शौनक उवाच -
Shaunaka said -
अथेममर्थं पृच्छामो भवन्तं बहुवित्तमम् ।
समस्ततन्त्रराद्धान्ते भवान् भागवततत्ववित् ॥१॥
अथ-इमम्-अर्थम् पृच्छाम:
now, this implication, will ask,
भवन्तम् बहु-वित्तमम्
to you, of many subjects knower
समस्त-तन्त्र-राद्ध-अन्ते
of all the scriptures established conclusion
भवान् भागवत-तत्व-वित्
you of The Lord the essence knower
Now, I will ask you, the knower of many subjects, the implication of the established conclusion stated in the scriptures, O You! The knower of the essence of The Lord!
तान्त्रिका: परिचर्यायां केवलस्य श्रिय: पते: ।
अङ्गोपाङ्गायुधाकल्पं कल्पयन्ति यथा च यै: ॥२॥
तान्त्रिका: परिचर्यायाम्
the knowers of Tantra, when worshipping
केवलस्य श्रिय: पते:
of The One Alone, Goddess Laxmi's spouse,
अङ्गोपाङ्-आयुध-आकल्पम्
various limbs, weapons, ornaments,
कल्पयन्ति यथा च यै:
imagine as, and by which
Please tell us, How and by what means, the knowers of Taantra, in the course of their worship, imagine the limbs, weapons and ornaments of The One Alone, Goddess Laxmi's spouse, Lord Vishnu.
तन्नो वर्णय भद्रं ते क्रियायोगं बुभुत्सताम् ।
येन क्रियानैपुणेन मर्त्यो यायादमर्त्यताम् ॥३॥
तत्-न: वर्णय भद्रम् ते
that, to us describe, May good betide you!
क्रिया-योगम् बुभुत्सताम्
Kriyaa yoga, (to us) eager to know,
येन क्रिया-नैपुणेन
by which, active expertise,
मर्त्य: यायात्-अमर्त्यताम्
a mortal goes to immortality
May good betide you! Do describe to us, who are eager to know, that Kriyaa Yoga, by the active expertise in which, a mortal person attains immortality.
सूत उवाच -
Soota said -
नमस्कृत्य गुरून् वक्ष्ये विभूतीर्वैष्णवीरपि ।
या: प्रोक्ता वेदतन्त्राभ्यामाचार्यै: पद्मजादिभि: ॥४॥
नमस्कृत्य गुरून् वक्ष्ये
bowing to (my) preceptors, I will say
विभूती:-वैष्णवी:-अपि
glories of Lord Vishnu even,
या: प्रोक्ता वेद-तन्त्राभ्याम्-
which is spoken of by the Vedas and Tantras,
आचार्यै: पद्मज-आदिभि:
preceptors, The Lotus born and others
Bowing to my preceptors, I will tell you about the glories of Lord Vishnu, which are spoken of in the Vedas and in the Tantras, and by the preceptors like The Lotus born Brahmaa and others.
मायाद्यैर्नवभिस्तत्त्वै: स विकारमयो विराट् ।
निर्मितो दृश्यते यत्र सचित्के भुवनत्रयम् ॥५॥
माया-आद्यै:-नवभि:-तत्त्वै:
by Maayaa (Prakriti) and other nine elements
स: विकारमय: विराट्
He, having modifications, the huge Spirit,
निर्मित: दृश्यते यत्र
created is seen where
सचित्के भुवन त्रयम्
along with the consciousness of Spirit, worlds three
He, the huge Spirit, having modifications, is created by Maayaa and nine other elements, which is seen in the three worlds along with the consciousness of The Spirit.
एतद् वै पौरुषं रूपं भू: पादौ द्यौ: शिरो नभ: ।
नाभि: सूर्योऽक्षिणी नासे वायु: कर्णौ दिश: प्रभो: ॥६॥
एतद् वै पौरुषम् रूपम्
this certainly is of The Purusha, the form,
भू: पादौ द्यौ: शिर: नभ:
earth feet, heaven head, sky
नाभि: सूर्य:-अक्षिणी नासे
navel, Sun eyes, nostrils
वायु: कर्णौ दिश: प्रभो:
air, ears quarters, of The Lord
This certainly is the form of The Lord, The Purusha, earth is the feet, heaven is the head, the sky is the navel, Sun are the eyes, nostrils are the air, and the quarters are the ears.
