मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इति ब्रुवाणं नृपतिं गायका मुनिचोदिता: ।
तुष्टुवुस्तुष्टमनसस्तद्वागमृतसेवया ॥१॥
इति ब्रुवाणम् नृपतिम्
this being said by the king
गायका: मुनि-चोदिता:
the bards, by the sages prompted
तुष्टुवु:-तुष्टमनस:-
sang praises, satisfaction minded
तत्-वाक्-अमृत-सेवया
his words nectar imbibing
As the king said this, the bards who were highly pleased by having imbibed his words' nectar, sang his praises, prompted by the sages.
नालं वायं ते महिमानुवर्णने यो देववर्योऽवततार मायया ।
वेनाङ्गजातस्य च पौरुषाणि ते वाचस्पतीनामपि बभ्रमुर्धिय: ॥२॥
न-अलम् वयम् ते महिमा-
not capable we, your greatness
अनुवर्णने य: देववर्य:-
to describe, who from Lord the highest
अवततार मायया
ascended by Maayaa
वेन-अङ्ग-जातस्य च
Vena's limbs born of and
पौरुषाणि ते
powerful performances of your
वाचस्पतीनाम्-अपि
the speech masters' even
बभ्रमु:-धिय:
perplex the mind
We are not capable to describe your greatness, as you have ascended from the highest Lord. You have taken birth from the limbs of Vena, so your powerful performances perplex the minds of even the best speech masters.
अथाप्युदारश्रवस: पृथोर्हरे: कलावतारस्य कथामृतादृता: ।
यथोपदेशं मुनिभि: प्रचोदिता: श्लाघ्यानि कर्माणि वयं वितन्महि ॥३॥
अथ-अपि-उदार-श्रवस: पृथो:-
and also, of the highly renowned Prithu
हरे: कला-अवतारस्य
Shree Hari's part incarnation
कथा-अमृत-आदृता:
deeds' accounts nectar like respected
यथा-उपदेशम् मुनिभि:
as propounded by the sages
प्रचोदिता: श्लाघ्यानि
and inspired, glorious
कर्माणि वयम् वितन्महि
deeds, we will spread
And of the highly renowned Prithu, the part incarnation of Shree Hari, the nectar like account of his glorious deeds, we will sing and spread, which are propounded and inspired by the sages.
एष धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो लोकं धर्मेऽनुवर्तयन् ।
गोप्ता च धर्मसेतूनां शास्ता तत्परिपन्थिनाम् ॥४॥
एष: धर्म-भृताम् श्रेष्ठ:
this he, of the righteous holders, is the superior
लोकम् धर्मे-अनुवर्तयन्
the people in righteousness persuading
गोप्ता च धर्म-सेतूनाम्
and protector of the righteousness systems
शास्ता तत्-परिपन्थिनाम्
and punisher of those who this violates
This he, is the superior of the righteousness holders. He persuades the people in righteousness, and punishes those who tend to violate them.
एष वै लोकपालानां बिभर्त्येकस्तनौ तनू: ।
काले काले यथाभागं लोकयोरुभयोर्हितम् ॥५॥
एष: वै लोकपालानाम्
this he, certainly, of the world's guardians
बिभर्ति-एक:-तनौ तनू:
contains in one body, the bodies
काले काले यथाभागम्
time to time as per distribution (of the benefits)
लोकयो:-उभयो:-हितम्
of the worlds' both benefits
Certainly, he is the one who in his own one body contains the bodies of the various gaurdians of the world. From time to time, he distributes the benfits to both the worlds as per their due.
वसु काल उपादत्ते काले चायं विमुञ्चति ।
सम: सर्वेषु भूतेषु प्रतपन् सूर्यवद्विभु: ॥६॥
वसु काले उपादत्ते
revenue in time collects
काले च-अयम् विमुञ्चति
in time and he extends it
सम: सर्वेषु भूतेषु
equal to all beings
प्रतपन् सूर्य-वत्-विभु:
powerful Sun like, glorious
He will collect revenue in time and also spend it in the proper time. He will be equal in his dealings with all beings, and will be powerful and glorious like the Sun.
