मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
अवधार्य विरिञ्चस्य निर्व्यलीकामृतं वच: ।
प्रहस्य प्रेमगर्भेण तदपाङ्गेन सोऽग्रहीत् ॥१॥
अवधार्य विरिञ्चस्य
hearing Brahmaa's
निर्व्यलीक-अमृतम् वच:
guileless and nectar like (sweet) words
प्रहस्य प्रेम-गर्भेण
laughingly, love full of,
तत्-अपाङ्गेन
that with side glance
स:-अग्रहीत्
He accepted
On hearing the guileless and nectar-like sweet words of Brahmaa, He, laughingly and with a side glance full of love, accepted it.
तत: सपत्नं मुखतश्चरन्तमकुतोभयम् ।
जघानोत्पत्य गदया हनावसुरमक्षज: ॥२॥
तत: सपत्नम् मुखत:-
thereafter, enemy, in front
चरन्तम्-अकुत:-भयम्
moving about, without fear
जघान-उत्पत्य गदया
dealt a blow, leaping with the mace,
हनौ-असुरम्-अक्षज:
killed the demon, the Divine Boar
Thereafter, The Divine Boar, with a leap delt a blow with the mace on the enemy demon, moving about in front, and killed him.
सा हता तेन गदया विहता भगवत्करात् ।
विघूर्णितापतद्रेजे तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥३॥
सा हता तेन गदया
that hit, by that mace
विहता भगवत्-करात्
slipped from Lord's hands
विघूर्णिता-अपतत्-रेजे
whirling fell down splendidly,
तत्-अद्भुतम्-इव-अभवत्
that wonderful indeed happened
That (Lord's) mace, hit by the demon's mace, slipped from the Lord's hands,and looked splenderous as it fell with a whirl. This indeed was a wonderful incedent.
स तदा लब्धतीर्थोऽपि न बवाधे निरायुधम् ।
मानयन् स मृधे धर्मं विष्वक्सेनं प्रकोपयन् ॥४॥
स: तदा लब्ध-तीर्थ:-अपि
he then, gaining opportunity also
न बवाधे निरायुधम्
did not attack, the weapon less (Lord)
मानयन् स: मृधे धर्मम्
honouring he, the battle rule
विष्वक्सेनम् प्रकोपयन्
The Lord enraging
Even though at that time the demon had gained an opportunity, he did not attack his unarmed enemy, the Lord, following the rule of combat, which enraged the Lord.
गदायामपविद्धायां हाहाकारे विनिर्गते।
मानयामास तद्धर्मं सुनाभं चास्मरद्विभु: ॥५॥
गदायाम्-अपविद्धायाम्
the mace having fallen,
हाहाकारे विनिर्गते
the cries of alarm having subsided
मानयामास तत्-धर्मम्
honoured his righteousness
सुनाभं च-अस्मरत्-विभु:
the discus and invoked the Universal Lord
When the mace slipped from the Lord's hand, there were cries of alarm. When they subsided, The Lord honoured the righteousness of the demon and invoked His discus Sudarshana.
तं व्यग्रचक्रं दितिपुत्राधमेन स्वपार्षदमुख्येन विषज्जमानम् ।
चित्रा वाचोऽतद्विदां खेचराणां तत्रासन् स्वस्ति तेऽमुं जहीति ॥६॥
तम् व्यग्र-चक्रम्
Him wielding the discus,
दितिपुत्-अधमेन
by Diti's son (Hiranyaaksha) wicked
स्व-पार्षद-मुख्येन
by His attendant main (formerly)
विषज्जमानम्
engaged in play

तत्-विदाम् खेचराणाम्
that knowing of gods
तत्-आसन्
there was
स्वस्ति ते
victory be to You
अमुम् जही-इति
him kill, thus
The Lord was wielding His discus, and the wicked son of Diti, who was formerly the chief attendent of the Lord, Hiranyaaksha, engaged Him as though in play. Witnessing this, the gods in their ariel vehicles said in strange voices, 'victory be to You! Do kill him', thus.