प्रजापति: प्रजननमपानो मृत्युरीशितु: ।
तद्बाहवो लोकपाला मनश्चन्द्रो भ्रुवौ यम: ॥७॥
प्रजापति: प्रजननम्-
Prajaapati, generative organs,
अपान: मृत्यु:-ईशितु:
anus, Death of The Lord,
तत्-बाहव: लोकपाला:
His arms are guardians of the spheres,
मन:-चन्द्र: भ्रुवौ यम:
mind is Moon, eye-brows god of death
The god of creation is His generative organs, His anus is Death, His arms are the guardians of the spheres, His mind is the Moon and His eyebrows are the god of Death.
लज्जोत्तरोऽधरो लोभो दन्ता ज्योत्स्ना स्मयो भ्रम: ।
रोमाणि भूरुहा भूम्नो मेघा: पुरुषमूर्धजा: ॥८॥
लज्जा-उत्तर:-अधर: लोभ:
modesty the upper, the lower lip greed,
दन्ता: ज्योत्सना स्मय: भ्रम:
teeth, moonlight, smile Maayaa,
रोमाणि भूरुहा: भूम्न:
body hair the trees, of The Infinite Lord,
मेघा: पुरुष-मूर्धजा:
clouds of The Cosmic Person, the hair
The upper lip is modesty, and greed is the lower lip of The Infinite Lord, His teeth are the moonlight, His smile is Maayaa, the hair of His body are the trees and the clouds are the hair on the head of The Cosmic Person.
यावानयं वै पुरुषो यावत्या संस्थया मित: ।
तावानसावपि महापुरुषो लोकसंस्थया ॥९॥
यावान्-अयम् वै पुरुष:
to as much (measure) indeed, The Purusha
यावत्या संस्थया मित:
to that much measure mutually (the mortal man)
तावान्-असौ-अपि
that much This also
महापुरुष: लोक-संस्थया
The Cosmic Person by the sphere's measures
In accordance with the various measures, of the spheres, The Purusha, The Cosmic Person is that much also as the mutual measure of the mortal man, in reference of his own limbs.
कौस्तुभव्यपदेशेन स्वात्मज्योतिर्बिभर्त्यज: ।
तत्प्रभा व्यापिनी साक्षात् श्रीवत्समुरसा विभु: ॥१०॥
कौस्तुभ-व्यपदेशेन
Kaustubha, in the form of
स्व-आत्म-ज्योति:-बिभर्ति-अज:
own Self lustre adorns The Birthless,
तत्-प्रभा व्यापिनी साक्षात्
its splendour diffusive, directly,
श्रीवत्सम्-उरसा विभु:
as Shree Vatsa, on the chest (wears) The Omnipresent
The Birthless Lord adorns His own Self Lustre in the form of the Kaustubha, and the diffusive splendour of that, He adorns on His chest as the Shree Vatsa mark.
स्वमायां वनमालाख्यां नानागुणमयी दधत् ।
वासश्छन्दोमयं पीतं ब्रह्मसूत्रं त्रिवृत् स्वरम् ॥११॥
स्व-मायाम् वनमाला-आख्याम्
own Maayaa, Vanamaala named,
नाना-गुणमयी दधत्
various Gunas having, adorns,
वास:-छन्दोमयम् पीतम्
attire, Vedas consisting of, yellow,
ब्रह्म-सूत्रम् त्रिवृत् स्वरम्
the sacred thread, the three sound (AUM)
He adorns His own Maayaa in the form of the garland named Vanamaalaa consisting of the various Gunas, His yellow attire consists of the Vedas, and the sacred thread is the three lettered sound of Aum.
विभर्ति सांख्यं योगं च देवो मकरकुण्डले ।
मौलिं पदं पारमेष्ठ्यं सर्वलोकाभयङ्करम् ॥१२॥
विभर्ति सांख्यम् योगम् च
flaunts Saankhya Yoga and
देव: मकर-कुण्डले
The Lord as alligator ear-rings
मौलिम् पदम् पारमेष्ठ्यम्
as the diadem, realm of Brahmaa
सर्व-लोक-अभयङ्करम्
to all the worlds fearlessness granting
The Lord flaunts the philosophies of Saankhya and Yoga as alligator shaped ear-rings, and the highest realm of Brahmaa as a diadem, granting fearlessness to all other realms.
अव्याकृतमनन्ताख्यमासनं यदधिष्ठित: ।
धर्मज्ञानादिभिर्युक्तं सत्त्वं पद्ममिहोच्यते ॥१३॥
अव्याकृतम्-अनन्त-आख्यम्-
the Unmanifest, Shesha, named,
आसनम् यत्-अधिष्ठित:
seat, on which reclines,
धर्म-ज्ञान-अदिभि:-युक्तम्
righteousness, wisdom and others consisting of
सत्त्वम् पद्मम्-इह-उच्यते
Sattva, the Lotus here is called
The couch on which He reclines is known by the name of The Unmanifest Shesha, and the seat, which consists of righteousness wisdom and so on, is what is known here as the Lotus.
