विदुर उवाच -
Vidura said -
भवे शीलवतां श्रेष्ठे दक्षो दुहितृवत्सल: ।

विद्वेषमकरोत्कस्मादनादृत्यात्मजां सतीम् ॥१॥


भवे शीलवताम् श्रेष्ठे
towards Bhava, of the respected the highest
दक्ष: दुहितृ-वत्सल:
Daksha, of daughter fond
विद्वेषम्-अकरोत्-कस्मात्-
animosity did, how,
अनादृत्य-आत्मजाम् सतीम्
disregarding own daughter Satee

Daksha, who was so fond of his daughters, how come he developed enimosity towards Bhava, who is the highest of the respected, disregarding his own daughter Satee


कस्तं चराचरगुरुं निर्वैरं शान्तविग्रहं ।

आत्मारामं कथं द्वेष्टि जगतो दैवतं महत् ॥२॥


क:-तम् चर-अचर-गुरुम्
who Him, of animate and inanimate the teacher
निर्वैरम् शान्त-विग्रहम्
enemy-less, of peaceful personality
आत्मारामम् कथम् द्वेष्टि
in Self revelling, how holds grudge
जगत: दैवतम् महत्
of the creation venerated most

How can any one hold a grudge against Him Who is the master of the animate and inanimate creation, Who has no enemies, Who has a peaceful personality, Who revells in His own Self, and Who is the most venerated in the whole creation.


एतदाख्याहि मे ब्रह्मन् जामातु: श्वशुरस्य च ।

विद्वेषस्तु यत: प्राणांस्तत्यजे दुस्त्यजान्सती ॥३॥


एतत्-आख्याहि मे ब्रह्मन्
this, do tell to me, O Holy sage!
जामातु: श्वशुरस्य च
of the son-in-law and father-in-law's
विद्वेष:-तु यत:
difference indeed, because of which,
प्राणान्-तत्यजे दुस्त्यजान्-सती
life gave up, difficult to give up, Satee

O Holy sage! Do tell me about the cause of the differences between the son-in-law and the father-in-law, because of which Satee gave up her life, which is so difficult to give up.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
पुरा विश्वसृजां सत्रे समेता: परमर्षय: ।

तथामरगणा: सर्वे सानुगा मुनयोऽग्नय: ॥४॥


पुरा विश्वसृजाम् सत्रे
long back, in the Prajaapatis' (sacrificial) meeting
समेता: परमर्षय:
gathered leading sages
तथा-अमर-गणा: सर्वे
and the gods groups all
स-अनुगा: मुनय:-अग्नय:
with attendants, fire and seers

Long back, for a scrificial meeting of the Prajaapatis', the lords of created beings, the foremost sages and seers, hoasts of other gods and the fire god, gathered with their attendents.


तत्र प्रविष्टमृषयो दृष्ट्वार्कमिव रोचिषा ।

भ्राजमानं वितिमिरं कुर्वन्तं तन्महत्सद: ॥५॥


तत्र प्रविष्टम्-ऋषय:
there entering (him), the sages,
दृष्ट्वा-अर्कम्-इव रोचिषा
saw sun like by lustre
भ्राजमानम् वितिमिरम्
shining, without darkness
कुर्वन्तम् तत्-महत्-सद:
rendering that grand assembly

As Daksha entered, the sages saw that it was as if the sun was entering, with own shine, dispelling all darkness and was illuminating the grand assembly by his lustre.


उदतिष्ठन् सदस्यास्ते स्वधिष्ण्येभ्य: सहाग्नय: ।

ऋते विरिञ्चं शर्वं च तद्भासाऽऽक्षिप्तचेतस: ॥६॥


उदतिष्ठन् सदस्या:-ते
stood members they
स्व-धिष्ण्येभ्य: सह-अग्नय:
(from) own seats, along with Fire
ऋते विरिञ्चम् शर्वम् च
except Brahmaa and Shiva
तत्-भासा-आक्षिप्त-चेतस:
by his (Daksha's) brilliance, bewilder minded

As Daksha entered, their minds bewildered by his brilliance, all the members, including the fire gods, rose from their seats, except Brahmaa and Shiva.