तितिक्षत्यक्रमं वैन्य उपर्याक्रमतामपि ।
भूतानां करुण: शश्वदार्तानां क्षितिवृत्तिमान् ॥७॥
तितिक्षति-अक्रमम् वैन्य:
will tolerate unsystematic, Vena's son
उपरि-आक्रमताम्-अपि
above all superseding even
भूतानाम् करुण:
of beings, the compassionate
शश्वद्-आर्तानाम्
always of the downtrodden
क्षिति-वृत्तिमान्
earth like character holding
He, Vena's son, the compassionate one, who holds a character like the earth, will always tolerate the unsystematics asserting behaviour of the downtrodden.
देवेऽवर्षत्यसौ देवो नरदेववपुर्हरि: ।
कृच्छ्रप्राणा: प्रजा ह्येष रक्षिष्यत्यञ्जसेन्द्रवत् ॥८॥
देवे-अवर्षति-असौ देव:
when gods do not rain, this lord
नरदेव-वपु:-हरि:
in king's body The Lord
कृच्छ्र-प्राणा:
troubled lives
प्रजा: हि-एष
of the public indeed this
रक्षिष्यति-अञ्जसा-इन्द्र-वत्
will protect, easily, Indra like
In case the gods do not shed rain, he, The Lord, in the body of a king, will indeed easily save the troubled lives of the beings, like Indra.
आप्याययत्यसौ लोकं वदनामृतमूर्तिना ।
सानुरागावलोकेन विशदस्मितचारुणा ॥९॥
आप्याययति-असौ लोकम्
will make them drink, he, the people
वदन-अमृत-मूर्तिना
with face nectar embodied
सानुराग-अवलोकेन
with affectionate glances
विशद-स्मित-चारुणा
with shining smile beautiful
He will make his people drink from the nectar personified face, with affectionate glances and beautiful shining smiles.
अव्यक्तवर्त्मैष निगूढकार्यो गम्भीरवेधा उपगुप्तवित्त: ।
अनन्तमाहात्म्यगुणैकधामा पृथु: प्रचेता इव संवृतात्मा ॥१०॥
अव्यक्त-वर्त्मा-एष:
of undisclosed strategies, he
निगूढ-कार्य:
deep actions taking
गम्भीर-वेधा:
incomprehensible pursuits
उपगुप्त-वित्त:
well concealed wealth
अनन्त-माहात्म्य-
endless glories
गुण-एक-धामा
of virtues one abode
पृथु: प्रचेता:
Prithu like the ocean
इव संवृत-आत्मा
as if contained in self
His strategies are undisclosed, he takes deep actions, his pursuits are incomprehensible, his wealth is well concealed, his glory is endless, he is the one abode of all virtues, and like the ocean he is contained in the self.
दुरासदो दुर्विषह आसन्नोऽपि विदूरवत् ।
नैवाभिभवितुं शक्यो वेनारण्युत्थितोऽनल: ॥११॥
दुरासद: दुर्विषह:
unapproachable, unthinkable,
आसन्न:-अपि विदूर-वत्
close even, far like,
न-एव-अभिभवितुम् शक्य:
not even to defeat is capable (anyone)
वेन-अरणि-उत्थित:-अनल:
Vena's wood arisen fire
He is the fire which has arisen from Vena's body wood. He is unapproachable and unthinkable, even though he is close by he seems to be far, no one is capable to defeat him.
अन्तर्बहिश्च भूतानां पश्यन् कर्माणि चारणै: ।
उदासीन इवाध्यक्षो वायुरात्मेव देहिनाम् ॥१२॥
अन्त:-बहि:-च भूतानाम्
inside and out side of the beings
पश्यन् कर्माणि चारणै:
observing the deeds through the spies
उदासीन इव-अध्यक्ष:
indifferent like observer
वायु: आत्मा-इव देहिनाम्
the life force self like of living bodies
Like the inner self is the observer of the life force of all the living beings, he observes the inner and outer activities of the people through the spies, as he himslf remains indifferent.
