मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
तदेवमाकर्ण्य जलेशभाषितं महामनास्तद्विगणय्य दुर्मद: ।

हरेर्विदित्वा गतिमङ्ग नारदाद् रसातलं निर्विविशे त्वरान्वित: ॥१॥


तत्-एवम्-आकर्ण्य
that thus hearing
जलेश-भाषितम्
by the lord of the waters, Varuna, said
महामना:-
the conceited
तत्-विगणय्य दुर्मद:
that undermining, the arrogant one
हरे:-विदित्वा गतिम्-
of the Lord knowing the whereabouts
अङ्ग नारदात्
O Dear! (Vidura) from Naarada
रसातलम् निर्विविशे
in the depths entered
त्वरा-अन्वित:
in haste taken

The concieted and arrogant Daitya, hearing the words of the lord of the waters, Varuna, undermined them, and coming to know about the whereabouts of the Lord, from Naarada, taken by haste, he entered the depths.


ददर्श तत्राभिजितं धराधरं प्रोन्नीयमानावनिमग्रदंष्ट्रया ।

मुष्णन्तमक्ष्णा स्वरुचोऽरुणश्रिया जहास चाहो वनगोचरो मृग: ॥२॥


ददर्श तत्र-अभिजितम्
saw there, the all victorious
धराधरम् प्रोन्नीयमा-अवनिम्-
divine Boar, lifting the earth
अग्र-दंष्ट्रया
on the points of the tusks
मुष्णन्तम्-अक्ष्णा
wiping away by the eyes
स्वरुच:-अरुण-श्रिया
his splendour by red eyes
जहास च-अहो
laughed and (said) Oh!
वनगोचर: मृग:
the wild animal

There he saw the all victorious divine Boar lifting the earth on the points of His tusks, whose red eyes robbed the splendour of the demon. He laughed and said, 'Oh! A wild animal.'


आहैनमेह्यज्ञ महीं विमुञ्च नो रसौकसां विश्वसृजेयमर्पिता ।

न स्वस्ति यास्यस्यनया ममेक्षत: सुराधमासादितसूकराकृते ॥३॥


आह-ऐनम्-एहि-अज्ञ
said to Him, come O fool!
महीम् विमुञ्च
The earth leave
न: रसौकसाम्
to us the ocean dwellers
विश्वसृजा-इयम्-अर्पिता
by Brahmaa this is given
न स्वस्ति यास्यसि-
not easily will go
अनया मम-ईक्षत:
with her, in my sight
सुर-अधम-
god worthless!
आसादित-सूकर-आकृते
assuming a boar's form

He, Hiranyaaksha said to Him, 'Come O Fool! Leave the earth, she was given to us, the dwellers of the oceans, by the Maker of the Universe, Bahmaa. You will not go from here with her unscathed as I look on. O worthless god, assuming the form of a boar!'


त्वं न: सपत्नैरभवाय किं भृतो यो मायया हन्त्यसुरान् परोक्षजित् ।

त्वां योगमायाबलमल्पपौरुषं संस्थाप्य मूढ प्रभृजे सुहृच्छुच: ॥४॥


त्वम् न: सपत्नै:-
you, by our enemies (the gods)
अभवाय किम् भृत:
extermination, is it reared
य: मायया हन्ति-असुरान्
who by deceit, kills the demons
परोक्ष-जित्
hidingly, and wins (them)
त्वाम् योग-माया-बलम्-
you, (whose) power is Yoga Maayaa
अल्प-पौरुषम् संस्थाप्य
(and who) is of little prowess
मूढ प्रभृजे सुहृत्-शुच:
O Fool! (I will) wipe off, and (my) friends will please

You are, is it, reared by our enemies, the gods, who by deciet hidingly win and kill the demons. Your only strength is Yoga Maaya and you have but little prowess. O Fool! I will wipe you off and please my friends.


