मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
अथादीक्षत राजा तु हयमेधशतेन स: ।

ब्रह्मावर्ते मनो: क्षेत्रे यत्र प्राची सरस्वती ॥१॥


अथ-अदीक्षत राजा तु
thereafter consecrated, the king indeed
हयमेध-शतेन स:
with horse sacrifice hundred he
ब्रह्मावर्ते मनो: क्षेत्रे
in Brahmaavarta, Manu's land
यत्र प्राची सरस्वती
where eastward is Saraswati

Thereafter, the king Prithu consecrated himself for performing of hundred horse sacrifices, in the land of Manu, known as Brahmaavarta, and where the river Saraswati flows eastwards.


तदभिप्रेत्य भगवान् कर्मातिशयमात्मन: ।

शतक्रतुर्न ममृषे पृथोर्यज्ञमहोत्सवम् ॥२॥


तत्-अभिप्रेत्य भगवान्
that believing, The Lord
कर्म-अतिशयम्-आत्मन:
performance more than his own
शतक्रतु:-न ममृषे
Indra did not bear
पृथो:-यज्ञ-महोत्सवम्
Prithu's sacrifice, great festivities

The lord of the gods, Indra, believing this act of Prithu to obscure his own performance of the hundred sacrifices, did not bear the great festivities of King Prithu's sacrifice.


यत्र यज्ञपति: साक्षाद्भगवान् हरिरीश्वर: ।

अन्वभूयत सर्वात्मा सर्वलोकगुरु: प्रभु: ॥३॥


यत्र यज्ञपति: साक्षात्-
where, the sacrifice's Lord, directly
भगवान् हरि:-ईश्वर:
The Ruler, Shree Hari, The Almighty
अन्वभूयत सर्व-आत्मा
manifested The Universal Soul,
सर्व-लोक-गुरु: प्रभु:
The All Universal Teacher and All Powerful

It was in that horse sacrifice that the Lord of all sacrifices, Bhagavan Shree Hari, The All Mighty Ruler, The Universal Soul, The Universal Teacher and The All Powerful Lord manifested Himself.


अन्वितो ब्रह्मशर्वाभ्यां लोकपालै: सहानुगै: ।

उपगीयमानो गन्धर्वैर्मुनिभिश्चाप्सरोगणै: ॥४॥


अन्वित: ब्रह्म-शर्वाभ्याम्
accompanied by Brahmaa, and Shiva
लोकपालै: सह-अनुगै:
and the world's protectors, along with their retinue
उपगीयमान: गन्धर्वै:-
being extolled by Gandharvas,
मुनिभि:-च-अप्सर:-गणै:
by sages, and by Apsaras' groups

He was accompanied by Brahmaa, Shiva and the protectors of the worlds, followed by their retinue. He was being extolled by Gandharvas, the sages and by groups of Apsaras.


सिद्धा विद्याधरा दैत्या दानवा गुह्यकादय: ।

सुनन्दनन्दप्रमुखा: पार्षदप्रवरा हरे: ॥५॥


सिद्धा: विद्याधरा: दैत्या:
the Siddhaas, Vidyaadharas, Daityas,
दानवा: गुह्यक-आदय:
Daanavas, Guhyakas and others
सुनन्द-नन्द-प्रमुखा:
Sunanda and Nanda the chief
पार्षद-प्रवरा हरे:
attendents excellent of Shree Hari

Also came the Siddhas, Vidyaadharas, Daityas, Daanavas, Guhyakas and others, even the excellent chief attendents of Hari, Sunanda and Nanda.


कपिलो नारदो दत्तो योगेशा: सनकादय: ।

तमन्वीयुर्भागवता ये च तत्सेवनोत्सुका: ॥६॥


कपिल: नारद: दत्त:
Kapila, Naarada, Datta,
योगेशा: सनक-आदय:
the Yoga masters, Sanaka and others
तम्-अन्वीयु:-भागवता: ये च
Him followed, devotees those and
तत्-सेवन-उत्सुका:
His service eager

The devotees Kapila, Naarada, Duttatreya, The masters of Yoga, namely Sanaka and others, and those who are eager to serve Him.