सदसस्पतिभिर्दक्षो भगवान् साधु सत्कृत: ।

अजं लोकगुरुं नत्वा निषसाद तदाज्ञया ॥७॥


सदस:-पतिभि:-दक्ष:
by assembly priests Daksha
भगवान् साधु सत्कृत:
the honourable, well honoured
अजम् लोक-गुरुम् नत्वा
to Brahmaa, the world's master, bowed
निषसाद तत्-आज्ञया
sat down by his permission

The honourable Daksha was well honoured by the assembly priests. He, then bowed to Brahmaa, the world's master and sat down after taking his permission.


प्राङ्निषण्णं मृडं दृष्ट्वा नामृष्यत्तदनादृत: ।

उवाच वामं चक्षुर्भ्यामभिवीक्ष्य दहन्निव ॥८॥


प्राक्-निषण्णम् मृडम् दृष्ट्वा
already seated Shiva seeing
न-अमृष्यत्-तत्-अनादृत:
did not tolerate by him dishonoured
उवाच वामम् चक्षुर्भ्याम्-
said to Shiva with eyes
अभिवीक्ष्य दहन्-इव
looking, burning as if

He saw that Shiva was already seated and could not tolerate his not honouring him. Looking with burning eyes, he said to Shiva.


श्रूयतां ब्रह्मर्षयो मे सहदेवा: सहाग्नय: ।

साधूनां ब्रूवतो वृत्तं नाज्ञानान्न मत्सरात् ॥९॥


श्रूयताम् ब्रह्मर्षय: मे
do listen O Holy sages! to my words
सह-देवा: सह-अग्नय:
all the gods with the fire gods
साधूनाम् ब्रूवत: वृत्तम्
of the pious souls, as I say, conduct
न-अज्ञानात्-न मत्सरात्
not from ignorance, not from spite

O Holy sages, gods and fire gods! Do listen to my words. As I describe the conduct of pious souls, not with ignorance and not by spite.


अयं तु लोकपालानां यशोघ्नो निरपत्रप: ।

सद्भिराचरित: पन्था येन स्तब्धेन दूषित: ॥१०॥


अयम् तु लोकपालानाम्
this indeed, of the Prajaapatis'
यश:-घ्न: निरपत्रप:
fame wrecked, shameless
सद्भि:-आचरित: पन्था:
by the noble treaded paths
येन स्तब्धेन दूषित:
by whom arrogant, are maliced

This shameless and arrogant fellow has maligned the path trodden by the noble Prajaapatis and has wrecked their fame.


एष मे शिष्यतां प्राप्तो यन्मे दुहितुरग्रहीत् ।

पाणिं विप्राग्निमुखत: सावित्र्या इव साधुवत् ॥११॥


एष: मे शिष्यताम् प्राप्त:
this my son like (status) attained
यत्-मे दुहितु:-अग्रहीत्
because my daughter's held
पाणिम् विप्र-अग्नि-मुखत:
hand, Braahmanas (and) fire in front of
सावित्र्या: इव साधु-वत्
like Saavitri, a gentleman like

He is almost like a son to me, because like a noble person.he held the hand of my daughter, who is like Saavitri, in the front of the Braahmanas and the fire.


गृहीत्वा मृगशावाक्ष्या: पाणिं मर्कटलोचन: ।

प्रत्युथानाभिवादार्हे वाचाप्यकृत नोचितम् ॥१२॥


गृहीत्वा मृग-शाव-आक्ष्या:
taking fawn eyed (daughter's)
पाणिम् मर्कट-लोचन:
hand, (this) monkey eyed
प्रत्युथान-अभिवाद-अर्हे
rising and greeting requiring
वाचा-अपि-अकृत न-उचितम्
by words also did not do, is not proper

This monkey eyed took the hand of my fawn eyed daughter. Though it was requiered of him to rise and greet me, by words also he did not do what was requiered of him. This is not proper.


