मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
भवो भवान्या निधनं प्रजापतेरसत्कृताया अवगम्य नारदात् ।

स्वपार्षदसैन्यं च तदध्वरर्भुभिर्विद्रावितं क्रोधमपारमादधे ॥१॥


भव: भवान्या: निधनम्
Shiva, of Bhavaani (Satee) death
प्रजापते:-असत्कृताया:
by Prajaapati dishonoured of
अवगम्य नारदात्
knowing from Naarada
स्व-पार्षद-सैन्यम् च
own attendents' army and
तत्-अध्वर-ऋभुभि:-
that sacrifice's by Ribhus
विद्रावितम्
chased away
क्रोधम्-अपारम्-आदधे
anger boundless overcome

Shiva came to know from Naarada, that dishonoured by Prajaapati, Bhavaani, Satee had died, and that his army of attendents were chased away by the Ribhus of that sacrifice, He was overcome by boundless anger.


क्रुद्ध: सुदष्टोष्ठपुट: स धूर्जटिर्जटां तडिद्विह्निसटोग्ररोचिषम् ।

उत्कृत्य रुद्र: सहसोत्थितो हसन् गम्भीरनादो विससर्ज तां भुवि ॥२॥

The Matted haired (Shiva) a matted lock
तडित्-वह्निसटा-
lightening fire flame
उग्र-रोचिषम्
like highly shining

pulling out,
सहसा-उत्थित:
suddenly arising
हसन् गम्भीर-नाद:
laughing with roaring voice
विससर्ज ताम् भुवि
dashed it on the ground

The matted haired Shiva was highly enraged, and He pulled out one matted lock, which shone like a lightening fire flame, He suddenly arose, and laughed with a roaring voice and dashed the lock on the ground.


ततोऽतिकायस्तनुवा स्पृशन्दिवं सहस्रबाहुर्घनरुक् त्रिसूर्यदृक् ।

करालदंष्ट्रो ज्वलदग्निमूर्धज: कपालमाली विविधोद्यतायुध: ॥३॥


तत:-अतिकाय:-तनु-
from that, tremendous bodied
वा स्पृशन्-दिवम्
or touching the sky
सहस्र-बाहु:-घन-रुक्
thousand armed, cloud complexioned
त्रि-सूर्य-दृक्
three Sun (like) eyes
कराल-दंष्ट्र:
ferocious toothed
ज्वलत्-अग्नि-मूर्धज:
ablaze fire like hair
कपाल-माली
skull garlanded
विविध-उद्यत-आयुध:
various armed with weapons

From that lock of hair emerged a tremendous bodied being, touching the sky, thousand armed, dark as the cloud, having Sun like three eyes, with ferocious teeth, hair of the color of blazing fire, wearing a garland of skulls, and having various weapons on him.


तं किं करोमीति गृणन्तमाह बद्धाञ्जलिं भगवान् भूतनाथ: ।

दक्षं सयज्ञं जहि म॒द्भटानां त्वमग्रणी रुद्र भटांशको मे ॥४॥


तम् किम्-करोमि-इति
him, ''what should I do" thus
गृणन्तम्-आह
praying asked
बद्ध-अञ्जलिम्
with joined palms
भगवान् भूतनाथ:
Lord Bhootanaath (Shiva)
दक्षम् सयज्ञम् जहि
Daksha along with the sacrifice destroy
म॒त्-भटानाम् त्वम्-अग्रणी
my attendants' you are the leader
रुद्र भट-अंशक: मे
O Rudra Bhatt! part of me

When, with joined palms praying he asked, The Lord Bhootanaath, Shiva, What should I do', Shiva told him to destroy Daksha along with the sacrifice, and also that he was the leader of His attendants and also a part of His own self.


आज्ञप्त एवं कुपितेन मन्युना स देवदेवं परिचक्रमे विभुम् ।

मेने तदाऽऽत्मानमसङ्गरंहसा महीयसां तात सह: सहिष्णुम् ॥५॥


आज्ञप्त एवम् कुपितेन मन्युना
ordered thus, by the angered wrathful
स: देव-देवम्
he the god of the gods
परिचक्रमे विभुम्
went round the all pervading Lord
मेने तदा-आत्मानम्-
understood then, himself (because of)
असङ्ग-रंहसा महीयसाम्
uncontrolled, speed, of the most powerful
तात सह: सहिष्णुम्
O Dear Vidura! braving the might

O Dear Vidura! When he was ordered thus by the all pervading god of the gods, Shiva, he went round Him. He then felt himself, because of his speed, to be able of braving the might of even the mightiest.


