विदुर उवाच -

स्वायम्भुवस्य च मनोर्वंश: परमसम्मत: ।

कथ्यतां भगवन् यत्र मैथुनेनैधिरे प्रजा: ॥१॥


स्वायम्भुवस्य च मनो:-
of Swaayambhuva and Manu's
वंश: परम-सम्मत:
lineage, most esteemed
कथ्यताम् भगवन् यत्र
do tell, O Worshipful One! Where,
मैथुनेन एधिरे प्रजा:
by sexual union multiplied the progeny

O Worshipful One! Do tell me about the most esteemed lineage of Swaayambhuva Manu, in which the progeny multiplied by sexul union.


प्रियव्रतोत्तानपादौ सुतौ स्वायम्भुवस्य वै ।

यथा धर्मं जुगुपतु: सप्तद्वीपवतीम् महीम् ॥२॥


प्रियव्रत-उत्तानपादौ
Priyavrata and Uttanpaada
सुतौ स्वायम्भुवस्य वै
the two sons of Swaayambhuva certainly
यथा धर्मम् जुगुपतु:
according to Dharma ruled
सप्त-द्वीपवतीम् महीम्
the seven islanded land

It is known that Swaayambhuva's two sons ruled the land of seven islands in accordance with the Dharma.


तस्य वै दुहिता ब्रह्मन्देवहूतीति विश्रुता ।

पत्नी प्रजापतेरुक्ता कर्दमस्य त्वयानघ ॥३॥


तस्य वै दुहिता ब्रह्मन्-
his indeed daughter, O Brahman!
देवहूति-इति विश्रुता
Devahooti as well known
पत्नी प्रजापते:-उक्ता
wife of Prajaapati, as told
कर्दमस्य त्वया-अनघ
of Kardama, by you O Holy One!

O Holy Brahman! As was told by you, his daughter well known by the name of Devahooti, was the wife of Prajaapati Kardama.


तस्यां स वै महायोगी युक्तायां योगलक्षणै: ।

ससर्ज कतिधा वीर्यं तन्मे शुश्रूषवे वद ॥४॥


तस्याम् स: वै महायोगी
in her he (Kardama) indeed, the great Yogi
युक्तायाम् योग-लक्षणै:
endowed with yogic signs
ससर्ज कतिधा वीर्यम्
gave birth to how many issues
तत्-मे शुश्रूषवे वद
that to me willing to hear, do tell

I am willing to hear, so do tell me, that how many issues the great Yogi Kardama gave birth to from her (Devahooti) who was endowed with the signs of Yoga.


रूचिर्यो भगवान् ब्रह्मन्दक्षो वा ब्रह्मण: सुत: ।

यथा ससर्ज भूतानि लब्ध्वा भार्यां च मानवीम् ॥५॥


रूचि:-य: भगवान् ब्रह्मन्-
Ruchi, who the lord, O Brahman!
दक्ष: वा ब्रह्मण: सुत:
Daksha or Brahmaa's son
यथा ससर्ज भूतानि
as created the beings
लब्ध्वा भार्याम् च मानवीम्
by getting the wives, and Manu's (daughters)

And, O Brahman! Also tell, how Prajaapati lord Ruchi, and son of Brahmaa, Prajaapati Daksha, created the beings by getting the daughters of Manu as wives.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
प्रजा: सृजेति भगवान् कर्दमो ब्रह्मणोदित: ।

सरस्वत्यां तपस्तेपे सहस्राणां समा दश ॥६॥


प्रजा: सृज-इति भगवान्
’children beget' thus lord
कर्दम: ब्रह्मण-उदित:
Kardama by Brahmaa ordered
सरस्वत्याम् तप:-तेपे
on Saraswati (river) austerities practiced
सहस्राणाम् समा: दश
thousand years ten

When lord Kardama was ordered by Brahmaa, 'beget children,' thus, he practiced austerities on the banks of river Saraswati for ten thousand years.


तत: समाधियुक्तेन क्रियायोगेन कर्दम: ।

सम्प्रपेदे हरिं भक्त्या प्रपन्नवरदाशुषम् ॥७॥


तत: समाधि-युक्तेन
then, meditation along with
क्रिया-योगेन कर्दम:
by rituals of worship Kardama
सम्प्रपेदे हरिम् भक्त्या
worshipped Hari with devotion
प्रपन्न-वरद-आशुषम्
(Who) to the devout boons bestows

Then, along with meditation, Kardama also worshipped with rituals, Shree Hari, the bestower of boons to the devout.


तावत्प्रसन्नो भगवान् पुष्कराक्ष: कृते युगे ।

दर्शयामास तं क्षत्त: शाब्दं ब्रह्म दधद्वपु: ॥८॥


तावत्-प्रसन्न: भगवान्
then pleased The Lord
पुष्कराक्ष: कृते युगे
Lotus eyed, in Satya-yuga
दर्शयामास तम् क्षत्त:
revealed to him, O Vidura!
शाब्दम् ब्रह्म दधत्-वपु:
the Word Brahmaa, taking on form

O Vidura! then, The Lotus eyed Lord, being pleased with him revealed to him His essence taking the form of Word Brahma.


