मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
पितृभ्यां प्रस्थिते साध्वी पतिमिङ्गितकोविदा ।

नित्यं पर्यचरत्प्रीत्या भवानीव भवं प्रभुम् ॥१॥


पितृभ्याम् प्रस्थिते साध्वी
(after) the parents departed, the virtuous girl
पतिम्-इङ्गित-कोविदा
husband's mind reading, the wise
नित्यम् पर्यचरत्-प्रीत्या
daily served delightfully
भवानी-इव भवम् प्रभुम्
Paarvati just as Shiva the Lord

After her parents had departed, the wise virtuous girl, Devahooti, daily delightfully served her husband, whose mind she was good at reading, just as Paarvati serves Lord Shiva.


विश्रम्भेणात्मशौचेन गौरवेण दमेन च ।

शुश्रूषया सौहृदेन वाचा मधुरया च भो: ॥२॥


विश्रम्भेण-आत्म-शौचेन
by trust, self purity
गौरवेण दमेन च
respect, self-control
शुश्रूषया सौहृदेन
service, friendliness
वाचा मधुरया च भो:
and speech soft, O Vidura!

O Vidura! Devahooti, by trust, self-purity, respect, self-control, service, frindliness and soft speech,…


विसृज्य कामं दम्भं लोभमघं मदम् ।

अप्रमत्तोद्यता नित्यं तेजीयांसमतोषयत् ॥३॥


विसृज्य् कामम्-दम्भम्
not indulging in lust, arrogance,
लोभम्-अघम् मदम्
greed, sin, and vanity,
अप्रमत्ता-उद्यता नित्यम्
careful, vigilant always
तेजीयान्-समतोषयत्
the glorious (her husband), pleased

She was always careful and vigilanat and pleased her glorious husband by not indulging in lust, arrogance, greed, sin or vanity.


स वै देवर्षिवर्यस्तां मानवीं समनुव्रताम् ।

दैवाद्गरीयस: पत्युराशासानां महाशिष: ॥४॥


स: वै देवर्षिवर्य:-
he indeed (was pleased), the divine sage great
ताम् मानवीम् समनुव्रताम्
her, Manu's daughter's, in service of
दैवात्-गरीयस: पत्यु:-
from Providence greater husband's
आशासानाम् महाशिष:
desires expected

The divine great sage Kardama was indeed pleased by the services of Manu's daughter. She expected desires from her husband whom she considered to be greater than Providence.


कालेन भूयसा क्षामां कर्शितां व्रतचर्यया ।

प्रेमगद्गदया वाचा पीडित: कृपयाब्रवीत् ॥५॥


कालेन भूयसा क्षामाम्
for time long weak and
कर्शिताम् व्रत-चर्यया
thinned by vows undertaking
प्रेम-गद्गदया वाचा
with love overflowing speech
पीडित: कृपया-अब्रवीत्
oppressed, with pity said

Kardama, was oppressed seeing her weak and emaciated, by undertaking vows for a long time, and with pity and love overflowing speech said to her ...


कर्दम उवाच -
Kardama said-
तुष्टोऽहमद्य तव मानवि मानदाया: शुश्रूषया परमया परया च भक्त्या ।

यो देहिनामयमतीव सुहृत्स्वदेहो नावेक्षित: समुचित: क्षपितुं मदर्थे ॥६॥


तुष्ट:-अहम्-अद्य
satisfied I am today
तव मानवि मानदाया:
with you O Manu's daughter, honouring (me)
शुश्रूषया परमया
with service faithful
परया च भक्त्या
and supreme devotion
य: देहिनाम्-अयम्-अतीव
whereas, for people, this is very
सुहृत्-स्व-देह: न-अवेक्षित:
dear ones own body, not caring
समुचित: क्षपितुम् मत्-अर्थे
one bit, wasted for my sake

O Manu's daughter! Today I am satisfied with you, as you have served me with full faith and honour and with supreme devotion. In as much that, this body which is very dear to human beings, you have wasted it for my sake.


ये मे स्वधर्मनिरतस्य तप:समाधिविद्यात्मयोगविजिता भगवत्प्रसादा: ।

तानेव ते मदनुसेवनयावरुद्धान् दृष्टिं प्रपश्य वितराम्यभयानशोकान् ॥७॥


ये मे स्व-धर्म-निरतस्य
those (achievements) of mine, in Dharma engaged
तप:-समाधि-विद्या-आत्म-योग-
austerities, Samaadhi, knowledge, and self realization
विजिता भगवत्-प्रसादा:
gained, as the Lord's blessings
तान्-एव ते मत्-अनुसेवनया-
those only to you, by me serving
अवरुद्धान् दृष्टिम् प्रपश्य
difficult to get vision to see
वितरामि-अभयान्-अशोकान्
will give, fearless and griefless

Those blessings of The Lord, which I have gained by adhering to my duties, and by austerities, Samaadhi, knowledge, and self-realization, which are not gained easily, to see them, I give you super natural vision, which is fearless and without grief.


