मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
अथ तस्य पुनर्विप्रैरपुत्रस्य महीपते: ।

बाहुभ्यां मथ्यमानाभ्यां मिथुनं समपद्यत ॥१॥


अथ तस्य पुन:-विप्रै:-
then his, again by the Braahmanas
अपुत्रस्य महीपते:
issueless king's
बाहुभ्याम् मथ्यमानाभ्याम्
by the arms, being churned
मिथुनम् समपद्यत
couple arose

Then, again, the issueless king's arms were churned by the Braahmanas, from where a couple sprang up.


तद् दृष्ट्वा मिथुनं जातमृषयो ब्रह्मवादिन: ।

ऊचु: परमसन्तुष्टा विदित्वा भगवत्कलाम् ॥२॥


तत् दृष्ट्वा मिथुनम् जातम्-
that seeing, couple born
ऋषय: ब्रह्म-वादिन:
the sages the Vedas knowing
ऊचु: परम-सन्तुष्टा
said, highly satisfied,
विदित्वा भगवत्-कलाम्
knowing The Lord's part (incarnation)

Seeing that a couple was born, the sages who knew the Vedas were highly satisfied and also knew that they were The Lord's part incarnation.


ऋषय: ऊचु: -
The sages said -
एष विष्णोर्भगवत: कला भुवनपालिनी ।

इयं च लक्ष्म्या: सम्भूति: पुरुषस्यानपायिनी ॥३॥


एष: विष्णो:-भगवत:
this of Vishnu Lord’s
कला भुवन-पालिनी
part, the worlds' protector
इयम् च लक्ष्म्या: सम्भूति:
this and of Laxmi come from
पुरुषस्य-अनपायिनी
of The Person's ever undetached

This male, is the part incarnation of The Lord Vishnu, who protects all the worlds. And she is the projection of Laxmi, who is for ever undetached to The Person.


अत्र तु प्रथमो राज्ञां पुमान् प्रथयिता यश: ।

पृथुर्नाम महाराजो भविष्यति पृथुश्रवा: ॥४॥


अत्र तु प्रथम: राज्ञाम्
here indeed, first of the kings
पुमान् प्रथयिता यश:
the male person, glorifying fame
पृथु:-नाम महाराज:
Prithu named the mighty king
भविष्यति पृथु-श्रवा:
will be, spreading great fame

Here, indeed, the male will be the first king glorifying the fame, the mighty king named Prithu, whose great fame will spread all around.


इयं च सुदती देवी गुणभूषणभूषणा ।

अर्चिर्नाम वरारोहा पृथुमेवावरुन्धती ॥५॥


इयम् च सुदती देवी
this and, with beautiful teeth the goddess
गुण-भूषण-भूषणा
with virtues' ornaments bedecked
अर्चि:-नाम वरारोहा
Archi named, the beautiful,
पृथुम्-एव-अवरुन्धती
Prithu only will wed

This, other one, the goddess with beautiful teeth, who is adorned with virtues as her ornaments, her name is Archi, and she the beautiful one will wed Prithu only.


एष साक्षात्-हरेरंशो जातो लोकरिरक्षया ।

इयं च तत्परा हि श्रीरनुजज्ञेऽनपायिनी ॥६॥


एष: साक्षात्-हरे:-अंश:
this evidently, is Shree Hari's part
जात: लोक-रिरक्षया
has come into being, for peoples protection
इयम् च तत्परा हि
this she and ever eager indeed
श्री:-अनुजज्ञे-अनपायिनी
goddess wealth came to be, (His) constant companion

Evidently this is Shree Hari's part alone which has come into being for the protection of the people, and this she, is the ever eager goddess of wealth and prosperity who has come into being as His inseperable companion.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
प्रशंसन्ति स्म तं विप्रा गन्धर्वप्रवरा जगु: ।

मुमुचु: सुमनोधारा: सिद्धा नृत्यन्ति स्व: स्त्रिय: ॥७॥


प्रशंसन्ति स्म तम् विप्रा:
extolled him the Braahmanas
गन्धर्व-प्रवरा: जगु:
the Gandharva chiefs sang
मुमुचु: सुमन:-धारा:
shed flower rains
सिद्धा: नृत्यन्ति
the Siddhaas, and danced
स्व: स्त्रिय:
the celestial damsels

The Braahmanas extolled Prithu, the chief Gandharvas sang, the Siddhas showered rains of flowers, and the celestial damsels danced.


