मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
अथ देवगणा: सर्वे रुद्रानीकै: पराजिता: ।

शूलपट्टिशनिस्त्रिंशगदापरिघमुद्गरै: ॥१॥


अथ देव-गणा: सर्वे
then, the gods hosts all
रुद्र-अनीकै: पराजिता:
by Rudra's armies defeated
शूल-पट्टिश-निस्त्रिंश-
by tridents, spears, swords,
गदा-परिघ-मुद्गरै:
maces, clubs and mallets

Then, all the hosts of gods were defeated by the armies of Rudra, by tridents, spears, swords, maces, clibs and mallets.


संछिन्नभिन्नसर्वाङ्गा: सर्त्विक्सभ्या भयाकुला: ।

स्वयम्भुवे नमस्कृत्य कार्त्स्न्येनैतन्न्यवेदयन् ॥२॥


संछिन्न-भिन्न-
broken and chopped
सर्व-अङ्गा:
all limbs
स-ऋत्विक्-सभ्या:
with the (sacrifice) priests, and assistants
भय-आकुला:
with fear overcome
स्वयम्भुवे नमस्कृत्य
to Brahmaa, bowing
कार्त्स्न्येन-

एतत्-न्यवेदयन्
this narrated

The sacrifice conducting priests and their assistents, had all their limbs broken and chopped off. They went to Brahmaa and bowing down to Him narrated all this in detail.


उपलभ्य पुरैवैतद्भगवानब्जसम्भव: ।

नारायणश्च विश्वात्मा न कस्याध्वरमीयतु: ॥३॥


उपलभ्य पुरा-एव-एतत्-
knowing before hand only this
भगवान्-अब्ज-सम्भव:
the lord of lotus born
नारायण:-च विश्वात्मा
Naaraayana and the universe Soul
न कस्य-अध्वरम्-ईयतु:
did not Daksha's sacrifice attend

The lotus born lord Brahmaa and the universe Soul, Naaraayana, knew of this beforehand, so they did not attend Daksha's sacrifice.


तदाकर्ण्य विभु: प्राह तेजीयसि कृतागसि ।

क्षेमाय तत्र सा भूयान्न प्रायेण बुभूषताम् ॥४॥


तत्-आकर्ण्य विभु: प्राह
that hearing, Brahmaa said
तेजीयसि कृत-आगसि
by the powerful, done offence
क्षेमाय तत्र सा भूयात्-न
welfare there, that happens does not
प्रायेण बुभूषताम्
mostly to be revengeful

On hearing that, Brahmaa said, 'Mostly it happens that, when the powerful have done offence, it does not bring welfare to be revengeful.


अथापि यूयं कृतकिल्बिषा भवं ये बर्हिषो भागभाजं परादु: ।

प्रसादयध्वं परिशुद्धचेतसा क्षिप्रप्रसादं प्रगृहीताङ्घ्रिपद्मम् ॥५॥


अथ-अपि यूयम्
however you all
कृत-किल्बिषा:
have sinned
भवम् ये बर्हिष:
(against) Shiva, in that, in the sacrifice,
भाग-भाजम् परादु:
deserving of share, did not give
प्रसादयध्वम् परिशुद्ध-चेतसा
please Him by pure mind
क्षिप्र-प्रसादम्
(who is) soon pleased
प्रगृहीत-अङ्घ्रि-पद्मम्
clasping (His) feet lotuses

You all have sinned against Shiva, in that, He deserving a share in the sacrifice, you did not give it to Him. However, with pure minds, go and please Him by clasping His lotus feet because, He is soon pleased.


आशासाना जीवितमध्वरस्य लोक: सपाल: कुपिते न यस्मिन् ।

तमाशु देवं प्रियया विहीनं क्षमापयध्वं हृदि विद्धं दुरुक्तै: ॥६॥


आशासाना: जीवितम्-अध्वरस्य
(you all) hoping to revive the sacrifice
लोक: सपाल:
the world and the (presiding) deities
कुपिते न यस्मिन्
being angry of whom
तम्-आशु देवम्
Him soon the lord
प्रियया विहीनम्
of beloved deprived
क्षमापयध्वम्
forgiveness seek
हृदि विद्धम् दुरुक्तै:
in heart pinched by malicious words

If all of you are hoping to revive the sacrifice, soon go and seek forgiveness of the Lord who being angry, the worlds with the presiding deities can not survive. He is pinched in the heart by malicious words and has also lost His beloved wife.


नाहं न यज्ञो न च यूयमन्ये ये देहभाजो मुनयश्च तत्त्वम् ।

विदु: प्रमाणं बलवीर्ययोर्वा यस्यात्मतन्त्रस्य क उपायं विधित्सेत् ॥७॥


न-अहम् न यज्ञ:
not me, not Yagya
न च यूयम्-अन्ये ये
not and you all, other those
देह-भाज: मुनय:-च
embodied beings, sages and
तत्त्वम् विदु: प्रमाणम्
true nature know, extent
बल-वीर्ययो:-वा
of power and strength or
यस्य-आत्मतन्त्रस्य
whose self-dependent's
क: उपायम् विधित्सेत्
what is the way, who will know

Neither, I, nor the presiding diety of the sacrifices, nor you all or the other embodied beings and sages know the true nature or the extent of the strength and power of the Self-dependent Shiva. Who will, then, know the method of appeasing Him?


