मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
त एवमुत्सन्नभया उरुक्रमे कृतावनामा: प्रययुस्त्रिविष्टपम् ।
सहस्रशीर्षापि ततो गरुत्मता मधोर्वनं भृत्यदिदृक्षया गत: ॥१॥
ते एवम्-उत्सन्न-भया:
they, thus devoid of fear
उरुक्रमे कृत-अवनामा:
to The Lord performed bowing low
प्रययु:-त्रिविष्टपम्
went to the heaven
सहस्रशीर्षा-अपि
The Thousand headed (Lord) also
तत: गरुत्मता
from there on Garuda
मधोर्वनम्
to Madhuvana
भृत्य-दिदृक्षया गत:
the devotee longing to see went
The gods devoid of fear performed pranaama and bowed low to the Lord, and returned to heaven. The Thousand headed Lord also, longing to see His devotee, Dhruva, mounted Gaduda and went to Madhuvana.
स वै धिया योगविपाकतीव्रया हृत्पद्मकोशे स्फुरितं तडित्प्रभम् ।
तिरोहितं सहसैवोपलक्ष्य बहि:स्थितं तदवस्थं ददर्श ॥२॥
स: वै धिया
he (Dhruva) indeed by intellect
योग-विपाक-तीव्रया
(and) by concentration ripened sharpened
हृत्-पद्म-कोशे
in heart lotus's core
स्फुरितम् तडित्-प्रभम्
radiant lightening like
तिरोहितम् सहसा-एव-
disappeared suddenly also
उपलक्ष्य बहि:-स्थितम्
opening the eyes, outside standing
तत्-अवस्थम् ददर्श
in that form beheld
Dhruv whose intellect was sharpened by severe concentration, saw in the core of his heart lotus the radiant lightening like form disappear. On opening the eyes, he beheld the same form standing outside.
तद्दर्शनेनागतसाध्वस: क्षिताववन्दताङ्गं विनमय्य दण्डवत् ।
दृग्भ्यां प्रपश्यन् प्रपिबन्निवार्भकश्चुम्बन्निवास्येन भुजैरिवाश्लिषन् ॥३॥
तत्-दर्शनेन-
by that sight
आगत-साध्वस:
became awe-struck
क्षितौ-अववन्दत्-अङ्गम्
on the ground prostrated the body
विनमय्य दण्डवत्
lying log-like
दृग्भ्याम् प्रपश्यन्
by eyes gazing
प्रपिबन्-इव-अर्भक:-
drinking as if the child
चुम्बन्-इव-आस्येन
kissing as if by lips
भुजै:-इव-आश्लिषन्
with arms as if embracing
Seeing That sight, Dhruv was awe-struck. He prostrated by laying his body log-like on the ground. He gazed at Him as if drinking Him with the eyes, as if kissing Him by the lips and embracing Him with the arms.
स तं विवक्षन्तमतद्विदं हरिर्ज्ञात्वास्य च हृद्यवस्थित: ।
कृताञ्जलिं ब्रह्ममयेन कम्बुना पस्पर्श बालं कृपया कपोले ॥४॥
स: तम् विवक्षन्तम्-
He, him wanting to speak
अतत्-विदम्
not that knowing
हरि:- ज्ञात्वा-अस्य
Hari knowing his
च हृदि-अवस्थित:
and in heart enthroned
कृत-अञ्जलिम्
with joined palms
ब्रह्ममयेन कम्बुना
by the Veda's symbol the conch
पस्पर्श बालम्
touched the child
कृपया कपोले
graciously on the cheek
He, Hari, enthroned in the haerts of everyone, knowing him to be wanting to extol Him, and being unable to do so, standing with joined palms, graciously touched the child on the cheek with the symbol of the Vedas, His conch.
स वै तदैव प्रतिपादितां गिरं दैवीं परिज्ञातपरात्मनिर्णय: ।
तं भक्तिभावोऽभ्यगृणादसत्वरं परिश्रुतोरुश्रवसं ध्रुवक्षिति: ॥५॥
स: वै तत्-एव
he indeed then only
प्रतिपादिताम् गिरम् दैवीम्
infused with speech divine
परिज्ञात-परात्म-निर्णय:
realized The Supreme (and) self distinction
तम् भक्ति-भाव:-
Him with devotion fulfilled
अभ्यगृणात्-असत्वरम्
glorified for long
परिश्रुत-उरु-श्रवसम्
the well known great famed Lord
ध्रुव-क्षिति:
Dhruva (pole star) position
He, Dhruv, who was destined to ascend to the position of the pole star, indeed, then instantly was infused with divine speech, and realized the distinction of The Supreme Soul and the individual soul. He full of devotion, for long extolled The Lord whose great fame is well known.
ध्रुव उवाच -
Dhruva said -
योऽन्त: प्रविश्य मम वाचमिमां प्रसुप्तां संजीवयत्यखिलशक्तिधर: स्वधाम्ना ।
अन्यान्श्च हस्तचरणश्रवणत्वगादीन् प्राणान्नमो भगवते पुरुषाय तुभ्यम् ॥६॥
य:-अन्त: प्रविश्य
Who inside entering
मम वाचम्-इमाम् प्रसुप्ताम्
my speech this dormant
संजीवयति-अखिल-शक्तिधर:
awakens, All Potencies' Wielder!
स्वधाम्ना अन्यान्-च
by Your glory, others and
हस्त-चरण-श्रवण-
hand, feet, ear'
त्वक्-आदीन् प्राणान्-
skin etc., and life force
नमो भगवते
hail to The Lord
पुरुषाय तुभ्यम्
The glorious Person You
Hail to the Lord, The Glorious Person, You, Who by entering my inner self awakens this dormant speech of mine. O Wielder of All Potencies, the other organs, hands feet, ears, skin, life force etc., also are awakened, by Your glory.
एकस्त्वमेव भगवन्निदमात्मशक्त्या मायाख्ययोरुगुणया महदाद्यशेषम् ।
सृष्ट्वानुविश्य पुरुषस्तदसद्गुणेषु नानेव दारुषु विभावसुवद्विभासि ॥७॥
एक:-त्वम्-एव भगवन्-
Alone, You only O Lord!
इदम्-आत्म-शक्त्या
this by Your potency
माया-आख्यया-उरु-गुणया
Maayaa called, of countless Gunas
महत्-आदि-अशेषम्
Mahat and other (phenomena) endless
सृष्ट्वा-अनुविश्य पुरुष:-
create and enter as Controller
तत्-असत्-गुणेषु
in their illusory senses
नाना-इव दारुषु
different like wood
विभावसु-वत्-विभासि
fire like appear
Only You alone O Lord! By Your potency called Maaya, consisting of countless Gunas, create this Mahat and other endless phenomena, the universe, and enter in their illusory senses as Controller, appearing in different forms as fire appears different because of the shape of the wood it burns.
त्वद्दत्तया वयुनयेदमचष्ट विश्वं सुप्तप्रबुद्ध इव नाथ भवत्प्रपन्न: ।
तस्यापवर्ग्यशरणं तव पादमूलं विस्मर्यते कृतविदा कथमार्तबन्धो ॥८॥
त्वत्-दत्तया वयुनया-
by You conferred vision
इदम्-अचष्ट विश्वम्
this saw the world
सुप्त-प्रबुद्ध इव
from sleep woken up like
नाथ भवत्-प्रपन्न:
O Lord! Your refuge seeker (Brahmaa)
तस्य-अपवर्ग्य-शरणम्
that (feet) of liberated souls the resort
तव पाद-मूलम्
Your feet soles
विस्मर्यते कृत-विदा
are forgotten by the grateful
कथम्-आर्त-बन्धो
how O of the afflicted The friend!
O Lord! Your refuge seeker Brahmaa, by the vision conferred by You, viewed this universe as if woken up from sleep. The soles of Your feet, which are the resort of the liberated souls, how can they be forgotten by the grateful people who have gained from Your benevolence.
नूनं विमुष्टमतयस्तव मायया ते ये त्वां भवाप्ययविमोक्षणमन्यहेतो: ।
अर्चन्ति कल्पकतरुं कुणपोपभोग्यमिच्छन्ति यत्स्पर्शजं निरयेऽपि नृणाम् ॥९॥
नूनम् विमुष्ट-मतय:-
certainly, with thrashed intellect
तव मायया ते ये
by Your Maaya they who
त्वाम् भव-अप्यय-विमोक्षणम्-
You, The birth and death Liberator
अन्य-हेतो: अर्चन्ति
for other purposes worship
कल्पक-तरुम्
The Wish yielding tree
कुणप-उपभोग्यम्-इच्छन्ति
by the body (corpse) enjoyable hanker for