स तं विरजमर्काभं सितपद्मोत्पलस्रजम् ।

स्निग्धनीलालकव्रातवक्त्राब्जं विरजोऽम्बरम् ॥९॥


स: तम् विरजम्-अर्क-आभम्
He, him devoid of Rajoguna, (with) sun like lustre
सित-पद्म-उत्पल-स्रजम्
white lotus and lilies garlanded (wearing)
स्निग्ध-नील-अलक-व्रात-
sleek dark hair curls
वक्त्र-अब्जम् विरज:-अम्बरम्
face lotus, spotless silk (wearing)

Kardama saw Him devoid of Rajoguna, lusterous like the sun, wearing a garland of white lotuses and lilies, with a lotus like face surrounded by sleek dark curls of hair and wearing a spotless silk.


किरीटिनं कुण्डलिनं शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम् ।

श्वेतोत्पलक्रीडनकं मन: स्पर्शस्मितेक्षणम् ॥१०॥


किरीटिनम् कुण्डलिनम्
(adorned with) a crown, ear-rings
शङ्ख-चक्र-गदा-धरम्
conch, discuss and mace holding
श्वेत-उत्पल-क्रीडनकम्
white lotus for play
मन: स्पर्श-स्मित-ईक्षणम्
heart touching smiling look

He was adorned with a crown and earings. He held the conch, discuss and mace and also a white lotus to play with. His smiling look was heart touching.


विन्यस्तचरणाम्भोजमंसदेशे गरुत्मत: ।

खेऽवस्थितं वक्ष:श्रियं कौस्तुभकन्धरम् ॥११॥


विन्यस्त चरण-अम्भोजम्-
placing feet lotus
अंस-देशे गरुत्मत:
on the shoulder part of Garuda
खे-अवस्थितम्
in the sky standing
वक्ष:-श्रियम्
on the chest Laxmi
कौस्तुभ-कन्धरम्
and Kaustubha in the neck

Kardama saw Him standing in the sky with His feet placed on the shoulders of Garuda, having Laxmi on His chest and the Kaustubha jewel on His neck.


जातहर्षोऽपतन् मूर्ध्ना क्षितौ लब्धमनोरथ: ।

गीर्भिस्त्वभ्यगृणात्प्रीतिस्वभावात्मा कृताञ्जलि: ॥१२॥


जात-हर्ष:-अपतत्- मूर्ध्ना
with up surging joy, lay prostrate with head
क्षितौ लब्ध-मनोरथ:
on the ground, fulfilled of desire
गीर्भि:-तु-अभ्यगृणात्-
with words indeed, sang praises
प्रीति-स्वभाव-आत्मा
love naturally minded
कृत-अञ्जलि:
folding hands

He, fulfilled of desire, lay prostrate with his head touching the ground. With his mind naturally full of love, he then sang His praises with words and with hands folded in prayer.


ऋषि:-उवाच -

जुष्टं बताद्याखिलसत्त्वराशे: सांसिध्यमक्ष्णोस्तव दर्शनान्न: ।

यद्दर्शनं जन्मभिरीड्य सद्भिराशासते योगिनो रूढयोगा: ॥१३॥


जुष्टम् बत-अद्य-
repository, indeed today
अखिल-सत्त्व-राशे:
of all goodness wealth
सांसिध्यम्-अक्ष्णो:-
the fruit of the eyes
तव दर्शनात्-न:
by Your sight, to us
यत्-दर्शनम् जन्मभि:-
which sight by births,
ईड्य
O Praiseworthy Lord!
सद्भि:-आशासते
by good, hope
योगिन: रूढयोगा:
Yogis pertaining to Samaadhi

O Praiseworthy Lord!, the repository of all wealth of goodness, today we have got the fruits of the eyes by Your sight. It is the sight which the Yogis covet by succesively getting good births and by resorting to samaadhi.


ये मायया ते हतमेधसस्त्वत् पादारविन्दं भवसिन्धुपोतम् ।

उपासते कामलवाय तेषाम् रासीश कामान्निरयेऽपि ये स्यु: ॥१४॥


ये मायया ते हत-मेधस:-
those (who) by Maayaa Your, hard headed
त्वत् पाद-अरविन्दम्
Your feet lotuses
भव-सिन्धु-पोतम्
the world ocean ferries
उपासते काम-लवाय
worship for desires trivial
तेषाम् रासीश
to them O Lord!
कामान्-निरये-अपि
desire in the hell also
ये स्यु:
which may be

O Lord! Those hard headed beings, because of Your Maayaa, worship Your lotus feet, which are ferries for the mundane world, for trivial desires. You grant them also, which may be got even in hell.


