मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
एवमाविष्कृताशेषगुणकर्मोदयो मुनिम् ।

सव्रीड इव तं सम्राडुपारतमुवाच ह ॥१॥


एवम्-आविष्कृत-अशेष-
thus extolled, entire
गुण-कर्म-उदय: मुनिम्
virtues and of actions' power to the sage
सव्रीड इव तम् सम्राट-
as though humbly, him, the monarch
उपारतम्-उवाच ह
leading a retired life, said indeed

The monarch was humbled to hear about his virtues and the effect of his actions being praised. He then, to the sage who was leading a retired life, said thus.


मनु:-उवाच -
Manu said -
ब्रह्मासृजत्स्वमुखतो युष्मानात्मपरीप्सया ।

छन्दोमयस्तपोविद्यायोगयुक्तानलम्पटान् ॥२॥


ब्रह्मा-असृजत्-स्व-मुखत:
Brahmaa created, from his own mouth
युष्मान्-आत्म-परीप्सया
you people (the Braahmanas), himself to protect
छन्दोमय:-तप:-विद्या-
Veda incarnate, austerities, knowledge
योग-युक्तान्-अलम्पटान्
and yoga containing, dispassionate

Veda incarnate Brahma created you and the Braahmanas who are dispassionate and who are contained with austerities, knowledge and yoga, to protect himself (in the form of Vedas).


तत्त्राणायासृजच्चास्मान्दो:सहस्रात्सहस्रपात् ।

हृदयं तस्य हि ब्रह्म क्षत्रमङ्गं प्रचक्षते ॥३॥


तत्-त्राणाय-असृजत्-च-अस्मान्-
for their protection, created and us
दो:-सहस्रात्-सहस्र-पात्
from arms thousands, He the thousand feet one
हृदयम् तस्य हि ब्रह्म
heart his indeed Braahmanas
क्षत्रम्-अङ्गम् प्रचक्षते
and the Kshatriyas, limbs is said

Brahmaa, who has thousand feet, created us, from his thousand arms, for the protection of the Braahmanas, and it is said that the Braahmana's are his heart and we Kshatriyas are his limbs.


अतो ह्यन्योन्यमात्मानं ब्रह्म क्षत्रं च रक्षत: ।

रक्षति स्माव्ययो देव: स य: सदसदात्मक: ॥४॥


अत: हि अन्य:-अन्यम्-
that is why each other
आत्मानम् ब्रह्म क्षत्रम्
and themselves, the Braahmanas Kshatriyas
च रक्षत: रक्षति स्म-
and protected, protects
अव्ययो देव: स: य:
The Imperishable Lord He, Who
सत्-असत्-आत्मक:
is of (both) the cause and effect nature

That is why the Braahmanas and the Kshatriyas protect each other and also themselves. In fact the Unperishable Lord, Who is of the nature of both cause and effect also protects them.


तव सन्दर्शनादेवच्छिन्ना मे सर्वसंशया: ।

यत्स्वयं भगवान् प्रीत्या धर्ममाह रिरक्षिषो: ॥५॥


तव सन्दर्शनात्-एव-छिन्ना
by your sight only have cleared
मे सर्व-संशया:
my all doubts
यत्-स्वयम् भगवान् प्रीत्या
in as much, yourself, the lord lovingly
धर्मम्-आह रिरक्षिषो:
the virtues explained, willing to protect

All my doubts have been cleared by your sight, in as much that you have lovingly explained the virtues required of a king who is willing to protect.


दिष्ट्या मे भगवान् दृष्टो दुर्दर्शो योऽकृतात्मनाम् ।

दिष्ट्या पादरज: स्पृष्टं शीर्ष्णा मे भवत: शिवम् ॥६॥


दिष्ट्या मे भगवान् दृष्ट:
fortunately, by me (you) lord are seen
दुर्दर्श: य: अकृत्-
difficult to be seen who, (is) by (those who) have not
आत्मनाम् दिष्ट्या
controlled minds, fortunately
पाद-रज: स्पृष्टम्
feet's' dust is touched
शीर्ष्णा मे भवत: शिवम्
by head by me, of your blessed

It is fortunate that I have met you, because you are not easily seen by people who have not controlled their minds. I am fortunate that I have touched the blessed dust of your feet with my head.