शङ्खतूर्यमृदङ्गाद्या नेदुर्दुन्दुभयो दिवि ।

तत्र सर्व उपाजग्मुर्देवर्षिपितृणां गणा: ॥८॥


शङ्ख-तूर्य-मृदङ्ग्-आद्या:
conch, trumpets, drums and other
नेदु:-दुन्दुभय: दिवि
were sounded tumbrels in the heavens
तत्र सर्वे उपाजग्मु:-
there all came
देव-ऋषि-पितृणाम् गणा:
gods, sages and orders of divine fathers

In the heavens, conches, trumpets, drums, tumbrels and other instruments were sounded, as all the hosts of gods and sages and orders of divine fathers came togather, there.


ब्रह्मा जगद्गुरुर्देवै: सहासृत्य सुरेश्वरै: ।

वैन्यस्य दक्षिणे हस्ते दृष्ट्वा चिह्नं गदाभृत: ॥९॥


ब्रह्मा जगत्-गुरु:-देवै:
Brahmaa, the world's preceptor, gods with
सह-आसृत्य सुरेश्वरै:
supported by Indra
वैन्यस्य दक्षिणे हस्ते
in Vena's son's right hand
दृष्ट्वा चिह्नम् गदा-भृत:
saw mark, of The Mace wielder (Vishnu)

Brahmaa, the preceptor of the worlds, came there along with the head of the gods Indra. In the right hand of Vena's son Prithu, he saw the mark of The mace-wielder, Vishnu.


पादयोररविन्दं च तं वै मेने हरे: कलाम् ।

यस्याप्रतिहतं चक्रमंश: स परमेष्ठिन: ॥१०॥


पादयो:-अरविन्दम् च तम्
in feet (soles) lotus, and him
वै मेने हरे: कलाम्
indeed recognized, Shree Hari's part
यस्य-अप्रतिहतम् चक्रम्-
whose, unbroken disc,
अंश: स: परमेष्ठिन:
part he of The Lord of lords

On the soles of his feet were the marks of lotus and on the palm was the mark of an unbroken disc, which is the sure sign of him being a part of The Lord of lords.


तस्याभिषेक आरब्धो ब्राह्मणैर्ब्रह्मवादिभि: ।

आभिषेचनिकान्यस्मै आजह्रु: सर्वतो जना: ॥११॥


तस्य-अभिषेक: आरब्ध:
his coronation started
ब्राह्मणै:-ब्रह्म-वादिभि:
by the Braahmanas, The Veda's knowers
आभिषेचनिकानि-अस्मै
the coronation materials, his
आजह्रु: सर्वत: जना:
brought, from everywhere people

When his coronation was started by the Veda knowing Braahmanas, the materials for the coronation were brought by people from all over.


सरित्समुद्रा गिरयो नागा गाव: खगा मृगा: ।

द्यौ: क्षिति सर्वभूतानि समाजह्रुरुपायनम् ॥१२॥


सरित्-समुद्रा: गिरय: नागा:
rivers, oceans, mountains, snakes,
गाव: खगा: मृगा:
cows, birds, animals
द्यौ: क्षिति: सर्व-भूतानि
sky, earth, all beings
समाजह्रु:-उपायनम्
came and brought presents

The presiding dieties of rivers, mountains, snakes, cows, birds, animals, sky, earth and all beings came and braught presents.


सोऽभिषिक्तो महाराज: सुवासा: साध्वलङ्कृत: ।

पत्न्यार्चिषालङ्कृतया विरेजेऽग्निरिवापर: ॥१३॥


स:-अभिषिक्त: महाराज:
he, when installed, he king of kings,
सुवासा: साधु-अलङ्कृत:
well dressed, well adorned with ornaments
पत्न्या-अर्चिषा-अलङ्कृतया
with wife Archi, also adorned with ornaments
विरेजे-अग्नि:-इव-अपर:
shone, fire like other

When the king of kings was installed, he was well dressed and adorned with ornaments, and was with his wife, who was also adorned with jewels, he shone like another fire, as if.


तस्मै जहार धनदो हैमं वीर वरासनम् ।

वरुण: सलिलस्रावमातपत्रं शशिप्रभम् ॥१४॥


तस्मै जहार धनद: हैमम्
for him gave Kuber golden
वीर वरासनम्
O Valiant One! excellent throne
वरुण: सलिल-स्रावम्-
Varuna (gave) water flowing
आतपत्रम् शशि-प्रभम्
umbrella, moon like shining

Kubera gave for him an excellent golden throne, and O Valiant Vidura, Varuna gave him an unbrella shining like a moon, on which water was flowing.