त्वयि संस्थिते गदया शीर्णशीर्षण्यस्मद्भुजच्युतया ये च तुभ्यम् ।

बलिं हरन्त्यृषयो ये च देवा: स्वयं सर्वे न भविष्यन्त्यमूला: ॥५॥


त्वयि संस्थिते
by your being dead
गदया शीर्ण-शीर्षणि-
by the mace smashed head
अस्मत्-भुज-च्युतया
by our arms hurled
ये च तुभ्यम्
those and for you
बलिम् हरन्ति-
offerings bring
ऋषय: ये च देवा:
the sage and those gods
स्वयम् सर्वे
themselves all
न भविष्यन्ति-अमूला:
will not be being rootless

When you die because of your head being smashed by the mace hurled by our arm, all those sages and those gods who worship you and bring offerings to you, will themselves perish having become rootless.


स तुद्यमानोऽरिदुरूक्ततोमरैदंष्ट्राग्रगां गामुपलक्ष्य भीताम्

तोदं मृषन्निरगादम्बुमध्याद् ग्राहाहत: सकरेणुर्यथेभ: ॥६॥


स: तुद्यमान:-
He tormented
अरि-दुरूक्त-तोमरै:-
by enemy's abusive spears
दंष्ट्र-अग्रगाम्
on the tusks points placed
गाम्-उपलक्ष्य भीताम्
the earth seeing frightened
तोदम् मृषन्-
the pain bearing
निरगाद्-अम्बु-मध्यात्-
came out from the waters middle
ग्राह-आहत:
by the alligator assailed
सकरेणु:-यथा-इभ:
with the female elephant like the elephant

He was tormented by the spear like abusive speech of the enemy. But, seeing that the earth placed on the point of His tusks was frightened, He bore the pain and came out of the middle of the waters, like an elephant assailed by the alligator, comes out with the female elephant.


तं नि:सरन्तं सलिलादनुद्रुतो हिरण्यकेशो द्विरदं यथा झष: ।

करालदंष्ट्रोऽशनिनिस्वनोऽब्रवीद् गतह्रियां किं त्वसताम् विगर्हितम् ॥७॥


तम् नि:सरन्तम्
to Him coming out
सलिलात्-अनुद्रुत:
from the waters, followed
हिरण्यकेश:
by the golden haired (Hiranyaaksha)
द्विरदम् यथा झष:
elephant as by the alligator
कराल-दंष्ट्र:
fierce toothed
अशनि-निस्वन:-अब्रवीत्
thunder breathing out, said
गत-ह्रियाम् किम्
shameless what not
तु-असताम्
indeed the wretched
विगर्हितम्
reproachful do

The golden haired, Hiranyaaksha, followed Him as He came out of the waters, just as the alligator follows the elephant. The fierce toothed demon, breathing out thunder, said to Him, 'What repraochful deeds do the shameless wretched do not do?'


स गामुदस्तात्सलिलस्य गोचरे विन्यस्य तस्यामदधात्स्वसत्त्वम् ।

अभिष्टुतो विश्वसृजा प्रसूनैरापूर्यमाणो विबुधै: पश्यतोऽरे: ॥८॥


स: गाम्-
He, the earth
उदस्तात्-सलिलस्य
above the water
गोचरे विन्यस्य
in His sight placed
तस्याम्-अदधात्-
in her transferred
स्व-सत्त्वम्
His own energy
अभिष्टुत: विश्वसृजा
was praised by Brahmaa
प्रसूनै:-आपूर्यमाण:
by flowers showered
विबुधै: पश्यत:-अरे:
by the gods, as looked on by the enemy

He placed the earth above the waters within His sight and transferred His own energy into Her. He was praised by Brahmaa and was showered with flowers by the gods, even as the enemy looked on.