स तं निशाम्यात्तरथाङ्गमग्रतो व्यवस्थितं पद्मपलाशलोचनम् ।
विलोक्य चामर्षपरिप्लुतेन्द्रियो रुषा स्वदन्तच्छदमादशच्छ्वसन् ॥७॥
स: तम् निशाम्य-
he (Hiranyaaksha) that (sound) hearing
आत्त-रथाङ्गम्-अग्रत: व्यवस्थितम्
having taken on the discus, in front ready
पद्म-पलाश-लोचनम् विलोक्य
lotus petal eyed (Him) seeing
च-अमर्ष-परिप्लुत-
and with anger overflowing
इन्द्रिय: रुषा
in the senses, in anger
स्व-दन्त:छदम्-
by (his) own teeth, the lips
आदशत्-श्वसन्
bit breathing
Hiranyaksha heard the voice, and saw the lotus petal eyed Lord standing in front weilding the discus and ready for the combat. Anger overflowed in all his senses and he bit his lips with his teeth, breathing in anger.
करालदंष्ट्रश्चक्षुर्भ्यां सश्चक्षाणो दहन्निव ।
अभिप्लुत्य स्वगदया हतोऽसीत्याहनद्त्-हरिम् ॥८॥
कराल-दंष्ट्र:-चक्षुर्भ्याम्
ferocious toothed (he), by his two eyes
स:-चक्षाण: दहन्-इव
looking around burning as if
अभिप्लुत्य स्व-गदया
charging with his mace
हत:-असि-इति-
'killed (you) are', thus
अहनत्-हरिम्
hit Shree Hari
The ferocious toothed demon, with his two eyes, looked aroung burning as if, charged with his mace and attacked Shree Hari saying thus, 'You are killed".
पदा सव्येन तां साधो भगवान् यज्ञसूकर: ।
लीलया मिषत: शत्रो: प्राहरद्वातरंहसम् ॥९॥
पदा सव्येन ताम् साधो
with leg left, that (mace) O Vidura!
भगवान् यज्ञसूकर:
the Lord of sacrifices, the (divine) Boar
लीलया मिषत: शत्रो:
playfully, as looked on the enemy
प्राहरत्-वात-रंहसम्
knocked it down with tempest speed
O Vidura! The Lord of sacrifices, the divine Boar, with His left leg playfully knocked down the mace which came with the speed of a tempest, as the enemy looked on.
आह च आयुधमाधत्स्व घटस्व त्वं जिगीषसि ।
इत्युक्त: स तदा भूयस्ताडयन् व्यनदद् भृशम् ॥१०॥
आह च आयुधम्-आधत्स्व
said and, ’weapon take up
घटस्व त्वम् जिगीषसि
and apply you wanting to win’
इति-उक्त: स: तदा
thus being said, he then
भूय:-ताडयन् व्यनदद् भृशम्
again charged roaring aloud
And the Lord said, ’take up the weapon and apply it, if you want to win'. Being said thus, he charged again as he roared aloud.
तां स आपततीं वीक्ष्य भगवान् समव्यस्थित: ।
जग्राह लीलया प्राप्तां गरुत्मानिव पन्नगीम् ॥११॥
ताम् स: आपततम् वीक्ष्य
that He, flowing seeing
भगवान् समव्यस्थित:
The Lord stood firmly
जग्राह लीलया प्राप्ताम्
seized playfully, coming near
गरुत्मान्-इव पन्नगीम्
Gaduda like the snake
As The Lord saw the mace flying and comming near, He stood firmly and effortlessly siezed it, just as Gaduda, the king of birds, would sieze a serpant.
स्वपौरुषे प्रतिहते ह्तमानो महासुर: ।
नैच्छद्गदां दीयमानां हरिणा विगतप्रभ: ॥१२॥
स्व-पौरुषे प्रतिहते
his own effort beaten
ह्त-मान: महासुर:
disheartened the great demon
न-ऐच्छत्-गदाम्
did not want (the mace)
दीयमानाम् हरिणा
being given by Hari
विगतप्रभ:
bereft of valour
With his own effort beaten up, the great demon was disheartened and did not want the mace even though given by Shree Hari. He was bereft of valour.