स इत्थमादिश्य सुरानजस्तै: सम्न्वित: पितृभि: सप्रजेशै: ।

ययौ स्वधिष्ण्यान्निलयं पुरद्विष: कैलासमद्रिप्रवरं प्रियं प्रभो: ॥८॥

He (Brahmaa) like this instructing

पितृभि: स-प्रजेशै:
by the Pitris and the Prajaapatis
ययौ स्व-धिष्ण्यात्-
went from His residence
निलयम् पुरद्विष:
to the abode of Tripuraari (Shiva)
कैलासम्-अद्रि-प्रवरम्
Kailaash, the mountain chief
प्रियम् प्रभो:
beloved of the Lord (Shiva)

Brahmaa instructed the gods in this manner and then accompanied by them, the Pitris and the Prajaapaties, went from His own residence to the chief of the mountains, Kailaash, the abode of Tripuraari, Shiva, which is dear to Lord Shiva.


जन्मौषधितपोमन्त्रयोगसिद्धैर्नरेतरै: ।

जुष्टं किन्नरगन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिर्वृतं सदा ॥९॥


जन्म-औषधि-तप:-मन्त्र-
from birth by herbs, austerities, mantras,
योग-सिद्धै:-
yoga, of supernatural powers
नर-इतरै: जुष्टम्
from men the others, crowded by
किन्नर-गन्धर्वै:-
Kinnaras, Gandharvas,
अप्सरोभि:-वृतम् सदा
Apsaras endowed with always

Mount Kailash is inhabitated by gods who are other than men and who are influenced from birth by the herbs of the mountain, by the austerities undertaken there, the mantras chanted there, the yoga practiced there, and are endowed with supernatural powers. The mountain is also crowded by Kinneras, Gandharvas, and Apsaras, who are always there.


नानामणिमयै: शृङ्गैर्नानाधातुविचित्रितै: ।

नानाद्रुमलतागुल्मैर्नानामृगगणावृतै: ॥१०॥


नाना-मणिमयै: शृङ्गै:-
by various gems studded peaks
नाना-धातु-विचित्रितै:
by various metals coloured
नाना-द्रुम-लता-गुल्मै:-
with various tree creepers hedge clusters
नाना-मृग-गण-आवृतै:
and with various animals kinds contained

The mountain contained of peaks and summits with various gems, coloured by various metals, vegitated of various trees, creepers and clusters of hedges, and various kinds of animals living there.


नानामलप्रस्रवणैर्नानाकन्दरसानुभि: ।

रमणं विहरन्तीनां रमणै: सिद्धयोषिताम् ॥११॥


नाना-अमल-प्रस्रवणै:-
various pure streams
नाना-कन्दर- सानुभि:
various caves and peaks
रमणम् विहरन्तीनाम्
pleasing, sporting women
रमणै: सिद्ध-योषिताम्
with spouses, of Siddhas the wives

The mountain contained of streams of pure water, caves and peaks, pleasing to the women, the wives of the Siddhas, who sported there with their spouses.


मयूरकेकाभिरुतं मदान्धालिविमूर्च्छितम् ।

प्लावितै रक्तकण्ठानां कूजितैश्च पतत्त्रिणाम् ॥१२॥


मयूर-केका-अभिरुतम्
of peacocks screams resonant
मद्-अन्ध-अलि-विमूर्च्छितम्
intoxication blinded bees humming
प्लावितै: रक्त-कण्ठानाम्
by cooing of red necked (cuckoos)
कूजितै:-च पतत्त्रिणाम्
and chirpings of the birds

The mountain was resonant with the screams of the peacocks, by the humming of intoxication blinded bees, by the cooings of the red necked cuckoos and the chirpings of the birds.


आह्वयन्तमिवोद्धस्तैर्द्विजान् कामदुघैर्द्रुमै: ।

व्रजन्तमिव मातङ्गैर्गृणन्तमिव निर्झरै: ॥१३॥


आह्वयन्तम्-इव-
beckoning as if
उद्धस्तै:-द्विजान्
by uplifted (arms) boughs, the birds
कामदुघै:-द्रुमै:
of wish-yielding trees
व्रजन्तम्-इव मातङ्गै:-
moving as if, like elephants
गृणन्तम्-इव निर्झरै:
and speaking as if by the streams

By the uplifted boughs of the wish-yielding trees, it looked as if the mountain was beckoning the birds. And by the moving of the waters of the streams, it looked as if the mountain was moving like an elephant and by the gurgling sound of the streams it felt as if the mountain was talking.