नादण्ड्यं दण्डयत्येष सुतमात्मद्विषामपि ।
दन्डयत्यात्मजमपि दण्ड्यं धर्मपथे स्थित: ॥१३॥
न-अदण्ड्यम्
not to the unworthy of punishment
दण्डयति-एष:
will punish he
सुतम्-आत्म-द्विषाम्-अपि
son of self enemies even
दन्डयति-आत्मजम्-
will punish own born son
अपि दण्ड्यम्
also, punishable
धर्म-पथे स्थित:
on righteousness path following
As he follows the path of righteousness, he will not punish the one who is not worthy of punishment be he the son of his own enemy. He will punish his own born son if he is guilty and deserves to be punished.
अस्याप्रतिहितं चक्रं पृथोरामानसाचलात् ।
वर्तते भगवानर्को यावत्तपति गोगणै: ॥१४॥
अस्य-अप्रतिहितम् चक्रम्
his unrestricted rule
पृथो:-आमानस-अचलात्
of Prithu, from Maanasa Mountain
वर्तते भगवान्-अर्क:
will be, Lord Sun
यावत्-तपति गो-गणै:
till shines, with his myriad rays
His, Prithus unrestricted rule will spread all over till the Maanasa Mountains and will remain till the Lord Sun shines with his miriod rays.
रञ्जयिष्यति यल्लोकमयमात्मविचेष्टितै: ।
अथामुमाहु राजानं मनोरञ्जनकै: प्रजा: ॥१५॥
रञ्जयिष्यति यत्-लोकम्-
will please, because the people
अयम्-आत्म-विचेष्टितै:
he by own efforts
अथ-अमुम्-आहु: राजानम्
so him will call 'Raja'
मनोरञ्जनकै: प्रजा:
the entertainer, the people
As he will try to please the people by his own efforts, so he will be called 'Raja', the entertainer, by the people.
दृढव्रत: सत्यसन्धो ब्रह्मण्यो वृद्धसेवक: ।
शरण्य: सर्वभूतानां मानदो दीनवत्सल: ॥१६॥
दृढ-व्रत: सत्य-सन्ध:
firm of vows, truth upholder
ब्रह्मण्य: वृद्ध-सेवक:
inclined to Braahmanas and Vedas, to elderly serviceful
शरण्य: सर्व-भूतानाम्
shelter to every being
मानद: दीन-वत्सल:
honour giver, compassionate to the downtrodden
He is firm of vows, and upholds truth. He respects the Braahmanas and the Vedas, and provides service to the elderly. He gives shelter to everyone and also honours everyone and is compassionate towards the down-trodden.
मातृभक्ति परस्त्रीषु पत्न्यामर्ध इवात्मन: ।
प्रजासु पितृवत्स्निग्ध: किङ्करो ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ॥१७॥
मातृ-भक्ति: पर-स्त्रीषु
mother like devotion to other women
पत्न्याम्-अर्ध: इव-आत्मन:
in own wife half like himself
प्रजासु पितृ-वत्-स्निग्ध:
on the subjects, father like affection
किङ्कर: ब्रह्म-वादिनाम्
servant to the Vedic scholars
He revers other women as a mother, and his own wife, he considers as his half. On the subjects he has affection like a father, and he considers himself as a servant of the Vedic scholars.
देहिनामात्मवत्प्रेष्ठ: सुहृदां नन्दिवर्धन: ।
मुक्तसङ्गप्रसङ्गोऽयं दण्डपाणिरसाधुषु ॥१८॥
देहिनाम-आत्मवत्-प्रेष्ठ:
to the beings self-like dear
सुहृदाम् नन्दि-वर्धन:
for friends and relatives happiness increaser
मुक्त-सङ्ग:-प्रसङ्ग:-अयम्
of the detached, company seeker this
दण्ड-पाणि:-असाधुषु
punishment staff holder, to evil minded
All the beings are dear to him like his own self, he increases the happiness of his people and friends, he seeks company of the detached and holds the punishment staff for the evil minded.
