मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
मनोस्तु शतरूपायां तिस्र: कन्याश्च जज्ञिरे ।

आकूतिर्देवहूतिश्च प्रसूतिरिति विश्रुता: ॥१॥


मनो:-तु शतरूपायाम्
of Manu indeed from Shataroopaa
तिस्र: कन्या:-च जज्ञिरे
three daughters and were born
आकूति:-देवहूति:-च
Aakooti, Devahooti and
प्रसूति:-इति विश्रुता:
Prasooti thus called

To Manu, indeed, three daughters were born from Shataroopa. They were called by the names, Aakooti, Devahooti, and Prasooti.


आकूतिं रुचये प्रादादपि भ्रातृमतीं नृप: ।

पुत्रिकाधर्ममाश्रित्य शतरूपानुमोदित: ॥२॥


आकूतिम् रुचये प्रादात्-
Aakooti, for Ruchi gave (in marriage)
अपि भ्रातृमतीम् नृप:
even brother having, the king
पुत्रिका-धर्मम्-आश्रित्य
the Pootrika system to adhere to
शतरूपा-अनुमोदित:
by Shataroopaa consented

Manu gave Aakooti to Ruchi in marriage. Even though Aakooti had brothers, it was to adhere to the Pootrika system, that he did so, which was consented to by Shataroopaa.


प्रजापति: स भगवान् रुचिस्तस्यामजीजनत् ।

मिथुनं ब्रह्मवर्चस्वी परमेण समाधिना ॥३॥


प्रजापति: स: भगवान्
the Lord of created beings, he the worshipful
रुचि:-तस्याम्-अजीजनत्
Ruchi, from her gave birth to
मिथुनम् ब्रह्मवर्चस्वी
a male and female, (he) having qualities of Brahman
परमेण समाधिना
by intense concentration

The worshipful Ruchi, the lord of the created beings, having the qualities of Brahman, and by intense concentration, from her, Aakooti, gave birth to a male and a female.


यस्तयो: पुरुष: साक्षाद्विष्णुर्यज्ञस्वरूपधृक् ।

या स्त्री सा दक्षिणा भूतेरंशभूताऽनपायिनी ॥४॥


य:-तयो: पुरुष: साक्षात्-
(the one) who among them, male, (was) incarnate
विष्णु:-यज्ञ-स्वरूप-धृक्
Vishnu, of sacrifices' form taking
या स्त्री सा दक्षिणा
(the one) who was the female, she (was) Dakshinaa
भूते:-अंश-भूता-अनपायिनी
of Lakshmi part incarnation, inseparable (of Vishnu)

Of the two, the male was Vishnu incarnate, taking on the form of sacrifices. And the one who was the female, she was Dakshina, the part incarnate of Lakshmi, and so inseperable to Vishnu.


आनिन्ये स्वगृहं पुत्र्या: पुत्रं विततरोचिषम् ।

स्वायम्भुवो मुदा युक्तो रुचिर्जग्राह दक्षिणाम् ॥५॥


आनिन्ये स्व-गृहम्

of boundless glory

Ruchi took Dakshinaa

Swaayambhuva Manu, full of joy, braught his daughter's son, who had boundless glory, to his own house, and Ruchi took Dakshinaa and braught her up as his own daughter.


तां कामयानां भगवानुवाह यजुषां पति: ।

तुष्टायां तोषमापन्नोऽजनयद् द्वादशात्मजान् ॥६॥


ताम् कामयानाम् भगवान्-
her desiring, The Lord
उवाह यजुषाम् पति:
married, of sacrifices The Lord
तुष्टायाम् तोषम्-आपन्न:-
and she being pleased, satisfied he
अजनयत् द्वादश-आत्मजान्
gave birth to twelve sons

The Lord of sacrifices, The Lord married her as she desired and was pleased to do so. He then being satisfied, gave birth to twelve sons.


तोष: प्रतोष: संतोषो भद्र: शान्तिरिडस्पति: ।

इध्म: कविर्विभु: स्वह्न: सुदेवो रोचनो द्विषट् ॥७॥

Tosha, Pratosha, Santosha,
भद्र: शान्ति:-इडस्पति:
Bhadra, Shaanti, Idaspati,
इध्म: कवि:-विभु: स्वह्न:

Sudeva, Rochana, Dvishat

They were, by the names, Tosha, Pratosha, Santosha, Bhadra, Shaanti, Idaspati, Idhma, Kavi, Vibhu, Swahmn, Sudeva, Rochana and Dvishta.


तुषिता नाम ते देवा आसन् स्वायम्भुवान्तरे ।

मरीचिमिश्रा ऋषयो यज्ञ: सुरगणेश्वर: ॥८॥

Tushita named

those (twelve) gods were
स्वायम्भुव-अन्तरे
in Swaayambhuva Manvantara
मरीचि-मिश्रा ऋषय:
Mareechi and other sages
यज्ञ: सुर-गण-ईश्वर:
The Lord Yagya (was) of the gods' group the chief

In Swaayambhuva Manvantara, the twelve sons were gods named as Tushitas, Mareechi and others were the sages, and The Lord of Yagya was the chief of the gods, Indra.


प्रियव्रतोत्तानपादौ मनुपुत्रौ महौजसौ ।

तत्पुत्रपौत्रनप्तृणामनुवृत्तं तदन्तरम् ॥९॥


प्रियव्रत-उत्तानपादौ
Priyavrata Uttaanapaada the two
मनु-पुत्रौ महा-ओजसौ
Manu's sons, (were) very valiant
तत्-पुत्र-पौत्र-नप्तृणाम्-
their sons, grand sons and great grand sons
अनुवृत्तम् तत्-अन्तरम्
and progeny were in that Manvantara

In that Manavantara, there were the two sons of Manu, who were very valiant. Then there were their sons, grand sons and great grand sons, mainly.