तथा स चाहं परिवोढुकाम: समानशीलां गृहमेधधेनुम् ।

उपेयिवान्मूलमशेषमूलं दुराशय: कामदुघाङ्घ्रिपस्य ॥१५॥


तथा स: च-अहम्
and that and I
परिवोढु:-काम:
to marry wanting
समान-शीलाम्
of like disposition
गृहमेध-धेनुम्
for household (proving to be) a cow
उपेयिवान्-मूलम्-
approached the root
अशेष-मूलम् दुराशय:
of endless root, the impure
कामदुह्-अङ्घ्रिपस्य
desire yielding feet'

And that impure I, wanting to marry a girl of like disposition, who may perove to be plenty yeilding cow like, for a household, has approached your feet, the root of the endless desire fulfilling root.


प्रजापतेस्ते वचसाधीश तन्त्या लोक: किलायं कामहतोऽनुबद्ध: ।

अहं च लोकानुगतो वहामि बलिं च शुक्लानिमिषाय तुभ्यम् ॥१६॥


प्रजापते:-ते वचसा-अधीश
O Lord of universe! By Your word, O Ruler of everything!
तन्त्या लोक: किल-अयम्
cord, this world certainly this
काम-हत:-अनुबद्ध:
desire smitten is bound
अहम् च लोक-अनुगत:
I and the world following
वहामि बलिम् च
carry offerings and
शुक्ल-अनिमिषाय तुभ्यम्
O Bright One! For Time incarnate You

O Lord of the Universe! O Ruler of everything! By Your word cord this desire smitten world is bound. O Bright One! I, also follow the ways of the world, and carry offerings to Time incarnate You.


लोकांश्च लोकानुगतान् पशूंश्च हित्वा श्रितास्ते चरणातपत्रम् ।

परस्परं त्वद्गुणवादसीधुपीयूषनिर्यापितदेहधर्मा: ॥१७॥


लोकान्-च लोक-अनुगतान्
(materialistic) people and people following them
पशून्-च हित्वा श्रिता:-ते
animal like and ignoring, sheltered they
चरण-आतपत्रम्
by (Your) feet umbrella
परस्परम् त्वत्-गुण-वाद-
amongst themselves, Your praises speak of
सीधु-पीयूष-निर्यापित-
intoxicating nectre satiate
देह-धर्मा:
(their) body necessities

Your devotees, ingnore ignore like animals, the materialistic people and also the people who follow them. They take shelter under Your umbrella like feet, and speak about Your praises among themselves and thus by drinking the intoxicating necter satiate the necessities of the body.


न तेऽजराक्षभ्रमिरायुरेषां त्रयोदशारं त्रिशतं षष्ठिपर्व ।

षण्नेम्यनन्तच्छदि यत्त्रिणाभि कराल स्रोतो जगदाच्छिद्य धावत् ॥१८॥


न ते-अजर-अक्ष
do not, of Your (devotee's) O Imperishable Brahma! The axis
भ्रमि:-आयु:-एषाम्
rotating age of these (devotees)
त्रयोदश-अरम्
of thirteen (months') spokes
त्रिशतम् षष्ठि-पर्व
three hundred and sixty joints
षट्-नेमि-अनन्त-छदि
six rims (seasons), countless moments (sharp edged)
यत्-त्रि-नाभि:-
that three navels comprising (three divisions of four months)
कराल स्रोत:
of tremendous velocity
जगत्-आच्छिद्य धावत्
the world cutting (shortening the time) keeps rotating

O Unperishible Brahman! Your wheel of Time, which has thirteen spokes (months), three hundred and sixty joints (days), six rims (seasons) sharp edged (countless moments) and three navels (three divisions of four months), keeps rotating with tremendous velocity, and keeps cutting asunder the life span of the whole creation, that, cannot touch the age of Your devotees.


एक: स्वयं सञ्जगत: सिसृक्षयाद्वितीययाऽऽत्मन्नधियोगमायया ।

सृजस्यद: पासि पुनर्ग्रसिष्यसे यथोर्णनाभिर्भगवन् स्वशक्तिभि: ॥१९॥


एक: स्वयम् सन्-
One Yourself being
जगत: सिसृक्षया-
the world's creation willing
अद्वितीयया-
no other (than You)
आत्मन्-अधि-योगमायया
in Yourself present, by Yoga Maayaa
सृजसि-अद: पासि पुन:-
create the world, preserve, and again
ग्रसिष्यसे यथा-उर्ण-नाभि:-
reabsorb, just as the spider's cobweb
भगवन् स्व-शक्तिभि:
O Lord! By Your own potencies

O Lord! Though You are Only One, with the will to create, by Your own potencies, and by Yoga Maayaa which is no other than You, and which is present in You, You do create, preserve and again reabsorb the world , just as the spider creates preserves and reabsorbs its cobweb.


