मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
प्रजापतेर्दुहितरं शिशुमारस्य वै ध्रुव: ।
उपयेमे भ्रमिं नाम तत्सुतौ कल्पवत्सरौ ॥१॥
प्रजापते:-दुहितरम्
Prajaapati's daughter
शिशुमारस्य वै ध्रुव:
of Shishumaara, indeed Dhruva
उपयेमे भ्रमिम् नाम
married Bhrami named
तत्-सुतौ कल्प-वत्सरौ
his two sons Kalpa and Vatsara
Dhruva, indeed, married Prajaapati Shishumaara's daughter named Bhrami. His two sons were Kalpa and Vatsara.
इलायामपि भार्यायां वायो: पुत्र्यां महाबल: ।
पुत्रमुत्कलनामानं योषिद्रत्नमजीजनत् ॥२॥
इलायाम्-अपि भार्यायाम्
from Ilaa also wife
वायो: पुत्र्याम् महाबल:
wind's daughter, the very valiant one
पुत्रम्-उत्कल-नामानम्
son Utkala named
योषित्-रत्नम्-अजीजनत्
of women a jewel (daughter), begot
The valiant Dhruva, from his wife Ilaa, the daughter of wind-god, begot a son named Utkala, and a daughter the jewel among women.
उत्तमस्त्वकृतोद्वाहो मृगयायां बलीयसा ।
हत: पुण्यजनेनाद्रौ तन्मातास्य गतिं गता ॥३॥
उत्तम:-तु-अकृत्-उद्वाह:
Uttama of course, did not marry
मृगयायाम् बलीयसा
while hunting, by the mighty one
हत: पुण्यजनेन-
was killed by Yaksha
आद्रौ तत्-माता-
on the mountain, his mother
तस्य गतिम् गता
his fate got (was dead )
Uttama, ofcourse, who did not marry, was killed by a mighty Yaksha, on the mountain, while hunting. His mother also met his fate, that is, she too died.
ध्रुवो भ्रातृवधं श्रुत्वा कोपामर्षशुचार्पित: ।
जैत्रं स्यन्दनमास्थाय गत: पुण्यजनालयम् ॥४॥
ध्रुव: भ्रातृ-वधम् श्रुत्वा
Dhruva, brother's killing hearing
कोप-अमर्ष-शुचा-अर्पित:
anger, disdain, grief overcome
जैत्रम् स्यन्दनम्-आस्थाय
victory giving chariot mounting,
गत: पुण्यजन-आलयम्
went to the Yakshas' abode (Alakaa puri)
Dhruva was overcome with anger disdain and grief hearing the news of his brother being killed. He mounted his victory giving chariot and went to the abode (Alakaa-puri) of the Yakshas.
गत्वोदीचीं दिशं राजा रुद्रानुचरसेविताम् ।
ददर्श हिमवद्द्रोण्यां पुरीं गुह्यकसंकुलाम् ॥५॥
गत्वा-उदीचीम् दिशम् राजा
going to the northern direction, the king
रुद्र-अनुचर-सेविताम् ददर्श
Rudra's attendents living, saw
हिमवद्-द्रोण्याम् पुरीम्
in the Himalayas valley, the city
गुह्यक-संकुलाम्
by Guhyakas (Yakshas) crowded
As the king went to the northern direction, he saw the city of Alaka where the attendents of Rudra lived and which was crowded by the Guhyakas (Yakshas).
दध्मौ शङ्खं बृहद्बाहु: खं दिशश्चानुनादयन् ।
येनोद्विग्नदृश: क्षत्तरुपदेव्योऽत्रसन्भृशम् ॥६॥
दध्मौ शङ्खम् बृहद्-बाहु:
blew the conch, mighty armed (Dhruva)
खम् दिश:-च-अनुनादयन्
the sky and quarters resounding
येन-उद्विग्न-दृश:
by which bewildered eyed
क्षत्त उपदेव्य:-अत्रसन्-भृशम्
O Vidura! the Yaksha wives were frightened much
O Vidura! Dhruva blew his conch resounding the sky and the quarters. By hearing that sound the wives of the Yakshas were biwildered eyed and were much frightened.