परानुषक्तं तपनीयोपकल्पं महागदं काञ्चनचित्रदंशम् ।

मर्माण्यभीक्ष्णं प्रतुदन्तं दुरुक्तै: प्रचण्डमन्यु: प्रहसंस्तं बभाषे ॥९॥


पर-अनुषक्तम्
coming after (him)
तपनीय-उपकल्पम्
golden ornaments adorning
महा-गदम्
huge mace holding
काञ्चन-चित्र-दंशम्
golden queer armour
मर्माणि-अभीक्ष्णम्
hearts tearing
प्रतुदन्तम् दुरुक्तै:
with abusive words
प्रचण्ड-मन्यु:
fiercely enraged
प्रहसन्-तम्-बभाषे
laughingly to him said

The Boar incarnated Lord, fiercely enraged, laughingly said to him, who was adorning golden ornaments, holding a huge mace, wearing a queer golden armour, came after him, speaking in heart tearing abusive words.


श्री भगवानुवाच -
The Lord said -
सत्यं वयं भो वनगोचरा मृगा युष्मद्विधान्मृगये ग्रामसिंहान् ।

न मृत्युपाशै: प्रतिमुक्तस्य वीरा विकत्थनं तव गृह्वन्त्यभद्र ॥१०॥


सत्यम् वयम् भो
it is true, we, O
वनगोचरा: मृगा:
are wild beasts
युष्मत्-विधान्-
you the likes
मृगये ग्रामसिंहान्
look for dogs
न मृत्यु-पाशै:
not by death's cords
प्रति-मुक्तस्य वीरा:
bound, the brave
विकत्थनम् तव
bragging yours
गृह्वन्ति-अभद्र
bother, Wretch

O wretch! It is true that we are wild beasts and keep looking for dogs like you. The brave do not bother about the braggings of the likes of you, who are bound by the cord of death.


एते वयं न्यासहरा रसौकसां गतह्रियो गदया द्रावितास्ते ।

तिष्ठामहेऽद्यापि कथञ्चिदाजौ स्थेयं क्व यामो बलिनोत्पाद्य वैरम् ॥११॥


एते वयम्
these we
न्यास-हरा: रसौकसाम्
the charge stealers of the depths
गत-ह्रिय:
devoid of shame
द्राविता:-ते
are chased by you
तिष्ठामहे-अद्य-अपि
stay now even
कथञ्चित्-आजौ
somehow in battle
स्थेयम् क्व याम:
stand, where to go
बलिना-उत्पाद्य वैरम्
with powerful (having) taken animosity

Here, these we are the stealers of the charge of the dwellers of the depths. Chased by you, devoid of shame, somehow, even now we stand and stay in batlle, for where can we go having taken up enimosity with the powerful.


त्वं पद्रथानां किल यूथपाधिपो घटस्व नोऽस्वस्तय आश्वनूह: ।

संस्थाप्य चास्मान् प्रमृजाश्रु स्वकानां य: स्वां प्रतिज्ञां नातिपिपर्त्यसभ्य: ॥१२॥


त्वम् पद-रथानाम्
you (are) of the foot soldiers'
किल यूथ-अधिप:
indeed, leaders' leader
घटस्व
make it happen
न:-अस्वस्तये
our misfortune
आश्वनूह:
undoubtedly
संस्थाप्य च-अस्मान्
killing and us
प्रमृज-अश्रु: स्वकानाम्
wiping the tears of own people
य: स्वाम्-प्रतिज्ञाम्
who own promise
न-अतिपिपर्ति-
does not fulfil
असभ्य:
(is) uncultured

Indeed, you are the leader of the leaders of the foot soldiers. Conduct our misfortune and killing us, wipe the tears of your own people. One who does not fulfil ones promise, is uncultured.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
सोऽधिक्षिप्तो भगवता प्रलब्धश्च रुषा भृशम् ।

आजहारोल्बणं क्रोधं क्रीड्यमानोऽहिराडिव ॥१३॥


स:-अधिक्षिप्त: भगवता
he insulted by The Lord
प्रलब्ध:-च रुषा भृशम्
sneered and, by anger great
आजहार-उल्बणम् क्रोधम्
(was) full of boiling anger
क्रीड्यमान:-अहिराट्-इव
being played with, a serpent like

The Lord insulted him and sneered at him, due to great anger. He also was full of boiling anger like a serpant who is played with and poked at.


