभिवर्षधारा: ॥११॥


तम् चण्ड-शब्दम् समुदीरयन्तम्
that, with its terrible noise creating,
बलाहका: अन्वभवन् कराला:
the clouds became fierce,
अक्ष-स्थविष्ठा: मुमुचु:-तडिद्भि:
axis thick let out, with lightning
स्वनन्त: उच्चै:-अभिवर्ष-धारा:
flashing, loudly, poured rain streams

With that fierce wind creating terrible noise, the clouds became frightful, and let out flashes of loud lightening, and poured chariot's axis like thick rain streams.


ततो व्यदृश्यन्त चतु:समुद्रा: समन्तत: क्ष्मातलमाग्रसन्त: ।

समीरवेगोर्मिभिरुग्रनक्रमहाभयावर्तगभीरघोषा: ॥१२॥


तत: व्यदृश्यन्त चतु:-समुद्रा:
then, were seen the four oceans,
समन्तत: क्ष्मा-तलम्-आग्रसन्त:
from all sides, the earth's surface devouring,
समीर-वेग-उर्मिभि:-उग्र-नक्र
by wind's speed waves agitated crocodiles,
महा-भय-आवर्त-गभीर-घोषा:
very frightening whirlpools with rumbling sounds

Then, there were seen the four oceans devouring the surface of the earth from all sides, the crocodiles in them were agitated by the speed of the wind and waves, and the oceans had frightening whirlpools with rumbling sounds.


अन्तर्बहिश्चाद्भिरतिद्युभि: खरै: शतह्रदाभीरुपतापितं जगत् ।

चतुर्विधं वीक्ष्य सहात्मना मुनिर्जलाप्लुतां क्ष्मां विमना: समत्रसत् ॥१३॥


अन्त:-बहि:-च-अद्भि:-अति-द्युभि:
inside outside and with waters, very bright,
खरै: शत-ह्रदाभि:-उपतापितम् जगत्
with sharp hundreds lightening tormented universe
चतु:-विधम् वीक्ष्य सह-आत्मना
four fold, seeing, along with himself,
मुनि:-जल-आप्लुताम् क्ष्माम्
the sage, with water deluged earth,
विमना: समत्रसत्
was dismayed and perturbed

The sage was dismayed and perturbed to see the earth deluged with bright water inside and outside, the four fold universe along with himself, tormented by hundreds of sharp lightening.


तस्यैवमुद्वीक्षत ऊर्मिभीषण: प्रभञ्जनाघूर्णितवार्महार्णव: ।

आपूर्यमाणो वरषद्भिरम्बुदै: क्ष्मामप्यधाद् द्वीपवर्षाद्रिभि: समम् ॥१४॥


तस्य-एवम्-उद्वीक्षत ऊर्मि-भीषण:
as he thus looked on, waves terrible,
प्रभञ्जन-आघूर्णित-वार्मह-अर्णव:
violent wind tossing the deluging ocean
आपूर्यमाण: वरषद्भि:-अम्बुदै:
submerged with raining clouds
क्ष्माम्-अपि-अधाद्
the earth, also submerged,
द्वीप-वर्षा-अद्रिभि: समम्
along with Dvipas and Varshas and mountains

As he thus looked on, he saw the terrible waves, with violent winds tossing about the deluging ocean, the raining clouds submerging the earth, along with the Dvipas, Varshas and mountains.


सक्ष्मान्तरिक्षं सदिवं सभागणं त्रैलोक्यमासीत् सह दिग्भिराप्लुतम् ।

स एक एवोर्वरितो महामुनिर्बभ्राम विक्षिप्य जटा जडान्धवत् ॥१५॥


सक्ष्म-अन्तरिक्षम् स-दिवम्
with the earth, the aerial region, with the heavens,
सभागणम् त्रैलोक्यम्-आसीत्
with the hosts of luminaries, the three worlds were
सह दिग्भि:-आप्लुतम्
along with the quarters plunged
स: एक एव-उर्वरित:
he one alone, was saved,
महामुनि:-बभ्राम
the great sage, wandered
विक्षिप्य जटा जड-अन्ध-वत्
tossing the matted locks stupid blind like

The earth, the aerial region, the heavens, with the hosts of luminaries, the three worlds, along with the quarters were plunged in water. The great sage alone was saved, who wandered about tossing his matted locks like a blind stupid person.