नैतद्बताधीश पदं तवेप्सितं यन्मायया नस्तनुषे भूतसूक्ष्मम् ।

अनुग्रहायास्त्वपि यर्हि मायया लसत्तुलस्या तनुवा विलक्षित: ॥२०॥


न-एतत्-बत्-अधीश
not this of course, O Supreme Lord!
पदम् तव-ईप्सितम्
state by You is favoured
यत्-मायया न:-तनुषे
that by Maayaa, we may draw
भूत-सूक्ष्मम्
the sense perceptions
अनुग्रहाय-अस्तु-अपि
for our benefit may be also
यर्हि मायया
so that by Maayaa (only)
लसत्-तुलस्या
adorned with Tulasi (garland)
तनु-वा विलक्षित:
Your form is seen

O Supreme Lord! Though You do not appreciate that we draw from Maayaa the sense perceptions, yet, it may proove to be of benefit for us, because we see Your form adorned with the Tulsi garland.


तं त्वानुभूत्योपरतक्रियार्थं स्वमायया वर्तितलोकतन्त्रम् ।

नमाम्यभीक्ष्णं नमनीयपादसरोजमल्पीयसि कामवर्षम् ॥२१॥


तम् त्वा-अनुभूत्य-
That You by Self-Realization
उपरत-क्रियार्थम्
are indifferent to actions' results
स्व-मायया
by Your own Maayaa
वर्तित-लोक-तन्त्रम्
conduct the world's affairs
नमामि-अभीक्ष्णम्
I bow every moment
नमनीय-पाद-सरोजम्-
worthy to be bowed feet lotuses
अल्पीयसि काम-वर्षम्
for a little reverence blessings shower

That You, by Self-Realizarion, are indifferent to the fruits of actions, and conduct the affairs of the world by Your own Maayaa, and but for a small adoration by desiring people, You shower them with desired blessings. I repeatedly bow to the lotus feet of Yours which are worthy of reverence.


ऋषि:-उवाच -
The sage (Maitreya) said -
इत्यव्यलीकं प्रणुतोऽब्जनाभस्तमावभाषे वचसामृतेन ।

सुपर्णपक्षोपरि रोचमान: प्रेमस्मितोद्वीक्षणविभ्रमद्भ्रू: ॥२२॥


इति-अव्यलीकम् प्रणुत:-
thus sincerely prayed,
अब्जनाभ:-तम्-आबभाषे
lotus naveled (Lord), to him said
वचसा-अमृतेन
with words sweet as nectre
सुपर्ण-पक्ष-उपरि रोचमान:
on Gaduda's shoulders shining
प्रेम-स्मित-उद्वीक्षण
with loving smile beholding
विभ्रमत्-भ्रू::
and quivering eyebrows

Thus, the lotus naveled Lord was prayed sincerely. He shone on the shoulders of Garuda and said to Kardama in necter like sweet words,looking at him with a loving smile, and with quivering eyebrows.


श्री-भगवान्-उवाच -
The Lord said -
विदित्वा तव चैत्यं मे पुरैव समयोजि तत् ।

यदर्थमात्मनियमैस्त्वयैवाहं समर्चित: ॥२३॥


विदित्वा तव चैत्यम्
knowing your mind
मे पुरा-एव
by me already
समयोजि तत्
is arranged that
यत्-अर्थम्-आत्म-नियमै:-
for which sake, by self discipline
त्वया-एव-अहम् समर्चित:
by you indeed I am worshipped

As I knew what was in your mind, I have already arranged for it, because of which you have worshipped me with self discipline.


न वै जातु मृषैव स्यात्प्रजाध्यक्ष मदर्हणम् ।

भवद्विधेष्वतितरां मयि संगृभितात्मनाम् ॥२४॥


न वै जातु मृषा-एव स्यात्-
not indeed done, vain only becomes
प्रजा-अध्यक्ष मत्-अर्हणम्
O lord of created beings! my worship
भवत्-विधेषु-अतितराम्
yourself like intense
मयि संगृभित-आत्मनाम्
in Me fixed minded

O lord of created beings! Indeed worship to me does not go vain, particularly when it is done by people like you who have their minds fixed on Me.


प्रजापतिसुत: सम्राण्मनुर्विख्यातमङ्गल: ।

ब्रह्मावर्तं योऽधिवसन् शास्ति सप्तार्णवां महीम् ॥२५॥


प्रजापति:-सुत: सम्राट्-मनु:
Brahmaa's son, the emperor Manu
विख्यात-मङ्गल:
of well known fame
ब्रह्मावर्तम् य:-अधिवसन्
in Brahmaavarta, who residing,
शास्ति सप्तार्णवाम् महीम्
rules seven seas' land

Brahmaa's son, the emperor Manu who is of renowned fame, resides in Brahmaavarta and rules this land of seven seas.


स चेह विप्र राजर्षिर्महिष्या शतरूपया ।

आयास्यति दिदृक्षुस्त्वां परश्वो धर्मकोविद: ॥२६॥


स: च-इह विप्र
he and here, O Sage!
राजर्षि:-महिष्या शतरूपया
the royal sage with queen Shataroopaa
आयास्यति दिदृक्षु:-त्वाम्
will come to see you,
परश्व: धर्म-कोविद:
day after tomorrow, (who is) well versed in righteousness

O Sage! That royal sage, who is well versed in righteousness, along with his queen Shataroopaa, will come here day after tomorrow, to see you.