देवहूतिमदात्तात कर्दमायात्मजां मनु: ।

तत्सम्बन्धि श्रुतप्रायं भवता गदतो मम ॥१०॥


देवहूतिम्-अदात्-तात
Devahooti gave, O Dear One!
कर्दमाय-आत्मजाम् मनु:
to Kardama, daughter Manu
तत्सम्बन्धि श्रुत-प्रायम्
that related heard almost
भवता गदत: मम
by you, told by me

Manu gave his daughter to Kardama, O Dear Vidura. The story related to that, you have almost heard which was told by me.


दक्षाय ब्रह्मपुत्राय प्रसूतिं भगवान्मनु: ।

प्रायच्छद्यत्कृत: सर्ग: त्रिलोक्याम् विततो महान् ॥११॥


दक्षाय ब्रह्म-पुत्राय
to Daksha, Brahmaa's son
प्रसूतिम् भगवान्-मनु:
Prasooti, Lord Manu
प्रायच्छत्-यत्-कृत: सर्ग:
gave away, whose generated progeny
त्रिलोक्याम् वितत: महान्
in the three worlds is spread vast

Lord Manu, gave away in marriage, Prasooti to Brahmaa's son Daksha. The vast progeny generated by whom, is spread all over the three worlds.


या: कर्दमसुता: प्रोक्ता नव ब्रह्मर्षिपत्नय: ।

तासां प्रसूतिप्रसवं प्रोच्यमानं निबोध मे ॥१२॥


या: कर्दम-सुता: प्रोक्ता:
those Kardama's daughters said about
नव ब्रह्मर्षि-पत्नय:
of the nine Brahmaa's (sons') wives
तासाम् प्रसूति-प्रसवम्
of their borne race
प्रोच्यमानम् निबोध मे
when saying, listen to me

I have told you about the nine daughters of Kardama, who became the wives of the nine sons of Brahmaa. Now I will tell about the race which was boarne off them, listen to me.


पत्नी मरीचेस्तु कला सुषुवे कर्दमात्मजा ।

कश्यपं पूर्णिमानं च ययोरापूरितं जगत् ॥१३॥


पत्नी मरीचे:-तु कला
wife of Mareechi, then Kalaa
सुषुवे कर्दम-आत्मजा
gave birth, Kardama's daughter
कश्यपम् पूर्णिमानम् च
Kashyapa and Poornimaa
ययो:-आपूरितम् जगत्
by whom was filled the world

Kardama's daughter, Kalaa, wife of Mareechi gave birth to two sons, Kashyapa and Poornimaa, by whose progeny the world was full.


पूर्णिमाऽसूत विरजं विश्वगं च परंतप ।

देवकुल्यां हरे: पादशौचाद्याऽभूत्सरिद्दिव: ॥१४॥


पूर्णिमा-असूत विरजम्
Poornimaa begot (two sons) Viraja and
विश्वगम् च परंतप
Vishwaga, and, O austerities observer Vidura!
देवकुल्याम् हरे: पाद-शौचात्-
and Devakulyaa, from Hari's feet washed waters
या-अभूत्-सरित्-दिव:
who became the river divine, Gangaa

Poornimaa begot two sons, Viraja and Vishwaga. His daughter, Devakulyaa, later became the divine river Gangaa, flowing from the waters which washed Shree Hari's feet.


अत्रे: पत्न्यनसूया त्रीञ्जज्ञे सुयशस: सुतान् ।

दत्तं दुर्वाससं सोममात्मेशब्रह्मसम्भवान् ॥१५॥


अत्रे: पत्नी-अनसूया
Atree's wife Anasooyaa
त्रीन्-जज्ञे सुयशस: सुतान्
three gave birth to well renowned sons
दत्तम् दुर्वाससम् सोमम्-
Datta, Durvaasaa, Soma
आत्म-ईश-ब्रह्म-सम्भवान्
of Vishnu, Shiva and Brahmaa part incarnations

Atree's wife Anusooyaa, gave birth to three well renowned sons, named Dattatreya, sage Durvaasaa and Soma, the moon god. They were part incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahmaa.


वदुर उवाच -
Vidura said -
अत्रेर्गृहे सुरश्रेष्ठा: स्थित्युत्पत्त्यन्तहेतव: ।

किञ्चिच्चिकीर्षवो जाता एतदाख्याहि मे गुरो ॥१६॥


अत्रे:-गृहे सुर-श्रेष्ठा:
in Atree's house, the gods foremost
स्थिति-उत्पत्ति-अन्त-हेतव:
of preservation, creation and destruction the cause
किञ्चित्-चिकीर्षव: जाता:
with what desire were born
एतत्-आख्याहि मे गुरो
this (please) say to me O Master

O Master! Please tell me, with what desire did the foremost gods, responsible for the preservation, creation and distruction of the world, take birth in Atree's house.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
ब्रह्मणा नोदित: सृष्टावत्रिर्ब्रह्मविदां वर: ।

सह पत्न्या ययावृक्षं कुलाद्रिं तपसि स्थित: ॥१७॥


ब्रह्मणा नोदित: सृष्टौ-
by Brahmaa instructed in creation,
अत्रि:-ब्रह्म-विदाम् वर:
Atree, of the knowers of Brahman the foremost
सह पत्न्या ययौ-ऋक्षम्
along with wife proceeded to Riksha
कुलाद्रिम् तपसि स्थित:
the ancient mountain ranges, in penance practicing

Instructed by Brahmaa, to bring forth creation, Atree, the foremost of the knowers of Brahman, proceeded with his wife to the ancient mountain ranges, named Riksha, to practice austere penence.