क्षुत्तृट्परीतो मकरैस्तिमिङ्गिलैरुपद्रुतो वीचीनभस्वता हत: ।

तमस्यपारे पतितो भ्रमन् दिशो न वेद खं गां च परिश्रमेषित: ॥१६॥


क्षुत्-तृट्-परीत: मकरै:-
hunger thirst oppressed, by crocodiles
तिमिङ्गिलै:-उपद्रुत:
whales assailed,
वीची-नभस्वता हत:
by waves sky high beaten,
तमस्य-पारे पतित:
of darkness endless fallen
भ्रमन् दिश: न वेद
wandering, direction not knowing,
खम् गाम् च परिश्रम-ईषित:
sky, earth and with exhaustion overcome

The sage was oppressed by hunger and thirst, was assailed by crocodiles and whales, was beaten about by sky high waves, and had fallen into endless darkness, drifting about did not know the direction, the sky or the earth, was overcome with exhaustion.


क्वचिद् गतो महावर्ते तरलैस्ताडित: क्वचित् ।

यादोभिर्भक्ष्यते क्वापि स्वयमन्योन्यघातिभि: ॥१७॥


क्वचिद् गत: महा-वर्ते
sometimes fell in a great whirlpool,
तरलै:-ताडित: क्वचित्
by waves beaten about sometimes,
यादोभि:-भक्ष्यते क्व-अपि
by aquatic creature eaten at some places,
स्वयम्-अन्योन्य-घातिभि:
themselves by each other eaten

He sometimes fell in a great whirlpool, and sometimes was beaten about by sky high waves, at some places he was bitten by aquatic creatures who themselves killed each other.


क्वचिच्छोकं क्वचिन्मोहं क्वचिद् दु:खं सुखं भयम् ।

क्वचिन्मृत्युमवाप्नोति व्याध्यादिभिरुतार्दित: ॥१८॥


क्वचित्-शोकम् क्वचित्-मोहम्
at times grief, sometimes infatuation,
क्वचिद् दु:खम् सुखम् भयम्
sometimes, sorrow, joy, fear,
क्वचित्-मृत्युम्-अवाप्नोति
at times death experienced,
व्याध्य-आदिभि:-उत-अर्दित:
by diseases and others indeed was afflicted

At times he experienced grief, at times infatuation, sometimes sorrow joy and fear, at times he experienced death, and was afflicted by diseases and so on.


अयुतायुतवर्षाणां सहस्राणि शतानि च ।

व्यतीयुर्भ्रमतस्तस्मिन् विष्णुमायावृतात्मन: ॥१९॥


अयुत-अयुत-वर्षाणाम्
millions and millions of years,
सहस्राणि शतानि च
thousands and hundreds
व्यतीयु:-भ्रमत:-तस्मिन्
passed, drifting in that (deluge)
विष्णु-माया-आवृत-आत्मन:
by Vishnu's Maayaa clouded himself

Millions, thousands and hundreds of years passed by, as he drifted in the deluge, with his mind clouded by Lord Vishnu's Maayaa, the enchanting potency.


स कदाचिद् भ्रमंस्तस्मिन् पृथिव्या: ककुदि द्विज: ।

न्यग्रोधपोतं ददृशे फलपल्लवशोभितम् ॥२०॥


स: कदाचिद् भ्रमन्-तस्मिन्
he once drifting, in there,
पृथिव्या: ककुदि द्विज:
on earth's hillock, the Braahmana,
न्यग्रोध-पोतम् ददृशे
banyan tree young saw
फल-पल्लव-शोभितम्
with fruits and tender leaves adorned

When drifting about, the Braahmana once saw a young banyan tree, adorned with fruits and tender leaves on a hillock of the earth.


