मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
निर्वेदवादिनीमेवं मनोर्दुहितरं मुनि: ।

दयालु:शालिनीमाह शुक्लाभिव्याहृतंस्मरन् ॥१॥


निर्वेद-वादिनीम्-एवम्
dispassion talking of, thus
मनो:-दुहितरम्
to Manu's daughter
मुनि: दयालु:
the sage merciful
शालिनीम्-आह
to the well-behaved one, said
शुक्ल-
of Lord Vishnu's
अभिव्याहृतम्-स्मरन्
words recalled

The merciful sage, spoke to the demure daughter of Manu, who was talking of dispassion, recalling Lord Vishnu's words, thus…


ऋषि: उवाच -
The sage said -
मा खिदो राजपुत्रीत्थमात्मानं प्रत्यनिन्दिते ।

भगवांस्तेऽक्षरो गर्भमदूरात्सम्प्रपत्स्यते ॥२॥


मा खिद: राजपुत्रि-इत्थम-
do not worry O Princess! like this,
आत्मानम् प्रति-अनिन्दिते
yourself towards, undefiled
भगवान्-ते-अक्षर: गर्भम्-
The Lord in your, The Immortal, womb
अदूरात्-सम्प्रपत्स्यते
without delay will enter

O Undefamed Princess! Do not thus worry about yourself. Without delay, The Immortal Lord will enter your womb.


धृतव्रतासि भद्रं ते दमेन नियमेन च ।

तपोद्रविणदानैश्च श्रद्धया चेश्वरं भज ॥३॥


धृत-व्रत-असि भद्रम् ते
undertaken vows (you) have, blessings to you
दमेन नियमेन च
by (self) control and discipline,
तप:-द्रविण-दानै:-च
austerities, and money charity
श्रद्धया च-ईश्वरम् भज
and with reverence, The Lord worship

You have undertaken many a vows. Blessings to you. Now with reverence worship The Lord also with self control, discipline, austerities, and charity of money.


स त्वयाऽऽराधित: शुक्लो वितन्वन्मामकं यश: ।

छेत्ता ते हृदयग्रन्थिमौदर्यो ब्रह्मभावन: ॥४॥


स: त्वया-आराधित: शुक्ल:
He, by you worshipped, Lord Vishnu
वितन्वन्-मामकम् यश:
spreading my fame
छेत्ता ते हृदय-ग्रन्थिम्-
cutter of your heart's knot
औदर्य: ब्रह्म-भावन:
born of (your) womb, of Supreme Spirit (will) instruct

He, Lord Vishnu, when worshipped by you will be born of your womb and will not only spread my fame but also cut off the knot of ignorance of your heart, by instructing you of the Supreme Spirit.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
देवहूत्यपि संदेशं गौरवेण प्रजापते: ।

सम्यक् श्रद्धाय पुरुषं कूटस्थमभजद्गुरुम् ॥५॥


देवहूति-अपि संदेशम्
Devahooti also, the message
गौरवेण प्रजापते:
with reverence of Prajaapati (Kardama)
सम्यक् श्रद्धाय पुरुषम्
well in faith, The Person
कूटस्थम्-अभजत्-गुरुम्
Indwelling, worshipped The Preceptor

Devahooti also followed the message of Prajaapati Kardama with reverence, and worshipped The Indwelling Supreme Person with full faith as The Preceptor of the world.


तस्यां बहुतिथे काले भगवान्मधुसूदन: ।

कार्दमं वीर्यमापन्नो जज्ञेऽग्निरिव दारुणि ॥६॥


तस्याम् बहुतिथे काले
in her (Devahooti), much passed time
भगवान्-मधुसूदन:
The Lord Madhusoodana
कार्दमम् वीर्यम्-आपन्न:
by Kardama's (generative) fluid supported,
जज्ञे-अग्नि:-इव दारुणि
took birth, fire like in wood

After much time had passed, taking support of Kardama's generative fluid, The Lord Madhusoodana, took birth in Devahooti, just as fire is born of wood.