यत्र धर्मदुधा भूमि: सर्वकामदुधा सति ।

दोग्धि स्माभीप्सितानर्थान् यजमानस्य भारत ॥७॥


यत्र धर्म-दुधा भूमि:
where, righteousness milking Earth
सर्व-काम-दुधा सति
all desire making became
दोग्धि स्म-
yielded forth
अभीप्सितान्-अर्थान्
desired materials
यजमानस्य भारत
for the sacrificer (Prithu), O Bharata Vidura!

O Bharata Vidura! In this sacrifice, where the Earth was milking righteousness, she became the all desires fulfiller. She yielded forth all the desired objects and materials to the sacrificer Prithu.


ऊहु: सर्वरसान्नद्य: क्षीरदध्यन्नगोरसान् ।

तरवो भूरिवर्ष्माण: प्रासूयन्त मधुच्युत: ॥८॥


ऊहु: सर्व-रसान्-नद्य:
bore forth all drinks the rivers
क्षीर-दधि-अन्न-गोरसान्
milk, curd, grains and milk products
तरव: भूरि-वर्ष्माण:
the trees, many fruits
प्रासूयन्त मधु-च्युत:
bore juice full

The rivers bore forth as streams the drinks like milk, curds, grains and milk products and the trees bore many fruits full of juice.


सिन्धवो रत्ननिकरान् गिरयोऽन्नं चतुर्विधम् ।

उपायनमुपाजहु: सर्वे लोका: सपालका: ॥९॥


सिन्धव: रत्न-निकरान्
the oceans gems' treasures
गिरय:-अन्नम् चतु:-विधम्
the mountains grains of four kinds
उपायनम्-उपाजहु:
gifts brought
सर्वे लोका: सपालका:
all the people, along with the protectors

The oceans gave treasures of gems, and the mountains provided four kinds of grains, the protectors of the people and all the people brought gifts .


इति चाधोक्षजेशस्य पृथोस्तु परमोदयम् ।

असूयन् भगवानिन्द्र: प्रतिघातमचीकरत् ॥१०॥


इति च-अधोक्षज-ईशस्य
this, and Vishnu, the Lord
पृथो:-तु परम-उदयम्
of Prithu, indeed utmost prosperity
असूयन् भगवान्-इन्द्र:
being jealous, powerful Indra
प्रतिघातम्-अचीकरत्
obstacles created

Of Prithu, whose Lord is Vishnu, this was indeed the utmost prosperity, being jealous of which, the powerful Indra created obstacles.


चरमेणाश्वमेघेन यजमाने यजुष्पतिम् ।

वैन्ये यज्ञपशुं स्पर्धन्नपोवाह तिरोहित: ।।११॥


चरमेण-अश्वमेधेन
by the last horse sacrifice
यजमाने यजुष्पतिम्
worshipping the Lord of sacrifices
वैन्ये यज्ञ-पशुम् स्पर्धन्-
when Vainya (Prithu) was, sacrifice animal, enviously
अपोवाह तिरोहित:
stole and vanished

When Vainya, Prithu was worshipping the Lord of sacrifices, by the last of the hundred horse sacrifices, the envious Indra stole the sacrifice animal and vanished.


तमत्रिर्भगवानैक्षत्त्वरमाणं विहायसा ।

आमुक्तमिव पाखण्डं योऽधर्मे धर्मविभ्रम: ॥१२॥


तम्-अत्रि:-भगवान्-ऐक्षत्-
him, Atri powerful saw
त्वरमाणम् विहायसा
hurrying through the sky
आमुक्तम्-इव पाखण्डम्
a garbed like, a heretic
य:-अधर्मे धर्म-विभ्रम:
which in unrighteousness, righteousness imposes

The powerful Atri spied him hurrying through the sky garbed as an heretic which imposes righteousness in unrighteousness.


अत्रिणा चोदितो हन्तुं पृथुपुत्रो महारथ: ।

अन्वधावत संक्रुद्धस्तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥१३॥


अत्रिणा चोदित: हन्तुम्
by Atri instigated to kill
पृथु-पुत्र: महारथ:
Prithu's son the great chariot warrior
अन्वधावत संक्रुद्ध:-
chased (him), angered
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ्-इति च-अब्रवीत्
'Halt, halt' thus, and said

Prithu's son, the great chariot warrior, instigated by Atri to kill him, chased him, and in anger called after him, 'Halt, halt'.