मन्दारै: पारिजातैश्च सरलैश्चोपशोभितम् ।

तमालै: शालतालैश्च कोविदारासनार्जुनै: ॥१४॥


मन्दारै: पारिजातै:-च
by Mandaara, Paarijaata,
सरलै:-च-उपशोभितम्
Sarala, and adorned
तमालै: शाल-तालै:-च
Tamaala, Shaala and Taala,
कोविदार-असन-अर्जुनै:
Kovidaara, Asan, and Arjuna

The mountain was adorned by Mandaara, Paarijaata, Sarla, Tamaala, Shaala, Taala, Kovidaara, Asana, and Arjuna celestial trees.


चूतै: कदम्बैर्नीपैश्च नागपुन्नागचम्पकै: ।

पाटलाशोकबकुलै: कुन्दै: कुरबकैरपि ॥१५॥


चूतै: कदम्बै:-नीपै:-च
by mangoes, Kadamba, Neepaa and
नाग-पुन्नाग-चम्पकै:
Naaga, Punnaaga, Champaka,
पाटल-अशोक-बकुलै:
Paataala, Ashoka, Bakula,
कुन्दै: कुरबकै:-अपि
Kunda and Kurbaka also

The mountain is also adorned by Mangoe trees, Kadamba, Neepa, Naaga, Punnaaga, Champaka, Paatala, Ashoka, Bakula, Kunda, and also Kurbaka trees.


स्वर्णार्णशतपत्रैश्च वररेणुकजातिभि: ।

कुब्जकैर्मल्लिकाभिश्च माधवीभिश्च मण्डितम् ॥१६॥


स्वर्ण-अर्ण-शतपत्रै:-च
golden trees of lotuses and
वररेणुक-जातिभि:
cardamom bearing (trees)
कुब्जकै:-मल्लिकाभि:-च
by Kurbaka, Mallikaa and
माधवीभि:-च मण्डितम्
Maadhavi decorated

The mountain was decorated by trees of golden lotuses, cardamom bearing trees, Kubjakas, Mallikas, and Maadhavis.


पनसोदुम्बराश्वत्थप्लक्षन्यग्रोधहिङ्गुभि: ।

भूर्जैरोषधिभि: पूगै राजपूगैश्च जम्बुभि: ॥१७॥


पनस-उदुम्बर-अश्वत्थ-
by Jack fruit trees, Udumbaras, Peepal,
प्लक्ष-न्यग्रोध-हिङ्गुभि:
Plaksha, Nyagrodha, Hingu,
भूर्जै:-ओषधिभि: पूगै:
Bhoorjas, herbs, Beetle nuts,
राजपूगै: च जम्बुभि:
Raaja Pooga, Jaamuna trees

It was beautiful by the Jackfruit trees, the Udumbaras, Peepal, Plakshas, Nyagrodha Hingu, Bhoorja, herbs, Beetle nuts, Raaja Pooga, Jaamuna and other trees.


खर्जूराम्रातकाम्राद्यै: प्रियालमधुकेङ्गुदै: ।

द्रुमजातिभिरन्यैश्च राजितं वेणुकीचकै: ॥१८॥


खर्जूर-आम्रातक-आम्र-आद्यै:
dates, peaches, mangoes and others
प्रियाल-मधुक-इङ्गुदै:
Priyaal, Mahua and Inguda,
द्रुम-जातिभि:-अन्यै:-च
trees of types various and
राजितम् वेणु-कीचकै:
beautified by hollow and solid bamboos

The mountain was beautified also by the date trees, peaches, mangoes, Priyaala, Mahua Inguda, and various other types of trees and also by hollow and solid bamboos.


कुमुदोत्पलकह्लारशतपत्रवनर्द्धिभि: ।

नलिनीषु कलं कूजत्खगवृन्दोपशोभितम् ॥१९॥


कुमुद-उत्पल-कह्लार-
Kumud, Utpala, Kalhaara,
शतपत्र-वन-ऋद्धिभि:
Shatapatra, forest's clusters
नलिनीषु कलम् कूजत्-
lotuses cooing, and chirping
खग-वृन्द-उपशोभितम्
birds clusters, beautified

The beauty of the mountain was enhanced by the charming cooing and chirping of the clusters of birds on the various lotuses, Kumuda, Utpala, Kalhaara, Shatapatra, clusters in the forest.


मृगै: शाखामृगै: क्रोडैर्मृगेन्द्रै:-ऋक्षशल्यकै: ।

गवयै: शरभैर्व्याघ्रै रुरुभिर्महिषादिभि: ॥२०॥


मृगै: शाखामृगै: क्रोडै:-
by deers, monkeys, boars,
मृगेन्द्रै:-ऋक्ष-शल्यकै:
lions, bears, porcupines,
गवयै: शरभै:-व्याघ्रै:
Gayals, Sharabhas, tigers,
रुरुभि:-महिष-आदिभि:
Rurus, buffaloes and others

The mountain was inhabited by deers, monkeys, boars, lions, bears, porcupines, Gayals, Sharabhas, tigers, Rurus, buffaloes etc.,.