अयं तु साक्षाद्भगवांस्त्र्यधीश: कूटस्थ आत्मा कलयावतीर्ण: ।
यस्मिन्नविद्यारचितं निरर्थकं पश्यन्ति नानात्वमपि प्रतीतम् ॥१९॥
अयम् तु साक्षात्-भगवान्-
this indeed, directly the Supreme Person
त्रि-अधीश: कूटस्थ आत्मा
of three worlds The Lord, self contained in the Soul
कलया-अवतीर्ण:
as part incarnation has descended
यस्मिन्-अविद्या-रचितम्
in whom, by Maaya generated
निरर्थकम् पश्यन्ति
falsely see
नानात्वम्-अपि प्रतीतम्
in multiplicity also, the Reality
This, he is the direct manifestation of the Supreme Person, The Lord of the three worlds, the self contained Soul of all beings, who has descended as part manifestation and in whom the wise see, the false in its multiplicity, generated by Maayaa, the Reality.
अयं भुवो मण्डलमोदयाद्रेर्गोप्तैकवीरो नरदेवनाथ: ।
आस्थाय जैत्रं रथमात्तचाप: पर्यस्यते दक्षिणतो यथार्क: ॥२०॥
अयम् भुव: मण्डलम्-
this he, of the terrestrial sphere
आ उदया-आद्रे:-गोप्ता-
till the Udaya mountains the saviour
एक-वीर: नर-देव-नाथ:
a unique warrior, of the kings' the king
आस्थाय जैत्रम् रथम्-
seated in the triumphant chariot
आत्त-चाप: पर्यस्यते
armed with the bow, will tour
दक्षिणत: यथा-अर्क:
from the south like the Sun
This, he, is the saviour of the terrestrial sphere uptill the Udaya Mountains. He is a unique warrior, and a King of kings. He seated in the triumphant chariot, armed with bow and arrows will tour all around the sphere, from the South like the Sun.
अस्मै नृपाला: किल तत्र तत्र बलिं हरिष्यन्ति सलोकपाला: ।
मंस्यन्त एषां स्त्रिय आदिराजं चक्रायुधं तद्यश उद्धरन्त्य: ॥२१॥
अस्मै नृपाला: किल तत्र तत्र
for him, the kings indeed every where
बलिम् हरिष्यन्ति
offerings will bring, along with the regions guardians
मंस्यन्ते एषाम् स्त्रिय:
will think him to be, the consorts
आदि-राजम् चक्र-आयुधम्
The Primary Ruler, The Disc Wielder, (Vishnu,)
तत्-यश: उद्धरन्त्य:
his fame singing
From every where, the kings along with the regions' gaurdians will bring him offerings, and their consorts will think of him as The Primary Ruler, The Wielder of the discus, Vishnu, and will sing songs in his praise.
अयं महीं गां दुदुहेऽधिराज: प्रजापतिर्वृत्तिकर: प्रजानाम् ।
यो लीलयाद्रीन् स्वशरासकोट्या भिन्दन् समां गामकरोद्यथेन्द्र: ॥२२॥
अयम् महीम् गाम् दुदुहे-
this he, the earth cow, will milk
अधिराज: प्रजापति:
the emperor, a patriarch
वृत्तिकर: प्रजानाम्
livelihood earner of the people
य: लीलया-अद्रीन्
who playfully the mountains
स्व-शर-आस-कोट्या
by his arrows' sharp points
भिन्दन् समाम् गाम्-
breaking level the earth
अकरोत्-यथा-इन्द्र:
did like Indra
This he, the emporer, will milch the earth cow as a patriarch earning livelyhood for his people. He is the one who will palyfully break the mountains by the sharp tips of his own arrows, and make the earth level like Indra.