दिष्ट्या त्वयानुशिष्टोऽहं कृतश्चानुग्रहो महान् ।

अपावृतै: कर्णरन्ध्रैर्जुष्टा दिष्ट्योशतीर्गिर: ॥७॥


दिष्ट्या त्वया-अनुशिष्ट:-
fortunately, by you (was) directed
अहम् कृत:-च-
I, (on me) was done and
अनुग्रह: महान्
favour great
अपावृतै: कर्णरन्ध्रै:-
with open ear holes,
जुष्टाम् दिष्ट्या-उशती:-गिर:
have heard, fortunately pure words

Fortuntely, it was a great favour done to me that you have directed me, and fortunately also I have listened to your pure words with open ear holes, that is, attentively.


स भवान्दुहितृस्नेहपरिक्लिष्टात्मनो मम ।

श्रोतुमर्हसि दीनस्य श्रावितं कृपया मुने ॥८॥


स: भवान्-दुहितृ-स्नेह-
that you, daughter's affection
परिक्लिष्ट-आत्मन: मम
troubled minded my
श्रोतुम्-अर्हसि दीनस्य
to hear capable, a humble person's
श्रावितम् कृपया मुने
prayer, benevolently, O sage!

O Sage! That you are competent to hear the humble prayer of me whose mind is troubled by the affection of his daughter.


प्रियव्रतोत्तानपदो: स्वसेयं दुहिता मम ।

अन्विच्छति पतिं युक्तं वय:शीलगुणादिभि: ॥९॥


प्रियव्रत-उत्तानपदो: स्वसा-
Priyavrata (and) Uttaanapaada's
इयम् दुहिता मम
sister this, daughter mine
अन्विच्छति पतिम् युक्तम्
is desirous of a husband worthy
वय:-शील-गुण-आदिभि:
in age, character and virtues

This daughter of mine, Priyavrata and Uttaanapaada's sister, is desirous of a worthy match for her, in terms of age, character and virtues.


यदा तु भवत: शीलश्रुतरूपवयोगुणान् ।

अश्रुणोन्नारदादेषा त्वय्यासीत्कृतनिश्चया ॥१०॥


यदा तु भवत: शील-श्रुत-
when indeed, (of) your character, knowledge,
रूप-वय:-गुणान्
looks age and virtues
अश्रुणोत्-नारदात्-एषा त्वयि-
had heard from Naarada, she in you
आसीत्-कृत-निश्चया
was to make (you husband) determined

From when she had heard of your character, learning, looks, age and virtues, from Naarada, she was determined to make you her husband.


तत्प्रतीच्छ द्विजाग्र्येमां श्रद्धयोपहृतां मया ।

सर्वात्मनानुरूपां ते गृहमेधिषु कर्मसु ॥११॥


तत्-प्रतीच्छ द्विज-अग्र्य-इमाम्
so, accept, of the Braahmanas foremost, her
श्रद्धया-उपहृताम् मया
with reverence brought by me
सर्वात्मना-अनुरूपाम्
in every way competent
ते गृहमेधिषु कर्मसु
in your household duties

O Foremost of the Braahmanas! Therefore, accept her, whom I have brought with utmost reverence to you. In every way she is competent for your household duties.


उद्यतस्य हि कामस्य प्रतिवादो न शस्यते ।

अपि निर्मुक्तसङ्गस्य कामरक्तस्य किं पुन: ॥१२॥


उद्यतस्य हि कामस्य
of (itself) present indeed
प्रतिवाद: न शस्यते
desire denial is not proper
अपि निर्मुक्त-सङ्गस्य
even for the dispassionate
काम-रक्तस्य किम् पुन:
of one who is desire attached, what again

It is not proper even for the one who is dispassionate to deny a desire which has presented of itself, what again of those who are attached to desires.


