मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इत्थं पृथुमभिष्टूय रुषा प्रस्फुरिताधरम् ।

पुनराहावनिर्भीता संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना ॥१॥


इत्थम् पृथुम्-अभिष्टूय
In this manner Prithu glorified
रुषा प्रस्फुरित-अधरम्
in anger quivering lips
पुन:-आह-अवनि:-भीता
again said Earth afraid
संस्तभ्य-आत्मानम्-आत्मना
steadying mentally herself

The Earth glorified Prithu in this manner with her lips quivering in anger. Though afraid she proceeded to say again steadying herself mentally.


संनियच्छाभिभो मन्युं निबोध श्रावितं च मे ।

सर्वत: सारमादत्ते यथा मधुकरो बुध: ॥२॥


संनियच्छ-अभि-भो मन्युम्
give up, O Lord! Anger
निबोध श्रावितम् च मे
do hear said and by me
सर्वत: सारम्-आदत्ते
from everywhere essence takes
यथा मधुकर: बुध:
like the bumble bee the wise

'O Lord! Giving up anger do listen to what I have to say. The wise take the essence from everywhere just like the bee.'


अस्मिंल्लोकेऽथवामुष्मिन्मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभि: ।

दृष्टा योगा: प्रयुक्ताश्चपुंसां श्रेय: प्रसिद्धये ॥३॥


अस्मिन्-लोके-अथवा-अमुष्मिन्-
in this world, or in the other (world)
मुनिभि:-तत्त्व-दर्शिभि:
by the sages the truth realized
दृष्टा: योगा: प्रयुक्ता:-च
are discovered methods and applied
पुंसाम् श्रेय: प्रसिद्धये
for peoples' welfare realisation

In this world and also in the other world, the sages who have realized the Truth, have discovered methods, and applied them, for the realisation of the welfare of the people.


तानातिष्ठति य: सम्यगुपायान् पूर्वदर्शितान् ।

अवर: श्रद्धयोपेत उपेयान् विनन्दतेऽञ्जसा ॥४॥


तान्-आतिष्ठति य: सम्यक्-
those (methods) undertakes, who properly
उपायान् पूर्व-दर्शितान्
the methods before indicated
अवर: श्रद्धया-उपेत
later, with reverence applying
उपेयान् विनन्दते-अञ्जसा
results achieves easily

The methods which are indicated in the former times, if they are properly undertaken and applied with reverence in the later times, bring results easily.


ताननादृत्य योऽविद्वानर्थानारभते स्वयम् ।

तस्य व्यभिचरन्त्यर्था आरब्धाश्च पुन: पुन: ॥५॥


तान्-अनादृत्य य: अविद्वान्-
them disregarding, who the foolish
अर्थान्-आरभते स्वयम्
means starts himself
तस्य व्यभिचरन्ति-अर्था:
his, unsuccessful in results
आरब्धा:-च पुन: पुन:
starting again and again

The one who foolishly disregards these methods and himself follows his own means is unsuccessful in results and starts over and over again.


पुरा सृष्टा ह्योषधयो ब्रह्मणा या विशाम्पते ।

भुज्यमाना मया दृष्टा असद्भिरधृतव्रतै: ॥६॥


पुरा सृष्टा: हि-ओषधय:
of old, created indeed the plants
ब्रह्मणा या: विशाम्पते
by Brahmaa which, O King!
भुज्यमाना: मया दृष्टा
were consumed, by me was seen
असद्भि:-अधृत-व्रतै:
by unrighteous and not adhering to vows

O King! It was seen by me that the plants and herbs which were formerly created by Brahmaa, were consumed by the unrighteous and by those who do not adhere to vows.


अपालितानादृता च भवद्भिर्लोकपालकै: ।

चोरीभूतेऽथ लोकेऽहं यज्ञार्थेऽग्रसमोषधी: ॥७॥


अपालिता-अनादृता च
uncared for and not respected
भवद्भि:-लोक-पालकै:
by you, the world's protectors
चोरी-भूते-अथ लोके-अहम्
thieves becoming the people, I,
यज्ञ-अर्थे-अग्रसम्-ओषधी:
for sacrifice purpose, hid the plants

When by You and the protectors of the worlds, I was not cared for and was also not respected, and when the people had become thieves, I hid the plants in me for the purpose of sacrifices.