ततो निष्क्रम्य बलिन उपदेवमहभटा: ।
असहन्तस्तन्निनादमभिपेतुरुदायुधा: ॥७॥
तत: निष्क्रम्य
from there (Alakaa-puri) coming out
बलिन: उपदेव-महभटा:
brave Yakshas and warriors
असहन्त:-
not bearing
तत्-निनादम्-
that resounding
अभिपेतु:-उत्-आयुधा:
attacked with weapons
Not bearing the resounding echo, the brave Yaksha warriors, came out of Alka-puri and attacked with weapons.
स तानापततो वीर उग्रधन्वा महारथ: ।
एकैकं युगपत्सर्वानहन् बाणैस्त्रिभिस्त्रिभि: ॥८॥
स: तान्-आपतत:
he (Dhruva) them advancing

O Brave One!
उग्र-धन्वा महा-रथ:
the fierce archer and great charioteer
एक-एकम् युगपत्-
each one together
सर्वान्-अहन्
all of them killed
बाणै:-त्रिभि:-त्रिभि:
by arrows three three
O Brave One! He, Dhruva, the fierce archor and great charioteer, killed each one of them with three three arrows altogather.
ते वै ललाटलग्नैस्तैरिषुभि: सर्व एव हि ।
मत्वा निरस्तमात्मानमाशंसन् कर्म तस्य तत् ॥९॥
ते वै ललाट-लग्नै:-
they, indeed, on forehead planted
तै:-इषुभि: सर्व एव हि
those arrows, all of them
मत्वा निरस्तम्-आत्मानम्-
reckoning defeated themselves
आशंसन् कर्म तस्य तत्
praised the deed his that
With the arrows planted in their foreheads, they reckoned themselves as defeated, and praised that deed of his.
तेऽपि चामुममृष्यन्त: पादस्पर्शनिवोरगा: ।
शरैरविध्यन् युगपद् द्विगुणं प्रचिकीर्षव: ॥१०॥
ते-अपि

च-अमुम्-अमृष्यन्त:
and those not tolerating
पाद-स्पर्शन्-इव-उरगा:
foot trodden by like serpent
शरै:-अविध्यन्
by arrows darting
युगपद् द्विगुणम्
together double (six)
प्रचिकीर्षव:
wanting to hit (him)
Like a serpant does not tolerated being trodden by foot, they also not tolerating, at a time darted double (six) the arrowas towards him, with an intention to hit him.
तत: परिघनिस्त्रिंशै: प्रासशूलपरश्चधै: ।
शक्त्यृष्टिभिर्भुशुण्डीभिश्चित्रवाजै: शरैरपि ॥११॥
तत: परिघ-निस्त्रिंशै:
then by iron clubs, swords
प्रास-शूल-परश्चधै:
lances, pikes, axes,
शक्ति-ऋष्टिभि:-
javelins, double-edged swords,
भुशुण्डीभि:-चित्र-वाजै:
Bhushundees, many feathered
शरै:-अपि
arrows also
Then, the Yakshas, by iron clubs, swords, lances, pikes, axes, javelins, double-edged swords, Bhushundis and arrows with many colored feathers, also,…..
अभ्यवर्षन् प्रकुपिता: सरथं सहसारथिम् ।
इच्छन्तस्तत्प्रतीकर्तुमयुतानि त्रयोदश ॥१२॥
अभ्यवर्षन् प्रकुपिता:
rained enraged
सरथम् सह-सारथिम्
with the chariot and the charioteer
इच्छन्त:-तत्-प्रतीकर्तुम्-
eager to that return (the assault)
अयुतानि त्रयोदश
one hundred and thirty thousand
The Yakshas, in numbers of one hundred and thrity thousand, full of rage and eager to return the assault, rained on him, Dhruva, and his chariot and charioteer.
औत्तानपादि: स तदा शस्त्रवर्षेण भूरिणा ।
न उपादृश्यतच्छन्न आसारेण यथा गिरि: ॥१३॥
औत्तानपादि: स:
Uttaanapaada's son, he
तदा शस्त्र-वर्षेण भूरिणा
then, by the weapons' raining incessant,
न उपादृश्यत-
was not seen
छ्न्न: आसारेण
covered by torrential rain
यथा गिरि:
just as mountain
Just as a mountain covered by torrential rain is not seen, the son of Uttaanapaada, Dhruva was not seen as he was covered by the incessent rain of the weapons.