अन्वीयमान: स तु रुद्रपार्षदैर्भृशं नदद्भिर्व्यनदत्सुभैरवम् ।

उद्यम्य शूलं जगदन्तकान्तकं स प्राद्रवद् घोषणभूषणाङ्घ्रि: ॥६॥


अन्वीयमान: स: तु
followed by, he indeed
रुद्र-पार्षदै:-भृशम् नदद्भि:-
by Rudra's attendents, terribly roaring
व्यनत्-सुभैरवम्
thundering violently
उद्यम्य शूलम्
taking up the trident
जगत्-अन्तक-अन्तकम्
the world's destroyer destroying
स: प्राद्रवद्
he leapt forward
घोषण-भूषण-अङ्घ्रि:
sounding the anklets of (his) feet

He was followed by terribly roaring Rudra's attendents. He then lifted up the trident, capable of destroying the world's destroyer, death, and leapt forward with a violent thunder, sounding the anklets of his feet.


अथर्त्विजो यजमान: सदस्या: ककुभ्युदीच्यां प्रसमीक्ष्य रेणुम् ।

तम: किमेतत्कुत एतद्रजोऽभूदिति द्विजा द्विजपत्न्यश्च दध्यु: ॥७॥


अथ-ऋत्विज:
then, the (sacrifice) conducting priests
यजमान: सदस्या:
the sacrificer (Daksha), members
ककुभि-उदीच्याम्
in the direction northern
प्रसमीक्ष्य रेणुम्
looking at the dust
तम: किम्-एतत्-
and darkness, what is this
कुत:-एतत्-रज:-अभूत्-
from where this dust come
इति द्विजा:
thus the Braahmanas
द्विज-पत्न्य:-च दध्यु:
and the Braahmana wives wondered

Then, the sacrifice conductors, the sacrificer Daksha, the members, the Braahmanas and their wives , looking at the dust, and the darkness, in the northern direction, wondered from where that dust had come.


वाता न वान्ति न हि सन्ति दस्यव: प्राचीनबर्हिर्जीवति होग्रदण्ड: ।

गावो न काल्यन्त इदं कुतो रजो लोकोऽधुना किं प्रलयाय कल्पते ॥८॥


वाता: न वान्ति
winds do not blow
न हि सन्ति दस्यव:
not indeed are there robbers
प्राचीनबर्हि:-जीवति
(King) Praacheenabarhi is living
हि-उग्रदण्ड:
surely is a stern ruler
गाव: न काल्यन्ते
cows do not come back (from pastures)
इदम् कुत: रज:
this from where the dust
लोक:-अधुना किम्
the worlds now is it
प्रलयाय कल्पते
for doom prepares

The winds are not blowing, there indeed are no robbers, it is not yet the time for the cows to return from the pastures, and the stren king Pracheenbarhi is still alive, then from where is this dust? Is the world preparing for its doom?


प्रसूतिमिश्रा: स्त्रिय उद्विग्नचित्ता ऊचुर्विपाको वृजिनस्यैष तस्य ।

यत्पश्यन्तीनां दुहितृणां प्रजेश: सुतां सतीमवदध्यावनागाम् ॥९॥


प्रसूति-मिश्रा:
Prasooti and other
स्त्रिय: उद्विग्न-चित्ता:
women all trouble minded
ऊचु:-विपाक:
said, ' Evil result
वृजिनस्य-एष: तस्य
of the sin this, of his
यत्-पश्यन्तीनाम्
that as they watched
दुहितृणाम्
the daughters
प्रजेश: सुताम् सतीम्-
of the public the lord (Daksha) daughter Satee
अवदध्यौ-अनागाम्
insulted, faultless

Daksha's wife Prasooti and other women remarked that this was the evil result of the public's lord Daksha's sin. Because he insulted the faultless daughter Satee even as the other daughters looked on.