अन्येपुनर्भगवतो भ्रुव उद्विजृम्भविभ्रंशितार्थरचना: किमुरुक्रमस्य ।

सिद्धासि भुङ्क्ष्वविभवान्निजधर्मदोहान् दिव्यान्नरैर्दुरधिगान्नृपविक्रियाभि: ॥८॥


अन्ये-पुन:-भगवत: भ्रुव:
others (achievements) again, by Lord's eyebrows'
उद्विजृम्भ-विभ्रंशित-अर्थ-रचना:
curve, destroyed, material gains,
किम्-उरुक्रमस्य
what (of them) of The One of great renown
सिद्धा-असि भुङ्क्ष्व-विभवान्-
you are expert, enjoy the pleasures
निज-धर्म-दोहान् दिव्यान्-
by your duties mulched divine
नरै:-दुरधिगान्-नृप-विक्रियाभि:
by people impossible to achieve, king (am I) by false feeling

The other material gains, again, of what importance are they, which can be dstroyed by the quiver of Lord Hari's eyebrow? You are an expert, now enjoy the divine pleasures which you have milched by your wifely duties, which are impossile to be enjoyed by ordinary people, because they have the false dignity of royality.


एवं ब्रुवाणमबलाखिलयोगमायाविद्याविचक्षणमवेक्ष्य गताधिरासीत् ।

सम्प्रश्रयप्रणयविह्वलया गिरेषद्व्रीडावलोकविलसद्-हसिताननाऽऽह ॥९॥


एवम् ब्रुवाणम्-अबला-
thus being said, the coy (girl)
अखिल-योग-माया-
total yoga, Maayaa,
विद्या-विचक्षणम्-
knowledge expert
अवेक्ष्य गता-आधि:-आसीत्
discovering, devoid of worry was
सम्प्रश्रय-प्रणय-
modesty and love
विह्वलया गिरा-
choked voice
ईषद्-व्रीडा-अवलोक-
with a bit of shyness looking,
विलसद्-हसित-आनना-आह
playing of a smile on the face, said

When Devahooti was told, thus, she was devoid of all worry as she came to know that her husband was an expert in all the knowledge of Yoga and Maayaa. With a voice choked with modesty and love, with a shy look and a smile playing on her face she said…


देवहूति उवाच -
Devahooti said -
राद्धं बत द्विजवृषैतदमोघयोगमायाधिपे त्वयि विभो तदवैमि भर्तु: ।

यस्तेऽभ्यधायि समय: सकृदङ्गसङ्गो भूयाद्गरीयसि गुण: प्रसव: सतीनाम् ॥१०॥


राद्धम् बत द्विजवृष-
established indeed (it is) O Braahmana chief!
तत्-अमोघ योग-माया-अधिपे
that unfailing Yoga and Maayaa's master
त्वयि विभो तत्-अवैमि
is in you O lord! that I know,
भर्तु: य:-ते-अभ्यधायि
O great One! that (which) by you made promise
समय: सकृत्-
time, once
अङ्ग-सङ्ग: भूयात्-
body contact may be (made)
गरीयसि गुण: प्रसव:
from meritorious (husband), great achievement of progeny
सतीनाम्
for virtuous wives

O Chief of Braahmins! Indeed it is established that you are an unfailing master of the Yoga and powers of Maayaa, and I know about that. O great One! You had made a promise of body contact just once. It is a big achievement for virtuous wives to have a progeny from meritorious husband.


तत्रेतिकृत्यमुपशिक्ष यथोपदेशं येनैव मे कर्शितोऽतिरिरंसयाऽऽत्मा।

सिद्ध्येत ते कृतमनोभवधर्षिताया दीनस्तदीश भवनं सदृशं विचक्ष्व ॥११॥


तत्र-इति-कृत्यम्-उपशिक्ष
for that, duty instruct,
यथा-उपदेशम् येन-एव
according to scriptures, by which only
मे कर्शित:-अति-रिरंसया-आत्मा
my feeble, by intense passion, body
सिद्ध्येत ते कृत-मनोभव-
may become for your union, by cupid
धर्षिताया: दीन:-तत्-ईश
troubled, emaciated, therefore lord!
भवनम् सदृशम् विचक्ष्व
house suitable arrange

For that act instruct to me the duties according to the scriptures.So that, my body which is feeble by intense passion and emaciated troubled by cupid may be worthy of union with you. Also for this purpose arrange for a suitable house.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
प्रियाया: प्रियमन्विच्छन् कर्दमो योगमास्थित: ।

विमानं कामगं क्षत्तस्तर्ह्येवाविरचीकरत् ॥१२॥


प्रियाया: प्रियम्-अन्विच्छन्
of beloved's desire to fulfil
कर्दम: योगम्-आस्थित:
Kardama, in Yoga concentrating
विमानम् कामगम् क्षत्त:-
Ariel car wish fulfilling, O Vidura!
तर्हि-एव-अविरचीकरत्
then only produced

O Vidura! Kardama, wanting to fulfill his beloved wife's desire, sat in Yoga contemplating, and then and there produced a wish fulfilling ariel car.


