मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
सदा विद्विषतोरेवं कालो वै ध्रियमाणयो: ।

जामातु: श्वसुरस्यापि सुमहानतिचक्रमे ॥१॥


सदा विद्विषत:-एवम्
always inimical, thus,
काल: वै ध्रियमाणयो:
time indeed holding
जामातु: श्वसुरस्य-अपि
of son -in-law and father-in-law
सुमहान्-अतिचक्रमे
much passed

The son-in-law and the father-in-law thus holding enimosity, for each other, much time passed.


यदाभिषिक्तो दक्षस्तु ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना ।

प्रजापतीनां सर्वेषामाधिपत्ये स्मयोभवत् ॥२॥


यदा-अभिषिक्त: दक्ष:-तु
when was coroneted, Daksha indeed
ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना
by Brahmaa, the lord of gods
प्रजापतीनाम् सर्वेषाम्-
of the Prajaapatis all
आधिपत्ये स्मयोभवत्
the ruler, pride increased

Indeed, when Daksha was coronated as the ruler of all the Prajaapatis, by the lord of the gods, Brahmaa, his pride increased.


इष्ट्वा स वाजपेयेन ब्रह्मिष्ठानभिभूय च ।

बृहस्पतिसवं नाम समारेभे क्रतूत्तमम् ॥३॥


इष्ट्वा स: वाजपेयेन
having performed, he by Vaajapeya (sacrifice)
ब्रह्मिष्ठान्-अभिभूय च
the Truth knowers insulting
बृहस्पतिसवम् नाम
Brihaspati-sava named
समारेभे क्रतु-उत्तमम्
commenced sacrifice highest

After having performed the Vaajapeya sacrifice, where he insulted the Truth knowers, he commenced the highest of all sacrifices, named as Brihaspati-sava.


तस्मिन् ब्रह्मर्षय: सर्वे देवर्षिपितृदेवता: ।

आसन् कृतस्वस्त्ययनास्तत्पत्न्यश्च सभर्तृका: ॥४॥


तस्मिन् ब्रह्मर्षय: सर्वे
in that, the Braahmana sages all
देवर्षि-पितृ-देवता:
celestial sages, manes and gods
आसन् कृत-स्वस्त्ययना:-
came, adorning auspicious attires
तत्-पत्न्य:-च सभर्तृका:
there the wives and with the husbands

In that Brihaspati-sava, all the Braahmana sages, the celestial sages, the manes and gods had come. There, the wives came along with their husbands all of them adorned in auspicious attire.


तदुपश्रुत्य नभसि खेचराणां प्रजल्पताम् ।

सती दाक्षायणी देवी पितुर्यज्ञमहोत्सवम् ॥५॥


तत्-उपश्रुत्य नभसि
that heard, in the sky
खेचराणाम् प्रजल्पताम्
of the heavenly beings, talking
सती दाक्षायणी देवी
Satee Daksha's daughter, the noble
पितु:-यज्ञ-महोत्सवम्
father's sacrifice great ceremony

The noble Satee, Dakhsa's daughter, heard of the great ceremony of her father's sacrifice from the talks of the heavenly beings who were flying in the sky.


व्रजन्ती सर्वतो दिग्भ्य उपदेववरस्त्रिय: ।

विमानयाना: सप्रेष्ठा निष्ककण्ठी: सुवासस: ॥६॥


व्रजन्ती: सर्वत: दिग्भ्य:
coming from all directions
उपदेव-वर-स्त्रिय:
of the Gandharvas beautiful women
विमान-याना: सप्रेष्ठा:
by celestial cars, with husbands
निष्क-कण्ठी: सुवासस:
golden necklace in the necks, well dressed

From all the directions came the beautiful women of the Gandharvas, with their husbands, wearing golden necklaces in the neck and well dressed, in celestial cars.


दृष्ट्वा स्वनिलयाभ्याशे लोलाक्षीर्मृष्टकुण्डला: ।

पतिं भूतपतिं देवमौत्सुक्यादभ्यभाषत ॥७॥


दृष्ट्वा स्व-निलय-अभ्याशे
seeing, own house's nearby
लोल-अक्षी:-मृष्ट-कुण्डला:
dancing eyed, dangling ear-ringed
पतिम् भूतपतिम् देवम्-
husband, the lord of the ghosts
औत्सुक्यात्-अभ्यभाषत
in eagerness said

She saw them dancing eyed with dangling ear-rings pass from near her abode. In eagerness, she said to her husband Shiva, the lord of the ghosts,....