यस्त्वन्तकाले व्युप्तजटाकलाप: स्वशूलसूच्यर्पितदिग्गजेन्द्र: ।

वितत्य नृत्यत्युदितास्त्रदोर्ध्वजानुच्चाट्टहासस्तनयित्नुभिन्नदिक् ॥१०॥


य:-तु-अन्त-काले
He (Who) indeed at the ending time
व्युप्त-जटा-कलाप:
throwing about the matted hair tuft
स्व-शूल-सूचि-
His trident's points
अर्पित-दिग्गज-इन्द्र:
piercing the directions' elephant lords
वितत्य नृत्य-उदित-
spreading when dancing holding
अस्त्र-दो:-ध्वजान्
weapons, the two arms as banners
उच्च-अट्टहास-
loud laughter
स्तनयित्नु-भिन्न-दिक्
thunder like tearing the directions

(Or) He, Who at the end of the time of the creation, throws about his matted hairs' tuft, pierces the elephant lords of the directions with the points of His trident, holding weapons, spreads out His arms as banners, and dances abundently, with loud laughter, renting the directions as though with thunder.


अमर्षयित्वा तमसह्यतेजसं मन्युप्लुतं दुर्विषहं भ्रुकुट्या ।

करालदंष्टाभिरुदस्यभागणं स्यात्स्वस्ति किं कोपयतो विधातु: ॥११॥


अमर्षयित्वा
full of anger
तम्-अमसह्य-तेजसम्
Him of unbearable splendour
मन्यु-प्लुतम्
anger overflowing
दुर्विषहम् भ्रुकुट्या
badly knitted eyebrows
कराल-दंष्टाभि:-
by fierce teeth
उदस्य-भागणम्
scattering the constellation groups
स्यात्-स्वस्ति किम्
will there peace be
कोपयत: विधातु:
enraged by Brahmaa

Him, of unbearable splendour, Who is full of anger overflowing, with badly knitted eyebrows, by His fierce teeth scattering the groups of constellations, even if is enraged by Brahmaa, will there be peace?


बह्वेवमुद्विग्नदृशोच्यमाने जनेन दक्षस्य मुहुर्महात्मन: ।

उत्पेतुरुत्पाततमा: सहस्रशो भयावहा दिवि भूमौ च पर्यक् ॥१२॥


बहु-एवम्-उद्विग्न-दृशा-
many such anxious eyed
उच्यमाने जनेन
said by the people
दक्षस्य मुहु:-महात्मन:
of Daksha, again and again, the great
उत्पेतु:-उत्पात-तमा:
arose ill omens the worst
सहस्रश: भयावहा:
thousand fearful
दिवि भूमौ च पर्यक्
in heavens earth and all around

As people said many such things with anxious eyes, there arose again and again the worst of ill omens, in thousands, fearful to even the great Daksha, in the heavens and earth and all around.


तावत्स रुद्रानुचरैर्मखो महान् नानायुधैर्वामनकैरुदायुधै: ।

पिङ्गै: पिशङ्गैर्मकरोदराननै: पर्याद्रवद्भिर्विदुरान्वरुध्यत ॥१३॥


तावत्-स: रुद्र-अनुचरै:-
just then, that Rudra's attendents by
मख: महान्
the sacrifice great
नाना-आयुधै:-
by various weapons
वामनकै:-उदायुधै:
by dwarfs, carrying weapons
पिङ्गै: पिशङ्गै:-
yellow brown
मकर-उदर-आननै:
by alligator stomached and faced
पर्याद्रवद्भि:-
running around
विदुर-अन्वरुध्यत
O Vidura! Surrounded

O Vidura! Just then, that Rudras's followers, yellow and brown, dwarfs, with stomach and face of the shape of alligators, with various uplifted weapons, running everywhere, surrounded that great sacrifice.


केचिद्बभञ्जु: प्राग्वंशं पत्नीशालां तथापरे ।

सद आग्नीध्रशालां च तद्विहारं महानसम् ॥१४॥


केचित्-बभञ्जु:
some of them destroyed
प्राग्वंशम्
the front beams
पत्नी-शालाम् तथा-अपरे
the wives' quarters and others
सद आग्नीध्र-शालाम्
the hall, the fire enlightening materials' chamber
तत्-विहारम् महानसम्
his house, and the big kitchen

Some of the followers destroyed the front beams, and the others destroyed the quarters of the wives, the hall, the chamber where the sacrificial materials are stored, his house and the big kitchen.