नूनं ता वीरुध: क्षीणा मयि कालेन भूयसा ।

तत्र योगेन दृष्टेन भवानादातुमर्हति ॥८॥


नूनम् ता: वीरुध: क्षीणा:
no doubt, those plants assimilated
मयि कालेन भूयसा
in me for time long
तत्र योगेन दृष्टेन
there by methods by knowers
भवान्-आदातुम्-अर्हति
You to bring out are capable

No doubt, those plants have for long been assimilated in me. You, in that case, by the methods shown by the knowers, are capable of bringing them out.


वत्सं कल्पय मे वीर येनाहं वत्सला तव ।

धोक्ष्ये क्षीरमयान् कामाननुरूपं च दोहनम् ॥९॥


वत्सम् कल्पय मे वीर
calf arrange for me, O Mighty One!
येन-अहम् वत्सला तव
by which I compassionately, for you will
धोक्ष्ये क्षीरमयान् कामान्-
mulch, in milk form desires
अनुरूपम् च दोहनम्
in accordance to the milking pot

O Mighty One! Do arrange for a calf for me, in compassion for whom I will milch all milk like desires in the appropriate milking pot, for you.


दोग्धारं च महाबाहो भूतानां भूतभावन ।

अन्नमीप्सितमूर्जस्वद्भगवान् वाञ्छते यदि ॥१०॥


दोग्धारम् च महाबाहो
a person to mulch and, O Mighty armed!
भूतानाम् भूतभावन
of the beings The life Sustainer!
अन्नम्-ईप्सितम्-ऊर्जस्वत्-
food desired, nutritious
भगवान् वाञ्छते यदि
You want if

O Mighty armed One! also arrange for a person to milch me, if You want the desired nutritious food for the living beings, whose lives' Sustainer You are.


समां च कुरु मां राजन्देववृष्टं यथा पय: ।

अपर्तावपि भद्रं ते उपावर्तेत मे विभो ॥११॥


समाम् च कुरु माम् राजन्-
level and make me, O King!
देव-वृष्टम् यथा पय:
by the gods so that water
अप-ऋतौ-अपि भद्रम् ते
in not rainy season also, may well be with you!
उपावर्तेत मे विभो
may stand on me, O All powerful!

O All powerful king! May all be well with You! Make the surface of my land level, so that even when there is no rainy season, the water rained by the gods may stand on me.


इति प्रियं हितं वाक्यं भुव आदाय भूपति: ।

वत्सं कृत्वा मनुं पाणावदुहत्सकलौषधी: ॥१२॥


इति प्रियम् हितम् वाक्यम्
this dear and benefitting sentence
भुव: आदाय भूपति:
of Earth accepting, the King
वत्सम् कृत्वा मनुम् पाणौ-
calf making Manu, in (own) hands
अदुहत्-सकल-औषधी:
mulched all plants and herbs

The King accepting the sweet and benefitting offer of the Earth, made Manu the calf, and miched all the herbs and plants in his own hands.


तथा परे च सर्वत्र सारमाददते बुधा: ।

ततोऽन्ये च यथाकामं दुदुहु: पृथुभाविताम् ॥१३॥


तथा परे च सर्वत्र
likewise others and everywhere
सारम्-आददते बुधा:
essence taking wise people
तत:-अन्ये च यथा-कामम्
therefore others and as per desire
दुदुहु: पृथु-भाविताम्
mulched, Prithu tamed (the Earth)

As the wise take the essence, so everywhere others also likewise milched as per desire the Prithu tamed Earth.


ऋषयो दुदुहुर्देवीमिन्द्रियेष्वथ सत्तम ।

वत्सं बृहस्पतिं कृत्वा पयश्छन्दोमयं शुचि ॥१४॥


ऋषय: दुदुहु देवीम्-
the sages mulched the goddess
इन्द्रियेषु-अथ सत्तम
in the senses afterwards, O Most righteous One!
वत्सं बृहस्पतिम् कृत्वा
calf of Brihaspati made
पय:-छन्दोमयम् शुचि
milk Vedas sacred

O Most righteous Vidura! After that the sages made Brihaspati the calf and milched the goddess Earth, and got the sacred Vedas as milk in the milk vessel of the senses of speech hearing and mind.