सति-उवाच -
Satee said -
प्रजापतेस्ते श्वशुरस्य साम्प्रतं निर्यापितो यज्ञमहोत्सव: किल ।

वयं च तत्राभिसराम वाम ते यद्यर्थितामी विबुधा व्रजन्ति हि ॥८॥


प्रजापते:-ते श्वशुरस्य
of Prajaapati, your father-in-law's
साम्प्रतम् निर्यापित:
just now is going on
यज्ञ-महोत्सव: किल
sacrifice ceremony, certainly
वयम् च तत्र-अभिसराम
we and there may go
वाम ते यदि-अर्थिता-
O Vaama! Your if desire is
अमी विबुधा व्रजन्ति हि
these gods are going indeed

Certainly the ceremony of a sacrifice is going on at your father-in-law, Prajaapati's house. O Vaama! If you so desire, may we also go there as these gods are also going there.


तस्मिन् भगिन्यो मम भर्तृभि: स्वकैर्ध्रुवं गमिष्यन्ति सुहृद्दिदृक्षव: ।

अहं च तस्मिन् भवताभिकामये सहोपनीतं परिब्रर्हमर्हितुम् ॥९॥


तस्मिन् भगिन्य: मम
in that (ceremony) sisters my
भर्तृभि: स्वकै:-
with husbands theirs'
ध्रुवम् गमिष्यन्ति
certainly will go
सुहृद्-दिदृक्षव:
friends to meet
अहम् च तस्मिन्
I and in that
भवता-अभिकामये
by your, desire
सह-उपनीतम्
with, given
परिब्रर्हम्-अर्हितुम्
gifts to receive

In that ceremony, cetainly, my sisters will be going along with their own husbands desiring to meet their kinsfolk. I too am eager to go with you and receive the gifts bestowed there.


तत्र स्वसृर्मे ननु भर्तृसम्मिता मातृष्वसृ: क्लिन्नधियं च मातरम् ।

द्रक्ष्ये चिरोत्कण्ठमना महर्षिभिरुन्नीयमानं च मृडाध्वरध्वजम् ॥१०॥


तत्र स्वसृ:-मे ननु
there, sisters my, indeed
भर्तृ-सम्मिता मातृष्वसृ:
of husbands esteemed, aunts (mother's sisters)
क्लिन्न-धियम् च मातरम्
affection hearted and mother
द्रक्ष्ये चिर-उत्कण्ठ-मना
will see, for long longing in heart
महर्षिभि:-उन्नीयमानम्
by the eminent sages conducted
च मृड-अध्वर-ध्वजम्
and , O loving Lord! the sacrifice great

O Loving Lord! There I will get to see my sisters who are honoured by their husbands, and my mother's sisters, and also my affection hearted mother, whom I am longing to meet for long, and also the great sacrifice which is being conducted by eminent sages.


त्वय्येतदाश्चर्यमजात्ममायया विनिर्मितं भाति गुणत्रयात्मकम् ।

तथाप्यहं योषिदतत्त्वविच्च ते दीना दिदृक्षे भव मे भवक्षितिम् ॥११॥


त्वयि-एतत्-आश्चर्यम्-अज-
in you, this is wonderful, O Birth less One!
आत्म-मायया विनिर्मितम्
by (your) own Maayaa created,
भाति गुण-त्रय-आत्मकम्
appears the three Gunas comprising of
तथा-अपि-अहम् योषित्-
even then I, a woman
अतत्त्व-वित्-च
the Truth not knowing and
ते दीना दिदृक्षे
yours, pitiable, want to see
भव मे भवक्षितिम्
O Bhava! my birthplace

O Birthless Bhava! This wonderful creation comprising of the three Gunas,created by your own Maayaa, appears in you. Even then, I, a pitiable woman, unaware of the Truth, am eager to see my birthplace.