अवादयंस्तदा व्योम्नि वादित्राणि घनाघना: ।

गायन्ति तं स्म गन्धर्वा नृत्यन्तप्सरसो मुदा ॥७॥


अवादयन्-तदा व्योम्नि
sounding then in the sky
वादित्राणि घना-घना:
drums, (like) the rain clouds
गायन्ति तम् स्म गन्धर्वा:
sang to him, did the Gandharvaas
नृत्यन्ति-अप्सरस: मुदा
danced the Apsaraas with joy

At the time of His birth, the rain clouds thundered in the sky as though sounding the drums. The Gandharvaas, the celestial bards, sang His praises, and the Apsaraas, the celestial nymphs, danced with joy.


पेतु: सुमनसो दिव्या: खेचरैरपवर्जिता: ।

प्रसेदुश्च दिश: सर्वा अम्भांसि च मनांसि च ॥८॥


पेतु: सुमनस: दिव्या:
rained flowers divine
खेचरै:-अपवर्जिता:
by the gods showered
प्रसेदु:-च दिश: सर्वा
pleasant and the quarters all
अम्भांसि च मनांसि च
the waters and the minds

The divine flowers showered by the gods rained. All the quarters, the waters and the minds of people became pleasant.


तत्कर्दमाश्रमपदं सरस्वत्या परिश्रितम् ।

स्वम्भू: साकमृषिभिर्मरीच्यादिभिरभ्ययात् ॥९॥


तत्-कर्दम-आश्रम-पदम्
(to) that Kardama's aashramas place
सरस्वत्या परिश्रितम्
by Saraswati (river) surrounded
स्वम्भू: साकम्-ऋषिभि:-
the self-born Brahmaa, along with sages
मरीचि-आदिभि:-अभ्ययात्
Mareechi and others went

To the place of Kardam's hermitage, which was surrounded by the river Saraswati, the self-born Brahmaa, went along with Marichi and other sages.


भगवन्तं परं ब्रह्म सत्त्वेनांशेन शत्रुहन् ।

तत्त्वसंख्यानविज्ञप्त्यै जातं विद्वानज: स्वराट् ॥१०॥


भगवन्तम् परम् ब्रह्म
The Lord, the Supreme Brahma
सत्त्वेन-अंशेन शत्रुहन्
with Saatvic properties, O Enemy of enemies! (Vidura)
तत्त्व-संख्यान-विज्ञप्त्यै जातम्
the system of Saankhya to propound is born
विद्वान्-अज: स्वराट्
the all knower Brahmaa, by his own light (of wisdom)

O Enemy of the enemies! The Supreme Lord, possessing of Saatvic properties, has descended, to propound the system of Sankhyaa, this, the knowlegeable Brahmaa knew by his own light of wisdom.


सभाजयन् विशुद्धेन चेतसा तच्चिकीर्षितम् ।

प्रहृष्यमाणैरसुभि: कर्दमं चेदमभ्यधात् ॥११॥


सभाजयन् विशुद्धेन चेतसा
honouring with a pure mind
तत्-चिकीर्षितम्
His intention (of birth)
प्रहृष्यमाणै:-असुभि:
with delighted senses
कर्दमम् च-इदम्-अभ्यधात्
to Kardama and this said

Brahmaa with a pure mind, honoured the Intentions of The Lord for His birth, and with delighted senses, said thus to Kardama ….


ब्रह्मा-उवाच-
Brahmaa said -
त्वया मेऽपचितिस्तात कल्पिता निर्व्यलीकत: ।

यन्मे सञ्जगृहे वाक्यं भवान्मानद मानयन् ॥१२॥


त्वया मे-अपचिति:-
by you, my worship
तात कल्पिता निर्व्यलीकत:
O Son! Is performed without any shortcoming
यत्-मे सञ्जगृहे वाक्यम्
in that my undertook order
भवान्-मानद मानयन्
you, O respecter of elders! and respected (it)

O respecter of elders, Son! You have performed my worship without any shortcommings, in that, you have carried out my order and respected it too.