ओज:सहोबलयुतं मुख्यतत्त्वं गदां दधत् ।
अपां तत्त्वं दरवरं तेजस्तत्त्वं सुदर्शनम् ॥१४॥
ओज: सह:-बल-युतम्
vitality, with strength accompanied,
मुख्य-तत्त्वम् गदाम् दधत्
the primary element, (vital air), mace wielding
अपाम् तत्त्वम् दर-वरम्
water element conch superior
तेज:-तत्त्वम् सुदर्शनम्
fire element The Sudarshana, (the discus)
He wields the mace, Kaumodaki, representing the vitality accompanied with strength as the primary element of vital air, the superior conch Paanchajanya, as the element of water, the discus, Sudarshana as the element of fire.
नभोनिभं नभस्तत्त्वमसिं चर्म तमोमयम् ।
कालरूपं धनु: शार्ङ्गं तथा कर्ममयेषुधिम् ॥१५॥
नभ:-निभम् नभ:-तत्त्वम्-
sky like clear, the ether element
असिम् चर्म तमोमयम्
sward, the shield Tamas representing,
काल-रूपम् धनु: शार्ङ्गम्
Time representing the bow Shaaranga,
तथा कर्ममय-ईषुधिम्
and Karma representing the quiver
He adorns the sward clear as the sky, representing the ether element, the shield representing Tamas, the bow Shaaranga representing the Time, and Karma are represented by the quiver.
इन्द्रियाणि शरानाहुराकूतीरस्य स्यन्दनम् ।
तन्मात्राण्यस्याभिव्यक्तिं मुद्रयार्थक्रियात्मताम् ॥१६॥
इन्द्रियाणि शरान्-आहु:-
the senses, arrows are called,
आकूती:-अस्य स्यन्दनम्
the cosmic mind, (action) His chariot,
तन्मात्राणि-अस्य-अभिव्यक्तिम्
the subtle elements its (chariot's) exterior,
मुद्रयार्थ-क्रिया-आत्मताम्
Madras' meaning, position of hands, action Own
The senses, are called the arrows, the cosmic mind, the power of action is His chariot, and the subtle elements are the exterior of the chariot, and the Mudra, meaning the position of the hand, is His action of boon granting to His devotees.
मण्डलं देवयजनं दीक्षा संस्कार आत्मन: ।
परिचर्या भगवत आत्मनो दुरितक्षय: ॥१७॥
मण्डलम् देव-यजनम्
the orb of the Sun is Lord's worship
दीक्षा संस्कार आत्मन:
initiation the ritual of the Self,
परिचर्या भगवत
service of The Lord
आत्मन: दुरित-क्षय:
of ones own sins eradication
The worship of The Lord is the orb of the Sun, the initiation by a Guru is the ritual of Self evolvement, and serving The Lord is the eradication of ones own sins.
भगवान् भगशब्दार्थं लीलाकमलमुद्वहन् ।
धर्मं यशश्च भगवांश्चामरव्यजनेऽभजत् ॥१८॥
भगवान् भग-शब्द-अर्थम्
The Lord, 'Bhaga' word's meaning,
लीला-कमलम्-उद्वहन्
in the playfully lotus, carrying,
धर्मम् यश:-च भगवान्-
righteousness renown and The Lord
चामर-व्यजने-अभजत्
in the chawries and fan maintains
The Lord carries the meaning of the word, 'Bhaga' in the lotus which He playfully carries in His hand, and maintains righteousness and renown in the chawries and the fan, which are carried by His attendents, standing close by.
आतपत्रं तु वैकुण्ठं द्विजा धामाकुतोभयम् ।
त्रिवृद्वेद: सुपर्णाख्यो यज्ञं वहति पूरुषम् ॥१९॥
आतपत्रम् तु वैकुण्ठम्
umbrella like indeed Vaikuntha (His realm)
द्विजा धाम-अकुतोभयम्
O Braahmanas! The realm without fear,
त्रिवृद्-वेद: सुपर्ण-आख्य:
three parts of Veda, as Suparna, (Gaduda)
यज्ञम् वहति पूरुषम्
the sacrifices carries and The Primary Person
O Braahmanas! His realm without fear from any where, Vaikuntha, is like His umbrella, the Vedas with the three parts is named as Suparna, Gaduda, which carries out the sacrifices, and also carries The Primary Person.