पश्य प्रयान्तीरभवान्ययोषितोऽप्यलंकृता: कान्तसखा वरूथश: ।

यासां व्रजद्भि: शितिकण्ठ मण्डितं नभो विमानै: कलहंसपाण्डुभि: ॥१२॥


पश्य प्रयान्ती:-अभव-
see going, O Birth less One!
अन्य-योषित:-अपि-
other women also
अलंकृता: कान्त-सखा
adorned husbands accompanied
वरूथश: यासाम् व्रजद्भि:
in groups, by whose going
शितिकण्ठ
O Blue necked One!
मण्डितम् नभ: विमानै:
decorated sky by aerial cars
कलहंस-पाण्डुभि:
swans white

O Blue Throat Birthless One! Do see that other women are also giong, well adorned and acompanied by their husbands. As they go by the aerial cars, the sky looks decorated as though with white swans.


कथं सुताया: पितृगेहकौतुकं निशम्य देह: सुरवर्य नेङ्गते ।

अनाहुता अप्यभियन्ति सौहृदं भर्तुर्गुरोर्देहकृतश्च केतनम् ॥१३॥


कथम् सुताया:
how a daughter's
पितृ-गेह-कौतुकम्
father's house celebrations
निशम्य देह:
hearing , the body
सुरवर्य न-इङ्गते
O Chief of gods!, will not be moved
अनाहुता अपि-अभियन्ति
un-invited also do go
सौहृदम् भर्तु:-गुरो:-
dear ones, husband's, teacher's
देहकृत:-च केतनम्
parents and house

How will a daughter's mind and body be not moved, hearing of celebrations at her father's house? People do go uninvited.to the dear ones, huband's, teacher's and parent's houses.


तन्मे प्रसीदेदममर्त्य वाञ्छितं कर्तुं भवान्कारुणिको बतार्हति ।

त्वयाऽऽत्मनोऽर्धेऽहमदभ्रचक्षुषा निरूपिता मानुगृहाण याचित: ॥१४॥


तत्-मे प्रसीद-इदम्-
so, on me be pleased
अमर्त्य वाञ्छितम् कर्तुम्
this, O Immortal One! Desired to do
भवान्-कारुणिक:
you compassionate
बत-अर्हति
indeed are capable of
त्वया-आत्मन:-अर्धे-
by you in your half
अहम्-अदभ्र-चक्षुषा निरूपिता
I, by soliciting eyes placed
मा-अनुगृहाण याचित:
on me be compassionate, as begged

O Immortal One! Be pleased on me. You are compassionate and so are indeed capable to grant this as desired. By your soliciting eyes, I am placed in your half self. As entreated, do be compassionate on me.


एवं गिरित्र: प्रिययाभिभाषित: प्रत्यभ्यधत्त प्रहसन् सुहृत्प्रिय: ।

सस्मारितो मर्मभिद: कुवागिषून् यानाह को विश्वसृजां समक्षत: ॥१५॥


एवम् गिरित्र: प्रियया-
thus mountain residing Shiva, by beloved
अभिभाषित: प्रत्यभ्यधत्त
spoken, answered
प्रहसन् सुहृत्-प्रिय:
laughingly, to dear ones loving
सस्मारित: मर्म-भिद:
reminded, heart piercing
कुवाक्-इषून् यान्-आह
reproaching word shafts, which were uttered
क: विश्वसृजाम् समक्षत:
by Daksha, in the Prajaapatis' presence

The mountain residing Shiva, who is loving to his dear ones, was thus spoken to by his beloved. He then answered to her laughingly, even though he was reminded of the heart piercing reproaching words uttered by Daksha in the presence of the Prajaapatis.


त्वयोदितं शोभनमेव शोभने अनाहुता अप्यभियन्ति बन्धुषु ।

ते यद्यनुत्पादितदोषदृष्टयो बलीयसानात्म्यमदेन मन्युना ॥१६॥


त्वया-उदितम् शोभनम्-एव
by you said, nice only,
शोभने अनाहुता अपि-
O good lady! (that) uninvited also
अभियन्ति बन्धुषु
may go to friends
ते यदि-अनुत्पादित-
they if, are not cropped
दोष-दृष्टय: बलीयसा-
up with malice mind strong
अनात्म्य-मदेन मन्युना
body identification and anger

O Good Lady! It is good only what you say, that one may go to friends house even if uninvited. But that is so, if their minds are not cropped up with malice generated by strong identification with the body and anger.