एतावत्येव शुश्रुषा कार्या पितरि पुत्रकै: ।

बाढमित्यनुमन्येत गौरवेण गुरोर्वच: ॥१३॥


एतावती-एव शुश्रुषा कार्या
like this only service should be done
पितरि पुत्रकै:
to the parents by the sons
बाढम्-इति-अनुमन्येत
'Very Well', thus agreeing
गौरवेण गुरो:-वच:
with honour elders instruction

In this manner only a service should be given to a parent by the sons. Saying 'very well' and honouring the biddings of the elders.


इमा दुहितर: सभ्य तव वत्स सुमध्यमा: ।

सर्गमेतं प्रभावै: स्वैर्बृंहयिष्यन्त्यनेकधा ॥१४॥


इमा: दुहितर: सभ्य
these daughters honourable
तव वत्स सुमध्यमा:
yours' O Son! slender waisted
सर्गम्-एतम् प्रभावै: स्वै:-
creation this by descendents theirs
बृहयिष्यन्ति-अनेकधा
will multiply manifolds

O Son! These slender waisted honourable daughters of yours will multiply this creation manifold by their own descendents.


अतस्त्वमृषिमुख्येभ्यो यथाशीलं यथारुचि ।

आत्मजा: परिदेह्यद्य विस्तृणीहि यशो भुवि ॥१५॥


अत:-त्वम्-ऋषि-मुख्येभ्य:
therefore, you, to the sages foremost
यथा-शीलम् यथा-रुचि
as per temperament, as per liking
आत्मजा: परिदेहि-अद्य
the daughters do give today
विस्तृणीहि यश: भुवि
and spread may fame on the earth

Therefore, today give your daughters to the foremost sages, as per temperament and as per liking, and may your fame spread on this earth.


वेदाहमाद्यं पुरुषमवतीर्णं स्वमायया ।

भूतानां शेवधिं देहं बिभ्राणं कपिलं मुने ॥१६॥


वेद-अहम्-आद्यम् पुरुषम्-
know I, The Primary Person
अवतीर्णम् स्व-मायया
descended by (His) own Maayaa
भूतानाम् शेवधिम् देहम्
of the beings' valuable treasure, the body
बिभ्राणम् कपिलम् मुने
adorning as Kapila, O Sage! (Kardama)

O Sage Kardama! I know that The Primary Person, through His own Maayaa, has descended, adorned in the body, which is a valuable treasure of the living beings, as Kapil.


ज्ञानविज्ञानयोगेन कर्मणामुद्धरन् जटा: ।

हिरण्यकेश: पद्माक्ष: पद्ममुद्रापदाम्बुज: ॥१७॥


ज्ञान-विज्ञान-योगेन
by knowledge and realization combined
कर्मणाम्-उद्धरन् जटा:
of actions' cutting off the roots
हिरण्य-केश: पद्म-आक्ष:
golden haired, lotus eyed
पद्म-मुद्रा-पद-अम्बुज:
lotus marked, lotus feet

He has come to cutt off the roots of the actions, Karma, by knowledge and realization of the Self. He has golden hair, and lotus like eyes, and His lotus feet are marked with the signs of lotus.


एष मानवि ते गर्भं प्रविष्ट: कैटभार्दन: ।

अविद्यासंशयग्रन्थिं छित्वा गां विचरिष्यति ॥१८॥


एष मानवि ते गर्भम्
He, O Manu's daughter (Devahooti), your womb
प्रविष्ट: कैटभ-अर्दन:
entering, Kaitabha's slayer,
अविद्या-संशय-ग्रन्थिम् छित्वा
ignorance and doubt, knots cutting
गाम् विचरिष्यति
the earth will roam

O Manu's daughter, Devahooti! He, Kaitabha's slayer, Vishnu, by being born through your womb will roam the earth, cutting the knots of ignorence and misapprehension.