हाहाकारस्तदैवासीत्सिद्धानां दिवि पश्यताम् ।
हतोऽयं मानव: सूर्यो मग्न: पुण्यजनार्णवे ॥१४॥
हाहाकार:-तदा-आसीत्-
remorse cry then arose
सिद्धानाम् दिवि पश्यताम्
among the Siddhas in heaven, as they looked on
हत:-अयम् मानव: सूर्य:
set is this Manu's Sun
मग्न: पुण्यजन-अर्णवे
drowned in Yakshas ocean
As the Siddhas looked on from the hevens, a remorseful cry arose among them, as they said, ' The Sun of Manu's race has set, and drowned in the ocean of the Yakshas.'
नदत्सु यातुधानेषु जयकाशिष्वथो मृधे ।
उदतिष्ठद्रथस्तस्य नीहारादिव भास्कर: ॥१५॥
नदत्सु यातुधानेषु
as roared the Yakshas
जय-काशिषु-अथ: मृधे
victory proclaiming, then, in the battle,
उदतिष्ठत्-रथ:-तस्य
came out chariot his
नीहारात्-इव भास्कर:
from the mist like the Sun
As the Yakshas roared and proclaimed their victory, in the battle, his, Dhruva's chariot came out, as the Sun comes out of the cloud of mist.
धनुर्विस्फूर्जयन्दिव्यं द्विषतां खेदमुद्वहन् ।
अस्त्रौघं व्यधमद्बाणैर्घनानीकमिवानिल: ॥१६॥
धनु: विस्फूर्जयन्-दिव्यम्
bow twanging the celestial
द्विषताम् खेदम्-उद्वहन्
of the enemies' terror increasing
अस्त्र-औघम् व्यधमत्-बाणै:-
the weapon hosts, dispersed by arrows
घन-अनीकम्-इव-अनिल:
clouds' army like wind
He increased the terror of the enemies by twanging his celestial bow and dispersed the host of their weapons by the arrows just as the army of clouds is dispersed by the wind.
तस्य ते चापनिर्मुक्ता भित्त्वा वर्माणि रक्षसाम् ।
कायानाविविशुस्तिग्मा गिरीनशनयो यथा ॥१७॥
तस्य ते चाप-निर्मुक्ता:
his, those from bow charged
भित्त्वा वर्माणि रक्षसाम्
pierced the armours of the Raakshasas
कायान्-अविविशु:-तिग्मा:
bodies entered sharp arrows
गिरीन्-अशनय: यथा
the mountains thunderbolts like
The sharp arrows discharged from the bow of Dhruva, pierced the armours of the Raakshas and entered their bodies just as thunderbolt enters the mountains.
भल्लै: संछिद्यमानानां शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलै: ।
ऊरुभिर्हेमतालाभैर्दोर्भिर्वलयवल्गुभि: ॥१८॥
भल्लै: संछिद्यमानानाम्
by the arrows cut asunder
शिरोभि:-चारु-कुण्डलै:
the heads (with) beautiful ear-rings
ऊरुभि:-हेम-ताल-आभै:-
and thighs golden Taal (trees) lustrous
दोर्भि:-वलय-वल्गुभि:
by arms bracelets adorned
By the arrows cut asunder adorned with beautiful earings, the heads, the thighs with the lustre like that of golden palm trees, and arms bedecked with bracelets.
हारकेयूरमुकुटैरुष्णीषैश्च महाधनै: ।
आस्तृतास्ता रणभुवो रेजुर्वीरमनोहरा: ॥१९॥
हार-केयूर-मुकुटै:-
necklaces, armlets, diadems
उष्णीषै:-च महाधनै:
and turbans valuable
आस्तृता:-ता: रण-भुव:
strewn that battle field was
रेजु:-वीर-मनोहरा:
shone, to warriors pleasing
That battle field which was strewn with valuabale necklaces, armlets, didems and turbans, shone beautifully giving pleasure to the warriors.