सर्वकामदुघं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नसमन्वितम् ।

सर्वर्द्ध्युपचयोदर्कं मणिस्तम्भैरुपस्कृतम् ॥१३॥


सर्व-काम-दुघम् दिव्यम्
all desires yielding, divine
सर्व-रत्न-समन्वितम्
all gems studded
सर्व-ऋद्धि-उपचय-उदर्कम्
all wealth equipped (with) increasing
मणि-स्तम्भै:-उपस्कृतम्
bejewelled pillars adorned with

The ariel mansion was all desires yielding, was studded with all sorts of gems, was adorned with bejewelled pillars and was full of all kinds of wealth which kept increasing.


दिव्योपकरणोपेतं सर्वकालसुखावहम् ।

पट्टिकाभि: पताकाभिर्विचित्राभिरलंकृतम् ॥१४॥


दिव्य-उपकरण-उपेतम्
divine equipments containing
सर्व-काल-सुख-आवहम्
all seasons pleasure providing
पट्टिकाभि:-पताकाभि:-
with silken flags
विचित्राभि:-अलंकृतम्
wonderful decorated by

It was divine. It cintained all sorts of equipments, and provided pleasure in all times and seasons, and was decorated with wonderful silken flags.


स्रग्भिर्विचित्रमाल्याभिर्मञ्जुशिञ्जत्षडङ्घ्रिभि: ।

दुकूलक्षौमकौशेयैर्नानावस्त्रैर्विराजितम् ॥१५॥


स्रग्भि:-विचित्र-माल्याभि:-
garland wonderful rows of
मञ्जु-शिञ्जत्-षट्-अङ्घ्रिभि:
sweet humming of bumble bees
दुकूल-क्षौम- कौशेयै:-
draperies of cotton and silk
नाना-वस्त्रै:-विराजितम्
and various materials comprising of

It was further adorned with wonderful garlands of flowers, which attracted rows of sweetly humming bumble bees. It had draperies of cotton and silk and comprised of various other materials .


उपर्युपरि विन्यस्तनिलयेषु पृथक्पृथक् ।

क्षिप्तै: कशिपुभि: कान्तं पर्यङ्कव्यजनासनै: ॥१६॥


उपरि-उपरि विन्यस्त-
(in) one above the other
निलयेषु पृथक्-पृथक्
constructed rooms, separately
क्षिप्तै: कशिपुभि: कान्तम्
provided cushions were beautiful
पर्यङ्क-व्यजन-आसनै:
beds fans and seats

The rooms were constructed one above the other, and looked beautiful by the seperately provided cushions, beds, fans and seats.


तत्र तत्र विनिक्षिप्तनानाशिल्पोपशोभितम् ।

महामरकतस्थल्या जुष्टं विद्रुमवेदिभि: ॥१७॥


तत्र तत्र विनिक्षिप्त-नाना-
here and there placed various
शिल्प-उपशोभितम्
art pieces beautified
महामरकत-स्थल्या
priceless emeralds flooring
जुष्टम् विद्रुम-वेदिभि:
placed with coral stools

It's beauty was enhanced by various pieces of art placed here and there. The flooring was engraved with priceless emerald and stools of coral were placed here and there.


द्वासु: विद्रुमदेहल्या भातं वज्रकपाटवत् ।

शिखरेष्विन्द्रनीलेषु हेमकुम्भैरधिश्रितम् ॥१८॥


द्वासु: विद्रुम-देहल्या
in the entrance, coral thresholds
भातम् वज्र-कपाटवत्
shone diamond doors
शिखरेषु-इन्द्रनीलेषु
on the domes of sapphire
हेम-कुम्भै:-अधिश्रितम्
golden vessels were placed

The entrances shone with coral threshholds and diamond doors. On the sapphire domes were placed golden vessels.


चक्षुष्मत्पद्मरागाग्र्यैर्वज्रभित्तिषु निर्मितै: ।

जुष्टं विचित्रवैतानैर्महार्हैर्हेमतोरणै: ॥१९॥


चक्षुष्मत्-पद्मराग-अग्र्यै:-
eyes like, of rubies choicest
वज्र-भित्तिषु निर्मितै:
in diamond walls were made
जुष्टम् विचित्र-वैतानै:-
(were) decorated by wonderful canopies
महार्है:-हेम-तोरणै:
and highly valuable gold festoons

The diamond walls were studded with choicest rubies, which looked like eyes. They were wonderfully decorated with highly valuable golden canopies and festoons.


हंसपारावतव्रातैस्तत्र तत्र निकूजितम् ।

कृत्रिमान् मन्यमानै: स्वानधिरुह्याधिरुह्य च ॥२०॥


हंस-पारावत-व्रातै:-
swans and pigeons flocks
तत्र तत्र निकूजितम्
here and there resounded
कृत्रिमान् मन्यमानै:
painted (swans and pigeons)
स्वान्-अधिरुह्य-अधिरुह्य च
believing to be own, sitting (here and there) sitting and

The flocks of swans and pigeons believed the here and there painted ones to be of their own kind, and therefore sat here and there and resounded the place with their cries.