तं तादृशाकृतिं वीक्ष्य मेने धर्मं शरीरिणम् ।

जटिलं भस्मनाच्छन्नं तस्मै बाणं न मुञ्चति ॥१४॥


तम् तादृश-आकृतिम् वीक्ष्य
him in that garb, seeing
मेने धर्मम् शरीरिणम्
took him as righteousness personified
जटिलम् भस्मना-आच्छन्नम्
matted haired, by ashes smeared
तस्मै बाणम् न मुञ्चति
for him arrow did not charge

The prince seeing him in that guise, with matted hair and ashes besmeared body, mistook him as piousness personified, so he did not charge the arrow on him.


वधान्निवृत्तं तं भूयो हन्तवेऽत्रिरचोदयत् ।

जहि यज्ञहनं तात महेन्द्रं विबुधाधमम् ॥१५॥


वधात्-निवृत्तम् तम् भूय:
from to kill refraining him again
हन्तवे-अत्रि:-अचोदयत्
to kill Atri urged
जहि यज्ञ-हनम् तात
kill the sacrifice destroyer, O Son
महेन्द्रम् विबुध-अधमम्
Indra, of the gods the lowliest

When the prince refrained from killing him, Atri again urged him to kill, saying 'Kill the sacrifice destroyer, Indra, who is the lowliest of the gods.'


एवं वैन्यसुत: प्रोक्तस्त्वरमाणं विहायसा ।

अन्वद्रवदभिक्रुद्धो रावणं गृध्रराडिव ॥१६॥


एवम् वैन्यसुत: प्रोक्त:-
thus, Vainya's son being told
त्वरमाणम् विहायसा
hurrying in the sky
अन्वद्रवत्-अभिक्रुद्ध:
attacked highly enraged
रावणम् गृध्र-राट्-इव
on Raavana the vultures' king (Jataayu) like

Thus being prodded, Venya, Prithu's son, highly enraged attacked him, who was hurrying through the sky, just as the king of the vultures, Jataayu had attacked Raavana.


सोऽश्वं रूपं च तद् हित्वा तस्मा अन्तर्हित: स्वराट् ।

वीर: स्वपशुमादाय पितुर्यज्ञमुपेयिवान् ॥१७॥


स:-अश्वम् रूपम् च तद् हित्वा
he, the horse and the guise leaving,
तस्मा अन्तर्हित: स्वराट्
from him vanished, the lord (of paradise)
वीर: स्व-पशुम्-आदाय
the hero, own animal taking
पितु:-यज्ञम्-उपेयिवान्
father's sacrifice returned to

He, the lord of the paradise, Indra, vanished from his sight leaving behind the horse and the guise. The hero, Prithu's son took back his own horse and returned to the father's sacrifice premises.


तत्तस्य चाद्भुतं कर्म विचक्ष्य परमर्षय: ।

नामधेयं ददुस्तस्मै विजिताश्च इति प्रभो ॥१८॥


तत्-तस्य च-अद्भुतम् कर्म
that his and wonderful achievement
विचक्ष्य परम-ऋषय:
witnessing, the great sages
नामधेयम् ददु:-तस्मै
name gave for him
विजिताश्व-च इति प्रभो
Vijitashva and so, O Powerful One Vidura!

O Powerful Vidura! Witnessing his wonderful achievement, the great sages gave him the name 'Vijitaashva'.


उपसृज्य तमस्तीव्रं जहाराश्वं पुनर्हरि: ।

चषालयूपतश्छन्नो हिरण्यरशनं विभु: ॥१९॥


उपसृज्य तम:-तीव्रम्
creating darkness dense
जहार-अश्वम् पुन:-हरि:
stole the horse again Indra
चषाल-यूपत:-छन्न:
from the wooden ring and the post breaking
हिरण्य-रशनम् विभु:
gold chain, the powerful

The powerful Indra created dense darkness and again stole the horse, breaking away the golden chain with which it was tied to the wooden ring and the post, and with it.


