मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
निशम्यात्मभुवा गीतं कारणं शङ्कयोज्झिता: ।
तत: सर्वे न्यवर्तन्त त्रिदिवाय दिवौकस: ॥१॥
निशम्य-आत्मभुवा
having heard from Brahmaa
गीतम् कारणम्
the explained reason (for the darkness)
शङ्कया-उज्झिता:
from doubt (were) rid
तत: सर्वे: न्यवर्तन्त
then they all returned to
त्रिदिवाय दिवौकस:
the heavens, the gods
The gods heard what Brahmaa told them about the cause of the darkness. They were rid of all doubts, and all of them then returned to the heavens.
दितिस्तु भर्तुरादेशादपत्यपरिशङ्किनी ।
पूर्णे वर्षशते साध्वी पुत्रौ प्रसुषुवे यमौ ॥२॥
दिति:-तु भर्तु:-आदेशात्-
Diti, then, by (her) husband's instructions
अपत्य-परिशङ्किनी
of the children apprehensive
पूर्णे वर्ष-शते साध्वी
at the completion of years hundred, the pious one,
पुत्रौ प्रसुषुवे यमौ
sons gave birth twins
Diti, who was very apprehensive of her children, on the instruction of her husband, the pious lady gave birth to twin sons, at the end of a hundred years.
उत्पाता बहवस्तत्र निपेतुर्जायमानयो: ।
दिवि भुव्यन्तरिक्षे च लोकस्योरुभयावहा: ॥३॥
उत्पाता: बहव:-तत्र
calamities many were there
निपेतु:-जायमानयो:
descended, as were born the two
दिवि भुवि-अन्तरिक्षे च
in the heaven, on the earth, and in the space
लोकस्य-उरु-भय-आवहा:
to the world great fear causing
As the two descended, and were born, great calamities befell the heaven, the earth and in the space, causing great fear to the world.
सहाचला भुवश्चेलुर्दिश: सर्वा: प्रजज्वलु: ।
सोल्काश्चाशनय: पेतु: केतवश्चार्तिहेतव: ॥४॥
सह-अचला भुव:-चेलु:
along with the mountains, the earth shook
दिश: सर्वा: प्रजज्वलु:
the quarters all burned
स-उल्का:-च-अशनय: पेतु:
with meteors and thunderbolts descended
केतव:-च-आर्ति-हेतव:
comets and grief bearing
The earth shook along with the mountains, all the quarters were ablaze, thunderbolts descended with meteors and also grief bearing comets.
ववौ वायु: सुदु:स्पर्श: फूत्कारानीरयन्मुहु: ।
उन्मूलयन्नगपतीन्वात्यानीको रजोध्वज: ॥५॥
ववौ वायु: सुदु:स्पर्श:
blew wind, unpleasant to touch
फूत्कारान्-ईरयन्-मुहु:
hissing sounds making again and again
उन्मूलयन्-नगपतीन्-
uprooting gigantic trees
वात्या-अनीक: रज:-ध्वज:
storm being its army and dust its flag
A fierce wind, unpleasent to touch blew, again and again making a hissing sound, uprooting gigantic trees, strom being its army and dust its flag.
उद्धसत्तडिदम्भोदघटया नष्टभागणे ।
व्योम्नि प्रविष्टतमसा न स्म व्यादृश्यते पदम् ॥६॥

flashing lightening
अम्भोद-घटया
by clouds' masses
नष्ट-भागणे
covered the luminous stars
व्योम्नि प्रविष्ट-तमसा
in the sky spread darkness
न स्म व्यादृश्यते पदम्
not was seen anything
There were flashes of lightening in the masses of the clouds which covered the luminous stars in the sky and spread darkness, because of which nothing could be seen.
चुक्रोश विमना वार्धिरुदूर्मि: क्षुभितोदर: ।
सोदपानाश्च सरितश्चौक्षुभु: शुष्कपङ्कजा: ॥७॥
चुक्रोश विमना वार्धि:-
wailed the sorrowful ocean
उदूर्मि: क्षुभित-उदर:
with high waves (there was) turmoil in its inside
सोदपाना:-च सरित:
lakes and rivers
चुक्षुभु: शुष्क-पङ्कजा:
were agitated, withered were the lotuses
The sorrowful ocean wailed, and its high waves created turmoil in its insides, creating commotion in the creatures therein. The lakes and rivers were agitated, and the lotuses withered.