प्रागुत्तरस्यां शाखायां तस्यापि ददृशे शिशुम् ।

शयानं पर्णपुटके ग्रसन्तं प्रभया तम: ॥२१॥


प्राक्-उत्तरस्याम् शाखायाम्
on the north eastern branch
तस्य-अपि ददृशे शिशुम्
of that also, saw a babe
शयानम् पर्ण-पुटके
sleeping on a leaf tender,
ग्रसन्तम् प्रभया तम:
swallowing by the lustre, the darkness

On the north eastern branch of that tree, on a tender leaf, he saw a babe sleeping, swallowing the darkness with his lustre.


महामरकतश्यामं श्रीमद्वदनपङ्कजम् ।

कम्बुग्रीवं महोरस्कं सुनासं सुन्दरभ्रुवम् ॥२२॥


महा-मरकत-श्यामम्
valuable emerald greenish
श्रीमद्-वदन-पङ्कजम्
beautiful face lotus like,
कम्बु-ग्रीवम् महो-अस्कम्
conch shaped neck, broad chest
सुनासम् सुन्दर-भ्रुवम्
shapely nose, and charming eyebrows

The babe had a greenish hue like that of a valuable emerald, lotus like beautiful face , conch shaped neck, broad chest, shapely nose, and charming eyebrows.


श्वासैजदलकाभातं कम्बुश्रीकर्णदाडिमम् ।

विद्रुमाधरभासेषच्छोणायितसुधास्मितम् ॥२३॥


श्वास-एजत्-अलका-आभातम्
by breath waving curls graced,
कम्बु-श्री-कर्ण-दाडिमम्
conch like beautiful ears, with pomegranate flowers,
विद्रुम-अधर-भास-ईषत्-
coral lips lustre somewhat
शोणायित-सुधा-स्मितम्
crimson nectar like smile

He was graced with curls which waved by his own breath, his ears were beautiful like conch shells, and had pomegranate flowers in them, his coral like lips rendered his bright nectar like smile, somewhat crimson.


पद्मगर्भारुणापाङ्गं हृद्यहासावलोकनम् ।

श्वासैजद्वलिसंविग्ननिम्ननाभिदलोदरम् ॥२४॥


पद्म-गर्भ-अरुण-अपाङ्गम्
of a lotus's insides like red eyes' ends,
हृद्य-हास-अवलोकनम्
heart captivating smile and glance
श्वास-एजत्-वलि-संविग्न-
with breath heaving, big
निम्न-नाभि-दलोदरम्
deep navel, fig tree leaves like belly

The ends of his eyes were red like the insides of a lotus, his smile and glances were heart captivating, his big and deep navel on his fig tree leaves like belly heaved with his breath.


चार्वङ्गुलिभ्यां पाणिभ्यामुन्नीय चरणाम्बुजम् ।

मुखे निधाय विप्रेन्द्रो धयन्तं वीक्ष्य विस्मित: ॥२५॥


चारु-अङ्गुलिभ्याम् पाणिभ्याम्-
with charming fingers, hands,
उन्नीय चरण-अम्बुजम्
lifting foot lotus
मुखे निधाय विप्रेन्द्र:
in the mouth placing, The Braahmana's foremost
धयन्तम् वीक्ष्य विस्मित:
sucking seeing was amazed

The foremost of the Braahmanas', sage Maarkandeya, was amazed to see the babe lifting his lotus like foot into the mouth with his charming fingers and hands, and sucking it.