लुप्तक्रियायाशुचये मानिने भिन्नसेतवे ।

अनिच्छन्नप्यदां बालां शूद्रायेवोशतीं गिरम् ॥१३॥


लुप्त-क्रियाय-अशुचये
without (pious) acts, impure (and)
मानिने भिन्न-सेतवे
arrogant, ignoring proprieties
अनिच्छन्-अपि-अदाम् बालाम्
unwilling also, gave the girl
शूद्राय-इव-उशतीम् गिरम्
to a Shudra like Veda's sayings

To this impure and arrogant person, who has given up all pious acts and who ignores all proprieties, I gave away the girl, unwillingly, just as one would give the sayings of the Vedas to a Shudra.


प्रेतावासेषु घोरेषु प्रेतैर्भूतगणैर्वृत: ।

अटत्युन्मत्तवन्नग्नो व्युप्तकेशो हसन् रुदन् ॥१४॥


प्रेत-आवासेषु घोरेषु
in spirit habitats fierce
प्रेतै:-भूत-गणै:-वृत:
by spirits and ghosts' troops surrounded
अटति-उन्मत्त-वत्-नग्न:
roams possessed as if, naked,
व्युप्त-केश: हसन् रुदन्
dishevelled haired, now laughing, now crying

He roams about in fierce crematories habited by spirits, like a possessed person, naked and disshevelled haired, surrounded by troops of ghosts and spirits, now laughing and now crying.


चिताभस्मकृतस्नान: प्रेतस्रङ्न्रस्थिभूषण: ।

शिवापदेशो ह्यशिवो मत्तो मत्तजनप्रिय: ।

पति: प्रमथभूतानां तमोमात्रात्मकात्मनाम् ॥१५॥


चिता-भस्म-कृत-स्नान:
funeral ashes did bathed in
प्रेत-स्रक्-नृ-अस्थि-भूषण:
spirit (like) garland (of skulls), human bones ornamented
शिव-अपदेश: हि-अशिव:
Shiva named, indeed inauspicious,
मत्त: मत्त-जन-प्रिय:
drunk, drunk people's dear
पति: प्रमथ-भूतानाम्
lord of goblins and ghosts
तम:-मात्र-आत्मक-आत्मनाम्
Taamasic only natured people

He is bathed in the ashes of the funeral pier, and adorns himself with the garland of skulls like the spirits, and wears ornaments of human bones. His name is Shiva but he is really inauspicious. He is drunk and is liked by drunk people. He is the lord of goblins and ghosts and people of utmost Tamasic nature.


तस्मा उन्मादनाथाय नष्टशौचाय दुर्हृदे ।

दत्ता बत मया साध्वी चोदिते परमेष्ठिना ॥१६॥


तस्मै उन्माद-नाथाय
to him the ghosts' lord
नष्ट-शौचाय दुर्हृदे
devoid of purities, to the evil soul
दत्ता बत मया साध्वी
given alas by me, the virtuous girl
चोदिते परमेष्ठिना
prodded by Brahmaa

Alas! Proded by Brahmaa, the virtuous girl was given by me to him, an evil soul, the lord of the ghosts, devoid of all purities.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
विनिन्द्यैवं स गिरिशमप्रतीपमवस्थितम् ।

दक्षोऽथाप उपस्पृश्य क्रुद्ध: शप्तुं प्रचक्रमे ॥१७॥


विनिन्द्य-एवम् स: गिरिशम्-
abusing thus he, The mountain Lord Shiva
अप्रतीपम्-अवस्थितम्
unravelling seated
दक्ष:-अथ-आप उपस्पृश्य
Daksha then water touched
क्रुद्ध: शप्तुम् प्रचक्रमे
angrily to curse was ready

Daksha thus abused the mountain Lord Shiva, who sat there unrevolting. Daksha, then in anger, touched water and was ready to curse Shiva.


अयं तु देवयजन इन्द्रोपेन्द्रादिभिर्भव: ।

सह भागं न लभतां देवैर्देवगणाधम: ॥१८॥


अयम् तु देव-यजने
this (he) indeed, in the gods' sacrifice
इन्द्र्-उपेन्द्र-आदिभि:-भव:
with Indra and Upendra and others, Bhava (Shiva)
सह भागम् न लभताम्
with portion will not get
देवै:-देव-गण-अधम:
with the gods, of the hosts of gods most lowly

This, he, Shiva, indeed the most lowly of the hoasts of gods, may not get the portion of this gods' sacrifice, along with the other gods like Indra and Upendra.