आत्मजामसितापाङ्गीं वय:शीलगुणान्विताम् ।

मृगयन्तीं पतिं दास्यत्यनुरूपाय ते प्रभो ॥२७॥


आत्मजाम्-असित-अपाङ्गीम्
daughter, dark-eyed
वय:-शील-गुण-अन्विताम्
of age, noble character, and virtues possessed
मृगयन्तीम् पतिम् दास्यति-
looking for a husband, will give
अनुरूपाय ते प्रभो
alike to you, O Kardama!

O Kardama! He is looking for a suitable match for his dark-eyed daughter, who is of the right age, noble character, and is possessed of virtues. He will give her to you, who are like her.


समाहितं ते हृदयं यत्रेमान् परिवत्सरान् ।

सा त्वां ब्रह्मन्नृप वधू: काममाशु भजिष्यति ॥२८॥


समाहितम् ते हृदयम्
fixed your mind
यत्र-इमान् परिवत्सरान्
on which (type) all these long years
सा त्वाम् ब्रह्म नृपवधू:
that to you O Sage! The princess
कामम्-आशु भजिष्यति
desiring, soon will serve

For many long years your mind was fixed on what type of wife you wanted, that desired princess, O Sage! Will soon serve you.


या त आत्मभृतं वीर्यं नवधा प्रसविष्यति ।

वीर्ये त्वदीये ऋषय आधास्यन्त्यञ्जसाऽऽत्मन: ॥२९॥


या ते आत्म-भृतम् वीर्यम्
she your own, placed (in her) seed
नवधा प्रसविष्यति
nine (daughters) will bear
वीर्ये त्वदीये ऋषय:
daughters, in your sages (Mareechi etc.)
आधास्यन्ति-अञ्जसा-आत्मन:
will beget easily sons

Sown in her, by your own seed, she will bear nine daughters. In your daughters, Marichi and other sages will easily beget sons.


त्वं च सम्यगनुष्ठाय निदेशं म उशत्तम: ।

मयि तीर्थीकृताशेष क्रियार्थो मां प्रपत्स्यसे ॥३०॥


त्वम् च सम्यक्-अनुष्ठाय
you and properly carrying
निदेशम् मे उशत्तम:
commands my, pure hearted
मयि तीर्थीकृत-अशेष
in Me placing all
क्रियार्थ: माम् प्रपत्स्यसे
actions' fruits, to Me will attain

And you will become pure hearted by properly carrying out My commands, and placing all the fruits of your actions into Me, will attain Me.


कृत्वा दयां च जीवेषु दत्त्वा चाभयमात्मवान् ।

मय्यात्मानं सह जगद् द्रक्ष्यस्यात्मनि चापि माम् ॥३१॥


कृत्वा दयाम् च जीवेषु
being compassionate and to beings
दत्त्वा च-अभयम्-आत्मवान्
giving and security self-realized
मयि-आत्मानम् सह जगत्
in Me yourself, along with the world
द्रक्ष्यसि-आत्मनि च-अपि माम्
will see, and in (your) self, and also Me

You will be self realized by being compassionate to beings and giving them security. Then you will see yourself in Me along with the world and will also see Me in yourself.


सहाहं स्वांशकलया त्वद्वीर्येण महामुने ।

तव क्षेत्रे देवहूत्यां प्रणेष्ये तत्त्वसंहिताम् ॥३२॥


सह-अहम् स्व-अंश-कलया
manifesting I, by My part divinity
त्वत्-वीर्येण महामुने
by your daughters, O Great sage!
तव क्षेत्रे देवहूत्याम्
in your wife Devahooti
प्रणेष्ये तत्त्व-संहिताम्
(I) will instruct the system of elements' categories

O Great sage! Manifesting a part of My divinity through your daughters, in your wife Devahooti, I will instruct the system of the categories of elements (Saankhya).


मैत्रेय उवाच -

एवं तमनुभाष्याथ भगवान् प्रत्यगक्षज: ।

जगाम बिन्दुसरस: सरस्वत्या परिश्रितात् ॥३३॥


एवम् तम्-अनुभाष्य-अथ
thus to him saying, then
भगवान् प्रत्यक्-अक्षज:
The Lord, seen by inner eye
जगाम बिन्दुसरस:
went from Bindusarovara
सरस्वत्या परिश्रितात्
by Saraswati (river) encircled

Having spoken to sage Kardama, thus, The Lord,Who can be seen only with the inner eye, went away from Bindusarover, which is encircled by the river Saraswati.


निरीक्षतस्तस्य ययावशेषसिद्धेश्वराभिष्टुतसिद्धमार्ग: ।

आकर्णयन् पत्ररथेन्द्रपक्षैरूच्चारितं स्तोममुदीर्णसाम ॥३४॥


निरीक्षत:-तस्य
while watching his (Kardama)
ययौ-अशेष-सिद्धेश्वर:-
went away, by the great sages
अभिष्टुत-सिद्धमार्ग:
praised by, The Lord of Vaikuntha
आकर्णयन् पत्ररथेन्द्र-पक्षै:
hearing, Gaduda's wings'
उच्चारितम् स्तोमम्-उदीर्ण-साम
uttered, hymns taken from Saama (Veda)

As sage Kardama looked on, The Lord of Vaikuntha went away as the great sages sang His praise, and the wings of Gaduda uttered the hymns taken from the Saama Veda.