यत्-स्पर्शजम्
that sense pleasure
निरये-अपि नृणाम्
in hell also for people
Certainly, their intellect has been thrashed by Your Mayaa, who worship You, Who is the liberator from birth and death, and also is the wish yielding tree, for other purposes. They hanker for the sense pleasures which are enjoyable by the corpse like body of the living beings, and which can be had even in hell.
या निर्वृतिस्तनुभृतां तव पादपद्म ध्यानाद्भवज्जनकथाश्रवणेन वा स्यात् ।
सा ब्रह्मणि स्वमहिमन्यपि नाथ मा भूत् किं त्वन्तकासिलुलितात्पततां विमानात्॥१०॥
या निर्वृति:-तनुभृताम्
the bliss for the human beings
तव पाद-पद्म ध्यानात्-
Your foot lotus by worshipping
भवत्-जन-कथा
Your devotees stories
श्रवणेन वा स्यात्
by hearing or comes
सा ब्रह्मणि
that in Brahman (Who is)
स्व-महिमनि-अपि
self bliss also
नाथ मा भूत्
O Lord! Is not there
किम् तु-अन्तक-
what then (of those) by death
असि-लुलितात्-
sward shattered
पतताम् विमानात्
falling from Ariel cars
O Lord! The bliss which the human beings enjoy by meditating on Your lotus feet or by hearing the stories of Your devotees, is not got even in blissful Brahman. How is bliss possible for those who are hurled from the ariel cars smashed by the sword of Death?
भक्तिं मुहु: प्रवहतां त्वयि मे प्रसङ्गो भूयादनन्त महताममलाशयानाम् ।
येनाञ्जसोल्बणमुरुव्यसनं भवाब्धिं नेष्ये भवद्गुणकथामृतपानमत्त: ॥११॥
भक्तिम् मुहु: प्रवहताम्
devotion constantly flowing
त्वयि मे प्रसङ्ग: भूयात्-
to You, my company may be
अनन्त
O Infinite Lord!
महताम्-अमल-आशयानाम्
With exalted and pure hearted (people)
येन-अञ्जसा-
by which easily
उल्बणम्-उरु-व्यसनम्
terrible many perils (consisting)
भव-अब्धिम् नेष्ये
the worldly ocean cross
भवत्-गुण-कथा-
Your virtuous stories
अमृत-पान-मत्त:
nectar imbibing drunk
O Infinite Lord! May my company be with the exalted souls whose devotion is constantly flowing towards You and who have a pure heart. Being in such company I will easily cross the terrible worldly ocean full of perils, and will be drunk by imbibing the nectar of Your virtuous stories.
ते न स्मरन्त्यतितरां प्रियमीश मर्त्यं ये चान्वद: सुतसुहृद्-गृहवित्तदारा: ।
ये त्वब्जनाभ भवदीयपदारविन्दसौगन्ध्यलुब्धहृदयेषु कृतप्रसङ्गा: ॥१२॥
ते न स्मरन्ति-
they do not remember
अति-तराम् प्रियम्-ईश
very much dear, O Lord!
मर्त्यम् ये च-अन्वद:
the body, who and relatives
सुत-सुहृद्-गृह-वित्त-दारा:
son, friend, house, wealth, wife,
ये तु-अब्जनाभ
who indeed, O Lotus navel Lord!
भवदीय-पद-अरविन्द-
Your feet lotus
सौगन्ध्य-लुब्ध-हृदयेषु-
fragrance enamoured hearts
कृत-प्रसङ्गा:
having cultivated fellowship
O Lord! They do not remember their very much dear bodies and relatives, son, friend, house, wealth, or wife, O Lotus navel Lord! Who have cultivated fellowship with those whose hearts are enamoured by the fragrance of Your lotus feet.
तिर्यङ्नगद्विजसरीसृपदेवदैत्यमर्त्यादिभि: परिचितं सदसद्विशेषम् ।
रूपं स्थविष्ठमज ते महदाद्यनेकं नात: परं परम वेद्मि न यत्र वाद: ॥१३॥
तिर्यङ्-नग-द्विज-सरीसृप-
by animals, trees, mountains, birds, reptiles,
देव-दैत्य-मर्त्य-आदिभि: परिचितम्
gods, demons, human beings and others consisting of
सत्-असत्-विशेषम्
subtle and gross defined
रूपम् स्थविष्ठम्-अज ते
form cosmic, O Birth less One! Your
महत्-आदि-अनेकम्
Mahat etc., many
न-अत: परम् परम
not this beyond, O Supreme One!
वेद्मि न यत्र वाद:
I know, is not where speech
O Birthless One! I know of Your cosmic form only, which is defined by many causes and subtle and gross elements, the Mahat-tatva etc., by which this whole world is full of animals, trees, mountains, birds, reptiles, gods, demons, and human beings, I do not know beyond this, where even the speech is not.
कल्पान्त एतदखिलं जठरेण गृह्णन् शेते पुमान् स्वदृगनन्तसखस्तदङ्के ।
यन्नाभिसिन्धुरुहकाञ्चनलोकपद्मगर्भे द्युमान् भगवते प्रणतोऽस्मि तस्मै ॥१४॥
कल्पान्ते एतत्-अखिलम्
at the cycle's end this entire
जठरेण गृह्णन् शेते
in the belly taking repose
पुमान् स्व-दृक्-
The Supreme Person in own (inner) eye
अनन्त-सख:-
(with) (Shesha) Ananta the friend
तत्-अङ्के
on his lap
यत्-नाभि-सिन्धु-
Whose from the navel ocean
रुह-काञ्चन-लोक-
springing golden universe
पद्म-गर्भे द्युमान्
lotus core shining (Brahmaa)
भगवते प्रणत:-अस्मि तस्मै
to Lord prostrated I am for Him
The Supreme Person, Who at the end of the time cycle, takes in His belly this entire cosmos, with His inner eyes reposes on the only friend Ananta (Shesha's) lap, to That Lord I prostate, from Whose navel ocean springs the lotus, in the core of which shone Brahmaa.
त्वं नित्यमुक्तपरिशुद्धविबुद्ध आत्मा कूटस्थ आदिपुरुषो भगवांस्त्र्यधीश: ।
यद्-बुद्ध्यवस्थितिमखण्डितया स्वदृष्ट्या द्रष्टा स्थितावधिमखो व्यतिरिक्त आस्से ॥१५॥
त्वम् नित्य-मुक्त-परिशुद्ध-
You (are) eternally free, absolutely pure,
विबुद्ध आत्मा कूटस्थ
all-knowing Self, immutable
आदि-पुरुष: भगवन्-त्र्यधीश:
the Primal Person, Controller of the three Gunas
यद्-बुद्धि-अवस्थितिम्-
Who by intellect's states
अखण्डितया स्वदृष्ट्या द्रष्टा
unobstructed, by Own vision witness
स्थितौ-अधिमख:
for the preservation as Sacrifice (Vishnu)
व्यतिरिक्त: आस्से
distinct (from Jiva) appear
You are eternally free, the absolutely pure, all-knowing Self, the immutable Primal Person, the Controller of the three Gunas. You, by Your own unobstructed vision witness all the states of the mind, and as distinct from the jiva, and for preservation, appear as Sacrifice, Vishnu.
यस्मिन् विरुद्धगतयो ह्यनिशं पतन्ति विद्यादयो विविधशक्तय आनुपूर्व्यात् ।
तद्ब्रह्म विश्वभवमेकमनन्तमाद्यमानन्दमात्रमविकारमहं प्रपद्ये ॥१६॥
यस्मिन् विरुद्ध-गतय:
in Whom opposite natured
हि-अनिशम् पतन्ति
indeed always appear
विद्या-आदय:
Vidya (omniscience) and others
विविध-शक्तय: आनुपूर्व्यात्
many potencies, in succession
तत्-ब्रह्म विश्व-भवम्-
in that Brahman, the universe cause
एकम्-अनन्तम्-
singular, indivisible
आद्यम्-आनन्द-मात्रम्-
the endless, bliss alone
अविकारम्-अहम् प्रपद्ये
changeless, I seek refuge
In Whom indeed, the opposite natured many potencies always appear, like Vidya, omniscience etc., in succession, Who is the singular cause of the universe, the indivisible, the endless, changeless, and bliss alone, in That Brahman, I seek refuge.
सत्याशिषो हि भगवंस्तव पादपद्ममाशीस्तथानुभजत: पुरुषार्थमूर्ते ।