कर्णान्त्रैकपदाश्वास्यैर्निर्जुष्टं वृकनाभिभि: ।

कदलीखण्डसंरुद्धनलिनीपुलिनश्रियम् ॥२१॥


कर्णान्त्र-एकपद-
Karnaantra, Ekapada,
अश्वास्यै:-निर्जुष्टम्
horse faced, infested
वृक-नाभिभि:
by wolves, musk-deer
कदली-खण्ड-संरुद्ध-
Banana tree clusters surrounded
नलिनी-पुलिन-श्रियम्
lotus ponds beautified

The mountain was infested by Karnaantra, Ekapada, horse faced animal, wolves and musk-deers. The clusters of Banana trees surrounded the lotus ponds and beautified it.


पर्यस्तं नन्दया सत्या: स्नानपुण्यतरोदया ।

विलोक्य भूतेशगिरिं विबुधा विस्मयं ययु: ।।२२॥


पर्यस्तम् नन्दया सत्या:
encircled by Nandaa (the river), by Sati's
स्नान-पुण्यतर-उदया
bathing hallowed waters
विलोक्य भूतेश-गिरिम्
seeing The Lord of ghosts' (Shiva's) mount (Kailaash)
विबुधा: विस्मयम् ययु:
the gods (were) wonder struck

It was encircled by the river Nandaa, whose waters were hallowed by the bathings of Sati. The gods were wonder struck when they saw the Mount Kailaash, the abode of Shiva, the Lord of the ghosts.


ददृशुस्तत्र ते रम्यामलकां नाम वै पुरीम् ।

वनं सौगन्धिकं चापि यत्र तन्नाम पङ्कजम् ॥२३॥


ददृशु:-तत्र ते रम्याम्म्-
saw there they, charming
अलकाम् नाम वै पुरीम्
Alakaa of name which the city
वनम् सौगन्धिकम् च-अपि
the forests Saugandhikam, and also
यत्र तत्-नाम पङ्कजम्
where, of that name (are) lotuses

They also saw there, the charming city named Alakaa, and the forest Saugandhikam, where there were lotuses of that name.


नन्दा चालकनन्दा च सरितौ बाह्यत: पुर: ।

तीर्थपादपदाम्भोजरजसातीव पावने ॥२४॥


नन्दा च-अलकनन्दा च
Nandaa and Alakanandaa and
सरितौ बाह्यत: पुर:
two rivers outside the city
तीर्थपाद-पद-अम्भोज-
of the Lord Vishnu's by feet lotus pollen
रजसा-अतीव पावने
dust, very much pure

Outside the city were flowing two rivers, Nandaa and Alaknandaa. They were rendered more pure by the pollen dust of the feet lotuses of Lord Vishnu.


ययो: सुरस्त्रिय: क्षत्तरवरुह्य स्वधिष्ण्यत: ।

क्रीडन्ति पुंस: सिञ्चन्त्यो विगाह्य रतिकर्शिता: ॥२५॥


ययो: सुर-स्त्रिय: क्षत्त:-
in which (rivers) the gods' wives, O Vidura!
अवरुह्य स्व-धिष्ण्यत:
descending from their abodes
क्रीडन्ति पुंस: सिञ्चन्त्य:
sport with the mates, splashing
विगाह्य रति-कर्शिता:
plunging, by amorous play exhausted

In the waters of which rivers, the wives of the gods descend from their abodes, with their mates, plunge and splash and are exhausted by emorous play.


ययोस्तत्स्नानविभ्रष्टनवकुङ्कुमपिञ्जरम् ।

वितृषोऽपि पिबन्त्यम्भ: पाययन्तो गजा गजी: ॥२६॥


ययो:-तत्-स्नान-विभ्रष्ट-
of which (rivers), by that bath washed
नव-कुङ्कुम-पिञ्जरम्
fresh saffron yellow
वितृष:-अपि पिबन्ति-अम्भ:
not thirsty even, drink the water
पाययन्त: गजा: गजी:
and make them drink the elephants and she elephants

The water of these rivers gets yellow, as the fresh saffron on the breasts of gods' wives is washed off who bathe in them. That water, the elephants drink, even though they are not thirsty and they also make their she elephants drink it.


तारहेममहारत्नविमानशतसंकुलाम् ।

जुष्टां पुण्यजनस्त्रीभिर्यथा खं सतडित्घनम् ॥२७॥


तार-हेम-महा-रत्न-
silver, gold, precious gems (made of)
विमान-शत-संकुलाम्
aerial cars hundreds of crowded by
जुष्टाम् पुण्य-जन-स्त्रीभि:-
used by meritorious peoples' wives
यथा खम् स-तडित्-घनम्
just as the firmament, with lightening and clouds

The city was crowded by hundreds of aerial cars made of silver, gold and precious gems, and used by the wives of meritorious men's wives. The city looked like the firmament overcast with lightening and clouds.