सृजन्नमर्षित:: श्वासान्मन्युप्रचलितेन्द्रिय: ।

आसाद्य तरसा दैत्यो गदयाभ्यहनद्-हरिम् ॥१४॥


सृजन्-अमर्षित: श्वासान्-
producing wrathful hissings (breathings)
मन्यु-प्रचलित्-इन्द्रिय:
by anger numbed senses
आसाद्य तरसा
attacking quickly
दैत्य: गदया-
the demon by the mace
अभ्यहनत्--हरिम्
hit The Lord

The demon Hiranyaaksha produced wrathful hissings breaths, his senses were numbed by anger. Charging quickly, he delt a blow with his mace on The Lord.


भगवांस्तु गदावेगं विसृष्टं रिपुणोरसि ।

अवञ्चयत्तिरश्चीनो योगारूढ इवान्तकम् ॥१५॥


भगवान्-तु
the Lord (Varaaha) indeed
गदा-वेगम् विसृष्टम्
the force of the mace hurled
रिपुणा-उरसि
by the enemy (Hiranyaaksha) on the chest
अवञ्चयत्-तिरश्चीन:
escaped, by moving aside
योगारूढ:
(a person) in yoga excelling
इव-अन्तकम्
as (would) escape death

The Lord Varaaha, escaped the force of the mace hurled at His chest by the enemy Hiranyaaksha, just as a person excelling in yoga would escape death.


पुनर्गदां स्वामादाय भ्रामयन्तमभीक्ष्णश: ।

अभ्यधावद् हरि: क्रुद्ध: संरम्भाद्दष्टदच्छदम् ॥१६॥


पुन:-गदाम् स्वाम्-आदाय
again the mace, his own taking up
भ्रामयन्तम्-अभीक्ष्णश:
and wielding again and again
अभ्यधावद् हरि: क्रुद्ध:
ran after (him), Shree Hari, enraged
संरम्भात्-द्ष्ट-दच्छदम्
in anger biting his lips

As Hiranyaaksha, biting his lips in anger wielded his mace again and again. Shree Hari was enraged and took up His own mace and ran after him.


ततश्च गदयारातिं दक्षिणस्यां भ्रुवि प्रभु:।

आजघ्ने स तु तां सौम्य गदया कोविदोऽहनत् ॥१७॥


ततश्च गदया-आरातिम्
then and by the mace, on the enemy's
दक्षिणस्याम् भ्रुवि प्रभु:
on right brow, The Lord
आजघ्ने स: तु ताम्
struck (a blow), he also that (blow)
सौम्य गदया
O Dear! (Vidura), by (his) mace
कोविदोऽहनत्
the expert hit back

And then The Lord struck a blow on the right brow of the enemy Hiranyaaksha. O Dear Vidura! But the expert hit back that blow with his mace.


एवं गदाभ्यां गुर्वीभ्यां हर्यक्षो हरिरेव च ।

जिगीषया सुसंरब्धावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतु: ॥१८॥


एवम् गदाभ्याम् गुर्वीभ्याम्
like this, by maces heavy
हर्यक्ष: हरि:-एव च
Hiranyaaksha, Shree Hari also and
जिगीषया सुसंरब्धौ-
wanting to win, greatly angered
अन्य:-अन्यम्-अभिजघ्नतु:
each other attacked

In this way, Hiranyaaksha and also Shree Hari were greatly angered, and wanting to win, aatacked each other with the heavy maces.