तद्दर्शनाद् वीतपरिश्रमो मुदा प्रोत्फुल्लहृत्पद्मविलोचनाम्बुज: ।

प्रहृष्ठरोमाद्भुतभावशङ्कित: प्रष्टुं पुरस्तं प्रससार बालकम् ॥२६॥


तत्-दर्शनात् वीत-परिश्रम:
by that sight, disappeared fatigue,
मुदा प्रोत्फुल्ल-हृत्-पद्म
with delight blooming of heart lotus
विलोचन-अम्बुज:
eyes lotuses
प्रहृष्ठ-रोमा-अद्भुत-भाव:
with rising on end the hair, awe filled,
शङ्कित: प्रष्टुम् पुर:-तम्
doubtful, to ask in front of him,
प्रससार बालकम्
approached the child

By the sight of the babe, the fatigue of sage Maarkandeya vanished, his heart and eyes lotuses bloomed, his hair stood on end, filled with awe and doubt, he approached the child to ask,…


तावच्छिशोर्वै श्वसितेन भार्गव: सोऽन्त:शरीरं मशको यथाविशत् ।

तत्राप्यदो न्यस्तमचष्ट कृत्स्नशो यथा पुरामुह्यदतीव विस्मित: ॥२७॥


तावत्-शिशो:-वै श्वसितेन
then, of the child, indeed, with the breath,
भार्गव: स:-अन्त:-शरीरम्
Bhaargava, he, inside the body
मशक: यथा-अविशत्
mosquito like entered,
तत्र-अपि-अद: न्यस्तम्-अचष्ट
there also, the universe set up saw
कृत्स्नश: यथा पुरा
the whole, like before,
मुह्यत्-अतीव विस्मित:
was perplexed and very astonished

He, Bhaargava, then, entered the body of the child with his breath, like a mosquito. There also he saw the whole universe arranged like before. He was vey perplexed and astonished.


खं रोदसी भगणानद्रिसागरान् द्वीपान् सवर्षान् ककुभ: सुरासुरान् ।

वनानि देशान् सरित: पुराकरान् खेटान् व्रजानाश्रमवर्णवृत्तय: ॥२८॥


खम् रोदसी भगणान्-
aerial region, heaven earth, hosts of luminaries,
अद्रि-सागरान् द्वीपान् स-वर्षान्
mountains, oceans, islands, with divisions
ककुभ: सुर-असुरान्
directions, gods, demons,
वनानि देशान् सरित:
forests, countries, rivers,
पुर-आकरान् खेटान् व्रजान्-
towns, mines, residences of farmers, dwellings,
आश्रम-वर्ण-वृत्तय:
hermitages, the Varnas, and their functions

There he saw the aerial region, heaven, earth, hosts of luminaries, mountains, oceans, islands, with divisions, directions, gods, demons, forests, countries, rivers, towns, mines, residences of farmers, dwellings of cowherds, hermitages, the four Varnas, and their functions.


महान्ति भूतान्यथ भौतिकान्यसौ कालं च नानायुगकल्पकल्पनम् ।

यत् किञ्चिदन्यद् व्यवहारकारणं ददर्श विश्वं सदिवावभासितम् ॥२९॥


महान्ति भूतानि-अथ भौतिकानि-
gross elements, beings, then, material objects
असौ कालम् च नाना-युग-
this Time, and various Yugas,
कल्प-कल्पनम्
Kalpas conceived
यत् किञ्चित्-अन्यत्
whatever other
व्यवहार-कारणम् ददर्श विश्वम्
worldly living causes, saw the world,
सत्-इव-अवभासितम्
real like projected

He saw the gross elements, the beings, then, the material objects, this, Time, with various Yugas and Kalpas conceived, and whatever other cause of worldly living, he saw in the world, projected like real.