तस्मिन् प्रसूनस्तबकपलाशाशोककानने ।

वार्भि: स्रवद्भिरुदघुष्टे निर्विन्ध्याया: समन्तत: ॥१८॥


तस्मिन् प्रसून-स्तबक-
in that (mountain), with flower clusters
पलाश-अशोक-कानने
of Palaasha, Ashoka forest
वार्भि: स्रवद्भि:-उदघुष्टे
by the waters flowing sound
निर्विन्ध्याया: समन्तत:
of Nirvindhyaa surrounding

On that mountain's forest of Palaasha and Ashoka with bunches of flowers. It was surrounded by the water flowing sound of the waters flowing from the river Nirvindyaa.


प्राणायामेन संयम्य मनो वर्षशतं मुनि: ।

अतिष्ठदेकपादेन निर्द्वन्दोऽनिलभोजन: ॥१९॥


प्राणायामेन संयम्य
by Praanaayam controlling
मन: वर्ष-शतम् मुनि:
the mind, years hundred, the sage
अतिष्ठत्-एक-पादेन
remained by one leg
निर्द्वन्द:-अनिल-भोजन:
unaware of dualities, air subsisting on

The sage, controlled his mind by Praanaayam, and stood on one leg for a hundred years, braving the dualities and subsisting on air.


शरणं तं प्रपद्येऽहं य एव जगदीश्वर: ।

प्रजामात्मसमां मह्यं प्रयच्छत्विति चिन्तयन् ॥२०॥


शरणम् तम् प्रपद्ये-अहम्
protection His, seek I
य: एव जगदीश्वर:
Who alone (is) the world's Lord
प्रजाम्-आत्म-समाम्
off-spring (His) Self like
मह्यम् प्रयच्छतु-
to me may grant
इति चिन्तयन्
this thinking

He was always thinkng that he is seeking His protection Who alone is the Lord of the world, and that may He grant him off-spring like Himself.


तप्यमानं त्रिभुवनं प्राणायामैधसाग्निना ।

निर्गतेन मुनेर्मूर्ध्न: समीक्ष्य प्रभवस्त्रय: ॥२१॥


तप्यमानम् त्रिभुवनम्
scorched the three worlds
प्राणायाम-एधस-अग्निना
by the Praanaayam fuel ignited fire
निर्गतेन मुने:-मूर्ध्न:
emerging from the sage's skull
समीक्ष्य प्रभव:-त्रय:
seeing the Lords three

The three Lords saw that by the fire fuelled by Praanaayaama, emerging from the skull of the sage, the three worlds were scorched.


अप्सरोमुनिगन्धर्वसिद्धविद्याधरोरगै: ।

वितायमानयशसस्तदाश्रमपदं ययु: ॥२२॥


अप्सर:-मुनि-गन्धर्व-
Apsaras, sages, Gandharvas,
सिद्ध-विद्याधर-उरगै:
Siddhas, Vidyaadharas and Naagas
वितायमान-यशस:-
were singing (his) glory
तत्-आश्रम-पदम् ययु:
(they) to his hermitage place went

The three Lords went to his hermitage place, where the Apsaras, sages, Gandharvas, Siddhas, Vidyadharas and Nagas were singing his glory.


तत्प्रादुर्भावसंयोगविद्योतितमना मुनि: ।

उत्तिष्ठन्नेकपादेन ददर्श विबुधर्षभान् ॥२३॥


तत्-प्रादुर्भाव-संयोग-
by their appearance occasion,
विद्योतित-मना: मुनि:
enlightened hearted the sage
उत्तिष्ठन्-एक-पादेन
(though) standing on one foot
ददर्श विबुध-ऋषभान्
saw the foremost gods

By the occasion of their appearance, the heart of the sage was flooded with light, and even though he stood on one leg, he saw the three foremost Lords.


प्रणम्य दण्डवद्भूमावुपतस्थेऽर्हणाञ्जलि: ।

वृषहंससुपर्णस्थान् स्वै: स्वैश्चिह्नैश्चचिह्नितान् ॥२४॥


प्रणम्य दण्डवत्-भूमौ-
greeting (them) by lying prostrate on the ground
उपतस्थे:-अर्हण-अञ्जलि:
worshipped (them) with holy articles in the palms
वृष-हंस-सुपर्ण-स्थान्
on bull, swan, Gaduda seated
स्वै: स्वै:-चिह्नै:-च-
by (their) respective and marks
चिह्नितान्
identified

He lay prostate on the ground and greeted them, and worshipped them with the holy articles that he held in the hollow of his palms. They were seated on the bull, the swan and Gaduda and could be identified by their respective marks.


कृपावलोकेन हसद्वदनेनोपलम्भितान् ।

तद्रोचिषा प्रतिहते निमील्य मुनिरक्षिणी ॥२५॥


कृपा-अवलोकेन हसत्-वदनेन-
by (their) gracious looks, smiling faces
उपलम्भितान् तत्-रोचिषा
exhibited by that splendour
प्रतिहते निमील्य मुनि:-अक्षिणी
dazzled, closed the sage eyes

They exhibited smiling face and gracious looks, by the dazelling splendour of which, made the sage close his eyes.


चेतस्तत्प्रवणं युञ्जन्नस्तावीत्संहताञ्जलि: ।

श्लक्ष्णया सूक्त्या वाचा सर्वलोकगरीयस: ॥२६॥


चेत:-तत्-प्रवणम् युञ्जन्-
conscious his, towards (them) employing
अस्तावीत्-संहत-अञ्जलि:
extolled with joined palms
श्लक्ष्णया सूक्त्या वाचा
with significant sweet words
सर्व-लोक-गरीयस:
in all the worlds the greatest

He employed his conscious towards them, the greatest in the three worlds, and extolled them with joined palms and in significant and sweet words.