य उद्यतमनादृत्य कीनाशमभियाचते ।

क्षीयते तद्यश: स्फीतं मानश्चावज्ञया हत: ॥१३॥


य: उद्यतम्-अनादृत्य
(he) who, the self-presented, disregards
कीनाशम्-अभियाचते
and of the miser begs (the same)
क्षीयते तद्-यश: स्फीतम्
diminished is his reputation well spread,
मान:-च-अवज्ञया हत:
and respect by disrespect is tarnished

A person who disregards a self presented object, and begs for it of a miser, his well spread reputation is diminished and respect is tarnished by disrespect.


अहं त्वाशृणवं विद्वन् विवाहार्थं समुद्यतम् ।

अतस्त्वमुपकुर्वाण: प्रत्तां प्रतिगृहाण मे ॥१४॥


अहम्-तु-आशृणवम् विद्वन्
I, indeed, did hear O Learned One!
विवाह-अर्थम् समुद्यतम्
marriage for prepared
अत:-त्वम्-उपकुर्वाण:
there to you, who is not vowed to celibacy,
प्रत्ताम् प्रतिगृहाण मे
offered, accept by me

O Learned One! I have heard, indeed, that you are prepared to be married. Therefore to you, who has not vowed for celibacy, I offer her. Do accept her.


ऋषिरुवाच -
The sage said -
बाढमुद्वोढुकामोऽहमप्रत्ता च तवात्मजा ।

आवयोरनुरूपोऽसावाद्यो वैवाहिको विधि: ॥१५॥


बाढमु-उद्वोढु-काम:-अहम्-
alright, marriage desiring am I
अप्रत्ता च तव-आत्मजा
non-affianced and your daughter
आवयो:-अनुरूप:-असौ-
for us (we both) it is befitting this
आद्य: वैवाहिक: विधि:
foremost marriage system

Alright, it is true that I am desirous of marrying and that your daughter is not betrothed. So it is beffitting for us both that we marry according to the foremost (Braahma) system of marriage .


काम: स भूयान्नरदेव तेऽस्या: पुत्र्या: समाम्नायविधौ प्रतीत: ।

क एव ते तनयां नाद्रियेत स्वयैव कान्त्या क्षिपतीमिव श्रियम् ॥१६॥


काम: स: भूयात्-नरदेव
desire that (to marry), may be, O King!
ते-अस्या: पुत्र्या:
by your this daughter
समाम्नाय-विधौ प्रतीत:
by the scriptures' system known
क: एव ते तनयाम्
who indeed your daughter
न-आद्रियेत स्वया-एव
will not honour, by her own
कान्त्या क्षिपतीम्-इव श्रियम्
lustre, throws as though, the splendour (of ornaments)

That desire of mine, may be fulfilled by marrying this daughter of yours by the system of marriage well known in the scriptures. Indeed, who will not honour your daughter, whose own luster belies the splendour of the ornaments.


यां हर्म्यपृष्ठे क्वणदङ्घ्रिशोभां विक्रीडतीं कन्दुकविह्वलाक्षीम् ।

विश्वावसुर्न्यपतत्स्वाद्विमानाद्विलोक्य सम्मोहविमूढचेता: ॥१७॥


याम् हर्म्यपृष्ठे क्वणत्-
whom on the palace roof, tinkling
अङ्घ्रि-शोभाम् विक्रीडतम्
of the feet's' ornaments, playing
कन्दुक-विह्वल-आक्षीम्
ball dancing eyes
विश्वावसु:-न्यपतत्-स्वात्-विमानात्-
Vishwaavasu fell down from his own Ariel car
विलोक्य सम्मोह-विमूढचेता:
seeing (was) stupefied and infatuated

Once, as she was playing with a ball on the roof of her mansion, her eyes were dancing, and the anklets on her feet were also tinkling, seeing whom, Vishvaavasu who was going in his ariel car, fell down from it, stupified and infatuated.