मुहु: परिधयोऽभूवन् सराह्वो: शशिसूर्ययो: ।
निर्घाता: रथनिर्ह्रादा विवरेभ्य: प्रजज्ञिरे ॥८॥
मुहु: परिधय:-अभूवन्
again and again halos appeared
स-राह्वो: शशि-सूर्ययो:
of Raahu, around the moon and sun
निर्घाता: रथ-निर्ह्रादा:
there was thunder without clouds, the rattle of chariots
विवरेभ्य: प्रजज्ञिरे
from the caves came out
On the Sun and the Moon, misty halos created by Raahu, were seen as in the eclipses. There was thunder without any clouds and the sound of the rattle of chariot's wheels emerged from the caves.
अन्तर्ग्रामेषु मुखतो वमन्त्यो वह्निमुल्बणम् ।
शृगालोलूकटङ्कारै: प्रणेदुरशिवं शिवा: ॥९॥
अन्त:-ग्रामेषु मुखत:
inside the villages, from (their) mouths
वमन्त्य: वह्निम्-उल्बणम्
spitting fire flames
शृगाल-उलूक-टङ्कारै:
by jackals' and owls' cries
प्रणेदु:-अशिवम् शिवा:
yelled inauspiciously the she jackals
Inside the villages, the she jackals yelled inauspisiouly spitting out fire flames from their mouths, the resounding was coupled by the cries of jackals and owls.
सङ्गीतवद्रोदनवदुन्नमय्य शिरोधराम् ।
व्यमुञ्चन् विविधा वाचो ग्रामसिंहास्ततस्तत: ॥१०॥
सङ्गीत-वत्-रोदन-वत्-
singing like, wailing like,
उन्नमय्य शिरोधराम्
raising (their) necks
व्यमुञ्चन् विविधा: वाच:
gave out various sounds
ग्रामसिंहा:-तत:-तत:
the dogs here and there
Here and there, the dogs with their necks raised, gave out cries and various sounds, like singing and wailing.
खराश्च कर्कशै: क्षत्त: खुरैर्घ्नन्तोधरातलम् ।
खार्काररभसा मत्ता: पर्यधावन् वरूथस: ॥११॥
खरा:-च कर्कशै: क्षत्त:
donkeys and in shrill, O Vidura!
खुरै:-घ्नन्त: धरा-तलम्
by hoofs scratching, the earth's surface
खार्कार-रभसा मत्ता:
braying wildly intoxicated
पर्यधावन् वरूथस:
ran about in groups
The donkeys in a shrill cry brayed wildly, and scrached the surface of the earth with their hoofs, and ran here and there in groups as though intoxicated.
रुदन्तो रासभत्रस्ता नीडादुदपतन् खगा: ।
घोषेऽरण्ये च पशव: शकृन्मूत्रमकुर्वत ॥१२॥
रुदन्त: रासभ त्रस्ता:
by the crying donkey's, afraid
नीडात्-उदपतन् खगा:
from (their) nests, flew away the birds
घोषे-अरण्ये च पशव:
in the sheds and the forest, and the animals
शकृत्-मूत्रम्-अकुर्वत
stool and urine passed
Frightened by the crying of the donkeys, the birds flew from their nests shrieking. In the woods and in the cow-sheds, the cows passed dung and urine.
गावोऽत्रसन्नसृग्दोहास्तोयदा: पूयवर्षिण: ।
व्यरुदन्देवलिङ्गानि द्रुमा: पेतुर्विनानिलम् ॥१३॥
गाव:-अत्रसन्-असृक्-दोहा:
the cows were terrified, blood milked
तोयदा: पूय-वर्षिण:
water yielders (clouds) pus rained
व्यरुदन्-देव-लिङ्गानि
wept the gods statues
द्रुमा: पेतु:-विना-अनिलम्
the trees fell, without a storm
The cows were terrified and yielded blood when milked. The water yielders, the clouds, rained pus. The trees fell without storm.
ग्रहान् पुण्यतमानन्ये भगणांश्चापि दीपिता: ।
अतिचेरुर्वक्रगत्या युयुधुश्च परस्परम् ॥१४॥
ग्रहान् पुण्यतमान्-अन्ये
the auspicious planets, the others
भगणान्-च-अपि दीपिता:
and stars outshining
अति-चेरु:-वक्र-गत्या
overcame by retrograde course
युयुधु:-च परस्परम्
and came into conflict with one another
The inauspicious planets outshone the auspicious planets, and the stars and overcame them by retrograde course and came into conflict with one another.