कृत्वा वत्सं सुरगणा इन्द्रं सोममदूदुहन् ।

हिरण्मयेन पात्रेण वीर्यमोजो बलं पय: ॥१५॥


कृत्वा वत्सम् सुर-गणा:
making the calf, the gods all
इन्द्रम् सोमम्-अदूदुहन्
Indra, Soma (the drink) mulched
हिरण्मयेन पात्रेण
in golden pot
वीर्यम्-ओज: बलम् पय:
vigour, ardour and strength as milk

All the gods made Indra the calf and milched the Soma drink, as well as vigour ardour and also strength as the milk.


दैतेया दानवा वत्सं प्रह्लादमसुरर्षभम् ।

विधायादूदुहन् क्षीरमय: पात्रे सुरासवम् ॥१६॥


दैतेया: दानवा: वत्सम्
the Daityas and Daanavas, calf
प्रह्लादम्-असुर-ऋषभम्
Prahlaada, of the Demon's the foremost
विधाय-अदूदुहन् क्षीरम्-
appointing, mulched milk
अय: पात्रे सुरा-आसवम्
in iron pot, wines distillates

The Daityas and Daanavas appointed Prahalaad the noblest of them, the calf and milked wines and distillates in an iron pot.


गन्धर्वाप्सरसोऽधुक्षन् पात्रे पद्ममये पय: ।

वत्सं विश्वावसुं कृत्वा गान्धर्वं मधु सौभगम् ॥१७॥


गन्धर्व-अप्सरस:-अधुक्षन्
the Gandharvas and Apsaras mulched
पात्रे पद्ममये पय:
in pot of lotus the milk
वत्सम् विश्वावसुम् कृत्वा
calf Vishwaavasu made
गान्धर्वम् मधु सौभगम्
of song and beauty the sweetness

The Gandharvas, the celestial musicians, and the Apsaras, the heavenly dancers, made Vishvavasu the calf and in the vessel of a lotus milched the sweetness of song and beauty as milk.


वत्सेन पितरोऽर्यम्णा कव्यं क्षीरमधुक्षत ।

आमपात्रे महाभागा: श्रद्धया श्राद्धदेवता: ॥१८॥


वत्सेन पितर: अर्यम्णा
by the calf, the Pitris Aryamaa,
कव्यम् क्षीरम्-अधुक्षत
food milk mulched
आम-पात्रे महाभागा:
in earthen vessel, the revered
श्रद्धया श्राद्ध-देवता:
with reverence, the Shraadha deities

The dieties presiding over the ritual of Shraadha, the Pitris, made Aryamaa the calf, and the revered ones with reverence milched the shraadha food in earthen vessel.


प्रकल्प्य वत्सं कपिलं सिद्धा: सङ्कल्पनामयीम् ।

सिद्धिं नभसि विद्यां च ये च विद्याधरादय: ॥१९॥


प्रकल्प्य वत्सम् कपिलम्
having made calf Kapila
सिद्धा: सङ्कल्पनामयीम् सिद्धिम्
the Siddhaas, the mysterious powers
नभसि विद्याम् च ये
in the skies, the knowledge, and those
च विद्याधर-आदय:
and Vidyaadharas and others

The Siddhas made Kapila the calf and milked the mysterios powers of becoming small and big, in the pot of the sky, and the Vidyaadharas and others milked the knowledge, the art of treading the air, in the same pot and by the same calf.


अन्ये च मायिनो मायामन्तर्धानाद्भुतात्मनाम् ।

मयं प्रकल्प्य वत्सं ते दुदुहुर्धारणामयीम् ॥२०॥


अन्ये च मायिन: मायाम्-
others and super humans (Kimpurushas), the magical
अन्तर्धान-अद्भुत-आत्मनाम्
art of vanishing, peculiar of itself
मयम् प्रकल्प्य वत्सम्
Maya making the calf
ते दुदुहु:-धारणामयीम्
they mulched, (the art) by thought created

The other superhumans, known as Kimpurushas, made Maya the calf and milched the magical art of vanishing peculiar to itself which is possible just by thought.