अप्येवमर्य भगवान् परिपाति दीनान् वाश्रेव वत्सकमनुग्रहकातरोऽस्मान् ॥१७॥
सत्य-आशिष: हि
true blessings (granting) definitely
भगवन्-तव पाद-पद्मम्-
Lord Your feet lotus (are)
आशी:-तथा-अनुभजत:
desirous (people) likewise worship
पुरुषार्थ-मूर्ते अपि-एवम्-
O Beatitude embodiment! even then
अर्य भगवान् परिपाति दीनान्
O Masterful Lord! foster the wretched
वाश्रा-इव वत्सकम्-
newly calved (cow) like the calf
अनुग्रह-कातर:-अस्मान्
in grace granting eager, to us
O Lord! Your lotus feet are true blessings granting, so the desierous people worship you likewise. O Beatitude embodiment! O Masterful Lord! You are eager in granting grace and so you foster even the wretched like us, just as a newly calved cow cares for the calf.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
अथाभिष्टुत एवं वै सत्संकल्पेन धीमता ।
भृत्यानुरक्तो भगवान् प्रतिनन्द्येदमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
अथ-अभिष्टुत: एवम् वै
then, exalted, thus indeed
सत्संकल्पेन धीमता
by noble purposed, sage like (Dhruva)
भृत्य-अनुरक्त: भगवान्
devotees enamorous Lord
प्रतिनन्द्य-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
pleased, this said
Then, thus extolled by the noble purposed sage like Dhruv, the devotees' enamorous Lord was pleased and said this …
श्री भगवान् उवाच -
The Lord said -
वेदाहं ते व्यवसितं हृदि राजन्यबालक।
तत्प्रयच्छामि भद्रं ते दुरापमपि सुव्रत ॥१९॥
वेद-अहम् ते व्यवसितम्
know I your desire
हृदि राजन्यबालक
of the heart, O Prince!
तत्-प्रयच्छामि भद्रम् ते
that (I) grant, May you be blessed
दुरापम्-अपि सुव्रत
difficult though, O Commendable vow undertaker!
O Prince! O Commendable vow undertaker! I know the cherished desire of your heart. I grant it to you though it is difficult to attain.
नान्यैरधिष्ठितं भद्र यद्-भ्राजिष्णु ध्रुवक्षिति ।
यत्र ग्रहर्क्षताराणां ज्योतिषां चक्रमाहितम् ॥२०॥
न-अन्यै:-अधिष्ठितम् भद्र
not by others attained, O Blessed One!
यद्-भ्राजिष्णु ध्रुवक्षिति
that effulgent and lasting abode
यत्र ग्रह-ऋक्ष-ताराणाम्
where, the planets, lunar mansions and stars
ज्योतिषाम् चक्रम्-आहितम्
the stellar sphere comprising of
O Blessed One! It is the abode which has not been attained by others, which is effulgent and lasting where the planets, lunar mansions and stars comprise as the stellar sphere.
मेढ्यां गोचक्रवत्स्थास्नु परस्तात्कल्पवासिनाम् ।
धर्मोऽग्नि: कश्यप: शुक्रो मुनयो ये वनौकस: ।
चरन्ति दक्षिणीकृत्य भ्रमन्तो यत्सतारका: ॥२१॥
मेढ्याम् गोचक्रवत्-
to a post (bound), oxen going round
स्थास्नु परस्तात्-
fixed beyond
कल्प-वासिनाम्
the Kalpa survivors
धर्म:-अग्नि: कश्यप: शुक्र:
Dharma, Agni, Kashyapa, Shukra
मुनय: ये वनौकस:
and sages who live in forests
चरन्ति दक्षिणीकृत्य
go about keeping to the right
भ्रमन्त: यत्-सतारका:
circumbulating, whom with (their) stars
It is fixed like the post, bound to which, like the oxen goes round a post, those who are the survivors beyond the end of the Kalpa, such as Dharma, Agni, Kashyapa, Shukra, and the sages who live in the forests, go circumbalting around whom, along with their respective stars, keeping it to their right side.
प्रस्थिते तु वनं पित्रा दत्त्वा गां धर्मसंश्रय: ।
षट्त्रिंशद्वर्षसाहस्रं रक्षिताव्याहतेन्द्रिय: ॥२२॥
प्रस्थिते तु वनम्
departed, indeed to the forest
पित्रा दत्त्वा गाम्
by father given the earth
धर्म-संश्रय:
by righteousness supported
षट्त्रिंशत्-वर्ष-साहस्रम्
six-thirty years thousand
रक्षिता-अव्याहत-इन्द्रिय:
will rule, (with) undiminished senses
You will rule this earth handed over to you by your father when he retires to the forest, for thirty six thousand years, supported by righteousness and with unimpaired senses.
त्वद्भ्रातर्युत्तमे नष्टे मृगयायां तु तन्मना: ।
अन्वेषन्ती वनं माता दावाग्निं सा प्रवेक्ष्यति ॥२३॥
त्वत्-भ्रातरि-
as your brother
उत्तमे नष्टे मृगयायाम्
Uttama is killed while hunting
तु तत्-मना:
indeed him thinking
अन्वेषन्ती वनम्
searching for in the forest
माता दावाग्निम्
mother forest fire
सा प्रवेक्ष्यति
she will enter
When your brother, Uttama will be killed while hunting, oppressed by his thought alone, searching for him in the forest, his mother will enter the forest fire.
इष्ट्वा मां यज्ञहृदयं यज्ञै: पुष्कलदक्षिणै: ।
भुक्त्वा चेहाशिष: सत्या अन्ते मां संस्मरिष्यसि ॥२४॥
इष्ट्वा माम् यज्ञ-हृदयम्
worshipping Me, The Sacrifice hearted
यज्ञै: पुष्कल-दक्षिणै:
by sacrifices of generous fees
भुक्त्वा च-इह-आशिष: सत्या:
enjoying and here, blessings true,
अन्ते माम् संस्मरिष्यसि
in the end, Me will remember well
You will worship with sacrifices, Me, Whose heart is in the sacrifices, by giving generous fees to the conducting priests, and enjoying true blessings, here, on this earth, in the end you will remember Me well.
ततो गन्तासि मत्स्थानं सर्वलोकनमस्कृतम् ।
उपरिष्टादृषिभ्यस्त्वं यतो नावर्तते गत: ॥२५॥
तत: गन्तासि मत्-स्थानम्
then (you) will go to My abode
सर्व-लोक-नमस्कृतम्
by all spheres revered
परिष्टात्-ऋषिभ्य:-
higher than the sages (seven)
त्वम् यत: न-आवर्तते गत:
you from where, will not return gone
Then, you will go to My abode which is higher to the abode of the seven sage, and having gone there you will not return.
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इत्यर्चित: स भगवानतिदिश्यात्मन: पदम् ।
बालस्य पश्यतो धाम स्वमगाद्गरुडध्वज: ॥२६॥
इति-अर्चित: स: भगवान्-
thus glorified, He, The Lord
अतिदिश्य-आत्मन: पदम्
indicating His own abode
बालस्य पश्यत:
as the child (Dhruva) looked on
धाम स्वम्-
abode own
अगात्-गरुडध्वज:
went to, having Gaduda on His banner
The Lord, Who has the emblem of Gaduda on His banner, was thus glorified by Dhruv. He then indicated to him His own abode and went away to His own abode as the child Dhruv looked on.
सोऽपि संकल्पजं विष्णो: पादसेवोपसादितम् ।
प्राप्य संकल्पनिर्वाणं नातिप्रीतोऽभ्यगात्पुरम् ॥२७॥
स:-अपि संकल्पजम्
he (Dhruva) also, born of (his) resolution
विष्णो: पाद-
(and) by Vishnu's feet
सेवा-उपसादितम्
worship attained
प्राप्य संकल्प-निर्वाणम्
obtaining the resolution's fruit
न-अति-प्रीत:-
not very pleased
अभ्यगात्-पुरम्
returned to the city
He, Dhruv also obtained the cherished object which was the result of his firm resolution and was also attained by the worship of Lord Vishnu's feet. He then returned to the city, not very pleased.
विदुर उवाच -