अथ सम्प्रस्थिते शुक्ले कर्दमो भगवानृषि: ।

आस्ते स्म बिन्दुसरसि तं कालं प्रतिपालयन् ॥३५॥


अथ सम्प्रस्थिते शुक्ले
thereafter, (when) departed The Lord
कर्दम: भगवान्-ऋषि:
Kardama the lord sage
आस्ते स्म बिन्दुसरसि
remained at Bindusarovara
तम् कालम् प्रतिपालयन्
that time awaiting

Thyereafter, when The Lord had departed, the lord sage Kardama remained at Bindusarovar, awaiting that time.


मनु: स्यन्दनमास्थाय शातकौम्भपरिच्छदम् ।

आरोप्य स्वां दुहितरं सभार्य: पर्यटन्महीम् ॥३६॥


मनु: स्यन्दनम्-आस्थाय
Manu in the chariot mounted
शातकौम्भ-परिच्छदम्
gold plate covered
आरोप्य स्वाम् दुहितरम्
put his daughter,
सभार्य: पर्यटन्-महीम्
along with wife, journeyed the globe

Putting his daughter in the chariot, covered by gold plate, Manu, along with his wife mounted the chariot and journied all through the globe.


तस्मिन् सुधन्वन्नहनि भगवान् यत्समादिशत् ।

उपायादाश्रमपदं मुने: शान्तव्रतस्य तत् ॥३७॥


तस्मिन् सुधन्वन्-अहनि
in that, O Vidura! Day
भगवान् यत्-समादिशत्
That Lord what had indicated
उपायात्-आश्रम-पदम्
reached the hermitage door
मुने: शान्त-व्रतस्य तत्
of the sage (Kardama) completed the vows that

O Vidura! on that same day which The Lord had indicated, and when the sage had completed his vows, Manu reached the door of sage Kardama's heritage.


यस्मिन् भगवतो नेत्रान्न्यपतन्नश्रुबिन्दव: ।

कृपया सम्परीतस्य प्रपन्नेऽर्पितया भृशम् ॥३८॥


यस्मिन् भगवत: नेत्रात्-
in which (Bindusarovara), from Lord's eyes
न्यपतत्-अश्रु-बिन्दव:
had fallen tear drops
कृपया सम्परीतस्य
with compassion overwhelmed
प्रपन्ने-अर्पितया भृशम्
seeking protection, welled very much

In the lake, Bindusarover, drops of tears which had welled in the eyes of The Lord, had fallen, when He was overwhelmed with compassion, as the sage Kardama had saught His protection.


तद्वै बिन्दुसरो नाम सरस्वत्या परिप्लुतम् ।

पुण्यं शिवामृतजलं महर्षिगणसेवितम् ॥३९॥


तत्-वै बिन्दुसर: नाम
that indeed, is Bindusarovara named
सरस्वत्या परिप्लुतम्
by Saraswati encircled
पुण्यम् शिव-अमृत-जलम्
holy pure nectre water
महर्षि-गण सेवितम्
great sages by resorted to

That lake indeed is thus named as Bindusarover, which is encircled by the river Saraswati. Its water is holy, pure and necter like and is frequently resorted to by eminent sages.


पुण्यद्रुमलताजालै: कूजत्पुष्पमृगद्विजै: ।

सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पाढ्यं वनराजिश्रियान्वितम् ॥४०॥


पुण्य-द्रुम-लता-जालै:
holy trees', creepers' clusters
कूजत्-पुष्प-मृग-द्विजै:
replete with flowers, animals and birds
सर्व-ऋतु-फल-पुष्प-आढ्यम्
all seasons' fruits and flowers' abundance
वनराजि श्रिया-अन्वितम्
forest trees' beauty containing

That place was full of holy trees, clusters of creepers, replete with flowers, sacred animals and birds, fruits and flowers of all seasons were in abundence, and contained the beauty of forest trees.


मत्तद्विजगणैर्घुष्टं मत्तभ्रमरविभ्रमम् ।

मत्तबर्हिनटाटोपमाह्वयन्मत्तकोकिलम् ॥४१॥


मत्त-द्विज-गणै:-घुष्टम्
joyful birds' flocks' (chirpings) resounding
मत्त-भ्रमर-विभ्रमम्
intoxicated bees humming
मत्त-बर्हि-नट-आटोपम्-
merry peacocks' gay dancing
आह्वयन्-मत्त-कोकिलम्
calling of merry cuckoos

The lake resounded with the chirpings of the flocks of birds, humming of intoxicated bees, gay dancing of merry peacocks, and the calling of merry cuckoos.