हतावशिष्टा इतरे रणाजिराद् रक्षोगणा: क्षत्रियवर्यसायकै: ।
प्रायो विवृक्णावयवा विदुद्रुवुर्मृगेन्द्रविक्रीडितयूथपा इव ॥२०॥
हत-अवशिष्टा इतरे
the killed besides
रण-अजिराद् रक्षोगणा:
from the battle field, the Raakshasas
क्षत्रियवर्य-सायकै:
by the Kshatriya foremost's (Dhruva) arrows
प्राय: विवृक्ण-अवयवा:
almost cut of limbed
विदुद्रुवु:-मृगेन्द्र-
fled, by the king of beasts (lion)
विक्रीडित-यूथपा इव
sporting elephants like
Those who were not killed in the battle but were rendered limbless by the foremost of the Kshatriyas, Dhruv, fled from the battle field, just as the sporting elephants run away by the presence of the king of the beasts, the lion.
अपश्यमान: स तदाऽऽततायिनं महामृधे कंचन मानवोत्तम: ।
पुरीं दिदृक्षन्नपि नाविशत् द्विषां न मायिनां वेद चिकीर्षितं जन: ॥२१॥
अपश्यमान: स:

तदा-आततायिनम्

in the great battle field, any
मानवोत्तम:
of the Manu's the best (Dhruva)
पुरींम् दिदृक्षन्नपि
the city wanting to see even
न-अविशत् द्विषाम्

not of the enchanters' know
चिकीर्षितम् जन:
intentions man
The best of the Manu's clan, Dhruva saw that there was no one with weapons on the big battle field. Even though he wanted to see the city of the enemies, he refrained from entering it, thinking that no man knew the intentions of the enchanters.
इति ब्रुवंश्चित्ररथ: स्वसारथिं यत्त: परेषां प्रतियोगशङ्कित: ।
शुश्राव शब्दं जलधेरिवेरितं नभस्वतो दिक्षु रजोऽन्वदृश्यत ॥२२॥
इति ब्रुवन्-चित्र-रथ:
thus saying, the wonderful chariot owner
स्व-सारथिम् यत्-त:
to his own charioteer, from them
परेषाम् प्रतियोग-शङ्कित:
the enemies retort apprehending
शुश्राव शब्दम्
heard noise
जलधे:-इव-ईरितम्
of clouds like roaring
नभस्वत: दिक्षु
from the sky in the directions
रज:-अन्वदृश्यत
dust saw
The wonderful chariot owner, Dhruva was saying so to his own charioteer, he apprehended renewed retort from the enemies. Just then he heard loud roaring in the sky as that of the clouds and also saw dust raised in all directions.
क्षणेनाच्छादितं व्योम घनानीकेन सर्वत: ।
विस्फुरत्तडिता दिक्षु त्रासयत्स्तनयित्नुना ॥२३॥
क्षणेन-आच्छादितम् व्योम
in a moment was covered the sky
घन-अनीकेन सर्वत:
by clouds' army, all around
विस्फुरत्-तडिता दिक्षु
flashes of lightening in all directions
त्रासयत्-स्तनयित्नुना
alarming thunder claps
In a moment the sky was overcast by army of clouds and there were flashes of lightening in the directions and all around were thunder claps.
ववृषू रुधिरौघासृक्पूयविण्मूत्रमेदस: ।
निपेतुर्गगनादस्य कबन्धान्यग्रतोऽनघ ॥२४॥
ववृषू: रुधिर-औघ-असृक्-
rained blood torrents, phlegm
पूय-विट्-मूत्र-मेदस:
pus, stool, urine, lard
निपेतु:-गगनात्-अस्य
fell from the sky in his
कबन्धानि-अग्रत:
headless bodies front
अनघ
O Sinless One!
O Sinless One! They rained torrents of blood, phlegm, pus, feoces, urine and lard, and in front of him fell headless bodies.