विहारस्थानविश्रामसंवेशप्राङ्गणाजिरै: ।

यथोपजोषं रचितैर्विस्मापनमिवात्मन: ॥२१॥


विहार-स्थान-विश्राम-
sports' fields, bed (rooms)
संवेश-प्राङ्गण-अजिरै:
meeting (rooms), courtyards, inner yards,
यथा-उपजोषम् रचितै:-
as per requirement constructed
विस्मापनम्-इव-आत्मन:
astonishment of himself

The sports' fields, bed rooms, meeting chambers, courtyards and inner yards, constructed as per requirement, astonished the sage Kardama himself.


ईदृग्गृहं तत्पश्यन्तीं नातिप्रीतेन चेतसा ।

सर्वभूताशयाभिज्ञ: प्रावोचत्कर्दम: स्वयम् ॥२२॥


ईदृक्-गृहम् तत्-पश्यन्तीम्
this sort of house, that watching
न-अति-प्रीतेन चेतसा
with not a very pleased mind
सर्व-भूत-आशय-अभिज्ञ:
all beings mind reader
प्रावोचत्-कर्दम: स्वयम्
spoke Kardama of his own

Kardama, the mind reader of all beings, saw that Devahooti was not very pleased to see that sort of a house, so he spoke to her on his own accord.


निमज्ज्यास्मिन् ह्रदे भीरु विमानमिदमारुह ।

इदं शुक्लकृतं तीर्थमाशिषां यापकं नृणाम् ॥२३॥


निमज्ज्य-अस्मिन् ह्रदे
bathe in this lake
भीरु विमानम्-इदम्-आरुह
O timid one! Arial car this board
इदम् शुक्ल-कृतम् तीर्थम्-
this by Vishnu is created, the holy
आशिषाम् यापकम् नृणाम्
desires granting to people

O timid one! Bathe in this lake and then ascend the ariel car. This holy lake is created by Vishnu and grants the desires of people.


सा तद्भर्तु: समादाय वच: कुवलयेक्षणा ।

सरजं विभ्रती वासो वेणीभूतांश्च मूर्धजान् ॥२४॥


सा तत्-भर्तु: समादाय
she that husband's following
वच: कुवलये-ईक्षणा
words, lotus eyed
सरजम् विभ्रती वास:
with dirt wearing clothes
वेणीभूतान्-च मूर्धजान्
matted and hair

She, that lotus-eyed one, followed her husbands words, who was wearing dirty cloathes and whose hair had become matted.


अङ्गं च मलपङ्केन संछन्नं शबलस्तनम् ।

आविवेश सरस्वत्या: सर: शिवजलाशयम् ॥२५॥


अङ्गम् च मल-पङ्केन
body and with dirt and soot
संछन्नम् शबल-स्तनम्
covered discoloured breasts
आविवेश सरस्वत्या: सर:
entered Saraswati's lake
शिव-जल-आशयम्
sacred water containing

She, whose body was covered with dirt and soot, and whose breast were also discoloured, entered the Saraswati's lake, which contained sacred water.


सान्त:सरसि वेश्मस्था: शतानि दश कन्यका: ।

सर्वा: किशोरवयसो ददर्शोत्पलगन्धय: ॥२६॥


सा-अन्त:-सरसि
She in the lake,
वेश्म-स्था:
palace living
शतानि दश कन्यका:
a thousand girls
सर्वा: किशोरवयस:
all young in age
ददर्श-उत्पल-गन्धय:
saw with lotus smelling

Inside the lake, she saw a palace in which a thousand girls of young age were living. They all emmited the smell of lotuses.


तां दृष्ट्वा सहसोत्थाय प्रोचु: प्राञ्जलय: स्त्रिय: ।

वयं कर्मकरीस्तुभ्यं शाधि न: करवाम किम् ॥२७॥


ताम् दृष्ट्वा सहसा-उत्थाय
her seeing, suddenly getting up
प्रोचु: प्राञ्जलय: स्त्रिय:
said, folded palms the ladies
वयम् कर्मकरी:-तुभ्यम्
we are in service to you
शाधि न: करवाम किम्
order us, what to do'

The ladies suddenly got up when they saw her, Devahooti, and with joined palms said, 'We are here in service to you, order us what you want us to do.'


स्नानेन तां महार्हेण स्नापयित्वा मनस्विनीम् ।

दुकूले निर्मले नूत्ने ददुरस्यै च मानदा: ॥२८॥


स्नानेन ताम् महार्हेण
bathing her in costly cosmetics
स्नापयित्वा मनस्विनीम्
having bathed, the proud woman
दुकूले निर्मले नूत्ने
clothes clean, new gave
ददु:-अस्यै च मानदा:
to her and honoured her

They bathed her, the proud woman, in costly fragrant cosmetics, and having bathed her, gave her new and clean cloathes with honour.