निषिध्यमान: स सदस्यमुखैर्दक्षो गिरित्राय विसृज्य शापम् ।

तस्माद्विनिष्क्रम्य विवृद्धमन्युर्जगाम कौरव्य निजं निकेतनम् ॥१९॥


निषिध्यमान: स:
warned, he,
सदस्य-मुखै:-दक्ष:
by the congregation's chiefs, Daksha
गिरित्राय विसृज्य शापम्
to Shiva flinging the curse
तस्मात्-विनिष्क्रम्य
from there got out
विवृद्ध-मन्यु:-जगाम
increased anger, went
कौरव्य निजम् निकेतनम्
O Kuru! To own abode

O scion of the Kurus! Vidura! Even though he was warned by the chief members of the congragation, Daksha hurled the curse on Shiva, and in added anger got out from there and went to his own abode.


विज्ञाय शापं गिरिशानुगाग्रणीर्नन्दीश्वरो रोषकषायदूषित: ।

दक्षाय शापं विससर्ज दारुणं ये चान्वमोदंस्तदवाच्यतां द्विजा: ॥२०॥


विज्ञाय शापम्
knowing of the curse
गिरिश-अनुग-
Shiva's attendants'
अग्रणी:-नन्दीश्वर:
chief, Nandeeshvara
रोष-कषाय-दूषित:
with rage growing wild
दक्षाय शापम्
to Daksha curse
विससर्ज दारुणम्
gave terrible
ये च-अन्वमोदन्-
those and (who) supported
तत्-अवाच्यताम् द्विजा:
that blasphemy the Braahmanas

When, the chief of the attendents of Shiva, Nandeeshvara, came to know of the curse, he grew wild with rage. He then gave a terrible curse to Daksha and to all those Braahmins who had supported his this blesphamy.


य एतन्मर्त्यमुद्दिश्य भगवत्यप्रतिद्रुहि ।

द्रुह्यत्यज्ञ: पृथग्दृष्टिस्तत्त्वतो विमुखो भवेत् ॥२१॥


य: एतत्-मर्त्यम्-उद्दिश्य
who this perishable body, identifying
भगवति-अप्रतिद्रुहि
towards The Lord, unvindictive
द्रुह्यति-अज्ञ: पृथक्-दृष्टि:-
is against, that fool, discriminative visioned
तत्त्वत: विमुख: भवेत्
from Truth turned away, may be

That fool who identifies himself with this perishable body and has discriminative vision towards The unvindictive Lord and holds enimosity towards Him, will be turned away from the knowledge of Truth.


गृहेषु कूटधर्मेषु सक्तो ग्राम्यसुखेच्छया ।

कर्मतन्त्रं वितनुते वेदवादविपन्नधी: ॥२२॥


गृहेषु कूट-धर्मेषु सक्त:
in household, in self deceptive (activities) attached
ग्राम्य-सुख-इच्छया
by carnal pleasures desirous
कर्म-तन्त्रम् वितनुते
rituals elaborate performs
वेद-वाद-विपन्न-धी:
Veda's sayings, false judging minded

He, Daksha, is attached to the self deceptive household duties. Desirous of carnal pleasures, he performs elaborate rituals. His mind misinterprets the sayings of the Vedas.


बुद्ध्या पराभिध्यायिन्या विस्मृतात्मगति: पशु:।

स्त्रीकाम: सोऽस्त्वतितरां दक्षो वस्तमुखोऽचिरात् ॥२३॥


बुद्ध्या पर-अभिध्यायिन्या
by the intellect (capable of) The Truth contemplating
विस्मृत-आत्मगति: पशु:
(has) forgotten self nature, a brute,
स्त्री-काम: स:-अस्तु-अतितराम्
fond of women, he may be intensely
दक्ष: वस्त-मुख:-अचिरात्
Daksha goat headed soon

Daksha, even capable of an intellect to contemplate on The Truth, has forgotten the nature of his true self. He, like a brute will be intensely fond of women and soon his face will be of a goat.