यक्षरक्षांसि भूतानि पिशाचा: पिशिताशना: ।

भूतेशवत्सा दुदुहु: कपाले क्षतजासवम् ॥२१॥


यक्ष-रक्षांसि भूतानि
Yakshas, Raakshasas, Ghosts,
पिशाचा: पिशित-आशना:
Pishaachaas, flesh eaters,
भूतेश-वत्सा: दुदुहु:
Rudra calf made, mulched
कपाले क्षतज-आसवम्
in skull, blood beer

The flesh eaters, Yakshas, Raakshasa, Ghosts and Pishaachaas made Rudra the calf and drew the milk in the skull in the form of blood beer.


तथाहयो दन्दशूका: सर्पा नागाश्च तक्षकम् ।

विधाय वत्सं दुदुहुर्बिलपात्रे विषं पय: ॥२२॥


तथा-अहय: दन्दशूका:
also without hoods, with hoods
सर्पा: नागा:-च तक्षकम्
serpents', snakes and Takshaka
विधाय वत्सम् दुदुहु:-
appointing the calf, mulched
बिल-पात्रे विषम् पय:
in mouth pot poison milk

Also, the serpants without hoods and serpants with hoods, and the snakes, appointing Takshaka the calf, milched poison as milk in the pot of their mouth.


पशवो यवसं क्षीरं वत्सं कृत्वा च गोवृषम् ।

अरण्यपात्रे चाधुक्षन्मृगेन्द्रेण च दंष्ट्रिण: ॥२३॥


पशव: यवसम् क्षीरम्
the animals grass milk
वत्सम् कृत्वा च गोवृषम्
calf making and Nandeeshvara
अरण्य-पात्रे च-अधुक्षन्-
in forest pot and mulched
मृगेन्द्रेण च दंष्ट्रिण:
by lion the calf and the sharp teeth (beasts)

The animals made Nandeeshwara the calf and in the forest as pot milched grass as the milk and the sharp teeth creatures, made lion the calf ,...


क्रव्यादा: प्राणिन: क्रव्यं दुदुहु: स्वे कलेवरे ।

सुपर्णवत्सा विहगाश्चरं चाचरमेव च ॥२४॥


क्रव्यादा: प्राणिन: क्रव्यम्
flesh eating creatures, flesh
दुदुहु: स्वे कलेवरे
milked in own bodies
सुपर्ण-वत्सा विहगा:-
Gaduda as calf having birds,
चरम् च-अचरम्-एव च
the mobile (insects), and immobile (fruits) only and

The flesh eating creatures milched flesh into the pot of their own bodies. The birds having Garuda as their calf, milched the mobile, insects etc., and immobile fruits etc., as their milk.


वटवत्सा वनस्पतय: पृथग्रसमयं पय: ।

गिरयो हिमवत्वत्सा नानाधातून् स्वसानुषु ॥२५॥


वट-वत्सा वनस्पतय:
having the banyan tree for a calf the trees
पृथक्-रसमयम् पय:
various saps as milk
गिरय: हिमवत्-वत्सा:
the mountains, Himaalaya as calf
नाना-धातून् स्व-सानुषु
different metals, on their own peaks

The trees having the Banyan tree for a calf, got various saps as milk, and the mountains having the Himaalaya as the calf got different metals on their own peaks.


सर्वे स्वमुख्यवत्सेन स्वे स्वे पात्रे पृथक् पय: ।

सर्वकामदुधां पृथ्वीं दुदुहु: पृथुभाविताम् ॥२६॥


सर्वे: स्व-मुख्य-वत्सेन
everyone, by ones main calf
स्वे स्वे पात्रे पृथक् पय:
in own vessel, different milk
सर्व-काम-दुधाम् पृथ्वीम्
all desires providing Earth
दुदुहु: पृथु-भाविताम्
mulched, by Prithu tamed

Everyone, by their main as the calf, in their own vessels, different milk, milched from the all desire providing Earth, who was tamed by Prithu.