दृष्ट्वान्यांश्च महोत्पातानतत्तत्वविद: प्रजा: ।
ब्रह्मपुत्रानृते भीता मेनिरे विश्वसम्प्लवम् ॥१५॥
दृष्ट्वा-अन्यान्-च
seeing other and
महा-उत्पातान्
great (evil) calamities
अतत्-तत्व-विद: प्रजा:
not that secret knowing people
ब्रह्म-पुत्रान्-ऋते
Brahma's sons except
भीता: मेनिरे
fearful believed
विश्व-सम्प्लवम्
the world's dissolution
The people were full of fear seeing such and other evil calamities. Except for the sons of Brahmaa, no one knew the secret and cause of all this, and so they believed that the dissolution of the world was near.
तावादिदैत्यौ सहसा व्यज्यमानात्मपौरुषौ ।
ववृधातेऽश्मसारेण कायेनाद्रिपती इव ॥१६॥
तौ-आदि-दैत्यौ सहसा
those two the earliest demons, suddenly
व्यज्यमाना-आत्म-पौरुषौ
revealing their power
ववृधाते-अश्म-सारेण
grew, in steel like
कायेन-अद्रिपती इव
body mountain like
Those two earliest demons suddenly grew into steel like bodies like mountains and revealed their former power.
दिविस्पृशौ हेमकिरीटकोटिभिर्निरुद्धकाष्ठौ स्फुरदङ्गदाभुजौ ।
गां कम्पयन्तौ चरणै: पदे पदे कट्या सुकाञ्च्यार्कमतीत्य तस्थतु: ॥१७॥
दिवि-स्पृशौ
the skies touching
हेम-किरीट-कोटिभि:-
with (their) golden crowns' crests
निरुद्ध-काष्ठौ
covering by (their) hugeness
स्फुरत्-अङ्गद-आभुजौ
their arms dazzling with the shine of armlets
गां कम्पयन्तौ
the earth trembling
चरणै: पदे पदे
by (their) feet on every step
कट्या सुकाञ्च्या-
by the waist band of gold
अर्कम्-अतीत्य तस्थतु:
the sun surpassing, remained
The skies were covered by their hugeness, and touched by the crests of their golden crowns. Their arms dazzelled by the brilliance, of their golden armlets. The earth trembled by every step of their feet. The brlliance of their golden waistband surpassed the Sun. They remaind thus.
प्रजापतिर्नाम तयोरकार्षीद् य: प्राक् स्वदेहाद्यमयोरजायत।
तं वै हिरण्यकशिपुं विदु: प्रजा यं तं हिरण्याक्षमसूत साग्रत: ॥१८॥
प्रजापति:-नाम तयो:-अकार्षीत्
Prajaapati, names to them gave
य: प्राक् स्व-देहात्-
who first from own body
यमयो:-अजायत
of the twins was born
तम् वै हिरण्यकशिपुम्
him indeed, as Hiranyakashipu
विदु: प्रजा: यम् तम्
know the people, him that
हिरण्याक्षम्-सूत सा-अग्रत:
(known as) Hiranyaaksha, gave birth she later
Prajaapati gave names to both of them. He who came from his body first, is known to the people as Hiranyakashipu, and he who is known as Hiranyaaksha, she gave birth to him later.
चक्रे हिरण्यकशिपुर्दोर्भ्यां ब्रह्मचरेण च ।
वशे सपालांल्लोकांस्त्रीनकुतोमृत्युरुद्धत: ॥१९॥
चक्रे हिरण्यकशिपु:-दोर्भ्याम्
achieved Hiranyakashipu, by (his) two arms'
ब्रह्म-चरेण च
and by Brahmaa's boon
वशे सपालान्
the control along with the guardians
लोकान्-त्रीन्-
the spheres three
अकुत:-मृत्यु:-
having overcome death
उद्धत:
was bloated with pride
Hiranyakashipu achieved the control of the three spheres along with their gaurdians, by the valour of his two arms, and by Brahmaa's boon having overcome the fear of death, he was bloated with pride.
हिरण्याक्षोऽनुजस्तस्य प्रिय: प्रीतिकृदन्वहम् ।
गदापाणिर्दिवं यातो युयुत्सुर्मृगयन् रणम् ॥२०॥
हिरण्याक्ष:-अनुज:-तस्य
Hiranyaaksha, the younger brother
प्रिय: प्रीतिकृत्-अन्वहम्
his dear, his dear doing always
गदा-पाणि:-दिवम् यात:
maze in hand, to the heaven went
युयुत्सु:-मृगयन् रणम्
willing to fight, looking for, battle
His dear younger brother Hiranyaaksha, who was always eager to do his will, went to the heaven, looking for someone willing to fight with him in the battle.