अनपायिनी भगवती श्री: साक्षादात्मनो हरे: ।
विष्वक्सेनस्तन्त्रमूर्तिर्विदित: पार्षदाधिप: ।
नन्दादयोऽष्टौ द्वा:स्थाश्च तेऽणिमाद्या हरेर्गुणा: ॥२०॥
अनपायिनी भगवती श्री:
inseparable, Goddess Shree,
साक्षात्-आत्मनो हरे:
Herself is the Soul of Shree Hari,
विष्वक्सेन:-तन्त्र-मूर्ति:-
Vishvaksena, the Tantras personifying,
विदित: पार्षद्-अधिप:
is known as the attendant chief,
नन्द-आदय:-अष्टौ द्वा:-स्था:-
Nanda and the others, eight gate keepers,
ते-अणिमा-आद्या: हरे:-गुणा:
are those Animaa and others of Shree Hari's attributes
Goddess Shree, is Herself the Soul of Shree Hari, Vishvakasena, personifying the Tantras, is known as the chief attendant, Nanda and others, eight, are His gate-keepers, and Animaa and others are His attributes.
वासुदेव: सङ्कर्षण: प्रद्युम्न: पुरुष: स्वयम् ।
अनिरुद्ध इति ब्रह्मन् मूर्तिव्यूहोऽभिधीयते ॥२१॥
वासुदेव: सङ्कर्षण:
Vasudeva, Sankarshana,
प्रद्युम्न: पुरुष: स्वयम्
Pradyumna, The Supreme Person, Himself,
अनिरुद्ध: इति ब्रह्मन्
Aniruddha, thus, O Braahmana sage!
मूर्तिव्यूह:-अभिधीयते
in forms four is known to be
O Braahmana sage! The Supreme Person, Himself, is known to be in the four adorable forms of Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha.
स विश्वस्तैजस: प्राज्ञस्तुरीय इति वृत्तिभि: ।
अर्थेन्द्रियाशयज्ञानैर्भगवान् परिभाव्यते ॥२२॥
स: विश्व:-तैजस: प्राज्ञ:-
He, Vishva, Taijasa, Praagya,
तुरीय इति वृत्तिभि:
Tureeya, by these states,
अर्थ-इन्द्रिय-आशय-ज्ञानै:-
by material, senses, mind and Knowledge
भगवान् परिभाव्यते
Bhagavaan is contemplated upon
The same Lord is contemplated upon in states of Vishva, Taijasa, Praagya, and Tureeya, by the material objects, senses, mind and the knowledge of Self Realization, as Bhagavaan.
अङ्गोपाङ्गायुधाकल्पैर्भगवांस्तच्चतुष्टयम् ।
बिभर्ति स्म चतुर्मूर्तिर्भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ॥२३॥
अङ्ग-उपाङ्ग-आयुध-आकल्पै:-
limbs, attendents (as limbs) weapons, ornaments
भगवान्-तत्-चतुष्टयम्
The Lord, these four,
बिभर्ति स्म चतु:-मूर्ति:-
assumes the four forms
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
The Lord, Shree Hari
The Lord, Shree Hari, with His limbs, attendents, weapons and ornaments, assumes the four forms, as the four Lords.
द्विजऋषभ स एष ब्रह्मयोनि: स्वयंदृक् स्वमहिमपरिपूर्णो मायया च स्वयैतत् ।
सृजतिहरतिपातीत्याख्ययानावृताक्षो विवृत इव निरुक्तस्तत्परैरात्मलभ्य: ॥२४॥
द्विज-ऋषभ स: एष:
O of the Braahmanas the Best! He This,
ब्रह्म-योनि: स्वयम्-दृक्
of Vedas The Source, self-effulgent,
स्व-महिम-परिपूर्ण:
in own glory perfect,
मायया-च स्वया-एतत्
by Maayaa of His own, this,
सृजति-हरति-पाति-इति-
creates, dissolves, preserves, thus,
आख्यया-अनावृत-अक्ष:
by names, undiminished of consciousness,
विवृत: इव निरुक्त:-
differentiated like is described,
तत्-परै:-आत्म-लभ्य:
by His devotees in The Self attainable
O Best of the Braahmanas! This, He, The Source of Vedas, The Self-Effulgent, perfect in His own glory, creates, dissolves, preserves, thus, this by His own Maayaa, and so is differentiated by names, but is not diminished of His consciousness, and is attainable by His devotees in their Self.