अयं सिद्धगणाधीश: साङ्ख्याचार्यै: सुसम्मत: ।

लोके कपिल इत्याख्यां गन्ता ते कीर्तिवर्धन: ॥१९॥


अयम् सिद्ध-गण-अधीश:
He, of the Siddha people The Lord
साङ्ख्य-आचार्यै: सुसम्मत:
by the Saankhya teachers esteemed
लोके कपिल: इति-आख्याम्
in the world, Kapila, thus called
गन्ता ते कीर्ति-वर्धन:
well known, your fame increases

He is the Lord of the Siddha people, and is esteemed by the teachers of Sankhya philosophy. He will be well known in the world as Kapila and will increase your fame.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
तावाश्वास्य जगत्स्रष्टा कुमारै: सहनारद: ।

हंसो हंसेन यानेन त्रिधामपरमं ययौ ॥२०॥


तौ-आश्वास्य जगत्-स्रष्टा
both of them reassuring, the world's creator
कुमारै: सह-नारद:
with the (Sanat) Kumaaras, Naarada
हंस: हंसेन यानेन
Brahmaa, by (his) swan mount
त्रि-धाम-परमम् ययौ
the three worlds beyond went

The creator of the universe, Brahmaa, along with the Sanat Kumaaras and Naarada, went away beyond the three worlds, mounted on his mount the swan.


गते शतधृतौ क्षत्त: कर्दमस्तेन चोदित: ।

यथोदितं स्वदुहितृ: प्रादाद्विश्वसृजां तत: ॥२१॥


गते शतधृतौ क्षत्त:
having left Brahmaa, O Vidura!
कर्दम:-तेन चोदित:
Kardama, by him encouraged
यथा-उदितम् स्व-दुहितृ:
as said, his daughters
प्रादात्-विश्वसृजाम् तत:
gave to the Prajaapatis, then

O Vidura! After Brahmaa had gone, as encouraged by him, Kardama then gave in marriage his daughters to Marichi and other Prajaapatis.


मरीचये कलां प्रादादनसोयामथात्रये ।

श्रद्धामङ्गिरसेऽयच्छत्पुलस्त्याय हविर्भुवम् ॥२२॥


मरीचये कलाम् प्रादात्-
to Mareechi, Kalaa gave
अनसोयाम्-अथ-अत्रये
Anasooyaa then to Atri
श्रद्धाम्-अङ्गिरसे-अयच्छत्-
Shraddhaa to Angirasa gave
पुलस्त्याय हविर्भुवम्
for Pulastya Havirbhoo

Kardama gave in marriage his daughter Kalaa to Mareechi, then, Anasooyaa to Atri, Shraddhaa to Angirasa and Havirbhoo to Pulastya.


पुलहाय गतिं युक्तां क्रतवे च क्रियां सतीम् ।

ख्यातिं च भृगवेऽयच्छद्वसिष्ठायाप्यरुन्धतीम् ॥२३॥


पुलहाय गतिम् युक्ताम्
to Pulaha, Gati, the worthy
क्रतवे च क्रियाम् सतीम्
to Kratu and Kriyaa the noble
ख्यातिम् च भृगवे-अयच्छत्-
Khyaati and to Bhrigu gave
वसिष्ठाया-अपि-अरुन्धतीम्
and to Vashishtha Arundhati

He gave the worthy Gati to Pulaha, and the noble Kriyaa to Kratu, Khyaati to Bhrigu and Arundhati to Vashishtha.


अथर्वणेऽददाच्छान्तिं यया यज्ञो वितन्यते ।

विप्रर्षभान् कृतोद्वाहान् सदारान् समलालयत् ॥२४॥


अथर्वणे-अददात्-शान्तिम्
to Atharva gave Shaanti
यया यज्ञ: वितन्यते
by whom sacrifices are conducted
विप्र-ऋषभान् कृत-उद्वाहान्
to the Braahmana foremost, having married
सदारान् समलालयत्
with (their) wives honoured

Kardama gave Shanti to Atharvaa, by whom the sacrifices are accomplished. Having married the foremost sages, he honoured them along with their wives.