भूषणानि परार्घ्यानि वरीयांसि द्युमन्ति च ।

अन्नं सर्वगुणोपेतं पानं चैवमृतासवम् ॥२९॥


भूषणानि परार्घ्यानि
ornaments to adorn
वरीयांसि द्युमन्ति च
superb and shining
अन्नम् सर्व-गुण-उपेतम्
food and of all qualities consisting
पानम् च-एव-अमृत-आसवम्
drinks and also of nectre quality

They gave her superb shining ornaments to adorn. And also food containing all good qualities and drinks of the quality of necter.


अथादर्शे स्वमात्मानं स्रग्विणं विरजाम्बरम् ।

विरजं कृतस्वस्त्ययनं कन्याभिर्बहुमानितम् ॥३०॥


अथ-आदर्शे स्वम्-आत्मानम्
then, in the mirror
स्रग्विणम् विरज-अम्बरम्
garlanded, clean clothed
विरजम् कृत-स्वस्ति-अयनम्
rid of dirt done, adorned with ornaments
कन्याभि:-बहु-मानितम्
by the ladies and very much honoured

Then in a mirror she saw her own reflection, wearing a garland, clean cloathed, rid of dirt, and adorned with ornaments and well honoured by the ladies.


स्नातं कृतशिर:स्नानं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ।

निष्कग्रीवम् वलयिनं कूजत्काञ्चननूपुरम् ॥३१॥


स्नातम् कृत-शिर:-स्नानम्
bathed, having (her) head shampooed
सर्व-आभरण-भूषितम्
all ornaments decked
निष्क-ग्रीवम् वलयिनम्
necklace in neck, bangles
कूजत्-काञ्चन-नूपुरम्
and tinkling golden anklets

She bathed and had shampooed her head. She was then adorned with all types of ornaments, like necklace in the neck, bangles in the wrists and tinkling golden anklets in her ankles.


श्रोण्योरध्यस्तया काञ्च्या काञ्चन्या बहुरत्नया ।

हारेण च महार्हेण रुचकेन च भूषितम् ॥३२॥


श्रोण्यो:-अध्यस्तया
in her waist was placed
काञ्च्या काञ्चन्या बहुरत्नया
a girdle golden, studded with many gems
हारेण च महार्हेण
pearl necklace and valuable
रुचकेन च भूषितम्
eugents and adorned

A golden girdle studded with many gems was placed on her waist. She was adorned with a necklace of precious pearls and eugents.


सुदता सुभ्रुवा श्लक्ष्णस्निग्धापाङ्गेन चक्षुषा ।

पद्मकोशस्पृधा नीलैरलकैश्च लसन्मुखम् ॥३३॥


सुदता सुभ्रुवा श्लक्ष्ण-
beautiful teeth, beautiful eyebrows
स्निग्ध-अपाङ्गेन चक्षुषा
loving, shy sightful eyes
पद्म-कोश-स्पृधा नीलै:-
lotus buds challenging blue
अलकै:-च लसत्-मुखम्
eyelashes and beautiful face

She had rows of beautiful teeth and beautiful eyebrows, and she glanced with loving and shy eyes. Her beautiful face was a challenge to the beauty of a lotus bud.


यदा सस्मार ऋषभमृषीणां दयितं पतिम् ।

तत्र चास्ते सह स्त्रीभिर्यत्रास्ते स प्रजापति: ॥३४॥


यदा सस्मार ऋषभम्-
when thought of the scion
ऋषीणाम् दयितम् पतिम्
of sages beloved husband
तत्र च-आस्ते सह
there and was present with
स्त्रीभि:-यत्र-आस्ते
the ladies (in waiting) where was
स: प्रजापति:
he the lord of created beings,

As soon as Devahooti thought of her beloved husband, the scion of the sages, then and there she was present with the ladies in waiting, where he, the lord of created beings, Kardama was.


भर्तु: पुरस्तादात्मानं स्त्रीसहस्रवृतं तदा ।

निशाम्य तद्योगगतिं संशयं प्रत्यपद्यत ॥३५॥


भर्तु: पुरस्तात्-आत्मानम्
husband's in presence herself
स्त्री-सहस्र-वृतम् तदा
(with) women in thousands surrounded then
निशाम्य तत्-योग-गतिम्
finding his yogic power
संशयम् प्रत्यपद्यत
wonder struck

She, then, surrounded by a thousand women, found herself in the presence of her husband. She was wonder struck by his yogic power.


स तां कृतमलस्नानां विभ्राजयन्तीमपूर्ववत् ।

आत्मनो विभ्रतीं रूपं संवीतरुचिरस्तनीम् ॥३६॥


स: ताम् कृत-मल-स्नानाम्
he, her, having dirt (cleared) bath
विभ्राजयन्तीम्-अपूर्व-वत्
shone, unlike before
आत्मन: विभ्रतीम् रूपम्
herself, of (former) beauty
संवीत-रुचिर-स्तनीम्
covered (her) beautiful breasts

He saw her, who had bathed clean of dirt, and no longer looked like her former self. She had regained her original beauty, and her beautiful breast were covered.