श्रीकृष्ण कृष्णसख वृष्ण्यृषभावनिध्रुग्राजन्यवंशदहनानपवर्गवीर्य ।
गोविन्द गोपवनिताव्रजभृत्यगीततीर्थश्रव: श्रवणमङ्गल पाहि भृत्यान् ॥२५॥
श्रीकृष्ण कृष्ण-सख वृष्णि-ऋषभ-
O glorious Krishna, Arjuna's friend, Vrishnees scion
अवनि-ध्रुक्-राजन्य-वंश-दहन-
the earth's enemies, Kshatriya race fire,
अनपवर्ग-वीर्य गोविन्द
of undiminished power, Govinda,
गोप-वनिता-व्रज-भृत्य
by cowherd women, Vraja lovers, (devotees)
गीत-तीर्थ-श्रव:
sung of, holy to hear,
श्रवण-मङ्गल पाहि भृत्यान्
to hear auspicious, protect Your votaries
O glorious Krishna, Arjuna's friend, Vrishnees scion, fire to the Kshatriya race, the enemies of the earth, O Govinda, of undiminished power, sung of by hoards of cowherd women and the lovers of Vraja, Naarada and others, holy and auspicious to hear of, Do protect us, Your votaries!
य इदं कल्य उत्थाय महापुरुषलक्षणम् ।
तच्चित्त: प्रयतो जप्त्वा ब्रह्म वेद गुहाशयम् ॥२६॥
य: इदम् कल्य उत्थाय
who-so-ever, in the morning arising,
महा-पुरुष-लक्षणम्
of The Mighty Person's description
तत्-चित्त: प्रयत: जप्त्वा
in Him mind fixing, repeats,
ब्रह्म वेद गुह-आशयम्
Brahman will know, in heart enshrined
Who-so-ever, arises in the morning, getting pure, repeats this description of The Supreme Person, with his mind fixed on Him, will know Brahman, enshrined in his heart.
शौनक उवाच -
Shaunaka said -
शुको यदाह भगवान् विष्णुराताय शृण्वते ।
सौरो गणो मासि मासि नाना वसति सप्तक: ॥२७॥
शुक: यत्-आह भगवान्
Shuka, that which said, the lord
विष्णुराताय शृण्वते
to Vishnu's protégé, Pareekshit, when listening
सौरो गणो मासि मासि
the Sun's batch, every month
नाना वसति सप्तक:
in various (states) remain the seven
As Pareekshit, the protégé of Vishnu, was listening to Bhaagavata, lord Shuka spoke to him about the batch consisting of seven presided over by the Sun god, that remain on duty month after month.
तेषां नामानि कर्माणि संयुक्तानामधीश्वरै: ।
ब्रूहि न: श्रद्धानानां व्यूहं सूर्यात्मनो हरे: ॥२८॥
तेषाम् नामानि कर्माणि
their, names functions
संयुक्तानाम्-अधीश्वरै:
combined with the deities (presiding over them)
ब्रूहि न: श्रद्धानानाम्
do tell us, who are full of reverence
व्यूहम् सूर्य-आत्मन: हरे:
the entourage of Sun personified Shree Hari,
Do tell us, who are full of reverence, their names and functions, combined with their presiding deities, the entourage of the Sun, who is a personification of Shree Hari.
सूत उवाच-
Soota said -
अनाद्यविद्यया विष्णोरात्मन: सर्वदेहिनाम् ।
निर्मितो लोकतन्त्रोऽयं लोकेषु परिवर्तते ॥२९॥
अनादि-अविद्यया विष्णो:-
by the beginning-less Maayaa, of Vishnu,
आत्मन: सर्व-देहिनाम्
the very soul of all embodied beings,
निर्मित: लोक-तन्त्र:-अयम्
is created, the worlds' activating, this (Sun)
लोकेषु परिवर्तते
in the worlds courses
This Sun is created by the beginning-less Maaya of Vishnu, Who is the very soul of all the embodied beings. As this Sun courses the world, it keeps the activities of the world going on.
एक एव हि लोकानां सूर्य आत्माऽऽदिकृत्-हरि: ।
सर्ववेदक्रियामूलमृषिभिर्बहुधोदित: ॥३०॥
एक: एव हि लोकानाम् सूर्य:
one alone indeed of the worlds' is Sun,
आत्मा-आदि-कृत्-हरि:
the soul, the primary activator, Shree Hari,
सर्व-वेद-क्रिया-मूलम्-
of all the Veda's rites the source,
ऋषिभि:-बहुधा-उदित:
by the sages is in various names called
The Sun, the very soul of Shree Hari, is one and the only primary activator of the worlds, and the source of the rites of all the Vedas, is called by various names by the sages.
कालो देश: क्रिया कर्ता करणं कार्यमागम: ।
द्रव्यं फलमिति ब्रह्मन् नवधोक्तोऽजया हरि: ॥३१॥
काल: देश: क्रिया कर्ता
as Time, place, activity, the doer,
करणम् कार्यम्-आगम:
an instrument, a duty, sacred text,
द्रव्यम् फलम्-इति ब्रह्मन्
material, fruit, thus, O Braahmana sage!