जग्राह त्रिशिखं शूलं ज्वलज्ज्वलनलोलुपम् ।
यग्याय धृतरूपाय विप्रायाभिचरन् यथा ॥१३॥
जग्राह त्रि-शिखम् शूलम्
took hold of three (pointed) trident
ज्वलत्-ज्वलन्-
enflamed flaming
अनलोलुपम्
fire blazing
यग्याय धृतरूपाय
for sacrifice taking on the form ( of a Boar)
विप्राय-अभिचरन् यथा
on a Braahmana curse like
The demon took on a three pointed trident which was blazing like an enflamed fire, to apply on The Lord of sacrifice, who had taken form of a Boar, just as one would fruitlessly curse a Braahmana.
तदोजसा दैत्यमहाभटार्पितं चकासदन्त:ख उदीर्णदीधिति ।
चक्रेण चिच्छेद निशातनेमिना हरिर्यथा तार्क्ष्यपतत्त्रमुज्झितम् ॥१४॥
तत्-ओजसा
that (the trident) with great strength
दैत्य-महाभट-अर्पितम्
by the demon mighty flung
चकासत्-अन्त:-खे
shone in the sky
उदीर्ण-दीधिति
scattering its brightness
चक्रेण चिच्छेद
(which) by the discus cut away
निशात-नेमिना
by sharp edged
हरि:-यथा
Shree Hari, just as
तार्क्ष्य-पतत्त्रम्-
Gaduda's wing
उज्झितम्
was cut down
The mighty demon flung the shining trident with full strength, which scattered its brightness in the sky. It was cut away by Shree Hari by the sharp edged discus, just as the wing of Gaduda was cut off (by Indra).
वृक्णे स्वशूले बहुधारिणा हरे: प्रत्येत्य विस्तीर्णमुरो विभूतिम् ।
प्रवृद्धरोष: स कठोरमुष्टिना नदन् प्रहृत्यान्तरधीयतासुर: ॥१५॥
वृक्णे स्व-शूले
being cut his own trident
बहु-धारिणा हरे:
by the sharp edged of Shree Hari
प्रत्येत्य
leaping in front
विस्तीर्णम्-उर: विभूतिम्
on the broad chest bearing Shri- Vatsa
प्रवृद्ध-रोष:
with increased anger
स: कठोर-मुष्टिना
he with a hard fist
नदन् प्रहृत्य-
screamingly hit
अन्तरधीयत-असुर:
(and) vanished the demon
His own trident being cut, by the sharp edged discus of Shree Hari, he leapt in front and with a hard fist screamingly hit Shree Hari's broad chest marked with Shri-Vatsa..
तेनेत्थमाहत: क्षत्तर्भगवानादिसूकर: ।
नाकम्पत मनाक् क्वापि स्रजा हत इव द्विप: ॥१६॥
तेन-इत्थम्-आहत:
by him (the demon) thus hit
क्षत्त:-भगवान्-आदि-सूकर:
O Vidura! The Lord, the First Boar
नाकम्पत मनाक् क्व-अपि
did not stir slightly, anywhere even
स्रजा हत इव द्विप:
by a garland hit like an elephant
Thus hit by the demon, The First Boar, The Lord, did not stir anywhere in the body even slightly, just like an elephant would, when hit by a garland of flowers.
अथोरुधासृजन्मायां योगमायेश्वरे हरौ ।
यां विलोक्य प्रजास्त्रस्ता मेनिरेऽस्योपसंयमम् ॥१७॥
अथ-उरुधा-असृजन्-
then many conjuring
मायाम् योगमाया-ईश्वरे
tricks, on The Lord of Yoga Maayaa
हरौ याम् विलोक्य
Shree Hari, which seeing
प्रजा:-त्रस्ता: मेनिरे-
people were tormented, (and) understood
अस्य-उपसंयमम्
its (the world's) end
The demon then conjured many tricks on The Lord of Yoga Maayaa, Shree Hari. Seeing which the people were very much tormented and took it to be the end of the world.