अत्रि: सन्दर्शयामास त्वरमाणं विहायसा ।

कपालखट्वाङ्गधरं वीरो नैनमबाधत ॥२०॥


अत्रि: सन्दर्शयामास
Atri point out
त्वरमाणम् विहायसा
hurrying in the sky
कपाल-खट्वाङ्ग-धरम्
skull an staff holding
वीर: न-एनम्-अबाधत
the hero, did not him obstruct

Though Atri pointed out to Prithu's son Indra fleeing in haste through the sky, holding a skull and a staff, the hero did not obstruct him.


अत्रिणा चोदितस्तस्मै सन्दधे विशिखं रुषा ।

सोऽश्वं रूपं च तत् हित्वा तस्थावन्तर्हित: स्वराट् ॥२१॥


अत्रिणा चोदित:-तस्मै
by Atri persuaded, for him
सन्दधे विशिखम् रुषा
aimed arrow angrily
स:-अश्वम् रूपम् च
he, the horse the guise and
तत् हित्वा तस्थौ-
that throwing, remained
अन्तर्हित: स्वराट्
invisible the king

Persuaded by Atri, Prithu's son angrily aimed an arrow on him. The king of the gods threw away the horse and the garb and remained invisible.


वीरश्चाश्वमुपादाय पितृयज्ञमथाव्रजत् ।

तदवद्यं हरे रूपं जगृहुर्ज्ञानदुर्बला: ॥२२॥


वीर:-च-अश्वम्-उपादाय
the hero and horse took
पितृ-यज्ञम्-अथ-अव्रजत्
to father's sacrifice, then went
तत्-अवद्यम् हरे: रूपम्
that reproachful, Indra's garb
जगृहु:-ज्ञान-दुर्बला:
took, mind weak (people)

The hero took the horse to the site where his father was performing the sacrifice. Some weak minded people accepted the guise garb of the king of gods, Indra.


यानि रूपाणि जगृहे इन्द्रो हयजिहीर्षया ।

तानि पापस्य खण्डानि लिङ्गं खण्डमिहोच्यते ॥२३॥


यानि रूपाणि जगृहे इन्द्र:
(those) which garbs took on Indra
हय-जिहीर्षया तानि
horse stealing intention, those
पापस्य खण्डानि लिङ्गम्
sins' pieces marked
खण्डम्-इह-उच्यते
Khanda thus here are called

Those garbs which Indra took on with the intention to steal the horse, they were the pieces of sin and they were the signs or marks of sin, called 'Khandas', here.


एवमिन्द्रे हरत्यश्वं वैन्ययज्ञजिघांसया ।

तद्गृहीतविसृष्टेषु पाखण्डेषु मतिर्नृणाम् ॥२४॥


एवम्-इन्द्रे हरति-अश्वम्
like this, Indra's, when stealing the horse
वैन्य-यज्ञ-जिघांसया
Vainya's sacrifice to destroy intending
तत्-गृहीत-विसृष्टेषु
by him taken guise garbs
पाखण्डेषु मति:-नृणाम्
in the 'Paakhandas' is the mind of men

In this manner, the minds of men get interested in the 'Paakhandas', deceitful garbs adorned by Indra, and then discarded by him, when he intended to distruct the sacrifice of Prithu, Vainya.


धर्म इत्युपधर्मेषु नग्नरक्तपटादिषु ।

प्रायेण सज्जते भ्रान्त्या पेशलेषु च वाग्मिषु ॥२५॥


धर्म इति-उपधर्मेषु
religion it is, thus in false creeds
नग्न-रक्त-पटादिषु
in Nagna, (naked) red robed and others
प्रायेण सज्जते भ्रान्त्या
often get interested, mis-conceptually
पेशलेषु च वाग्मिषु
exceptional and eloquent

The men also often get interested mis-conceptually, in false creeds like the Nagnas, nakeds, and red robed saadhus, as religion, they being preached with exceptional eloquence.


तदभिज्ञाय भगवान् पृथु: पृथुपराक्रम: ।

इन्द्राय कुपितो बाणमादत्तोद्यतकार्मुक: ॥२६॥


तत्-अभिज्ञाय भगवान्
that knowing, the powerful
पृथु: पृथु-पराक्रम:
Prithu, of great might
इन्द्राय कुपित: बाणम्-
for Indra enraged, arrow
आदत्त-उद्यत-कार्मुक:
placed on uplifted bow

When the mighty Prithu of extraordinary power, came to know of this, he was greatly enraged and lifted the bow and placed an arrow on it, to strike on Indra.