नवधा-उक्त:-अजया हरि:
by nine names, is called, because of Maayaa, Shree Hari
O Braahmana sage! because of the beginning-less Maayaa, Shri Hari is called by nine names, as, Time, a place, an activity, the doer, an instrument, a duty, sacred text, a material (rice), fruit (heaven).
मध्वादिषु द्वादशसु भगवान् कालरूपधृक् ।
लोकतन्त्राय चरति पृथग्द्वादशभिर्गणै: ॥३२॥
मधु-आदिषु द्वादशसु
in Madhu maas (spring season) and twelve,
भगवान् काल-रूप-धृक्
The Lord, Time form assuming,
लोक-तन्त्राय चरति
for the world's going on, moves,
पृथक्-द्वादशभि:-गणै:
with different twelve attendant batches
For the sake of the going on of the world, The Lord assumes the form of Time, and runs through the course of the twelve months, Madhu maas, and so on, with batches of twelve different attendents.
धाता कृतस्थली हेतिर्वासुकी रथकृन्मुने ।
पुलस्त्यस्तुम्बुरुरिति मधुमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥३३॥

Rathakrit (Yaksha), O Sage!

Pulastya (the sage) Tumburu (Gandharva), these
मधु-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Madhu maas, month of spring take forward, these
O Sage! Dhaataa (Sun), Kritasthali (Apsaraa) Heti (Raakshasha) Vaasuki (snake) Rathakrit (Yaksha), Pulastya (the sage) Tumburu (Gandharva), these take forward the month of spring, Madhu maas, or Chaitra.
अर्यमा पुलहोऽथौजा: प्रहेति: पुञ्जिकस्थली ।
नारद: कच्छनीरश्च नयन्त्ये स्म माधवम् ॥३४॥
अर्यमा पुलह:-अथौजा:
Aryamaa, Pulaha, Athaujaa,

नारद: कच्छनीर:-च
Naarada, Kacchaneera, and
नयन्त्ये स्म माधवम्
carry forward Maadhava maas, (Vaishaakha)
Aryamaa, Pulaha, Athaujaa, Praheti, Poonjikasthalee, Naarada, and Kacchaneera, these will carry forward Maadhava maas, the month of Vaishaakha.
मित्रोऽत्रि: पौरुषेयोऽथ तक्षको मेनका हहा: ।
रथस्वन इति ह्येते शुक्रमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥३५॥
मित्र:-अत्रि: पौरुषेय:-अथ
Mitra, Atri, Paurusheya, then,
तक्षक: मेनका हहा:
Takshaka, Menakaa, Hahaa,
रथस्वन इति हि-एते
Rathasvana, thus, indeed, these
शुक्र-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Shukra maas, month of Jyeshthaa, will run it
Mitra, Atri, Paurusheya, Takshaka, Menakaa, Hahaa, then, Rathasvana, thus, indeed, these will run the Shukra maas, the month of Jyeshthaa.
वसिष्ठॊ वरुणो रम्भा सहजन्यस्तथा हुहू: ।
शुक्रश्चित्रस्वनश्चैव शुचिमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥४६॥
वसिष्ठ: वरुण: रम्भा
Vashishtha, Varuna, Rambhaa,
सहजन्य:-तथा हुहू:
Sahajanya, and Huhoo
शुक्र:-चित्रस्वन:-च-एव
Shukra, Chitrasvana and also,
शुचि-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Shuchi maas, month of Aashaadha, will run this
Vashishtha, Varuna, Rambhaa, Sahajanya, and Huhoo, and Shukra, and also Chitrasvana, will run the Shuchi maas, the month of Aashaadha.
इन्द्रो विश्वावसु: श्रोता एलापत्रस्तथाङ्गिरा: ।
प्रम्लोचा राक्षसो वर्यो नभोमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥३७॥
इन्द्र: विश्वावसु: श्रोता
Indra, Vishwaavasu, Shrotaa,
एलापत्र:-तथा-अङ्गिरा:
Elaapatra, and Angiraa,
प्रम्लोचा राक्षस: वर्य:
Pramalocha, the Raakshasa Varya,
नभ:-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Nabha maas, Shraavana month, will take these
Indra, Vishwaavasu, Shrotaa, Elaapatra, and Angiraa, Pramalocha, the Raakshasa Varya, these will take the Nabha maas, the Shraavana month.