तत: खेऽदृश्यत गिरिर्निपेतु: सर्वतोदिशम् ।
गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशमुसला: साश्मवर्षिण: ॥२५॥
तत: खे-अदृश्यत
then in sky was seen
गिरि:-निपेतु:
a mountain fell from (which)
सर्वत:-दिशम्
all around the directions
गदा-परिघ-निस्त्रिंश-
maces, clubs, swords
मुसला: स-अश्म-वर्षिण:
and Musalas with stones raining
Then, there was seen a mountain in the sky. All around in all the directions fell maces, clubs, swords and Musalas raining stones.
अहयोऽशनिनि:श्वासा वमन्तोऽग्निं रुषाक्षिभि: ।
अभ्यधावन् गजा मत्ता: सिंहव्याघ्राश्च यूथश: ॥२६॥
अहय:-अशनि-नि:श्वासा
serpents thunder like hissing
वमन्त:-अग्निम्
discharging fire
रुष-अक्षिभि:
rage in eyes
अभ्यधावन् गजा: मत्ता:
ran after (him) elephants mad
सिंह-व्याघ्रा:-च यूथश:
lions and tigers in herds
There came running after him serpents, with rage in eyes, discharging fire and hissing with a roar. Mad elephants, lions and tigers came after him in herds.
समुद्र ऊर्मिभिर्भीम: प्लावयन् सर्वतो भुवम् ।
आससाद महाह्राद: कल्पान्त इव भीषण: ॥२७॥
समुद्र ऊर्मिभि:-भीम:
the ocean with waves terrible
प्लावयन् सर्वत: भुवम्
flooding from all sides the earth
आससाद महा-ह्राद:
approached with threatening roar
कल्प-अन्त इव भीषण:
dissolution like fierce
The ocean approached with terrible waves flooding the earth on all sides with a threatening roar, like the time of dissolution very fierce.
एवंविधान्यनेकानि त्रासनान्यमनस्विनाम् ।
ससृजुस्तिग्मगतय आसुर्या माययासुरा: ॥२८॥
एवम्-विधानि-अनेकानि
such like many
त्रासनानि-अमनस्विनाम्
terrible, for the weak hearted
ससृजु:-तिग्म-गतय:
displayed horrible natured
आसुर्या मायया-आसुरा:
demon like by magic the Raakshasas
The Raakshasa dispalayed many such horrible natured tricks with their magical skills, terrible for the week hearted.
ध्रुवे प्रयुक्तामसुरैस्तां मायामतिदुस्तराम् ।
निशम्य तस्य मुनय: शमाशंसन् समागता: ॥२९॥
ध्रुवे प्रयुक्ताम्-असुरै:-ताम्
on Dhruva applied demonic that
मायाम्-अति-दुस्तराम्
tricks very difficult to counter
निशम्य तस्य मुनय:
hearing of his, the sages
शम-आशंसन् समागता:
welfare praying assembled
Hearing that the Raakshasas had applied demonish tricks which are very difficult to counter, on Dhruva, many sages came there assembled to pray for his welfare.
मुनय: ऊचु: -
The sages said -
औतानपादे भगवांस्तव शार्ङ्गधन्वा देव: क्षिणोत्ववनतार्तिहरो विपक्षान् ।
यन्नामधेयमभिधाय निशम्य चाद्धा लोकोऽञ्जसा तरति दुस्तरमङ्गमृत्युम् ॥३०॥
औतानपादे भगवान्-तव
On Uttaanapaada's son! O Lord! Your
शार्ङ्गधन्वा देव: क्षिणोतु-
the Shaaranga bowed God, may wipe out,
अवनत-आर्तिहर: विपक्षान्
of the suppliant's sorrow stealer, the enemies
यत्-नामधेयम्-अभिधाय
Whose name uttering singing
निशम्य च-अद्धा
and hearing soon
लोक:-अञ्जसा तरति
people easily cross
दुस्तरम्-अङ्ग-मृत्युम्
difficult, O Son! Death
On Uttaanapaada's son! May the Sharanga bowed Lord God wipe out your enemies as He is the sorrow stealer of the suppliant. O Son! By uttering and singing and hearing Whose name people easily soon cross over the difficult death.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे दशमोऽध्याय: ॥१०॥
Thus ends the ninthe discourse entitled 'The Coronation of Dhruva' in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