प्रववुर्वायवश्चण्डास्तम: पांसवमैरयन् ।
दिग्भ्यो निपेतुर्ग्रावाण: क्षेपणै: प्रहिता इव ॥१८॥
प्रववु:-वायव:-चण्डा:-
blew winds fierce
तम: पांसवम्-ईरयन्
darkness and dust spreading
दिग्भ्य: निपेतु:-ग्रावाण:
in the directions fell stones
क्षेपणै: प्रहिता इव
by slings charged like
Fierce winds started to blow, spreading darkness and dust. Stones came falling from all directions, as if charged from a sling.
द्यौर्नष्टभगणाभ्रौद्यै: सविद्युत्स्तनयित्नुभि: ।
वर्षद्भि: पूयकेशासृग्विण्मूत्रास्थीनि चासकृत् ॥१९॥
द्यौ:-नष्ट-भगणा-
in the heaves, were lost the luminaries
अभ्र-औद्यै: सविद्युत्-
the sky by clouds with lightening
स्तनयित्नुभि:
(and) thunder (being cast)
वर्षद्भि: पूय:-केश-
and by the raining of pus, hair,
असृक्-विट्-मूत्र-अस्थीनि
blood, faeces, urine, bones,
च-असकृत्
and continuously
The luminaries in the heavens were lost because the sky was cast with clouds lightening and thunder, from which pus, hair, blood, faeces, urines and bones rained incessently.
गिरय: प्रत्यदृश्यन्त नानायुधमुचोऽनघ ।
दिग्वाससो यातुधान्य: शूलिन्यो मुक्तमूर्धजा: ॥२०॥
गिरय: प्रत्यदृश्यन्त
mountains were seen
नाना-आयुध-मुच:-अनघ
various weapons discharging, O Sinless Vidura!
दिग्वासस: यातुधान्य:
naked demonises
शूलिन्य: मुक्त-मूर्धजा:
with tridents and loose hair
O Sinless Vidura! Mountains were seen to be discharging various weapons, and also were seen naked demonesses holding tridents with their hair let loose.
बहुभिर्यक्षरक्षोभि पत्त्यश्वरथकुञ्जरै: ।
आततायिभिरुत्सृष्टा हिंस्रा वाचोऽतिवैशसा: ॥२१॥
बहुभि:-यक्ष-रक्षोभि:
by many Yakshas and Raakshasas
पत्ति-अश्व-रथ-कुञ्जरै:
on foot, (mounted ) on horses, in chariots, on elephants
आततायिभि:-उत्सृष्टा:
by the enemies shouted
हिंस्रा: वाच:-अति-वैशसा:
savage speech, very cruel
The many enemy Yakshas and Raakshasa, who were on foot, in chariots and also mounted on horses and elephants, shouted savage and very cruel speech.
प्रादुष्कृतानां मायानामसुराणां विनाशयात् ।
सुदर्शनास्त्रं भगवान् प्रयुङ्क्त दयितं त्रिपात् ॥२२॥
प्रादुष्कृतानाम् मायानम्-
the appearance of the Maayaa
असुराणाम् विनाशयात्
of the demons to disperse
सुदर्श-अस्त्रम् भगवान्
the Sudarshana weapon, The Lord
प्रयुङ्क्त दयितम् त्रिपात्
applied, favourite, the representator of the sacrifices
The representator of the sacrifices the Lord as the divine Boar, then applied His favourite weapon Sudarshana, to disperse the Maayaa of the demons which had appeared.
तदा दिते: समभवत्सहसा हृदि वेपथु: ।
स्मरन्त्या भर्तुरादेशं स्तनाच्चासृक् प्रसुस्रुवे ॥२३॥
तदा दिते: समभवत्-
at that time, to Diti, it happened
सहसा हृदि वेपथु:
suddenly, (her) heart trembled
स्मरन्त्या भर्तु:-आदेशम्
(as she) remembered (her) husband's words
स्तनात्-च-असृक् प्रसुस्रुवे
from her breasts and blood flowed
Suddenly, it so happened with Diti, that her heart trembled, as she recalled her husband's words, and blood started flowing from her breasts.