तमृत्विज: शक्रवधाभिसन्धितं विचक्ष्य दुष्प्रेक्ष्यमसह्यरंहसम् ।

निवारयामासुरहो महामते न युज्यतेऽत्रान्यवध: प्रचोदितात् ॥२७॥


तम्-ऋत्विज: शक्र-वध-
him, the officiating priests, in Indra's killing
अभिसन्धितम् विचक्ष्य
mind set, seeing
दुष्प्रेक्ष्यम्-असह्य-रंहसम्
terrible looking, unbearably angered
निवारयामासु:-अहो महामते
prevented, 'O wise one!'
न युज्यते-अत्र-
is not proper here
अन्य-वध: प्रचोदितात्
other's killing, than the directed

The priests officiating the sacrifice saw the terrible looking, unbearably angered Prithu set his mind in the killing of Indra. They prevented him saying, 'O wise One! It is not proper here to kill another being other than the one directed to be killed.'


वयं मरुत्वन्तमिहार्थनाशनं ह्वयामहे त्वच्छ्रवसा हतत्विषम् ।

अयातयामोपहवैरनन्तरं प्रसह्य राजन् जुहवाम तेऽहितम् ॥२८॥


वयम् मरुत्वन्तम्-इह-
we, Indra, here,
अर्थ-नाशनम् ह्वयामहे
the purpose destroyer, will invoke
त्वत्-श्रवसा हत-त्विषम्
by your fame, eclipsed glory
अयातयाम-उपहवै:-अनन्तरम्
powerful spells later,
प्रसह्य राजन् जुहवाम
forcibly, O King! As oblation
ते-अहितम्
your enemy

O King! By powerful spells we will invoke Indra here, the destroyer of your purpose, whose glory is eclipsed by your fame, and later, forcibly will use your enemy as oblation.


इत्यामन्त्र्य क्रतुपतिं विदुरास्यर्त्विजो रुषा ।

स्रुग्घस्ताञ्जुह्वतोऽभ्येत्य स्वयम्भू: प्रत्यषेधत ॥२९॥


इति-आमन्त्र्य क्रतु-पतिम्
thus consulting, the sacrifice master
विदुर-अस्य-ऋत्विज: रुषा
O Vidura! his priests indignantly
स्रुक्-हस्तान्-जुह्वत:-
ladle in hand, as were pouring oblation,
अभ्येत्य स्वयम्भू: प्रत्यषेधत
came Brahmaa preventing

O Vidura! The priests of the sacrifice master thus consulted him and ladel in hand, were indignantly about to pour the oblations, when Brahmaa came in front and prevented them to do so.


न वध्यो भवतामिन्द्रो यद्यज्ञो भगवत्तनु: ।

यं जिघांसथ यज्ञेन यस्येष्टास्तनव: सुरा: ॥३०॥


न वध्य: भवताम्-इन्द्र:
not to be killed, by you is Indra
यत्-यज्ञ: भगवत्-तनु:
because sacrifice, is The Lord's manifestation
यम् जिघांसथ यज्ञेन
whom wanting to kill, by the sacrifice
यस्य-इष्टा:-तनव: सुरा:
whose the worshipped forms are the gods

Indra is not to be killed by you, because he is the manifestation of sacrificial Lord Himself. Him, whom you seek to kill is the form of the gods which are worshipped by you.


तदिदं पश्यत महद्धर्मव्यतिकरं द्विजा: ।

इन्द्रेणानुष्ठितं राज्ञ: कर्मैतद्विजिघांसता ॥३१॥


तत्-इदम् पश्यत महत्-
therefore, this look at great
धर्म-व्यतिकरम् द्विजा:
Dharma violation, O Braahmanas!
इन्द्रेण-अनुष्ठितम्
by Indra committed
राज्ञ: कर्म-एतत्-
the king's deed this
विजिघांसता
to thwart

O Braahmanas! Do look at the great violation of the Dharma being commited by Indra, in wanting to thwart the deed of the king.