तां प्रार्थयन्तीं ललनाललाममसेवितश्रीचरणैरदृष्टाम् ।


वत्सां मनोरुच्चपद:स्वसारं को नानुमन्येत बुधोऽभियाताम् ॥१८॥
21.5.14
ताम् प्रार्थयन्तीम् ललना-ललाम्-
her seeking, young girl coy
असेवित-श्री-चरणै:-अदृष्टाम्
(by those) have not served The Lord's feet, unseen
वत्साम् मनो:-उच्चपद:-स्वसारम्
the daughter of Manu, Uttaanpaada sister
क: न-अनुमन्येत बुध:-अभियाताम्
who will not welcome, the wise approached spontaneously

To those people who have not served the feet of The Lord, the daughter of Manu, the sister of Uttaanapaada is unseen. Which wise man will not accept her, who has spontaniously approached me, seeking my hand.


अतो भजिष्ये समयेन साध्वीं यावत्तेजो बिभृयादात्मनो मे ।

अ॒तो धर्मान् पारमहंस्यमुख्यान् शुक्लप्रोक्तान् बहु मन्येऽविहिंस्रान् ॥१९॥


अत: भजिष्ये समयेन
therefore will accept with condition,
साध्वीम् यावत्-तेज:
the noble (girl), till Supreme Spirit
बिभृयात्-आत्मन: मे
will bear in herself, mine
अ॒त: धर्मान् पारमहंस्य-
then the observances of Sanyaas
मुख्यान् शुक्ल-प्रोक्तान्
main, by The Lord expounded
बहु मन्ये-अविहिंस्रान्
will well take on, non destructing

Therefore, I will accept the noble girl for a wife, on condition that I will live with her till only when she bears in herself my Supreme Spirit. Then I will persue the observances of the main Sanyaasa system, expounded by The Lord, which are non-destructing.


यतोऽभवद्विश्वमिदं विचित्रं संस्थास्यते यत्र च वावतिष्ठते ।

प्रजापतीनां पतिरेष मह्यं परं प्रमाणं भगवाननन्त: ॥२०॥


यत:-अभवत्-विश्वम्-इदम्
from whom happened world this
विचित्रम् संस्थास्यते यत्र
wonderful, will dissolve where
च वा-अवतिष्ठते
and or is sustained
प्रजापतीनाम् पति:-एष
of the Prajaapatis, the Master, this
मह्यम् परम् प्रमाणम्
for me the most revered
भगवान्-अनन्त:
The Lord Imperishable

From whom this wonderful world happened, where it will be dissolved and, or where it is sustained, that Master of the Prajaapatis', is my most revered Unperishable Lord.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
स उग्रधन्वन्नियदेवावभाषे आसीच्च तूष्णीमरविन्दनाभम् ।

धियोपगृह्णन् स्मितशोभितेन मुखेन चेतो लुलुभे देवहूत्या: ॥२१॥


स: उग्रधन्वन्-
he (Kardama), O Vidura!
इयत्-एव-आवभाषे आसीत्-च
that much only said, became and
तूष्णीम्-अरविन्द-नाभम्
silent, lotus navel
धिया-उपगृह्णन् स्मित-शोभितेन
in heart placing, by smile beautified
मुखेन चेत: लुलुभे देवहूत्या:
face, mind captivated Devahooti's

Saying this much, sage Kardama became silent and placed the lotus naveled Lord in his heart. Looking at his smile bedecked face, Devahooti's mind was captivated.


सोऽनुज्ञात्वा व्यवसितं महिष्या दुहितु: स्फुटम् ।

तस्मै गुणगणाढ्याय ददौ तुल्यां प्रहर्षित: ॥२२॥


स:-अनुज्ञात्वा व्यवसितम्
he (Manu) knowing the decision
महिष्या दुहितु: स्फुटम्
by the queen (Shataroopaa), daughter's clear
तस्मै गुण-गणा-आढ्याय
to her, of virtues plenty the repository
ददौ तुल्याम् प्रहर्षित:
gave appropriate delightfully

Manu knowing the clear decision of his daughter, the repository of plenty of virtues, gave to her, along with his queen, Shataroopa, the appropriate one.