विनष्टासु स्वमायासु भूयश्चाव्रज्य केशवम् ।
रूषोपगूहमानोऽमुं ददृशेऽवस्थितं बहि: ॥२४॥
विनष्टासु स्व-मायासु
being destroyed his Maayaa
भूय:-च-आव्रज्य केशवम्
again and nearing Lord Keshava
रूषा-उपगूहमान:-अमुम्
in anger, holding Him in arms Him
ददृशे-अवस्थितम् बहि:
saw standing outside (his hold)
When the demon saw his Maayaa was destroyed, he again approached Lord Keshava, and in anger, took Him in his embrace, so as to crush Him. But to his amazement he saw Him standing outside his hold.
तं मुष्टिभिर्विनिघ्नन्तं वज्रसारैरधोक्षज: ।
करेण कर्णमूलेऽहन् यथा त्वाष्ट्रं मरुत्पति: ॥२५॥
तम् मुष्टिभि:-विनिघ्नन्तम्
him (who was) by fists, blowing hits
वज्र-सारै:-अधोक्षज:
bolt like, Lord Adhokshaja
करेण कर्ण-मूले-अहन्
by hand in the ear's root hit
यथा त्वाष्ट्रम् मरुत्-पति:
just as to Twashta's son (Vritra) the wind Lord did
Lord Adhokshaja, then slapped with his hand at the root of the ear of the demon who was hitting bolt like hits on the Lord, with his fists, just as the lord of the winds, Indra had hit Vritra, the son of Twashtaa.
स आहतो विश्वजिता ह्यवज्ञया परिभ्रमङ्गात्र उदस्तलोचन:।
विशीर्ण वाह्वङ्घ्रिशिरोरुहोऽपतद् यथानगेन्द्रो लुलितो नभस्वता ॥२६॥
स: आहत: विश्वजिता
he (when was) hit by The World Conqueror
हि-अवज्ञया परिभ्रमत्-गात्र:
indifferently, with (his) limbs and body whirling
उदस्तलोचन: विशीर्ण वाहु:
bulging eyes, scattered arms
अङ्घ्रि-शिरोरुह:-अपतत्-
legs and hair, fell down
यथा-नगेन्द्र: लुलित: नभस्वता
just as a big tree, uprooted by storm
When the Lord, the World Conquerer, indifferently hit the demon, his body whirled, his arms legs and hair scattered and he fell down just as by a storm, a huge tree is uprooted and falls.
क्षितौ शयानं तमकुण्ठवर्चसं करालदंष्ट्रं परिदष्टदच्छदम् ।
अजादयो वीक्ष्य शशंसुरागता अहो इमां को नु लभेत संस्थितिम् ॥२७॥
क्षितौ शयानम्
on the earth lying
तम्-अकुण्ठ-वर्चसम्
him (of) undiminished glow
कराल-दंष्ट्रम्
fierce toothed
परिदष्ट-दच्छदम्
biting lips
अज-आदय: वीक्ष्य
the gods and others seeing
शशंसु:-आगता:
praised, (who) had come
अहो इमाम् क: नु
Oh! Such who indeed
लभेत संस्थितिम्
attains death
The gods and others had gathered there, and saw him with undiminished glow and fierce toothed, biting his lips, lying on the earth, and exclaimed in admiration, 'Oh who would attain such a death?'
यं योगिनो योगसमाधिना रहो ध्यायन्ति लिङ्गादसतो मुमुक्षया ।
तस्यैष दैत्यऋषभ: पदाहतो मुखं प्रपश्यंस्तनुमुत्ससर्ज ह ॥२८॥
यम् योगिन: योग-समाधिना
Whom the Yogis by yoga and meditation
रह: ध्यायन्ति
in seclusion concentrate on
लिङ्गात्-असतो मुमुक्षया
from the body false to seek liberation
तस्य-एष दैत्य-ऋषभ:
His this of Diti's sons the scion
पदा-आहत: मुखम् प्रपश्यम्
leg hit, face seeing
तनुम्-उत्ससर्ज ह
body gave up Oh
Oh! The scion of Diti's sons gave up his body as he looked on at the face of Him, Who hit him with His leg, Whom the sages meditate upon in seclusion with the desire to seek liberation from false material attachments.