विस्फूर्जयन्नाजगवं धनु: स्वयं यदाचरत्क्ष्मामविषह्यमाजौ ।
तदा निलिल्युर्दिशि दिश्यसन्तो लाङ्गूलमुद्यम्य यथा मृगेन्द्र: ॥२३॥
विस्फूर्जयन्-आज-गवम् धनु:
twanging, goat cow (made) bow
स्वयम् यदा-आचरत्-
himself when roams
क्ष्माम्-अविषह्यम्-आजौ
the earth intolerable battle-field
तदा निलिल्यु:-दिशि दिशि-
then will hide in quarters, (and) quarter,
असन्त: लाङ्गूलम्-उद्यम्य
the evil minded, tail hoisting up
यथा मृगेन्द्र:
like a lion
When, like a lion hoisting up his tail, he himself roams the intolerable battle-field, twanging his goat and cow made bow, the evil minded will hide themselves every here and there.
एषोऽश्वमेधान् शतमाजहार सरस्वती प्रादुरभावि यत्र ।
अहार्षीद्यस्य हयं पुरन्दर: शतक्रतुश्चरमे वर्तमाने ॥२४॥
एष:-अश्वमेधान् शतम्-
this, he horse-sacrifices
आजहार सरस्वती
hundred will perform, Saraswati river's
प्रादुरभावि यत्र
source where (is)
अहार्षीत्-यस्य हयम् पुरन्दर:
(will) steel whose horse Indra,
शत-क्रतु:-
the hundred sacrifices (performer)
चरमे वर्तमाने
when the last was being performed
This, he, will perform hundred horse-sacrifices, where the source of the river Saraswati is. When the last sacrifice is being performed, Indra the performer of hundred sacrifices, will steel away his horse.
एष स्वसद्मोपवने समेत्य सनत्कुमारं भगवन्तमेकम् ।
आराध्य भक्त्या लभतामलं तज् ज्ञानं यतो ब्रह्म परं विदन्ति ॥२५॥
एष: स्व-सद्म-उपवने
this he, in own castle garden
समेत्य सनत्कुमारम्
meet the Sanat-Kumaaras
भगवन्तम्-एकम्
The Lord, alone
आराध्य भक्त्या लभताम्-
worshipping with devotion, gaining
अलम् तत् ज्ञानम्
entire, that knowledge
यत: ब्रह्म परम् विदन्ति
from which Brahma The ultimate is known
This he, in his own palace garden, will alone meet the Sanat Kumaras, and will worship them with devotion, and will gain the entire knowledge by which The Ultimate Brahma, The Lord is known.
तत्र तत्र गिरस्तास्ता इति विश्रुतविक्रम: ।
श्रोष्यत्यात्माश्रिता गाथा: पृथु: पृथुपराक्रम: ॥२६॥
तत्र तत्र गिर:-ता:-ता: इति
here and there, sayings those many thus
विश्रुत-विक्रम:
of famous valour
श्रोष्यति-आत्म-आश्रिता: गाथा:
will hear, on himself surrounded stories
पृथु: पृथु-पराक्रम:
Prithu, of great power
Prithu, will hear, based on himself, the stories of his famous valour, and many sayings about his great power, spread here and there, every where.
दिशो विजित्याप्रतिरुद्धचक्र: स्वतेजसोत्पाटितलोकशल्य: ।
सुरासुरेन्द्रैरुपगीयमानमहानुभावो भविता पतिर्भुव: ॥२७॥
दिश: विजित्य-अप्रतिरुद्ध-चक्र:
the quarters conquering, by unrestricted power
स्व-तेजसा-
by his own burning spirit
उत्पाटित-लोक-शल्य:
uprooting the peoples enemies
सुर-असुरेन्द्रै:-उपगीयमान-
gods and demons, singing praises
महानुभाव: भविता पति:-भुव:
of mighty glory, will be the master of the earth
By his unrestricted power, he will conquer all the quarters, and by his own burning spirit he will uproot the peoples' enemies, and he will become the master of the earth, and the gods and demons will sing his praises of his mighty glory.
श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे षोडषोऽध्याय: ॥१६॥
Thus ends the sixteenth discourse in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