विद्याधरीसहस्रेण सेव्यमानां सुवाससम् ।

जातभावो विमानं तदारोहयदमित्रहन् ॥३७॥


विद्याधरी-सहस्रेण
by Vidyaadharees thousands
सेव्यमानाम् सुवाससम्
waited upon, well clothed
जात-भाव: विमानम्
inspired with love, in the Ariel car
तत्-आरोहयत्-अमित्र-हन्
that helped to ascend, O Enemy destroyer!

O Enemy destroyer, Vidura! Inspired with love for her, who was well cloathed and who was waited upon by a thousand Vidyaadharees, he, Kardama helped her board that ariel car.


तस्मिन्नलुप्तमहिमा प्रिययानुरक्तो विद्याधरीभिरुपचीर्णवपुर्विमाने ।

बभ्राज उत्कचकुमुद्गणवानपीच्यस्ताराभिरावृत इवोडुपतिर्नभ:स्थ: ॥३८॥


तस्मिन्-अलुप्त-महिमा प्रियया-
in that (Ariel car) of undiminished glory, by beloved
अनुरक्त: विद्याधरीभि:-
be smitten, by Vidyaadharees
उपचीर्ण-वपु:-विमाने
served physique in the Ariel car
बभ्राज उत्कच-कुमुद-
shone, blooming lilies
गण-वान्-अपीच्य:-
hosts consisting, looks beautiful
ताराभि:-आवृत
by the stars surrounded
इव-उडुपति:-नभ:-स्थ:
like moon in the sky present

In that ariel car, Kardama had lost no glory, inspite of being smitten by the love of his beloved, or by his physique being waited upon by Vidhyaadharees. Like a moon present in the sky looks beautiful surrounded by stars, he looked beautiful surrounded by hosts of blooming lillies.


तेनाष्टलोकपविहारकुलाचलेन्द्रद्रोणीष्वनङ्गसखमारुतसौभगासु ।

सिद्धैर्नुतो द्युधुनिपातशिवस्वनासु रेमे चिरम् धनदवल्ललनावरूथी ॥३९॥


तेन-अष्ट-लोकप-
by that (Ariel car) of the eight (directions') guardians
विहार-कुल-अचलेन्द्र-द्रोणीषु-
pleasure (ground) Meru Mountain's, vallies in
अनङ्ग-सख-मारुत-सौभगासु
(where) cupid's friend breeze pleasant
सिद्धै:-नुत: द्युधुनि-पात-
by the Siddhas extolled, of Ganga's fall
शिव-स्वनासु रेमे चिरम्
auspicious sound, revelled, for long
धनद-वत्-ललना-वरूथी
like Kuber, by damsels in waiting

He Kardama, revelled, in the vallies of Mount Meru, the pleasure ground of the gaurdians of the eight directions, where cupid's friend the breeze made it pleasant, which is extolled by the Siddhaas, where the auspicious sound of the fall of the divine Ganga resounds, like Kubera, with many damsels in waiting.


वैश्रम्भके सुरसने नन्दने पुष्पभद्रके ।

मानसे चैत्ररथ्ये च स रेमे रामया रत: ॥४०॥


वैश्रम्भके सुरसने
in Vaishrambhaka, Sursana,
नन्दने पुष्पभद्रके
Nandana, Pushpabhadrak,
मानसे चैत्ररथ्ये च
Maanasarovar and Chaitrarathya,
स: रेमे रामया रत:
and he enjoyed, with beloved lovingly

He, with his beloved, lovingly enjoyed in the divine Vaishrambhaka, Surasana, Nandana, Pushpabhadraka, Maansarovara, and Cahitrarathya.


भ्राजिष्णुना विमानेन कामगेन महीयसा ।

वैमानिकानत्यशेत चरंल्लोकान् यथानिल: ॥४१॥


भ्राजिष्णुना विमानेन
by the brilliant Arial chariot
कामगेन महीयसा
wish fulfilling great
वैमानिकान्-अत्यशेत
(the other) Arial car borne, surpassed
चरन्-लोकान् यथा-अनिल:
passing through the spheres like wind

Kardama passed through the various spheres, surpassing the other arial cars borne, like wind, in the great and brilliant wish fulfilling arial chariot.


किं दुरापादनं तेषां पुंसामुद्दामचेतसाम् ।

यैराश्रितस्तीर्थपदश्चरणो व्यसनात्यय: ॥४२॥


किम् दुरापादनम्
what (is) unachievable
तेषाम् पुंसाम्-
by those people
उद्दाम-चेतसाम्
of righteous demeanour
यै:-आश्रित:-तीर्थपद:-
by whom shelter (is taken) in the holy
चरण: व्यसन-अत्यय:
feet (of The Lord), of sorrows the dispellers

What is not achieved by those righteous minded people who have taken shelter at the holy feet of the Lord, feet which are sorrow dispellers.