तं वीक्ष्य दु:सहजवं रणत्काञ्चननूपुरम् ।
वैजयन्त्या स्रजा जुष्टमंसन्यस्तमहागदम् ॥२१॥
तम् वीक्ष्य दु:सह-जवम्
him seeing, of unbearable speed
रणत्-काञ्चन-नूपुरम्
tinkling of golden anklets
वैजयन्त्या स्रजा जुष्टम्-
by a Vaijayanti garland adorned
अंस-न्यस्त-महा-गदम्
on shoulder placed a huge mace
His speed was unbearable. His golden anklets were tinkling. He was adorned with a Vaijayanti garlend, and he was carrying a huge mace placed on his shoulder.
मनोवीर्यवरोत्सिक्तमसृण्यमकुतोभयम् ।
भीता निलिल्यिरे देवास्तार्क्ष्यत्रस्ता इवाहय: ॥२२॥
मन:-वीर्य-वर-उत्सिक्तम्
with his own strength, and by the boon bloated (with pride)
असृण्यम्-अकुतो-भयम्
fierce, devoid of all fear
भीता: निलिल्यिरे देवा:-
afraid, hid the gods
तार्क्ष्य-त्रस्ता: इव-अहय:
by Gaduda afraid, like the snakes
His pride was bloated because of his own strength and by the boon given by Brahmaa. The gods hid themselves for fear of him, just as the snakes hide for the fear of Gaduda.
स वै तिरोहितान् दृष्ट्वा महसा स्वेन दैत्यराट् ।
सेन्द्रान्देवगणान् क्षीबानपश्यन् व्यनदद् भृशम् ॥२३॥
स: वै तिरोहितान् दृष्ट्वा
he, then, vanished seeing
महसा स्वेन दैत्यराट्
by great (might) his, the Daitya chief
स-इन्द्रान्-देवगणान्
along with Indra, the gods all
क्षीबान्-अपश्यन् व्यनदद् भृशम्
afraid seeing, roared fiercely
He, then, the Demon chief, saw that the group of gods along with Indra had vanished being afraid of his great might. Then, he roared fiercely.
ततो निवृत्त: क्रीडिष्यन् गम्भीरं भीमनिस्वनम् ।
विजगाहे महासत्त्वो वार्धिं मत्त इव द्विप: ॥२४॥
तत: निवृत्त: क्रीडिष्यन्
from there returned playfully
गम्भीरम् भीम-निस्वनम्
the deep and fiercely roaring
विजगाहे महा-सत्त्वो वार्धिम्
entered the mighty ocean
मत्त इव द्विप:
intoxicated like elephant
The great mighty one returned from there and playfully entered the deep and fiercely roaring ocean, like an intoxicated elephant.
तस्मिन् प्रविष्टं वरुणस्य सैनिका यादोगणा: सन्निधिय: ससाध्वसा: ।
अहन्यमाना अपि तस्य वर्चसा प्रधर्षिता दूरतरं प्रदुद्रुवु: ॥२५॥
तस्मिन् प्रविष्टम्
his having entered
वरुणस्य सैनिका:
Varuna's (the god of water) attendants
यादोगणा: सन्निधिय:
the aquatic creatures were puzzled
ससाध्वसा: अहन्यमाना अपि
by fear, not being killed also
तस्य वर्चसा प्रधर्षिता:
by his might scared
दूरतरम् प्रदुद्रुवु:
far away ran away
When he entered, the ocean, the attendents of Varuna, the god of water, and the acquatic creatures were full of fear of his might, and even if they were not killed, they were scared and ran far away.
स वर्षपूगानुदधौ महाबलश्चरन्महोर्मीञ्छ्वसनेरितान्मुहु: ।
मौर्व्याभिजघ्ने गदया विभावरीमासेदिवांस्तात पुरीं प्रचेतस: ॥२६॥
स: वर्ष-पूगानु-उदधौ
he for many years, in the ocean
महाबल:-चरन्-
the mighty one roaming
महा-ऊर्मीन्-श्वसन्-
big waves by his breath
ईरितान्-मुहु:
rising, again and again
मौर्व्या-अभिजघ्ने गदया
by (his) iron, beat about, the maze
विभावरीम्-आसेदिवान्
to Vibhaavaree reached
तात पुरीम् प्रचेतस:
O Vidura! the city of Varuna
O Vidura! For many years, the mighty one roamed about in the ocean. The big waves which rose by his breath, he beat about with his iron maze again and again and reached Vibhaavaree the city of Vauna.