शतरूपा महाराज्ञी पारिबर्हान्महाधनान् ।

दम्पत्यो: पर्यदात्प्रीत्या भूषावास: परिच्छदान् ॥२३॥


शतरूपा महाराज्ञी
Shataroopaa, the empress
पारिबर्हान्-महा-धनान्
articles and many riches
दम्पत्यो: पर्यदात्-प्रीत्या
to the couple gave lovingly
भूषा-वास: परिच्छदान्
clothes and things of household

The empress Shatroopaa, lovingly gave to the couple, many riches, cloathes and things and articles of household.


प्रत्तं दुहितरं सम्राट् सदृक्षाय गतव्यथ: ।

उपगुह्य च बाहुभ्यामौत्कण्ठ्योन्मथिताशय: ॥२४॥


प्रत्तम् दुहितरम् सम्राट्
giver of the daughter, the emperor
सदृक्षाय गत-व्यथ:
to the deserving, devoid of agony
उपगुह्य च बाहुभ्याम्-
embraced and with both arms
औत्कण्ठ्य-उन्मथित-आशय:
by anxiety was up-heavel minded

Having given his daughter to a suitable person, the emperor was devoid of agony, and embraced her with both arms. Again due to his affection for her his mind was agitated with anxiety.


अशक्नुवंस्तद्विरहं मुञ्चन् वाष्पकलां मुहु: ।

आसिञ्चदम्ब वत्सेति नेत्रोदैर्दुहितु: शिखा: ॥२५॥


अशक्नुवन्-तद्-विरहम्
unable to take her separation
मुञ्चन् वाष्प-कलाम् मुहु:
shed tear streaks again and again
आसिञ्चत्-अम्ब वत्स-इति
drenched , 'daughter, darling' thus
नेत्र-उदै:-दुहितु: शिखा:
by eye's water, daughter's hair locks

The emperor Manu was unable to bear the seperation from his daughter, so he shed steaks of tears and drenched his daughter's hair locks with the water from his eyes, crying again and again,' O daughter, O darling', thus.


आमन्त्र्य तं मुनिवरमनुज्ञात: सहानुग: ।

प्रतस्थे रथमारुह्य सभार्य: स्वपुरं नृप: ॥२६॥


आमन्त्र्य तम् मुनिवरम्-
consulting him the great sage (Kardama)
अनुज्ञात: सह-अनुग:
permitted, with (his) retinue
प्रतस्थे रथम्-आरुह्य
departed, the chariot mounting
सभार्य: स्व-पुरम् नृप:
with (his) wife, to his own capital, the monarch

The monarch consulted the great sage, Kardama, and obtaining his permission to leave, mounted the chariot with his wife and departed to his own capital along with his retinue.


उभयो:-ऋषिकुल्याया: सरस्वत्या: सुरोधसो: ।

ऋषीणामुपशान्तानां पश्यन्नाश्रमसम्पद: ॥२७॥


उभयो:-ऋषि-कुल्याया:
on both, by the sages inhabited
सरस्वत्या: सुरोधसो:
the Saraswati's (river's), on the banks established
ऋषीणाम्-उपशान्तानाम्
of the sages tranquil minded
पश्यन्-आश्रम-सम्पद:
witnessing, the hermitages' beauty

He witnessed the beauty of the hermitages established on both the banks of river Saraswati, inhabitated by the tranquil minded sages.


तमायान्तमभिप्रेत्य ब्रह्मावर्तात्प्रजा: पतिम् ।

गीतसंस्तुतिवादित्रै: प्रत्युदीयु: प्रहर्षिता: ॥२८॥


तम्-आयान्तम्-अभिप्रेत्य
him (the monarch) arriving, knowing
ब्रह्मावर्तात्-प्रजा: पतिम्
from Brahmaavarta, the subjects, the monarch
गीत-संस्तुति-वादित्रै:
with songs, by praises, and by instrumental music
प्रत्युदीयु: प्रहर्षिता:
welcomed, delighted

Knowing the arrival of their monarch, the subject went ahead from Brahmaavarta, and welcomed him with songs, praises and instrumental music.