कदम्बचम्पकाशोककरञ्जबकुलासनै: ।

कुन्दमन्दारकुटजैश्चूतपोतैरलङ्कृतम् ॥४२॥


कदम्ब-चम्पक-अशोक-
by Kadamba, Champak, Asoka,
करञ्ज-बकुल-आसनै:
Karanja, Bakula, Aasanas,
कुन्द-मन्दार-कुटजै:-
Kunda, Mandaara, Kootaja,
चूत-पोतै:-अलङ्कृतम्
Mango young trees was adorned

That place was adorned by the trees of Kadamba, Champaka, Ashoka, Karanja, Bakula, Aasana, Kunda, Mandaara, Kootaja, and young trees of Mango.


कारण्डवै: प्लवैर्हंसै: कुररैर्जलकुक्कुटै: ।

सारसैश्चक्रवाकैश्च चकोरैर्वल्गुकूजितम् ॥४३॥


कारण्डवै: प्लवै:-हंसै:
(by the calls of ) a sort of duck, swimming swans
कुररै:-जल-कुक्कुटै:
ospreys, water fowls
सारसै:-चक्रवाकै:-च
cranes, and the ruddy goose
चकोरै:-वल्गु-कूजितम्
the partridges was well resounded

It was well resounded by the calls of the ducks, swimming swans, ospreys, water fowls, cranes, the ruddy goose, and the partridges.


तथैव हरिणै: क्रोडै: श्वाविद्गवयकुञ्जरै: ।

गौपुच्छैर्हरिभिर्मर्कैर्नकुलैर्नाभिभिर्वृत्तम् ॥४४॥


तथा-एव हरिणै: क्रोडै:
and also by deers, boars,
श्वाविद्-गवय-कुञ्जरै:
porcupines, Gayals, elephants,
गौपुच्छै:-हरिभि:-मर्कै:-
baboons, lions, monkeys,
नकुलै:-नाभिभि:-वृत्तम्
mongoose and musk-deer infested

And it was also infested by deers, boars, porcupines, Gayals, elephants, baboons, lions, monkeys, mongoose, and musk-deers.


प्रविश्य तत्तीर्थवरमादिराज: सहात्मज: ।

ददर्श मुनिमासीनं तस्मिन् हुतहुताशनम् ॥४५॥


प्रविश्य तत्-तीर्थ-वरम्-
entering that holy place
आदिराज: सह-आत्मज:
the first monarch (Manu) with daughter
ददर्श मुनिम्-आसीनम्
saw the sage sitting
तस्मिन् हुत-हुताशनम्
there, (having performed) oblations into the fire

The first monarch, Manu, entered the holy place with his daughter, and there he saw the sage sitting, having performed oblations into the fire.


विद्योतमानं वपुषा तपस्युर्ग्रयुजा चिरम् ।

नातिक्षामं भगवत: स्निग्धापाङ्गावलोकनात् ।

तद्व्याहृतामृतकलापीयूषश्रवणेन च ॥४६॥


विद्योतमानम् वपुषा
brilliant by body
तपसि-उर्ग्र-युजा चिरम्
(though) in austerities extreme engaged for long
न-अति-क्षामम् भगवत:
not very feeble, by The Lord's
स्निग्ध-अपाङ्ग-अवलोकनात्
loving side glances looking
तद्-व्याहृत-अमृत-कला
by Him spoken sweet moon like
पीयूष-श्रवणेन च
nectre hearing and

Though sage Kardama was engaged in extreme austerities for a long time, he did not look feeble, rather his body looked brilliant. It was because The Lord looked at him with loving side-glances and spoke to him words sweet as the moon and necter to the ears.


प्रांशुंपद्मपलाशाक्षं जटिलं चीरवाससम् ।

उपसंसृत्य मलिनं यथार्हणमसंस्कृतम् ॥४७॥


प्रांशुम्-पद्म-पलाश-अक्षम्
tall, lotus petals (like) eyes
जटिलम् चीर-वाससम्
matted haired, rags wearing
उपसंसृत्य मलिनम्
coming close, (looked) untidy
यथा-अर्हणम्-असंस्कृतम्
like a gem unpolished

The sage was tall, had big eyes like the leaves of lotus, had matted hair, was wearing rags, and when looked at from near, he was untidy like an unpolished gem.


अथोटजमुपायातं नृदेवं प्रणतं पुर: ।

सपर्यया पर्यगृह्णात्प्रतिनन्द्यानुरूपया ॥४८॥


अथ-उटजम्-उपायातम्
then the hermitage having come to,
नृदेवम् प्रणतम् पुर:
the monarch bowing in front
सपर्यया पर्यगृह्णात्-
with hospitality welcomed
प्रतिनन्द्य-अनुरूपया
with blessing with due honour

The monarch having come to his hermitage, bowed in front of the sage. Seeing him,the sage welcomed him with hospitality and blessed him with due honour.