हिमालयं पुष्पवहां च तां नदीं निजाश्रमं तत्र ऋषीनपश्यत् ।

विश्वं विपश्यञ्छ्वसिताच्छिशोर्वै बहिर्निरस्तो न्यपतल्लयाब्धौ ॥३०॥


हिमालयम् पुष्पवहाम् च ताम् नदीम्
Himalayas, Pushpabhadra, and that river,
निज-आश्रमम् तत्र ऋषीन्-अपश्यत्
own hermitage, there the sages saw,
विश्वम् विपश्यन्-श्वसितात्-
the world, on looking, by the breath,
शिशो:-वै बहि:-निरस्त:
of the child, indeed, outside came
न्यपतत्-लय-अब्धौ
fell in the deluge ocean

He saw the Himalayas, that river Pushpabhadra, his own hermitage, there, he saw the sages. As he was looking at the world, he was thrown out by the breath of the child, and he fell in the deluge ocean.


तस्मिन् पृथिव्या: ककुदि प्ररूढं वटं च तत्पर्णपुटे शयानम् ।

तोकं च तत्प्रेमसुधास्मितेन निरीक्षितोऽपाङ्गनिरीक्षणेन ॥३१॥


तस्मिन् पृथिव्या: ककुदि
therein, on the earth's elevation,
प्ररूढम् वटम् च
growing banyan and
तत्-पर्ण-पुटे शयानम्
on its leaf surface lying
तोकम् च तत्-प्रेम-सुधा-स्मितेन
a babe, and his loving nectar like smile,
निरीक्षित:-अपाङ्ग-निरीक्षणेन
watching with sidelong gaze

Therein, he saw on the elevation of the earth, a banyan tree growing, on the surface a leaf of which, lay the babe, with his loving nectar like smile, watching with a sidelong gaze.


अथ तं बालकं वीक्ष्य नेत्राभ्यां धिष्ठितं हृदि ।

अभ्ययादतिसंक्लिष्ट: परिष्वक्तुमधोक्षजम् ॥३२॥


अथ तम् बालकम् वीक्ष्य
then that child seeing,
नेत्राभ्याम् धिष्ठितम् हृदि
by the eyes enthroned in the heart,
अभ्ययात्-अति-संक्लिष्ट:
proceeded, very afflicted,
परिष्वक्तुम्-अधोक्षजम्
to embrace Lord Vishnu

The sage, on seeing the child was very much afflicted and proceeded to embrace Him, non other than Lord Vishnu, Who was seated in his heart through his eyes.


तावत् स भगवान् साक्षाद् योगाधीशो गुहाशय: ।

अन्तर्दध ऋषे: सद्यो यथेहानीशनिर्मिता ॥३३॥


तावत् स: भगवान्
just then, That Lord
साक्षात् योगाधीश: गुहाशय:
Himself, The Master of Yoga, in hearts dwelling,
अन्तर्दध ऋषे: सद्य:
disappeared, of the sage instantly
यथा-इह-अनीश-निर्मिता
like here, of the unlucky undertaking

Just then, The Lord, Himself, The Master of Yoga, dwelling in all hearts, disappeared, making the effort of the sage fruitless, like the undertaking of the unlucky, here.


तमन्वथ वटो ब्रह्मन् सलिलं लोकसम्प्लव: ।

तिरोधायि क्षणादस्य स्वाश्रमे पूर्ववत् स्थित: ॥३४॥


तम्-अनु-अथ वट: ब्रह्मन्
Him, following, then, banyan tree, O Sage!
सलिलम् लोक-सम्प्लव:
the water, the universal deluge
तिरोधायि क्षणात्-अस्य
disappeared, in a moment, his,
स्व-आश्रमे पूर्व-वत् स्थित:
in own hermitage before like stood

O Braahmana sage! Following Him, The Lord, then, the banyan tree, the water and the universal deluge disappeared, in a moment, and he stood in his own hermitage like before.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां द्वादशस्कन्धे मायादर्नं नाम नवम: अध्याय: ॥९॥


Thus ends the ninth discourse entitled 'Maarkandeya witnesses (the Lord's) Maayaa,' in Book Twelve of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