बर्हिष्मती नाम पुरी सर्वसम्पत्समन्विता ॥

न्यपतन् यत्र रोमाणि यज्ञस्याङ्ग विधुन्वत: ॥२९॥


बर्हिष्मती नाम पुरी
Barhishmati, named city
सर्व-सम्पत्-समन्विता
all wealth comprising of
न्यपतन् यत्र रोमाणि
fell where, the hair
यज्ञस्य-अङ्ग विधुन्वत:
sacrifice (personified) O Dear! (Vishnu's) body shook

O Dear! Barhishmati, is the name of the city, the capital of Manu. Here the hair of the body of the sacrifice personified Boar (Vishnu's) hair had fallen, when He shook His body.


कुशा: काशास्त एवासन् शश्वत्-हरितवर्चस: ।

ऋषयो यै: पराभाव्य यज्ञघ्नान् यज्ञमीजेरे ॥३०॥


कुशा: काशा: एव-आसन्
Kusha (and) Kaasha, (these) only were there
शश्वत्-हरित-वर्चस:
ever green lustrous
ऋषय: यै: पराभाव्य
sages by which defeated
यज्ञघ्नान् यज्ञम्-ईजेरे
the sacrifice destroyers, (and) sacrifices performed

These hair only became the evergreen lustrous grass by which the sages defeated the demons, the destroyers of the sacrifices, and performed the sacrifices.


कुशकाशमयं बर्हिरास्तीर्य भगवान्मनु:

अयजद्यज्ञपुरुषं लब्धा स्थानं यतो भुवम् ॥३१॥


कुश-काश-मयम् बर्हि:-
Kusha and Kaasha comprising of mat
आस्तीर्य भगवान्-मनु:
laid, the worshipful Manu
अयजत्-यज्ञ-पुरुषम्
propitiated The Sacrifice Lord
लब्धा स्थानम् यत: भुवम्
(and) attained a place therefore in the world

The worshipful Manu laid a mat of Kushas and Kaashas, as he sat to propitiate Lord Vishnu, The Lord of sacrifices, and thereby attained a place in the world.


बर्हिष्मती नाम विभुर्यां निर्विश्य समावसत् ।

तस्यां प्रविष्टो भवनं तापत्रयविनाशनम् ॥३२॥


बर्हिष्मती नाम विभु:-
Barhishmati named, the lord (Manu)
याम् निर्विश्य समावसत्
where having arrived, lived
तस्याम् प्रविष्ट: भवनम्
in that entered the palace
ताप-त्रय-विनाशनम्
the agonies three dispeller of

Manu arrived the city named Barhishmati, where he lived and entered the palace which dispelled the three agonies.


सभार्य: सप्रज: कामान् बुभुजेऽन्याविरोधत: ।

सङ्गीयमानसत्कीर्ति: सस्त्रीभि: सुरगायकै: ।

प्रत्यूषेष्वनुबद्धेन हृदा श्रूण्वन् हरे: कथा: ॥३३॥


सभार्य: सप्रज: कामान्
along with wife and children, pleasures
बुभुजे-अन्य-अविरोधत:
enjoyed, others, (Dharma, Artha, Moksha) not obstructing
सङ्गीयमान-सत्कीर्ति:
singing were the glories
सस्त्रीभि: सुरगायकै:
with the wives the celestial bards
प्रत्यूषेषु-अनुबद्धेन हृदा
at dawn, with a loving heart
श्रूण्वन् हरे: कथा:
listened to Hari's stories

Manu enjoyed the pleasures along with his wife and children which did not hamper the other three, Dharma, Artha and Moksha. At dawn his glories were sung by the celestial bards and their wives, but he listened to the stories of Hari with a loving heart.