अत्रि: उवाच -
Atree said
विश्वोद्भ॒वस्थितिलयेषु विभज्यमानैर्मायागुणैरनुयुगं विगृहीतदेहा: ।

ते ब्रह्मविष्णुगिरिशा: प्रणतोऽस्म्यहं वस्तेभ्य: क एव भवतां म इहोपहूत: ॥ २७॥


विश्व-उद्भ॒व-स्थिति-लयेषु-
in the world's creation, preservation, and destruction
विभज्यमानै:-माया-गुणै:-
dividing by Maayaa' Gunas,
अनुयुगम् विगृहीत-देहा:
in every Kalpa assuming forms
ते ब्रह्म-विष्णु-गिरिशा:
to them, Brahmaa, Vishnu, Shiva
प्रणत:-अस्मि-अहम्
bowed am I
व:-तेभ्य: क: एव
of those who alone
भवताम् मे इह-उपहूत:
of you by me, here is called

I am aware that for the creation, preservation and distruction of the world, in the beginning of every Kalpa, according to the division of the three gunas of Maayaa, you assume forms. I bow to All the three of You. Tell me, which one of you did I pray to, to come here?


एको मयेह भगवान् विबुधप्रधानैश्चित्तीकृत: प्रजननाय कथं नु यूयम् ।

अत्रागतास्तनुभृतां मनसोऽपि दूरात् ब्रूत प्रसीदत महानिह विस्मयो मे ॥२८॥


एक: मया-इह भगवान्
one by me, here Lord
विबुध-प्रधानै: चित्तीकृत:
of the gods the foremost was invoked,
प्रजननाय कथम् नु यूयम्
for creation how come You All
अत्र-आगता:-तनुभृतताम्
here have come, to the human beings
मनस:-अपि दूरात्
mind also far away
ब्रूत प्रसीदत
do say, be pleased
महान्-इह विस्मय: मे
great in this is doubt to me

I had invoked the foremost of the gods, The One Lord for the purpose of creation. How come All of You have come here, because for the human mind this is unconcieveable. I have great doubt in this. Be pleased and pray tell me.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इति तस्य वच: श्रुत्वा त्रयस्ते विबुधर्षभा: ।

प्रत्याहु: श्लक्ष्णया वाचा प्रहस्य तमृषिं प्रभो ॥२९॥


इति तस्य वच: श्रुत्वा
this, his words having heard
त्रय:-ते विबुध-ऋषभा:
three they, the divinities foremost
प्रत्याहु: श्लक्ष्णया वाचा
answered in sweet words
प्रहस्य तम्-ऋषिम् प्रभो
laughingly to that sage, O Vidura!

O worshipful Vidura! Having heard these words, the three foremost divinities, laughingly answered the sage in sweet words.


देवा ऊचु: -
The Deities said -
यथा कृतस्ते सङ्कल्पो भाव्यं तेनैव नान्यथा ।

सत्सङ्कल्पस्य ते ब्रह्मन् यद्वै ध्यायति ते वयम् ॥३०॥


यथा कृत:-ते सङ्कल्प:
as have resolved your decision
भाव्यम् तेन-एव
will surely happen that like only
न-अन्यथा सत्-सङ्कल्पस्य
not otherwise true resolves
ते ब्रह्मन् यत्-वै
are yours O Brahman! on Whom
ध्यायति ते वयम्
indeed (you) meditate, they we are

O Brahman! Your resolves are true. As you have resolved, and decided, it will happen like that only and not otherwise. The One you meditated upon we three are that only.


अथास्मदंशभूतास्ते आत्मजा लोकविश्रुता: ।

भवितारोऽङ्गभद्रं ते विस्रप्स्यन्ति च ते यश: ॥३१॥


अथ-अस्मत्-अंश-भूता:-
now, from our parts born
ते आत्मजा: लोक-विश्रुता:
your sons, in the world well known
भवितार:-अङ्ग-भद्रम् ते
will be, O Dear! May you be blessed
विस्रप्स्यन्ति च ते यश:
will spread and your fame

O Dear! May you be blessed! Now the sons born to you will have our parts. They will be well known in the world and will also spread your fame.


एवं कामवरं दत्त्वा प्रतिजग्मु: सुरेश्वरा: ।

सभाजितास्तयो: सम्यग्दम्पत्योर्मिषतोस्तत: ॥३२॥


एवम् काम-वरम् दत्त्वा
like this, desired boon gave
प्रतिजग्मु: सुरेश्वरा:
returned the Deities
सभाजिता:-तयो: सम्यक्-
worshipped by them well,
दम्पत्यो: मिषतो:-तत:
by the couple looked on from there

Thus, granting their desired boon, The Deities returned from there, after being well worshiped by them and even as the couple looked on.


सोमो अभूद्ब्रह्मणोंऽशेन दत्तो विष्णोस्तु योगवित् ।

दुर्वासा: शंकरस्यांशो निबोधाङ्गिरस: प्रजा: ॥३३॥


सोम: अभूत्-ब्रह्मण:-अंशेन
moon was born of Brahma's portion
दत्त: विष्णो:-तु योगवित्
Dattatreya of Vishnu, indeed the yoga Master
दुर्वासा: शंकरस्य-अंश:
Durvaasaa was Shiva's portion
निबोध-अङ्गिरस: प्रजा:
listen (about) Angirasa's progeny

The Moon god was born of a portion of Brahmaa, Dattaatreya, indeed was born of a portion of Vishnu, The Master of Yoga, and Durvaasaa was born of a portion of Shankara. Now listen about the progeny of sage Angirasa.