गृहीतार्हणमासीनं संयतं प्रीणयन्मुनि: ।

स्मरन् भगवदादेशमित्याह श्लक्ष्णया गिरा ॥४९॥


गृहीत-अर्हणम्-आसीनम्
received the hospitality, seated
संयतम् प्रीणयन्-मुनि:
composed, delighting (him) the sage (Kardama)
स्मरन् भगवद्-आदेशम्-
recalling The Lord's instructions
इति-आह श्लक्ष्णया गिरा
this said, in a soft voice

As Manu had received the hospitality, and was seated calmly, the sage, Kardama, recalled The Lord's instructions, and delighted the monarch by saying thus in a soft voice.


नूनं चङ्क्रमणं देव सतां संरक्षणाय ते ।

वधाय चासतां यस्त्वं हरे: शक्तिर्हि पालिनी ॥५०॥


नूनम् चङ्क्रमणम् देव
undoubtedly, tour of O lord!
सतांम् संरक्षणाय ते
of the virtuous protection, yours
वधाय च-असताम् य:-त्वम्
and for killing the wicked, that you (are)
हरे: शक्ति:-हि पालिनी
Shree Hari's power indeed of protecting

O lord! Undoubtedly, your tour is for the protection of the virtuous and for the killing of the wicked. You indeed are The Lord's power of protection.


योऽर्केन्द्वग्नीन्द्रवायूनां यमधर्मप्रचेतसाम् ।

रूपाणि स्थान आधत्से तस्मै शुक्लाय ते नम: ॥५१॥


य:-अर्क-इन्दु-अग्नि-इन्द्र-
(you) who sun, moon, fire, Indra ,
वायूनाम् यम-धर्म-प्रचेतसाम्
the winds, Yama, Dharma and Varuna
रूपाणि स्थान आधत्से
forms and duties take on (as and when required)
तस्मै शुक्लाय ते नम:
to that Vishnu, you (I) bow

I bow to you who as and when requiered, take on the form and duties of the sun-god, the moon-god, the Fire-god, Indra, the Wind-god, Yama, Dharma and Varuna. You are virtually Lord Vishnu.


न यदा रथमास्थाय जैत्रं मणिगणार्पितम् ।

विस्फूर्जच्चण्डकोदण्डो रथेन त्रासयन्नघान् ॥५२॥


न यदा रथम्-आस्थाय
not until, in the chariot mounted
जैत्रम् मणि-गण-अर्पितम्
victorious, with gems many studded
विस्फूर्जत्-चण्ड-कोदण्ड:
twanging the fierce bow
रथेन त्रासयन्-अघान्
by the chariot terrorising the wicked

Not until you mount your many gems studded victorious chariot, and terrorise the wicked with the twanging of your fierce bow, and chariot…


स्वसैन्यचरणक्षुण्णं वेपयन्मण्डलं भुव: ।

विकर्षन् बृहतीं सेनां पर्यटस्यंशुमानिव ॥५३॥


स्व-सैन्य-चरण-क्षुण्णम्
by (your) own army feet trampling
वेपयन्-मण्डलम् भुव:
trembling the entire globe
विकर्षन् बृहतीम् सेनाम्
taking along great army
पर्यटन्-अंशुमान्-इव
going round, sun like

You go round the entire globe, like the sun, with your large army and tremble it with the foot of the soldiers…


तदैव सेतव: सर्वे वर्णाश्रमनिबन्धना: ।

भगवद्रचिता राजन् भिद्येरन् बत दस्युभि: ॥५४॥


तदा-एव सेतव: सर्वे
then only, bridges all
वर्ण-आश्रम-निबन्धना:
of Varnaas and Aashramas, held together
भगवद्-रचिता: राजन्
by The Lord made, O King!
भिद्येरन् बत दस्युभि:
will be broken indeed by rogues

The laws which are held togather into the system of Varnas and Ashramas, which were made by The Lord, will be broken by the rogues.


अधर्मश्च समेधेत लोलुपैर्व्यङ्कुशैर्नृभि: ।

शयाने त्वयि लोकोऽयं दस्युग्रस्तो विनङ्क्ष्यति ॥५५॥


अधर्म:-च समेधेत
unrighteousness and will prevail
लोलुपै:-व्यङ्कुशै:-नृभि:
by greedy uncontrolled people
शयाने त्वयि लोक:-अयम्
(when) uncaring you are, world this
दस्यु-ग्रस्त: विनङ्क्ष्यति
by rogues infested, will perish

Un-righteousness will prevail because of greedy and uncontrolled people. If you do not care, this world will be infested by rogues and will perish.


अथापि पृच्छे त्वां वीर यदर्थं त्वमिहागत: ।

तद्वयं निर्व्यलीकेन प्रतिपद्यामहे हृदा ॥५६॥


अथ-अपि पृच्छे त्वाम् वीर
then too, (I) ask you, O Valiant one!
यत्-अर्थम् त्वम्-इह-आगत:
by what purpose you here have come
तत्-वयम् निर्व्यलीकेन
that (purpose) we, without difficulty
प्रतिपद्यामहे हृदा
will handle heartily

Yet, I ask you the purpose for which you have come here. That purpose we both, heartily and without difficulty will handle.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीय स्कन्धे एकविंशोऽध्याय : ॥२१॥


Thus ends the twenty-first discourse in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