तत्रोपलभ्यासुरलोकपालकं यादोगणानामृषभं प्रचेतसम् ।
स्मयन् प्रलब्धुं प्रणिपत्य नीचवज्जगाद मे देह्यधिराज संयुगम् ॥२७॥
तत्र-उपलभ्य-
there, finding
असुर-लोक-पालकम्
the demon world's guardian
यादोगणानाम्-ऋषभम्
and of the aquatic creatures lord
प्रचेतसम् स्मयन् प्रलब्धम्
Prachetas (Varuna) smiling sneeringly
प्रणिपत्य नीच-वत्-जगाद
and bowing like a low man, said
मे देहि-अधिराज संयुगम्
to me give O lord! Battle
There he found the gaurdian of the demon's world, and the lord of the acquatic creatures, Prachetas (Varuna). He bowed to him like a lowly man and smiling snearingly said, 'O lord! Give me battle.'
त्वं लोकपालोऽधिपतिर्बृहच्छ्रवा वीर्यापहो दोर्मदवीरमानिनाम् ।
विजित्य लोकेऽखिलदैत्यदानवान् यद्राजसूयेन पुरा यजत्प्रभो ॥२८॥
त्वम् लोकपाल:
you are the sphere's guardian
अधिपति:-बृहत्-श्रवा:
and ruler of great fame
वीर्य-अपह:
valour taker away
दोर्मद-वीर-मानिनाम्
of conceited warriors arrogant
विजित्य लोके-
conquering in the world
अखिल-दैत्य-दानवान्
the whole Daitya and Daanava's
यत्-राजसूयेन
that Raajasooya (sacrifice)
पुरा- अयजत्-प्रभो
long back performed O lord!
O Lord! You are the gaurdian of the sphere, and a ruler of great fame. You have taken away the valour of arrogant and concieted warriors. Long back, having conquered, in the world all the Daityas and Daanawas, you had performed the Raajasooya sacrifice.
स एवमुत्सिक्तमदेन विद्विषा दृढं प्रलब्धो भगवानपां पति: ।
रोषं समुत्थं शमयन् स्वया धिया व्यवोचदङ्गोपशमं गता वयम् ॥२९॥
स: एवम्-उत्सिक्त-मदेन
he thus, by the unceased pride
विद्विषा दृढम् प्रलब्ध:
of the enemy, vey much jeered
भगवान्-अपाम् पति:
the lord of the waters
रोषम् समुत्थम् शमयन्
the anger rising controlling
स्वया धिया व्यवोचत्-
by his mind said
अङ्ग-उपशमम् गता वयम्
body weak has become mine
The lord of the waters was thus well jeered by the enemy whose pride had swelled very much. His anger started to rise, but he controlled it by his mind, and said, "I am getting weak in the body".
पश्यामि नान्यं पुरुषात्पुरातनाद् य: संयुगे त्वां रणमार्गकोविदम् ।
आराधयिष्यत्यसुरर्षभेहि तं मनस्विनो यं गृणते भवादृशा: ॥३०॥
पश्यामि न-अन्यम्
(I) do not see any other
पुरुषात्-पुरातनात्-
(than) the Person ancient
य: संयुगे त्वाम्
who in battle you,
रणमार्ग-कोविदम्
in battle skilled
आराधयिष्यति-असुर-ऋषभ-
will satisfy O Asura Chief!
एहि तम् मनस्विन:
go to Him the learned
यम् गृणते भवादृशा:
whom worship like yourself
O Asura Chief! I do not see anyone beside the Person ancient, (Vishnu), who can satisfy you, who are skilled in battle, in a combat. So, go to Him, Whom learned people like you worship.
तं वीरमारादभिपद्य विस्मय: शयिष्यसे वीरशये श्वभिर्वृत: ।
यस्त्वद्विधानामसतां प्रशान्तये रूपाणि धत्ते सदनुग्रहेच्छया ॥३१॥
तम् वीरम्-
Him the Brave
आरात्-अभिपद्य
near to reaching
विस्मय:
devoid of pride
शयिष्यसे वीरशये
will lie (dead) on the battle field
श्वभि:-वृत:
by dogs surrounded
य:-त्वत्-विधानाम्-
Who for your likes
असताम् प्रशान्तये
wicked to exterminate
रूपाणि धत्ते
forms assumes
सत्-अनुग्रह-इच्छया
the virtuous to grace wanting
Reaching Him, the Brave One, you will be devoid of all pride, and will lie dead on the battle field surrounded by dogs. To show His grace to the virtuous He takes various forms and also exterminates wicked, the likes of you.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीय: स्कन्धे हिरण्याक्ष दिग्विजये सप्तदश: अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥१७॥
Thus ends the seventeenth discourse in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