श्रद्धा त्वङ्गिरस: पत्नी चतस्रोऽसूत् कन्यका: ।

सिनीवाली कुहू राका चतुर्थ्यनुमतिस्तथा ॥३४॥


श्रद्धा तु-
Shraddhaa, indeed
अङ्गिरस: पत्नी
Angirasa's wife
चतस्र:-असूत् कन्यका:
four gave birth to daughters
सिनीवाली कुहू राका
Sineevaalee, Kuhu, Raakaa
चतुर्थी-अनुमति:तथा
fourth Anumati and

Angirasa'as wife, indeed gave birth to four daughters, namely Sineevaalee, Kuhu, Raakaa, and the fourth Anumati.


तत्पुत्रावपरावास्तां ख्यातौ स्वरोचिषेऽन्तरे ।

उतथ्यो भगवान् साक्षाद्ब्रह्मिष्ठश्च बृहस्पति: ॥३५॥


तत्-पुत्रौ-अपरौ-आस्ताम्
his two sons, besides were
ख्यातौ स्वरोचिषे-अन्तरे
well known in Svarochisha Manvantara
उतथ्य: भगवान् साक्षात्-
Utathya (was) god personified
ब्रह्मिष्ठ:-च बृहस्पति:
the knower of Brahma, and Brihaspati

Besides the daughters, he had two sons who were well known in the Svarochisha Manvantara. Utathya was god personified and Brihaspati was the Knower of Brahman.


पुलस्त्योऽजनयत्पत्न्यामगस्त्यं च हविर्भुवि ।

सोऽन्यजन्मनि दह्राग्निर्विश्रवाश्च महातपा: ॥३६॥


पुलस्त्य-अजनयत्-
Pulastya gave birth
पत्न्याम्-
from wife
अगस्त्यम् च हविर्भुवि
to Agastya, (wife) Havirbhoo
स:-अन्य-जन्मनि
he in another birth
दह्राग्नि:-
was gastro fire
विश्रवा:-च महातपा:
Vishravaa and was a great ascetic

Pulastya from his wife Havirbhoo begot two sons. Agastya, who in another birth became the gastral fire and Vishravaa was a great ascetic.


तस्य यक्षपतिर्देव कुबेरस्त्विडविडासुत: ।

रावण: कुम्भकर्णश्च तथान्यस्यां विभीषण: ॥३७॥

Vishwashrava's son, the lord of the Yakshas, the celebrated Kuber was born from his wife Idavidaa. From his second wife were born Raavana, Kumbhakarna and Vibheeshana.


पुलहस्य गतिर्भार्या त्रीनसूत सती सुतान् ।

कर्मश्रेष्ठं वरीयांसं सहिष्णुं च महामते ॥३८॥


पुलहस्य गति:-भार्या
Pulaha's, Gati, the wife
त्रीन्-असूत सती सुतान्
three gave birth to, the noble lady, sons
कर्मश्रेष्ठम् वरीयांसम्
Karmashreshtha, Vareeyaan
सहिष्णुम् च महामते
and Sahishnu, O Wise Vidura!

O Wise Vidura! Pulaha's wife Gati, the noble lady, gave birth to three sons, Karmashreshtha, Vareeyaan and Sahishnu.


क्रतोरपि क्रिया भार्या वालखिल्यानसूयत ।

ऋषीन् षष्टिसहस्राणि ज्वलतो ब्रह्मतेजसा ॥३९॥


क्रतो:-अपि क्रिया भार्या
of Kratu, also, Kriyaa, the wife
वालखिल्यान्-असूयत
The Baalakhilyaas, boar
ऋषीन् षष्टि-सहस्राणि
the sages, sixty thousand
ज्वलत: ब्रह्म-तेजसा
burning (with) Brahmanic glow

Even Kratu's wife, Kriyaa gave birth to the sixty-thousand Baalakhilyas, the sages, who were burning with spiritual glow.


ऊर्जायां जज्ञिरे पुत्रा वशिष्ठस्य परन्तप ।

चित्रकेतुप्रधानास्ते सप्त ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमला: ॥४०॥


ऊर्जायाम् जज्ञिरे पुत्रा:
from Oorjaa, were born sons
वशिष्ठस्य परन्तप:
of Vashishtha, O Valiant One!
चित्रकेतु-प्रधाना:-ते सप्त
Chitraketu, mainly, they seven
ब्रह्मर्षय:-अमला:
were Braahmana sages pure

O Valiant Vidura! To Vashishtha, from his wife Oorjaa, were born seven sons, Chitraketu being the main. All of them were pure Braahmana sages.


चित्रकेतु सुरोचिश्च विरजा मित्र एव च ।

उल्बणो वसुभृद्यानो द्युमान् शक्त्यादयोऽपरे ॥४१॥


चित्रकेतु: सुरोचि:-च
Chitraketu, Surochi, and
विरजा: मित्र: एव च
Virajaa, Mitra also and
उल्बण: वसुभृद्यान:
Ulbana, Vasubhridyaana,
द्युमान् शक्ति-आदय:-अपरे
Dyumaana, Shakti and others from another (wife)

They were, Chitraketu, Surochi, Virajaa, Mitra, Ulbana, Vasubhridyaana and Dyumaana. Shakti and others were born from another wife.


चित्तिस्त्वथर्वण: पत्नी लेभे पुत्रं धृतव्रतम् ।

दध्यञ्चमश्वशिरसम् भृगोर्वंशम् निबोध मे ॥४२॥


चित्ति:-तु-अथर्वण: पत्नी
Chitti, indeed, Atharva's wife
लेभे पुत्रम् धृतव्रतम्
got a son, (who had) taken vow (of penance)
दध्यञ्चम्-अश्वशिरसम्
Dadheechee, (known also as) Ashwashiras
भृगो:-वंशम् निबोध मे
of Bhrigu's race, hear from me

Atharva's wife Chitti had got a son, who had taken a vow of penance, named Dadheechee. He was also known as Ashvashiras. Now hear from me, of the race of Bhrigu.