हित्वा यक्षेश्वरपुरीं वनं सौगन्धिकं च तत् ।

द्रुमै: कामदुघैर्हृद्यं चित्रमाल्यफलच्छदै: ॥२८॥


हित्वा यक्षेश्वर-पुरीम्
passing Kuber's city
वनम् सौगन्धिकम् च तत्
the forest Saugandhikam, and that
द्रुमै: कामदुघै:-हृद्यम्
by trees wish fulfilling pleasant,
चित्र-माल्य-फल-च्छदै:
various flowers, fruits laden

The gods, passing the city of Kubera, Alkaapuree, went to the forest Saugandhika, which was pleasant by the wish fulfilling trees, and where the trees were laden with various flowers and fruits.


रक्तकण्ठखगानीकस्वरमण्डितषट्पदम् ।

कलहंसकुलप्रेष्ठं खरदण्डजलाशयम् ॥२९॥


रक्तकण्ठ-खग-अनीक-
red throated cuckoos, birds many
स्वर-मण्डित-षट्पदम्
chirpings vibrant, with bees humming
कलहंस-कुल-प्रेष्ठम्
the royal swans' family's favourite
खर-दण्ड-जलाशयम्
clear watered lotus ponds

The place was resonating with the chirping of the red throated cuckoos and other birds and the humming of the bees. There were lotus ponds of clear water which are favourite of the royal swan family.


वनकुञ्जरसंघृष्टहरिचन्दनवायुना ।

अधि पुण्यजनस्त्रीणां मुहुरुन्मथयन्मन: ॥३०॥


वन-कुञ्जर-संघृष्ट-
by the wild elephants rubbed
हरि-चन्दन-वायुना
the Hari sandal (released smell)(containing) by the breeze
अधि पुण्य-जन-स्त्रीणाम्
specially the meritorious peoples' wives'
मुहु:-उन्मथयन्-मन:
again and again arousing the mind

The breeze wafting the scent from the Hari sandal trees, because of it being rubbed by the elephants, it again and again aroused the minds of the wives of the meritorious men.


वैदूर्यकृतसोपाना वाप्य उत्पलमालिनी: ।

प्राप्ता: किम्पुरुषैर्दृष्ट्वा त आराद्ददृशुर्वटम् ॥३१॥


वैदूर्य-कृत-सोपाना:
by cat's eye made the stairs
वाप्य: उत्पल-मालिनी:
the bathing pond (had) lotus blooms
प्राप्ता: किम्पुरुषै:-
reached there the Kimpurushas,
दृष्ट्वा ते आरात्-
saw they, near by
ददृशु:-वटम्
saw a Banyan tree

The Kimpurushas reached the bathing ponds which were covered with blooming lotuses and their stairs were made of cat's eye. Not far away they sighted a Banyan tree.


स योजनशतोत्सेध: पादोनविटपायत: ।

पर्यक्कृताचलच्छायो निर्नीडस्तापवर्जित: ॥३२॥


स: योजन-शत-उत्सेध:
it (the tree) was of eight hundred miles of height
पादोन-विटप-आयत:
six hundred miles of circumference
पर्यक्-कृत-अचल-छाय:
all around was permanent shade
निर्नीड:-ताप-वर्जित:
without nests, and heat devoid of

The hight of the tree was eight hundred miles, and its circumfrence was of six hundred miles. It had permanent shade around it. It had no nests on it and was devoid of heat.


तस्मिन्महायोगमये मुमुक्षुशरणे सुरा: ।

ददृशु: शिवमासीनं त्यक्तामर्षमिवान्तकम् ॥३३॥


तस्मिन्-महा-योगमये
under that (tree), great meditation inspiring
मुमुक्षु-शरणे सुरा: ददृशु:
liberation seeking (peoples') refuge, the gods saw
शिवम्-आसीनम् त्यक्त-अमर्षम्-
Shiva sitting, given up anger
इव-अन्तकम्
like Death

Under the great tree, that inspired meditation and was the refuge of liberation seekers, the gods saw Shiva seated, like Death free from anger.


सनन्दनाद्यैर्महासिद्धै: शान्तै: संशान्तविग्रहम् ।

उपास्यमानं सख्या च भर्त्रा गुह्यकरक्षसाम् ॥३४॥


सनन्दन-आद्यै:-

highly realized peaceful
संशान्त-विग्रहम्
(He) of most peaceful personality
उपास्यमानम् सख्या च
was worshipped by friend ( Kuber) and
भर्त्रा गुह्यक-रक्षसाम्
the lord of Yakshas and Raakshasas

He, Shiva of a most peaceful personality was being worshipped by Sananda and other highly realized and peaceful souls, and also by His friend Kubera, the Lord of Yakshas and Raakshasa.


विद्यातपोयोगपथमास्थितं तमधीश्वरम् ।

चरन्तं विश्वसुहृदं वात्सल्याल्लोकमङ्गलम् ॥३५॥


विद्या-तप:-योग-पथम्-
in knowledge, austerities, and Yoga paths
आस्थितम् तम्-अधीश्वरम्
engaged, Him, The Lord of all
चरन्तम् विश्व-सुहृदम्
practicing, the world's friend
वात्सल्यात्-लोक-मङ्गलम्
out of compassion, for the world's welfare

The gods saw the world's friend, Shiva engaged in the path of knowledge, austerities and Yoga, and practicing them out of compassion for the wellfare of the whole world.