प्रेक्षयित्वा भुवो गोलं पत्न्यै यावान् स्वसंस्थया ।

बह्वाश्चर्यं महायोगी स्वाश्रमाय न्यवर्तत ॥४३॥


प्रेक्षयित्वा भुव: गोलम्
showing the terrestrial globe
पत्न्यै यावान् स्व-संस्थया
to his wife (Devahooti), which was by its own construction
बहु-आश्चर्यम् महायोगी
with many wonders, the great yogi
स्व-आश्रमाय न्यवर्तत
for his own hermitage returned

After the great yogi, Kardama, to his wife had shown the terrestrial globe, which was full of many wonders by virtue of its construction, returned to his own hermitage.


विभज्य नवधाऽऽत्मानं मानवीं सुरतोत्सुकाम् ।

रामां निरमयन् रेमे वर्षपूगान्मुहूर्तवत् ॥४४॥


विभज्य नवधा-आत्मानम्
dividing into nine himself
मानवीम् सुरत-उत्सुकाम्
Manu's daughter, sexual pleasure eager for
रामाम् निरमयन् रेमे
his wife delighted enjoyed
वर्षपूगान्-मुहूर्त-वत्
for years many, like an instant

He divided himself into nine, and delighted his wife, Manu's daughter, who was eager for sexual pleasure, and enjoyed for many years, as though for an instant.


तस्मिन् विमान उत्कृष्टां शय्यां रतिकरीं श्रिता ।

न चाबुध्यत तं कालं पत्यापीच्येन सङ्गता ॥४५॥


तस्मिन् विमाने उत्कृष्टाम्
in that Arial chariot, excellent
शय्याम् रतिकरीम् श्रिता
bed delightful lying
न च-अबुध्यत तम् कालम्
not and noticed that time
पत्या-अपीच्येन सङ्गता
with husband handsome accompanying

Devahooti, who was reclining with her handsome husband in that delightful and excellent bed, in that arial chariot, did not notice the passage of that much of time.


एवं योगानुभावेन दम्पत्यो: रममाणयो: ।

शतं व्यतीयु: शरद: कामलालसयोर्मनाक् ॥४६॥


एवम् योग-अनुभावेन
thus by yoga's effect
दम्पत्यो: रममाणयो:
the couple enjoying themselves
शतम् व्यतीयु: शरद:
hundreds passed autumns
काम-लालसयो:-मनाक्
for sense pleasures longing, in a short time

Thus, by the effect of yoga, as the couple was enjoying themselves, and also longing for sense pleasures, a hundred autumns passed in a short time.


तस्यामाधत्त रेतस्तां भावयन्नात्मनाऽऽत्मवित् ।

नोधा विधाय रूपं स्वं सर्वसङ्कल्पविद्विभु: ॥४७॥


तस्याम्-आधत्त रेत:-ताम्
in her placed seed, her
भावयन्-आत्मना-आत्म-वित्
regarding (like) himself, The Self Realized
नोधा विधाय रूपम् स्वम्
in nine dividing form his own
सर्व-सङ्कल्पवित्-विभु:
all desires knower, the lord (Kardama)

The Self Realized lord Kardama, the knower of all desires, divided his own form into nine and regarding her, Devahooti as his own self, placed his seed into her.


अत: सा सुषुवे सद्यो देवहूति: स्त्रिय: प्रजा: ।

सर्वास्ताश्चारुसर्वाङ्ग्यो लोहितोत्पलगन्धय: ॥४८॥


अत: सा सुषुवे सद्य:
afterwards she bore soon
देवहूति: स्त्रिय: प्रजा:
Devahooti, female issues
सर्वा:-ता:-चारु-सर्वाङ्ग्य:
all of them beautiful in all body
लोहित-उत्पल-गन्धय:
red lotus smelling

Afterwards, she, Devahooti, soon bore nine female issues, who were all beautiful in the body and also smelt of red lotuses.


पतिं सा प्रव्रजिष्यन्तं तदाऽऽलक्ष्योशती सती ।

स्मयमाना विक्लवेन हृदयेन विदूयता ॥४९॥


पतिम् सा प्रव्रजिष्यन्तम्
husband she, embarking as recluse
तदा-आलक्ष्य-उशतीम् सतीम्
then seeing, wish fulfilled virtuous lady
स्मयमाना विक्लवेन
smiled with pain
हृदयेन विदूयता
by heart troubled

When the wish fulfilled virtuous lady saw her husband embarking on being a recluse, with a troubled heart, she smiled in pain.


लिखन्त्यधोमुखी भूमिं पदा नखमणिश्रिया ।

उवाच ललितां वाचं निरुध्याश्रुकलां शनै: ॥५०॥


लिखन्ति-अधोमुखी भूमिम्
writing, bent head, on the ground
पदा नख-मणि-श्रिया
by feet, (toe) nail gem beautiful
उवाच ललिताम् वाचम्
said sweet words
निरुध्य-अश्रु-कलाम् शनै:
holding tears' flow slowly

She, with her head bent, holding the flow of tears, writing on the ground with beautiful feet having gem like toe nails, slowly spoke the sweet words.