भृगु: ख्यात्यां महाभाग: पत्न्यां पुत्रानजीजनत् ।

धातारं च विधातारं श्रियं च भगवत्पराम् ॥४३॥


भृगु: ख्यात्याम् महाभाग:
Bhrigu through Khyaatee, the blessed,
पत्न्याम् पुत्रान्-अजीजनत्
wife, sons produced
धातारम् च विधातारम्
Dhaataa and Vidhaataa
श्रियम् च भगवत्-पराम्
and Shri, Lord's devotee

The blessed sage Bhrigu, through his wife Khyaatee, produced two sons, Dhaataa and Vidhaataa, and a daughter Shree, devoted to The Lord.


आयतिं नियतिं चैव सूते मेरुस्तयोरदात् ।

ताभ्यां तयोरभवतां मृकण्ड: प्राण एव च ॥४४॥


आयतिम् नियतिम् च-एव
Aayati, Niyati and also
सूते मेरु:-तयो:-अदात्
daughters, Meru to them gave
ताभ्याम् तयो:-अभवताम्
from them, to both of them (Dhaata, Vidhata)
मृकण्ड: प्राण: एव च
were born, Mrikanda, Praana also and

Meru gave his two daughters, Aayati and Niyati to them, Dhaataa and Vidhaataa. From them were born Mrikand and Praana to both of them.


मार्कण्डेयो मृकण्डस्य प्राणाद्वेद शिरामुनि: ।

कविश्च भार्गवो यस्य भगवानुशना सुत: ॥४५॥


मार्कण्डेय: मृकण्डस्य
Maarkandeya, of Mrikanda
प्राणात्-वेद शिरा-मुनि:
from Praana Ved-Shiraa the sage
कवि:-च भार्गव: यस्य
Kavi and of Bhrigu, whose
भगवान्-उशना सुत:
Bhagavaan Ushanaa is the son

Maarkandeya was the son of Mrikanda, and from Praana the sage Ved-Shiraa was born. Kavi was the son of Bhrigu, whose son was Bhagavaan Ushanaa (Shukraachaarya).


त एते मुनय: क्षत्तर्लोकान्सर्गैरभावयन् ।

एष कर्दमदौहित्रसंतान: कथितस्तव ।

शृण्वत: श्रद्दधानस्य सद्य: पापहर: पर: ॥४६॥


ते एते मुनय: क्षत्त:-
those, these sages, O Vidura!
लोकान्-सर्गै:-अभावयन्
the worlds by progeny spreading
एष: कर्दम-दौहित्र-
this Kardama's grandsons'
संतान: कथित:-तव
children, told to you
शृण्वत: श्रद्दधानस्य
hearing reverently
सद्य: पाप-हर: पर:
soon sins dissolves best

O Vidura! These are those sages, who spread their progeny in the world. I have told you about the children of Kardama's grandchildren. His sins are best and soon dissolved, who hears this description with reverence.


प्रसूतिं मानवीं दक्ष उपयेमे ह्यजात्मज: ।

तस्यां ससर्ज दुहितृ: षोडशामललोचना: ॥४७॥


प्रसूतिम् मानवीम् दक्ष
Prasooti, Manu's daughter, Daksha
उपयेमे हि-अज-आत्मज:
married indeed, Brahmaa's son
तस्याम् ससर्ज दुहितृ:
from her (he) created daughters
षोडश-अमल-लोचना:
sixteen, beautiful eyed

Brahma's son Daksha married Manu's daughter Prasooti, from her, he created sixteen beautiful eyed daughters.


त्रयोदशादाद्धर्माय तथैकामग्नये विभु: ।

पितृभ्य एकाम् युक्तेभ्यो भवायैकां भवच्छिदे ॥४८॥


त्रयोदश-अदात्- धर्माय
thirteen gave to Dharma
तथा-एकाम्-अग्नये विभु:
and one to Fire, the lord (Daksha)
पितृभ्य: एकाम् युक्तेभ्य:
to the Pitris one, combined
भवाय-एकाम् भवच्छिदे
to Shiva one, the world destroyer

The lord Daksha gave thirteen of his daughters to Dharma, one to Fire, one to all the Pitris combined, and one to Shiva, the lord of world distruction.


श्रद्धा मैत्री दया शान्तिस्तुष्टि: पुष्टि: क्रियोन्नति: ।

बुद्धिर्मेधा तितिक्षा ह्रीर्मूर्तिर्धर्मस्य पत्नय: ॥४९॥


श्रद्धा मैत्री दया शान्ति:-
Shraddhaa, Maitree, Dayaa, Shaanti,
तुष्टि: पुष्टि: क्रिया-उन्नति:
Tushti, Pushti, Kriyaa, Unnati,
बुद्धि:-मेधा तितिक्षा
Buddhi, Medhaa, Titeekshaa,
ह्री:-मूर्ति:-धर्मस्य पत्नय:
Hree, Moorti, (are) Dharma's wives

Dharma's wives are Shraddhaa, Maitree, Dayaa, Shaanti, Tushti, Pushti, Kriyaa, Unnati, Buddhi, Medhaa, Titeekshaa, Hree, and Moorti.


श्रद्धासूत शुभं मैत्री प्रसादमभयं दया ।

शान्ति: सुखं मुदं तुष्टि: स्मयं पुष्टिरसूयत ॥५०॥


श्रद्धा-असूत शुभम्
Shraddhaa bore Shubha,
मैत्री प्रसादम्-
Maitree (gave birth to) Prasaada,
अभयम् दया
Abhaya to Dayaa,
शान्ति: सुखम्
Shaanti (bore) Sukha

Smaya to Pushti was born

Shraddhaa bore Shubha, Maitree gave birth to Prasaada, Abhaya was born to Dayaa, Shaanti bore Sukha, Muda was born to Tushti, and Smaya was born to Pushti.