विद्यातपोवित्तवपुर्वय:कुलै: सतां गुणै: षड्भिरसत्तमेतरै: ।

स्मृतौ हतायां भृतमानदुर्दृश: स्तब्धा न पश्यन्ति हि धाम भूयसाम् ॥१७॥


विद्या-तप:-वित्त-वपु:-
learning, austerities, wealth, body,
वय:कुलै: सताम् गुणै:
youth and lineage, of noble the qualities,
षड्भि:-असत्तम-इतरै:
six, of the arrogant, are non-qualities
स्मृतौ हतायाम्
(when) judgement fails
भृतमान-दुर्दृश:
by heightened arrogance
स्तब्धा: न पश्यन्ति
awed, do not see
हि धाम भूयसाम्
indeed the glory of the exalted

The six qualities, learning, austerity, wealth, good physique, youth and lineage, are those of the noble people which become negative qualities for the arrogant. Because, when their judgement fails them, by the hightened arrogance, they are awed, and, indeed do not see the glory of the exalted people.


नैतादृशानां स्वजनव्यपेक्षया गृहान् प्रतीयादनवस्थितात्मनाम् ।

येऽभ्यागतान् वक्रधियाभिचक्षते आरोपितभ्रूभिरमर्षणाक्षिभि: ॥१८॥


न-एतादृशानाम्
not of such kind
स्वजन-व्यपेक्षया
own people considering
गृहान् प्रतीयात्-
houses should go
अनवस्थित-आत्मनाम्
(who) the unsteady selves
ये-अभ्यागतान्
who the visitors
वक्र-धिया-अभिचक्षते
by doubtful thought interpret
आरोपित-भ्रूभि:-
crooked eyebrows
अमर्षण-अक्षिभि:
angry eyes

Mistaking them to be ones own people, one should not go to the house of such unsteady minded people, who interpret their visitors with doubtful mind, crooked eyebrows and angry eyes.


तथारिभिर्न व्यथते शिलीमुखै: शेतेऽर्दिताङ्गो हृदयेन दूयता ।

स्वानां यथा वक्रधियां दुरुक्तिभिर्दिवानिशं तप्यति मर्मताडित: ॥१९॥


तथा-अरिभि:-न व्यथते
as much, by enemy's does not pain,
शिलीमुखै: शेते-अर्दित-अङ्ग:
pierced arrows, sleeps mutilated bodied
हृदयेन दूयता
in heart tortured
स्वानाम् यथा
of own people's as much
वक्र-धियाम् दुरुक्तिभि:-
pervert minded abusive words
दिवा-निशम् तप्यति
day and night suffers
मर्म-ताडित:
in the deep heart assaulted

A person who is pierced by the arrows of the enemy, even with a mutilated body does not feel the pain as much, because, he sleeps with pain in the heart. But one who is pierced by the arrows of abusive words, of his own people, suffers day and night, because he is assaulted deep in the heart.


व्यक्तं त्वमुत्कृष्टगते: प्रजापते: प्रियाऽऽत्मजानामसि सुभ्रु सम्मता ।

अथापि मानं न पितु: प्रपत्स्यसे मदाश्रयात्क: परितप्यते यत: ॥२०॥


व्यक्तम् त्वम्-उत्कृष्ट-गते:
obviously, you, of the high ranked
प्रजापते: प्रिया-आत्मजानाम्-
Prajaapati's, dear of the daughters
असि सुभ्रु सम्मता
are, O Beautiful One! Esteemed
अथापि मानम् न
even then, honour not
पितु: प्रपत्स्यसे
of father will get
मत्-आश्रयात्-
(because of) with me connected
क: परितप्यते यत:
Daksha is jealous because

O Beautiful One! It is obvious that you are the esteemed and dearest of all the daughters of the highest ranking Prajaapati. Even then you will not get the honour of your father, because of your connection with me, and because Daksha is jealous of me.