वायुश्च वालव्यजने धर्म: कीर्तिमयीं स्रजम् ।

इन्द्र: किरीटमुत्कृष्टं दण्डं संयमनं यम: ॥१५॥


वायु:-च वाल-व्यजने
wind and cow's tail hair fans two
धर्म: कीर्तिमयीम् स्रजम्
Dharma fame spreading garland
इन्द्र: किरीटम्-उत्कृष्टम्
Indra crown of high order
दण्डम् संयमनम् यम:
sceptre to control Yama (the god of control)

The wind god gave two fans made of the hair on cows' tail, Dharma gave a fame spreading garland, Indra gave a crown of high order, and the god of control, Yama gave a sceptre to control with.


ब्रह्मा ब्रह्ममयं वर्म भारती हारमुत्तमम् ।

हरि: सुदर्शनं चक्रं तत्पत्न्यव्याहतां श्रियम् ॥१६॥


ब्रह्मा ब्रह्ममयम् वर्म
Brahmaa (gave) Vedas as armour
भारती हारम्-उत्तमम्
Saraswati necklace of high grade
हरि: सुदर्शनम् चक्रम्
Hari (gave) the Sudarshana Disc
तत्-पत्नी-अव्याहताम् श्रियम्
His wife (Laxmi), unobstructed prosperity

Brahmaa gave him Vedas as armour, Saraswati gave a necklace of high quality, Shree Hari gave the Sudarshana Disc and His wife Laxmi gave unobstructed prosperity and wealth.


दशचन्द्रमसिं रुद्र: शतचन्द्रं तथाम्बिका ।

सोमोऽमृतमयानश्वांस्त्वष्टा रूपाश्रयं रथम् ॥१७॥


दशचन्द्रम्-असिम् रुद्र:
ten moons marked sword Rudra (gave)
शतचन्द्रम् तथा-अम्बिका
hundred moons marked (shield), and Ambika
सोम:-अमृतमयान्-अश्वान्-
Moon, immortal horses
त्वष्टा रूपा-आश्रयम् रथम्
Twashtaa beauty's shelter chariot

Rudra gave a sword with ten marks of moon, and his wife Ambikaa gave a shield with hundred moon marks, Moon gave immortal horses, and Twashta gave a chariot which was beauty itself.


अग्निराजगवं चापं सूर्यो रश्मिमयानिषून् ।

भू: पादुके योगमय्यौ द्यौ: पुष्पावलिमन्वहम् ॥१८॥


अग्नि:-आज-गवम्-चापम्
Fire goat and cow horn bow
सूर्य: रश्मिमयान्-इषून्
Sun rays made arrows
भू: पादुके योग-मय्यौ
earth sandals of Yoga made
द्यौ: पुष्पावलिम्-अन्वहम्
the heavens flowers, everyday

Fire gave him a bow made of goat and cow horns. Sun gave arrows made of his rays. Earth gave sandals made of Yoga, and the heavens gave flowers everyday.


नाट्यं सुगीतं वादित्रमन्तर्धानं च खेचरा: ।

ऋषयश्चाशिष: सत्या: समुद्र: शङ्खमात्मजम् ॥१९॥


नाट्यम् सुगीतम् वादित्रम्-
acting, singing, instrumental (music)
अमन्तर्धानम् च खेचरा:
disappearance, and the sky spirits
ऋषय:-च-आशिष: सत्या:
the sages and blessings, True,
समुद्र: शङ्खम्-आत्मजम्
ocean conch self born

The spirits of the sky gave him the arts of acting, singing, instrumental music and of disappearing. The sages gave blessings which were true, and the ocean gave a conch born of himself.


सिन्धव: पर्वता नद्यो रथवीथीर्महात्मन: ।

सूतोऽथ मागधो वन्दी तं स्तोतुमुपतस्थिरे ॥२०॥


सिन्धव: पर्वता: नद्य:
the seas mountains rivers
रथ-वीथी:-महात्मन:
chariot pathways, to the noble soul
सूत:-अथ मागध: वन्दी
a herald then, bard and panegyrist
तम् स्तोतुम्-उपतस्थिरे
him praises to sing presented themselves

The seas, mountains, rivers, gave pathways for the chariot, to the noble soul, and then, a herald, a bard, and a panegyrist presented themselves to sing his praise.