पृथुकीर्ते: पृथोर्भूयात्तर्ह्येकोनशतक्रतु: ।

अलं ते क्रतुभि: स्विष्टैर्यद्भवान्मोक्षधर्मवित् ॥३२॥


पृथु-कीर्ते: पृथो:-भूयात्-
wide renowned, Prithu's may be
तर्हि-एकोनशत-क्रतु:
so then, one less hundred, sacrifice,
अलम् ते क्रतुभि: स्विष्टै:-
stop you sacrifices well conducted
यत्-भवान्-मोक्ष-धर्म-वित्
because you are, in Liberation Dharma well versed

The wide renowned Prithu's sacrifice may be one short of hundred. You may stop doing more sacrifices, as well conducted these are enough and you are well versed in the Dharma of Liberation.


नैवात्मने महेन्द्राय रोषमाहर्तुमर्हसि ।

उभावपि हि भद्रं त उत्तमश्लोकविग्रहौ ॥३३॥


न-एव-आत्मने महेन्द्राय
not also, on self-same Indra
रोषम्-आहर्तुम्-अर्हसि
anger to show worthy of
उभौ-अपि हि भद्रम् ते
both even indeed, blessed be you
उत्तमश्लोक-विग्रहौ
of the Highly renowned Lord's manifestations

You are not worthy of showing anger on the self-same Indra. May you be blessed, both of you indeed are the manifestations of the highly renowned Lord Himself.


मास्मिन्महाराज कृथा: स्म चिन्तां निशामयास्मद्वच आदृतात्मा ।

यद्ध्यायतो दैवहतं नु कर्तुं मनोऽतिरुष्टं विशते तमोऽन्धम् ॥३४॥


मा-अस्मिन्-महाराज
do not in this O mighty Monarch!
कृथा: स्म चिन्ताम्
do not brood
निशामय-अस्मत्-वच:
listen to our words
आदृत-आत्मा
with faithful mind
यत्-ध्यायत: दैव-हतम् नु
which brooding, by Providence spoilt indeed
कर्तुम् मन:-अति-रुष्टम्
to achieve minded very annoyed
विशते तम:-अन्धम्
enters darkness dense

O mighty Monarch! do not brood on this. Listen to us with an attentive mind. The mind of a man, when intent on achieving something, is thwarted by Providence, is very annoyed and enters dense darkness.



क्रतुर्विरमतामेव देवेषु दुरवग्रह: ।

धर्मव्यतिकरो यत्र पाखण्डैरिन्द्रनिर्मितै: ॥३५॥


क्रतु:-विरमताम्-एव
sacrifice stop and
देवेषु दुरवग्रह:
the gods are obstinate
धर्म-व्यतिकर:
the religion is violated
यत्र पाखण्डै:-
where by pseudo religious practices
इन्द्र-निर्मितै:
by Indra instigated

May this sacrifice be stopped, because the gods are obstinate by nature, and because of it the religion is violated as the pseudo religion instigated by Indra, is being practiced.


एभिरिन्द्रोपसंसृष्टै: पाखण्डैर्हारिभिर्जनम् ।

ह्रियमाणं विचक्ष्वैनं यस्ते यज्ञध्रुगश्वमुट् ॥३६॥


एभि:-इन्द्र-उपसंसृष्टै:
by these, by Indra created
पाखण्डै:-हारिभि:-जनम्
by false religion, enchanting to people
ह्रियमाणम् विचक्ष्व-एनम्
carried away, look at them
य:-ते यज्ञ-ध्रुक्-अश्व-मुट्
who your sacrifice horse stole

Look at these people who are enchanted and so carried away by the false religion which was created by Indra, who had stolen your sacrifice horse.


भवान् परित्रातुमिहावतीर्णो धर्मं जनानां समयानुरूपम् ।

वेनापचारादवलुप्तमद्य तद्देहतो विष्णुकलासि वैन्य ॥३७॥


भवान् परित्रातुम्-इह-अवतीर्ण:
you, to rescue, here have incarnated
धर्मम् जनानाम् समय-अनुरूपम्
the religion of the people, in time proper
वेन-अपचारात्-अवलुप्तम्-अद्य
by Vena's misdeeds, vanished, today
तत्-देहत: विष्णु-कला-
from his body, Vishnu's part
असि वैन्य
(you) are O Vainya!