योगं क्रियोन्नतिर्दर्पमर्थं बुद्धिरसूयत ।

मेधा स्मृतिं तितिक्षा तु क्षेमं ह्री: प्रश्रयं सुतम् ॥५१॥


योगम् क्रिया-उन्नति:-दर्पम्-
Yoga (was born to) Kriyaa, Unnati (bore) Darpa
अर्थम् बुद्धि:-असूयत
Artha, Buddhi gave birth to
मेधा स्मृतिम्
Medhaa (bore) Smriti
तितिक्षा तु क्षेमम्
Titeekshaa, indeed (bore) Kshema
ह्री: प्रश्रयम् सुतम्
Hree (bore) Prashraya (the son)

Yoga was born to Kriyaa, Unnati bore Darpa, Buddhi gave birth to Artha, Medhaa bore Smriti, Titeekshaa, indeed, bore Kshema, and Hree gave birth to son Prashraya.


मूर्ति: सर्वगुणोत्पत्तिर्नरनारायणावृषी ॥५२॥


मूर्ति: सर्व-गुण-उत्पत्ति:-
Moorti, of all virtues the mine
नर-नारायणौ-ऋषी
to Nara Naaraayana sages

The mine of all virtues, Moorti, gave birth to the two divine sages Nara and Naaraayana.


ययोर्जन्मन्यदो विश्वमभ्यनन्दत्सुनिर्वृतम् ।

मनांसि ककुभो वाता: प्रसेदु: सरितोऽद्रय: ॥५३॥


ययो:-जन्मनि-अद: विश्वम्-
on whose birth, the whole world
अभ्यनन्दत्-सुनिर्वृतम्
rejoiced, highly pleased
मनांसि ककुभ: वाता:
the minds (of people), the directions, winds
प्रसेदु: सरित:-अद्रय:
were happy, rivers and mountains

On whose birth, the whole world was highly pleased and the minds of the people, the four directions the winds, rivers and mountains were all pleased.


दिव्यवाद्यन्त तूर्याणि पेतु: कुसुमवृष्टय: ।

मुनयस्तुष्टुवुस्तुष्टा जगुर्गन्धर्वकिन्नरा: ॥५४॥


दिवि-अवाद्यन्त तूर्याणि
in the heaven blew trumpets
पेतु: कुसुम-वृष्टय:
showered flower rains
मुनय:-तुष्टुवु:-तुष्टा:
sages praised gratified
जगु:-गन्धर्व-किन्नरा:
sang Gandharvas and Kinnaras

In the heaven, trumpets were blown, flower rains were showered, gratified sages offered praises, and the Gandharvas and Kinneras sang.


नृत्यन्ति स्म स्त्रियो देव्य आसीत्परममङ्गलम् ।

देवा ब्रह्मादय: सर्वे उपतस्थुरभिष्टवै: ॥५५॥


नृत्यन्ति स्म स्त्रिय: देव्य:
were dancing women of heaven
आसीत्-परम-मङ्गलम्
prevailed great joy
देवा: ब्रह्मा-आदय: सर्वे
the gods, Brahmaa and all
उपतस्थु:-अभिष्टवै:
waited singing hymns

The women of the heaven were dancing, great joy and felicity prevailed,a Brahmaa and other gods waited and sang hymns.


यो मायया विरचितं निजयाऽऽत्मनीदं खे रूपभेदमिव तत्प्रतिचक्षणाय ।

एतेन धर्मसदने ऋषिमूर्तिनाद्य प्रादुश्चकार पुरुषाय नम: परस्मै ॥५६॥


य: मायया विरचितम्
Who by Maayaa created
निजया-आत्मनि-इदम्
in (His) Own Self this
खे रूप-भेदम्-इव
the sky's forms different like
तत्-प्रतिचक्षणाय
that to reveal
एतेन धर्मसदने ऋषि-
by this, in Dharma's house, by Sage
मूर्तिना-अद्य प्रादुश्चकार
form today, has manifested
पुरुषाय नम: परस्मै
(to that) Person obeisance Supreme

Our obeisance to The Supreme Person, Who reveals in His Own Self, the different forms created by His Own Maayaa, like the different forms that take shape in the sky, He has manifested in the house of Dharma today.


सोऽयं स्थितिव्यतिकरोपशमाय सृष्टान् सत्त्वेन न: सुरगणाननुमेयतत्त्व: ।

दृश्याददभ्रकरुणेन विलोकनेन यच्छ्रीनिकेतममलं क्षिपतारविन्दम् ॥५७॥


स:-अयम् स्थिति-व्यतिकर-
That This, in existence disturbance
उपशमाय सृष्टान् सत्त्वेन
to eradicate, created by Sattva
न: सुरगणान्-अनुमेय-तत्त्व:
us the gods, (Whose) inferred (is) true nature
दृश्यात्-अदभ्र-करुणेन
look with plentiful compassionate
विलोकनेन यत्-श्री-निकेतम्-
looks, Who is beauty abode
अमलम् क्षिपता-अरविन्दम्
pure, out-shining the lotus

May That This, Who is the abode of pure beauty, which outshines the beauty of the lotus, May look on us, with plentiful compassionate eyes. He, Whose true nature can only be inffered, created us, the gods, by Sattva, to eradicate disturbances occuring in the existence.


एवं सुरगणैस्तात भगवन्तावभिष्टुतौ ।

लब्धावलोकैर्ययतुर्चितौ गन्धमादनम् ॥५८॥


एवम् सुरगणै:-तात
thus by the gods, O Dear One!
भगवन्तौ-अभिष्टुतौ
the two Lords', praises sung
लब्ध-अवलोकै:-ययतु:-
(who had) blessed by (Their) sight, went away
अर्चितौ गन्धमादनम्
worshipped, to Gandhamaadana mountain

Thus, O Dear One! both the Lords Who were extolled and worshipped by the gods who were blessed by Their sight, went away to the Gandhamaadana mountains.