रुरुजुर्यज्ञपात्राणि तथैकेऽग्नीननाशयन् ।

कुण्डेष्वमूत्रयन् केचिद्विभिदुर्वेदिमेखला: ॥१५॥


रुरुजु:-यज्ञ-पात्राणि
broke the sacrifice vessels
तथा-एके-
and some
अग्नीन्-अनाशयन्
the fires extinguished
कुण्डेषु-मूत्रयन्
in the pits urinated
केचित्-बिभिदु:-
some broke
वेदि-मेखला:
the (sacrifice) dais threads

Some broke the sacrificial vessels, some extinguished the fire, others, urinated in the sacrifice pits, and yet others broke the threads of the sacrifice dias.


अबाधन्त मुनीनन्य एके पत्नीरतर्जयन् ।

अपरे जगृहुर्देवान् प्रत्यासन्नान् पलायितान् ॥१६॥


अबाधन्त मुनीन्-अन्य
tied the sages others
एके पत्नी:-अतर्जयन्
one the wives threatened
अपरे जगृहु:-देवान्
yet others caught hold of the gods
प्रत्यासन्नान् पलायितान्
sitting, fleeing

Some others tied the sages, and threatened the wives, yet others caught hold of the gods some of whom were sitting and some of whom were fleeing.


भृगुं बबन्ध मणिमान् वीरभद्र: प्रजापतिम् ।

चण्डीश: पूषणं देवं भगं नन्दीश्वरोऽग्रहीत् ॥१७॥


भृगुम् बबन्ध मणिमान्
Bhrigu bound Maniman
वीरभद्र: प्रजापतिम्
Veerabhadra (bound) Prajaapati (Daksha)
चण्डीश: पूषणं देवम्
Chandeesha (tied) Poosha, the god
भगम् नन्दीश्वर:-अग्रहीत्
Bhaga, Nandeeshvara seized

Manimaan bound Bhrigu, Veerabhadra bound Prajaapati Daksha, Chandeesha tied the god Poosha, and Nandeeshwara siezed Bhaga.


सर्व एवर्त्विजो दृष्ट्वा सदस्या: सदिवौकस: ।

तैरर्द्यमाना: सुभृशं ग्रावभिर्नैकधाद्रवन् ॥१८॥


सर्व एव-ऋत्विज: दृष्ट्वा
all the officiating priests seeing
सदस्या: स-दिवौकस:
the members, with the heavenly bodies
तै:-अर्द्यमाना: सुभृशम्
by them being pestered badly
ग्रावभि:-न-एकधा-द्रवन्
by stones, not in one direction ran

Seeing this, and being badly pestered with stones, all the officiating priests, the members, the heavenly bodies, ran in all directions.


जुह्वत: स्रुवहस्तस्य श्मश्रूणि भगवान् भव: ।

भृगोर्लुलुञ्चे सदसि योऽहसच्छ्मश्रु दर्श्यन् ॥१९॥


जुह्वत: स्रुव-हस्तस्य
(as he was) pouring oblation, the ladle in hand
भगवान् भव:
Lord Bhava (Shiva's part)
भृगो:-लुलुञ्चे
Bhrigu's pulled out
सदसि य:-अहसत्-
in the assembly who had laughed
श्मश्रु दर्शयन्
moustache showing

As Bhrigu was pouring oblation into the sacrificial fire, with ladel in hand, Lord Bhava, Veerabhadra, pulled out his moustache and beard, because he had laughed at Shiva in the assembly showing his moustache.


भगस्य नेत्रे भगवान् पातितस्य रुषा भुवि।

उज्जहार् सद:स्थोऽक्ष्णा य: शपन्तमसूसुचत् ॥२०॥


भगस्य नेत्रे भगवान्
Bhaga's two eyes, the lord (Veerabhadra)
पातितस्य रुषा भुवि
flinging (on the ground), in anger on the ground,
उज्जहार् सद:स्थ:-
pulled out, seated in the assembly
अक्ष्णा य: शपन्तम्-असूसुचत्
by eyes who, as he cursed (to Daksha) had signed

The lord Veerabhadra, flung Bhaga on the ground and pulled out his two eyes, because by those eyes he had signed Daksha as he cursed.