विद्याबुद्धिरविद्यायां कर्ममय्यामसौ जड: ।

संसरन्त्विह ये चामुमनु शर्वावमानिनम् ॥२४॥


विद्या-बुद्धि:-अविद्यायाम्
knowledge, understands in ignorance
कर्ममय्याम्-असौ जड:
in rituals, this stupid
संसरन्तु-इह ये च-अमुम्-
may be born again and again, here, those and him
अनु शर्व-अवमानिनम्
following Shiva's slighter

This stupid person understands knowledge in the ignorance of ritual practice. May he and those of his followers, who have slighted Shiva, be born again and again in this world.


गिर:श्रुताया: पुष्पिण्या मधुगन्धेन भूरिणा ।

मथ्ना चोन्मथितात्मान: सम्मुह्यन्तु हरद्विष: ॥२५॥


गिर:श्रुताया: पुष्पिण्या:
the sayings of Vedas, flowery
मधु-गन्धेन भूरिणा
sweet smelling, intense
मथ्ना च-उन्मथित-आत्मान:
by the churner and churned self
सम्मुह्यन्तु हरद्विष:
may be bewildered, Hara's (Shiva's) enemies

May the enemies of Hara, Shiva, be always bewildered by their minds being churned by the churning rod in the shape of the intensely alluring sweet smelling flowery sayings of the Vedas.


सर्वभक्षा द्विजा वृत्त्यै धृतविद्यातपोव्रता: ।

वित्तदेहेन्द्रियारामा याचका विचरन्त्विह ॥२६॥


सर्व-भक्षा: द्विजा: वृत्त्यै:
everything eaters, Braahmanas by livelihood
धृत-विद्या:-तप:-व्रता:
devoted to learning, austerities and vows holding
वित्त-देह-इन्द्रिय-आरामा:
wealth, body, senses revelling in
याचका: विचरन्तु-इह
beggars may roam here

The Braahmins, inspite of given to learning, austerities and observing vows, they will eat anything and will revel in wealth, sense objects and body and may roam here as beggars.


तस्यैवं ददत: शापं श्रुत्वा द्विजकुलाय वै ।

भृगु: प्रत्यसृजच्छापं ब्रह्मदण्डं दुरत्ययम् ॥२७॥


तस्य-एवम् ददत: शापम्
his thus giving curse,
श्रुत्वा द्विज-कुलाय वै
hearing, to the Braahmana race indeed
भृगु: प्रत्यसृजत्-शापम्
Bhrigu counter inflicted curse,
ब्रह्मदण्डम् दुरत्ययम्
by Braahmanas punishment like unrevokeable

When Bhrigu heard him giving curse to the Braahmana race like this, he counter cursed, which is a punishment by the Braahmana, as their curse is unrevokeable.


भवव्रतधरा ये च ये च तान् समनुव्रता: ।

पाखण्डिनस्ते भवन्तु सच्छास्त्रपरिपन्थिन: ॥२८॥


भव-व्रत-धरा ये च
to Bhava devoted those and
ये च तान् समनुव्रता:
those and them, following
पाखण्डिन:-ते भवन्तु
hypocrites they may become
सत्-शास्त्र-परिपन्थिन:
true scriptures acting against

Those who are devoted to Shiva, and those who are their followers, may they become hypocrites and act against the true scriptures.


नष्टशौचा मूढधियो जटाभस्मास्थिधारिण: ।

विशन्तु शिवदीक्षायां यत्र दैवं सुरासवम् ॥२९॥


नष्ट-शौचा: मूढ-धिय:
giving up all purity, dumb minded
जटा-भस्म-अस्थि-धारिण:
matted locked, ashes bones adorning
विशन्तु शिव-दीक्षायाम्
may enter Shiva's initiation
यत्र दैवम् सुरा-आसवम्
where gods are liquor and intoxication

They, who have given up all purity, those dumb minded, with matted locks, wearing ashes and bones, may enter Shiva's initiation, where liquor and intoxication rule as gods.