O Vainya, Prithu! You are the part incarnation of Vishnu. To rescue the religious practices of the people which had vanished because of the misdeeds of Vena, you have manifested here from his body, in proper time.


स त्वं विमृश्यास्य भवं प्रजापते सङ्कल्पनं विश्वसृजां पिपीपृहि ।

ऐन्द्रीं च मायामुपधर्ममातरं प्रचण्डपाखण्डपथं प्रभो जहि ॥३८॥


स: त्वम् विमृश्य-
that you, reflecting on
अस्य भवम् प्रजापते
this incarnation, O Peoples' King!
सङ्कल्पनम् विश्वसृजाम्
the intrinsic desire of the world's creators
पिपीपृहि ऐन्द्रीम् च
fulfil, Indra's and
मायाम्-उपधर्म-मातरम्
Maayaa, the pseudo-religions' mother
प्रचण्ड-पाखण्ड-पथम्
severe false practice path
प्रभो जहि
O Lord! Foil

That You! O Lord! Do reflect on the purpose of this incarnation and foil the path of the severe false paractices conjured by Indra's Maayaa, the mother of psueodo -religion, and fulfill the intrinsic desire of the creators of the world.


मैत्रेय उवाच -
Maitreya said -
इत्थं स लोकगुरुणा समादिष्टो विशाम्पति: ।

तथा च कृत्वा वात्सल्यं मघोनापि च सन्दधे ॥३९॥


इत्थम् स: लोक-गुरुणा
like this he, by the world's preceptor
समादिष्ट: विशाम्पति:
instructed, the peoples' ruler (Prithu)
तथा च कृत्वा वात्सल्यम्
like that did affection
मघोना-अपि च सन्दधे
for Indra also, and came to terms

The peoples' ruler Prithu did just like he was instructed by the world's preceptor, Brahmaa, and came to terms with Indra and also gave him affection.


कृतावभृथस्नानाय पृथवे भूरिकर्मणे ।

वरान्ददुस्ते वरदा ये तद्बर्हिषि तर्पिता: ॥४०॥


कृत-अवभृथ-स्नानाय
(to him who) had taken after sacrifice bath
पृथवे भूरि-कर्मणे
Prithu, the many virtuous deeds performer
वरान्-ददु:-ते वरदा: ये
boons gave, they the Bestower of boons who
तत्-बर्हिषि तर्पिता:
in that sacrifice were invoked

After, the performer of many sacred deeds, Prithu had taken the ritualistic bath at the end of the sacrifice, the gods, the bestower of boons who were invoked for that sacrifice, gave him boons.


विप्रा: सत्याशिषस्तुष्टा: श्रद्धया लब्धदक्षिणा: ।

आशिषो युयुजु: क्षत्तरादिराजाय सत्कृता: ॥४१॥


विप्रा: सत्य-आशिष:-तुष्टा:
the Braahmanas (whose)true blessings, were satisfied
श्रद्धया लब्ध-दक्षिणा:
with reverence, having received fees
आशिष: युयुजु: क्षत्त:-
blessings gave, O Vidura!
आदि-राजाय सत्कृता:
to the primary king, gratified

O Vidura! The Braahmanas whose blessings were true, were satisfied by the reverence and the fees they received, and gratified they pronounced blessings on the primary king Prithu.


त्वयाऽऽहूता महाबहो सर्व एव समागता: ।

पूजिता दानमानाभ्यां पितृदेवर्षिमानवा: ॥४२॥


त्वया-आहूता: महाबहो
by you invited, O Mighty armed One!
सर्वे एव समागता:
all also assembled
पूजिता: दान-मानाभ्याम्
were worshipped by gifts and honour
पितृ-देव-ऋषि-मानवा:
manes, gods, sages and human beings

O Mighty armed One! All those who were invited by you had also assembled here and the manes, gods, sages and human beings were worshipped by you with gifts and honour.


श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां चतुर्थस्कन्धे पृथुविजये एकोनविंश: अध्याय: ॥१९॥


Thus ends the nineteenth discourse forming part of the story of Prithu's Conquest, in Book Four of the great and glorious Bhaagavata-Puraana.