निष्णातं योगमायासु मुनिं स्वायम्भुवं मनुम् ।

यदा भ्रंशयितुं भोगा न शेकुर्भगवत्परम् ॥३४॥


निष्णातम् योग-मायासु
expert in pleasure devices
मुनिम् स्वायम्भुम् मनुम्
the sage (like) Swaayambhuva Manu
यदा भ्रंशयतुम् भोगा:
when, to shake the sense object
न शेकु:-भगवत्-परम्
were unable, in Lord's devotion

Though the sage, like Swaayambhuva Manu, was an expert in the devices of pleasures, the sense objects were unable to shake his devotion to The Lord.


अयातयामास्तस्यासन् यामा: स्वान्तरयापना: ।

शृण्वतो ध्यायतो विष्णो: कुर्वतो ब्रुवत: कथा: ॥३५॥


अयात-यामा:-तस्य-आसन्
was not wasted the time his was
यामा: स्वान्तर-यापना:
(every) moment of the Manvantara span (of time)
शृण्वत: ध्यायत: विष्णो:
hearing of, meditating on, Vishnu's
कुर्वत: ब्रुवत: कथा:
composing and telling stories

Not a moment of Manu's span of the Manvantaras, was wasted, as every moment was used in hearing of, meditating on, and composing and telling Vishnu's stories.


स एवं स्वान्तरं निन्ये युगानामेकसप्ततिम् ।

वासुदेवप्रसङ्गेन परिभूतगतित्रय: ॥३६॥


स: एवम् स्वान्तरम् निन्ये
he (Manu) thus, his own Manvantara lived through
युगानाम्-एकसप्ततिम्
of yugas, seventy-one

Vaasudeva's (pertaining) activities
परिभूत-गति-त्रय:
overcoming the effects of the three (gunas)

Manu lived through his own Manvantara comprising of seventy one chatur-yugas, engaged in the activities pertaining to Vaasudeva, Vishnu, and overcoming the effects of the three Gunas.


शारीरा मानसा दिव्या वैयासे ये च मानुषा: ।

भौतिकाश्च कथं क्लेशा बाधन्ते हरिसंश्रयम् ॥३७॥


शारीरा: मानसा दिव्या:
physical, mental, divine
वैयासे ये च मानुषा:
O Vidura! those and human
भौतिका:-च कथम् क्लेशा:
material and how can troubles
बाधन्ते हरि-संश्रयम्
afflict the (one) to Shree Hari surrendered

O Vidura! How can any troubles, be they physical, mental, divine, human or material, afflict the one who is surrendered to Shree Hari.


य: पृष्टो मुनिभि: प्राह धर्मान्नानाविधाञ्छुभान् ।

नृणां वर्णाश्रमाणां च सर्वभूतहित सदा ॥३८॥


य: पृष्ट: मुनिभि: प्राह
who (when) asked by the sages, said
धर्मान्-नाना-विधान्-शुभान्
of the Dharmaas, of different types auspicious
नृणाम् वर्ण-आश्रमाणाम्
for the people of Varna and Aashramas
च सर्व-भूत-हित: सदा
of all the beings well-wisher, always

Who (Manu), when asked by the sages, explained the auspicious Dharmas different types, for the people in general, and for the people of different Vernas (system of society), and different Aashramas, (stages of life), as he was always a well-wisher of beings.


एतत्त आदिराजस्य मनोश्चरितमद्भुतम् ।

वर्णितं वर्णनीयस्य तदपत्योदयं शृणु ॥३९॥


एतत्-ते आदि-राजस्य
this to you, of the first monarch
मनो:-चरितम्-अद्भुतम्
Manu's character splendid
वर्णितम् वर्णनीयस्य
narrated, worthy of praise
तत्-अपत्य-उदयम् शृणु
his issue glory, listen to

To you, this was the narration of the wonderful character of the first monarch Manu, who is worthy of praise. Now listen to the glory of his daughter, Devahooti.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीय स्कन्धे द्वाविंशोऽध्याय: समाप्त: ॥२२॥


Thus ends the twenty-second discourse in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