लिङ्गं च तापसाभीष्टं भस्मदण्डजटाजिनम् ।

अङ्गेन संध्याभ्ररुचा चन्द्रलेखां च विभ्रतम् ॥३६॥

He was wearing marks which are dear to ascetics, like ashes, staff, matted hair, deer-skin, and on the body evening redish mica like pleasant hue and the moon crescent resplendent in the locks of the hair.


उपविष्टं दर्भमय्यां बृस्यां ब्रह्म सनातनम् ।

नारदाय प्रवोचन्तं पृच्छते शृण्वतां सताम् ॥३७॥


उपविष्टम् दर्भमय्याम् बृस्याम्
seated on (Kusha) grass made mat
ब्रह्म सनातनम्
on Brahma eternal
नारदाय प्रवोचन्तम्
for Naarada expounding
पृच्छते
being asked (by Naarada)
शृण्वताम् सताम्
as listened the noble (souls)

He was seated on a mat made of Kusha grass and was expounding the truth of eternal Brahman, to Naarada, being asked by him, as the the noble souls also listened.


कृत्वोरौ दक्षिणे सव्यं पादपद्मं च जानुनि ।

बाहुं प्रकोष्ठेऽक्षमालामासीनं तर्कमुद्रया ॥३८॥


कृत्त्वा-उरौ दक्षिणे
placing on thigh right
सव्यम् पाद-पद्मम्
left foot lotus
च जानुनि
and on the knees
बाहुम् प्रकोष्ठे-
on arm's wrist
अक्ष-मालाम्-
Aksha (beads) rosary
आसीनम् तर्क-मुद्रया
seated in Tarka Mudra

The gods saw Him seated with His left leg lotus placed on His right thigh, and on His knees, the arms' wrist having rosary of Aksha beads, maintaining the Tarka Mudra.


तं ब्रह्मनिर्वाणसमाधिमाश्रितं व्युपाश्रितं गिरिशं योगकक्षाम् ।

सलोकपाला मुनयो मनूनामाद्यं मनुं प्राञ्जलय: प्रणेमु: ॥३९॥


तम् ब्रह्म-निर्वाण-
to Him, in Brahma liberation
समाधिम्-आश्रितम्
meditation engaged
व्युपाश्रितम् गिरिशम्
supported by of mountain the Lord,
योग-कक्षाम्
the Yogis' (wooden) support
सलोकपाला: मुनय:
along with the protectors of the world, the sages
मनूनाम्-आद्यम् मनुम्
of the contemplators' the foremost contemplator
प्राञ्जलय: प्रणेमु:
with joined palms bowed

The sages, along with the protectors of the worlds, bowed to Shiva with joined palms. Shiva, the foremost contemplator of the contemplators was engaged in meditating on the liberation granting Brahman, supported by a wooden support used the contemplators, the Yogis, was engaged in meditating on the liberation granting Brahman.


स तूपलभ्यागतमात्मयोनिं सुरासुरेशैरभिवन्दिताङ्घ्रि: ।

उत्थाय चक्रे शिरसाभिवन्दनमर्हत्तम: कस्य यथैव विष्णु: ॥४०॥


स: तु-उपलभ्य-आगतम्-
He, indeed, seeing arrived
आत्मयोनिम्
Brahmaa,
सुर-असुर-ईशै:-
by the gods', demons and their lords
अभिवन्दित-अङ्घ्रि:
worshiped the feet
उत्थाय चक्रे
arising did
शिरसा-अभिवन्दनम्-
by head greetings
अर्हत्तम: कस्य
the most worthy of adoration, of Kashyapa,
यथा-एव विष्णु:
just as, Vishnu

He, Shiva, whose feet are worshipped by the gods and demons and their lords, indeed, seeing Brahmaa arrived, arose and greeted Him by bowing His head, even as the most revered Vishnu had bowed to Kashyapa.


तथापरे सिद्धगणा महर्षिभिर्ये वै समन्तादनु नीललोहितम् ।

नमस्कृत: प्राह शशाङ्कशेखरं कृतप्रणामं प्रहसन्निवात्मभू: ॥४१॥


तथा-अपरे सिद्ध-गणा:
and others, the Siddha groups
महर्षिभि:-ये वै समन्तात्-
with great sages those indeed, all around,
अनु नील-लोहितम्
then, to Brahmaa
नमस्कृत: प्राह
greeted said
शशाङ्क-शेखरम्
to (Shiva) with moon on His head
कृत-प्रणामम्
making Pranaam,
प्रहसन्-इव-आत्मभू:
smilingly as if Brahmaa

And then, the other hosts of Siddhas and great sages who sat around Shiva, greeted Brahmaa. Brahmaa smiling said to Shiva, Who was still joined palmed and was wearing the moon on His head, ….