ततस्त ऋषय: क्षत्त: कृतदारा निमन्त्र्य तम् ।

प्रातिष्ठन्नन्दिमापन्ना: स्वं स्वमाश्रममण्डलम् ॥२५॥


तत:-ते ऋषय: क्षत्त:
then those sages, O Vidura!
कृत-दारा: निमन्त्र्य तम्
having wives permitted by him
प्रातिष्ठन्-नन्दिम्-आपन्ना:
departed, happiness having
स्वम् स्वम्-आश्रम-मण्डलम्
to own hermitage places

O Vidura! Then, those sages, being married, with their wives took leave of Kardama, and happily departed to their respective hermitage places.


स चावतीर्णं त्रियुगमाज्ञाय विबुधार्षभम् ।

विविक्त उपसङ्गम्य प्रणम्य समभाषत ॥२६॥


स: च-अवतीर्णम् त्रियुगम्-
he (Kardama) and (has) descended the three fold Lord
आज्ञाय विबुध-ऋषभम्
knowing, the gods' foremost
विविक्ते उपसङ्गम्य
in solitude approached
प्रणम्य समभाषत
bowed and said

And Kardama knew that the three fold Lord Vishnu had descended, Who is the foremost of the gods. When He was alone, Kardama approached Him and said…


अहो पापच्यमानानां निरये स्वैरमङ्गलै: ।

कालेन भूयसा नूनं प्रसीदन्तीह देवता: ॥२७॥


अहो पापच्यमानानाम्
Alas! by evil results tormented
निरये स्वै:-अमङ्गलै:
in this (tormenting) world, by own misdeeds
कालेन भूयसा नूनम्
by time very long, indeed
प्रसीदन्ति-इह देवता:
are pleased here the gods

Alas! On people, in this world, who are sufferring because of the evil results of their own misdeeds, after a long time, indeed, here, the gods are pleased.


बहुजन्मविपक्वेन सम्यग्योगसमाधिना ।

द्रष्टुं यतन्ते यतय: शून्यागारेषु यत्पदम् ॥२८॥


बहु-जन्म-विपक्वेन
many lives ripened well
सम्यक्-योग-समाधिना
by Yoga and deep concentration
द्रष्टुम् यतन्ते यतय:
to see, endeavour the Yogis
शून्य-आगारेषु यत्-पदम्
in lonely places, Whose feet

After having endeavoured for many lives, and practicing Yoga and deep concentration, to a well matured stage, the Yogis seek to see Whose feet,…..


स एव भगवानद्य हेलनं नगणय्य न: ।

गृहेषु जातो ग्राम्याणां य: स्वानां पक्षपोषण: ॥२९॥


स: एव भगवान्-अद्य
That same Lord, today
हेलनम् नगणय्य न:
de-fame ignoring, in our
गृहेषु जात: ग्राम्याणाम्
house is born, the sensual men
य: स्वानाम् पक्ष-पोषण:
Who, His devotees nurtures

That same Lord, Who nurtures His own devotees, ignoring de-fame, is born today, in the house of we sensual men.


स्वीयं वाक्यमृतं कर्तुमवतीर्णॊऽसि मे गृहे ।

चिकीर्षुर्भगवान् ज्ञानं भक्तानां मानवर्धन: ॥३०॥


स्वीयम् वाक्यम्-ऋतम्
Own pledge to truth
कर्तुम्-अवतीर्ण:-असि
prove, have descended You
मे गृहे चिकीर्षु:-भगवान्
in my house, to propound, The Lord,
ज्ञानम् भक्तानाम् मान-वर्धन:
knowledge (of Saankhya), of devotees dignity to enhance

The Lord You, Who is eager to enhance the dignity of His devotees, have descended in my house to prove Your own pledge to be True, and to propound the knowledge of Saankhya philosophy.


तान्येव तेऽभिरूपाणि भगवंस्तव ।

यानि यानि च रोचन्ते स्वजनानामरूपिण: ॥३१॥


तानि-एव ते-अभिरूपाणि
those alone, Your transcendent forms
भगवन्-तव
O Lord! Your
यानि यानि च रोचन्ते
those which and are dear
स्व-जनानाम्-अरूपिण:
(to Your) own people (devotees) of The Formless

O formless Lord! Those of Your transcendent forms whch appeal to your own devotees, those forms only are dear to You also.