देवहूति: उवाच -
Devahooti said -
सर्वं तद्भगवान्मह्यमुपोवाह प्रतिश्रुतम् ।

अथापि मे प्रपन्नाया: अभयं दातुमर्हसि ॥५१॥


सर्वम् तत्-भगवान्-मह्यम्-
all that, O lord! to me
उपोवाह प्रतिश्रुतम्
have given as promised
अथापि मे प्रपन्नाया:
yet to me, taken refuge (in you)
अभयम् दातुम्-अर्हसि
fearlessness, to grant are capable

O lord! You have given to me all that was promised. Yet, to me, who has taken refuge in you, do grant immunity from fear.


ब्रह्मन्दुहितृभिस्तुभ्यं विमृग्या: पतय: समा: ।

कश्चित्स्यान्मे विशोकाय त्वयि प्रव्रजिते वनम् ॥५२॥


ब्रह्मन्-दुहितृभि:-तुभ्यम्
O holy sage, for the daughters of yours
विमृग्या: पतय: समा:
are to be found husbands proper
कश्चित्-स्यात्-मे विशोकाय
someone should be for my non-sorrow
त्वयि प्रव्रजिते वनम्
when you leave for forest

O holy sage proper husbands are to looked for, for your daughters. And for me to be rid of sorrow, when you leave for the forest, there should be someone.


एतावतालं कालेन व्यतिक्रान्तेन मे प्रभो ।

इन्द्रियार्थप्रसङ्गेन परित्यक्तपरात्मन: ॥५३॥


एतावत-अलम् कालेन
till now enough time
व्यतिक्रान्तेन मे प्रभो
has been spent by me O lord!
इन्द्रिय-अर्थ-प्रसङ्गेन
by sense and material objects
परित्यक्त-पर-आत्मन:
ignored, the Supreme Spirit

O lord! Till now enough of time has been spent by me in the pursuit of sense and material pleasure, and I have ignored the Supreme Spirit altogather.


इन्द्रियार्थेषु सञ्जन्त्या प्रसङ्गस्त्वयि मे कृत: ।

अजानन्त्या परं भावं तथाप्यस्त्वभयाय मे ॥५४॥


इन्द्रिय-अर्थेषु सञ्जन्त्या
in sense and material pursuit
प्रसङ्ग:-त्वयि मे कृत:
love in you, I have placed
अजानन्त्या परम् भावम्
not knowing (your) supreme glory
तथा-अपि-अस्तु-अभयाय मे
then also may it be for fearlessness for me

I have placed my love in you even though I was attached to sense and material pleasure. It was because I was not aware of your supreme glory. Non-the-less, may this love for you be to rid me from fear.


सङ्गो य: संसृतेर्हेतुरसत्सु विहितोऽधिया ।

स एव साधुषु कृतो नि:सङ्गत्वाय कल्पते ॥५५॥


सङ्ग: य: संसृते:-हेतु:-
company which (is for) rebirth conducive
असत्सु विहित:-अधिया
in the wicked placed by ignorance
स: एव साधुषु कृत:
that itself, in the righteous (people) placed
नि:सङ्गत्वाय कल्पते
for dispassion is directed

The companionship which is placed in the wicked, due to ignorence, is conducive to rebirth. That same companionship when placed in the righteous, directs one to dispassion.


नेह यत्कर्म धर्माय न विरागाय कल्पते ।

न तीर्थपदसेवायै जीवन्न्पि मृतो हि स: ॥५६॥


न-इह यत्-कर्म धर्माय
not here that activity, (which) for religion
न विरागाय कल्पते
nor for dispassion is performed
न तीर्थ-पद-सेवायै
neither for the holy feet (Lord's) service
जीवन्-अपि मृत: हि स:
living also, dead indeed is he

In this world, he whose activity is not for the benefit of religion, nor for dispassion neither for the service of The Lord, Whose feet are holy like pilgrimages, he, even though living, is dead.


साहं भगवतो नूनं वञ्चिता मायया दृढम् ।

यत्त्वां विमुक्तिदं प्राप्य न मुमुक्षेय बन्धनात् ॥५७॥


सा-अहम् भगवत: नूनम्
that I, by the Lord certainly
वञ्चिता मायया दृढम्
deceived by Maayaa badly
यत्-त्वाम् विमुक्तिदम् प्राप्य
in that you, the liberation granting, having got
न मुमुक्षेय बन्धनात्
did not (seek) liberation from bondage

I am badly decieved by the Lord's Maayaa, in that, even having got you, the liberation bestower, I did not seek liberation from bondage from the world.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां तृतीय स्कन्धे कापिलेयोपाख्याने त्रयोविंशोऽध्याय: समाप्त: ॥२३॥


Thus ends the twenty-third discourse, forming part of the narrative of Lord Kapila, in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