विवस्वानुग्रसेनश्च व्याघ्र आसारणो भृगु: ।
अनुम्लोचा शङ्खपालो नभस्याख्यं नयन्त्यमी ॥३८॥
विवस्वान्-उग्रसेन:-च
Vivasvaan, Ugrasena, and
व्याघ्र: आसारण: भृगु:
Vyaaghra, Aasaarana, Bhrigu,
अनुम्लोचा शङ्खपाल:
Anumlochaa Shankhapaala
नभस्य-आख्यम्
Nabha named, month of Bhaadrapada
नयन्ति-अमी
will take this
Vivasvaan, Ugrasena, Vyaaghra, Aasaarana, Bhrigu, Anumlochaa and Shankhapaala, will take this month named Nabha, the month of Bhaadrapada.
पूषा धनञ्जयो वात: सुषेण: सुरुचिस्तथा ।
घृताची गौतमश्चेति तपोमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥३९॥
पूषा धनञ्जय: वात:
Pooshaa, Dhananjaya, Vaata,
सुषेण: सुरुचि:-तथा
Sushena, Suruchi and
घृताची गौतम:-च-इति
Ghritaachi, Gautama and, thus,
तप:-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Tapa maas, month of Maagha will take it
Pooshaa, Dhananjaya, Vaata, Sushena, Suruchi, Ghritaachi and Gautama, thus, they will take forward the Tapa maas, the month of Maagha.
क्रतुर्वर्चा भरद्वाज: पर्जन्य: सेनजित्तथा ।
विश्व ऐरावतश्चैव तपस्याख्यं नयन्त्यमी ॥४०॥
क्रतु:-वर्चा भरद्वाज:
Kratu, Varchaa, Bharadvaaja,
पर्जन्य: सेनजित्-तथा
Parjanya, Senajit, and
विश्व ऐरावत:-च-एव
Vishva, Airaawata, and also,
तपस्या-आख्यम् नयन्ति-अमी
Tapasyaa named, Phaalguna month will take
Kratu, Varchaa, Bharadvaaja, Parjanya, Senajit, Vishva and also Airaawata, will take Tapasyaa named maas, the month of Phaalguna.
अथांशु: कश्यपस्तार्क्ष्य ऋतसेनस्तथोर्वशी ।
विद्युच्छत्रुर्महाशङ्ख: सहोमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥४१॥
अथ-अंशु: कश्यप:-तार्क्ष्य
then, Anshu, Kashyapa, Taarkshya,
ऋतसेन:-तथा-उर्वशी
Ritasena, and Urvashi,
विद्युच्छत्रु:-महाशङ्ख:
Vidyutshatru, Mahaashankha,
सहो-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Saho maas, month of Maargasheersha will run
Then, Anshu, Kashyapa, Taarkshya, Ritasena, and Urvashee, Vidyutshatru, Mahaashankha, these will run the Saho maas, the month of Maargasheersha.
भग: स्फूर्जोऽरिष्टनेमिरूर्ण आयुश्च पञ्चम: ।
कर्कोटक: पूर्वचित्ति: पुष्यमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥42॥
भग: स्फूर्ज:-अरिष्टनेमि:-
Bhaga, Sphoorja, Arishtanemi,
ऊर्ण आयु:-च पञ्चम:
Oorna, Aayu, and the five,
कर्कोटक: पूर्वचित्ति:
Karkotaka Poorvachitti
पुष्य मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Pushya maas, Pausa month will run
Bhaga, Sphoorja, Arishtanemi, Oorna, Aayu, the five and, Karkotaka, Poorvachitti, will run the Pushya maas, the Pausa month.
त्वष्टा ऋचीकतनय: कम्बलश्च तिलोत्तमा ।
ब्रह्मापेतोऽथ शतजिद् धृतराष्ट्र इषम्भरा: ॥४३॥
त्वष्टा ऋचीक-तनय:
Twashtaa, Richeeka's son, (Jamadagni),
कम्बल:-च तिलोत्तमा
Kambala, and Tilottamaa
ब्रह्मापेतो:-अथ शतजित्
Brahmaapeta, then, Shatajit,
धृतराष्ट्र: इषम्भरा:
Dhritaraashtra, of Isha maas, (Aashwin), fulfillers
Twashtaa, Richeeka's son, Jamadagni, Kambala, and Tilottamaa, Brahmaapeta, then, Shatajit, Dhritaraashtra, these are the fulfillers of the Isha maas, the month of Aashwin.
विष्णुरश्वतरो रम्भा सूर्यवर्चाश्च सत्यजित् ।
विश्वामित्रो मखापेत ऊर्जमासं नयन्त्यमी ॥४४॥
विष्णु:-अश्वतर: रम्भा
Vishnu, Ashvatara, Rambhaa,
सूर्यवर्चा:-च सत्यजित्
Sooryavarchaa, and Satyajit,
विश्वामित्र: मखापेत:
Vishwaamitra, Makhaapeta,
ऊर्ज-मासम् नयन्ति-अमी
Oorja maas, month of Kaartika, fulfil these
Vishnu, Ashvatara, Rambhaa, Sooryavarchaa, and Satyajit, Vishwaamitra, Makhaapeta, these fulfil the Oorja maas, month of Kaartika.