तयो: स्पृधोस्तिग्मगदाहताङ्गयो: क्षतास्रवघ्राणविवृद्धमन्य्वो: ।

विचित्रमार्गांश्चरतोर्जिगीषया व्यभादिलायामिव शुष्मिणोर्मृध: ॥१९॥


तयो: स्पृधो:-तिग्म-गदा-
in their contest, by the sharp maces
आहत-अङ्गयो:
wounded limbed
क्षत-आस्रव-घ्राण-
from the wounds flowing blood's smell
विवृद्ध-मन्य्वो:
increasing anger
विचित्र-मार्गान्-
strange manoeuvres
चरतो:-जिगीषया
undertaking, to win
व्यभात्-इलायाम्-इव
looked as if for the cow, like
शुष्मिणो:-मृध:
fighting two bulls

They were having a keen contest and their bodies were hurt by the sharp mace's blows. Blood flowed from the wounds, which increased their anger. They undertook strange manouvers with the will to win and it looked as if two bulls were fighting for a cow.


दैत्यस्य यज्ञावयवस्य माया गृहीतवाराहतनोर्महात्मन: ।

कौरव्य मह्यां द्विषतोर्विमर्दनं दिदृक्षुरागादृषिभिर्वृत: स्वराट् ॥२०॥


दैत्यस्य
of the Daitya (Diti's son)
यज्ञ-अवयवस्य
and sacrifice personified (Lord)
माया गृहीत-वाराह-तनो:-
by Maayaa, had taken boar's body
महात्मन:
the Lord's
कौरव्य
O Kaurava descendent (Vidura)
मह्याम् द्विषत:-
for the earth sake (holding) animosity
विमर्दनम् दिदृक्षु:-आगात्-
the combat eager to see, came
ऋषिभि:-वृत: स्वराट्
with saints surrounded Brahmaa

O Kauravya Vidura! The demon Hiranyaaksha and the sacrifice personified Lord, Who had taken the body of a boar by His Mayaa, held enimosity for the sake of the earth. Brahmaa came along with the sages, eager to watch the combat.


आसन्नशौण्डीरमपेतसाध्वसं कृतप्रतीकारमहार्यविक्रमम् ।

विलक्ष्य दैत्यं भगवान् सहस्रणीर्जगाद नारायणमादिसूकरम् ॥२१॥


आसन्न-शौण्डीरम्-
full of valour
अपेत-साध्वसम्
devoid of fear
कृत-प्रतीकारम्-
difficult to be fought back
अहार्य-विक्रमम्
of immense power
विलक्ष्य दैत्यम्
seeing the demon
भगवान् सहस्रणी:-
the lord (Brahmaa) with thousands of sages
जगाद नारायणम्-
said to Naaraayana
आदि-सूकरम्
the earliest Boar

Lord Brahmaa, who had come with thousands of sages, saw that the demon Hiranyaaksha was full of valour and devoid of fear, and was difficult to be faught back, and also had immense power. So, he said to Naaraayana, Who was the earliest Boar…


ब्रह्मोवाच -

एष ते देव देवानामङ्घ्रिमूलमुपेयुषाम् ।

विप्राणां सौरभेयीणां भूतानामप्यनागसाम् ॥२२॥


एष: ते देव
this, Your, O Lord!
देवानाम्-अङ्घ्रि-
(and) of the gods', feet
मूलम्-उपेयुषाम्
shelter sought
विप्राणाम् सौरभेयीणम्
of the Braahmanas, the cows
भूतानाम्-अपि-अनागसाम्
of the beings also, innocent

Oh Lord! This demon, to the gods who have saught shelter at Your feet, to the Braahmanas, the cows and also to the innocent beings..


आगस्कृद्भयकृद्दुष्कृदस्मद्राद्ध वरोऽसुर: ।

अन्वेषन्नप्रतिरथो लोकानटति कण्टक: ॥२३॥


आगस्कृत्-भयकृत्-
causing harm, causing fear,
दुष्कृत्-अस्स्मात्-राद्ध
causing injury, from us obtained
वर:-असुर: अन्वेषन्-
boon, the demon searching
अप्रतिरथ:
for a contender
लोकान्-अटति कण्टक:
the worlds roams, like a thorn

The demon having obtained the boon from us, lookingh for a contender, roams the worlds, like a thorn, causing harm, fear and injury to the gods, Braahmanas, cows, and innocent beings.