सुदुर्लभं यत्परमं पदं हरेर्मायाविनस्तच्चरणार्चनार्जितम् ।
लब्ध्वाप्यसिद्धार्थमिवैकजन्मना कथं स्वमात्मानममन्यतार्थवित् ॥२८॥
सुदुर्लभम् यत्-परमम् पदम्
difficult to get, that highest state
हरे:-मायाविन:-
of Shree Hari, The Lord of Maaya,
तत्-चरण-अर्चन-अर्जितम्
His feet by worshipping gained
लब्ध्वा-अपि-

असिद्ध-अर्थम्-इव-
unaccomplished desire as if
एक-जन्मना कथम्
in one life time, how
स्वम्-आत्मानम्-
himself
अमन्यत-अर्थवित्
considered, the knower of the values
Dhruv had in one life time come to know of the value of things. He had also achieved that highest state which is difficult to get, and is attained only by the worship of the feet of Shree Hari, The Lord of Maayaa, yet how is it that he considered himself to have not accomplished his desire?
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
मातु: सपत्न्या वाग्बाणैर्हृदि विद्धस्तु तान् स्मरन् ।
नैच्छन्मुक्तिपतेर्मुक्तिं तस्मात्तापमुपेयिवान् ॥२९॥

हृदि विद्ध:-तु तान् स्मरन्
in heart pierced indeed, them remembering
न-इच्छन्-मुक्तिपते:-मुक्तिम्
did not wish, The Lord of Liberation's liberation