एता भगवतो विष्णोरादित्यस्य विभूतय: ।
स्मरतां सन्ध्ययोर्नृणां हरन्त्यंहो दिने दिने ॥४५॥
एता: भगवत: विष्णो:-
these are of Lord Vishnu
आदित्यस्य विभूतय:
The Sun's glories,
स्मरताम् सन्ध्ययो:-नृणाम्
remembering in morning and evening, of men
हरन्ति-अंह: दिने दिने
steal away the sins, day by day
These are the glories of Lord Vishnu, The Sun. The men who remember them morning and evening, day after day, they steal away their sins.
द्वादशस्वपि मासेषु देवोऽसौ षड्भिरस्य वै ।
चरन् समन्तात्तनुते परत्रेह च सन्मतिम् ॥४६॥
द्वादशसु-अपि मासेषु
in twelve even months,
देव:-असौ षड्भि:-अस्य वै
The Lord, this, with six of His indeed,
चरन् समन्तात्-तनुते
coursing round, spreads
परत्र-इह च सत्-मतिम्
hereafter, here and good sense
The Lord, This, coursing round the universe with His six attendents, indeed, spreads good sense in His devotees.
सामर्ग्यजुर्भिस्तल्लिङ्गैरृषय: संस्तुवन्त्यमुम् ।
गन्धर्वास्तं प्रगायन्ति नृत्यन्त्यप्सरसोऽग्रत: ॥४७॥
साम-ऋग्-यजुर्भि:-तत्-लिङ्गै:-
with Saama, Rig, Yajur, His glories,
ऋषय: संस्तुवन्ति-अमुम्
the sages, extol Him,
गन्धर्वा:-तम् प्रगायन्ति
Gandharvas, of Him sing,
नृत्यन्ति-अप्सरस:-अग्रत:
dance the Apsaras, in front
The sages, forming an entourage extol Him with the hymns of Saama, Rig and Yajur, Vedas, which are His glories only, the Gandharvas sing of Him, and the Apsaraas dance in front of Him.
उन्नह्यन्ति रथं नागा ग्रामण्यो रथयोजका: ।
चोदयन्ति रथं पृष्ठे नैर्ऋता बलशालिन: ॥४८॥
उन्नह्यन्ति रथम् नागा:
tightly knit together the chariot, the Naagas,
ग्रामण्य: रथ-योजका:
the Yakshakas, chariot keep ready,
चोदयन्ति रथम् पृष्ठे
push the chariot from back
नैर्ऋता: बल-शालिन:
the Raakshashas, of great strength
The Naagas keep the chariot tightly knit together, the Yakshas keep the chariot ready for use, the Raakshashas, with great strength, push the chariot from behind.
बालखिल्या: सहस्राणि षष्टिर्ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमला: ।
पुरतोऽभिमुखं यान्ति स्तुवन्ति स्तुतिभिर्विभुम् ॥४९॥
बालखिल्या: सहस्राणि
Baalakhilyaas, thousands
षष्टि:-ब्रह्म-ऋषय:-अमला:
sixty, divine sages pure,
पुरत:-अभिमुखम् यान्ति
in front, facing proceed,
स्तुवन्ति स्तुतिभि:-विभुम्
extol with hymns The Lord
Sixty thousand of the Baalakhilyaas, the pure divine sages, walk in front, facing The Lord, and extol Him by singing hymns of His praises.
एवं ह्यनादिनिधनो भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ।
कल्पे कल्पे स्वमात्मानं व्यूह्य लोकानवत्यज: ॥५०॥
एवम् हि-अनादि-निधन:
in this manner only, beginning-less, end-less
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
The Lord, Shree Hari, The Mighty
कल्पे कल्पे स्वम्-आत्मानम्
in every Kalpa, His own Self
व्यूह्य लोकान्-अवति-अज:
dividing, the worlds protects, The birth-less
In this manner, The Lord, Shree Hari, The Almighty, Who is beginning-less and end-less and birth-less, in Kalpa after Kalpa, dividing Himself, into twelve forms, protects the worlds.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां द्वादशस्कन्धे आदित्यव्यूहविवरणं नाम एकादश: अध्याय: ॥११॥
Thus ends the eleventh discourse entitled 'A description of the Sun-god (presiding under different names over the twelve months of a year) with His entourage' in Book Twelve of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