एतौ तौ पार्षदावस्य शापाद्यातावसद्गतिम् ।
पुन: कतिपयै: स्थानं प्रपत्स्येते ह जन्मभि: ॥२९॥
एतौ तौ पार्षदौ-अस्य
these two (were) the attendants His
शापात्-यातौ-असत्-गतिम्
by curse got to bad state
पुन: कतिपयै: स्थानम्
again after some the abode
प्रपत्स्येते ह जन्मभि:
will attain in births
These two demons, Hiranyaaksha and Hiranyakashipu, are the two attendents of The Lord. They will attain their heavenly abodes after some births.
देवा ऊचु: -
नमो नमस्तेऽखिल यज्ञतन्तवे स्थितौ गृहीतामलसत्त्वमूर्तये ।
दिष्ट्या हतोऽयं जगताम् अरून्तुदस्त्वत्पादभक्त्या वयमीश निर्वृता: ॥३०॥
नम: नम:-ते-
hail, hail to You
अखिल यज्ञ-तन्तवे
the total of sacrifices The Source
स्थितौ गृहीत-अमल-
in the universe, assuming pure
सत्त्व-मूर्तये
True form
दिष्ट्या हत:-अयम्
fortunately is killed this
जगताम् अरून्तुद:-
the worlds' tormentor
त्वत्-पाद-भक्त्या
by Your feets' devotion
वयम्-ईश निर्वृता:
we are O Lord! Relieved
O Lord! Hail, hail to You, the primary sources of the sum total of sacrifices, You have assumed this pure True form for the universe. Fortunately this tormentor of the worlds is killed and by devotion to Your feet, we are relieved.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
एवं हिरण्याक्षमसह्यविक्रमं स सादयित्वा हरिरादिसूकर: ।
जगाम लोकं स्वयमखण्डितोत्सवं समीडित: पुष्करविष्टरादिभि: ॥३१॥
एवम् हिरण्याक्षम्-असह्यविक्रमम्
thus Hiranyaaksha of unbearable prowess
स: सादयित्वा
He having killed
हरि:-आदि-सूकर:
Shree Hari, in the form of the Primal Boar
जगाम लोकम् स्वयम्-
went away to abode his own
अखण्डित-उत्सवम्
of uninterrupted joy
समीडित:
being sung highly
पुष्कर-विष्ट:-आदिभि:
by lotus seated (Brahmaa) and others
Thus, Shree Hari, in the form of the Primal Boar, having killed the super powered Hiranyaaksha, went to His own abode of uninterrupted joy. The lotus seated Brahma and others sang His praises highly .
मया यथानूक्तमवादि ते हरे: कृतावतारस्य सुमित्रचेष्टितम् ।
यथा हिरण्याक्ष उदारविक्रमो महामृधे क्रीडनवन्निराकृत: ॥३२॥
मया यथा-अनूक्तम्-
by me, as told (by my master)
अवादि ते हरे: कृत-
is said to you, Shree Hari's taken
अवतारस्य सुमित्र-चेष्टितम्
incarnation's, O good friend! The deeds
यथा हिरण्याक्ष उदार-विक्रम:
how Hiranyaaksha of liberal power
महामृधे क्रीडनवत्-निराकृत:
in the great battle playfully killed
O Good Friend Vidura! I have told you about the deeds of Shree Hari, in this incarnation, as it was told to me by my master, how He playfully killed the demon Hiranyaaksha, of liberal powers.
इति कौषारवाख्यातामाश्रुत्य भगवत्कथाम् ।
क्षत्ताऽऽनन्दं परं लेभे महाभागवतो द्विज ॥३३॥
इति कौषारव-आख्याताम-
this by Maitreya narrated
आश्रुत्य भगवत्-कथाम्
hearing, The Lord's story
क्षत्ता-आनन्दम् परम् लेभे
Vidura, bliss high attained
महाभागवत: द्विज
the great devotee, O holy sage!
O Holy sage! The great devotee Vidura attained great bliss having heard The Lord's story narrated by Maitreya.