therefore remorse underwent
Dhruv remembered his step-mother's shaft like words which had pierced his heart, so he did not seek liberation from The Lord of Liberation and he underwent remorse.
ध्रुव उवाच -
Dhruva said -
समाधिना नैकभवेन यत्पदं विदु: सनन्दादय ऊर्ध्वरेतस: ।
मासैरहं षड्भिरमुष्य पादयोश्छायामुपेत्यापगत: पृथङ्मति: ॥३०॥
समाधिना न-एक-भवेन
by meditation, not in one life time
यत्-पदम् विदु:
that state ultimate is known
सनन्द-आदय: ऊर्ध्वरेतस:
to Sananda and others, the celibates
मासै:-अहम् षड्भि:-
months I in six
अमुष्य पादयो:-
His feet's
छायाम्-उपेत्य-
shelter obtained
अपगत: पृथक्-मति:
and receded (from them), diversity minded
That ultimate state which is known to other celebates, after meditating through many life times, Sananda and the shelter of Those feet which I had obtained in six months, is reverted from me, diverse minded that I am.
अहो बत ममानात्म्यं मन्दभाग्यस्य पश्यत ।
भवच्छिद: पादमूलं गत्वायाचे यदन्तवत् ॥३१॥
अहो बत मम-अनात्म्यम्
O Alas! my folly
मन्द-भाग्यस्य पश्यत
of the dim witted (unfortunate), see
भवच्छिद: पाद-मूलम्
cosmic (cycle) ending, feet soles
गत्वा-अयाचे यत्-अन्तवत्
reaching, asked for that which is perishable
O Alas! Look at the folly of me, the dim-witted unfortunate one, who, having reached the soles of the feet which are capable of cutting the cosmic cycle, asked for that which is perishable.
मतिर्विदूषिता देवै: पतद्भिरसहिष्णुभि: ।
यो नारदवचस्तथ्यं नाग्राहिषमसत्तम: ॥३२॥
मति:-विदूषिता देवै:
mind perverted by the gods
पतद्भि:-असहिष्णुभि:
descending, jealous