ब्रह्मा-उवाच -
Brahmaa said -
जाने त्वामीशं विश्वस्य जगतो योनिबीजयो: ।

शक्ते: शिवस्य च परं यत्तद् ब्रह्म निरन्तरम् ॥४२॥


जाने त्वाम्-ईशम् विश्वस्य
(I) know You as the Lord of the world
जगत: योनि-बीजयो:
of the universe the womb and the seed
शक्ते: शिवस्य च परम्
of Shakti and Shiva and beyond
यत्-तद् ब्रह्म निरन्तरम्
which that Brahman eternal

I Know You to be the Lord of the world, the womb and the seed of the universe, and beyond Shakti and Shiva, that which is the eternal Brahman.


त्वमेव भगवन्नेतच्छिवशक्त्यो: सरूपयो: ।

विश्वं सृजसि पास्यत्सि क्रीडन्नूर्णपटो यथा ॥४३॥


त्वम्-एव भगवन्-
You only O Lord!
एतत्-शिव-शक्त्यो:
are this Shiva and Shakti
सरूपयो: विश्वम् सृजसि
in One form, the universe create
पासि-अत्सि
protect and swallow
क्रीडन्-ऊर्णपट: यथा
sporting spider like

O Lord! You only are Shiva and Shakti in one form and You only create preserve and swallow this universe sporting like a spider.


त्वमेव धर्मार्थदुधाभिपत्तये दक्षेण सूत्रेण ससर्जिथाध्वरम् ।

त्वयैव लोकेऽवसिताश्च सेतवो यान्ब्राह्मणा: श्रद्दधते धृतव्रता: ॥४४॥


त्वम्-एव धर्म-अर्थ-
You only, righteousness and wealth
दुधा-अभिपत्तये
yielding (Vedas) preservation
दक्षेण सूत्रेण
by Daksha's channel
ससर्जिथ-अध्वरम्
created sacrifice
त्वया-एव
by You only
लोके-अवसिता:-च
in the world was established and
सेतव: यान्-ब्राह्मणा:
proprieties, which the Braahmanas
श्रद्दधते धृतव्रता:
respect upholding vows

For the preservation of the Vedas which yield righteousness and wealth, You only through the chanell of Daksha created sacrifice. By you only proprieties were established in the world, which are respected by the vows upholding Braahmanas.


त्वं कर्मणां मङ्गल मङ्गलानां कर्तु: स्म लोकं तनुषे स्व: परं वा ।

अमङ्गलानां च तमिस्रमुल्बणं विपर्यय: केन तदेव कस्यचित् ॥४५॥


त्वम् कर्मणाम् मङ्गल
You of deeds, O Auspicious Lord!
मङ्गलानाम् कर्तु: स्म
of bliss performer indeed are
लोकम् तनुषे स्व: परम् वा
on people confer, heaven or liberation
अमङ्गलानाम् च
to the inauspicious and
तमिस्रम्-उल्बणम्
hell intense
विपर्यय: केन
opposite how
तत्-एव कस्यचित्
that alone of some

O Auspicious Lord! You only confer heaven or even liberation on people who perform auspicious deed, and also intense hell who perform inauspicious deeds. But how for some the same is opposite?


न वै सतां त्वच्चरणार्पितात्मनां भूतेषु सर्वेष्वभिपश्यतां तव ।

भूतानि चात्मन्यपृथग्दिदृक्षतां प्रायेण रोषोऽभिभवेद्यथा पशुम् ॥४६॥


न वै सताम् त्वत्-चरण-
not indeed to the noble (who), in Your feet
अर्पित-आत्मनाम् भूतेषु
surrendered mind, in beings
सर्वेषु-अभिपश्यताम् तव
all, behold Your
भूतानि च-आत्मनि-
beings and from self
अपृथक्-दिदृक्षताम्
non-different seeing
प्रायेण रोष:-अभिभवेत्-
generally, anger does overpower
यथा पशुम्
as to the ignorant

Generally, to the noble person, who has surrendered his mind to Your feet, who beholds You in all beings, and who see in all beings as not different from his own self, anger does not over power, as it does the ignorant person.


पृथग्धिय: कर्मदृशो दुराशया: परोदयेनार्पितहृद्रुजोऽनिशम् ।

परान् दुरुक्तैर्वितुदन्त्यरुन्तुदास्तान्मा वधीद्दैववधान् भवद्विध: ॥४७॥


पृथक्-धिय: कर्म-दृश:
the diverse minded, rituals observing
दुराशया: पर-उदयेन-
evil intentioned, of others' prosperity
अर्पित-हृद्-रुज:-अनिशम्
engaged, in heart burn, day and night
परान् दुरुक्तै:-
others by bad words
वितुदन्ति-अरुन्तुदा:-
pierce, the highly ignorant
तान्-मा वधीत्-
them may not kill
दैव-वधान् भवत्-विध:
by Providence killed Your like

Those who have diverse percieving minds, who are inclined to observing rituals, who have evil intentions, whose hearts burn, day and night because of the prosperity of others, those who pierce others by bad words, may they not be killed by exalted people like You, because they are already killed by Providence.