त्वां सूरिभिस्तत्त्वबुभुत्सयाद्धा सदाभिवादार्हणपादपीठम् ।

ऐश्वर्यवैराग्ययशोऽवबोधवीर्यश्रिया पूर्त्तमहं प्रपद्ये ॥३२॥


त्वाम् सूरिभि:-
to You, by the stalwarts
तत्त्व-बुभुत्सया-अद्धा
of the Supreme Knowledge eager, O Lord!
सदा-अभिवाद-अर्हण-
always of worship worthy
पाद-पीठम् ऐश्वर्य-
feet stool, (in) energy,
वैराग्य-यश:-अवबोध-
dispassion, fame, wisdom,
वीर्य-श्रिया पूर्त्तम्-
power and affluence, are endowed
अहम् प्रपद्ये
I take refuge

Those stalwart sages keen on the knowledge of The Supreme, your foot stool is worthy of their worship, they, who are endowed with energy, dispassion, fame wisdom, power and affluence. O Lord ! I take refuge in that You.


परं प्रधानं पुरुषं महान्तं कालं कविं त्रिवृतं लोकपालम् ।

आत्मानुभूत्यानुगतप्रपञ्चं स्वच्छन्दशक्तिं कपिलं प्रपद्ये ॥३३॥


परम् प्रधानम् पुरुषम्
The Supreme Primordial Person,
महान्तम् कालम् कविम्
the Mahat-tatva, Time, intelligence
त्रिवृतम् लोकपालम्
three fold, the spheres and their guardians
आत्म-अनुभूत्या-अनुगत-
by Self Knowledge spread over
प्रपञ्चम् स्वच्छन्द-शक्तिम्
the creation, of independent powers
कपिलम् प्रपद्ये
to Kapila I bow down

I bow down to You Kapil who is the Supreme matter, The Primordial Person, The Mahat-tatva, The Time, The Intelligence, The threefold (Satvic, Raajasic, Taamasic) universe, The Spheres and their gaurdians, by Your Self Knowledge spread over the creation, and having independent powers.


आ स्माभिपृच्छेऽद्य पतिं प्रजानां त्वयावतीर्णार्ण उताप्तकाम: ।

परिव्रजत्पदवीमास्थितोऽहं चरिष्ये त्वां हृदि युञ्जन् विशोक: ॥३४॥


आ स्म-अभिपृच्छे-अद्य
of You (I take) permission, today,
पतिम् प्रजानाम्
The Lord of creation
त्वया-अवतीर्ण-ऋण:
by Your descent, freed of debt
उत-आप्त-काम:
and indeed fulfilled of desires
परिव्रजत्-पदवीम्-आस्थित:-
in recluse state established
अहम्-चरिष्ये त्वाम् हृदि
I will roam, You In (my) heart
युञ्जन् विशोक:
contemplating, without sorrow

Today, I take permission of You, O Lord of All creation, to be established in the state of a recluse. By Your descent, I am acquitted of debt, to my father, Brahmaa. All my desires have been fulfilled. I will roam about contemplating on You in my heart, bereft of all sorrow.


श्रीभगवन् उवाच -
The Lord said -
मया प्रोक्तं हि लोकस्य प्रमाणं सत्यलौकिके ।

अथाजनि मया तुभ्यं यदवोचमृतं मुने ॥३५॥


मया प्रोक्तम् हि
by me said itself (is)
लोकस्य प्रमाणम्
to the world authority
सत्य-लौकिके
in sacred and secular (matters)
अथ-अजनि मया
therefore (I) took birth, by Me
तुभ्यम् यत्-अवोचम्-
to you, what I had said
ऋतम् मुने
to be true O sage!

O Sage! What ever I say is authority to the world, in sacred and secular matters. Therefore, to prove what I said to you to be true, I have taken this birth.