that Naarada words truth
न-अग्राहिषम्-असत्तम:
did not adhere to, I the wicked
My mind was perverted by the descending jealous gods, in as much as, I the wicked one did not adhere to the truthful words of Naarada.
दैवीं मायामुपाश्रित्य प्रसुप्त इव भिन्नदृक् ।
तप्ये द्वितीयेऽप्यसति भ्रातृभ्रातृव्यहृद्रुजा ॥३३॥
दैवीम् मायाम्-उपाश्रित्य
Lord's Maayaa sheltering in
प्रसुप्त: इव भिन्न-दृक्
asleep like, diverse visioned
तप्ये द्वितीये-अपि-असति
(I am) tormented, in the other, even untrue
भ्रातृ-भ्रातृव्य-हृद्-रुजा
brother and brother (in) heart perturbed
Taking shelter in Lord's Maayaa, and hence deluded like a sleeping man, my vision is diverse, and so I am tormented by the sense of me and my brother being different, which is not true, because, we are one in essence.
मयैतत्प्रार्थितं व्यर्थं चिकित्सेव गतायुषि ।
प्रसाद्य जगदात्मानं तपसा दुष्प्रसादनम् ।
भवच्छिदमयाचेऽहं भवं भाग्यविवर्जित: ॥३४॥
मया-एतत्-प्रार्थितम्
by me this was asked
व्यर्थम् चिकित्सा-
fruitless (medical) treatment
इव गत-आयुषि
just like (whose) ended is life
प्रसाद्य जगद्-आत्मानम्
having pleased the universal Soul
तपसा दुष्प्रसादनम्
by penance, Who is difficult to please
भवच्छिदम्-
Who can cut the cycle of birth and death
अयाचे-अहम् भवम्
asked I worldly fortune
भाग्य-विवर्जित:
fortune deprived (I)
There is no remedy to this, because I had asked for this, just as medical treatment is fruitless for the one whose life has ended. Having pleased Him by penance, Who is very difficult to please, and Who is capable of cutting the bondage of life and death, I the fortune deprived that I am, asked of Him for material fortune.
स्वाराज्यं यच्छतो मौढ्यान्मानो मे भिक्षितो बत ।
ईश्वरात्क्षीणपुण्येन फलीकारानिवाधन: ॥३५॥
स्वाराज्यम् यच्छत:
self essence empire, willing to give
मौढ्यात्-मान: मे
foolishly pelf by me
भिक्षित: बत ईश्वरात्-
was begged indeed from The Lord
क्षीण-पुण्येन
depleted merits by me
फलीकारान्-इव-अधन:
unhusked grains, like a pauper
Just as a pauper would foolishly ask for unhusked grain from an emperor, so also, I of depleted merit, have foolishly begged for pelf and pride of Him Who was willing to give the joy of the empire of self-essence!
मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
न वै मुकुन्दस्य पदारविन्दयो रजोजुषस्तात भवादृशा जना: ।
वाञ्छन्ति तद्दास्यमृतेऽर्थमात्मनो यदृच्छया लब्धमन:समृद्धय: ॥३६॥
न वै मुकुन्दस्य
not indeed, Lord Krishna's
पद-अरविन्दयो: रज:-जुष:-
feet lotus dust lovers
तात भवादृशा: जना: वाञ्छन्ति
O Son! yourself like people seek
तत्-दास्यम्-ऋते-अर्थम्-आत्मन:
His service's beside, anything for themselves
यदृच्छया लब्ध-मन:-समृद्धय:
by itself receive mind's satiating things
O Son! People like yourself, who are the lovers of the dust of Lord Krishna's lotus feet, do not seek anything for themselves, other than serving Him, for they receive all that which is pleasing to the mind by itself.
आकर्ण्यात्मजमायान्तं सम्परेत्य यथाऽऽगतम् ।
राजा न श्रद्दधे भद्रमभद्रस्य कुतो मम ॥३७॥
आकर्ण्य-आत्मजम्-आयान्तम्

सम्परेत्य यथा-आगतम्
having died, just as coming back
राजा न श्रद्दधे
the King did not believe
भद्रम्-अभद्रस्य

The King Uttaanapaada heard of his son returning to the city. He did not believe it just as one would not believe a dead person coming back to life. He thought how come there is good luck for a wretched person like me.
श्रद्धाय वाक्यं देवर्षेर्हर्षवेगेन धर्षित: ।
वार्ताहर्तुरतिप्रीतो हारं प्रादान्महाधनम् ॥३८॥
श्रद्धाय वाक्यम् देवर्षे:-
having faith on words of celestial sage (Naarada)
हर्ष-वेगेन धर्षित:
by joy's flow overwhelmed

to massage bearer, very endearingly

Then, having faith in the celestial sage Naarada's words, the King was overwhelmed by the flow of joy. He then endearingly gave a very costly pearl necklace to the meassage bearer.
सदश्वं रथमारुह्य कार्तस्वरपरिष्कृतम् ।
ब्राह्मणै: कुलवृद्धैश्च पर्यस्तोऽमात्यबन्धुभि: ॥३९॥
सत्-अश्वम् रथम्-आरुह्य
excellent horses (drawn) chariot boarding
कार्तस्वर-परिष्कृतम्