मैनं मायाविनं दृप्तं निरङ्कुशमसत्तमम् ।

आक्रीड बालवद्देव यथाऽऽशीविषमुत्थितम् ॥२४॥


मा-एनम् मायाविनम्
may not him, the trickster,
दृप्तम् निरङ्कुशम्-
arrogant, having no control,
असत्तमम् आक्रीड
wicked, play with
बाल-वत्-देव यथा
child-like Oh! Lord! Just as
आशीविषम्-उत्थितम्
a serpent enraged

Oh! Lord! May you not play with him, who is a trickster, arrogant, control-less and wicked, just as a child would play with an enraged serpent.


न यावदेष वर्धेत स्वां वेलां प्राप्य दारुण: ।

स्वां देव मायामास्थाय तावज्जह्यघमच्युत ॥२५॥


न यावत्-एष वर्धेत
not until, this (demon) increases
स्वाम् वेलाम् प्राप्य
his (favourable) time reaching
दारुण:
dreadful
स्वाम् देव मायाम्-
Your own, O Lord! Maayaa (divine energy)
आस्थाय तावत्-जहि-
presiding over, by that time kill
अघम्-अच्युत
the sinner, O Immortal Lord!

O Immortal Lord! By the time this demon increases his dreadfulness by reaching his favourable time, evening, O Immortal Lord! By that time kill the sinner, by presiding over Your own divine energy Maayaa.


एषा घोरतमा सन्ध्या लोकच्छम्बट्करी प्रभो ।

उपसर्पति सर्वात्मन् सुराणां जयमावह ॥२६॥


एषा घोरतमा सन्ध्या
this the dreadful evening
लोक-शम्बट्करी
the worlds ruining
प्रभो उपसर्पति
O Lord! is enclosing (approaching)
सर्वात्मन्
O Universal Soul!
सुराणाम् जयम्-आवह
the gods victory call forth

O Lord! O Universal Soul! The most dreadful evening is approaching and enclosing fast. Do kill this demon and call forth the victory of the gods.


अधुनैषोऽभिजिन्नाम योगो मौहूर्तिको ह्यगात् ।

शिवाय नस्त्वं सुहृदामाशु निस्तर दुस्तरम् ॥२७॥


अधुना-एष:-
now this
अभिजित्-नाम योग:
Abhijit named formation (of stars)
मौहूर्तिक: हि-अगात्
the auspicious indeed is present
शिवाय न:-त्वम् सुहृदाम्-
for good of us, You, of friends,
आशु निस्तर् दुस्तरम्
quickly dispose off this formidable one

At present, the formation of stars Abhijit, which is most auspicious, is indeed present. For the good of us, Your friends, quickly dispose off this formidable one.


दिष्ट्या त्वां विहितं मृत्युमयमासादित: स्वयम् ।

विक्रम्यैनं मृधे हत्वा लोकानाधेहि शर्मणि ॥२८॥


दिष्ट्या त्वाम् विहितम् मृत्युम्-
fortunately, in You connected (is his) death
अयम्-आसादित: स्वयम्
he has approached (You) himself
विक्रम्य-एनम् मृधे हत्वा
winning him over, in battle kill (him)
लोकान्-आधेहि शर्मणि
the worlds establish in peace

Fortunately, because his death is to be at Your hands, he has approached You by himself. By killing him in the battle, win him and establish peace in the world.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहण्स्यां संहितायां तृतीयस्कन्धे हिरण्याक्ष वधे अष्टादशोध्याय: समाप्त ॥१८॥


Thus ends the eighteenth discourse, forming part of the story relating to Hiranyaaksha's death in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