ताविमौ वै भगवतो हरेरंशाविहागतौ ।

भारव्ययाय च भुव: कृष्णौ यदुकुरूद्वहौ ॥५९॥


तौ-इमौ वै भगवत:
They Two These, indeed Lord
हरे:-अंशौ-इह-आगतौ
Shree Hari's parts, here have come
भार-व्ययाय च भुव:
to the burden relieve and of the world
कृष्णौ यदु-कुरु-उद्वहौ
The (two) Krishnas, Yadu and Kuru up lifters

These Two, the part incarnation of Lord Hari, have come here to relieve the burden of the world, as the two Krishnas, the uplifters of Yadus and Kurus.


स्वाहाभिमानिनश्चाग्नेरात्मजांस्त्रीनजीजनत् ।

पावकं पवमानं च शुचिं च हुतभोजनम् ॥६०॥


स्वाहा-अभिमानिन:-च-अग्ने:-
Swaahaa (wife of), the righteous and fire
आत्मजान्-त्रीन्-अजीजनत्
sons three gave birth to
पावकम् पवमानम् च
Paavaka, Pavamaana, and
शुचिम् च हुत-भोजनम्
Shuchi, and (their) sacrificial offerings is food

The righteous fire god's wife, Swaahaa, gave birth to three sons, namely, Paavaka, Pavamaana, and Shuchi. Their food is the offerings in the sacrifices.


तेभ्योऽग्नय: समभवन् चत्वारिंशच्च पञ्च च ।

त एवैकोनपञ्चाशत्साकं पितृपितामहै: ॥६१॥


तेभ्य:-अग्नय: समभवन्
from them (three) fires emerged
चत्वारिंशत्-च पञ्च च
forty and five and
ते एव-एकोनपञ्चाशत्-
they alone forty nine (were known)
साकं पितृ-पितामहै:
along with fathers and grandfather

From the three of them emerged forty-five fires. They along with their three fathers and grand father were known as the forty-nine fires.


वैतानिके कर्मणि यन्नामभिर्ब्रह्मवादिभि: ।

आग्नेय्य इष्टयो यज्ञे निरूप्यन्तेऽग्नयस्तु ते ॥६२॥


वैतानिके कर्मणि

These forty nine fires are those fires, in whose names, the Ishtis (the sacrificial materials) are performed in the yagya sacrifices, for the fire gods, by the sages who have the knowledge of Brahman.


अग्निष्वात्ता बर्हिषद: सौम्या: पितर आज्यपा: ।

साग्नयऽनग्नयस्तेषां पत्नी दाक्षायणी स्वधा ॥६३॥


अग्निष्वात्ता: बर्हिषद:
Agnishwaattaa Barhishads
सौम्या: पितर: आज्यपा:
Saumyaas, the Pitris, Aajyapaas
साग्नय:-अनग्नय:-
(they are) Sagnikas or Anagnikas
तेषाम् पत्नी दाक्षायणी स्वधा
their wife is Daksha's daughter Swadhaa

The Pitris are, Agnishwattas, Barhishads, Saumyas, and Asjyapas, they are either Saagnikas, or Niraagnikas. Their wife was indeed Daksha's daughter, Swadhaa'. (The Pitris are four, namely, Agnishwattaa, Barhishads, Saumyas and Aajyapas. They are either Sagnikas o rNiragnikas. was indeed Daksha's daughter, Swadhaa', is common to all of them).


तेभ्यो दधार कन्ये द्वे वयुनां धारिणीं स्वधा ।

उभे ते ब्रह्मवादिन्यौ ज्ञान विज्ञानपारगे ॥६४॥


तेभ्य: दधार कन्ये द्वे
from them bore, daughters two
वयुनाम् धारिणीम् स्वधा
Vayunaa and Dhaarini, Swadhaa
उभे ते ब्रह्मवादिन्यौ
both of them (were) taught Brahman knowledge
ज्ञान विज्ञानपारगे
in (spiritual) knowledge and (spiritual) science being experts

Swadhaa, through them bore two daughter, Vayunaa and Dhaarini. Both of them were experts in spiritual knowledge and spiritual science, and taught Brhaman knowledge.


भवस्य पत्नी तु सती भवं देवमनुव्रता ।

आत्मन: सदृशं पुत्रं न लेभे गुणशीलत: ॥६५॥


भवस्य पत्नी तु सती
Bhava's (Shiva's) wife, indeed Satee
भवम् देवम्-अनुव्रता
to Bhava Lord dedicated
आत्मन: सदृशम् पुत्रम्
herself like son
न लेभे गुण-शीलत:
did not get, in virtues and nature

Lord Bhava's wife, Satee, who was dedicated to Bhava, (Shiva), did not get a son like herself in virtues and character.


पितर्यप्रतिरूपे स्वे भवायानागसे रुषा ।

अप्रौढैवात्मनाऽऽत्मानमजहाद्योगसंयुता ॥६६॥


पितरि-अप्रतिरूपे स्वे भवाय-
father being against, to own Bhava
अनागसे रुषा अप्रौढा-एव-
unreasonably angry, while young only
आत्मना-आत्मानम्-
by herself, herself
अजहात्-योग-संयुता
gave up by yoga's help

On account of her father being angry without reason with Shiva and so being against him, she gave up her body with the help of yoga, though she was still very young.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे विदुरमैत्रेयसंवादे प्रथम: अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥१॥


Thus ends the first discourse, forming part of the Dialogue between Vidura and Maitreya, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