ब्राह्मणै: कुल-वृद्धै:-च

He boarded a chariot bedecked with gold and drawn by excellent horses, and accompanied by Braahmanas, elders of the family, ministers and kinsfolk….
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादेन ब्रह्मघोषेण वेणुभि: ।
निश्चक्राम पुरात्तूर्णमात्मजाभीक्षणोत्सुक: ॥४०॥
शङ्ख-दुन्दुभि-नादेन
conch, kettle-drums sounded
ब्रह्म-घोषेण वेणुभि:
Vedas chanted, flutes played
निश्चक्राम पुरात्-तूर्णम्-
stepped out of the city, quickly,
आत्मज-अभीक्षण-उत्सुक:
son to see eager
As the conch shells were blown, the kettle-drums were sounded, Vedas were chanted, and flutes played upon, he quickly stepped out of the city eager to see his son.
सुनीति: सुरुचिश्चास्य महिष्यौ रुक्मभूषिते ।
आरुह्य शिबिकां सार्धमुत्तमेनाभिजग्मतु: ॥४१॥

His two queens, Suneeti and Suruchi, adorned with golden ornaments, boarded the chariot, went along with Uttama.
तं दृष्टोपवनाभ्याश आयान्तं तरसा रथात् ।
अवरुह्य नृपस्तूर्णमासाद्य प्रेमविह्वल: ॥४२॥
तम् दृष्ट:-उपवन-

Seeing him approaching near the garden, the king quickly alighted from the chariot and instantly taking him was overcome with love.
परिरेभेऽङ्गजं दोर्भ्यां दीर्घोत्कण्ठमना: श्वसन् ।
विष्वक्सेनाङ्घ्रिसंस्पर्शहताशेषाघबन्धनम् ॥४३॥
परिरेभे-अङ्गजम् दोर्भ्याम्
embraced the son with both (arms)
दीर्घ-उत्कण्ठ-मना: श्वसन्
highly anxious minded breathing
विष्वक्सेन-अङ्घ्रि-संस्पर्श-
Lord Vishnu's feet touch
हत-अशेष-अघ-बन्धनम्
absolved of all sins' bondages
He, with highly anxious mind and breathing heavily, embraced his son with both arms, who was absolved of all sins' bondages by the touch of Lord Vishnu's feet.
अथाजिघ्रन्मुहुर्मूर्ध्नि शीतैर्नयनवारिभि: ।
स्नापयामास तनयं जातोद्दाममनोरथ: ॥४४॥
अथ-अजिघ्रन्-मुहु:-मूर्ध्नि
then smelt, again and again the head
शीतै:-नयन-वारिभि:
with cool eyes' waters (tears)
स्नापयामास तनयम्
bathed the son
जात:-उद्दाम-मनोरथ:
having realized the great ambition
The King having realized his great ambition, again and again smelt his son's head and bathed him in cool tears.
अभिवन्द्य पितु: पादावाशीर्भिश्चाभिमन्त्रित: ।
ननाम मातरौ शीर्ष्णा सत्कृत: सज्जनाग्रणी: ॥४५॥
अभिवन्द्य पितु: पादौ-
bowing at father's feet
आशीर्भि:-च-अभिमन्त्रित:
by blessings and greeted
ननाम मातरौ शीर्ष्णा
bowed to both mothers with head,
सत्कृत: सज्जन-अग्रणी:
honoured of the noble the foremost
Dhruv bowed at his father's feet and was greeted with blessings. He then bowed with low head to his two mothers and he, the foremost of the noble souls, was honoured.
सुरुचिस्तं समुत्थाप्य पादावनतमर्भकम् ।
परिष्वज्याह जीवेति बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥४६॥
सुरुचि:-तम् समुत्थाप्य
Suruchi him lifted
पादौ-अवनतम्-अर्भकम्
in feet bowed child
परिष्वज्य-आह जीव-इति
embracing said, 'May you live long', this
बाष्प-गद्गदया गिरा
with tear choked voice
Suruchi lifted the child who was bowing at her feet, embraced him and said, 'May you live long', thus with tears choked voice.
यस्य प्रसन्नो भगवान् गुणैर्मैत्र्यादिभिर्हरि: ।
तस्मै नमन्ति भूतानि निम्नमाप इव स्वयम् ॥४७॥
यस्य प्रसन्न: भगवान्
whose pleased is The Lord
गुणै:-मैत्री-आदिभि:-
by the virtues of friendliness and others
हरि:
Shree Hari
तस्मै नमन्ति भूतानि
to him bow all beings
निम्नम्-आप इव स्वयम्
flows low water, like itself
With whom The Lord Shree Hari is pleased by his virtues of friendliness and so on, to him all beings bow low, just as water flows by itself on low surface.
उत्तमश्च ध्रुवश्चोभावन्योन्यं प्रेमविह्वलौ ।
अङ्गसङ्गादुत्पुलकावस्रौघं मुहुरूहतु: ॥४८॥

Uttama and Dhruva also
उभौ-अन्योन्यम्

with love overcome

tears flood, again and again shed
Uttama and Dhruv both were overcome with love and by hugging each other experienced horripilation, and shed floods of tears again and again.
सुनीतिरस्य जननी प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियं सुतम् ।
उपगुह्य जहावाधिं तदङ्गस्पर्शनिर्वृता ॥४९॥
सुनीति:-अस्य जननी
Suneeti, his mother
प्राणेभ्य:-अपि
life more than even
प्रियम् सुतम् उपगुह्य
dear son embraced
जहौ-आधिम्
gave up all agony
तद्-अङ्ग-स्पर्श-निर्वृता
by his body's touch relieved
Suneeti, his mother embraced her son more dear than life itself, and gave up all agony, and was relieved by the touch of his body.
पय:स्तनाभ्यां सुस्राव नेत्रजै: सलिलै: शिवै: ।
तदाभिषिच्यमानाभ्यां वीर वीरसुवो मुहु: ॥५०॥

milk from breasts, incessantly flowed

from eyes produced water auspicious

O Valiant One!