स्तावकांस्तानभिप्रेत्य पृथुर्वैन्य: प्रतापवान् ।

मेघनिर्ह्रादया वाचा प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥


स्तावकान्-तान्-अभिप्रेत्य
the praise singers them, having sent for,
पृथु:-वैन्य: प्रतापवान्
Prithu, Vena's son, the mighty
मेघ-निर्ह्रादया वाचा
in clouds' thunder like voice
प्रहसन्-इदम्-अब्रवीत्
laughingly this said

When Vena's son, the mighty Prithu came to know that the bards had come to sing his praise, in clouds' thunder like voice, laughingly he said this…


पृथु: उवाच -
Prithu said -
भो: सूत हे मागध सौम्य वन्दिंल्लोकेऽधुनास्पष्टगुणस्य मे स्यात् ।

किमाश्रयो मे स्तव एव योज्यतां मा मय्यभूवन् वितथा गिरो व: ॥२२॥


भो: सूत हे मागध
O Minstrel, O Herald
सौम्य वन्दिन् लोके-अधुना-
noble Bard! in the world, today
अस्पष्ट-गुणस्य मे स्यात्
unclear virtues mine may be
किम्-आश्रय: मे स्तव एव
what depending on my praise this
योज्यताम् मा मयि-अभूवन्
will be addressed, may not in me will be
वितथा गिर: व:
false your words

O Noble, Minstrels, Heralds, Bards, today in this world, my virtues are not clear, they have not been tested. Depending on what you will be addressing, your praises, directed unto me, your words may not prove to be false.


तस्मात्परोक्षेऽस्मदुपश्रुतान्यलं करिष्यथ स्तोत्रमपीच्यवाच: ।

सत्युत्तमश्लोकगुणानुवादे जुगुप्सितं न स्तवयन्ति सभ्या: ॥२३॥


तस्मात्-परोक्षे-अस्मत्-उपश्रुतानि-
therefore in future, our spoken of
अलम् करिष्यथ
enough may do
स्तोत्रम्-अपीच्य-वाच:
praise of masterly words, you
सति-उत्तमश्लोक-
being of the great famed God's
गुण-अनुवादे
virtues in extolling
जुगुप्सितम् न
of lowly do not
स्तवयन्ति सभ्या:
sing praise the respectable

You, who are masters in words of praises, may, therefore in future speak well of me. Respectable people should not praise lowly people like me, when The great famed Lord's virtues are there to be extalled.


महद्गुणानात्मनि कर्तुमीश: क: स्तावकै: स्तावयतेऽसतोऽपि ।

तेऽस्याभविष्यन्निति विप्रलब्धो जनावहासं कुमतिर्न वेद ॥२४॥


महत्-गुणान्-आत्मनि
great virtues in oneself
कर्तुम्-ईश: क: स्तावकै:
to inculcate capable, who by the bards
स्तावयते-असत:-अपि
will be praised, devoid of them even
ते-अस्य-अभविष्यन्-इति
in him this will become, thus
विप्रलब्ध: जन-अवहासम्
is a fallacy, for the peoples' amusement
कुमति:-न वेद
the foolish does not know

One may be capable of inculcating great virtues in oneself, but who will want the bard to praise him on that assumption, when the virtues actually are not there. On the ground that some day they may be there, is a falacy, and being praised in that case, draws ridicule of the people which the fool does not know.


प्रभवो ह्यात्मन: स्तोत्रं जुगुप्सन्त्यपि विश्रुता: ।

ह्रीमन्त: परमोदारा: पौरुषं वा विगर्हितम् ॥२५॥


प्रभव: हि-आत्मन: स्तोत्रम्
declaration of ones praises
जुगुप्सन्ति-अपि विश्रुता:
dislike even the well known
ह्रीमन्त: परम-उदारा:
the modest and very generous
पौरुषम् वा विगर्हितम्
of valour or unbecoming

The well known noble peole do not like their praise to be declared. And the modest and generous people do not like the praises of their unbecoming valour.


वयं त्वविदिता लोके सूताद्यापि वरीमभि: ।

कर्मभि: कथमात्मानं गापयिष्याम बालवत् ॥२६॥


वयम् तु-अविदिता: लोके
we, actually, are unknown in the world
सूत-अद्य-अपि
O Bard! Today also
वरीमभि: कर्मभि:
for brave deeds
कथम्-आत्मानम्
how ourselves
गापयिष्याम: बालवत्
may be sung of, child-like

O Bard! Actualy uptill today we are unknown in the world for our brave deeds. How can we let ourselves be sung of, which is very child-like?


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे पृथुचरिते पञ्चदश: अध्याय: ॥१५॥


Thus ends the fifteenth discourse, forming part of the Narrative of king Prithu, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