ब्रह्म च ब्राह्मणांश्चैव यद्यूयं परिनिन्दथ ।

सेतुं विधारणं पुंसामत: पाखण्डमाश्रिता: ॥३०॥


ब्रह्म च ब्राह्मणान्-च-एव
Vedas and Braahmanas and also
यत्-यूयम् परिनिन्दथ
because you all denounce
सेतुम् विधारणम् पुंसाम्-
proprieties maintaining of the people,
अत: पाखण्डम्-आश्रिता:
therefore heretics (you) accept

Because you people denounce the Vedas and Braahmanas, who maintain the proprieties of the people, you accept the ways of the heretics.


एष एव हि लोकानां शिव: पन्था: सनातन: ।

यं पूर्वे चानुसंतस्थुर्यत्प्रमाणं जनार्दन: ॥३१॥


एष: एव हि लोकानाम्
this only indeed, for the people
शिव: पन्था: सनातन:
auspicious path Vedic
यम् पूर्वे च-अनुसंतस्थु:-
which the ancients and followed
यत्-प्रमाणम् जनार्दन:
whose authority is Janaardana (Vishnu)

The auspicious path for the people is the Vaidic path, which was followed by the ancient people and whose authority is Janaardana (Vishnu).


तद्ब्रह्म परमं शुद्धं सतां वर्त्म सनातनम् ।

विगर्ह्य यात पाखण्डं दैवं वो यत्र भूतराट् ॥३२॥


तत्-ब्रह्म परमम् शुद्धम्
that Vedas, supremely faultless
सताम् वर्त्म सनातनम्
of the pious the path eternal
विगर्ह्य यात पाखण्डम्
condemning, take to heretics
दैवम् व: यत्र भूतराट्
deity your where (is) the ghosts' lord

You comdemn that supremely faultless eternal Vedas, the path which is followed by the pious, and take to heretics, where your diety is the lord of the ghosts.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
तस्यैवं वदत: शापं भृगो: स भगवान् भव: ।

निश्चक्राम तत: किञ्चिद्विमना इव सानुग: ॥३३॥


तस्य-एवम् वदत: शापम्
his thus uttering curse
भृगो: स: भगवान् भव:
by Bhrigu, He the Lord Shiva
निश्चक्राम तत: किञ्चित्-
went away from there somewhat
विमना इव सानुग:
saddened like, with followers

As Bhrigu thus uttered the curse, He, Lord Shiva, went away from there, some what saddened like, along with his followers.


तेऽपि विश्वसृज: सत्रं सहस्रपरिवत्सरान् ।

संविधाय महेष्वास यत्रेज्य ऋषभो हरि: ॥३४॥


ते-अपि विश्वसृज: सत्रम्
they also, the lords of the beings, the congregation
सहस्र-परिवत्सरान्
of a thousand years
संविधाय महेष्वास
performed, O Great archer, Vidura!
यत्र-इज्य ऋषभ: हरि:
where, worshipped (was) Supreme Being Shree Hari

The lords of the created beings, the Prajaapatis, performed the congregation of the sacrifice which continued for a thousand years, in which the chief worshipped Diety was the Supreme Being Shree Hari.


आप्लुत्यावभृथं यत्र गङ्गा यमुनयान्विता ।

विरजेनात्मना सर्वे स्वं स्वं धाम ययुस्तत: ॥३५॥


आप्लुत्य-अवभृथम् यत्र
bathing, after the conclusion, where
गङ्गा यमुनया-अन्विता
Ganga, with Yamuna joins
विरजेन-आत्मना सर्वे
with purified selves all
स्वम स्वम् धाम ययु:-तत:
to own abodes went from there

After the conclusion of the sacrifice, they bathed in the waters where Ganga is joined by Yamuna. All of them absolutely purified, they returned to their own abodes.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे दक्षशापो नाम् द्वितीय: अध्याय: ॥२॥


Thus ends the second discourse entitled, 'Daksha Imprecation', in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