the hero's mother, again and again
O Valian Vidura! Milk incessantly flowed from the hero's mother's breasts, which were again and again bathed by the auspicious water produced from the eyes.
तां शशंसुर्जना राज्ञीं दिष्ट्या ते पुत्र आर्तिहा ।
प्रतिलब्धश्चिरं नष्टो रक्षिता मण्डलं भुव: ॥५१॥
ताम् शशंसु:-जना: राज्ञीम्
her congratulated the people the queen
दिष्ट्या ते पुत्र आर्तिहा
fortunately, your son agony healer
प्रतिलब्ध:-चिरम् नष्ट:
is found, long lost
रक्षिता मण्डलम् भुव:
(he will be) the protector of the globe territorial
The people congratulated queen Suneeti and said, 'Fortunately your long lost and agony healer son has been found. He will be the protector of the whole territorial globe.
अभ्यर्चितस्त्वया नूनं भगवान् प्रणतार्तिहा ।
यदनुध्यायिनो धीरा मृत्युं जिग्यु: सुदुर्जयम् ॥५२॥

You have definitely worshipped Him, the Destroyer of the suppliant's agony, by contemplating on Whom the wise have conquered even death which is difficult to win over.
लाल्यमानं जनैरेवं ध्रुवं सभ्रातरं नृप: ।
आरोप्य करिणीं हृष्ट: स्तूयमानोऽविशत्पुरम् ॥५३॥

Thus, as Dhruv was being caressed by the people, the king, Uttaanapaada, seated him on the elephant along with his brother, Uttama, returned to the city as the people sang his praises.
तत्र तत्रोपसंक्लृप्तैर्लसन्मकरतोरणै: ।
सवृन्दै: कदलीस्तम्भै: पूगपोतैश्च तद्विधै: ॥५४॥
तत्र तत्र-उपसंक्लृप्तै:-

Here and there the gates were decorated with alligator shaped plantain stalks bearing fruits, and with areca creepers of the same shape.
चूतपल्लववास:स्रङ्मुक्तादामविलम्बिभि: ।
उपस्कृतं प्रतिद्वारमपां कुम्भै: सदीपकै: ॥५५॥

On every entrance were placed pitchers full of water, which were decorated with clothes made of mango leaves and flower garlands and pearl strings dangling on them with enlightened lights put on them.

सर्वतोऽलंकृतं श्रीमद्विमानशिखरद्युभि: ॥५६॥

The palaces were decorated on all sides with their boundry walls and gates inlaid with gold, which were graced by ariel cars like shining pinnacles.
मृष्टचत्वररथ्याट्टमार्गं चन्दनचर्चितम् ।
लाजाक्षतै: पुष्पफलैस्तण्डुलैर्वलिभिर्युतम् ॥५७॥

The road crossing squares of the city, it's roads, market lanes, were cleaned and sprinkled with sandal water, and they were scattered with puffed wheat, unbroken rice, flowers, fruits, rice and auspicious things.
ध्रुवाय पथि दृष्टाय तत्र तत्र पुरस्त्रिय: ।
सिद्धार्थाक्षतदध्यम्बुदूर्वापुष्पफलानि च ॥५८॥

Durva (a grass) flowers and fruits (showered)
As the women of the city saw Dhruva coming on the pathway, they showered white mustard, unbroken rice, curd, water, Durva grass, flowers and fruits, here and there.
उपजह्रु: प्रयुञ्जाना वत्सल्यादाशिष: सती: ।
शृण्वंस्तद्वल्गुगीतानि प्राविशद्भवनं पितु: ॥५९॥

Dhruva entered the palace of his father as he heard the sweet strains of the utterings of blessings by the city women, who with motherliness gave him good wishes.

Where the ivory made beds were white like the froth of milk, with golden spreads, the seats were very costly and furnitures were of gold.

मणिप्रदीपा आभान्ति ललनारत्नसंयुता: ॥६२॥

There were pleasure gardens with varieties of celestial trees, resonant with the cooings of pairs of birds, and with hummings of intoxiicated bees.

हंसकारण्डवकुलैर्जुष्टाश्चक्राह्वसारसै: ॥६४॥

There were ponds having cat's eye steps, where blue and white lotuses bloomed. There were swarms of swans, ducks, geese, Chakravah and cranes.
उत्तानपादो राजर्षि: प्रभावं तनस्य तम् ।
श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वाद्भुततमं प्रपेदे विस्मयं परम् ॥६५॥

Uttaanapaada the royal sage
प्रभावम् तनस्य तम्
glory of the son that
श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा-अद्भुततमम्
had heard, on seeing most amazing
प्रपेदे विस्मयम् परम्
got to wonder very much
The royal sage Uttaanapaada, had heard of the glory of his son, from Naarada, but on seeing that most amazing glory, he began to wonder very much.
वीक्ष्योढवयसं तं च प्रकृतीनां च सम्मतम् ।
अनुरक्तप्रजं राजा ध्रुवं चक्रे भुव: पतिम् ॥६६॥
वीक्ष्य-ऊढ-वयसम्
observing (his) young age
तम् च

प्रकृतीनाम् च सम्मतम्
of the ministers' agreement
अनुरक्त-प्रजम्
devotion of the public
राजा ध्रुवम् चक्रे
the king Dhruva made

the globe's sovereign
(Later) The king saw Dhruva's young age and with the agreement of the minsters, also observing the devotion of the public, he made him the sovereign of the globe.

वनं विरक्त: प्रातिष्ठद्विमृशन्नात्मनो गतिम् ॥६७॥

The king of the empire, then considering himself to be aging, dispassioned, departed to the woods to contemplate on the essential character of the Self.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे ध्रुवराज्याभिषेकवर्णनं नाम् नवमोऽध्याय: ॥९॥
Thus ends the ninth discourse entitled 'The Coronation of Dhruva' in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