अन्येषां पुण्यश्लोकानामुद्दामयशसां सताम् ।
उपश्रुत्य भवेन्मोद: श्रीवत्साङ्कस्य किं पुन: ॥३४॥
अन्येषाम् पुण्य-श्लोकानम्-
of others, merits glorious
उद्दाम-यशसाम् सताम्
very famous noble soled (peoples')
उपश्रुत्य भवेत्-मोद:
by hearing happens joy
श्रीवत्साङ्कस्य
(of the Bearer) of the ShreeVats marked
किम् पुन:
what again
It gives joy to hear about the glorious merits of famous noble souled people, what of hearing about the deeds of non other than the bearer of Shreevatsa mark.
यो गजेन्द्रं झषग्रस्तं ध्यायन्तं चरणाम्बुजम् ।
क्रोशन्तीनां करेणूनां कृच्छतोऽमोचयद् द्रुतम् ॥३५॥
य: गजेन्द्रम् झष-ग्रस्तम्
Who, the lordly elephant by the alligator caught
ध्यायन्तम् चरण-अम्बुजम्
meditating on (His) feet lotus
क्रोशन्तीनाम् करेणूनाम्
screaming the female elephants
कृच्छत:अमोचयत्- द्रुतम्
from trouble liberated quickly
The Lord Who had quickly liberated the lordly elephant, who was caught by the alligator and was meditating on His lotus feet, as the female elephants screamed.
तं सुखाराध्यमृजुभिरनन्यशरणैर्नृभि: ।
कृतज्ञ: को न सेवेत दुराराध्यमसाधुभि: ॥३६॥
तं सुख-आराध्यम्-ऋजुभि:-
Him, (Who) is easily worshipped by the saintly (people)
अनन्य-शरणै:-नृभि:
other than Him shelter people (do not have)
कृतज्ञ: क: न सेवेत
that grateful (person), who will not serve
दुराराध्यम्-असाधुभि:
(Him, Who) is difficult to be worshipped by the unrighteous
Which grateful person will not serve Him, Who is easily worshipped by the saintly people, and Who is the only shelter of the people, and Who is very difficult to be worshipped by the unrighteous.
यो वै हिरण्याक्ष वधं महाद्भुतं विक्रीडितं कारणसूकरात्मन: ।
ऋणोति गायन्त्यनुमोदतेऽञ्जसा विमुच्यते ब्रह्मवधादपि द्विजा: ॥३७॥
य: वै हिरण्याक्ष वधम्
who (so ever) indeed, Hiranyaaksha's slaying
महा-अद्भुतम् विक्रीडितम्
the super wonderful sport
कारण-सूकर-आत्मन:
by the purpose (incarnate) boar form
ऋणोति गायन्ति-
listens to, sings about,
अनुमोदते-अञ्जसा
applauds, easily
विमुच्यते ब्रह्म-वधात्-अपि
is absolved of Braahmana's murder also
द्विजा:
O Brahmans!
O Braahmanas! Those who listen to, sing about, or applaude the super wonderful sport of Hiranyaaksha's slaying by the purposeful boar incarnate form of The Lord, is easily absolved even of a sin as grave as the murder of a Braahmana.
एतन्महापुण्यमलं पवित्रं धन्यं यशस्यं परमायुराशिषाम् ।
प्राणेन्द्रियाणां युधि शौर्यवर्धनं नारायणोऽन्ते गतिरङ्ग शृण्वताम् ॥३८॥
एतत्-महापुण्यम्-
this greatly meritorious
अलम् पवित्रम् धन्यम् यशस्यम्
very sacred, wealth (and) fame (giving)
परम-आयु:-आशिषाम्
highly, age and wishes fulfilling
प्राण-इन्द्रियाणाम्
of life and senses
युधि शौर्य-वर्धनम्
in a battle valour increasing
नारायण:-अन्ते गति:-
Naaraayana in the end (time of death) shelter
अङ्ग शृण्वताम्
O Dear! To the listeners
O Dear Shaunaka! This highly meritoreous, very sacred narration is wealth and fame giving. It greatly fulfills all the wishes and increases the age. In a battle, it increases the valour of the life force and the senses. When it is heard at the time of death, one is ensured of the shelter of Naaraayana.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यायां संहितायां तृतीय: स्कन्धे हिरण्याक्षवधो नमैकोनविंशो अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥१९॥
Thus ends the ninteenth discourse entitled the "Death of Hiranyaaksha", in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