पूष्णश्चापातयद्दन्तान् कालिङ्गस्य यथा बल: ।

शप्यमाने गरिमणि योऽहसद्दर्शयन्दत: ॥ २१॥


पूष्ण:-च-अपातयत्-दन्तान्
of Poosha, knocked down the teeth
कालिङ्गस्य यथा बल:
of Kalinga (king), as Balaraama (had done)
शप्यमाने गरिमणि
when being slighted (by Daksha) Shiva
य:-अहसत्-दर्शन्-दत:
who laughed showing his teeth

Virabhadra knocked the teeth of Pooshaa, just as Balaraam had knocked down the teeth of king of Kalinga, because he had laughed when Shiva was slighted by Daksha.


आक्रम्योरसि दक्षस्य शितधारेण हेतिना।

छिन्दन्नपि तदुद्धर्तुं नाशक्नोत् त्र्यम्बकस्तदा ॥२२॥


आक्रम्य-उरसि दक्षस्य
attacking on the chest of Daksha
शित-धारेण हेतिना
by sharp edged sword
छिन्दन्-अपि
cutting also
तत्-उद्धर्तुम्
that to cut off
न-अशक्नोत्
was not able
त्र्यम्बक:-तदा
Veerabhadra then

Then Veerabhadra attacked Daksha on the chest and tried to cut off his head with a sharp edged sword, but he failed to sever it.


शस्त्रैरस्त्रान्वितैरेवमनिर्भिन्नत्वचं हर: ।

विस्मयं परमापन्नो दध्यौ पशुपतिश्चिरम् ॥२३॥


शस्त्रै:-अस्त्रान्वितै:-
by weapons, by missile
एवम्-अनिर्भिन्न-
thus unpiercing
त्वचम् हर:
skin, Veerabhadra
विस्मयम् परम-आपन्न:
wonder great struck
दध्यौ पशुपति:-चिरम्
pondered the lord of beings, for long

Veerabhadra saw that Daksha's skin was non-pierceable, by weapons or by missile, and he was greatly wonder struck and pondered on the lord of beings, for long.


दृष्ट्वा संज्ञपनं योगं पशूनां स पतिर्मखे ।

यजमानपशो: कस्य कायात्तेनाहरच्छिर: ॥२४॥


दृष्ट्वा संज्ञपनम् योगम्
observing, the slaughtering method
पशूनाम् स: पति:-मखे
of the animals, that Veerabhadra in the sacrifice
यजमान पशो: कस्य
of the sacrificer animal Daksha
कायात्-तेन-अहरत्-शिर:
from body by that (method), severed the head

Observing the method in which the animals of the sacrifice were being slaughtered, Veerabhadra severed the head from the body of the sacrificer animal Daksha.


साधुवादस्तदा तेषां कर्म तत्तस्य शंसताम् ।

भूतप्रेतपिशाचानामन्येषां तद्विपर्यय: ॥२५॥


साधुवाद:-तदा तेषाम् कर्म
applaud arose then, their doings
तत्-तस्य शंसताम्
that of his praising
भूत-प्रेत-पिशाचानाम-
the ghosts, spirits and fiends
अन्येषाम् तत्-विपर्यय:
the others its opposite

From them, the ghosts, spirits and fiends arose an applaude, praising that act of his, where as from the others, Daksha's people, arose an outcry against it.


जुहावैतच्छिरस्तस्मिन्दक्षिणाग्नावमर्षित: ।

तद्देवयजनं दग्ध्वा प्रातिष्ठत् गुह्यकालयम् ॥२६॥


जुहाव-एतत्-शिर:-तस्मिन्-
threw this head in that
दक्षिण-अग्नौ-अमर्षित:
Dakshina fire, in anger
तत्-देव-यजनम्
that god's sacrifice
दग्ध्वा प्रातिष्ठत्
burning, proceeded to
गुह्यकालयम्
Kailaash mountain

He, in anger, threw that head into the Dakshina fire, burnt the gods' sacrificial edifice, and proceeded to Kailaasha mountain.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे दक्षयक्षविध्वंसो नाम पञ्चमोऽध्याय: ॥५॥


Thus ends the fifth discourse entitled 'The Destruction of Daksha's sacrifice' in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