यस्मिन् यदा पुष्करनाभमायया दुरन्तया स्पृष्टधिय: पृथग्दृश: ।

कुर्वन्ति तत्र ह्यनुकम्पया कृपां न साधवो दैवबलात्कृते क्रमम् ॥४८॥


यस्मिन् यदा पुष्करनाभ-मायया
in which, when, by the Lord's Maayaa
दुरन्तया स्पृष्ट-धिय:
unfathomable, effected minds
पृथक्-दृश: कुर्वन्ति तत्र हि-
of diverse minded, extend there only
अनुकम्पया कृपाम् न साधव:
by compassion grace, do not pious souls
दैव-बलात्-कृते क्रमम्
by Providence power enabled situation

When and in a situation where a person who has a diverse mind, and is effected by the unfathomable Maayaa of the Lord, there only the pious souls, out of compassion, extend their grace, not when the person is effected by the power of Providence.


भवांस्तु पुंस: परमस्य मायया दुरन्तयास्पृष्टमति: समस्तदृक् ।

तया हतात्मस्वनुकर्मचेत: स्वनुग्रहं कर्तुमिहार्हसि प्रभो ॥४९॥


भवान्-तु पुंस: परमस्य
You indeed of The Person's Supreme
मायया दुरन्तया अस्पृष्ट-मति:
Maayaa unfathomable, (are) untouched minded
समस्त-दृक् तया हत-आत्मसु-
(and) omniscient, by that (Maayaa) struck selves
अनुकर्म-चेत: स्वनुग्रहम्
following ritual minded, your grace
कर्तुम्-इह-अर्हसि
to shower here are capable

You are omniscient and Your mind is untouched by the unfathomable Maayaa of the Supreme Person. On those who are struck by that Maayaa and so whose minds follow the rituals, You may, here shower Your grace.


कुर्वध्वरस्योद्धरणं हतस्य भोस्त्वयासमाप्तस्य मनो प्रजापते: ।

न यत्र भागं तव भागिनो ददु: कुयज्विनो येन मखो निनीयते ॥५०॥


कुरु-अध्वरस्य-उद्धरणम्
make the sacrifice revive
हतस्य भो:
disrupted O Lord!
त्वया-असमाप्तस्य
by you incomplete
मनो प्रजापते:
started by the lord of created beings
न यत्र भागम्
not where the share
तव भागिन: ददु:
yours claiming gave
कुयज्विन:
unwise priests
येन मख: निनीयते
because of which the sacrifice is fruitless

O Lord! The sacrifice started by the lord of created beings, Daksha, is incomplete, because it was disrupted by You, Who was not given the rightful claim of share by the unwise priests, so it is fruitless. Diegn to revive it.


जीवताद्यजमानोऽयं प्रपद्येताक्षिणी भग: ।

भृगो: श्मश्रूणि रोहन्तु पूष्णो दन्ताश्च पूर्ववत् ॥५१॥


जीवतात्-यजमान:-अयम्
may come to life the sacrificer (Daksha) this
प्रपद्ये-अक्षिणी भग:
may get eyes Bhaga
भृगो: श्मश्रूणि रोहन्तु
of Bhrigu the moustaches may grow
पूष्ण: दन्ता:-च पूर्व-वत्
Pooshaa's teeth and before like

May the sacrificer, Daksha, come back to life, Bhaga get the eyes, Bhrigu's moustaches grow, and Pooshaa's teeth become as before.


देवानां भग्नगात्राणामृत्विजां चायुधाश्मभि: ।

भवतानुगृहीतानामाशु मन्योऽस्त्वनातुरम् ॥५२॥


देवानाम् भग्न-गात्राणाम्-
of the gods, broken bodied
ऋत्विजाम् च-आयुध-अश्मभि:
of priests and by weapons stones
भवता-अनुगृहीतानाम्-
by You favoured
आशु मन्यो-अस्तु-अनातुरम्
soon O Rudra! may be non-troublesome

O Rudra! Favoured by You, may the bodies of the gods and priests soon be rendered non-troublesome, which are broken by weapons and stones.


एष ते रुद्र भागोऽस्तु यदुच्छिष्टोऽध्वरस्य वै ।

यज्ञस्ते रुद्रभागेन कल्पतामद्य यज्ञहन् ॥५३॥


एष: ते रुद्र भाग:-अस्तु
this of your O Rudra! share may be
यत्-उच्छिष्ट:-अध्वरस्य वै
that left over of sacrifice indeed
यज्ञ:-ते रुद्र-भागेन
sacrifice, by Your Rudra share
कल्पताम्-अद्य यज्ञहन्
may You complete today, O Destroyer of the Sacrifice

O Rudra! The left overs of the sacrifice may be Your share. O Destroyer of the Sacrifice! With Your share, may it be completed today.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे रुद्रसान्त्वनं नाम षष्ठ: अध्याय: समाप्त: ॥६॥


Thus ends the sixth discourse entitled 'The Appeasment of Rudra' in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