एवं पृथ्वादय: पृथ्वीमन्नादा: स्वन्नमात्मन: ।

दोहवत्सादिभेदेन क्षीरभेदं कुरूद्वह ॥२७॥


एवम् पृथु-आदय: पृथ्वीम्-
like this, Prithu and others, the Earth,
अन्न-आदा: स्वन्नम्-आत्मन:
grain eaters, own grain for oneself
दोह-वत्स-आदि-भेदेन
milking pot and the calf different
क्षीर-भेदम् कुरूद्वह
milk different, O Kuru descendent!

O Descendent of the Kurus, Vidura! in this manner, Prithu and other grain eaters milked their own grain for themselves. By the difference of the calf and the milking pot, the milk became different.


ततो महीपति: प्रीत: सर्वकामदुघां पृथु: ।

दुहितृत्वे चकारेमां प्रेम्णा दुहितृवत्सल: ॥२८॥


तत: महीपति: प्रीत:
afterwards, the king pleased
सर्व-काम-दुघाम् पृथु:
all desires yielding, Prithu,
दुहितृत्वे चकार-इमाम्
as a daughter, made her
प्रेम्णा दुहितृ-वत्सल:
lovingly, daughters' fond of

Afterwards, the king who was fond of daughters, was pleased, and lovingly made her a daughter, who yielded all desires.


चूर्णयन् स्वधनुष्कोट्या गिरिकूटानि राजराट् ।

भूमण्डलमिदं वैन्य: प्रायश्चक्रे समं विभु: ॥२९॥


चूर्णयन् स्व-धनु:-कोट्या
crushing by his own bow's ends
गिरि-कूटानि राजराट्
mountain peaks, the king of kings
भूमण्डलम्-इदम् वैन्य:
earth globe this, Vena's son (Prithu)
प्राय:चक्रे समम् विभु:
almost made level, All Mighty

Vena's son, the king of kings, the all mighty Prithu, by the ends of his own bow crushed the peaks of the mountains and almost levelled the globe's earth.


अथास्मिन् भगवान् वैन्य: प्रजानां वृत्तिद: पिता ।

निवासान् कल्पयाञ्चक्रे तत्र तत्र यथार्हत: ॥३०॥


अथ-अस्मिन् भगवान् वैन्य:
then in this (land), the lord Vainya (Prithu)
प्रजानाम् वृत्तिद: पिता:
the peoples' livelihood providing father
निवासान् कल्पयान्-चक्रे
residences plans made
तत्र तत्र यथा-अर्हत:
here and there as required

Then, on this land, the livelihood providing father of the people, lord Vainya, Prithu, made plans for residences, here and there, as requiered.


ग्रामान् पुर: पत्तनानि दुर्गाणि विविधानि च ।

घोषान् व्रजान् सशिविरानाकरान् खेटखर्वटान् ॥३१॥


ग्रामान् पुर: पत्तनानि
villages, cities, towns,
दुर्गाणि विविधानि च
castles various and
घोषान् व्रजान् सशिविरान्-
cowherds' dwellings, cattle pens, with camps
आकरान् खेट-खर्वटान्
mines, small villages, and hilly huts

He made to be built, villages, cities, towns, various castles, and dwellings for cowherds, pens for cattle, cantonements with camps, small villages and huts on the hills and also mines.


प्राक्पृथोरिह नैवैषा पुरग्रामादिकल्पना ।

यथासुखं वसन्ति स्म तत्र तत्राकुतोभया: ॥३२॥


प्राक्-पृथो:-इह न-एव-एषा
before Prithu here, not indeed like this
पुर-ग्राम-आदि कल्पना
city villages etc., idea
यथा-सुखम् वसन्ति स्म
in full comfort lived
तत्र तत्र-अकुत:-भया:
every where, without any fear

Here, before Prithu, indeed there was no idea of different dwellings of villages or cities, now every where the people lived in full comfort wihtout any fear.


इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां सं हितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे पृथुविजये अष्टादशोऽद्याय: ॥१८॥


Thus ends the eighteenth discourse forming part of the story of Prithu's Conquest, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