पापच्यमानेन हृदाऽऽतुरेन्द्रिय: समृद्भि: पूरुषबुद्धिसाक्षिणाम् ।

अकल्प एषामधिरोढुमञ्जसा पदं परं द्वेष्टि यथासुरा हरिम् ॥२१॥


पापच्यमानेन हृदा-
with burning hearts
आतुर-इन्द्रिय: समृद्भि:
and troubled in mind, of the exalted
पूरुष-बुद्धि-साक्षिणाम्
men's minds witnesses, unable
अकल्प एषाम्-अधिरोढुम्-
these to supersede
अञ्जसा पदम् परम्
easily the state high
द्वेष्टि यथा-असुरा: हरिम्
hate (them) like demons Shree Hari

They merely hate those exalted ones who are a witness to man's mind, because they are unable to supersede them easily, and achieve the high state, just as the demons hate Shree Hari.


प्रत्युद्गमप्रश्रयणाभिवादनं विधीयते साधु मिथ: सुमध्यमे ।

प्राज्ञै: परस्मै पुरुषाय चेतसा गुहाशयायैव न देहमानिने ॥२२॥


प्रत्युद्गम-प्रश्रयणा-
rising to welcome
अभिवादनम् विधीयते
and to greet, is conducted
साधु मिथ: सुमध्यमे
by the noble amongst them, O Beautiful One!
प्राज्ञै: परस्मै पुरुषाय
by the wise, to the Supreme Person
चेतसा गुहाशयाय-एव
mentally, in the hearts residing in
न देह-मानिने
not to of body proud

O Beautiful One! Among the wise, the rising welcoming and greeting is coducted, mentally to the Supreme Person residing in the hearts of the jivas and not to those who are proud of their bodies.


सत्त्वं विशुद्धं वसुदेवशब्दितं यदीयते तत्र पुमानपावृत: ।

सत्त्वे च तस्मिन् भगवान् वासुदेवो ह्यधोक्षजो मे नमसा विधीयते ॥२३॥


सत्त्वम् विशुद्धम्
Saatvic, pure
वसुदेव-शब्दितम्
Vasudeva is called
पुमान्-अपावृत:
The Person unveiled
सत्त्वे च तस्मिन्
in pure and in that
भगवान् वासुदेव:
The Lord Vaasudeva
हि-अधोक्षज:
indeed beyond the senses,
मे नमसा विधीयते
by me is obeisance conducted

In that pure heart is the Saatvic and pure Vasudeva named, (shrine), where The Lord Vaasudeva is, Who is beyond sense perception and to Him obeisance is conducted by me.


तत्ते निरीक्ष्यो न पितापि देहकृद् दक्षो मम द्विट् तदनुव्रताश्च ये ।

यो विश्वसृग्यज्ञगतं बरोरु मामनागसं दुर्वचसाकरोत्तिर: ॥२४॥


तत्-ते- निरीक्ष्य:
so, should be seen
न पिता-अपि देहकृत्
not father though birth giver
दक्ष: मम द्विट्
Daksha is my enemy
तत्-अनुव्रता:-च ये
his followers and those who
य: विश्वसृक्-यज्ञ-गतम्
who the Vishwasrik sacrifice during
बरोरु माम्-अनागसम्
O Beautiful One! me faultless
दुर्वचसा-अकरोत्-तिर:
by abusive words did insult

So you should not see your father, though he is your birth giver. Daksha, and those who are his followers are my enemy. O Beautiful One! during the Vishvasrik sacrifice, he insulted me with abusive words, without any fault of mine.


यदि व्रजिष्यस्यतिहाय मद्वचो भद्रं भवत्या न ततो भविष्यति ।

सम्भावितस्य स्वजनात्पराभवो यदा स सद्यो मरणाय कल्पते ॥२५॥


यदि व्रजिष्यसि-अतिहाय
if (you) go, ignoring
मद्-वच: भद्रम् भवत्या
my words, well by you
न तत: भविष्यति
will not then be
सम्भावितस्य स्वजनात्-पराभव:
of the respected (people), by own people insulted
यदा स सद्य:
when, he soon
मरणाय कल्पते
for death is destined

Ignoring my words, if you go there, you will be doing no good. Because when esteemed people are rebuked by their relatives, soon, they are destined to death.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे उमारुद्रसंवादे तृतीय: अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥३॥



Thus ends the third discourse, forming part of the Dialogue between Goddess Umaa and Lord Rudra, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