एतन्मे जन्म लोकेऽस्मिन्मुमुक्षूणां दुराशयात् ।

प्रसंख्यानाय तत्त्वानां सम्मतायात्मदर्शने ॥३६॥


एतत्-मे जन्म लोके-अस्मिन्-
this My birth, in world this
मुमुक्षूणाम् दुराशयात्
for the liberation desirous, from subtle body
प्रसंख्यानाय तत्त्वानाम्
to propound the categories (25)
सम्मताय-आत्म-दर्शने
helpful in self-realization

In this world, this birth of mine is to propound the nature of the 25 categories of matter. This is helpful in self-realization, for the people who are keen on being liberated from the subtle body.


एष आत्मपथोऽव्यक्तो नष्ट: कालेन भूयसा ।

तं प्रवर्तयितुं देहमिमं विद्धि मया भृतम् ॥३७॥


एष: आत्म-पथ:-अव्यक्त:
this self (knowledge) path, (being) mysterious,
नष्ट: कालेन भूयसा
was lost, time long back
तम् प्रवर्तयितुम् देहम्-इमम्
that to revive, body this
विद्धि: मया भृतम्
know that by Me is taken

Know that this body is taken on by Me to revive the mysterious path of Self-Realisation, which was lost long time back.


गच्छ कामं मयाऽऽपृष्टो मयि संन्यस्तकर्मणा ।

जित्वा सुदुर्जयं मृत्युममृतत्वाय मां भज ॥३८॥


गच्छ कामम् मया-आपृष्ट:
go, as desired, by Me allowed
मयि संन्यस्त-कर्मणा
in Me dedicating the actions
जित्वा सुदुर्जयम् मृत्युम्-
by winning , the difficult to win death
अमृतत्वाय माम् भज
for deathlessness Me worship

You may go to wherever you desire, as allowed by Me. By dedicating all your actions to Me, win over death, which is difficult to win. Then, with the aim of immortality, worship Me.


मामात्मानं स्वयंज्योति: सर्वभूतगुहाशयम् ।

आत्मन्येवात्मना वीक्ष्य विशोकोऽभयमृच्छसि ॥३९॥


माम-आत्मानम्
Me, The Spirit
स्वयम्-ज्योति:
self effulgent
सर्व-भूत-गुहा-आशयम्
in all beings' hearts dwelling
आत्मनि-एव-आत्मना वीक्ष्य
in self only, by self beholding
विशोक:-अभयम्-ऋच्छसि
sorrow less, fearlessness will attain

I am the self effulgent supreme spirit dwelling in the hearts of all beings. You will behold Me in your own self by your own intelligence, and will become sorrowless and will attain fearlessness.


मात्र आध्यात्मिकीं विद्यां शमनीं सर्वकर्मणाम् ।

वितरिष्ये यया चासौ भयं चातितरिष्यति ॥४०॥


मात्रे आध्यात्मिकीम् विद्याम्
to mother, the spiritual knowledge
शमनीम् सर्व-कर्मणाम्
the pacifier of all action (bondages)
वितरिष्ये यया च-असौ
will impart, by which she
भयम् च-अतितरिष्यति
fear will overcome

I will impart the spiritual knowledge to My mother, Devahooti, which sets one free of all action generated bondage. So that she will overcome all fear of transmigration.


मैत्रेय उवाच् -
Maitreya said -
एवं समुदितस्तेन कपिलेन प्रजापति: ।

दक्षिणीकृत्य तं प्रीतो वनमेव जगाम ह ॥४१॥


एवम् समुदित:-तेन
thus spoken to by Him
कपिलेन प्रजापति:
Kapila, Prajaapati (Kardama)
दक्षिणीकृत्य तम्
going round Him
प्रीत: वनम्-एव जगाम ह
with delight, to the forest went indeed

When Kardama was thus spoken to by Him Kapil, he went around Him, and with delight rightaway went away to the forest.


व्रतं स आस्थितो मौनमात्मैकशरणो मुनि: ।

नि:सङ्गो व्यचरत्क्षोणीमनग्निरनिकेतन: ॥४२॥


व्रतम् स: आस्थित:
in vows he established
मौनम्-आत्म-एक-शरण:
silence, Self alone depending on
मुनि: नि:सङ्ग: व्यचरत्-
the sage, without company roamed
क्षोणीम्-अनग्नि:-अनिकेतन:
the earth, without fire and dwelling

The sage was established in vows of silence etc., was without company and entirely depending on the Self, as he roamed the earth giving up the use of fire and dwelling.


मनो ब्रह्मणि युञ्जानो यत्तत्सदसत: परम् ।

गुणावभासे विगुण एकभक्त्यानुभाविते ॥४३॥


मन: ब्रह्मणि युञ्जान:
mind, in Brahman fixed
यत्-तत्-सत्-असत: परम्
which from that, cause effect beyond
गुण-अवभासे विगुण:
the Gunas reveals, (though) devoid of Gunas
एक-भक्त्या-अनुभाविते
by single (minded) devotion is pleased

He, Kardama, fixed his mind on Brahman, that which is beyond cause and effect, Who is devoid of Gunas but brings them to light, and is pleased by single minded devotion.


निरहंकृतिर्निर्ममश्च निर्द्वन्द्व: समदृक् स्वदृक् ।

प्रत्यक्प्रशान्तधीर्धीर: प्रशान्तोर्मिरिवोदधि: ॥४४॥


निरहंकृति:-निर्मम:-च
without ego, without mine-ness and
निर्द्वन्द्व: समदृक्
without (sense of) dualities, seeing as equal
स्वदृक् प्रत्यक्-प्रशान्त-
self watching, inward, very calm
धी:-धीर: प्रशान्त-
minded and composed, very calm
उर्मि:-इव-उदधि:
waves like ocean

Kardama was without ego, without the feeling of mine-ness, without the sense of dualities. He looked at everyone as equal, and was always watching himself, had become introvert, very calm minded and composed, like an ocean with calm waves.


वासुदेवे भगवति सर्वज्ञे प्रत्यगात्मनि।

परेण भक्तिभावेन लब्धात्मा मुक्तबन्धन: ॥४५॥


वासुदेवे भगवति
in Vaasudeva, The Lord
सर्वज्ञे प्रत्यक्-आत्मनि
the All Knower, and in Dweller of all souls
परेण भक्ति-भावेन
by supreme devotional attitude
लब्ध-आत्मा
realized self
मुक्त-बन्धन:
free of bondage

Kardama, by his mind fixed on The Lord Vaasudeva, Who is the All Knower, the in-Dweller of all souls, and with his supreme devotional attitude, gained self-realisation and was free of all bondage.


आत्मानं सर्वभूतेषु भगवन्तमवस्थितम् ।

अपश्यत्सर्वभूतानि भगवत्यपि चात्मनि ॥४६॥


आत्मानम् सर्व-भूतेषु
as self in all beings
भगवन्तम्-अवस्थितम्
The Lord present
अपश्यत्-सर्वभूतानि
seeing, all beings
भगवति-अपि
in Lord also
च-आत्मनि
and in himself

He saw The Lord as the Self in all beings, and the beings in The Lord and also in himself.


इच्छाद्वेषविहीनेन सर्वत्र समचेतसा ।

भगवद्भक्तियुक्तेन प्राप्ता भागवती गति: ॥४७॥


इच्छा-द्वेष-विहीनेन
desire and malice without
सर्वत्र सम-चेतसा
in all even minded
भगवत्-भक्ति युक्तेन
Lord's devotion endowed,
प्राप्ता भागवती गति:
attained Lord's state

Kardama was desireless, without malice and was even minded towards all. He was endowed with Lord's devotion, and so he attained The Lord's state.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां सं हितायां तृतीयस्कन्धे कपिलेये चतुर्विंशोऽध्याय: समाप्त: ॥२४॥


Thus ends the twenty-fourth discourse, forming part of the 'Story of Lord Kapil' in Book Three of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
